Repo rate unchanged at 6.5% THE Reserve Bank has decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.5% per annum, Governor Lesetja Kganyago said on Thursday (May 24).

City firefighters brave the cold for training!

SEVENTY firefighters from various fire stations across the City of Ekurhuleni volunteered to participate in this life saving program in preparation of the changing weather patterns whereby flooding and drowning becomes a yearlong phenomenon.

The team is under the guidance of their fire and swimming instructor Mr. Gerald Moswathupa affectionately known as Mr. G, the lessons are being held in Boksburg indoor

swimming pool.

The team is divided into two main groups of thirtyfive each.

The teams attend four days in a week starting from Tuesday till on Friday. Tuesdays and Thursdays are days set aside for the first group while the second group attend on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The main objective of the swimmers is to increase their skills in surface water rescue, swift water rescue and ultimately, to be deep sea water divers.

Some of the members of the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) fire fighters who braved the cold swimming pool water to sharpen their surface water rescue skills.

The exercise only objective is to improve skills to enhance quality lifesaving techniques in the water.

The DEMS have thanked their sister department Sport Recreation and Culture under the City of Ekurhuleni for the opportunity given.

Five arrested for cash services theft!

NATIONAL Police Commissioner, General Khehla Sitole, has welcomed the arrest of five suspects accused of stealing an estimated R4 million from companies rendering cash related services.

The suspects were arrested in two separate incidents, which were a collaboration between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Ekurhuleni Police Department (EMPD).

They managed to successfully recover over R1.5 million of the stolen cash.

In the first incident, a security guard working for a cash delivery security company is alleged to have disappeared with a large amount of cash that was collected at a certain bank on 30 April 2018.

The company reported the alleged theft at the Hillbrow Police Station and the case was transferred to the Provincial Investigating Unit (PIU) for further investigation.

The investigation team worked around the clock to trace the suspects and on Thursday (May 17), they arrested a man in Doornfontein, Johannesburg.

The team then proceeded to Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal, where they recovered over R200 000 as well as American dollars estimated at R500 000, which were also part of the stolen cash.

A suspect was arrested and appeared at the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on Monday facing a charge of theft of money. He was remanded in custody until his next appearance on 29 May. In another incident, two employees of another cash delivery security company, the driver - Clement Matjoji

and crew member - Mbangiseni Rapholo, are alleged to have collected cash from various clients on May 7.

The duo then went back to the depot without the collected money. The company then opened a case of theft of money estimated at R4.6 million at the Germiston Police Station.

This case was also transferred to PIU for investigation, which saw both Matjoji and Rapholo arrested for theft of money.

They have already appeared at the Germiston Magistrates’ Court and their case was remanded.

The investigating team also arrested two suspects at a house in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, and recovered approximately R1.5 million on Tuesday.

The house belongs to a relative of Rapholo’s brother. He and another family member were arrested on a charge of possession of suspected stolen money. The duo will appear in the Germiston Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Sitole has welcomed the arrests.

“The collaboration of our resources in order to fight against this scourge of bank related crimes that threaten the economic viability of this country is yielding results.”

The National Commissioner said such collaboration will go a long way in ensuring that police “stamp the authority of the State in order to make sure that the citizens of South Africa are and feel safe”.

Gen. Sitole commended the level of investigative work that led to the arrests.

Government’s first drone takes off!

Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development (GPDID) has launched the province’s first drone on Monday, May 21, to monitor and collect data in a bid to improve inefficiencies and reduce on project delays.

The drone, which is the first to be used to monitor infrastructure projects in conjunction with the business intelligence house in GPDID’s nerve centre, Lutsinga Infrastructure

House.“This new intervention essentially combines human intelligence, business intelligence and now artificial intelligence to ensure that the entire value chain of project deliver is efficient and that projects are delivered in time, within cost and at the right quality,” said MEC Jacob Mamabolo.

Mamabolo said they came to the Ekurhuleni township to demonstrate that it is possible for the government to be efficient

in delivering infrastructure projects that we implement in communities through the use of smart technologies. “We are combining artificial intelligence with human intelligence, as well as our project management systems to ensure the integrity of our data.

arlier this month, the Gauteng Department of Social Development and SAPS rescued thirteen (13) teenage boys who were lured into a counterfeit sports academy and allegedly raped for months by a football coach in Soweto.

The 34-year-old ‘coach’ who ended up committing suicide due of his fear of incarceration, recruited 29 boys to a bogus soccer academy which also placed them in various schools in Soweto since January this year.

According to media reports, the man was alleged to have raped some of his recruits for months and was under police custody pending investigation.

This has raised an alarming concern over negligence of parents, their inability to do background checks before sending their children to academies.

Similar incidents have happened over the years where young girls were lured into human trafficking syndicates from bogus modelling agencies.

The Lesedi Local Municipality, in partnership with the Gauteng government, hosted the inaugural Lesedi Local Municipality Youth Expo on 29 and 30 May 2018, at Ratanda Multipurpose Hall. Although it was said the expo will reach the entire youth of the municipality, the hype was all contained at the main hall in Ratanda.

Young people from Ratanda showed up in their numbers, putting their hopes in the exhibitors and organizations that came to offer their services.

Some got the chance to sign up to the Gauteng Province youth empowerment programme, Tshepo1Million, and the high school learners received information on various career opportunities in government organizations.

The Executive Mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality, Cllr. Jacob Khawe made a brief appearance to officially open the Lesedi Youth Expo. Other organized activities (music, business and digital hubs) in other venues were not well communicated, resulting in the local youth choosing their own paths instead of participating in what was made for them. The cold weather did not play a positive role in ensuring full turnout for both days. But this is a work in progress for the organizers of the first major career expo. This event has also been dubbed the ‘Gauteng youth mini-expo’ as a lead-up to the main event taking place at Nasrec from 9-17 June.

Young blood dominate PSL Awards!

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) honoured their outstanding players, coaches and referees for the 2017/18 football season in Sandton on Tuesday night (May 29).

Mamelodi Sundowns and Maritzburg United were the big winners of the night.

Percy Tau, the Mamelodi Sundowns attacking dynamo whose performances earned him rave reviews this season walked away with the coveted 2017/18 PSL Footballer of the Season award. Tau also took the 2017/18 Absa Premiership Player’s Player of the Season – as voted by his peers (but not his teammates).

He left Sandton with cheques of R250,000 and R200,000 for his accolades.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Pitso Mosimane was awarded the Absa Premiership Coach of the

Season award.

Siphesihle Ndlovu, the Maritzburg United youngster took the Absa Premiership Young Player of the Season and Absa Premiership Midfielder of the Season awards.

His teamate, Lebogang Maboe, took both Nedbank Cup Most Improved Player of the Tournament and Player of the Tournament. The Ratanda-born midfielder walked away with R200,000 for his two trophies.

Bafana coach Baxter has announce squad for COSAFA Cup!

ONLY two overseas-based players have been called up – midfielder Gift Links (Alassiouty Sport – Egypt) and striker Luther Singh (SC Braga – Portugal).

Khulekani Kubheka, Wiseman Meyiwa and Lyle Foster – who were all in the Amajita squad that defeated Mozambique on Sunday, May 20 – have also been included.

Young PSL superstars Lebohang Maboe and Siphesihle Ndlovu (both of Maritzburg United) may have missed out on the Nedbank Cup win – after losing to Free State Stars in the final – but his performance this season has been rewarded with a call-up.

This comes at the back of the numerous nominations the players received for the PSL Awards.

The other PSL Awards winner called by Baxter included in the Senior Men’s National Team Siyanda Xulu (Defender of the Year) – with the latter making a return to the Bafana Bafana squad after a long absence.

Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg United have the most players in the squad – four each. Amakhosi has Bruce Bvuma, Siyabonga Ngezana, Meyiwa and Ryan Moon, while Ndlovu, Xulu, Lebo Maboe and Fortune Makaringe are all from United.

Training has begun in Polokwane since Sunday, May 27. Many of the selected players attended the PSL Awards on Tuesday (see page 11) and returned back to the arms of Baxter.

Bafana has received a ‘bye’ in the first round and will only join the COSAFA CUP action in the quarterfinal stage when they face the Winner of Group A on Sunday, 3 June 2018. This means they got automatically sent forward to the last four.

Madagascar, Mozambique, Comoros and Seychelles are in Group A, while Botswana, Angola, Mauritius and Malawi make up Group B. The matches will be played at three venues – Old Peter Mokaba Stadium and Seshego Stadium.

The final takes place on Sunday, 9 June at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Still the President of SAFA! DR. DANNY JORDAN retains his position as the president of the South African Football Association (SAFA) during the elective of the national soccer body on Saturday, May 26.

Dr. Jordaan has been

re-elected in the SAFA hot seat by a margin of 95.12%. He received 234 of 246 votes.

Former referee Ace Ncobo withdrawn his candidature for SAFA presidency in the last minute, hours before the elections would

take place, which meant that Jordaan went into ballot box unopposed.

He will lead the organization for the next five years.The Electoral Committee conducted the SAFA Elections at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
