an empD officer from the equestrian unit on Tuesday afternoon (July 19), sustained a gunshot wound in the neck inflicted by a belligerent driver in a VW Golf 5 following a high speed chase in etwatwa. The suspect was shot and sustained fatal injuries.

The driver refused to stop and a high speed chase ensued until the VW Golf was cornered and stopped at the intersection of Chris Hani Drive and madikizela street in etwatwa.

The aggressive driver wrestled with one of the officers and in the process managed to grab the officer’s firearm during which time a shot rang out and the officer suffered a neck wound. The partner to the shot officer reacted swiftly and managed to shoot the bad guy who subsequently succumbed to his injuries. preliminary inspection of the VW Golf points to the vehicle being cloned.

The injured officer was rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention.

He said drugs and human trafficking are monstrous and devastating crimes that steals lives and degrades our nation. lieutenant General ntlemeza said the law enforcement agencies are

committed to doing everything in their power to protect victims and hold perpetrators to account. but he said police cannot prevent drugs and the violence on innocent children on their own. He called on the communities to act and work with police. meanwhile, the 16 girls rescued have been taken to place of safety. The owner and possibly the ringleader responsible for trafficking girls for prostitution is still being pursued by the Hawks.

The seven suspects will appear at the Kempton park and boksburg magistrate courts respectively on monday on human trafficking and drug related charges.

The 28 year old woman and the 37 year old man were arrested and taken to booysens police station where their bmW was also booked in.

Gugu Zulu loses life on Trek4Mandela!

Gugu Zulu, one of the climbers of the Trek4Mandela, lost his life while summiting Mount Kilimanjaro on Monday morning, July 18.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation has conveyed its condolences to his wife Letshego Zulu, their daughter Lelethu and his family.

“What we do know is that Gugu experienced problems breathing. The medical team supporting the trek put him on a drip and they descended the mountain with him.

“We are informed that the medical teams tried everything possible to save his life,” the foundation said in a statement.

According to the foundation, Gugu was climbing Kilimanjaro with his wife Letshego.

They both descended the mountain together with Richard Mabaso, the project leader and the medical teams. The team was led by experienced mountaineer, Sibusiso Vilane.

The mountaineer had apologized to the nation for this tragic event.

The late Gugu Zulu was a South African racing driver and television personality who won numerous local racing titles. He was also a presenter of the SABC motoring show Car Torque.

sortium (Gibela) – about to start construction of a R1-billion factory complex at Dunnottar for the manufacture of 580 new trains for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa – has rejected demands contained in a joint memorandum received recently from community-based organisations Greater Nigel United People’s Parliament (Grennupp) and Unemployment People’s Cooperative Federation of South Africa (UPCF-SA).

In its response to the memorandum, issued by communications director Pamella Radebe, Gibela says the rejected demands are “designed to undermine its governance systems and procedures by relinquishing them to third parties”.

Gibela says the two organisations have no legal basis for demanding: • Removal of contractors and subcontractors the company has appointed; • Management and operation of an access system on the construction site, without a formal tender system; • Access to all sourcing opportunities; • Selecting local CLOs at the construction site; • Establishing a fully functional office at site; • Forming part of the adjudication of tenders; and • Selecting local sub-contractors and suppliers.

Gibela, in its response, goes on to say it is factually incorrect for the memorandum to assert that Gibela is a government entity and that the company does not carry a mandate as described in the memorandum.

“Gibela is a privately held company, registered in the Republic of South Africa and Black Economic Empowerment-compliant with its share equity held by Alstom, Ubumbano Rail and New Africa Rail.

“The Companies Act of South Afri-

ca, as well as Gibela’s world-class internal governance systems and procedures set forth in the parameters for the operations of the company on which it is audited periodically and annually by registered accountants.”

In response to the two organisations’ demand for an emergency meeting, Gibela says two members of the Stakeholder Forum do not have the authority to request an urgent meeting without a quorum.

“In the event that other stakeholders deem it necessary that such an emergency meeting be held, an agenda must be proposed, together with consent from the remaining stakeholders.”

In response to allegations regarding its recruitment process, Gibela says it has partnered with the Department of Labour in an open and transparent process designed to ensure a central collection point for CVs for all jobs required at site.

Contractors and sub-contractors at site are required to source labour from this pool of CVs. “To date, 12 000 CVs have been collected and, in line with the job requirements of a construction site that is still at mobilisation stage, 85 people have been recruited.

“Over the next few months, it is envisaged that 1 900 people will be recruited and employed on limited duration contracts.

“The recruitment drive is still on and people are encouraged to submit their CVs to the Department of Labour Centres in Nigel, Springs, Brakpan, Benoni and Boksburg.

In response to allegations of corruption, Gibela says it encourages and is open to receiving proof of illegal activities involving its employees and partners via the alert procedure, as communicated to all stakeholders and the relevant authorities, for prosecution.

Government has launched a set of new look condoms, which it hopes will attract young people, following complaints that the previous ‘Choice’ condoms lacked appeal and were not attractive to young people.

and already, the new max condoms are proving popular among the target audience.

Health minister, Dr aaron motsoaledi, who launched the condoms at the international aids Conference in Durban, said a lot of research went to producing them.

Condoms are still viewed as the most effective way of preventing sexually transmitted diseases and government distributes millions of them each year. Young people are at high risk of contracting HiV from unprotected sex due to increased risky sexual behaviour, especially with the use of narcotics and alcohol among this group.

“The new max condoms are reliable. They give maximum protection, maximum pleasure and maximum safety,” minister motsoaledi said to loud chuckles.

THe Department of Health, Vodacom and management sciences for Health (msH) have joined hands in presenting the stock availability solutions for healthcare facilities on Thursday, July 14. The sVs-Web app and the Rxsolutions® made for primary health care (clinics and hospitals dispensaries) and pharmacies respectively.

Department of Health says its mobile app, which allows it to monitor medicine stock at health facilities, is helping it to overcome the challenge of shortages.

The stock visibility system (sVs) is a mobile application that healthcare professionals use to scan medicine barcodes and enter the stock levels for aRVs, Tb medication and vaccines.

The larger app, the Rx solutions® enables pharmacies to monitor stock requested, ordered, received, and distributed; recommend future orders; track batch or lot and expiry dates; track dispensing information for prescribers, dispensers, and patients; and monitor and control the movement of stock among institutions.

“This information is in real-time and is availed at any geographic location via the web. six provinces have the sVs, covering 1 900 or 60% of our clinics. minister motsoaledi said the huge burden of disease in the country leads to drug shortages.

iF you are a south african Grade 12 learner with outstanding achievements in mathematics and physical science then Transnet is looking for you. The state-owned entity has launched a bursary recruitment drive that offers over 170 bursaries and a training programme for chartered accountants.

Transnet is investing over R7.6 billion over the next 10 years to boost skills development in the country.

Transnet’s spokesperson mboniso sigonyela said the focus is on scarce skills in engineering and accounting to strengthen Transnet’s skills base.

Transnet has set aside R7.6 billion over the next 10 years for skills development and bursaries as part of its rolling R380 billion infrastructure investment programme. about R1.2 billion of this money will be spent on bursaries.

The bursaries are for full-time study towards a bachelor of engineering or a bachelor of science in engineering at any south african university in: • civil engineering • electrical engineering (heavy current) • electronic engineering • mechanical engineering • industrial engineering and metallurgy engineering (physical).

“The bursary covers full costs, including tuition fees, accommodation and meals, a book allowance, a computer (from second year if required), and on-the-job training,” said sigonyela. last year, Transnet awarded bursaries to over 150 students and is sponsoring more than 500 students. since the launch of its bursary scheme in 1994, Transnet has funded 3 288 students.

Transnet also offers a three-year learnership programme for candidates with a Certificate in Theory of accounting (CTa) or bachelor of accounting sciences in Financial accounting [b Compt (Hons) or equivalent. Transnet’s chartered accountants training programme is accredited with the south african institute of Chartered accountants and provides practical experience and preparation for board examinations.

The programme includes extensive training in financial management, management decision-making, financial accounting, internal audit and corporate governance, auditing and assurance and taxation.

This also includes professional abilities such as interpersonal and communication, intellectual, personal, and organisational and management skills.

Bursaries entry Requirements south african Grade 12 learners with outstanding achievements in mathematics and physical science.

Chartered accountants training Programme minimum entry requirement is the Certificate in Theory of accounting (CTa) or a bCompt (Hons)/final year. Current final year CTa students are also eligible to apply. applications open and close in July each year.
