Just days before schools re-open, two schools have been looted and set alight.

The Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi has condemned the attacks on two schools, believed to be attacked on the same day!

Both incidents were reported on Thursday, July 4 by eye witnesses who took to social media to spread the word about the burning classrooms in Mountain View High School (in Heidelberg) and the Katlehong Primary School.

South Africans responded to the incidents after the MEC posted pictures of damaged classrooms on his Twitter account.

In response to these events, Lesufi has laid the blame on the communities for the damages and said the department may not help repair the damages.

Allegations suggest that the Katlehong community torched the classrooms due to an electricity cut-off, but this is yet to be confirmed by official reports.

In Heidelberg, no protests were reported and police are investigating both incidents. The Gauteng Education department officials have visited the schools.

Katlehong family of three perished in flames! Two brothers burnt to death in a shack fire!

Assistance from the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services firefighters couldn’t save the lives of the three family members from perishing after their home was guttered by flames on June 29 in Katlehong.

“An RDP house guttered by flames was reported and received by City of Ekurhuleni emergency life threatening Call Centre at around 20:55 Friday (June 28) evening in Dikole section Katlehong.

Firefighters from Palm Ridge and Zonkizizwe fire stations responded promptly to the scene for life saving Interventions,” said spokesperson William Ntladi.

On arrival, the hot flames were coming from the bedroom and the entire roof had already collapsed.

Information received on scene stated that the family was still

trapped inside. After the fire was extinguished, search and rescue was conducted and the burnt bodies of a toddler believed to be three months old, a four years old boy and their mother aged in the midthirties, were found in the bedroom. The scene was handed over to the police officers on scene.

The cause of the fire is still the subject of investigations, however it is alleged to have been caused by an electrical heater left unmonitored.

The City‘s Emergency Department strongly pleads with residents in Ekurhuleni to call (011) 458 0911 in case of any life-threatening emergencies for the swift activation and intervention of relevant resources.

Alternatively, they can use national emergency toll free number which is 10177 or 112.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) in its quest to deal with violent public protest in a manner in line with the constitution of the republic namely, in a non-lethal fashion, ordered seven Public Order Policing Vehicles or ‘Nyalas’ via TFM a company situated at Olifantsfontein in the City of Ekurhuleni. The Nyala is an agile and highly protected armoured personnel carrier to ensure effective policing for crowd management while ensuring safety of police members in riotous situations. Thus far, the EMPD has taken delivery of five Nyalas with the balance of two to be delivered by the end of June 2019. The Nyalas are security vehicles designed for patrol and crowd control management. The vehicles have ballistic armouring as well as ballistic glass for the protection of occupants. It is also fitted with a hydraulically operated front dozer blade capable of removing objects blockading roads and has roof-mounted cable cutters.

Ekurhuleni Emergency personnel found the burnt remains of two young men who trapped inside a blazing shack in Phola Park, Tokoza.

“Fire and Rescue team from Tokoza fire station swiftly responded to the scene after receiving the call for rescue of the victims of the shack fire.

On arrival, the backyard shack was surrounded by flames. Fire-

fighters strongly extinguished the fire without any further damage.

Unfortunately, on search and rescue, the two charred bodies of the two brothers aged thirty-one and twenty-two respectively, were found under the burnt structural material,” explained the Emergency spokesperson, William Ntladi.

The cause of the fire is still a subject of investigation by South African Police Services (SAPS) officers.

Heidelberg Police looking for robbery suspect!

Police have opened a house robbery case after getting a report of a house robbery along Jordaan Street in Heidelberg.

It is alleged that a 90 year old male home owner was alone watering his flower garden on Saturday afternoon (June 29) when the incident occurred.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate, it is reported that the home-owner decided to go out for shopping and when he entered into his bedroom, a male suspect came or emerged underneath the bed.

“The suspect took victim's wooden walking stick and started hitting him all over the body as well as kicking him.

The victim sustained bruises and

swelling on his head and body,” said Captain Tshilate.

The suspect took a photocopier machine and some money.

He then drove off in the victim's white VW Golf with registration number MTR 353 GP and is still at large.

The Heidelberg SAPS Station Commander Colonel Amanda Dorothy Viljoen appeals to the community or anyone with information about the whereabouts of the suspect or who might have involved in the incident can call the SAPS Crime Line 08600 10111 or sms to 32211.

All information will be treated with strict confidentiality.

Sedibeng youth get closer access to NYDA! On Wednesday, June 26 the Sedibeng District Municipality and the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) officially opened the Sedibeng Full Service Branch.

The NYDA centre is the one-stop-shop for young people in the area to get access to employment and entrepreneurship opportunities from the government agency.

The ribbon was cut and the centre opened by the

Sedibeng executive mayor, Cllr Busi Modisakeng and the NYDA’s executive management in front of a crowd of excited youth and media.

The NYDA Sedibeng Full Service Branch is located at the Mafatsane Hall in Evaton.

The NYDA offers business grant funding, business training, financial and non-financial support including job opportunities for South Africans under 35 years of age.

City Waste Depot heist suspects nabbed!

Ekurhuleni Mayor warns service providers against crime!

On Monday, June 24, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) arrested three suspects in connection with the robbery of goods from the City’s Germiston Waste Depot.

The robbery incident took place on the previous day (June 23), where suspects went off with the City Depot items including, vehicle tyres, office furniture, fridges, microwaves and other valuable assets.

Upon further investigation the EMPD uncovered that the suspects worked for a security company, which is also a registered service provider

of the City of Ekurhuleni.

The City is currently studying the contract it holds with the service provider and has suspended all business with the company.

Appropriate legal action will be taken against the company, without fear or favour.

The City will not be associated with criminals. “Last year we launched ‘Operation O Kae Molao’ with the intent of cracking down on criminality within the City.

We are now currently moving towards making weekly arrests of internal and external acts of criminality in our City.

Service providers must be warned that they are appointed to provide a service that is supposed to uplift communities in Ekurhuleni.

Our stance remains the same, no acts of criminality will be tolerated by the City.

We hope the courts make an example of these individuals, so that any other service providers who has ideas of robbing the City, think twice!” said Executive Mayor Masina.

The suspects are currently being held at the Germiston Police Station. Their court appearance date is yet to be confirmed.

Lesedi mayor delivers S.O.M.A at Heritage Museum!

The Lesedi Local Municipality-LLM has delivered the 2019 State of the Municipality Address in a packed hall at the Heidelberg Heritage Museum on Friday, June 28.

In her speech, Cllr Maloka spoke on the 'dream speech' of the President's State of the Nation Address by Cyril Ramaphosa. She said that even Lesedi has its own ambitious plans that are slowly becoming a reality.

On Employment : The mayor congratulated the ten female students that have been training at Vopak to become operators of the Jameson Park Terminal once its complete.

The facility has created many employment opportunities in the area.

On Tourism: Mayor Maloka spoke of the Heidelberg Heritage Museum, launched on Freedom Day, is the Municipality's flagship tourism destination.

On Service Delivery: About 96% of communities have access have access to water, electricity, refuse removal and sanitation services.

The Municipality has 4144 indigent residents that get free basic services and rebates on rates.

Cllr Maloka said the numbers are expected to rise and resources will be made to accommodate the numbers.

On Housing: Lesedi currently has three MegaHuman Settlements projects in Ratanda, Devon and Vischkuil. The Obed Nkosi project in Ratanda will yield a total of over 6000 houses. This year, about 1700 mixed income houses will be

developed. Other than RDP houses, serviced stands will be made available to residents who want land to build on their own.

On Governance: The mayor and Speaker, Mluleki Nkosi, spoke on the recently released Auditor General's report all municipalities in the country.

This year Lesedi achieved another Unqualified Audit opinion.

The mayor hailed Midvaal Municipality's fifth consecutive clean audit, saying Lesedi must learn from what their neighbors in the district.

She also said that it must be Lesedi's aim to get a clean audit in the coming years.

Budget: The total approved budget for Lesedi stands at R955 million for the 2019/2020 financial year.

Upcoming Projects: The executive mayor spoke on a few projects to be delivered by the Municipality and its partners over the coming year. * A Skills Development Centre will be built in partnership with the Services SETA. * Construction of an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Impumelelo be completed. * A Biogas fuel development project is coming soon. This is one of the dream projects for the Municipality according to the mayor. * Combi-courts across the townships of Lesedi will be constructed.

The mayor kept this year's address very brief.

This was explained by the speaker that the council had held a special council meeting to iron out

all the issues that have troubled the local government in the past few weeks.

These issues include the protest by local businesses that resulted in closure of the Municipality offices and suspension of development.

“Give us a 100 days to make a difference” Premier Makhura outlines Gauteng’s plan for the next five years!

The Gauteng Provincial Government has announced its key priorities to fast track the province’s path to prosperity as the country forges ahead to realise Vision 2030 of the National Development Plan (NDP).

The key focus for the next five years will be on the economy; jobs and infrastructure; education; skills revolution and health; integrated human settlements and land release; safety, social cohesion and food security as well as building a capable, ethical and developmental State.

These priorities will be driven under the NDP and the provincial “Our Roadmap to 2030”, which will be finalised in the first 100 Days of office, after consultation with various sectors and stakeholders.

Under each set of priorities, the province said there will be bold initiatives to deepen the implementation of the programme for Transformation, Modernisation and Re-industrialisation.

This was announced by Gauteng Premier David Makhura on Monday (july 1) when he delivered his first State of the Province Address (SOPA) following the 6th General Election in May. At a packed University of Johannesburg campus in Soweto, Makhura said Gauteng - as the engine of South Africa’s economy - will contribute more to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s initiatives on economic recovery, investment, industrialisation, youth employment and township economy.

The Gauteng economy attracted R199 billion of foreign direct investment and 469 000 new jobs were created in the past five years.

Makhura said this will be the ground the province will use to attract new investments such the Tshwane Automotive Hub, which is going to see significant investments and job creation in the Gauteng economy as a special economic zone.

Going forward, Makhura said his administration will focus on huge employment potential sectors such as automotive, capital equipment and rolling stock manufacturing; agro-processing, food and beverages; business process services and ICT. Finance and retail; tourism and hospitality; creative and cultural industries; logistics and warehousing; and the green economy will also be key focus sectors.

“The joint sector-based initiatives between all government and business are beginning to unlock the growth and job creation potential of different regional economies or corridors. This is a social compact in action,” said the Premier.

Growing the Township economy Another focus, which Makhura hopes will reignite and grow the economy, is township business, cooperatives and SMMEs. “We believe more jobs can be created by small and medium-sized businesses if they get appropriate support from the whole of government,” he said, noting that the province has learned some lessons in supporting township business through infrastructure development and access to markets through government procurement worth over R20 billion.

Going forward, Makhura said they will, among others, target and enforce procurement from businesses in townships to the value of 30% of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s procurement budget.

The province will also ensure that all SMMEs and township businesses working with the provincial government are paid within 15 days to boost their sustainability. There will be a sustained drive to rejuvenate township industrial parks, agri-hubs and local produce markets.

“In the next five years, the province will be releasing land and unutilised buildings to allow those who can create real jobs and businesses

in our townships to apply for leases from the provincial government for properties where they can start those businesses,” Makhura said.

The nine Ekasi Labs will be expanded to provide high-speed broadband in all townships where young people can practice new digital trades and learn through existing programmes such as Tshepo 1 Million.

Increasing economic footprint, securing jobs for youth Currently, the province has more than 200 active FDI projects emanating from Gauteng-based businesses in different regions of the continent.

These projects sustain 45 000 jobs in the provincial economy and also create jobs in the destination countries.

Over the next five years, the province will introduce special economic zones (SEZs), where feasible and necessary, to add momentum to turning the Gauteng City Region into a single, multi-tier and integrated SEZ. With regards to youth employment and empowerment, Makhura announced that government is working towards placing 250 000 young people into long-term jobs in the various growing sectors of the economy in partnership with Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator and the Youth Employment Service (YES) programme.

A further 250 000 young people will be placed in long-term public works employment programmes.

The Welfare-to-Work programme will also be expanded to reach 100 000 unemployed young women, who are currently dependent on child support grants.

The province will also continue with a mass digital learning and digital skills programme to reach over one million young people, especially out of school youth.

The new policy, which will be implemented after engaging the sector, will make it mandatory for all service providers that do business with the Gauteng government to hire and train young people.

Fourth Industrial Revolution skills and a centre of excellence for digital economy breakthroughs such as Artificial Intelligence, crypto currency and big data,” Makhura said.

Other initiatives include increasing the number of Schools of Specialisation from 17 to 35, and visiting health facilities to improve standards.

Health and safety As part of improving mental health services, Makhura said they will ensure that 10% of district hospital beds and 5% of regional hospitals beds are set aside for acutely ill mental health care users.

“We will integrate mental health and rehabilitation services in all public health care facilities.

We will also strengthen community awareness campaigns on mental health.”

In collaboration with municipalities, the province will make available 100 000 serviced stands with minimum building standards as well as fasttrack the rollout of mega infrastructure projects for new nodes and cities over the next five years.

On safety, one of the new initiatives will be regular performance audits of all 142 police stations and Community Policing Forums and the release of bi-annual reports on the performance of every police station to enhance accountability. Makhura hopes that this will contribute to the target of reducing crime by 50%.

School safety will be elevated to Premier's office for priority.

“We want our children to be safe in all schools.

We will focus on the worst schools [when it comes to] gangsterism, violence and drugs and regular raids and searches will be conducted by the SAPS. We say no to weapons and drugs in our schools,” the Premier said.

In the first 12 months, Makhura said they we will deploy 10 patrollers per ward in all 508 wards in Gauteng and revive and professionalise Community Policing Forums in all police precincts.

Essential infrastructure and 4IR Turning to infrastructure, Makhura said Gauteng will use its R60 billion infrastructure budget to improve access to water, sanitation, electricity, housing roads in deprived areas, completing urban renewal projects as well as the maintenance of existing government buildings, including schools, clinics and hospitals.

Makhura announced several initiatives that the province will introduce in the next five years.

One such initiative is the appointment of an advisory panel that will advise the provincial government on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in the first 100 Days.

Ekurhuleni’s Environment and Waste Management Department had the privilege to celebrate Mandela Day with the Maake family in Ward 108, Katlehong South. The officials, joined by various stakeholders, adopted this family to their social responsibility campaign, as they recognize the living conditions of the family (the mother and daughter living with disabilities). The Helping Hand Project is a community initiative which invites members of the community to make a difference by simply visiting the centre and providing a painted handprint. For each individual handprint received, the centre donated R5 towards equipment that a local home, school or charity in the community requires to assist their day-to-day operations.

Heidelberg Mall hosted their first ever Helping Hand Project on July 15 and 16, committing the local shopping center to community upliftment in the Heidelberg area and surrounding communities.

City of Ekurhuleni’s Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina led the Nelson Mandela Day celebrations with the city’s officials spreading far and wide across the city to carry out the ideals the icon stood for. The Katlehong School for the Deaf and Blind was visited by employees of the local McDonald’s Restaurant and group BASA (Banking Association SA,) who shared their 67 minutes having fun with the school kids from various parts of Ekurhuleni. The kids were entertained with goodies and had their faces painted.

The ANC Ekurhuleni Caucus, led by ANC Chief Whip Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi in conjunction with the City of Ekurhuleni officials handed over well rebuilt house in Daveyton. This after the Ekurhuleni Caucus through Taking Caucus To The People (TCP) programme visited the family of five orphans late last year and commitment to re-build the house.

The family’s ordeal was initially brought to the attention of the office of the Chief Whip by a neighbour who requested that the family be assisted. The house was in a bad condition, and it posed danger to the occupants, however, it has since been demolished completely and was re-build. In his remarks Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi acknowledged the business which re-built the house and donated some furniture to the family. Meanwhile, Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina said the ANC does listen to the concerns of the citizens.

The Heidelberg Heritage Museum hosted the 2019 Lesedi SOMA (State Of the Municipality Address) on Friday, June 28.

Guests included officials and political leaders from the municipality, the Sedibeng District, local businesspeople and leaders of civic and community organizations. The formal proceedings began with a parade by the TMPD (Tshwane Metro Police) marching band alongside the Lesedi Traffic and Emergency & Fire Department personnel assembled for the mayor’s inspection. The local museum’s ‘Ratanda Hall’ was well decorated and guest enjoyed the Mayor’s speech along with refreshments afterwards.

Gauteng Sports Awards want your nominations!

The Cosafa (Council of Southern Africa Football Associations) Womens Cup has been launched recently and the tournament is set to take place from July 31 until August 1 in Port Elizabeth.

Defending champions, Banyana Banyana have vowed to play their best and keep the title in South Africa.

Last year, the national women’s side played impressive football during the Cosafa Womens Cup

tournament, scoring 13 goals and conceding only two – against Madagascar (group stages) and Cameroon (final).

Banyana had six goal scorers – Linda Motlhalo scored four, Khanya Xesi three, Jermaine Seoposenwe and Jane two each, while Kgaelebane Mohlakoane and Nothando Vilakazi chipping in with one each.

In this year’s edition, Banyana have been drawn into Group A alongside Malawi, Madagascar and the Comoros Islands.

Team Gauteng returned home as champions of the National Schools Winter Championships which took place in Ethekwini, KwaZulu-Natal. Learners from all provinces participated in sport competitions consisting of seven sporting codes (Soccer,Netball, Rugby, Chess, Volleyball and Tennis). The Gauteng MEC for Sports, Recreations, Arts and Culture Mbali Hlophe and officials from the department congratulated Team Gauteng in their performance in the competition.

This year’s edition of the Gauteng Sports Awards is promised to be bigger and better.

This is according to MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mbali Hlophe (pictured), speaking at the launch of the annual ceremony on July 2 at the Johannesburg Stadium.

Nominations are now open with members of the public expected to submit their nominations at various outlets across the province.

The prize money has increased for finalists of all categories from R7500 to R10,000.

Amounts for the winners is yet be announced.

A 15% increase will be added to the prizes, with more in store for people who participate via the public (SMS) competitions.

The theme as announced by MEC Hlophe is focused on the 25 Years of Democracy and growing Gauteng together.

Gauteng public, sports fraternity including clubs have an opportunity to nominate their sport stars for the 2019 Gauteng Sport Awards.

She urged people from all walks of life, especially sporting talent from communities to participate and be recognized. Not only have has the Gauteng Sport Awards re-

warded athletes, players and administrators for their efforts in the world of sport but continues to unearth raw talent and endeavours to nurture and develop these talents with the aim of becoming giants in their disciplines. The Gauteng Sports Awards are truly unique in the way the public is incorporated and brought into the process of deciding the worthy winners.

Residents of Gauteng have a proud history of supporting their heroes and rooting for their teams.

The Gauteang Sport Awards promises to be a night of the stars as the Gauteng sports world come together for a night of celebration, excitement and recognition.

Nomination forms will be available at the provincial offices, libraries and sports council offices.

Also, forms can be downloaded from the Gauteng Sports Awards website (www.gpsportsawards. co.za). The closing date for the submission of nominations ends on Wednesday, July 31. All nominations considers must cover any sports event, achievement that occurred between June 2018 and June this year.
