Gauteng praises Lesedi!

Quality of Life survey reveal municipality’s positive contribution to service delivery!

“The Lesedi Local Municipality has contributed positively to the Gauteng 5th Edition City Region Observatory 2018 Quality of Life survey (GCRO).”

This is according to the Gauteng Premier David Makhura when he delivered the keynote speech at the release of the results on November 13 at the University of Johannesburg.

Premier Makhura commended Lesedi Local Municipality’s Mayor Cllr. Lerato Maloka for her efforts to ensure the municipality is stable and does well in various areas of service delivery.

in the survey. Every two years, the GCRO conducts a Quality of Life survey.

Last year, Lesedi Local Municipality introduced a programme called “Operation Thuthukisa” (isiZulu for “Improve”), which is aimed at encouraging the acceleration of service delivery response. The programme also aimed to improving the standards of services Lesedi Municipality gives to communities.

Since March 2017, the municipality has engaged in various service delivery activities like: repairing potholes and roads, maintenance of parks, improving road markings and signs etc.

“Ekurhuleni sets aside R12bn for small business”- Masina The City of Ekurhuleni has ringfenced about R12 billion for Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs), which will be doing business directly with the municipality over the next three years, says Mayor Mzwandile Masina.

“Over 2 000 of the SMMEs have been registered on our database. They are going to benefit directly from this R12 billion,” Masina said. The mayor was addressing the Second South African

Business Incubation Conference (SABIC), which was hosted by Minister of Small Business Development, Lindiwe Zulu, at Emperors Palace Conference Centre in Kempton Park on Thursday, November 15. Masina said the city will assist dozens of farms and give support services to entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector. In addition, the city has also invested about R6.2 billion per annum in infrastructure development.

“Last year, working together with the

private sector, we created about 98 000 new jobs as a result of closer working relationship which ensured that as government we created an enabling environment for business,” he said.

According to the mayor, the city’s Aerotropolis Masterplan has stimulated over R3 billion worth of investments pipeline in the city, especially in the area of freight and logistics.

The Aerotropolis programme is the city’s unique economic growth path,

aimed at repositioning the regional economy within the Gauteng City Region, which is envisaged to create new formal jobs. The Minister called on the private sector to invest in incubators to support the growth and development of the SMME sector.

Incubation programmes are aimed at improving the early-stage survival and long-term growth prospects of SMMEs, to ensure that they remain sustainable.

Ekurhuleni City manager a victim of scams!

The City of Ekurhuleni distances itself from fake emails doing the rounds regarding the ‘awarding’ of a particular tender.

It has been brought to the attention of the City that there is an email circulating purportedly from the City Manager Dr Imogen Mashazi informing some company to urgently contact an official regarding ‘Contract: A-EE 16-2018’.

The City Manager distances herself from these malicious and fake e-mails, which certainly were never generated and sent by the city manager nor do they originate from her machine. The

City views this development as a desperate attempt, by faceless people, to tarnish the image of the City Manager. This incident is viewed in a serious light and the City has launched a full scale investigation into the matter in an attempt to identify the source of the e-mail. The matter will be reported to the SAPS so that those responsible can face the full might of the law.

The City of Ekurhuleni is a municipality of systems and processes and fully subscribes to the procurement processes as outlined in the Municipal Finance Management Act.

Drug Peddler caught in Katlehong!

Early Friday morning, November 16, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) Drug Enforcement Unit members arrested a Katlehong man found in possession of the drug Khat.

The arrest was as a result of a tip-off from the concerned Katlehong community members.

Utilizing the information received the Drug Enforcement Unit members acted swiftly by raiding the given address on Mlangeni Street in Katlehong North where 6x medium size ziplocks and 52x small ziplocks of cat valued at R13,400 where uncovered. The occupant of the house, a man aged 36, was immediately arrested.

The arrested suspect was detained at Katlehong North police station on charges of possession and dealing in narcotics. He was expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court.

Congrats officers!

These two prominent members of the FCS unit (Family violence, Child protection and Sexual offences unit) got awards and medals on their respective outstanding performance recently.

Detective Sgt Manakedi Rosinah Vilakazi obtained first position for Detection Rate at the Provincial Excellent Awards, plus her second award for the best employee for FCS Unit around Katorus area.

In a separate competition, Victoria Ngobese (also from FCS unit obtain position 1 for Master Woman National SAPS Marathon Championship that was held at Middleburg in Mpumalanga on the November 10.

Supplementary exams move to June!

From 2019, supplementary exams will no longer take place in March but rather in June, says the Basic Education Department (DBE).

One of the major reasons for the change is thorough monitoring of the system.

“We have noted that on average around 40 000 learners who enrol for supplementary examinations every year do not turn up to write the examinations,” said the department.

This results in massive wasteful expenditure.The department said this new system will also give learners enough time for revision.

By having these examinations in June, there will adequate time for revision and learners can make use of the comprehensive support material provided through the Second Chance Matric Support Programme.

This will also allow learners to the opportunity to rewrite as many subjects as they want as opposed to the current two subjects allowed.

The supplementary exams are bearing fruit as seen with the increase in learners who obtained the NSC exams. In 2018, learners who wrote the supplementary exam and obtained the NSC increased from 401 435 to 411 523, an increase of 10 088 candidates.

Ladies restore dignity of girls!

On October 30, the Ladies Mantombazana group in Ratanda bought dignity back to young girls by handing some sanitary pads at Sithokomele Primary School.

The women of God have been inspired to do this initiative as part of a global group of women who create and share motivational and spiritually uplifting content.

Established in 2016, the organization has about 71 groups of women

globally. Ladies Mantombazana was started by Ms Nomthi Hoekop from Kwa-Thema in Ekurhuleni.

She wanted to see spiritual growth for women who love God all over the world.

The girls at Sithokomele Primary were happy to receive cenitary pads.

Mrs Matekane and other teachers thanked all the members of the Ladies Mantombazana group who have assisted in getting the pads.

KwaThema Depot brings services closer to Tsakwaduza community!

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Environment and Waste Management Services Cllr Ndosi Shongwe officially opened the KwaThema Parks Depot situated at the Corner of Moshoeshoe and Kgaswane Streets on Thursday, November 8.

The facility will accommodate over 50 municipal officials who reside and work in the KwaThema area whereas they currently report for duty at the Springs Depot.

The 50 officials had to travel to Springs only to report for duty and come back to KwaThema to perform their duties.

The opening of the depot in the vicinity of where their services are rendered will im-

prove the response time and frequency of environment and parks-related services to the people of KwaThema and the surrounding townships of Tsakane and Duduza (Tsakwaduza).

The R18 million facility is completely equipped with adequate facilities and dedicated vehicles for efficient provision of parks management services as well as all environmental services.

MMC Shongwe indicated that the building of the depot was yet another illustration of the effectiveness of the consultative nature of the City’s planning and budgeting processes.

“The construction of this depot came about from the requests made by the community members during the

IDP/Budget meetings.

We are here to deliver on their request.

This depot is meant to create an easy access for services as well as the community to easily walk-in to enquire on all parks and environment-related services,” Cllr Shongwe said.

Regarding employment opportunities in the depot, MMC Shongwe said not only the community of KwaThema will benefit, but also the areas of Duduza

and Tsakane will be using the facility.

“One day, we must not find the place closed by locals saying they see people living in other areas working in the depot,” she explained.

Furthermore, Cllr Shongwe urged the community to look after the newly opened depot and reminded them that it was built using the residents’ hardearned money, collected through rates and taxes.

Diabetes has been recorded as the second most common cause of natural death among South Africans by the Mortality and Causes of Death in South Africa report released by the Stats SA in March 2018.

It claimed 25 255 deaths during the period from 2014 to 2016, constituting 5.5% of all deaths (natural and nonnatural 456 612) during that period.

Local health practitioners have also observed the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes patients at the City’s healthcare facilities. The Type 2 diabetes is often associated with lifestyle choices and genetics.

As the world observed World Diabetes Day on14 November, the City urges residents, young and old, to be mindfulness of diabetes early warning signs.

Ekurhuleni’s manager for noncommunicable diseases, Mrs Angie Ndhambi, noted that the rise in diabetes, particularly Type 2 which is largely preventable, can be halted if people knew the warning signs and risk factors so they can start leading a healthier and active lifestyle.

Early diagnosis and treatment are key to prevention of complications and to achieve good health for those who are affected.

The statistics as indicated in the Mortality and Causes of Deaths, 2016 report illustrate the devastating consequences of diabetes if not treated and managed appropriately, and earlier.

Families and friends are urged to be more cognizant of the diabetes warning signs, which include: • Blurred vision • Excessive thirst • Frequent urination • Lack of energy • Numbness in the feet and/or hands • Slow healing wounds While regular exercise and keeping low sugar levels in your diet is highly recommended, communities are also advised to follow the diabetic portion plate to prevent related ailments: • Half the plate should consist of fruits and vegetables • One quarter of the plate should be ones’ choice of protein • The other quarter should be any starch.

Those who may experience any of the symptoms are encouraged to seek medical attention by visiting any of the primary healthcare facilities for a free health screening.

Graduation for Thsepong learners! Lesedi contributed positively to GCRO 2018 Quality Of Life Survey!

The Tshepong Stimulation Centre in Katlehong held a Christmas and a graduation celebration on Friday, November 9.

This event was dedicated to the learners, mostly who are children living with various disabilities.

It was a beautiful and very emotional day, especially for parents and the staff members, as they were saying farewell to some of their beloved learners.

Parents were very grateful and gave thanks to Tshepong Stimulation Centre for helping their children, some saying that their children didn’t know how to go to the toilet for themselves, some didn’t know how to feed themselves.

According to a parent, some children come to the centre when they were just toddlers, and today they can speak, pray, feed themselves and be helpful around the house. Mr Thabo Moshatane, popularly known as ‘Mr T’ is the founder of the centre and said that he is very grateful to the workers, nurses and social workers for making this day possible.

The children entertained guests and parents with their cultural dance (Indlamu), and they danced to the music and had a great time.

This day gave hope to others that lives and cares for children with special needs. The social workers, nurses and the children’s care givers explained how it is never easy dealing with children with disabilities, it requires time, patience and most importantly love.

They believe that children are not disabled but ‘unable until they are able.’

Since March 2017, the municipality has engaged in various service delivery activities like: repairing potholes and roads, maintenance of parks, improving road markings and signs etc.

The mayor and officials went on a weekly service delivery drive, where the ‘Operation Thuthukisa’ team attended to identified service delivery hotspots in various communities of Lesedi. They also held ‘warroom’ meetings to determine progress and challenges faced in respect of delivering services.

REQUEST FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST Vopak South Africa Developments (Pty) Limited (“VOPAK”), invites experienced, reputable and qualified local business in the Lesedi Municipal area to express interest in the following opportunities relating to the erection of a fuel distribution terminal in the vicinity of the Transnet Pipelines Limited (TPL) facility in Lesedi near Heidelberg. The total construction period will be approximately 10 months.

1. SITE ESTABLISHEMENT

Fencing [Reference number VTL-Fence-002]: Approximately 250 – 300 meters of 1.8 meter high standard diamond mesh fencing with a number of 8 meters, 6 meters and pedestrian gates.

Office and Facilities [Reference number VTL-STE-001]: Supply, deliver, position and rental for 10 months of the following: • 2 x 12m open plan offices; • 1 x 4m kitchen complete with sink and geyser; • 1 x 12 meter container divided into 2 offices (1 x 4m, 1 x 8m room with connecting door between 2 offices); • All 3 12m units are to be fitted with 2 air-conditioners per unit; • All containers are to have burglar proofing on windows and safety gate on all doors; • COC to be supplied for all containers including the kitchen unit; • 2 executive toilet trailers, i.e. each trailer to have 2 toilers. Toilers must be able to flush and be serviced at least once a week.

Connections [Reference number VTL-STEC-001]: Connection of 3-phase 380V power and the distribution thereof to all buildings and users within the site facilities. Disconnection, removal and restoration of the same on the conclusion of the construction period. Connection and distribution of potable water to all users within the site facility. Disconnection, removal and restoration of same on the conclusion of construction activities.

Furniture rental [Reference number VTL-FURN-001]: Supply, deliver, rental over a 10-month period and collection of the following items: • 9 x office 3-drawer desks 1200mm x 750mm • 9 high back swivel/tilt chairs (max weight 120kg) • 1 x boardroom table 5000mm x 1500mm • 12 x boardroom table chairs • 5 steel table with wooden tops 1200mm x 750mm • 5 stackable upholstered chairs Please note: Delivery, construction and other related activities are all the conducted within the TPL boundary, all interested suppliers must be cleared for access to and permitted to conduct with within the TPL areas. Activities which require physical work within the TPL boundaries will be subject to TPL and legislative health, safety and environmental control and interested parties are required to demonstrate their ability to meet such criteria.

2. CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS Structure, Mechanical and Piping [Reference number VTL-SMP-001]: Mechanical equipment and piping material will be free-issued, The successful contractor will undertake detailed design, shop design, procurement, fabrication, delivery and erecting on site of all structural steel. Installation of all mechanical equipment and the fabrication, delivery and site erecting of all piping, including the installation of free-issued in-line or instrument equipment is also within the scope of this contract. This is not a small contract and is constrained by a tight schedule. Interest parties will be required to demonstrate abnormal capabilities before they are considered for tender.

Electrical, Control and Instrumentation [Reference number VTL-ECI-001]: The supply of bulk items such as cable, cable racks and similar are included in the scope of this contract. Additionally the contractor will install, terminate and test all electrical and control/instrumentation requirements. Testing, certifying and handover of the installation in accordance with TPL and legislative requirements is included in this contract’s scope of work. This is not a small contact and is constrained by a tight schedule. Interested parties will be required to demonstrate abnormal capabilities before they are considered for tender.

School Graduations Galore!

The Shalimar Ridge Primary school recently held their annual awards ceremony to honour all the young achievers during this academic year.

This year, the school celebrates 50 years of existence (since 1968).

The Grade R, or Preprimary school was first opened in January 1989 by Mrs N. Khan.

The ceremony on November 8 at the Shalimar Ridge Town Hall also saw the official retirement of school principal Mr Yusuf Khan and his wife, Mrs Khan, who have served the school their entire lives and growing it to become the finest education institutions in Gauteng.

Daniel Palitha (Grade 7) got a total 14 awards including Dux and Academic Dux. The youngster has also been offered an oppotunity by SAFA to play Cape Town with Sporting FC. Principal Mr Khan handed Palita the school trophy as the top achiever in the school.

The Ratanda Bertha Gxowa Primary School held their Academic Awards ceremony on Friday, November 9 at the Ratanda Ext. 23 Hall. Overall achievers in all grades were awarded, including the overall achievers. Parents and the community witnessed the kids being awarded plus got some entertainment from the learners. Spellathon: Tshepo Sephula got first place award in the Sedibeng east district (Sesotho). He then proceeded to provincial level. Paballo Sebiloane got awarded for English at district level and Wendy Duma was awarded for Isizulu at District level.

Kamohelo Motshoeneng and Tshepo Sephula participated in the Mental Maths challenge.

Precious Ntsoereng was awarded for her participation at the Sedibeng District Spelling Bee.

HEATWAVE CAN MAKE YOU SICK!

It is very obvious that summer is under-way.

The weather patterns have indicated heat waves and heavy rain. But the sun’s harmful effects on people is not well known and some people are clueless in treating heat-related illnesses like dehydration and heat cramps.

Children, elderly and the obese people have a high risk of developing heat illnesses including outdoor workers.

People taking certain medications or consuming alcohol also have high risk.

Athletes in superb healthy conditions can also succumb to heat related illnesses if ignoring the early warning signs.

Here are some of recommended precautions you should take when finding yourself under extreme hot conditions: • Drink plenty of water very oft en, non-alcoholic and decaffeinated fluids, even if you don`t feel thirty. If you are on a fluids restrictive diet, consult a physician before increasing consumption of fluids.

• Rest and cool down in the shade during breaks.

• Lightweight, bright, loose fitting clothes reflects heat and sunlight away. “Prevents heat absorption”.

• Take a cool bath or shower. Use lukewarm water.

• Don`t take salt tablets unless specified by a physician.

• Spend more time in air conditioned places.

• Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated, or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day, usually early morning or in the evening.

Heat cramps may be the first sign of heat related illness and may lead to heat exhaustion or heat strokes.

S T A R T

Sign and symptoms of Heat Cramps:

• Painful muscles cramps and spasm usually in legs and abdomen.

• Heavy sweating.

First Aid: • Apply firm pressure on the cramping muscles or gently massage to relieve spasm.

• Have sips of cool water unless if feeling nauseas, then stop having water.

Signs and symptoms of Heat Exhaustion:

• Heavy sweating.

• Weakness • Dizziness • Nauseas & Vomiting.

• Fainting.

•Cool, Pale and Clammy skin.

• Fast & Weak pulse (Heart beat).

First Aid: • Move person to a cooler environment.

• Apply cool, wet clothes to as much of the body as possible.

• Lay the person down and loosen tight clothes.

• Offer sips of water if patient still conscious.

• Seek medical attention immediately.

Signs and symptoms of Heat Stroke:

• Altered mental state.

• Headache, confusion, nausea, dizziness, shallow breathing.

• Hot, red, dry or moist skin.

• Rapid and strong Pulse (Heart beat).

• Faints, loses consciousness.

First Aid: • Get the victim immediately to the medical facility/ hospital.

• Move the victim to a cooler, preferably air- conditioned environment.

• Reduce body temperature with cool clothes or bath.

• Don`t give fluids.

The South African Weather Service has predicted a scorching heatwave in Gauteng. The extreme heat will also affect parts of Limpopo, the North West, Free State, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape, where maximum temperatures soared to the upper 30s and lower 40s.

Exposing kids to the world of cricket!

The Mini-Cricket was launched in South Africa during the 198283 cricket season to encourage the growth and development of cricket amongst boys under 9 and girls up until 13 years of age.

Mini-Cricket gives all young children the opportunity of being exposed to the game of cricket.

To date, the programme has seen 2,5 million kids participating in the KFC Mini-Cricket programme and continues to be a driving force for strong national teams.

KFC’s sponsorship aims to reach more children with over 120 000 kids playing Mini-Cricket throughout the year in over 6400 schools and coached by almost 12 000 volunteer coaches.

Through the KFC Mini-Cricket programme, KFC has managed to offer kids with the critical building blocks to learn cricketing basics and entrenching important life lessons.

The programme allows teachers at schools to offer a cricket sporting programme, even with basic fields and facilities. This is to make sure that kids are playing their way, getting active and that the educational lessons of commitment to participation are learnt and adopted way beyond just the game.

O.R Tambo/Soncini Games Champions crowned!

The016 Sports Leisure will host the Festive Soccer Tournament on 18 December. Teams are invited to register at R2000 affiliation fee for First teams (open age) and R1200 for Under-15. The 2nd edition of the annual OR Tambo Soncini Games in Germiston Ekurhuleni came to a grandiose closing with Gauteng’s young talent scooping awards in the various sporting activities.

It was a good day out in the playing fields for athletes, parents and the Community of Ekurhuleni who came out in their numbers to support the games.

Hundreds of young people descended upon Germiston in Ekurhuleni to for two days (27-28 October), to compete in Swimming, athletics, basketball, netball, rugby and soccer.

Team Gauteng School Sport made up of the best talent from schools across the province were the big winners with 44 medals.

They were followed by Tshwane with 39, City of Johannesburg with 37, Ekurhuleni with 31; Sedibeng with 23 and lastly Westrand with 15.

Thevisiting team from Reggio Emillio in Italy did not compete for medals.

nized by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni and the Gauteng Sport Confederation were held as part of celebrating and honouring our liberation icon OR Tambo, a true hero of the nation who helped shape South Africa’s constitutional democracy.

According to the department, hosting this event also gives an opportunity to young people to express and engage in the historical developments in South Africa.
