Left: Sam Nzima’s iconic photograph of a dying Hector Pieterson (on June 16, 1976 during the Soweto uprisings) became a symbol of resistance against apartheid and the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in black schools. The veteran photographer Sam Nzima died on Saturday evening (May 12) at Rob Ferreira hospital in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. Nzima’s son Thulani Nzima has confirmed that his father passed on at a hospital in Mbombela. Sam Nzima’s legendary picture was first published in the South African black newspaper, The World. Although this image is said to have generated over R27 million, he saw very little of it because he didn’t own the copyright until 1998. He also says this picture ruined his life.
