All systems go for SONA! I.E.C ready for local elections!

With just two weeks before President Jacob Zuma takes to the podium to deliver the State of Nation Address (SONA), Parliament’s Presiding Officers say their preparations are at an advanced stage.

The officers are confident that Parliament will again host a successful event, which also marks the opening of Parliament.

President Zuma is set to deliver his address to a joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament, the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 11.

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete said on Thursday, preparations for the event had already begun last year.

“This is an annual event and our preparations started last year already around September as this is the single most important activity of the country.”

The SONA is important for all South Africans as it outlines government’s Programme of Action for the year ahead and also gives the President a platform to provide an assessment of the country’s current political and socio-economic state.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it is satisfied with the preparations being made ahead of the 2016 local government elections, and they are running ahead of schedule.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer Mosotho Moepya on Thursday, January 28 said about R1.5 billion has been set aside for the 2015/16 financial year for the upcoming elections.

The IEC this year has about 218 000 electoral staff.

The date of the elections is yet to be announced, although the voter registrations will be open on 5 and 6 March.

Moepya said 22 500 voting stations will be open on these two days nationwide for citizens to register for elections.

The Chief Electoral Officer was briefing media in Jo-

hannesburg following a meeting between the commission and stakeholders earlier in the day.

The commission’s Vice Chairperson Terry Tselane said the purpose of the meeting was to ensure the enforcement of the Electoral Code of Conduct ahead of the 2016 local government elections.

Tselane said political parties were part of the preparation processes and they were able to raise issues that needed to be addressed.

“All in all we are satisfied with what we have been able to achieve,” said Tselane.

He said the commission will continue to meet with political parties through the party liaison structures.

It has been observed that conversations between the commission and political parties have not been sufficient.

The school year has started off on a high note for learners at Phelang School in KwaThema.

school who are in need received school uniforms and hampers from Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor as part of his Adopt-a-School programme.

"As such the City of Ekurhuleni, under the leadership of the Executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele, saw it fit to extend this gesture to the children of this school who are somewhat marginalized by the community."

ADOPT-A-SCHOOL RESTORES LEARNERS’ PRIDE AND DIGNITY!

Dressing in school uniform makes a child have dignity, pride and confidence, which inspires better academic performance and reduces social anxiety amongst other learners.

This is the purpose of Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor’s Adopt-a-School campaign which commenced on Thursday (January 28) at Thoko Thaba Secondary school in Thokoza, where 100 learners received brand new school uniform.

Patrick Nkosi, a learner at the school, wore a torn jersey and different coloured pants to other children. He was elated to receive a proper uniform, especially because the donation would bring relief to hos grandparents.

“My grandparents are going to be so happy when they see my clothes. Gogo has been trying to save money towards buying my school uniform. This is going to make my grandmother extremely happy. Thank you Mr Mayor, thank you,” said Patrick.

The Adopt-a-School drive continued again on Friday at Winnie Mandela Secondary School in Tembisa where 200 school uniforms were donated to the school which the Executive Mayor adopted in 2014.

Speaking to the learners at Winnie Mandela Secondary School, Cllr. Mondli Gungubele stated that since the establishment of the Adopt-a-School initiative, the municipality has seen the positive effect it has in assisting the less fortunate.

“We will continue touching lives, this is not only about donating school uniform but adopting schools and assisting them to address other socio-economic issues that learners in the identified schools are faced with,” said Gungubele.

The Mayor further encouraged the learners to take their education seriously so that they may be able to enjoy the freedom that comes with the rewards of being an educated person in society.

Waking up to the news that one has obtained excellent results for their matric finals is exciting, however without the financial means to further one’s studies, the celebration may be short lived.

In total, the City of Ekurhuleni has awarded 848 deserving students with bursaries this year in addition to the 403 students whose studies are already being funded by the municipality.

The Executive Mayor also awarded the best performing school, the best performing school in a priority area and the most improved school with a total of R15 000 each towards a developmental project of their choice.

The bursaries will cover the learners’ tertiary registration fees, tuition fees as well as accommodation. They were also presented with a laptop and Ekurhuleni sporting gear.

Other highly-coveted awards won included the Best Performing School (by Bracken High School), Best Performing High School from Priority Schools (Masiseben- The Number One Achiever: Pheziwe ze Secondary School with 95% pass rate), Mkhalani was crowned the Honourorium Most Improved School (Springs Technical Award from City of Ekurhuleni Mayor MonSchool), Best Performing GDE District (Ekurhuleni South, recording the most improved district in Gauteng although overall Ekurhuleni North remains the best performing district).

Why Do White People Despise Blacks!

T

here is no doubt that the recent social media posts by white supremacists referring to blacks people as animals and uneducated dirty masses are mere symptoms of a much entrenched phenomena of racism.

Anti-black racism has been the order of the day in South Africa and our twenty two years of democratic rule have dismally failed to uproot its causes. Why do white people despise blacks?

Why is it that they find it easy to look at us with disgust and undermine our humanity?

The answer to this question lies in the structural organisation of blacks lives, the material conditions that have been made exclusive to black people. What colonisation and apartheid did, was to make poverty, hunger, under-education, landlessness and cheap labour part of the exclusive identity of black people from generation to generation.

It did not matter that one black person, or a family, or a group were educated, maybe even better than other few whites, as long as the majority of black people lived in conditions of squalor, this remains the identity they all share.

It was a sign of arrogance shown to the whole nation that he is not remorseful of white supremacy and its legacy.

This tells you, right here in South Africa, a country with majority of blacks, that black people are of a much lower worth than the rhinos. President Jacob Zuma has congratulated the Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, on receiving the 2016 Martin Luther King Legacy Award for International Service in Washington DC, in the United States.

Mbete received the award on Sunday, January 18.

The Presidency on Monday said the award recognises individuals who have demonstrated distinguished leadership and have made contributions that have had a positive impact

in the global community.

“I congratulate Ms Mbete for being honoured with this award, which is named after one of the outstanding leaders of the 20th century.

“This achievement does not only recognise her distinguished service to our nation; it is also an affirmation of the calibre of leadership that South Africa has always and continues to offer to the global community,” said the Presidency.

Mbete is also the National Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC).

Each day we ask white people not to tell us that this is the case and they are shocked. We say to them; do not tell us that we live like rats and in absolute proximity to dirt. Each time we say it is racist, they do not understand how could naming facts be a bad thing.

But what they all forget is precisely that they as a group are the cause of the suffering and animalisation of black people.

What then is to be done? Economic freedom is the only answer to the transformation of the condition upon which white supremacy rests; the day black people attain economic freedom, white people will not only lack the basis to despise us, this despise will not affect anyone’s access to means of subsistence.

Economic freedom means the distribution of land to end congested townships and lead agrarian reform; nationalisation of mines and banks to fund free quality education, housing, sanitation and healthcare to name a few.

This will restore the dignity to black people and any other project that does not focus on this will only result in cosmetic changes. It will result merely in silencing whites whilst they continue to live their lives as white supremacist uninterruptedly.
