Tito Mboweni Calls on Zim to Introduce New Currency South Africa’s finance minister Tito Mboweni said on Wednesday that Zimbabwe should look at introducing a new currency to solve its economic and financial challenges. Mboweni also called for presidents to intervene in ending sanctions in Zimbabwe. Mboweni said South African government representatives, including National Treasury directorgeneral and the Reserve Bank governor, had met with their Zimbabwean counterparts on December 26 in Johannesburg. He said they had a conversation about the status of the Zimbabwean economy, the finance and banking systems, the attempts to reignite the economic health of Zimbabwe, adding that they reaffirmed their mutual commitment to working together to assist Zimbabwe. Justice Minister Denies Parole for Chris Hani Killer Justice and Correctional Services Minister Advocate Michael Masutha has once again denied the parole application of Janusz Walus, who is currently serving a life sentence for the 1993 murder of Chris Hani. Masutha has recommended that

Waluz undergo further psychotherapy. This is after reports that Waluzs has contemplated suicide. Masutha says further consideration needs to be given before deciding to grant parole. His accomplice, Clive Derby-Lewis, died of cancer two years ago about a year after he was released from prison. Ban Cellphone use by staff at Home Affairs Offices - Parliament Monday, 14 January 2019 – The Chairperson of Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, Mr Hlomani Chauke, has urged the Department of Home Affairs to consider an outright ban on cell phone usage by front line staff during working hours at all Home Affairs offices. This is because of the numerous complaints the committee has received from the public about delays at Home Affairs offices. “It is unacceptable that the public spend excessive amounts of time at Home Affairs offices, while officials spend a disproportionate amount of time busy with their cell phones. Officials are primarily employed to offer a service and the complaints point to dereliction of duty by some officials, yet they continue to draw a salary at the end of the month,” Mr Chauke said.

Residents warned of Title Deeds scammers in Ekurhuleni The City of Ekurhuleni warns its residents not to fall for the Tittle Deeds scam that has emerged in the region. About eight cases have been reported since November 2018. The cases are currently being investigated by the City’s internal investigators, and have also been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS). Scammers are targeting desperate people who need land and/or title deeds. In one incident, a victim was made to pay about R80 000 in a purported sale of a land belonging to the City. A fake title deed was issued to the victim. The scammers are also targeting residents who are waiting for title deeds to

their houses by charging them about R1 600 to issue, unbeknown to the victims, fake title deeds. Residents are warned that title deeds for low-cost housing and other government-provided houses are not for sale, and are issued and handed over free of charge. Residents who have fallen victim to this scam or others that are accompanied by claims of involvement of the City of Ekurhuleni are urged to report these to the police or to the City through its Anti-Fraud Hotline 080 010 2201. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is concerned by the case of a man advertising the sale of SASSA cards on Facebook. SASSA and the South African Post Office are currently working with the police to get to the bottom of this matter and are following leads that should result in the arrest the of what seems to be the mastermind behind this scam. The stolen cards are sold for different amounts of money by the scammers. “These stolen cards were immediately deactivated and are worthless so the public is warned not to be tempted to try and buy them as they are useless” SASSA Acting CEO, Abraham Mahlangu said. He added that "no grants can be drawn from the stolen cards and anyone buying them stands to lose out and if caught may be charged with possession of stolen property. Beneficiaries are reminded that SASSA services are free and not for sale.

They are also advised to refrain from sending their ID numbers, PINS and SASSA card numbers to strangers as these are part of the scams to defraud them. Selling of SASSA cards is illegal and criminal! Beneficiaries are urged to report such incidents to the police or alert SASSA. SASSA officials will never ask for money to issue a SASSA card. Beneficiaries are reminded to keep their PINs secret and not to disclose their card and ID numbers at all. Beneficiaries of social grants need to be extra vigilant as there are many fraudsters who will target the innocent and vulnerable. Beneficiaries should call SASSA on 0800601011 whenever they are offered any service relating to social grants for money no matter how little the charge could be. SASSA is not involved in any other business except the payment of social grants.

A man accused of several robberies and assault in Windmill Park was on Tuesday afternoon, January 8, rounded up by the community of Windmill Park and severely assaulted and a tyre place around his neck apparently with the intent of necklacing him. The incident happened near the intersection of Rondebult and Injankomo Streets in Windmill Park. Fortunately, an SAPS vehicle en route to Westbury stopped to investigate and a short period later the EMPD Public Order Policing Task Team members who had also arrived on the scene requested back up as the community members were irate. The community members were persuaded to stop the mob justice and the man was rescued and an ambulance summoned to attend to his injuries. Two women among the crowd came forward alleging that the suspect was responsible for robbing one of them of their handbag, a Hisense cellphone and R250 in cash. Only the handbag and the cellphone were recovered by the police. The other

woman claimed that she witnessed both the robbery and the assault. The 18 year old suspect who already had a tyre around his neck was rescued from the mob and an ambulance transported him to Thelle Mogoerane Hospital in Vosloorus for medical attention. After receiving medical attention the suspect was detained at Dawn Park police station.

Gauteng on high alert following Foot and Mouth outbreak in Limpopo!

The Gauteng Government has issued a warning to livestock farmers to take extra care in implementing measures to prevent any introduction of livestock (cattle, small ruminants and pigs) of unknown origin and disease status into their herds. This follows the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease in the Vhembe and Capricorn districts in Limpopo. Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Lebogang Maile is appealing to residents of Gauteng returning from the holidays - particularly those who were visiting Vhembe, Mopani, Capricorn and surrounding areas - to avoid bringing back any live clovenhoofed animals and/or any of their products. “Foot-and-mouth disease is a serious disease that spreads easily. It is caused by a virus. The virus is found in all body fluids such as saliva, urine, animal faeces, milk and in the air that is breathed out by all diseased animals,” said MEC Maile. “Although there have been no signs of the outbreak in Gauteng, we have asked

our farmers to activate their bio-security protocols in order to ensure that preventative measures are in place.” Given the seriousness of the outbreak we urge farmers to be vigilant and observe the following signs, which may be signs of the outbreak: • Blisters and sores in the mouth (gums, lips and tongue) of their livestock, are raw and painful, making it difficult for the animal to eat and often causes drooling. • Blisters and sores between the toes and where the hooves join the skin, can cause the animals to limp and not want to walk around. The immediate area around the Onderstepoort FMD laboratory is still visited by a veterinary official under supervision of a State Veterinarian on a weekly basis. All cloven-hoofed animals in the area are inspected for signs of Foot and Mouth Disease. Humans can also spread the virus through unclean clothing, shoes, hands and car tyres. MEC Maile is urging residents to report any suspect case to the nearest State veterinarian.

16 Tablets, 3 Laptops Stolen From Menzi Primary School Recovered!

A police investigation has led to the recovery of 16 tablets and three laptops believed to have been stolen from newly opened Menzi Primary School in Ekurhuleni in the early hours of Tuesday, January 15. According to Gauteng department of education spokesperson Steve Mabona, the items were found at a store on the corner of Mooi and Helen Joseph streets in Johannesburg. The state-of-the-art primary school was robbed just a week after education MEC Panyaza Lesufi opened the facility and asked Tsakane residents to look after it. Items stolen included 185 tablets, eight laptops, two projectors and three desktop computers. A plasma TV and R500 in petty cash were also taken. Lesufi said the department received a call informing it that devices believed to have been stolen from the school were being sold at the shop. “We rushed to the scene, and some of the devices indeed resembled our devices. But we have put our IT team to assist the police with the relevant information,” Lesufi said. He said the shop was still a crime scene and police were concluding investigations there. The African National Congress

(ANC) Gauteng Province condemned in the strongest possible terms the callous acts of cowardice by criminals who robbed the newly opened state-ofthe-art Menzi Primary. By robbing the school, the thugs have clearly declared war against society as a whole. “We cannot allow a situation where our children’s right to access quality education is undermined by criminals. We call upon every member of the community especially in Tsakane and the neighbouring communities, to assist the law enforcement agencies with information that can lead to the apprehension of those that committed this crime,” said the party in a statement. Menzi Primary School is one of the new generation of schools that the ANC-led government in Gauteng has been opening every month, with the aim of ensuring that our children have access to the best possible facilities. These schools are charting a new path in education, which is critical in redressing the apartheid legacy that bequeathed substandard education and learning facilities to black children. “We call upon law enforcement agencies to spare no effort in ensuring that perpetrators of this crime are speedily brought to book,” said Tasneem Motara (ANC Gauteng spokesperson).

Bootcamp for local teenagers! Motsha Teens, an NPO based in Ratanda which specializes in teenager’s development, kick started their year on a very high and positive note. The first weekend of January they hosted a 3 days teen development bootcamp. The theme for the camp was on self-discovery and on planning. Motsha introduced self-discovery as lesson because young people need to start understanding that without it, they will never have a full understanding of themselves and what they want in life. Self-discovery also plays an important role in how one identifies themselves within their frame of reference. And this will eventually assist young people not to conform to be so strong to voice out own interest, likes and dislikes and fears without holding back. This is one of the goals Motsha is trying to achieve to have a generation of teens that is independent and responsible in their thinking and actions. With the activity of planning all teens were given a task to do a review of the past year, to emphasize that when planning ahead you need to have a full understanding of were you come from to plan better for the year ahead. The reason this activity was done is because planning is a good habit, it also makes you more confident when you know all your success and failures. With failures you can learn from all your mistakes, re-strategize and start again. Understanding failure will eventually assist

to reduce the suicide, stress and depression amongst teenagers. When teenagers understand that failure is not final, they will always have the courage to start again with proper planning, commitment and consultation (mentoring) or even by simply making changes. One of the speakers also encouraged teenagers to let go of their anger, bitterness and unrealistic expectations. Motsha is working on breeding a generation of teenagers who are not scared to be themselves regardless of what society says. A generation that is not scared of hard work and not inspired by quick success. Motsha is available for one on one coaching, group coaching, motivational speaking, career guidance, term to term planning, school track, learning tools, study planner, time management and mind maps. The next bootcamp will be during Winter holidays. Other upcoming activities include, Men who lead Men conversations and The Girl Talk, Mental Health and Social ills campaign. Brothers in business making their name in Duduza!

Bongani Ngwani (40), and Thulani Motloung (29), joined forces in April last year to start their own upholstery-business to service the community of Duduza, and surrounding areas. As most young people wake up to submit CVs to companies for employment, the two brothers in business go to their workshop at Resource Centre in Duduza, where they manufacture goods from scratch as well as repairing damaged ones - such as couches, beds, coffee tables, kitchen units, and car seats. “Here at B&T Interior Design, we start products from raw material. We design and manufacture them according to the customer’s need, and our clients

are satisfied with our service,” said Motloung. “We discourage young people from seeking employment, but to create one for themselves. Everyone is an entrepreneur. Only that people are scared to take risk, and start their own businesses. Hence many people in January types CVs to look for jobs,” said Ngwani. “The growth we’re experiencing since started operating makes us happy. People brings faulty couches they bought from popular furniture shops to us to fix instead of returning them to the shops, that means our standard of manufacturing is highly recommended,” added Ngwazi.

Injury halts blossoming body building career!

T

umelo Mokone (19) from Duduza is heartbroken after his nourishing body building career stopped due to an injury after he fell on his hand a week ago, and broke his metacarpal. He was preparing for the SA Arnold Schwarzinegger Classics 2019 to take place from 17 to 19 May in Gauteng. Last year he won in all junior division contests that he attended. He was determined to winning the classic in May until he broke his hand, and is hospitalised since January 10. “My mind hasn’t accepted that I can’t train until I recover in 8 weeks’ from now. I was looking forward to the Arnold Sports Festival after I qualified for it from the South African Body Building Championship, organised by the International Federation Body Building - South Africa last year September in Rustenburg Civic Centre,” says Mokone. Mokone holds severally body building championships. Though he started as a hobby, he wants to be a professional body builder with international championships on his name. Thulani Radebe, owner of the Body Perfect Vision Gym, where Mokone trains, believes that he

is the next big thing in this industry to come out of Duduza. “This boy is an inspiration to may in body building. He has achieved what most body builders older than him hasn’t. Body builders in my gym are afraid to enter competitions, but he started at 17 competing with adults and always came out on top 3. If he can get a sponsor, he is going far,” says Radebe. “It’s not the first time his career stopped due to an injury. Two years ago he broke his uncle when weights fell on him at the gym while training. He will get through this too,”says Radebe.

Chief Whip’s support program for Matric on the right track! Following the release of 2018 Matric results, Tlakula High’s performance improved by 20%, (from 57% in 2017 to 77% in 2018) compared to other previous years. ANC Chief Whip Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi again visited the school on the Tuesday, January 15. His visit was part of the ongoing commitment since his office adopted the school to improve the school’s Matric results in Mathematics, Science and Accounting. A meeting to draw a plan of action was also attended by School Management, officials from district office, School Governing Body (SGB) members, DJ Cleo Foundation, Ntsane Masiloane Enrichment Programme, Palesa Ya Sechaba and Ofice of the Chief Whip. “We visited the school to have an assessment as to how the school has performed academically. We are happy as an office that the school has improved from 57% to 77% but most importantly is that the was greater improvement in Mathematics, Physical Science and Maths Literacy”. However there a great concern about Accounting which is one of the areas of improvement but generally we are satisfied with the academic performance. ANC Chief Whip further committed that his office will continue hosting the Annual Sports Day. “We’ve also committed to award the top performers in each and every term as a way of acknowledging their academic performance and we believe that this will have a further positive impact on the overall performance of the school” he said Cllr Dlabathi said they’ve also requested parents to play a role in monitoring and supporting their children in education. “We’ve also taken a decision to have parent’s meetings

and the 1st meeting will be held early in the year just to lay foundation and communicate the plans of 2019 from the school and the support point of view” he said. We strongly believe that we are on the right track and we’ve been assured that the programme is being supported and the culture of learning is now changing at the school. The situation is positive and we really hope that 2019 will be a much better year compared to the other previous years. Acting School Principal Jabulani Nyoni said generally the leader discipline is satisfactory and teacher moral is high, and therefore we’ll take advantage of those areas and undoubtedly do well come end of the year. There was great improvement in Mathematics (87.1%) and Physical Science (92.5%) pass rate. Head of Palesa Ya Sechaba Foundation Dolly Mokgatla said her organisation wants to do is go beyond the academic programme and look at other programmes that can enhance the skills of pupils beyond matric. “We strongly believe that entrepreneurship is a very important issue for the whole country and for the world as economies around the world are grown by good entrepreneurship environment, and therefore we are fortunate that in our country we’ve adopted an entrepreneurship programme from United States called Junior Achievement South Africa and as a result we would like to start this programme in our very own township, starting with Tlakula High because we already have established a relationship Tlakula High” she said. Palesa Ya Sechaba Foundation is one the organisation that has been drawn onboard to assist with learner support with a much focus in Mathematics for Grade 10.

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14 ife is a journey; Christianity is a race, until you attain the price, the race is not over yet. That is why in our anchor scripture today, Apostle Paul gave insight of the nature of the race we are engaged in. It is a marathon and once you start, you cannot go on sabbatical leave; you run to the end, finishing well as our Master Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith did (Hebrews 12:2). No matter your past achievements or experiences, no single moment should weigh you down. In other words, you must not live in the glory of past achievements or be burdened with the pains of unpleasant experiences, you have to rise, shake off the dust and press on for the future is greater and in it lies the glory. So until you get the prize of the high calling, you must keep running. Press on in your study of God’s word. Search the scriptures, engage in book to book study of God’s Word, in personal study etc. Go in deeply for in it are hidden treasures that will put you in charge on earth and bring glory to God. Press on in the place of prayer, in service and all your kingdom obligations. Let go of every weight and run the race set before you with patience. When you do, every day would an addition to the previous, drawing you closer to the Master. I pray for you, you shall not lose your focus as you run this race by fire.

18 January 2019

Prayer: Father, as I pray now, I receive fresh race to press on in life. Amen

R.I.P Phil ‘Chippa’ Masinga “His goal will forever be remembered!” MEC Mazibuko

South Africa, the sporting fraternity and football in particular is poorer after the passing of soccer legend Philemon “Chippa Phil” Masinga, says President Cyril Ramaphosa. The international football star passed away on Sunday (January 13) at a Parktown hospital due to ill health. Masinga is renowned for his performance as a striker for the famous side that claimed Bafana Bafana’s first and only Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy in 1996, as well as his goal that booked Bafana Bafana a ticket to the FIFA World Cup held in 1998 in France. “We shall forever be grateful to Philemon “Chippa” Masinga, as he was affectionately known, for being part of a collective in his deserved call ups to Bafana Bafana. A collective that helped put South Africa back on the international stage when he scored the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifier goal,” said the President. Masinga, a former Bafana Bafana striker, originates from Khuma, Stilfontein in the North West. The Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko has added her voice in mourning the passing of South African football legend Phil Masinga.

As 2019 coincides with our centenary year, we have decided to host a spectacular double final in the place where it all began – Barcelona. We are using this milestone and the power of football to make a strong connection to our ‘One Planet. One Health’ brand platform.” South Africa has much to celebrate with the country being only one of two to have won the tournament three times (2003, 2007 and 2009); in 2006 the country was named the best attacking team and produced the top goal scorer. In 2008 South Africa won the Team Spirit award and in 2013 and 2016 the teams were recognised by the Department of Sports and Recreation as the best development team in the country. The MEC has extended her heartfelt condolences to the Masinga family, remembering the star as having contributed greatly in raising the profile of South African football. Says MEC Mazibuko; “The passing of Phil Chippa Masinga has shocked and saddened a whole lot of us in the country and elsewhere. We are mourning one of the rare talents that contributed to taking South African soccer to greater heights following its re-entry into international stage, by winning the 1996 Africa Nations Cup”. “His goal that qualified the country to its first World Cup in 1998 will forever be embedded in the hearts and minds of many soccer loving South Africans. “Together with the likes of Lucas Radebe, Shoes Moshoeu, Pitso Mosimane, Augustine Makalakalane and many others from the triumphant class of 1996, were amongst the first talents to be exported post democracy. “On behalf of the Home of Champions people of Gauteng we would like to we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and entire sporting fraternity. In mourning his passing, we must not forget to celebrate his life, talent and achievements he shared with us. May his soul rest in eternal peace”, said the MEC.
