BEFORE: Previously, Mapepeza Newspaper published the story of Kwanele Primary School’s situation.

AFTER: Gauteng Education department and OR Tambo International Airport donated a fully functional library to Kwanele Primary School in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.

On Thursday March 3, the O.R Tambo International Airport donated a fully functional library with four new computers, stationery packs with solar powered lights, and a R400, 000 cheque to Kwanele Primary School in Katlehong.

Tambo International General Manager, Ms Bongiwe Pitye said: "No one can deny that education does open doors that no one can close - that is why we are here today. We were touched when we found out about your challenges," said Ms Pitye.

But that's not all, as part of this initiative; the learners will have extra tutoring and counselling sessions for those that require the service. The learners will also get free eye screening from SpecSavers South Africa.

SUSPECTED BOYFRIED ARRESTED IN SOWETO! A dark cloud is hovering over Sebokeng in the Vaal where residents are still reeling in shock following the deaths of five people in a fire. The tragedy claimed the lives of five members of the Mokoena family.

On Saturday, March 12, thr Emfuleni Local Municipality facilitated the mass burial of the five victims of a house fire at Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Sebokeng Zone 14.

The fire which razed down the family home during the early hours of Saturday morning killed Nthabiseng Mokoena (44), her daughter Innocentia Mokoena (17) and niece Lesego Sebe (5).

Five-month old baby girl, Lebohang Mokoena and her mother Esther Mokoena (20) died at the Sebokeng hospital days after the incident, bringing the number of the deceased to five.

The family’s uncle, Michael Mokoena (63) survived the fire and is recovering in hospital.

Cushioning the massive blow suffered by the family, Sedibeng ANC Chairman and Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor, Mahole Simon Mofokeng is leading a programme to rebuild the family’s home in Sebokeng, Zone 13.

Mofokeng is also facilitating a mass funeral for the deceased, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 12th at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Sebokeng’s Zone 14.

Over the registration weekend, Mofokeng together with the National Chairperson who is also the Speaker of Parliament, Mme Baleka Mbete and Provincial Treasure who is also the Provincial Speaker, Mme Ntombi Mekgwe visited the family.

A facilitation process for assistance was pledged.

A day after the disaster, COGTA through the leadership of MEC Paul Mashatile immediately initi-

ated a process to rebuild the damaged Mokoena family home through Magotamisha constructions, which further committed to do donate the house within a week.

On Thursday, March 10, mourners packed the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex to bid farewell to the members of the Mokoena family who perished in the fire. Teachers, students and members of School Governing Bodies from Botebo-Tsebo Secondary School where Innocentia was a Grade l0 student and Motlotlo Primary School where Lesego was in Grade R, also attended he memorial service.

Meanwhile, police in Sebokeng have charged a 59-year old man with five counts of murder and arson.

The suspect, who is believed to be the boyfriend of the one of the deceased family members, was arrested in Soweto was brought in for questioning.

WE NEED WORK: Part of the five-thousand people who marched to the PRASA-Gibela Factory Centre in Dunnotar on March 2. The plant was officially opened two days later.

ON Wednesday (02 March); about 5000 people who came from KwaThema, Dunnotar and surrounding areas, marched from Dunnotar clinic to (PRASA) Gibela Railway Construction site – a seven kilometer distance that took four hours to cover.

The group was led by Miles Bhudu of the South African Prisoners Organisation (SAPO) and members of Members of the Unemployment People’s Co-Operative Federation of South Africa (UPCF-SA) and the Greater Nigel United People’s Parliament (GRENUPP).

According to the marchers, the purpose of the march was to present a memorandum to Gibela Construction Centre management in which they demand that people to be employed for the project must be local people and not anyone from outside their communities.

Although the job-seeking marchers did not apply to obtain permission to embark on this march, the law enforcers afforded them a safe and smooth passage throughout because they were well-behaved and orderly.

After handing over the memorandum

to Gibela Construction Centre management, submitting just under fivethousand CVs and giving the management of Gibela one week to respond, the marchers dispersed peacefully.

The 72 hectare plant, valued at approximately R1 billion based at Dunnottar, in the Ekurhuleni Municipality. The SOD turning event was held on the 4th, two day after the protest.

Approximately 30 hectares have been reserved for a Supplier Park.

This will house all the suppliers to the main manufacturing plant which are made up of SMMEs specialising in

various areas of rail-related manufacturing. Within the next ten years, the Supplier Park will become a Centre of Excellence for Train Manufacturing.

The main benefs to the affected community are that 1500 people will be employed at the plant. About 19 500 people will receive rail-related training at the on-site facilities skilling them to qualify for work in the rail industry.

ENTER THE FURNITURE DESIGN COMPETITION!

Overview of the Competition The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) National Furniture Design Competition is now in its third year and aims to: • elevate the image of the furniture manufacturing industry in South Africa • enhance its competitiveness locally and abroad through new product development and differentiation • attract designers to the sector • reposition the industry

Furniture design is a skill that needs to be developed in this country and the dti believes that once the concept of design is adopted in the industry, it will reinvent the way business is done.

The industry is becoming more customer-focused and requires innovative and skilled designers to meet customers' needs. The competition was piloted in the 2014/15 financial year under the theme Limited Spaces and the winner was announced at the Design Indaba in February 2015.

The competition has since grown and is receiving a lot of interest from students and manufacturers.

This year, the dti and its partners call

on South African design students and professionals to submit entries for office furniture under the theme Collaborative and Innovative Workspaces. The work environment and use of space is constantly changing to respond to different needs.

Guidelines to Entry • No registration fee is required i.e. it’s free to enter.

• Products design must be new, original and ready for production.

• The theme of the competition, ‘Collaborative and Innovative Workspaces’, seeks to promote workplace solutions.

Working environments and the use of workspace is constantly changing to respond to different needs. The designs must promote the use of local inputs.

• Entrants must submit technical drawings of the product (including the final product dimensions and 3D drawings), a description of materials and inputs to be used in production, and a description of the design and concept behind the design.

• Entrants may enter online or forward a hard copy of the entry form and all the compulsory information requested

to address provided.

• Multiple entries are possible as long as entry form for each is done separately.

• Entry forms must be signed and mailed to the dti.

Compulsory information to submit: 1. Technical drawing of the product (technical drawings must include the final product dimensions and 3D drawings) 2. NTIRHISANO IRONS-OUT CREASES IN SERVICE DELIVERY OF EKURHULENI!

Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Cllr. Mondli Gungubele along with a delegation led by Gauteng Premier David Makhura left no stone unturned during their visit to Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein in Tembisa on March 9 and 10.

The two-day Ntirhisano programme included inspections of service delivery sites where the delegation identified areas that require intervention to unlock service delivery challenges.

During a public meeting held at the Kempton Park Civic Centre, the Executive Mayor shared the City’s multibillion Rand plans of job creation, eliminating poverty, investment and the progress made in Ekurhuleni.

LOCAL TALENT: Sipho Nkabinde, uphoster and furniture designer from Ratanda township alongside his original ANC-themed sofa. Sipho’s business was profiled on Mapepeza Newspaper’s issue #12 on May 16, 2014.

Sipho started the uphostery business from his house to fix the furniture, car seats and bar stools, he progressed to do it for neighbours and the community.

s Secretary-General of the ANC, Gwede Mantashe has limited powers in the administration of the country’s political affairs. The role of becoming the Chief-Whip of the ruling party in Parliament is a fitting position for the struggle veteran.

Mantashe’s deputy in command, Jessie Duarte should be promoted to the ANC’s general secretary seat. The promotion of equality amongst the top ranks of the political structures, by ensuring the female leadership is embraced, can pave the way for moral regeneration.

When Nkosazana Dhlamini-Zuma’s term as AU Commission Chairperson has come to pass, she must return to South Africa to take over as speaker of Parliament. Even though some have looked at her as the next president, another worthy candidate has proven she can lead the country democratic state.

DIPALESENG Local Municipality has seen a lot of changes recently especially in the political leadership space.

This started when the former Executive Mayor, Cllr Sarah N Nhlapo and former Speaker, Cllr Phindile R Thenjekwayo requested to be released of their duties by rendering resignations both with immediate effect during a council sitting on the 18th February, 2016.

At the same sitting, Cllr Molato D Khanye who was then a Member of Mayoral Committee was elected as the new Executive Mayor to take over the reins.

Attempts to normalize the situation at the institution are slowly taking shape with the recent appointment of individuals to fill the vacant positions within the council.

Cllr Mafunda L Makhubu was elected as the Speaker of council and the two Members of Mayoral Committee are Cllr Didile S Sithole and Cllr Ahmed N Carrim.

These two councilors will be liable to assist the Executive Mayor with the execution of duties pertaining to the daily operations of the institution.

ON Friday, March 4, the Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters supported the sod-turning event aimed at kick-starting the construction works for the planned state-of-the-art passenger train manufacturing plant.

“The start of construction for this brand new stateof-the-art manufacturing plant is a great victory for government policy and its focus in supporting and growing our country’s economy.

On March 4, Lindokuhle Kubeka together with the Bongiwe Qhinebe, were given a exclusive live on-air interview at Karabo fm in Sasolburg, Sedibeng. The interview was to discussion on the origins and core objectives of the Lindokuhle Foundation.

They were also talked about their next venture the project that they are about to initiate next within the community of Ratanda.

Their next project is called “I AM THE VOICE”, a public-speaking competition for all primary schools within the community of Ratanda.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, 19 March 2016, from 10 a.m. at the Ratanda Old Hall. The topic for the competition is: WHAT RIGHTS SHOULD A CHILD HAVE AND WHY? Rules: All participants must wear the school uniform from their respective schools. Each speaker is given three minutes to present their arguments and motivations.

If your reason is because you want to realize a dream for which you have a vision or purpose and you have a product or service that fills a gap or need in the market and launching this product or service will give personal satisfaction first as well as an income, then you might have a recipe for success.

• Schools must have sports included in the curriculum of every child, because an active body ensures a healthy and active mind.

• Boost the “Sports on Wednesday” programme in all Lesedi schools to encourage participation by community stakeholders.

• Having the sectors of the Lesedi economy, including the public and private sectors to contribute towards providing sponsorship opportunities endorsed by LSC. • Monitoring of teams and federations in sports to make sure that no negative influences within these structures does not harm the talent of local players or their ability to grow further. This has been seen in the behaviour of some coaches in the LLFA, or Lesedi Local Football Association, where children pick up the negative habits of older unsupervised players.

The opening remarks by the chairperson, Disko Phadime, gave the attendants a clear explanation of the local sports council’s goals.

“The Lesedi Sports Council is a multi-coded umbrella body combining all active sport, recreation, arts and culture organizations in Lesedi,” said Disko.

He also quoted on the various responsibilities of the LSC; some including the assisting of teams to get equipment and other much needed resources, managing the relations between sports federations and the local government’s relevant departments,
