ESKOM says it has been inundated with requests to conduct investigations into scams that purport to sell “cheap electricity” vouchers.

According to the power utility, the dishonest scheme is promoted through social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp by duping people into paying for this “cheap electricity” through electronic funds transfers like eWallet and money market. Thereafter the scammers disappear and leave the customers destitute and out of pocket.

“Eskom is working with several law enforcement agencies to trace and prosecute these unscrupulous individuals. We want to urge the members of public not to fall prey to these crooks, but to report these acts of fraud to the police without delay,” said Eskom’s General Manager for Security, Advocate Karen Pillay.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has expressed its disappointment after the leaking of the Mathematics paper two exam.

According to reports, the matric exam papers were circulated on instant messaging platforms like Whatsapp.

It has been confirmed that candidates in Gauteng and Limpopo provinces were the first to receive the leaked papers in the early hours of Monday (November 16).

“The origins of the leak are not clear as yet,” confirmed the department in a statement.

Information sourced by our reporters reveal that Whatsapp study groups were used to circulate the question paper.

The department also confirmed that an investigation team is currently looking into this matter to assess the extent of the leak as other provinces have reported incidents of learners having the paper.

“The Department will investigate this matter fully and thoroughly, and will utilize the mechanisms it has at its disposal which are the examination protocol to identify the learners that may have had access to the paper,” said DBE.

SANRAL meeting unlock opportunities for local businesses!

Through its Horizon 2030 and transformation strategy, the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) committed itself to support black owned businesses and ensure their development and meaningful participation in the construction industry, says SANRAL Board Member Thamsanqa Matosa.

He was speaking at the road agency’s flagship Taking SANRAL to the People programme in the Heidelberg on Tuesday, November 5.

The Taking SANRAL to the People programme is an opportunity for SANRAL to interact with its stakeholders – from government, traditional leaders, business, and community-based organisation – and forge partnerships with them as part of its efforts to improve their area’s socio-economic conditions through its programmes.

Point Plan, adds Matosa, which is set out to facilitate better project-level liaison with local communities and structures. Establishing project liaison committees (PLCs) is an important function of the 14 Point Plan because these PLCs assist with, among others, setting up databases of local community members, and recruiting them to work on SANRAL projects.

The key priority project for Lesedi Local Municipality will be routine maintenance along national roads N3 and N17 which stretch across 4 main wards within the municipality.

Sanral’s Northern Region Project Manager Oakley Van Eyk highlighted that there will be specific work packages allocated to local SMME’s. “There will be a total of four work packages made available for subcontract along these RRM projects and will include: vegetation control which is made up of mowing and chemical control; general maintenance will be carried out like the construction of drainage systems and erecting of road signage to name a few” according to Van Eyk.

“Through the office of the Speaker and the two MMCs will drive the process. They will identify people who will represent all sectors of our communities. It must be people who have a pure interest in the people of Lesedi and ensure everyone affected gets access to information,” said the mayor.

The mayor called for all communities of Lesedi to unite and work together to benefit the most from the developments happening in the municipality.

During the question and answer session, local business owners expressed their concerns relating to how SANRAL will communicate its projects.

“We ask for SANRAL to share the information on the current projects so we can prepare ourselves,” Simphiwe Skhosana from Jameson Park proposed.

During the proceedings, representatives from SARS also joined in discussing how local contractors and suppliers need to be compliant before applying for tenders.

SANRAL’s stakeholder engagement coordinator Jullecsia Saul says that, by engaging on issues of mutual interest with stakeholders, SANRAL continues to share information about its continuing role in infrastructure development, job creation and skills development initiatives.

“The third and coming decade, will see SANRAL focusing on long-term visioning, a review of network growth, a review of its mandate, emphasis on relevance and concerted steps to deal with fair access to opportunities and correct the industry imbalances of the past.

Lesedi Local Municipality executive mayor, Councillor Lerato Maloka-Mkhize welcomed the SANRAL board for their contribution ans visit to the area. She urged local businesses to work together to create job opportunities for communities.

“At a time when we need an opportunity to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the pandemic, people in our communities were suffering and did not have much. So with the opportunities coming with SANRAL will help our people and sustain families,” she said.

Victor Lobi from the Lesedi Black Business Forum asked, “Out of the list of businesses attended today, can we create a database of every business so information can be shared to everyone? Can we also have the criteria for sub-contractors prior to the announcement of the projects so we can prepare ourselves?”

In response, SANRAL said it will consider all the points raised and will act on them.

Education creates employment opportunities for young people!

As part of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme, the basic education sector aims to create 200 000 employment opportunities for Education Assistants and 100 000 for General School Assistants.

and provide extra support to learners. General School Assistants will help schools to comply with COVID-19 protocols while ensuring that teaching and learning take place in a safe, secure and hygienic environment.

This, according to the department, will be accomplished through the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI).

The 300 000 employment opportunities are targeted at youth between the ages of 18 and 35 years old. Recruitment will take place at the community level, with schools required to prioritise candidates living near the school.

Provincial Education Departments have already started issuing advertisements to recruit qualifying candidates for this initiative using a wide variety of media platforms. Interested parties are urged to look out for the adverts in all provinces.

The BEEI seeks to address COVID-19 academic disruptions as well as some of the lingering systemic challenges.

“An orientation manual has been prepared and digitised to ensure that the young people get trained on their roles and responsibilities.

“In addition, various training programmes have been prepared to equip successful candidates with skills that will ensure they are ready to take up their duties as well as en-

The young people will start working in public schools across the country from 1 December 2020. The DBE has partnered with Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator to digitise the recruitment processes across the provinces.

The Ministry has collaborated with online-based educational platform Coursera to offer free courses to young people as part of efforts to fight youth unemployment.

“Our intention as government is to remove as many barriers as possible and enable young people to fulfil their dreams and career aspirations.

We therefore encourage them to take up these opportunities,” Ndabeni-Abrahams said on Tuesday.

The National Electronic Media Institute of SA (NEMISA), a digital skill training institute entity of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, will coordinate and facilitate the registration process for these courses.

“The collaboration is in line with the Minister’s commitment at her 2018 Budget Vote Speech, to train one million people in data science and related skills, to ensure that they take up opportunities presented by new digital technologies,” the Ministry said.

The Minister emphasised the importance of young people acquiring digital skills as they are imperative for achieving inclusion in the digital economy.

Rest in Peace Banyana legend Makhosini SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan has joined South Africans in mourning the passing of former Banyana Banyana player Makhosini Luthuli after a long battle with cancer.

The former Banyana Banyana star hung up her boots in 2006 after eight years playing for the women’s senior national team and was part of the crop of players that played in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

“We have lost a legend, one of the pioneers of women football following our readmission into the FIFA family,’’ said Dr Jordaan.

Banyana Banyana Senior Women’s national team coach Desiree Ellis who played with Luthuli also expressed fond memories of the player, remembering her as a hard worker.

“She was always smiling, a hard worker and very dedicated to serving the team,’’ said Ellis.

‘’We have lost an honest and principled individual. May her soul rest in peace,’’ added the Banyana Banyana coach.
