Applications for 2018 financial aid open, ekasi!

On Tuesday, August 1 the announcement was made during a media briefing that applications for financial aid for all learners, who wish to enter the postschool system and students, who do not have financial assistance to continue their studies in 2018 academic year, have officially opened.

The centre was also declared one of 50 Local Youth Offices (LYO) to accept NSFAS applications for funding.

By Stephen Seakgwe Actor Dumi Masilela spent the night fighting for his life in hospital after being shot during an attempted hijacking in Tembisa on Wednesday night (August 2).

The Rhythm City actor was parked on a road in the area with a friend when they were approached by a black jeep. They tried to flee but a chase ensued.

“They tried to drive off but the black jeep followed and the occu-

pants opened fire. He (Masilela) was shot in the upper body‚” police spokesperson Kay Makhubele told media.

His friend who was in the car with him rushed the actor to hospital where he spent the night fighting for his life. Officials confirmed he died this morning.

The actor was married to Muvhango actress Simphiwe Ngema and the two had become media darlings as their romance blossomed.

JEEP FROM DAVEYTON USED IN MASILELA HIJACKING ATTEMPT IS RECOVERED! On Wednesday morning (August 3), The EMPD Security & Loss Control Unit members reacted swiftly to a message about a hijacked Jeep Wrangler.

Within thirty-minutes the hijacked Jeep was tracked to Ebony Park where it was found abandoned.

“Around 11 p.m. last night in Daveyton, the owner of a Jeep Wrangler was hijacked of his vehicle and pistol-whipped so severely that he ended up in hospital.

Information later emerged that the hijackers of the Jeep attempted to hijack a white

VW Golf 7 with two occupants in Tembisa.

The attackers shot at the VW Golf as the driver made a dash for safety but was unfortunately hit in the upper body. The wounded driver’s friend took over the wheel and rushed to hospital where the friend unfortunately succumbed to his injury,” said Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago in a statement.

The perpetrators of this crime are still at large. In-depth police investigations are underway to apprehend the persons responsible for this crime.

Police have reassured the family and friends of slain actor Dumi Masilela that they will do everything in their power to bring the perpetrators to book.

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula said he was concerned about the number of firearms that are being circulated in South Africa.

“We will not give up our country to criminals. We will go pound for pound, but we want to assure criminals that the police will be victorious. Our mandate is simple; maintain law and order and protect South Africans,” said Minister Mbalula.

Mbalula went on to express his condolences to the Rhythm City family, Masilela’s supporters, friends, family and his wife Simphiwe Ngema.

In a turn of events that transpired at the Roodeport Magistrates court on Tuesday August 1, Brickz was denied bail.

The kwaito star, whose real name is Sipho Charles Ndlovu was found guilty of the rape of a 16 year old girl at his Ruimsig residence in the year 2013.

Magistrate John Baloyi who was responsible for proceedings during the case reportedly believed that granted bail, the convicted kwaito star would attempt to flee.

In the last four years the life of Brickz seems to be spiralling out of control.

In the year 2013 a case of rape was opened against him where he was imminently arrested, in the following year, 2014, the trial came to a temporary halt due to further investigations which were due to be conducted. In 2015 it was revealed that his baby mama was in fact the one responsible for helping the 16 year old girl lay charges against Brickz.

In 2017 he allegedly confessed to succumbing to alcohol and drug abuse which took its toll on his life on television, in an interview he said “When I got into the industry I was still mourning, I lost my mom. I lost my gran.

So I lost two of the most important people in my life, and when the money started rolling in, you never know what to do with it, really.”

On July 7 the words “JUDGEMENT DAY” were seen on his Twitter profile, subsequently followed by 3333 replies, 2323 retweets and 2020 likes.

Malema vs Shaik ‘war’ continues!

These are the latest of a bitter exchange of piercing words in the simmering feud between Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and convicted fraudster and businessman Shabir Shaik.

The war of words reportedly started on 29 July 2017 at the EFF’s 4th Anniversary celebration in Durban, KwaZulu Natal.

It is alleged that Malema openly criticised and rebuked the inferior treatment of local African people by Indian business owners – his comments would spark controversy that lead businessman and former Jacob Zuma-ally Shabir Shaik calling the EFF leader a “misinformed fool” and emphasising that the average citizen knows their rights.

The mounting tension would then prompt Malema to draw comparisons by likening Indian shop-owners to former oppressors of the Apartheid regime in Afrikaners.

The EFF was quick to jump to their leader’s defence on the matter and would even accuse Shaik, who was granted medical parole in 2009 following his fraud charges in 2005 of “faking terminal illness” in order to evade jail time.

The egocentric pair in Shaik and Malema appear to be in no mood to call it truce anytime soon.

What GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND...

O

ne day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac car was still sputtering when he approached her.

Even with the smile on his face, she looked worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry.

He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that chill which only fear can put in you.

He said, 'I'm here to help you, ma'am.

Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.'

Well, all she had was a flat tyre, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tyre. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.

As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from Zeerust and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid.

Bryan just smiled as he closed her boot.

The lady asked how much she owed him.

Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the

awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past.

He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.

He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, 'And think of me.'

He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.

A few kilometers down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home.

It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her.

The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude.

The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger.

Then she remembered Bryan ..

After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred Rand note. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hun-

dred , but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin.

There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: 'You don't owe me anything. I have been there too.

Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.'

Under the napkin were four more R100.

Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day.

That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard....

She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, 'Everything's going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.'

There is an old saying... 'What goes around comes around.'

First, students can log onto the NSFAS website

(www.nsfas.org.za), where they will be asked to register and create an account in one simple step, and then proceed to complete the online application form.

Second, they can walk to any NYDA branch or LYO in their region, where they will be assisted to complete and submit a manual application.

Applicants will need to have certified copies of supporting documents ready before they start the application process, whether applying online or manually.

For the 2017 academic year, NSFAS has funded at least 524 950 students, with 246 640 at the 50 Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and 278 310 students at 26 public universities.

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) Acting Executive Officer Lerato Nage made the announcement during a media briefing on Tuesday (August 1) at Ratanda in Heidelberg.

“From August 1st, NSFAS will accept applications from anyone who qualifies to enter the post-school education system but cannot afford to finance their studies. Applications will be opened from the 1 August to 30 November 2017,” said Nage.

He said the partnership will allow NSFAS to make use of the 15 NYDA branches nationwide, as well as the more than 50 Local Youth Offices (LYO) to accept NSFAS applications for funding. These local youth offices are situated within local government facilities in all nine provinces, Nage said.

He added that the decision to invite the NYDA to help with applications campaign was influenced by the knowledge that many young people cannot access or use internet facilities, and will require a walk-in centres, where they can be assisted to complete their application for funding form.

“The partnership between us and the NYDA has created short term employment for 115 previously unemployed young graduates, who come from all nine provinces across the country. Together with the NYDA, we have finalised the recruitment of these young people, who will work as assistant workers.

“Their responsibility will be to welcome walk-in applicants at all these centres, assist them with enquiries and the completion of the application form, its submission and the issuing of bar coded stickers to generate the application’s reference number. These interns have been professionally trained and equipped with the knowledge they require to assist the applicants,” Nage explained.

Throughout the applications period, NSFAS will be running public awareness campaigns in rural communities to make sure that the message reaches the most rural parts of the country.

Nage said that NSFAS takes particular interest in learners who live in rural villages, where there is widespread lack of resources and facilities.

Nage said the scheme anticipates to receive an even greater number of applications this year, for the 2018 academic cycle.

“We have worked behind the scenes to strengthen and improve our internal systems and capacity to be able to deal with the high volumes of applications that we are expecting,” he said.

He called on all Grade 12 learners, including out-of-school young people, unemployed young people, public university and TVET college students not currently funded by NSFAS, and who will need financial support in 2018, to start submitting their applications.

Before applying you should have decided which course they want to study and at which public university/TVET college. You will need to select these choices in the application form.

You must make sure they have electronic (and certified copies) of the following: • Your South African identity document/card or, an unabridged birth certificate • IDs of parents and/or guardian (or death certificate where applicable) • IDs of each person living with you in your home • Pay advice/letter of employment/pension advice (not older than three months) • Please download the consent form and fill it in with your parent/guardian’s signatures.

• Applications without a consent form that is signed by all people whose incomes have been declared in the application will not be accepted, and will be considered.

• If you have a disability, please download the Disability Annexure A and fill it in.

When you provide your cell phone number on the application form, make sure it works and do not change it afterwards, as NSFAS will use it to communicate with you during and after the application process. Do not provide someone else's cell phone number as your contact number.

You will also need an email address. If you do not have an email address, you can easily create an email address online (an option is provided to assist in creating an email address).

You must not apply if:

INGOMA MUSIC & DANCE AUDITIONS FIND THE BEST!

The theatre was abuzz with arts groups from all over Gauteng. The response this year was overwhelming, with interest from as far afield as Northern Cape, Free State and surrounding provinces. The show was a talent-filled spectacle that saw different performing arts genres go head-to-head in competition for a top spot in each category.

About fifty artistic groups across the five categories took part, which has raised the bar in terms of the show’s popularity and stature within the performing arts community.

Coming from less than twenty groups at its outset in 2015 and focusing specifically in Ekurhuleni, Ingoma has steadily grew, bringing different cultures, communities and artists together in celebration ofgrassroots arts at its best.

After a long day, and much deliberation from our adjudicators, there were groups who stood head and shoulders above everyone else, and they will now proceed to take part in the main show on the 6th of October at Tsakane Community hall.

The selected artists/groups will now form one production, to be directed by one of our reputable music producers and choreographers, to be performed in October.

The selected artists on the day were: 1. Duduza Sweet Melodies (traditional music) 2. Nokulunga Youth Group (traditional dance) 3. Via Duduza Youth club (modern dance) 4. Corroboration dance group (gumboot dance) The community is encouraged to come watch these artists do their thing in October, and we can guarantee that their performance will be nothing short of entertaining.

For a glued-to-your seat talent showcase that will be a blend of modern dance, gumboot dance, traditional music and dance, directed and written by seasoned producers, the community from all lengths and breadths of the Ekurhuleni region is invited to come witness it.

MathsTech students went to Batsogile Primary School in Soweto to commemorate Mandela Day by cleaning up and adding a fresh coat of paint to the school walls.

Indeed this province is the ‘home of champions’ after the defeat of University of Sport of South Africa (USSA) on penalties to claim the SAB League crown. Gauteng defended their SAB U21 National Championships title after coming back twice from behind in a highly entertaining final played at the Nike Centre in Soweto.

Following a 3-3 draw in regulation time, the title had to be decided in the lottery of penalties where Gauteng emerged 4-1 winners.

In an earlier match, Mpumalanga overcame a resilient Western Cape in the 3rd/4th place play off to finish in third place.

It was confirmed that two people died and at least 19 were seriously injured from being trampled on – this was after a number of football spectators forcefully attempted to enter the FNB stadium which featured the locally-renowned Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on Saturday 29th of July.

In the annual Carling Black Label Cup challenge between the 2 Soweto rivals, it was Bernard Parker who gave Kaizer Chiefs leverage by scoring the goal which saw them retain their title.

However – it was an event of tragedy that made the bigger headlines.

According to reports, a crowd of supporters, who allegedly did not possess tickets flocked to Gates J and K and started pushing the gate, and in their bid to gain entry into the stadium, trampled and ultimately killed two fellow supporters on the front line while critically injuring many others.

The Soweto giants did not hesitate in taking to social media platforms to publically offer messages of comfort and sympathy – with Chiefs posting on Twitter, “We are deeply affected by this incident and we would also like

to wish all those injured in the stampede a speedy recovery”, while Pirates remarked “We wish to express our profound condolences to the families who have lost loved ones. We supplicate that God gives you fortitude at this moment of extreme grief and pain.”

This unfortunate incident follows a couple of others which transpired in the Soweto derby on January 1991 where 42 people died at the Oppenheimer stadium and in April 2001 where 43 casualties were recorded at the Ellis Park stadium respectively.

Categories like the coveted Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Sport Team of the Year, Sport Journalist of the year & Sport Programme of the year are up for grabs. Each category finalist will receive R5,000 cash and the category winner will receive R150,000 cash. The Sport Personality of the year will receive R45,000.

Fans lament the these disastrous misfortunes with one Kaizer Chiefs fan ThabangMachaba saying “It is sad how the ‘beautiful game’ can turn so ugly sometimes, football is supposed to unite us peacefully” and Shay Noah, who is an Orlando Pirates fan emphasising – “I think the police and safety management officials should do more to ensure that everyone feels safe and that the environment is controlled when it comes to these big events.”

It is alleged that investigations into the stampede incident are officially underway, boosted by the Ministerial Commission of Enquiry by minister Thulas Nxesi.

August 8 is the last day for people of Gauteng to submit their nominations for the Gauteng Sports Awards, scheduled to take place at the West Rand district on October 1. MEC Faith Mazibuko has called on communities to choose their local champions of sport to be recognized and rewarded.
