On Tuesday, July 16 the municipal wage conciliation was been postponed at the request of the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) and all the parties in the South African Local Government Bargaining Council (SALGBC) conceded. The conciliation process has since been extended while Samwu continuous to consult its constituents. But she regards the motives of the Afrikaaner lobby group as ‘curious’, as they smack of abuse of judicial processes for narrow political ends. “The threat to privately prosecute coincides with the process led by Parliament regarding possible amendment to Section 25 of the Constitution to expropriate land without compensation. At the heart of the action is exploiting the incident to advance a narrow narrative of failure of black farming,”said Parliament in their statement released to the media.
Home Affairs takes services online! LIVE-CAPTURE SYSTEM TO REDUCE QUEUES IN BRANCHES The Department of Home Affairs has recently launched its live-capture system. This new system will automate birth registrations and the re-issue of marriage and death certificates that are already in the national population register, and the printing of parents’ details in children’s passports. The uploading of the new software began on Saturday, 14 July, although with some glitches. Nationally, of the 38 large offices, 29 have been completed. The remaining nine large offices will be completed soon. In Gauteng, 15 offices were successfully tested out of the 29 live capture offices in the province. “The remaining Gauteng offices will also be completed. Only services for smart ID cards and passports will be affected in the 184 live capture offices and participating banks. Other services will be available.
[We are] committed to minimising service interruptions and [we] apologise to clients for the inconvenience caused,” the department said. Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba earlier announced that the department will be moving to paperless applications for birth, marriage and death registrations, as well as the printing of parents’ details on their children’s passports. “This is another way of ‘meeting the future’, by rising to opportunities created by technological advancements for maximising client satisfaction. “This system upgrade is a part of ongoing enhancements of the live-capture system to improve service quality by modernising processes. Documents will now be saved electronically and be easily retrieved upon request, as opposed to the old paperbased legacy system,” Gigaba said at the time.

Tree-killing pest identified in Bedfordview! A poisonous beetle that kills trees, known as polyphagous shot hole borer, has been recently identified in Bedfordview (Ekurhuleni) and all hands are on deck to stop it on its tracks. “DNA samples of the polyphagous beetle and the associated Fusarium euwallaceae fungus, taken from a row of trees in areas around Bedfordview (near Germiston) came back positive from the laboratory,” said the City in a statement. The polyphagous shot hole borer (PSHB), is an invasive pest originally from Asia. It got its name, PSHB, from the mark it leaves on the bark of a tree, which resembles shot gun bullet hole. The trees it infests often die from the poison it injects into the tree. The name "polyphagous" means eats many food host species. This beetle targets a wide range of tree species, both exotic and indigenous. Currently, the city's effective method of eradicating the spread of the infection is to cut down infested trees hosting the beetle‚ and to
The legendary South African musician Ali Katt has died. He died at the age of 60 after a lengthy illness on Monday, July 16. Albert Moroatshehla is a resident of Tembisa township in Ekurhuleni. His most famous song Let the Good Times Roll from his 1987 album, Have Mercy, is one of the most well known classics in the country. Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa has expressed his words of condolences to Ali Katt’s family. “A towering giant of the South African music industry famously known for hits like ‘Let the good times roll’ has fallen, with the passing of legendary musician ntate Ali Katt, at the age of 60 after a lengthy illness. We send our deepest sympathies to his family, friends & fans,” said Mthethwa in a statement. The music legend will be laid to rest on Saturday, July 21 in Tembisa.

It is also believed from tests conducted that if a tree has been killed by the beetle carrying and producing the fungus, and the tree is chopped and removed at ground level, the beetle could still survive in the stump leftover in the ground for some unknown period, and may simply target any new tree of certain species that are planted nearby in the near future.

Obama encourages young people to carry Madiba’s baton forward!
With the 15 000-strong crowd packed into Wanderers Stadium hanging on to his every word, former US President Barack Obama called on the world --with emphasis on the youth - to keep the torch of Nelson Mandela’s legacy burning. Obama delivered the 16th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg on Tuesday (July 17), a day before the International Nelson Mandela Day celebrations. Obama, whose foundation hosted 200 emerging young leaders on the African continent on Monday, said despite the challenges faced by the global community, these young people epitomise what Mandela stood for. He called on current leaders to lend a hand and support young people who will lead the world into the future. “Active citizenry, democratic governance and selflessness were just some of Mandela’s values that Obama called on the world to embody,” he said. In true Obama style, he delivered his speech orator style without a printed sheet in sight. He took the audience on a walk down memory lane to reflect on the 100 years of Mandela’s life and legacy, which brought with it changes in society and more importantly for South Africans, freedom. Obama reflected on how he was influenced by Madiba’s life as a young law student who watched as history unravelled in front of his eyes with Mandela’s release from prison after 27 years of incarceration. “Madiba’s light shone so brightly that in the late 70s, he could inspire a young college student on the other side of the world to reexamine [his] own priorities – to reconsider the small role that I might play in bending the arc towards justice.” "And now an entire generation has grown up in a world that, by most measures, has
gotten steadily freer, healthier, wealthier, less violent and more tolerant during the course of their lifetimes. It should make us hopeful.
"Let me tell you what I believe. I believe in Nelson Mandela’s vision. I believe in a vision shared by Gandhi and King. I believe in justice and in the premise that all of us are created equal,” said Obama.
To honour the centenary of Madiba’s birth, the lecture’s theme was ‘Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World’. It focused on creating conditions for bridging divides, working across ideological lines, and resisting oppression and inequality. In his speech, Obama tracked the social and
democratic progress the world has made in the 100 years between Mandela’s 1918 birth and 2018. Obama’s speech was preceded by speeches from high ranking dignitaries, who reflected on Madiba’s legacy, as the late Mandela was affectionately known. The lecture is an initiative of Nelson Mandela Foundation in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation. The event was graced by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, members of the Mandela Family, government ministers and leaders various political parties. The much awaited lecture was addressed by programme director Busi Mkhumbuzi, Mandela Foundation chairperson Professor Njab-

Addressing the audience, Motsepe, said the presence of everyone in the stands was living proof that the “legacy and spirit of Nelson Mandela is alive”. Machel said Madiba’s centenary was an opportunity to celebrate him “in all his incredible uniqueness”, and also to celebrate him as a representative of a broader collective leadership that had led South Africa and South Africans to freedom. Machel called on young people to take inspiration from Mandela’s life and carry the baton forward. “Madiba was wise enough to recognise the limits of the achievements of his generation. The youth must now carry forward the baton. “To honour Madiba’s legacy is to search and find those values, embrace them, make sacrifices and be of service, to make a better South Africa,” said Machel. President Ramaphosa said the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, from the very beginning, had been “global in its ambition, and broad and inclusive in its outreach”. The President said that his “Thuma Mina” (send me) message was “none other than Mandela’s message” of personal service. “Madiba is sending all of us to deal with corruption, and to root it out of South African soil.”

On Mandela Day the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit Northern Region in collaboration with various businesses celebrated the day by ensuring that that the children are entertained and receive all things children in normal families enjoy. The Ubuhle Bezwe home under the leadership of Ms. Barbara Mthimkhulu caters for thirty-five children whose ages range between 01 and 21. She started in 2000 with seven children. She is assisted by four volunteers in ensuring the kids’ upbringing is as normal as possible.The officers kicked off the day at the orphanage by cleaning the home and bathing the children. They served them with both breakfast and lunch and donated six soccer balls.

The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) made Mandela day to be a memorable day for the Primary school in Palm Ridge Tsietsi Ext 23 in their own back yard. It was not the first time DEMS officials visited the school. In April 2018, during the launch of winter awareness campaign, the department was offered the premises to enlighten the parents of the pupils and everyone in the neighbourhood. The department donated sporting attire and groceries to the school based at Tsietsi Informal Settlement. Community Safety MMC Cllr Vivian Chauke together with the Head of Department Mr. Sam Sibande, handed the attire to the school Principal.
EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit (Eastern Region) together with local businesspeople and the community made it a memorable Mandela Day for Simamisa Orphanage Children at Chief Albert Luthuli In Kingsway. They donated blankets, party packets, food parcels and four-plate stoves. The home was cleaned, the kids bathed and served with both breakfast and lunch. An anonymous good Samaritan donated a cake displaying a picture of Madiba as part of the 67minutes to help the disadvantaged kids. On realizing that the geyser was malfunctioning, the officers swiftly secured an electrician who fixed the geyser. The orphanage was started in 2016 with three kids by the Ms. Sonto Mabasa (59), who also is the manager the home.
The Helping Hand Project is a community initiative which invites members of the community to make a difference by simply visiting the centre and providing a painted handprint. For each individual handprint received, the centre donated R5 towards equipment that a local home, school or charity in the community requires to assist their day-to-day operations. Heidelberg Mall hosted their first ever Helping Hand Project on July 15 and 16, committing the local shopping center to community upliftment in the Heidelberg area and surrounding communities.
City of Ekurhuleni’s Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina led the Nelson Mandela Day celebrations with the city’s officials spreading far and wide across the city to carry out the ideals the icon stood for. The Mandela day’s activities commenced in Tembisa where mayor Masina led the activities of refurbishing Mr Shishi’s house, a pensioner living with his two sons at Enxiweni Section in Tembisa.

Ekurhuleni’s Environment and Waste Management Department had the privilege to celebrate Mandela Day with the Maake family in Ward 108, Katlehong South. The officials, joined by various stakeholders, adopted this family to their social responsibility campaign, as they recognize the living conditions of the family (the mother and daughter living with disabilities). Big renovations of the house were done These included painting the house inside and out, doing the pavement. MMC Ndosi Shongwe and her team came to support and celebrate this special day. Mapepeza MD, Lolliepop Mofoka, also took 67 minutes working with the team. Thanks to Katlehong Community Based Contractors and the many sponsors for their contribution to change the lives of this family. Lesabe Primary School also became part of this celebrations as they formed partnership with various stakeholders in the community of Wattville, Benoni. The school became a hive of activities as they celebrated the centenary with a full scale activity throughout the day. Savuka Managed Solutions made a donation of office furniture and assist in the painting and cleaning of the school. They were assisted by Ward 31 SACP Branch led by Tumi Mokheseng Ntsane, community members as well as the members of the school’s SGB committee.
Katlehong SAPS Acting Station Commander, Colonel Nomthandeki Mthembu together with her Management team & role players devoted their 67 minutes by reaching out to Leseding Early Leaning Centre pre-school. The local police officers cleaned the entire school premises.

The Katlehong School for the Deaf and Blind was visited by employees of the local McDonald’s Restaurant and group BASA (Banking Association SA,) who shared their 67 minutes having fun with the school kids from various parts of Ekurhuleni. The kids were entertained with goodies and had their faces painted.
The ANC Ekurhuleni Caucus, led by ANC Chief Whip Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi in conjunction with the City of Ekurhuleni officials handed over well rebuilt house in Daveyton. This after the Ekurhuleni Caucus through Taking Caucus To The People (TCP) programme visited the family of five orphans late last year and commitment to re-build the house. The family’s ordeal was initially brought to the attention of the office of the Chief Whip by a neighbour who requested that the family be assisted. The house was in a bad condition, and it posed danger to the occupants, however, it has since been demolished completely and was re-build. In his remarks Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi acknowledged the business which re-built the house and donated some furniture to the family. Meanwhile, Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina said the ANC does listen to the concerns of the citizens.

CONTRACEPTIVES - more to it than pills!

The number of teenage pregnancies has increased and a decrease in the number of young people using contraceptives in our communities. The Gauteng Education department reported last year that Ekurhuleni has the highest cases of teenage pregnancy, with one extreme case where a nine year old was expecting. Local health practitioners claim these worrying developments are mainly due to the lack of knowledge and myths associated with contraceptives, or ‘birth control medication.’ Maternal Child, Women and Men's Health Manager in the City of Ekurhuleni Thembane Masina says young sexually active women who have no intention of falling pregnant must know that contraceptives are not a one-size-fits-all remedy. "Although there are many different types of contraception, not all types are suitable for all situations. The most appropriate birth control method depends on an individual's overall health, age and desire to conceive in future," Masina said. The City's clinics offer a variety of birth control methods, such the popular Nur-Isterate among teenagers and the Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC). The LARC, which lasts for a long time, comes as an intra uterine device (IUD) that lasts for five years and an implant that last for three years. Another popular contraception is the hormonal contraception either in pill or injection form.

The clinics have the following contraceptives: - Combined oral contraceptive pill, such as Triphasil - Progestogen-only contraceptive pill, such as Microval Injectable hormonal contraception are: - Nur-Isterate, given every eight weeks - The Depo Provera injection, given every 12 weeks "Young people need to start exercising their right to healthcare and visit clinics to find out more about the appropriate birth control method that best suits them, and not rely on their friend's experiences," says Maternal Heath Manager Masina. Then there is also what is called barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms for both men and women.
Emergency Contraception Pill (ECP)
The ECP is a pill that is taken after having unprotected sex and can be taken up to three days after having had unprotected sex. For women of an average weight, the ECP is 98% effective, but is less effective for those who weigh more than 70kg – in such cases an IUD is recommended. This can be inserted up to five days after unprotected sex, and is more than 99% effective in the prevention of an unwanted pregnancy. Emergency contraception can be used to prevent pregnancy under the following circumstances:
- after having unprotected sex - normal contraception is not working well e.g. condom burst - missed more than one contraceptive pill - vomiting or had diarrhea while on the pill - missed injection All local health practitioners have encountered
Although there are many different types of contraception, not all types are suitable for all situations. myths that some contraceptives will increase appetite, leads to obesity and affect ones' mental wellbeing. There is no truth in those myths. Those who experience unpleasant symptoms are encouraged to visit their nearest clinic for medical attention, and for more information and options available to them.

He competed and lost in the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic on Sunday, July 15. Currently, Anderson has been ranked number 5 in the ATP World Tennis Rankings. ATP is the governing body of the men's professional tennis circuits. The 32 year old is born in Johannesburg. Brand South Africa congratulated the country’s sportsmen and women on their achievements at the past weekend. Brand SA said sport has great impact on the nation brand and its attractiveness on a global stage. It said that the nation brand is not preserved by a single dimension, but rather through diverse dimensions. “Thank you team South Africa, the country’s prowess in sport is and continues to reach great stature because of your dedication,” said Brand South Africa’s Chief Marketing Officer Linda Magapatona-Sangaret.
The young and talented Team Gauteng, which represented South Africa at the 6th edition of the International TriColor Games in Italy, have returned to Mzansi on Saturday, July 14 with over 170 medals. The team of over 90 Gauteng-based youth aged between 13 and 17, spent almost two weeks in the City of Reggio Emilia (Italy), competing with over 3000 athletes in swimming, football, rugby, basketball and athletics. South Africa’s first showing at the games delivered gold medals in athletics, soccer and rugby. It was in swimming where the team dominated with 50 gold, 40 silver and 20 bronze. “I’m so proud of team, who not only represented Gauteng, but the entire county. The outstanding achievements of these youngsters once again proves that Gauteng is truly the ‘Home of Champions’ and sporting excellence. It was our first time competing in this international event and to have made the impact we have for the first time is truly admirable. This is well for our sport development more so that the athletes are still at school,” Says the excited Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko. The 6th edition of the Tri-Color Game were held in honour of Nelson Mandela, as we commemorate his centenary celebration.

For the first time in foreign soil and the second time in history, the French national team have won the FIFA World Cup in Russia on Sunday, beating Croatia by 4-2. The French coach also made history by being the third man to lift the coveted Jules Rimmet trophy, both
as a coach and a player. His team became the first to win the World Cup without having to play extra time in the knock-out phase. France also took the FIFA Young Player Award, won by Kylian Mbappe.
