By Thabiso Mqocwa Lesedi Local Municipality commemorated the International Day For Disaster Reduction Friday, November 17 at the Ratanda Drop-in Centre in partnership with Ratanda SAPS, Sedibeng District Municipality and Santam Insurance.

The theme, “Home Safe Home” was made to encourage people to put safety first in their homes at all times, by taking preventative measures against natural and caused disasters.

Our Constitution makes laws for government to ensure people live in a safer environment not harmful to their health or wellbeing.

Children and senior citizens are most vulnerable when it comes to experiencing fires, especially those living in informal settlements.

The senior citizens and children’s home managers were taught how to install fire and smoke alarms, plus a quick course on how to offer first aid to injured people.

Two senior citizens from Ratanda demonstrate alongside EMS personnel how to use first aid in assisting injured people. This was part of the awareness campaign honouring the International Day for Disaster Recovery.

International Day for Disaster Reduction honoured!

The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation at the SAPS warned the elders not to give their SASSA and ID books to anyone. Affected people are requested to report to police immediately.

The event purpose was about to raise awareness around risk reduction in our old age homes and children’s homes.

A demonstration on the effectiveness of the smoke alarms and fire alarms that are installed to our homes.

President Jacob Zuma has appointed General Khehla John Sitole as the new SAPS National Commissioner, the Presidency said on Wednesday.

Sithole will replace the acting commissioner Lesetja Mothiba with immediate effect. Mothiba was acting after Khomotso Phahlane was suspended in June to allow the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to conclude its fraud and corruption investigation.

The police were without a permanent National Commissioner since Riah Phiyega was suspended in October 2015.

Born in Standerton in Mpumalanga province, General Sitole, who was Protection and Security Services Divisional Commissioner before his appointment, brings a wealth of operational as well as management experience to the South African Police Service.

He is a career officer, having joined the police in 1986

Spend wisely this Black Friday! - NCR Arguably the biggest shopping phenomenon of the year, the National Credit Regulator (NCR) is urging the public to spend their money wisely this Black Friday, November 24.

“While millions of shoppers count down the hours until the much awaited Black Friday sale tomorrow, the NCR advises consumers to avoid getting caught by sales gimmicks and approach Black Friday offers with a level head,” said the regulator.

Manager of Education and Communication at the NCR, Mpho Ramapala, urged South Africans not to fall into the trap of impulse buying and to avoid being tempted by the flood of advertisements in the media.

Black Friday, which originates in the United States, is an informal name for the day following Thanksgiving Day, which has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, has in recent years started gaining traction in South Africa.

In addition the NCR -- which is responsible for the regulation of the South African credit industry -- said a sale does not necessarily mean that consumers must shop until they drop.

It urged the public to never fund their Black Friday or festive shopping spree by taking unnecessary loans/credit and getting into debt.

Ramapala also shared some advice on surviving Black Friday and spending wisely during the festive season. These are: • If it is on sale and you buy it on credit, remember that interest and fees will push up the price. Therefore, cash is king for sale items.

• Don’t spend what you don’t have – this means do not live beyond your means and don’t buy if you haven’t budgeted;

“With the festive season just around the corner, Black Friday may just trigger an overspending binge that could set you back financially in the new year if you are not cautious. Before you break the bank this Black Friday, please ensure that you have prioritised your necessities for the month(s) ahead like your bond/rent, transport etc.,” said Ramapala on Thursday.

The 93-year-old Mugabe tendered his letter of resignation to the Zimbabwean Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudendahe, on Tuesday (November 21) after 37 years as the Head of State.

In the letter, President Mugabe said that he decided to step down to allow for the smooth transition of power in the country.

On Sunday, Zimbabwe’s ruling party announced that President Mugabe had been removed from his position as President and first secretary of the ZANU PF by a unanimous vote at a Central Committee Special Session in Harare. The party said he had been given until midday on Monday to resign from his position as Head of State.

continuing to play a leading role in the affairs of the African continent, as a democratic and prosperous state meeting the aspirations of its people.

The chairperson of the AU commission pledged its full support to the Zimbabwean people and leaders in the period ahead.

It makes sense that the term “Black Friday” might refer to the single day of the year when retail companies finally go “into the black” (i.e. make a profit).

The day after Thanksgiving is, of course, when crowds of turkeystuffed shoppers descend on stores all over the country to take advantage of the season’s biggest holiday bargains. But the real story behind Black Friday is a bit more compli- ing shopping-related Black Friday tradition links it to retailers.

The Scholar Patroller was respectfully referred to as “Mkhulu,” I assumed due to his age.

What is most disturbing is that the female School Principal of AB Xuma Primary learnt as early as February that a Scholar Patroller at her school was allegedly sexually assaulting her young pupils and allegedly told the children not to tell their parents because she was “still investigating” the matter.

These times more than ever requires intervention of lighting speed when sexual abuse is being reported, more so it involved children.

One will expect prompt reaction to these allegations as opposed to her reaction, one child abuse is just one too many.We thank God for the speedy reaction from authorities as soon as the case was brought to their attention.

If the matter was reported much earlier most of these pupils would have been saved.

According to our late Tata Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela, our freedom is also incomplete as long as we are denied our security by criminals who prey on our communities, who rob our businesses and undermine our economy, who ply their destructive trade in drugs in our schools, and who do violence against our women and children.

The value of expectation!

he story of the woman with the issue of blood is profound and very powerful, this woman was suffering from haemorrhage (excessive loss of blood) she moved from one doctor to the other in pursue of getting a cure for her disease, nevertheless she couldn’t get help.

Upon hearing that Jesus was passing she instantly prepared her heart, she set her mind into an expectation mode, it is said that preparation and opportunity equals success. When she approached Jesus her attitude was different from the rest, she was so certain of her break through, she was so sure that it was her season, even though Jesus was out of her reach she said to herself “if I could just touch his garment I will be healed”.

Notice that Jesus was surrounded by multitudes yet he felt the touch of this woman, for this woman touched the garment with an expecting heart.

Delayed dreams, failed projects, unsuccessful relationships and unanswered prayers have led many astray, as a result others have lost hope and faith in God for the reason that they prayed yet they failed.

Nevertheless through all the failures and hardship of life I want us to take courage and learn from this woman who suffered in the hands of many doctors for more than 10 years without finding a cure for her disease, yet she never stopped hoping that her story will change one day, she did that by keeping the right attitude and maintaining her faith in God. Let’s all return to God, keeping the right attitude and praying with an expecting hearts, we will surely in the right season reap what we sow and see the value of expectation.

Event ‘restores’ hope in Fight Against Cancer! Ratanda Youth Protest Against Drugs!

By Dimpho Mohlomi, Photos: Thabiso Mqocwa The Flowering Hope Cancer Awareness event organised by photographer Wendy Tshabalala and founder of Sarah’s Heart Foundation, Cikizwa Mdidimba on Saturday (November 18) at Woza Africa Centre in Ratanda.

The event was made to raise awareness about all kinds of cancer and raising funds for those who need help in funding they’re treatment.

During the event the guest took time to participate in activities like signing and ‘kissing cancer away’ on a canvas. This poster shows the immense amount of support There were motivational speakers to motivate people to not lose hope; survivors informed and educated people on cancer.

A candle-light ceremony was made to respect the fallen victims of cancer, an emotional mo-

ment for many who attended.

Photo-booth sessions were the most anticipated part of the Flowering Hope Cancer Awareness event.

People were posing and enjoying themselves behind the camera, with their pictures accessible on social media and for sale on print.

Both men and women posed semi-nude to promote the event and cancer awareness month.

This is the second time Wendy Tshabalala, founder of photography company Twin24 has done this photo-shoot.

This year’s edition got a lot more bigger with her partnership with Cikizwa Mdidimba, hosting an event attracting many stakeholders from the area.

Performances from Mandla ‘His Child’ Zwane, Fezile Mnisi (Fezz) and local Djs got everybody moving and having fun.

The Ratanda Youth Crime Prevention Desk in association with Heidelberg SANCA, Explosion Ministries, SAMAGE and Sister-2-Sister held a march on the Thursday, November 17.

This public demonstration was meant to raise awareness of drug abuse amongst young people in the Ratanda community. Some of the high schools in the area joined in to spread the message.

During the march, the group identified the hotspots where children gather to use the drugs.

Students are mostly affected by the

environment where drugs are consumed.

Peer pressure and emotional issues drive someone to seek alcohol and drugs as a solution to their problems.

A record number of school drop-outs across the country (and the world) are due to young people abusing drugs.

The local NGOs have made their services available to anyone looking for help. Heidelberg SANCA, SAMAGE, Sister2Sister or at the Explosion Ministres have committed themselves to assisting people who are going to help someone deal with the addiction.

Indigenous Games Tournament in Sebokeng!

The tournament is to aimed at promoting indigenous games and recruiting new players across the province.

Sedibeng has previously managed to produce competent players across the various codes.

These include stick fighting, diketo, kgati, ncuva, driestokkies and many others.

These are important in contributing to the physical, social, emotional and economic wellbeing of society.

November 26 will mark the launch of the SA Open Legacy Project at the Glendower Golf Club in Edenvale.

After six years of hosting the international golf championship, the City of Ekurhuleni and the tournament’s organizer, Sun-

shine Tour agreed to focus on golf clinics for kids as a sustainable programme to benefit disadvantaged kids who are showing interest in the sport.

About 30 kids between ages eight and ten will go on trials at Glendower Golf Club on Sunday, November 26. Of the 30 young ones, only ten kids will be selected to be part of the development programme at Glendower Golf Club from January 2018.

EKURHULENI, COOL DADS FOUNDATION TO HOST THE FAMILY FIESTA FUN RUN!

The City of Ekurhuleni in partnership with the Cool Dads Foundation will on Sunday, November 26 host a Family Fiesta Fun Run.

The five and 10 KM fun walk/run will take place in Germiston Lake Park. Scores of family members are expected to participate and subsequently enjoy picnicking on the lawns of the lake.

According to Ekurhuleni Spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the fun run takes place in the context of the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children and

seeks to create awareness of the city’s stance on the abuse of women and children.

“We want to deepen the values of family and rally our men to be responsible and caring family leaders,” he said.

The Family Fiesta Fun Run therefore seeks to raise funds to the value of R500 000 from admission fees for the benefit of the Big Brother Mentorship Programme spearheaded by the Cool Dads Foundation CEO Bongani Luvalo.

Together with Cool Dads Foundation, the

city promotes stable families and grooming of young boys into better men.
