DOUBLE STRIKE! MAJOR STORES ACCUSED ON UNFAIR LABOUR PRACTICES!

The Cappunino’s staff in Heidelberg mall embarked on a strike on Wednesday, February 7 hoping to get a solution for the unjustified working conditions they have got fed up with.

About 20 employees was involved in this strike, joined by their shop steward and SAFTU (SA Federation of Trade Unions) representative.

The cafe staff claim that they have not been paid for the past 5 months, instead their remuneration was only in the form of the tips they made daily.

Another claim is that the manager loans them their salaries when they face emergencies or need transport and lunch money.

The manager said he is ready to go into talks to end the strike, but the staff want written confirmation as the person has proved to be untrustworthy.

Shoprite Heidelberg staff went on a strike on Monday morning (February 5), asking for their working hours to be extend from 32 to 40 hours per week.

The small group, mostly casual staff, want the local Shoprite management to agree on permanent employment instead of the temporary contract.

Some of the protesting workers said that management should take care of all staff and be treated fairly.

The casual staff is reported to having their sick notes are rejected, and they give the affected employees short leave rather than a full leave.

The protest was a short and no violence was reported.

SONA

postponed!

Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete has announced that the State of the Nation Address (SONA) has been postponed.

SONA, which was scheduled for Thursday (February 8), will no longer take place as scheduled.

Mbete said on Tuesday, February 6 at a briefing outside Parliament that a new date will be announced soon.

Presiding Officers had approached President Jacob Zuma to postpone the speech to allow room for the creation of a more conducive environment in Parliament.

“We met the President today and he was already writing to us asking to postpone.

We want a conducive political environment…

We have been dismayed at anarchy of the past four years. Developments this year have caused us great concern…” Mbete said.

In taking their decision, Mbete said Parliament had “looked realistically at developments that had taken place in the past week”.

Last week, Mbete led a briefing of the Presiding Officers, where she announced that plans to hold SONA were set to go ahead.

The beginning of the year has seen an effort to increase public participation through various modalities by Ekurhuleni Legislature.

More recently, Oversight Committees embarked on “Taking Committees to Communities”.

This programme sought to start a forum of engagement between communities and oversight committees to enable a better understanding of what happens in oversight committee meetings.

The programme aims to educate and create awareness about the work of Council Oversight Committees to the identified stakeholders, provide information on the performance of the municipality which would in turn enrich stakeholders’ ability to provide feedback. Also, the meetings allow residents to freely interact with members of the oversight committees and build relations for possible future interactions on service delivery.

The public meetings took place from Thursday, the 1st and Tuesday, the 6th of February, with MPAC’s (Municipal Public Accounts Committee) Public Hearing set to sit on Friday morning,

The second phase of such programmes will be rolled out in June 2018, where mass public meetings will be held to advance the same efforts on a larger scale.

Mapepeza attended and observed the Community Safety public meeting held at the Nigel Council Chambers on Tuesday, February 6. The proceedings were led by Cllr Vivienne Chauke, Ekurhuleni MMC for Community Safety and Cllr Izak Berg (S79 Oversight committee member for Community Safety).

The councillors took tuns in interacting with residents on their concerns of safety in their homes and properties.

They also explained in detail the work of the oversight committees in holding the executive council accountable in government’s commitments to the people.

ISHASHALAZI AUDITIONS ATTRACT EKURHULENI TALENT! Artist line-up for spot in Gauteng annual Festival!

After the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation made a call to emerging artists involved in poetry, and theatre to audition for being part of the 60 contestants, who will compete on the Ishashalazi Provincial Festival, artists from Kwa-TsaDuza (Kwa-Thema, Tsakane and Duduza) responded.

They came in numbers to fill up the Monty Motloung Hall to showcase their art work and performances on Saturday, February 3.

The judges and audience of community members were spoiled with raw talent by over 30 performances throughout the whole day.

“Our aim is to create a platform to develop and expose talent.

We have prizes for dance, theatre, and poetry - this is just to show artists that the department recognizes and appreciate their positive contibution in our society.

We’ll also fund the best dance group from the festival to rep-

resent Gauteng in Italy at the International Dance Festival later this year,” says Andrew Makhaya, Deputy Director of Theatre and Dance from Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

Makhaya added that Ishashalazi Provincial Theatre Festival will run from February 20 until 27 February this year in Daveyton.

Prizes such as R10 000 for poetry, and R 15 000 for drama and dance respectively would be awarded to the best productions.

“We’ll also fund the best theatre production to represent Gauteng at the National Art Festival in Grahamstown on June this year.

It is our mandate to see art develops fully in Gauteng, and that young artists have a stage for their talents to blossom,” said Makhaya.

“I’m waiting eagerly for the call to notify me if I made it.

The competition was tide considering that auditions took part throughout five regions in Gauteng, Duduza being the last to host them as they started from Thembisa last year,” said Thabiso Ntanda, a poet from Duduza (pictured).

“I believe I did my best. Even if I don’t make it to the final 60.

I’m proud of my performance,” said Ntanda.

60 DISADVANTAGED TSAKANE LEARNERS RECEIVE NEW SCHOOL UNIFORMS A learner dressed in full school uniform is even more motivated to stay in school.

Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Environment and Waste Management Services, Cllr Ndosi Shongwe, today brought a smile to scores of disadvantaged learners when she handed out new school uniform hampers as part of the “MMC BACK TO SCHOOL PROGRAMME”.

Sixty learners from Tsakane Primary School received hampers donated by the office of the MMC in partnership with the Department of Environment and Waste Management Services’ service providers.

The hampers included a pair of school shoes, white shirt, grey pants, tunics, school bag and jersey.

One of the recipients, a Grade 4 learner, could not contain her excitement when she received her uniform hamper from the MMC, “Thank you so much Ma’, the uniform looks good on me,” she said.

MMC Shongwe further encouraged the learners to study hard and take care of the environment within the school premises.

“Every child has a right to education, to be cared for and to be kept at a safe environment and to be treated fairly,” concluded Ndosi.

The repatriated spirits are then laid at Isivivane as their final spiritual resting place.

This process of spiritual repatriation is only done if the family members are also involved as they play a critical role in the repatriation of their family members’ spirits.

The families are also expected to guide the Freedom Park interfaith about their family believe systems so that relevant faith within the interfaith committee could be used to repatriate the spirit(s).

The Gauteng stream of the SAFA ABC Motsepe League continued this past weekend with some scintillating action across the province.
