EKURHULENI HONORS HANI FAMILY WITH MUSEUM!

NOVEMBER 11-25 + ONLINE e-Mapepeza (www.issuu.com/mapepeza) The home of fallen SACP leader, Thembsile ‘Chris’ Hani, has been officially declared a National Heritage Site. The City of Ekurhuleni has unveiled plans to improve the home and create a museum dedicated to telling the story of Hani.

Pictured is a silhouette of Chris Hani with this message: “On 10 April 1993, twenty three years ago, South African Communist Party secretary-general Chris Hani was assassinated outside here, at his home by Januzs Walus, an anti-Communist Polish refugee who had close links to the white nationalist AWB. Walus encountered Hani leaving home alone, so he followed him a few blocks to the local superette, where Hani bought a newspaper. Walus decided not to do it in the shopping centre because there were a lot of people. He took a different route back to Hakea Crescent, arriving just as Hani pulled up in his Toyota sedan. Donning his gloves, and armed, Walus was ready. He pulled up in his car directly behind Hani’s in the driveway. He put the pistol in the belt of his trousers behind his back.

Seeing ‘Mr Hani’ move away from the car, Walus did not want to shoot him in the back. He called to Chris saying, “Mr Hani”, when comrade Hani turned, Walus fired the first shot into his body. As he turned and fell down, Walus fired a second shot at his head. Comrade Hani was with his daughter Nomakwezi, then 15 years old. His wife, Limpho, and two other daughters, Neo (then 20 years old) and Lindiwe (then 12 years old) were away at the time. Also, implicated in the assassination was Conservative Party MP Clive DerbyLewis.”

Chris Hani, who will forever be remembered for his triple HHH programme – a campaign that was introduced by Hani to ensure access to proper housing and health care for the masses, and fight hunger.

Recently, a woman was taken by five men, who according to hospital and police report, was raped by a gang before being dumped at a bus station. Though she was unable to remember the events of the previous evening, tests conducted revealed that she had been raped repeatedly.

There was a trace of Rohypnol in her blood.

Rohypnol is presently being used as a date rape drug. It is actually a small sterilization pill which is now being used by rapists to drug their targets at parties.

The drug makes the mind of the target (would be victim) go blank so that she does not remember anything that transpired and worse still, the drug sterilizes the victim so that she doesn't conceive from the rape and the rapist need not worry about having his identity revealed later by a paternity test.

• Take a cool bath or shower. Use lukewarm water.

• Don`t take salt tablets unless specified by a physician.

• Spend more time in air conditioned places.

• Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated, or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day, usually early morning or in the evening.

In an effort to implement cost-cutting measures in all campuses, Gert Sibande TVET College (GSC) has recently adopted a new strategy with innovative initiatives.

One of the initiatives was to stop the purchases of purified bottle water which cost the college approximately R6 per 500ml bottle, and replace it with a sustainable cost-effective solution to get drinkable water.

The college then decided to purchase a water purification system so that municipal water can be further purified to match the quality

of bottled water. The purification system is currently being tested at GSC Central Office in Standerton.

It will be monitored and if successful, it will be rolled out to all campuses.

According to Faith Sibeko, central office employee, the new purification system works extremely well and the water is of better quality than bottled water.

She added that waiting for the purchases of bottled water is now a thing of the past as purified water is readily available at all times.

Sasol launches project to help learners get better eyesight!

On Thursday, November 3, Sasol launched the Vision for Change learner support project, aimed at helping the vision of primary school learners.

The campaign began at eMbalenhle in the Govan Mbeki Municipality (Mpumalanga).

This project supports learners that are part of the existing Sasol Jump Start programme. The Jump Start programme is a numeracy intervention in support of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI).

“As Sasol we believe that the Vision for Change project will improve learners’ confidence, by giving them improved vision we give an opportunity to excel. Learners will be empowered, as a result they will do better in class, on the sports field as well as in their communities,” said Mashudu Ndou, Senior Manager Sasol Social Investment and Ikusasa. .

More than 2600 learners from financially underprivileged families will benefit from the project

Excited learners with their new spectacles during the SASOL’s Vision for Change launch at a eMbalenhle primary school.

The Vision for Change project is a partnership initiative with the Department of Education and Department of Health to provide free eye testing services and treatment.

The learners that will be identified with visual impairments during the tests shall receive new pairs of prescription spectacles. .

The local Department of Education has granted permission for the health care specialists to visit schools and conduct eye tests for learners.

This approach will reduce the risk of transporting learners to health facilities for consultation and treatment.

RESERVES NOW USED TO SUPPLY GAUTENG WITH WATER!

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is in the process of releasing water from the country’s reserves at Sterkfontein Dam into the Vaal Dam. The release is necessitated by the low dam level of the Vaal Dam that is due to the drought and the high evaporation as a result of high temperatures.

The water will flow from the Sterkfontein Dam into the Nuwejaarspruit, then into the Wilge River which will then feed the Vaal.

The release of the water from the reserve storage as the Sterkfontein Dam is, forms part of the process of managing the dam level at the Vaal to stay at or above 25% of capacity. This process

is envisaged to be over 54 days till the end of December.

The release, which begins on November 7, allows for the volume at 20 cubic metres per second, which will rise incrementally to reach its peak of 70 cubic metres per second at the beginning of December. This process will then taper off back to the initial 20 cubic metres per second towards the end of December when the release will be ended.

In total the release will allow for a maximum of 200 million cubic metres to have been released at the end of the envisaged 54 days. All this water is meant to refill the Vaal and therefore all those along the waterways of the Nuwejaarspruit, the Wilge and the Vaal are

reminded not to engage in any illegal activities like unauthorised abstraction or diversion of the resource.

Whilst this activity will bring some stability to the Vaal dam, the reality of the drought should be realized. The need to continue water conservation and the wise use of water remains. South Africa is a water scarce country, ranked as the 39th driest country in the world; that is drought-stricken at the moment.

All water users are encouraged to adhere to water restrictions. Municipalities will continue to enforce adherence to the restrictions according to their bylaws and where necessary take appropriate action.

City of Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina, presents the official letter written by O.R Tambo to the City of Emilia Romagna (Italy) in 1976, it was gladly received by President Zuma.

On Thursday, October 27, hundreds gathered at Wattville's Tamboville cemetery to witness the wreathlaying ceremony dedicated to Oliver Reginald and Adelaide Tambo. President Jacob Zuma was joined by members of the Tambo family, senior officials and politicians and other dignitaries.

Oliver Reginald (O.R) Tambo and mam' Adelaide Tambo were iconic struggle heroes who sacrificed their lives to leading the masses of South Africans as members of the African National Congress (ANC).

O.R Tambo was the longest serving president of the liberation party.

On this day in 1917 October 27, O.R Tambo was born. Next year, the Centenary celebrations will be hosted in the Eastern Cape near the birthplace of the late ANC president.

2017 NSFAS Funding Applications Closing soon!

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has started the rollout of the Student Centred Model by opening online applications as from Monday, 01 August 2016 until 30 November 2016.

Current Matric learners who will need NSFAS financial assistance at universities/TVET colleges in 2017, are encouraged to start applying now on the NSFAS website (www.nsfas. org.za).

The Student Centred Model is meant to open a direct relationship between NSFAS and its students, from registration phase to completion of their studies.

The system will help in alleviating payment delays and new applications for funding every year.

• Students who have never received NSFAS funding must apply online • All students who were previously funded by NSFAS and are not funded in 2016 must apply online • All students who have signed their Loan Agreement Forms (LAF) or Schedule of Particulars (SOP) for 2016 and are currently receiving NSFAS funding DO NOT HAVE TO REAPPLY. SOX INN dedicate win to the late Cappy Mokoa!

In the turn of events, the tournament was filed with unpredictable emotions as the three-time champions and defenders of the LPA trophy, Siwelele, saw a ‘white-wash’ loss to the Blackball Masters in one of their semi-final games.

On the weekend of October 29th and 30th, the Lesedi Pool Association (LPA) held their fourth all-teams tournament this year at the L&S Sports Bar in Rensburg, Heidelberg.

The tournament attracted participation of 13 teams from Ratanda, Shalimar Ridge, Vosloorus, Tsakane and Duduza who battled it out to be the best in pool table sport.

The defending champions went on to beat Blackball Masters 4-3 to qualify for the final, which they lost 4-2 against the better equipped and grieving Sox Inn Pool Club.

VOSLOORUS-BASED pool team, Sox Inn proved their hunger to win the tournament when they clinched the final game despite having to play without a member and mourning another who recently lost his life.

A moment of silence was held in honor for the founder of the LPA, Cappy Mokoa, before the first games of the tournament got underway.

The association was established in the 1980’s by the now late Cappy Mokoa of the Sox Inn Pool Club, who died in the early hours of Saturday morning. The funeral service was held at Vosloorus on Saturday, November 5.
