LEGACY OF O.R. TAMBO COINED! In commemorating the birth of the legendary struggle stalwart and 'grandfather' of our Democracy, Oliver Regional Tambo, a set of special coins were unveiled in Wattville,Benoni on Wednesday October 4.

The new coins consist of a R5 circulation coin and a series of collectible coins, themed 'Freedom, Democracy and Culture'.

Dignitaries flooded the coin launch at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct, spotted Former President Motlanthe, Governor Kganyago, Acting Executive Mayor Doctor Xhakaza, the Tambo Family and notable heroines of the struggle: Mam' Zanele Mbeki and Dr. Frene Ginwala.

Carnival Spectacular!

Over 30 000 people, draped in the brightest of colours, gathered in Tshwane to take part in this year’s Gauteng Social Cohesion Carnival.

The carnival, which coincided with Heritage Day celebrations, saw people dressed in their traditional attire, fancy dress costumes, choir outfits and uniforms.

They mingled with brass bands, drum majorettes and colourful floats measuring up to five meters in height as they paraded the streets of the capital city. There was also a procession of stilt walkers and Samba dancers who gave carnivalgoers a glimpse into the country’s rich and diverse cultures.

Several countries' embassies such China and Argentina also represented their cultures.

Muntu Vilakazi from Vosloorus stole the show when he clinched the coveted top prize on Saturday night, September 23rd in Kempton Park.

WATER CONSUMPTION REACHES PEAK SEASON

As we have entered the water demand peak season during the September and October months, it is anticipated that the water supply will be severely strained by the predictable water demand of our local residents.

To prevent any interruptions during this season, Rand Water has implemented Stage 1 or their procedure known as the Operation of Bulk Water Distribution Network during Water Supply Emergencies, which defines a phased approach to dealing with water supply emergencies.

Any person can now lay a complaint, via Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #mypolicestation, on the misconduct of South African Police Service officials.

“People must report genuine cases, as scarce resources will be used to resolve these complaints. This campaign is meant to put people first, as Batho Pele government principles demand from all civil servants. We need accurate information, address of incident, police station, town and province to optimally respond,” the Minister said in a video on his social media page.

With more than one million Twitter followers, minister Mbalula has instructed all SAPS Generals to take complaints of police stations seriously.

If need be, the necessary disciplinary steps will be taken against the SAPS employees should it be found that they were neglect or unprofessional in their conduct or the service they rendered or did not render. #mypolicestation does not replace a police station and all offences must be reported to the nearest officer or station, however, this allows the public to tip-off the Police Ministry on lack of service delivery.

Symposium takes first step to a University of Ekurhuleni!

The Green Reef Development company, one of the City’s main developers, has set aside the marked portion of land to be used to build the University for Ekurhuleni residents. The portion is located between the City’s main towns of Boksburg, Germiston and Kempton Park. Before any construction can begin, the City needs approval from the Higher Education & Training department.

Reported By Stephen Seakgwe The call for a university in the City of Ekurhuleni has been answered. A crowd of industry and academic experts joined the government at the first-ever University Symposium, held at Benoni on September 21.

The symposium was opened by the Executive Mayor, Mzwandile Masina, who was delighted to have such a great turnout of over 350 delegates from a variety of sectors.

– University.

The mayor said the City must respond to the need for a science and technology-enabled society, to respond to the fourth industrial revolution and its demands.

“Plus the City is the manufacturing hub of the country and the continent, so it important we continue to develop skills in our City to drive industrialization and development.”

He said during his inaugural State of the City Address last year, he announced that the Metro will be looking the idea of building the institution.

“The building of a university is a National government competency, but if we sit back and wait for them to do everything, we might not realize the potential of it.

So we took practical steps, where possible, to some investment in a feasibility study to be used as a basis by the Department of Higher Education & Training,” said Mayor Masina.

Mayor Masina has confirmed that support the dream for EAST-U from Gauteng Provincial Government and other key stakeholders. However, the public must wait for a statute from the Department of Higher Education and Training before the excitement of its existence begins.

The City has invested in completing a report for National Government, including a bite-sized business case study which was presented to delegates at the symposium.

It was received by deputy minister of the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Buti Manamela.

The mayor was also excited by the interest shown by the private-sector in this symposium and their contribution. “One of the developers (Green Reef Development) has made his land available for the building of the University, at no cost to the City.

But first, the basis must be completed and endorsed first by National Government.”

What does EAST-U stand for?

This event is best described as the compiling of a bid to build the university, much like South Africa’s proposal to host the Rugby World Cup in 2023. In this case, there is no ‘France and Ireland’ competing against us. Only Minister Blade Nzimande holds the power to the possibility of a centralized hub for economic growth and social change.

Envisaged as a Fourth-Generation University, EAST-U will be made different from all other existing institutions: delivering education using a ‘blended model’ incorporating online learning, distance learning and the campus experience.

The proposed schools (Centres of Excellence) include: - Transport & Logistics; Agriculture, Agro-processing and Food Technology; Engineering; Tourism & Hospitality; Vocational Training; Accounting; Entrepreneurship; Design & Innovation; Aviation & Aerospace.

The City of Ekurhuleni is willing to partner with private and government stakeholders in implementing the project. About 18 months has been proposed to get the investment and partnerships to fund and begin laying the foundation.

If all goes well, by 2021 the Ekurhuleni Applied Science & Technology University will be opening its doors to the masses in demand for quality education and vocational training.

KEY POINTS ON EAST-U….

Around R6 Billion must be invested to build the University, funded by stakeholders in Academia, Business and Government.

The University will partner with existing academic institutions (Specialized skills academies, TVET colleges etc.) in creating satellite campuses across the City.

The EAST-U main campus will be located in a ‘geographic triangle’ between Germiston, Boksburg and Kempton Park.

Prospective and existing small business and co-operatives from the Gauteng province can now access both financial and non-financial aid online. The Gauteng Enterprise Propeller, GEP in short, has officially launched the online system in Mabopane on October 2nd.

The MEC of Agricultural, Rural and Economic Development Lebogang Maile led the ceremony in the Tshwane township, introducing the Gauteng Automated Business Services System to the people.

Hosting in partnership with the South African Mint (SA Reserve Bank division) were the City of Ekurhuleni and the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation.

The R5 circulation coin clearly has the embodiment of the 'Order of the Companions of OR Tambo', which was instituted in 2002 to honor international heads of State and eminent people for their friendship to South Africa - also featured on other coins.

This coin entered circulation on Sunday, October 1 released by the South African Mint.

Worth its face value, the SA Reserve Bank encourages the public not to hold on to the R5 coins, when received as change, as commemorative coins must be appreciated by everyone.

This symbols reflected on the coin include the Majola snake (a mole snake) which, according to African mythology, embodies friendship, protection and active support. The walking stick symbolizes support and commitment; and the universal Yin & Yang suggest a meeting point for diverse spiritual energy.

The Collectable Coin set

The first R50 coin is a sterling silver proof coin, featuring a stylized interpretation of OR Tambo as a young man.

The other coin is a R50 base metal coin, non-circulating legal tender coin. It reflects the life of Oliver Tambo during his years as ANC president-general.

The biggest and most coveted coin is a pure gold R500 proof coin, weighing one ounce. It represents O.R Tambo's 'Mission in Exile' and only a 100 will be sold.

This new system, accessed via the GEP website, has a range of services made to promote a paperless process for seeking business support. According to Maile, the automated portal aims to ensure that there is a seamless stream of applications, improve service delivery and reduce the turnaround times. This will ensure effectiveness and efficiency of all processes and formalize illegal traders to radically transform the township economy.

GEP’s automated system will give support to SMMEs, Liquor Trading Associations and aspiring traders in the following ways: • Apply for a liquor license • Apply for financial support/funding • Apply for non-financial support (training, mentorship etc.)

• Register a business • E-Invoicing services • BBBEE Affidavit certificate for EMEs • E-Learnership submissions • Register for Tshepo 1 Million programme •Access GEP services The GEP online system is part of the Gauteng Government’s programme for revitalizing the township economy.

The provincial government has thrown extensive support to SMMEs and co-operatives, with over R6 Billion set aside for township-based suppliers doing business with Government.

The Business Automated Services System is part of Gauteng Government’s flagship programme popularly known as “QONDIS’ ISHISHINI LAKHO”, which seeks to help SMMEs to fix their businesses and unlock bottlenecks for those business owners so that they can participate in the main-stream economy, in line with the Gauteng Economic Development Plan.

The aim of this programme is to ensure that the City of Ekurhuleni is kept clean, whilst promoting social cohesion and preservation of the environment.

This year’s carnival created more than 3500 work opportunities and benefited 270 000 entrepreneurs who were providing services to the carnival. The majority of those who benefited are township business.

Congratulations to South Africa's womens team, Banyana Banyana, for lifting the 2017 COSAFA Women's Championship, for the fourth time. They beat their Zimbabwean counterparts in the Finals in Bulawayo on Monday, September 25.

The thrilling encounter between the neighbouring states got the Zimbabwean stadium filled to its capacity, and for sure, it was cer-

Gauteng Sports Awards 2017!

The glittering star-studded occasion broadcast live from The Globe of SilverStar Casino in Mogale City was attended MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in Gauteng Faith Mazibuko and mayors, officials and dignitaries.

Hosted by the charismatic Thomas Mlambo and Vaylen Kirtley (SABC Sport presenters), it was an explosion of sport and entertainment with musicians setting the celebratory tone.

Award presenters included sporting personalities, government officials and celebrities from TV, radio and print media.

This year’s theme celebrated the legacy of struggle icon OR Tambo. It opened with a montage marking the life and times of the former ANC president. The stage was set for a magnificent night of celebrating the finest in sporting talent.

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Thulas Nxesi and SAFA (SA Football Association) President Danny Jordan congratulated the women's football side on their big win.

The interim coach, Desiree Ellis, has received massive support for her role in leading the girls throughout the tournament.

Wide calls for her to take the position permanently are gathering momentum, soon to influence the decision makers in favour of her.

Coach Desiree Ellis is the first South African to win the COSAFA Women's Championship both as a player and a coach. Ellis now has her second gold medal of the COSAFA Women's Championship.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa led the high-level delegation to England on Sunday, September 24 to submit South Africa’s bid to host the Rugby World Cup in 2023.

The delegation delivered a convincing presentation to the World Rugby Council on the following day (Monday), competing against France and Ireland.

Ramaphosa was joined by ministers in the Sports and Recreation department, SA Rugby President Mark Alexander and CEO Jurie Roux and Springbok former captain Francois Pienaar.
