BIRTH Anatola Setenane Mofoka (also known as Lolliepop or Lollie) was born in Katlehong, south of the City of Ekurhuleni on February 9, 1965. Growing up in a life of hardship and poverty during the apartheid era, Mofoka became a pillar of strength for his family. He never finished school and became an entrepreneur at a very young age, selling to train commuters at the station near his home.
Despite his background, Lollie always saw opportunity and acted on his ideas. LIFE Anatola is a family man who is father, brother and very close ally to many who call him a friend. He holds his family dear and will be remembered for his lasting role throughout his lifetime. Lolliepop always found a way to provide for his family, from being a street vendor as a child to his life as a respected businessperson. CAREER Throughout Mofoka’s journey as an entrepreneur, he always found a way to help those around him. He began his media career starting out as a magazine publisher of a car dealership title, Mzansi Wheels in 2008. This became the ideal sales platform for local dealerships looking for buyers in the townships. It is for this reason that we can only borrow the succinctly put words by poet Mongane Wally Serote when he shared a pain of brotherhood with his fellow poet Don Mattera, when he said, “It is a dry white season/ dark leaves don’t last, their brief lives dry out.” It is with great sadness to learn that Lolliepop Mofoka’ life, has also dried out. This reality, of Mr Mofoka laying gently to the earth, is in stark contrast to the fervent community activist and ever energetic man he was during his lifetime. He built a community newspaper that was to be a dominant feature of community media landscape in Gauteng. Mr Mofoka knew from the very beginning that big institutions are built through partnerships. It was with this foresight that from the early stages of his newspaper, he would frequent the City’s Communication and Brand Department’s offices in Bedfordview to drop copies of Mapepeza Newspaper. He was also forever present in the City’s events, and most importantly taking the lead in using the new technology of social media to communicate to his audience. Lesedi Municipality plagued by Coronavirus! In a small multiracial community covering areas like Heidelberg and Devon, the Lesedi Local Municipality seems to have an alarming rate of COVID-19 cases. In one week, the area has doubled its confirmed COVID-19 cases. As of Wednesday, July 15, 1022 positive cases have been reported with only 159 recoveries. In one day, the Lesedi’s COVID-19 had a dramatic increase of 281 cases (from July 13 -14). The surge in numbers was confirmed by the Gauteng Health department as accurate. This means the municipality is a hotspot for new infections in Sedibeng. Lesedi’s economic capital, Heidelberg has also been hardest hit with cases in its industrial and educational sectors. At

Ratanda school burglar caught in the act!
Ratanda police have arrested a 24 year old man after being caught stealing at Fountain Five Primary School in Ratanda. The suspect was arrested on Tuesday morning, July 7. “A law abiding citizen noticed unusual act the school. He keep a closed observation and noticed a man going in and out of the school premises carrying items. The community member immediately notified the police about the criminal act in the school premises,” explained police spokesperson Sargeant Gertrude Makhale. Responding to the complaint by Sector Patrol members was Sgt Lipson Mabote and Cst Kevin Molote led to the chase and arresting of the suspect. ”On arrival of the Police Sector Patrol members to the school, suspect started to run away, but police were on his toes and arrested him.” “When Police do crime scene verification and analysis, they found that the suspect force door and burglars open with unknown hard object. The suspect took out toilet papers and personal protective equipments (PPE) from the classroom where they were stored or placed. The items were valued at R600,” said Makhale. The Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Pule Phillip Mokoena applauded the marvellous good work done by Ratanda SAPS Sector patrol members and for their quick response to the complaint and arresting the suspect. Brigadier Pule Phillip Mokoena further shows his happines of Police rescuing the school properties especially the personal protective equipments that are meant to be used by school children for protection against COVID-19. He also thank the community member who blow the whistle against school vandalizors. Brigadier Mokoena urged members of the Service to patrol schools regularly and timeously to prevent vandalism and theft. The arrested suspect has appeared in Heidelberg Magistrates Court facing theft and business robbery charges.
An articulate truck caught ablaze at the interchange of Heidelberg road and N3 south near Roodekop section in Katlehong, south of Ekurhuleni.
According to reports, the truck was approaching an off-ramp from the freeway, driving direction Alrode industrial area near Alberton. The fire started at the truck horse, spreading through the first trailer loaded with bales of papers to the second trailer.
“Necessary stake-holders were on scene as well to assist with investigations, traffic control, safety from members of the public and rehabilitation of the scene. The road was opened for traffic after the truck was towed away from the scene. “The driver of the truck wasn’t found on scene and his whereabouts are unknown,” said Ntladi. Ekurhuleni Metro police officers are conducting investigations into the incident.
The incident happened on Tuesday evening, July 7. “The emergency services firefighters from Alberton fire station were immediately called to the scene. More backup from Hlahatsi and Wadeville fire stations responded with water tanker fire engines to the scene to help accomplish the mission,” explained City emergency spokesperson William Ntladi. The entire freeway had to be closed for traffic flow for the entire operation. Rest in Peace Mary Twala-Mhlongo! President Cyril Ramaphosa has joined the country in extending his deep condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and fans of veteran actor and esteemed member of the Order of Ikhamanga, Mary Twala-Mhlongo, who passed away on Saturday (July 5).
Aged 80, the distinguished thespian was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in 2019 in recognition of the versatility and longevity of her creative career. During her exceptional career, Twala-Mhlongo starred in many television and film productions, including, Sarafina, A Love in Africa and Taxi to Soweto, for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Award. She also had leading roles in many hit TV show like Skweezas, Yizo-Yizo and Hlala Kwabafileyo, which won her a Best Comedy Performer Award. In 2011, Twala-Mhlongo was nominated as the Best Supporting Actress at the Sixth Africa Movie Academy Awards. “Like millions of South Africans, I am saddened by the passing of a great icon of our nation’s creative community; someone who was a household name and face to all of us and brought home the joys, the struggles and the humour under pressure that characterises our national life. “We have lost a unique talent and an endearing human being, whose performances brought to life the meaning of being South
African, and appealed to South Africans of all generations. We will miss her dearly,” President Ramaphosa said.

Substitute teachers needed in public schools!
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is working hard to ensure there is a teacher in every classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the virus continues to spread rapidly. The DBE is calling on all unemployed teachers to register on the National Recruitment Database (NRD) for temporary employment as substitute educators in a public school.
“The length of the appointment will depend on the needs of the
school you’re appointed in,” the department said.
Remuneration will be per the conditions of the State. The applicant must possess a teaching qualification, have no criminal record and be registered with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) to qualify. The application form is available on https://www.education. gov.za/resources/forms.aspx and it should be submitted to NRD@dbe.gov.za with the
copies of the academic record, qualification certificate and SACE certificate.
“Your information will be made available to all provinces in which you choose to be employed,” the department said. New MEC for Social Development appointed!
Gauteng premier David Makhura has appointed Dr Thembi Mokgethi as MEC for social development on June 19. “Today, I am very pleased to announce that I have decided to appoint Dr. Nomathemba “Thembi” Emily Mokgethi as the new MEC for Social Development,” said the premier.

Dr. Thembi Mokgethi is a seasoned public official with extensive experience in government. With over 27 years experience working in government, serving as a municipal manager in municipalities. She was a member of the Gauteng Legislature and chairperson of the Porfolio Committee on CoGTA and Human Settlements.

New hope for rejected R350 applicants!
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is reassessing rejected applications for the COVID-19 R350 grant, which is meant to help those who are unemployed and receiving no other assistance. The agency believes it is wise to reassess applications before subjecting them to an appeal process, which comes at a cost and delays. SASSA said it is treating the issue as a matter of urgency, as it pushes to help the poor, who have been hit hard by the national lockdown. Last month, SASSA said it was receiving many grievances about the declined R350 grant applications. The agency at the time said the majority of applicants were already on the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) database or were qualifying to receive it. “In early June, close to 50% of processed applications did not qualify, in terms of the criteria. Over 70% of those that did not qualify were either receiving or qualifying for UIF benefits, according to the database that SASSA was using then to sift through the applications,” SASSA explained. However, SASSA decided to request an updated database to reconsider the declined UIF cases, instead of advising the aggrieved applicants to follow the appeals route. “Out of this reconsideration process, it emerged that 85% of the UIF cases, which were previously deemed not to be qualifying, actually qualify. They have been approved and are being made aware of this development individually, as and when such favourable decision is reached.”
GP to build first govtowned nursing college!
The Gauteng Health Department has signed the statute paving the way for the establishment of a single government-operated nursing college in the province known as the Gauteng College of Nursing (GCoN). Following the signing of the statute on Wednesday (July 9), the GCoN forms the umbrella organisation for known nursing colleges such as Chris Hani Baragwanath, Bonalesedi, Rahima Moosa, Ann Latsky, SG Lourens and Garankuwa. Under this new arrangement, the various provincial nursing colleges will be regarded as campuses under GCoN administration. The responsibilities of the college will be to ensure standardisation of systems and procedures including standard operation procedures for staffing, recruitment of students, curriculum development and implementation, targets and quality assurance. “Although the Gauteng College of Nursing will be launched in due time, there has been an urgency for the statute to be signed to allow the processes of centralising functions of the campuses into one central unit.

The GCoN has received the full accreditation from the Council of Higher Education, South African Nursing Council, and has been registered by South African Qualification Authority (SAQA). The signing of the statute is in line with Higher Education Act 101 of 1997. “This commitment reflects how as a department we have prioritised improvement of patient’s experience of care in our facilities, a priority that is intertwined with the nursing practice, nurses are mainly first point of contact with the department that the public interfaces with.
“I look forward to the transformation of nursing practice in Gauteng and I am convinced that the Gauteng College of Nursing is an important step towards this transformation.
“We recognise that although the nursing practice is one of oldest professions, it is still very important that it continuously evolves to meet the needs of the professions specifically as this relates to quality assurance and providing quality healthcare services to those we serve,” said Masuku.

His latest EP, Grinding, has earned him his first music award nomination. The awards are meant to recognize local artists in various fields like music, poetry and performing arts. The MAMA sets a platform for up and coming talent in South Africa, celebrating their hard work and dedication to their respective crafts.
Currently, K9 is working on his upcoming project named Urban Legend. “It will be dropping in a month or two and features the likes of Chali T, Mandla His Child, Fezz, Mazz Maghandi and more,” he said. SA Population approaching 60 million! Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) says South Africa’s mid-year population is estimated at 59.6 million in 2020.

According to StatsSA report on July 9, Gauteng continues to record the largest share of South Africa’s population, with approximately 15.5 million people (26%) living in this province. KwaZulu-Natal is the province with the second largest population, with an estimated 11.5 million people (19.3%) living in this province.

Northern Cape maintained its status as the province with the lowest population in the country with a population estimated at 1.29 million people. Western Cape has 7 million people, Eastern Cape 6.7 million, Limpopo 5.8 million, Mpumalanga 4.6 million, North West 4.1 million and Free State 2.9 million people. The report indicates that approximately 51.1% (approximately 30.5 million) of the population is female. According to the report about 28.6% of the population is aged younger than 15 years and approximately 9.1% (5.4 million) is 60 years or older. Of those younger than 15 years of age, the majority reside in KwaZulu-Natal (21.8%) and Gauteng (21.4%). Of the elderly (those aged 60 years and older), the highest percentage 24.1% (1.31 million) reside in Gauteng. The proportion of elderly persons aged 60 and has grown from 7.6% in 2002 to 9.1% in 2020. The report further shows that for the period 2016 – 2021, Gauteng and Western Cape are estimated to experience the largest inflow of migrants of approximately, 1 553 162 and 468 568, respectively.

SAFA clarifies ‘Return to Play’ situation! MZANSI FOOTBALL WORKING GROUP PLAN TO START GAMES FROM AUGUST 1st
STATEMENT FROM THE SA FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION here have been lots of distortions with regards to the issue of the return to play matter. The fact is, SAFA has always advocated for the resumption of football upon full compliance from the National Soccer League and we are looking forward to football resuming on the first week of August.

“We must however insist on the health and safety of players as prescribed by the world football governing body, FIFA. Here are some of the distortions and falsehoods which we would like to dispel. That SAFA is obstructing PSL from resuming: i) The truth is that SAFA has worked and is still working with the Special Member through the two organisations’ Joint Working Group to produce an agreed date on the return to play. ii) On Monday (13 July 2020), the Joint Working Group led by SAFA and NSL CEOs met and, after consultations with the SAFA Referees Sub-Committee, (SAFA) decided the appropriate date for the start of the league would be 1 August 2010. iii) This agreement was forward-
ed to the SAFA NEC and the NSL Board of Governors (BoG) and this was in response to the letter from the Government outlining compliance processes which placed the responsibilities of overseeing the whole process on SAFA. iv) The Joint Working Group has been working hard and we hope matches will commence on 1 August as planned. We have in the meantime begun processes to test match officials for covid-19 and put those who test negative through the mandatory FIFA fitness test. This is a requirement from FIFA who initially suggested thee weeks but we compromised on two weeks. v) The argument that SAFA is against the resumption of football is both illogical and false because international football will resume later this year and we cannot have a competitive national team without competitive domestic football. vi) Talk that SAFA has financial problems and wants to collapse the NSL is laughable to say the least. SAFA doesn’t have financial problems and we have recently paid all of our Regions, all clubs and players and we will continue to do so. SAFA will actually report massively improved financial results in the current financial year.
vii) SAFA wants a well-funded and well-run professional wing and anything to the contrary is opportunistic and dismissed with contempt by SAFA. SAFA has worked hard for PSL to commence on 1 August 2020 and we are looking forward to football commencing on that date. Bafana Bafana and the u23 team have to get ready for their respective upcoming assignments. The Senior Men’s National team has to be ready for the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup qualifiers while the u23 have to be ready for the Tokyo
