THE South African National Defence Force has heeded the call from City of Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina at Jerusalem informal settlementnear primrose on Thursday, March 2.
The Mayor at the press conference indicated that he sent an official request to the Minister of Defence asking for further assistance in the rescue operation. This is after a young boy fell into a mining sink hole, which was a shaft on Saturday afternoon (February 25). “This indeed is a tragedy and its very unfortunate that it happened. As the City of Ekurhuleni we have requested more expertise from the Department of Defence. I have personally written the letter to the Minister to expand our alternatives and assess what more we can do given the magnitude of the risk.

The Department of Mineral Resources had dispatched a team led by the Mine Rescue Services (MRS), which gave a detailed report of all possible dangers of the operation and limitations. The Mayor indicated that all avenues which are available will be exhausted

THE collapse of the roof in the foyer of Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital was a result of shoddy workmanship by contractors, says infrastructure MEC Jacob Mamabolo. Speaking to journalists on Thursday evening (March 2) after visiting the site where five people sustained minor injuries Mamabolo said the contractor, Thandzanani Trading Enterprise, would be removed from the site with immediate effect.
"We could clearly see the structure on which the contractor was working. The way
they were removing the concrete stone, we could see they did not do a proper check on the strength of the building or the roof itself. We don't think that there was a preliminary check, that's why it collapsed."
The contractor removed concrete stones and placed them on a thin roof that could not handle the weight, he said. "They removed the concrete stones and put them on a site on top of the structure. Because of the weight on concrete stones, the roof collapsed." Mamabolo said the contractor needed to
be held accountable for the manner workers approached the job. "They could have taken measures to make sure that what we are sitting with does not happen... Any reasonable contractor would take proper measures to check the structure. Already there is a case to answer." MZANSI FIRST BLACK FEMALE AUTHOR DIES President Jacob Zuma has extended his heartfelt condolences on the passing of the legendary author, literary pioneer and recipient of the Order of Ikhamanga, Ms Miriam Tlali who passed away on February 24. “We have learned with deep sadness of the passing of one of the country’s internationally celebrated black female authors, Ms Tlali, who played a critical role during the liberation struggle by telling a true South African story
through her anti-apartheid novels, amongst other writings. She will be remembered for her outstanding literary work which earned her several accolades and honours including the Order of Ikhamanga which was bestowed on her for her excellent intellectual achievements and contribution to the development of literature in South Africa. We wish to convey our deepest condolences to her family, relatives and all in the arts and culture industry. May

Accompanied by Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, Premier Makhura handed over cheques as part of bursaries sponsored by the Gauteng City Region Academy, an initiative of the provincial government.
Since 2009, the Gauteng tertiary education bursary has benefitted 12 000 learners. At the moment, 4000 learners are being supported.
These bursaries cover the costs of education, accommodation and monthly needs for the learners. In attendance at the ceremony, held at Turbine Hall in the Johannesburg CBD, were the ecstatic learners, accompanied by their parents. MEC Panyaza Lesufi said as much as they were proud to invest millions of rands on bursaries, he was saddened by learners who misused this opportunity. Education department statistics show that nearly 26% of learners that previously benefitted from this bursary had failed at university, something MEC Lesufi wants to put a stop to. “Almost 26% of bursary [beneficiaries] failed, students did not complete school,

Premier Makhura said this was the largest number of students awarded bursaries this year, noting that a sizeable majority of them hailed from township schools. “In 2017 alone we have 2 800 children getting to varsity. It’s the largest intake of bursaries … We do this because we want them to become young professionals, to help build the South African dream,” he said. The Premier told learners and their parents that while university provides more freedom, they have to make the best of the chance they have been given because passing regularly was the only way to keep being
funded by the provincial government. “I am giving you a warning, university is different. At school there was always someone who checked your work, even your parents helped. At university, you are on your own, you can use that freedom for good or to bring yourself down. We want you to pass. The government wants you to pass first year, if you don’t [the Gauteng government] will not fund your repeat year." Premier Makhura said protests should not be used as an excuse for not writing exams. “No excuses will be taken for not writing exams. The only thing we will ask you this year is ‘did you pass or not’?” He urged parents to encourage their kids to work hard at university. “Parents, we are doing a lot to help our young kids. We are investing in programmes to give them a better living. Any country not investing in the youth is heading for disaster as a nation. We are not doing them a favour… encourage them to work hard,” he said. – TLM/SANews

She also wrote, amongst others, internationally acclaimed black consciousness novel “Amandla” in 1980. Miriam Tlali was the first black woman in South Africa to publish a novel in 1975. She was also one of the first to write about Soweto.
Obituary Of MIRIAN TLALI
Miriam Tlali was born on 11 November 1933 in Doornfontein in Johannesburg, Transvaal (Gauteng). She grew up in Sophiatown. Miriam wanted to study literature at the University of the Witwatersrand but was not admitted due to the reservation of positions for White students. She later went to study at Pius the XII University (now University of Lesotho). Unfortunately she couldn’t complete her studies due to financial difficulties. No longer able to study, Tlali found a job as a bookkeeper at a furniture store. In 1969, Tlali had written and completed a novel titled Muriel at Metropolitan, a semi-autobiographical work. The novel was only published six years later in 1975. It was the first novel written by a Black woman to be published in South Africa. In 1979, the novel was banned by the Apartheid government; however, it was published internationally under the title Between Two Worlds by Longman African Classics. In 1980, Tlali published her second novel Amandla (meaning Power) which was based on the 1976 Soweto uprising. Sadly the novel was banned only weeks after it was published. Just like her first novel, Amandla was translated into several languages, including Japanese, Polish, German and Dutch. Both novels were unbanned in 1986. In 1984 she wrote a collection of short stories, interviews and non-fiction titled Mihloti (meaning tears). In 1989, Footprints in the Quag (initially titled Soweto Stories) was published by Pandora Press. As an author Tlali has travelled the world and represented South Africa in several countries. In 1978 she was invited to an international writing programme at Iowa State University in the United States of America. Between 1989 and 1990, Tlali was a visiting scholar at the Southern African Research Program at Yale University. For her contribution to the literary profession, Tlali has received many accolades, including being honoured by the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology for being the first Black woman to publish a novel. In 1995, the Department also honoured her with a Literary Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2008; she received the Presidential Award, Ikhamanga Silver. Tlali’s founded the publishing house Skotaville. As a member of the Women's National Coalition, Tlali assisted in drafting the Preamble to the South African Women's Charter. In 2013, Tlali celebrated her 80th birthday. She was reported to be writing her autobiography.

Plans are underway to reduce the housing backlog in Ekurhuleni following the announcement that government will start building 100 000 houses in the metro to benefit residents in the 119 informal settlements in the municipality. SAA and Caring4Girls deliver a little dignity!

The programme was conceptualised by Richard Mabaso in 2012 after he overhead a fearful conversation between his mom and one of his nieces about some of the taboos still associated with menstruation. He was further galvanised when he discovered that underprivileged girls miss up to 50 days of school a year due to being ill-equipped to handle their periods. Richard had just conceptualised and organised the Trek4Mandela expedition, which provided for a group of South Africans to climb Kilimanjaro with the aim of reaching the summit on Mandela Day, and he knew he could apply a lot of what he had learnt in the process to the new programme. Both the Trek4Mandela and Caring4Girls programmes have since recognised by the Nelson Mandela Foundation as innovative concepts that help “make every day a Mandela day”.

South African Airways (SAA), in association with the Imbumba Foundation’s Caring4Girls programme made life a little easier for 58 girls at the Tamaho Primary School in Katlehong on Monday, February 27. SAA has been supporting Caring4Girls, a menstrual education and sanitary towel distribution programme, since May 2016. Today the airline donated 332 packs of sanitary towels to Tamaho Primary, enough to last the 58 girls for a full term. This follows a similar donation made to the school in September last year. Speaking at the handover today, SAA’s General Manager Stakeholder and Shareholder Relations Lusanda Jiya, shared with the learners her first experience when she got her period at age 11. The learners were inspired and happy to hear that they are not alone and can relate to her experience.
In the previous handover, the school had also indicated the need for food for the learners. SAA employees saw this as a need that requires immediate attention and decided to take money out of their own pockets to donate cereal to the school and make sure that this need is also met. The cereal is prepared every morning for all the 1550 learners at the school. Caring4Girls is one of several programmes developed and implemented by the Imbumba Foundation, which receives sponsorship support from several large companies as well as from SAA. The Foundation aims to bring about social change in South Africa by investing in poor - mainly rural - communities and by empowering them to create better opportunities for themselves. The Caring4Girls programme, which reaches approximately 350,000 girls in all nine provinces at the moment, ultimately aims to reach 2 million with education about men-
struation and much-needed sanitary towels. “SAA is deeply committed to the empowerment of women and girls,” says the airline’s spokesperson, Tlali Tlali, “and we know we can only be effective if we offer support from multiple angles at the same time.”

SAA’s transformation programme places a high priority on attracting girls to careers in the airline industry and on providing worldclass training in all areas of its business. The national carrier also understands that, in order to be able to build meaningful careers, girls can’t afford to miss valuable school days because of menstrual issues. “This is why we became involved in supporting Caring4Girls,” says Tlali. “We know this is a gateway programme that is making a real difference in so many lives.” Apart from providing health education and sanitary towels, Caring4Girls aims to

authorities. Follow up on these and produce monthly reports relating to activities of the ward war room. These reports will get escalated to the local war room at municipal level, which is chaired by the Executive Mayor.
This is a provincial programme aimed at closing gaps in terms of service delivery and adopting and integrated approach to services delivery issues and as well coordinated manner of planning as low as ward level. The ward level the war room structures are already functional with elected members that serve there as the local war rooms were all launched towards the end of 2016 year. Stakeholders from different structures, mostly sector departments within the vicinity, councilors as well as municipal management led by the Acting Municipal Manager, Mr. Sailor Netshivhale were also present at this event.
