On August 16, the Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) welcomed the guilty judgement on the “Springs Monster couple” saying it was a welcome deterrent to the violent abuse of innocent and vulnerable children. The North Gauteng High Court found the couple from Springs in Ekurhuleni guilty on all charges including rape, attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, obstruction of justice and five counts of child abuse and five counts of child neglect. The man was found guilty of abusing their five children, raping their older daughter, who was 16-years-old at the time, attempted murder of the 11-year-old son, and dealing in drugs.

The wife faced 20 charges and was found guilty of five counts of child neglect, defeating the ends of justice and obstruction of justice and being in possession of drugs. The department expressed relief at the justice for the children who endured horrific acts of injustice from the very people who were meant to protect them. It has called for a harsher sentence to serve as a deterrent. Gauteng Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza reacted with joy at the guilty verdict. “The Department, as the custodians of children in the province as per the Children’s Act 38 of 2005, remains concerned about the alarming rate of abuse of children in the province. Gauteng is a child friendly province

and we will not tolerate any kind of abuse of its children. We are steadfast on our zero-tolerance to anyone who abuse children in this horrendous manner. The MEC said they are satisafied that this judgement now paves the way for these children to put their ugly past behind them, and focus on building a better future for themselves. She said the GDSD Springs Office in partnership with the Springs Child Welfare have ensured that they are placed in foster care and will continue to support them to rebuild their shattered lives. The Springs Monster will remain in custody pending sentencing, and his wife’s bail has been extended.

Beware of fake vendors on the Internet!

Police hereby urge readers to be warned about the trends of internt fraud happening around Heidelberg and other areas in Gauteng. “It was detected that several unsuspecting customers or buyers are conned of their hard earned cash by fake sellers/vendors through Internet,” says Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate the Corporate Communication officer at Heidelberg SAPS. According to police, the suspects placed an advertisement for an item or car in the Internet with a bargain price. After

you contact them tonenquire about the item or car placed for sale, they persuaded the unsuspecting client or customer to pay the money via Money Market and to be quick because there are many customers earmarked to buy the item or car. Suspects will then give you an address where to collect your item after paying or depositing the money. Once deposit the money, gave them reference and PIN numbers, their phones are no longer active. No item or car will be delivered.

“Community members are urged to be vigilant not to deposit money before they met with a Seller and see the item or car physically. This should be limit customers or buyers to be conned of their hard earned cash. The community is also advised, sensitized and warned to avoid purchasing items without verification or saw the item,” said Captain Tshilate. The community is also warned to phone local Police Stations to verify the address mentioned if it exits or not. "Together we can make a difference"

Lesedi engage local Mehato e nkiloeng ho business communities! lokisa leano la sekepe sa Municpality shares plans to revitalize township economy!

The Lesedi Local Municipality hosted an engagement meeting with local business community across various areas. One of the sessions was held in Ratanda, where officials discussed issues facing the local businesspeople. “The purpose of these engagements is to assess the needs of local businesses, the relevant interventions thereof to employ in assisting with the development of business sectors within our locals,” said the municipality in a statement. During the sessions, Lesedi confirms that it is embarking on a serious township revitalization programme in the communities. They also hinted the intention to erect new business stalls in areas like Shalimar Ridge, that will give local vendors capacity for growing their trades. The local business owners requested that the procurement procedure be re-looked into because there are companies that have been applying for years, but not responded to while there are companies that have been benefiting for years. Also, the appointed Community Liason Officers (CLOs) appointed in projects around the areas must get training on their occupation. Acting municipal manager of Lesedi Local Municipality, Gugu Thimane expressed her passion to see local enterprises thrive and has assured support from her office. “As our plan of action we need to list all the SMME of this area, and expose them to opportunities while taking them through the procurement processes where neces-

sary,” she said. During the engagements, Lesedi MMCs (Members of Municipal Council) respond to the issues raised by the local business people. Some of the issues raised are: tenders allocated to the same company every year, contractor invoices not paid in time, land released to foreign nationals, rejection of applicants on the supply chain processes, expired business licenses and tariff increases without notice. Responding to issues, Local Economic Development and Planning/Housing MMC Linda Motsepe said Lesedi municipality has recently signed with the Gauteng Provincial Government a rapid land release form, so the land be redistributed and allocated to the rightful business practitioners that comply to the policy placed. “I ask all experienced contractors to take in the inexperienced under their wing to help develop small businesses,” said Motsepe. On the issue of tariffs, before any increase are made, the municipality advertised on the proposed tariffs on the municipality website, including placing a notice on Mapepeza Newspaper (June 8 on Issue #23). “We need to put together mechanism tools to give sustainable growth to business people in our area,” said the MMC. Apart from Ratanda, the Lesedi Municipality’s Thuthukisa Township Economy Enterprise Engagement and Development Sessions were held in Jameson Park, Devon and Vischkuil.

Scientists inspire local girls to pursue their careers!

The City of Ekurhuleni is utilizing the partnerships with other government departments and the private sector to break barriers that prevent young girls to enter maledominated work careers. As part of the initiative, the City hosted a symposium in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) and the private sector on between 13 and 14 August to enlighten young school girls that they can crack it in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics career fields at the Alberton West Gallery Hall. Women who are professionals and owns companies in these fields were invited to encourage the 150 high school girls in attendance. Some of the inspirational women who spoke to the young girls were Former Minister of Home Affairs, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize who is a founder of the Nolwazi Foundation for Girls and a director of Women in Mobility IT Solutions

and Training, and Ms Fikiswa Majola from Microsoft. Ms Majola is also a Chairperson of the Youth Empowerment in South Africa for the international nonprofit organization, Duke of Edinburg. One of the guest speakers at the event, Ms Lindiwe Dladla kaMkhonza, a Director of Chiefkazi Investment Port, ran a competition for the young girls to win a trip to accompany her to the United States of America for the sitting of the United Nation Commission on the status of Women in March 2019. Zaheeia Adam from Willowmore High School won the trip. Zaheeia said attending the symposium and having had an opportunity to listen to other women who have made it against odds was a motivation in itself, but getting the opportunity to sit with other imminent women at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women was mind blowing.

‘Please Call Me’ movement donates wheelchair! The Katlehong-based ‘#PleaseCallMe’ movement recently showed that they are not a protest group, but a socially conscious for their community. “I was asked by Lerato Tsotsotso to donate a wheelchair for her, as the one she was using was damaged and she couldn't use it to go to church or anywhere for that matter,” said the movement’s convenor and chairperson, Modise Setoaba. According to Modise, this is an initiative that goes together with the #Pleasecallme Movement’s principles of bringing solutions to address community issues, benefiting all who live in it. “We also believe that Lerato’s living condition has to change to accommodate her as a person living with a disability. We shall however do that on the next phase of the project,” he explained. The movement then went to visit comedian and media personality, Skhumba Hlophe, and he donated a wheelchair towards his initiative. Skhumba runs his own foundation, where he gives back to township communities regularly. “While we believe that charity begins at home, there are people out there who are also doing their best to help the community and Skhumba is one of them,” explains Setoaba. Modise said the #Pleasecallme Movement is not politi-

cal by nature. Their sole mandate is to fight a black person's cause anywhere and anyhow that we can. The #PleaseCallMe movement marched to the Constitutional Court and Johannesburg Stock Exchange on August 10, submitting their memorandum of urging Vodacom to compensate Nkosana Makhate (the inventor of the popular ‘Please Call Me’ concept).

MEC & Mayor condemn usage of their names in a money-making event!

Government has lashed out at a poster circulating on social media about an event allegedly organized for entrepreneurs using the name of the City Mayor, Mwandile Masina as a sponsor. The organizers on the poster allege some partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni and “calls on suppliers and entrepreneurs” to partake in the event at a fee. The executive has condemned this in the strongest possible terms and an investigation is underway to trace the organizers and if there is any official in Ekurhuleni which has consented to the usage of the City’s brand. “The City is fully committed to transparency on any information related to business and procurement. Such information is free and available to the public. Ekurhuleni has embarked on programmes and roadshows such as Ntirhisano, partnering with SEDA and the Gauteng Provincial Government, to raise awareness about opportunities in the City. All these activities are done at no cost to the public,” explained the City in a media statement released on August 15. Meanwhile, the Office of Gauteng's MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Lebogang Maile, notes the fake event and has no knowledge nor has it sanctioned this event, hence MEC Maile will not be in attendance. “We call on the public, especially emerging and established entrepreneurs to treat this event as a cash cow scam by its dubious organisers,” said the MEC’s office in a statement. The MEC’s office went further to say that they view the actions of the organisers of this event as part of a well-orchestrated and deliberate agenda to tarnish Maile's public image and reputation. “MEC Maile, as a public representative, has an electoral mandate and responsibility as a leader of the governing ANC to address various audiences without anyone being expected to pay for attendance. The Black Suppliers Road Show is a fake event intended to raise false hopes, amidst the bottlenecks faced by Black and African entrepreneurs,” explains the statement condemning the event organizers.

“Dipaleseng LEDF structure is not legit!” Business owners from Siyathemba and surrounding areas in the Dipaleseng Local Municipality claim that the members of the Dipaleseng Local Economic Development Forum (LEDF) are not legitimate businesspeople. Also, the executive members unveiled last month were not elected properly. The Dipaleseng LEDF structure was officially re-launched on the July 24 in a meeting at Siyathemba Community Hall. Members of the dissatisfied local business community say that there has been multiple cases of interference by politicians on some projects in the area. After the LEDF was relaunched, the business people got together to express their frustrations by protesting at the Dipaleseng offices. It later escalated to the Gert Sibande District Municipality, where their memorandum of grievances were submitted. In the memo, the Balfour businesspeople express their concerns regarding the new LEDF structure. Some of their concerns include the actions of Zakhele Maya, the SMME subcommittee member led a sinister campaign to get community members to vote at the LEDF elections. “We as the business owners of Dipaleseng feel that corruption has played a major role in the elections and, secondly, our local communities are not totally involved nor informed of this meeting,” said the memorandum. The Mpumalanga-based municipality said that the reelection came as a result of challenges that the government faced when the ignored business owners started disrupt-

ing municipal services, the Departments and some local business activities. During the elections, The Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mafunda Makhubu congratulated the newly elected executive and pleaded for cooperation and unity in efforts in order to build and grow the local economy. But it seems that the fight is far from over as the local business owners do not approve. According to both the municipality and local business owners, the situation had been on-going for a few months and had reached uncomfortable levels when protests were made by the disgruntled group. “Drastic measures such as the disbandment of the Local Economic Development Forum (LEDF) structure that was in place which was accused of demonstrating monopolistic attributes and not being pro-Dipaleseng by the disgruntled group were taken. An interim committee was then elected to oversee LEDF objectives until the structure is re-launched. Unfortunately, these efforts did not seem to have been adequate in yielding any positive outcome as these unfavourable acts perpetuated,” confirms Dipaleseng. The Dipaleseng business owners suggested that the interim executive structure that was operational before the re-elections must continue and the new LEDF be put on hold. In the memorandum, they claim to have in their possession the evidence of corruption in projects in the municipality and in surrounding areas.

"WOMAN, YOU ARE THE STAR"

START

MAZECRAZE

Woman! You are like a tree, a tree that is never shaken, A tree that is forever green and glowing. You are a shelter, a shelter that never rains in, a shelter that protect and provide. Woman! Your encouragement, your unselfishness has made the whole family and community as large the better country. I wish you can look in a mirrow and see yourself through my eyes. I now know that, Angels lives amongst us, that everyday we see them and we never notice them. Because we expect them to be different from us, the biggest question is, but are they? Woman you're like a star, a star that is never looses it's glow. A star that is never stop shining. A star that is never flow down. Woman you are a light, a light that guides forever lost souls. It doesn't matter how deep in the shadow of darkness, the family may be. Your light guides man and children, your light shows us brighten. • Your guidence, • Your wisdom, • Your teachings, • Your patience, • Your pains, are a way of life. Being a woman is hard in our society these days. Women all over the world are brutally abused, publicly humiliated and stripped off their womanhood by those they look up to for protection. Woman, please know that you are so special, that's why even God himself the creater of heaven and earth, has noticed your importance. If you were not important, God wouldn't created Eva in the first place. I like Zulu word when it says: Umama ubamba umese lapho ub'khali ngakhona. This country wouldn't be so lovely like this if it wasn't you heroes. Wathinta abafazi-Wathinta imbokodo Women are the best pillars of our country. So let's respect them and love them. They deserve all love & to be taken care.
