On Friday, (January 29) young community shapers, Lindokuhle Foundation from Ratanda Township embarked on yet another drive in honor of their Hands of Mercy campaign.

Lindokuhle Foundation founder and chairperson, Lindokuhle Kubheka said the campaign is inspired by the local school children who persist in going to school regardless of their deprived conditions.

“We were thoroughly humbled by our encounter with kids from extension 5, as we were handing over clothes and shoes to them,” he said.

The ''Hand of Mercy'' shoe and clothes donation project is has made a difference in people’s lives around Ratanda.

The members strongly believe that mercy needs action in order for it to be effective.

MEC LESUFI VOWS TO SAVE ‘BUS SCHOOL!’

BY Lerato Mailoane Officials from the Gauteng Department of Education on Tuesday (February 9) visited Kwanele Primary school in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni after media reports that pupils have been forced to use a bus as a classroom because of a dire shortage of facilities.

Following the visit, MEC Panyaza Lesufi discovered that the school had exceeded their class limit without the department’s permission and children were then taught in their scholar transport.

According to the department’s Oupa Bodibe the Department of Basic Education’s norms and standards on school infrastructure state that the average space for a pupil in school must be at least 1.2 square metres, with a maximum of 40 pupils in a classroom.

Bodibe said the school would no longer use the bus, “learners were forced to use the bus when they had their vernacular lessons but the MEC has warned the school this is unacceptable and they should instead keep the children in their respective classrooms.

He further said district officials had already been sent to Kwanele to assess the situation. “It must be noted that the department is facing an increased demand for space in most of our schools, and we are doing everything possible to address the situation,” he added.

The department would receive a comprehensive report soon and a lasting solution would be devised to ensure this never happens again, concluded Bodibe.

The Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation recently hosted a summit to engage people within the SACR (sports, arts, culture & recreation) sector to reduce or stop drug abuse.

The group was comprised of the Gauteng Provincial representatives; the group from Ratanda made up of Lesedi Sports Council members and residents, and a diverse group of substance abuse victims.

Thabang Mokoena, a drug addict who was born and raised in Mapetla Township Soweto, says he wishes to part ways with his addiction. Thabang grew up with no parental figure, as he grew he would sometimes eat, sleep and bath at his neighbours house.

The victims have also appealed to government on any solutions for their drug addiciton and help relieve the socio-economic problems that lead people to this dreadful habit.

umelo Motaung AKA NSUDU was born in and raised in Ratanda Township, where he stayed with his mother (Letttia Khanye) and father (Lesole Motaung) who later divorced when Tumelo was 12 years of age.

“After that fragile moment in my life, I discovered my talent and capability in singing,” he said.

In March 2009 Lebo Tshabalala (friend) who has now passed on with her sister Maki Tshabalala in-

vited Nsudu to a church he’s never been before.

“I joined the church (Faith mission church of God) and I participated in praise and worship. I was the only male singer there,” he mentioned.

Nsudu got a job at U-save in Rensburg as a general assistant and that limited his time for church.

He would attend once or twice in a month sometimes not at all. In his six year church going life he would compose songs of his own,

At the time his father had turned away from him, ignored him, shut him down when ever Nsudu reached out to him. His father was engaged to another women and it was when he needed him most.

In January 2011 Nsudu’s mother

was released from hospital, that’s when he wrote another song titled “Uthembekile Ezwini Lakhe”.

Two years ago, he joined a group called ‘Ama-Lumia’, which lead him astray and distanced him with his dream.

“After a year I realised the down-fall and good that was slowly fading away from me,

so I then left the mischievous group to pick up my talent and start again.”

Nsudu says he has much more to tell and wishes to release an album to spread the word of GOD and his might to the rest of the world.

Compensation Fund Procedures for claiming compensation for death due to occupational injuries and diseases.

The Compensation Fund services are freely available!

If the accident/disease resulted in the employee’s death, the following documents should be submitted to the Compensation Fund by the widow/widower/ children and other dependants to claim for compensation without delay:

• Copy of the bank statement’s first page indicating the name of the bank account holder, address and bank account number • Recent certified copy of the claimant’s ID document.

• Employer’s Report of an Accident or Disease (W.Cl. 2 or W.Cl. 1) • Certified copy of the employee’s ID • Documentary proof of death, i.e.:  Death certificate or  Post Mortem Report or  Medical certificate indicating the cause of death • Duly completed Declaration by Dependant Widow/ Widower/Guardian form (W.CL.32)

THESE DOCUMENTS SHOULD NOT BE OLDER THAN THREE MONTHS

Attested by a Commissioner of Oaths • Notice of Accident and Claim for Compensation (W.CL.3), page one and two by the claimant • Birth certificates of the children under the age of 18 years at the time of the accident • Certified copy of the widow/widower/claimant’s ID document • Specified Burial Expenses Account (W.Cl.46) with receipt(s) if paid • Marriage certificate/proof of Customary Union or if not available, sworn statements by the widow/widower and a person in authority (Counsellor, tribal chief, headman, magistrate) confirming that:  The widow/widower and the deceased were living together as husband and wife, and since when  The children are the employee’s own natural children born of this relationship  The employee had no other wife/s that he lived with,  The employee had no other child/ren that was financially dependent upon him/her for the necessaries of life BANKING DETAILS: The office also requires the banking details of the claimant to pay the compensation directly into the claimant’s bank account. The following are required: • W.Ac. 33 form in respect the banking details • Proof of residence (Municipal account etc)

All required documents can be obtained from the website of the Department of Labour: Compensation Fund.

COMPENSATION BENEFITS: Upon receipt of the claim documents, liability will be considered and the following compensation benefits are payable in the case of a fatal claim: 1. Burial Expenses 2. Lump sum to the widow/widower 3. Monthly pension to the widow/widower/children under the age of 18 years.

4. If there were any other dependants (if there was no widow/widower or children under the age of 18 years) that were financially dependent upon the deceased, (father/mother/brother/sister/grandparent) they also have the right to claim and their claims will be considered accordingly.

5. Partially/Wholly dependency – only applicable where the employee had no wife/children but the persons were financially dependent upon the employee.

Compensation (this means 75% of the employee’s salary as at the time of the accident) to a widow or a widower is calculated at 40% of the compensation the employee would have received if he was 100% permanent disabled. (E.g. Salary X 75% X 40%) Children are entitled to 20% each with a maximum of 60% to all the children under the age of 18 years.

(Salary X 75% X 60%)

In the case where the employee had more than one wife/more than three children, the compensation due to them will be divided equally between all of them.

E.g. the employee had two wives at the time, the 40% will then be equally divided between the two wives (20% each) and in the case where there are for example 8 children between the two wives, the 60% will be divided proportionally between all eight children.

When a dependant dies or a child under the age of 18 years gets married, the office has to be informed.

Children are only entitled to a monthly pension until the age of 18 years. In the case where a child has turned 18 years and is still at school, the parent/ guardian should submit proof (letter from the school indicating that the child is still at school and actively attending school and whether the child passed the previous examinations/quarter). The monthly pension will then be extended until the end of that year or on completion of the child’s secondary education. Applications must be done annually.

If the child is undergoing tertiary education (diploma or degree) extension of the pension can also be granted upon documentary proof. All cases are considered on their merits. In the case where the child is failing, the pension will not be extended for another year.
