The province will be hosting a media briefing on January 6 2016 to announce the final provincial Grade 12 results at Linder Auditorium, Wits Education Campus. The call was made by the team of government Ministers dealing with water scarcity and drought, which is led by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Pravin Gordhan. The committee, which is made up of the Departments of Water and Sanitation; Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; Rural Development and Land Reform; and Cogta, warned that South Africa is a water scarce country. According to Minister Gordhan,
Cogta has written to all the mayors in the country to take various actions to respond to the situation. The response includes following the guidance of the Department of Water and Sanitation regarding the introduction of water restrictions and other measures to manage the situation; monitoring adherence to water restrictions and application of penalties where necessary; prioritisation of the repair of water leaks, and the promotion of water-efficient technologies such as low-flush toilet cisterns, rainwater harvesting and use of grey water for irrigation.
“Government is concerned about the impact of the water scarcity and drought to our communities, particularly households, hospitals and schools. It is for all of us in the country to take this situation very seriously,” said Minister Gordhan. Water scarcity is caused by the ongoing lower-than-normal rainfall, which started at the beginning of 2015 and has caused drought conditions across the country. The lower rainfall is caused by El Niño, a global weather pattern that
denies moisture to the sub-Saharan region. According to the South African Weather Service, the dry weather is likely to continue for the remainder of this year and into March 2016, a period during which the country normally gets most of its rain. “We are the 30th driest country in the world. Water scarcity is a serious issue in South Africa,” said Minister Gordhan, who added that the increasing severity of the drought is impacting negatively on the country in both social and economic terms.
Operation Fiela busts 168 suspects and seize 39 000 litres of alcohol! As police are intensifying crime prevention operations for the festive season under “Operation Fiela”, a total of 168 suspects were arrested between 17 and 18 December 2015 and more than 39 000 litres of alcohol were seized.
Thirty (30) of these suspects were arrested for alcohol-related offences and 25 suspects for drug-related crimes. Fines to the tune of R53, 000 were issued for traffic offences. Other suspects were arrested for various crimes including; driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of illegal firearms, possession of suspected stolen property, theft and undocumented persons.
Some of the focus areas for these operations included patrols in and around shopping malls and stop-and-search operations targeting illegal firearms, drugs and alcohol related crimes. At the same time police are also interacting with members of the community to sensitise them about crimes that are mostly committed during the festive season. Members of the community are also urged to report suspicious people and vehicles. Matric results expected in January 2016!
The 2015 matric results will be released on January 5th, 2016.
More than 800 000 learners wrote the examinations this year. Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, says there have been recent reports of cheating in Limpopo, but they have been dealt with the problem. “I thought we have dealt swiftly and sometimes even more aggressively about what could be the credibility threat. We got all 19-thousand kids in Limpopo, unfortunately the whole region to rewrite.”
Motshekga says even the children who were in far flung schools had to go and re-write the examination. Matric students can register and receive their matric results through SMS and USSD lines. For SMS option, send an SMS to 35685 which will include the learner’s ID number and student number. SMS’s are charged at R1. The USSD option, dail *120*35685#, put in their ID number and student number to register, once the results are available, they will get the results per subject. This option cost 20 cents per 20 seconds.

It’s that time of the year when students across the country will look for study opportunities for the new academic year at various higher education institutions.
It’s very easy for students to become victims of unaccredited or fly-by-night private institutions and must ensure the institution they intended studying with is credible. Accredited private institutions must be able to show you the following: • A certificate of registration with the Department of Higher Education and Training. It should detail the campus, provider and the qualifications offered. • All higher education qualifications need to be accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council on Higher Education. If they are not accredited they will not appear on the certificate referred to above. There is no other document detailing the accreditation, which is why checking if the qualification is on the certificate is an important step. • All qualifications must be registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) by South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) – students should ask for the SAQA NQF identity numbers. • All private Further Education and Training Colleges (FET Colleges) must be accredited by
Umalusi. Umalusi accredits private providers of education and training as well as private assessment bodies to offer tuition and/ or assessment for qualification(s) on the General and Further Education and Training Qualification Framework. R1.4bILLIOn set aside for qualifying students!
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has set aside a total of R1.4 billion to pay institutions upfront at the beginning of 2016 academic year. The NSFAS said the money will ensure that students who qualify for NSFAS funding don’t have to pay upfront registration fees, as was recommended by the Presidency. The Presidential Task Team on short-term funding challenges at universities recommended that all students who qualify for NSFAS should be assisted with upfront payment. “NSFAS, working with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), has confirmed the financial allocation for 2016/17 financial year to 26 universities. All Vice-Chancellors have received letters of confirmation outlining amount for each funding category - DHET General Funding; DHET Teacher training; DHET Final Year Funding; and DHET Disability Funding. “National Skills Fund allocations
have also been finalised as sent to universities. Administrative Guidelines on Funding will be communicated to all institution to ensure that rules pertaining to financial eligibility of students for NSFAS are applied consistently,” said NSFAS national spokesperson, Kagisho Mamabolo. Mamabolo said NSFAS technical teams made-up of support staff will be dispatched to all universities to provide support to the financial aid offices to ensure a smooth registration process. “NSFAS will work closely with all its key stakeholders across the higher education sector to ensure the implementation of all the recommendations made by the task team,” said Mamabolo. NSFAS also thanked President Jacob Zuma, government and the presidential task team for the intervention and continued support. “These achievements are remarkable and represent a major success in terms of government’s redress agenda.” Since its inception in 1999, NSFAS continues to make a positive contribution in the lives of many
South Africans in the post-school education and training sector. To date, the scheme has assisted 1.5 million students over the years and has disbursed over R50 billion in bursaries and loans since its inception. The significant growth of the scheme has been made possible by partnerships with other funders, institutions of higher learning, SETAs and other entities that support equal education opportunities for poor and working class households in South Africa.

ISSUE #22 - Mapepeza turns One A birthday for the newspaper, a milestone for the team. The publication has been surviving in an environment of hard competition and an aging media industry. Our efforts towards transforming the landscape using independent media has only begun. The newspaper had no major changes to it from this edition, however, we started serving more areas around southern-Gauteng, including the Dipaleseng municipality in Mpumalanga.
