Minister wishes speedy recovery to victims of Geldenhuis train collision!

The Minister of Transport, Mr Joe Maswanganyi, directed the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) to expedite the investigation into the cause of the two Metrorail trains that collided this morning at Geldenhuis Station East of Johannesburg.

Both these trains were authorised to travel on the same line toward Springs from Johannesburg. Investigators on the scene, classified this crash as a rear-endvision on the platform and a comprehensive investigation is underway.

It is estimated that about two hundred and twenty six (226) passengers have been injured with sixty seven (67) sustaining moderate injuries and hundred and fifty nine (159) sustaining minor injuries.

Most of these injuries are as a result of emergency brakes being applied by the driver of the incoming train.

Minister Maswanganyi has directed PRASA to fast track its plans to modernise rail services in South Africa including expediting the process to replace all existing signaling interlocking, which consist mainly of obsolete mechanical and electro-mechanical systems, with electronic interlocking as the technology of choice.

“A budget of about R5.6 billion has been set aside for the signalling modernisation since 2015 to 2018, as we know that our rail network has previously been characterised by years of disinvestment by the apartheid regime. Cable theft remains one of the major challenges that keep on undermining our determination and efforts to provide a safe and secure railway experience for all South Africans,” said Minister Maswanganyi.

Minister Maswanganyi calls on communities, civil society and business to work together with government to secure the railway network from all the criminals who are hell-bent on vandalising the railway network system for economic benefits.

Heidelberg Mall goes on final shoe collection drive!

The Heidelberg Mall has over the years established itself within the local community as a collection zone for the “Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes” drive, where customers donated pairs of shoes at a special shoe collection box located in the Mall.

“Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes” is a community initiative launched in early 2016 as a meaningful drive to collect shoes for those in need. This was the brain child of the Mall owners who prior to the Mall launch did a re-

search to find out what the main needs of the local community were.

Their answer was clear: “shoes will help the disadvantaged people in our community go a long way”. To date thousands of pairs have been collected and handed over to various local non-profit community organisations as well as to walk-in customers in need.

The last shoe collection drive took place in December 2017, where hundreds of pairs were donated to Indawo Yosizo (meaning

Centre for Help in isiZulu), a Heidelberg non-profit community organisation whose main focus is to provide community based social work services to the community.

Professor William Keorapetse Kgositsile or Bra Willie (79), as he was affectionately known, passed away on Wednesday, 3 January 2018 at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.

Committee spokesperson Mandla Langa announced that every day between 18:00 and 19:00 (10-16 January), they will to hold sessions to celebrate the life of Kgositsile at the family home in Killarney.

The renowned veteran activist and a giant of the liberation struggle was inaugurated as South Africa's second National Poet Laureate in 2006. He was also a recipient of the National Order of Ikhamanga for his contribution to the field of literature.

Condolence books will be available at the family homes both in Killarney and Diepkloof.

Langa said further arrangements will be made for the message book to be available at the Market Theatre in Newtown and at the City Hall during the memorial services on the 11th and 12th of January respectively.

President Jacob Zuma has declared a Special Official Funeral for him, which is for distinguished persons specifically designated by the President of the Republic.

Speaking to the media on Monday about the funeral arrangements, the special funeral committee assured that the national icon will be accorded a fitting send-off that will be accommodative of his dynamic personality.

The committee comprises family representatives, the ANC in Gauteng, government representatives from the Departments of Arts and Culture, Office of the Premier in Gauteng, and artists who worked closely with Kgositsile.

“We are aware of the various events that are organised to celebrate the life of this stalwart in other parts of the country and the world over. We encourage all those concerned to continue celebrating the life of this icon in a dignified manner befitting an icon of his stature,” said Langa.

His death has sent shockwaves into the arts fraternity, with activists and organisations, civil society and academia locally and across the globe sending condolences and celebrating his life.

Funeral Arrangements Kgositsile’s funeral will be held on 16 January. The funeral will start at home in Diepkloof at 7am.

The funeral service will be held at Marks Park from 9am and will then proceed to West Park Cemetery for the burial.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the eulogy at the funeral.

President Zuma has ordered that the National Flag be flown at half-mast at every flag station in the country on the day of the funeral.

Those who knew Kgositsile personally have described him as a soft-spoken person, who always had a smile on his face.

He exuded gentleness and touched the lives of many through his poetry and political activism.

An ANC member, Kgositsile went into exile in 1961 and settled in Tanzania for a year before moving to the United States where he studied worked and published poetry for over a decade.

The EFF-lesedi sub-region would like to thank the community of Ratanda especially ward 1,2,3 and 4 for coming out in numbers and attending yesterday's meeting regarding VOPAK. Time to sit at home is over, people are now taking charge of what is theirs and that is what we saw yesterday.

We encourage the community to continue attending VOPAK meetings and Lerato Maloka to allow VOPAK space to operate.

This is on the premise that VOPAK is a private owned entity and not a municipal owned entity (MOE).

The EFF has always been calling for lesedi local municipality to establish it's own MOE to create jobs and hire our people on permanent basis and has since been failing dismally.

We appreciate and endorse the initiative by this private entity to choose lesedi as their home. We thank them for such an investment in this critical stage of our economy.

Lesedi is a place of light, may that light shine in the pockets of VOPAK as well as our people.

People want to change undesired trait but do not want to change their behaviour. Making wrong resolutions or making too many resolutions and not follow even a single one.

Believing that you will get a better job and you do not formulate a CV and do not apply for employment.

How do I achieve my Resolutions or Annual Plans this year?

Review the resolutions you made a year ago – do not over crowd yourself with new plans when you don’t know what happened with the last year’s resolution.

Follow your resolution - It is important to note that New Year’s resolutions should be followed throughout the year without a failure so that you can evaluate yourself come end of the year.

Stop procrastination – the more you postpone you definitely delaying yourself Review the previous year mistakes and lessons learned in the process Be realistic with your resolution – do not overcook them Check your network – there are people that must be removed from our network as they might be a reason for our resolution failure Put yourself in charge – do not rely on people to fulfil your resolutions / dreams. Your resolution is not their priority remember they have plans of their own.

255 kids rescued from illegal initiation schools in gauteng and free state!

Since October, police have been running operations in the Free State to find missing children taken there after being kidnapped in Vaal Triangle (Sedibeng) and Orange Farm South of Johannesburg.

Finally, their efforts have paid off when they found 255 young initiates in the bushes last December.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Johannes Motsiri said many of the culprits ran illegal schools and said investigations were ongoing. Police found another of the schools on a koppie near Poortjie, Orange Farm.

This was despite the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL)’s ban on all initiation schools in the province until 2019 December.

During the festive season police received a tip-off from residents about the school.

Swooping down on the area, they found the boys, but they were alone. Motsiri said the suspects were nowhere to be found.

The camp was set on fire. Residents praised the police for their good work.

Community members said: They like what the police are doing. They should root out all these fake initiation schools.

“They are messing up with our kids.”

Community members said children who return from illegal initiation schools come back corrupt.

“I wonder what they teach them there because when they come back they are unruly and disrespectful.”

It said it found criminal elements have crept into the ritual.

The current situation in the Sedibeng municipality is not a true representation of the cultural practice of initiation rituals " it said.

Brutal gang violence in the Vaal, like that recently reported between the Mopheme and Diamonds gangs early last year in Bophelong was reportedly linked to initiation schools.

Residents seem to agreed with the commission chairwoman Thoko MkhwanaziXaluva, who wants all initiation schools to be registered.

“Then residents will know who to talk to when the child turns into a monster after returning back from initiation schools.

The Commission said it is worried about violence, murders, rapes and attacks that take place in the mountains, and has begun and investigations, and into issue regarding initiation schools in Gauteng Province.

Who was Alan Paton?

A

lan Paton was born in Natal on January 11, Paton graduated from Maritzburg College in 1918; he went further to study at the University of Natal, where he graduated with distinction in physics. After leaving school, he became a science teacher.

In 1935 he became principal of the Diepkloof Reformatory for young black African offenders, and spent his 14-year stint pursuing a series of compassionate, and consequently controversial, policies.

These included open dormitories, work permits and home visitation, with offenders rewarded for good, trustworthy behaviour by being allowed to work and even reside outside the prison.

After World War Two he toured correctional facilities around the world, visiting the likes of Scandinavia, England and the US. During the trip he began work on his seminal first novel Cry, The Beloved Country, which was published in 1948 and laid bare the racial tensions in South Africa which would eventually become the apartheid system.

The moving book was critically acclaimed and spawned two movie adaptations, released in 1951 and 1995, THURSDAY (11 January 2018) marks the 115th anniversary of and a musical version called Lost in the birth of Author and anti-apartheid activist Alan Paton. Paton released several other books

on race and politics in South Africa in the 1950s and 1960s, achieving great success.

He also fought actively against apartheid, co-founding the Liberal Party of South Africa in 1953, which railed against the Apartheid legislation introduced by the ruling National Party.

The ascendancy of the apartheid government in 1948 signalled a descent into institutionalized racism unseen in South Africa and elsewhere on the continent. Under the leadership of Dr DF Malan, the National Party (NP) supported by strong Afrikaner nationalist sentiment was swept into power defeating General Jan Smuts and his United Party (UP).

Subsequent to this, the NP began enacting and implementing racially divisive laws.

This was met by strong opposition from the African National Congress(ANC), South African Communist Party (SACP), the South African Indian Congress(SAIC), the South African Coloured People's Organisation (SACPO) and the Congress of Democrats (COD).

In 1951, a number of people met in Pietermaritzburg to discuss a response to the increasing entrenchment of apartheid by the government. Amongst them were Alan Paton, Peter Brown and Henry Selby Msimang. Sometime in 1953, this group developed formed an organisation known as the Liberal Associa-

tion which brought together a number of liberal groups.

Alan Paton was among its founding members, which also included Leo Marquard, Margaret Ballinger and Edgar Brookes who all became its four vice presidents. Subsequently, branches were set up in various parts of the country including the Cape Town, Johannesburg, the Free State and the Natal Midlands.

The party was forced to disband in 1968 due to its members being both black and white. While Paton advocated peaceful protest against apartheid, his opposition incurred the wrath of the ruling regime.

In 1960, the author had his passport confiscated for 10 years without explanation upon returning from an award ceremony for the American Freedom Award in New York. It was returned only a decade later.

He met his first wife, Dorrie Francis Lusted, when he was still at school – they were married in 1928 and had two sons before her death in 1967.

Paton married his second wife, Anne Hopkins, two years later, and they stayed together until his passing in 1988, three years before the end of apartheid.

Paton was diagnosed with inoperable cancer of the throat. He died in Durban on 12 April 1988, continuing to write until his death.

Review: Sidwell Maboe Community Games held in Ratanda!

The Sidwell Maboe Community Games took place from 18 until 30th December last year, matches held at the Obed Nkosi sports ground in Ratanda. Teams were categorized according to the age groups (under 9, 11, 13, 15) with two open-age groups (Seniors and Masters).

Even though the December 16th holiday impacted the spectator turnout on the first day, the fans came to the party once they saw that the games are in session.

The aim of these games are to identify the talent and improve our community using soccer. The revival of soccer brings people together in a good way that unites the society for the love of the game.

This will help young people stay away from alcohol and drugs so that they enjoy the game and have a fresh perspective on life.

During the festive season, townships all over the country held soccer tournament for their respective local teams to entertain their fans and keep busy during the holiday period. The Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation helped organize some of these tournaments. One of them was the first annual Sidwell Maboe Community Games in Ratanda Township, Sedibeng District.

Talent development begins at home ans Sidwell has organized these games to find the ‘rough diamonds’ in his hometown that will soon shine among the country’s best.

The legendary man himself, Sidwell Maboe came to the offices of Mapepeza to share his review of the annual local soccer competition.

Maboe is the former striker who played for Orlando Pirates and Anazulu just to name a few. Today, his son Leohang Maboe, continues in his footsteps as midfielder for PSL side Maritzburg United.

Overall, the tournament went on good. In 2018, we want to see this baby grow bigger and better. We are open for people who want to sponsor this tournament, and especially hope they can work with us in building a better future for our youngsters in Ratanda.

Local business people can join in and give a helping hand as these community games are made for the residents who support them everyday, especially the youth.

Special thanks to Rofhiwa, Danny, Manyaza and many others for their support in making these games a success. Thank you to the community of Obed Nkosi and Ratanda for their support thoughout the games.

A big plea to parents of the kids who took part to come and support their talented children this December when the tournament comes back again.

Boxing SA releases starstudded list of nominees for Boxing Awards

The nominees for 2018 Boxing South Africa Awards were announced in East London on Wednesday, January 10 during a function attended by a number of special guests including the Minister of Sport, Mr Thulas Nxesi.

The list of nominees features some of the country’s finest products who have been making waves both at national and international level.

The Male and Female Boxer of the Year category will be closely contested – as it featured a star-studded line-up.

Zolani Tete, Azinga Fuzile, Thulani Mbenge and Kevin Lerena will battle for the coveted Male Boxer of the Year while Prudends Mapule Ngubane, Bukiwe Nonina and Noni Tenge have been nominated for the Female Boxer of the Year.

The announcement of the nominees was attended by the Minister of Sport, Mr Nxesi, Eastern Cape MEC of Sport, Arts and Culture Ms Pemmy Majodina and Boxing SA CEO Mr. Tsholo Lejake.

Speaking at the announcement, Minister of Sport, Mr Nxesi said: “Boxing Awards are part of Sport and Recreation South Africa’s commitment to promote social cohesion and nation building. It is important that we continue to recognise our sport luminaries for their personal achievements as well as promote them as role models for sport and healthy living.”
