THE South African National Defence Force has heeded the call from City of Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina at Jerusalem informal settlementnear primrose on Thursday, March 2.
The Mayor at the press conference indicated that he sent an official request to the Minister of Defence asking for further assistance in the rescue operation. This is after a young boy fell into a mining sink hole, which was a shaft on Saturday afternoon (February 25). “This indeed is a tragedy and its very unfortunate that it happened. As the City of Ekurhuleni we have requested more expertise from the Department of Defence. I have personally written the letter to the Minister to expand our alternatives and assess what more we can do given the magnitude of the risk.

The Department of Mineral Resources had dispatched a team led by the Mine Rescue Services (MRS), which gave a detailed report of all possible dangers of the operation and limitations. The Mayor indicated that all avenues which are available will be exhausted
