High performance vehicles donated to police to reduce crime in GP! POLICE JOINT EFFORT RECOVER CIGARETTES ROBBED DURING HEIST! A joint special operation comprising of SAPS members, Gauteng Community Safety and EMPD Public Order Policing Unit conducted a special operation which commenced on Thursday night, October 12 and ended well into the early hours of Friday.

Four men suspected to have been involved in the hijacking of the BAT (British American Tobacco) Imperial company vehicle over two weeks ago ended behind bars.

Members of the EMPD Public Order Policing Unit gave back up to the Provincial Task Team.

The first suspect, aged 56, was apprehended at Bara Taxi Rank found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm Vector pistol with 80 live rounds. The arrested suspect led the police to the second suspect, aged 49 who was arrest-

ed in Diepkloof, Soweto.

The third suspect (44) arrested also in turn led the police to the fourth male suspect (50) found in possession of an unlicensed 7.65 pistol with seven live rounds.

He was nabbed around 2am on Friday in Freedom Park near Eldorado Park.

The law enforcers confiscated over 30 boxes of different brands of cigarettes with the estimated value of R1.1million.

Among the additional suspected stolen goods confiscated were snuff tobacco, disposable nappies and dozens of pain tablets.

All four suspects were detained at Vanderbijlpark police station.

Tourism Monitors Programme Launched!

Tourism Minister Tokozile Xasa launched the pilot programme in Gauteng on Tuesday, October 17.

The programme places youth aged 18 - 35 in tourism hubs like Vilakazi Street in Orlando, Soweto, where they will help to improve tourist safety. It aims to revive the township tourism economy, will be rolled out to other provinces.

The Department of Tourism, in partnership with the Gauteng Tourism Authority, launched the programme in Vilakazi Street, which is the only street in the world where two Nobel Laureates – former President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu – have lived.

“This programme is aligned to the National Development Plan (NDP) goals and aims to create employment for 200 youth, who will be trained to become monitors at tourism destinations for a 36-month period,” Cabinet said.

Cabinet has welcomed the launch of the National Tourism Monitors Programme in Soweto, which aims to improve the safety of tourists. Cabinet encouraged business owners and communities in Gauteng to work with the tourism monitors to improve the safety of tourists and harness the economic potential from this industry.

All recruited Tourism Monitors will be placed mostly in areas in which they reside.

The placement areas are as follows: • Sedibeng – 35 monitors; • Johannesburg area (Vilakazi Street, Carlton Centre, Park Station and Red Bus) – 60 monitors and an additional 40 monitors which will be paid for by Johannesburg; • Ekurhuleni – 35 monitors of which 10 will be place at the OR Tambo International Airport; • Tshwane – 35 monitors; and • West Rand – 35 monitors.

While monitors will act as ambassadors, the Minister urged that they assist in developing a database of upcoming Small Medium and Micro Enterprise (SMMEs) Businesses in their areas of placement.

Monitors will also need to identify links in the value chain that may need improvement such as points for transportation in between the various attractions and traffic congestion points.

Launching the programme, Minister Xasa expressed the importance of increasing visibility around tourist hotspots. The aim of the monitors is to create access to information and ensure safety at destinations, while giving tourists quality services and experiences.

OR Tambo Schools Debate sharpens future advocates of children’s rights!

To mark the centenary celebration of life and legacy of OR Tambo, the City of Ekurhuleni, in partnership with Gauteng Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture department hosted Schools Debates modelled on the United Nation (UN) Negotiation style with the aim to produce Children Declaration advocating children’s rights, vision and aspirations towards the realisation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The debates consisted of 88 learner delegates, aged between 11-15 years from various municipalities that contributed to the liberation struggle, in honour of OR Tambo life and legacy. Amongst learner delegates some were from Zambia, Mbizana Local Municipality (Eastern Cape) the birthplace of OR Tambo, Sedibeng District Municipality and, Ekurhuleni, where OR Tambo spent his later years until his passing.

At the time there was a proverb that excluded the blind and the lame from entering the House (temple); hence it was made known to King David that Mephibosheth was lame in both his feet.

This meant that Mephibosheth had limitations, he had shortfalls and imperfections.

All the same King David ignored his defects, imperfections and his shortfalls and said “you’ll always eat at my table”.

Now today there’s a King who’s looking for the Mephibosheth’s of our time. He is looking for the broken, those who’ve been ostracized, relegated and forgotten, not only is he going to give them a place in his kingdom, but he will heal them of their lameness in every area of their lives.

On Tuesday, October 10, Gauteng Premier David Makhura, MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements Paul Mashatile launched the John Dube Mega Human Settlements Project near Duduza Ext.1 in Ekurhuleni.

The ceremony was led by Human Settlements minister Lindiwe Sisulu.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina and the MMC for Human Settlements Cllr. Lesiba Mpya, joined the government delegation in Duduza, south of the City.

The Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile said that the Gauteng government was working hard to reduce the backlog of housing especially in Ekurhuleni.

Mashatile was speaking at the launch of the R35 billion John Dube City Mega project.

He said that the project was the sixth that has over 10 000 houses in Ekurhuleni and was going to ensure that government is close to the realisation of building 100 000 houses in the municipality.

“If each Mega Project has more than 10 000 houses, and Ekurhuleni has six it means we are already close to the 100 000 houses to be built by the Ekurhuleni municipality in the next five years,” he said.

Mashatile said that the John Dube City will benefit the residents of KwaThema, Duduza, Tsakane and elderly people, the disabled, child headed households and people who applied in 1996 from the communities will be prioritised.

The construction of houses will be rolled out in three phases over a period of three years.

The John Dube Mega Human Settlements Project will yield over 10 000 mixed houses and City of Ekurhuleni’s very first university campus and a CBD (Central Business District).

This follows the launch of the Daggafointein Mega Project which will yield over 16 000 houses also in Ekurhuleni.

“Return OUR Tablets and Textbooks for the next generation!”

The Gauteng Education Sedibeng East District Office held a march on Wednesday, October 11 to encourage learners (especially matric) to returning of state property. This includes all the textbooks and tablet computers that schools have given to them. According to the Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, the tablets are reused by upcoming learners in every school.

The march started at the petrol station where they invited all Heidelberg and Ratanda schools to join in. Lesedi Local Municipality executive mayor, Cllr Lerato Maloka, joined the public demonstrations alongside school pricipals and learn-

ers, which concluded at the Ratanda Multipurpose Hall with a formal programme.

Reasons behind the march were to join the Education MEC in making people of Gauteng aware of returning these state assets, as many people still have textbook at their homes.

Most of the tablets have been reported broken or stolen.

People must know that these tablets and textbook belong to the school, and they should take them back to where they got them.

Many of the high school students have put their signatures on the pledge posters, promising to return the tablets and text-

books when done with school.

The textbook and tablet retrieval campaign was themed I USE, I CARE FOR, I RETURN - also written on the pledge by the learners, which contains the following commitment: “1. I solemnly swear that I shall take care of my textbooks and tablet as they will be passed down to the next fellow learner.

2. I solemnly swear to bring my textbooks and tablet to school every day.

3. I solemnly swear to bring back my textbooks and tablet after my final exams in good condition, So Help Me God!”

The Ratanda Clinic held their annual open day on Saturday, October 21. Officials and health care facility staff joined the health NGO groups to create awareness on living healthy lifestyles.

The Ratanda Thandisizwe Day Care Centre hosted a fun walk in raising awareness in the community on Cancer.

The crowd made up of children from the Early Childhood Development centre, parents and teachers who all wore pink in commemoration of the campaign. Lesedi Local Municipality executive mayor Lerato Maloka also joined in the walk on Friday, Ocober 20.

October is internationally recognized as a Month for Mental Health, Eye Care and Breast Cancer awareness.

According to reserch by CANSA (The Cancer Association of South Africa), Breast Cancer is the cancer aff ecting women in South Africa the most. In 2013, deaths from breast cancer and cancers of the female genital tract, accounted for 0.7% and 1% of all deaths in South African respectively.

RATANDA CLINIC HOST ANNUAL OPEN DAY!

On Saturday, October 21, the Ratanda Clinic held the annual open day for everyone in the community to come and find help in whichever way the medical issue they face.

The event focused on children because many of them don’t go to clinic and they never received any medical attention.

The kids were instructed on how to wash their hands properly, using soap and water, before eating and after using the toilet or touching any unclean stuff (animals, sand and many others).

The main purpose was educating children and their parents, on the many free services the facility has plus the

support groups and NGOs who assist in keeping people healthy, like HIV/ TB testing stations amongst others.

Ratanda Clinic invited the PSA and JAPACO to help young and old men with their manhood issues. The residents who attended shared their opinion and said they had benefited from the annual open day. Some have found new respect in having a healthy lifestyle and save healthcare workers unnecessary work-related strain, as some diseases affecting people are preventable ones.

The Ratanda Clinic is located at Boschhoek street, near the stadium and the library.

Multi-sport Facility open!

Gauteng MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko officially opened the Multipurpose Sports Court for the community of Ratanda.

She was joined by Lesedi Local Municipality mayor Lerato Maloka and officials from The Sports Trust, Gauteng Sports Council and Government on October 13, to open the 4-in-1 sports facility.

Basketball, netball, soccer and volleyball are the main sporting codes allowed to participate, mainly made for the youth to use it to train and improve their abilities.

The facility is located behind the Ratanda Multipurpose Hall, fitted with a unique floor made to ease the impact of someone falling, plus it has made adjustment for all sports to enjoy its surfaces with movable poles.

The opening of the multipurpose sports court was part of Gauteng Provincial Government's tour during the Friday, where MEC Mazibuko led the launch of three libraries in Sedibeng (Bantu Bonke in Midvaal, Vischkuil and Ratanda extension 7 in Lesedi).

More improvements to sports and recreation facilities in the municipality include the construction of a sports field in Ratanda extension 23 estimated at R15 million by Lesedi municipality, and, the refurbishment of the Ratanda stadium (a promise by MEC Mazibuko during the Ntirhisano outreach visits last year).

Gauteng honours O.R. Tambo through a sport tournament!

The Gauteng Provincial Government in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni and the Gauteng Sports Confederation will proudly be hosting the OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games from 28-29 October 2017 at Germiston Stadium, as a part of the centenary celebrations of liberation icon, OR Tambo Tambo was true hero of the nation who shaped South Africa’s vision, mission and value system. His impact left an enduring legacy which included forging international unity which these games hope to continue.

The games are made up 6 sporting codes: athletics, basketball, football, netball, rugby and swimming, and are a culmination of district and regional completions from which teams were selected to compete at the provincial games taking place. Top achievers from the games will be selected from a squad that will jet off to Italy, where they will take part in the Tri-Colour Games in July 2018.

Upwards of 1000 young people from all over Gauteng will be vying to be crowned the champions of these inaugural games of what is to be a grand annual affair.

The City of Ekurhuleni is ready and set to celebrate O.R Tambo’s 100th year birthday through musical harmonies over the weekend. The undying spirit of O.R Tambo the great musical conductor will see choirs from across the city battle it out during the O.R Tambo Choral Music Excellence Competition set for the 28-29 October at the Germiston City Hall.
