An award ceremony was held to honour the companies that take the lead in youth employment and empowerment, honours given by Finance/Economic Development & ICT MMC Xhakaza and HOD of Ecomomic Development in Ekurhuleni Caiphus Chauke (pictured).

Young people of Ekurhuleni filled the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg to its capacity when they attended the three-day Career Expo.

The City of Ekurhuleni took the Wednesday of July 05 to Friday, July 07 to present various career opportunities and sound advice to many young people who are still confused on what career path to follow.

Exhibition stands from institutions of learning, government and the private sector were ready to serve the thousands of Ekurhuleni-based youth. Gauteng’s Tshepo 1 Million campaign and Lulaway were the drawcards at the exhibitions, attracting hundreds of young people to submit their CVs and application forms to be beneficiaries of employment opportunities.

The expo ensured that key information on bursaries, learnership and internship programmes are shared to empower the unemployed youth. Many young people got an opportunity to register their CVs on the city’s unemployed youth database.

WORDS OF FAITH The principle of ASK (ask, seek and knock).

“Matthew 7:7 ask it will be given to you, seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you” The world is full of demoralized, disappointed and discouraged people, mainly caused by the expectations that were not met.

Disappointment occurs at the point of our expectations, when we plan for our goals we normally set a time - frame, when our goals do not materialised at the expected time - frame predicted, it is then we become disappointed, discouraged and at times frustrated.

Unfortunately the disappointment do not sit well with some of us that we end up giving up on our goals, dreams and the journey of life itself. Some of the abuses that we encounter in our society today be it drug abuse or any other form of abuse is caused by the miscarriage of some of our dreams hence we blame ourselves, as a results we try to punish ourselves by a certain form of abuse.

Here the bible teaches us of what I call the ASK principle. An attitude of constantly asking the right questions, seeking for ways that will assist us in achieving our goals and knocking patiently on closed doors. Notice that we are not taught about how long or how much must we ask, seek and knock.

Nevertheless we are guaranteed that if we apply the ASK principle we will definitely see results i.e. answers to our quest in life, finding that which will set us up for greater things and doors that were close beginning to open.

Life needs people who will fight and stand for what they believe in, people who do not shy away from a battle that threatens their dreams.

Get up and knock at those doors because in due time you will find what you were seeking.

COP KILLER SUSPECT WANTED!

Police are in search of a man suspected to be involved in the murder of a police officer in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni. In the morning of Thursday, July 6 police reported incident and released the picture above.

New station commander of Heidelberg SAPS, Commander Amanda Dorothy Viljoen was officially welcomed to her new position on Monday, July 3. Lesedi Local Municipality MMC for Community Safety Katie Rakitla, Heidelberg CPF chairperson Flip Minnaar, Crime Stop Security boss Susan Bason and Colonel JHJ Maass attended the welcoming ceremony at the local police station. On the same day, Lieutenant Colonel Mohale was also welcomed as the new station commander of the Nigel SAPS.

PETROL PRICE DROPS AGAIN THIS JULY! The Department of Energy announced that a litre of 95 ULP and LRP will decrease by 68 cents while that of 93 Octane, ULP and LRP will come down by 69 cents a litre. Consumers will now pay R12.86 a litre as of Wednesday (July 5) when the new prices come into effect.

In addition, both grades of Diesel (0.05% sulphur) and 0.005% sulphur will come down by 60 cents while the price of Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale) will drop by 57 cents a litre.

The cost of Illuminating Paraffin (SMNRP) will decrease by 76 cents while the maximum

retail price of LP Gas (Liquid Petroleum) will come down by 92 cents.

Brent Crude Oil prices declined to a seven-month low and the U.S. crude settled at its cheapest level since September 2016, after increased supply from several key producers. -SANews

LESEDI RESPOND TO ERRORS IN LOADING ELECTRICITY PREPAID TOKEN!

In a statement released to local media on Tuesday, July 5 the Lesedi Local Municipality said it is implementing an exercise of upgrading its electricity sale system, migrating from company Ideal to Conlog system.

‘R.I.P JOHNNY MEKOA’ - govt.

On Tuesday, July 11 the mayor of Ekurhuleni led the proceedings of the funeral of world renowned trumpeter and head of the Gauteng Music Academy, Johnny Mekoa, who passed away on Monday, July 3.

“May your memoirs of him in happy times, fill the void of the loss,” said Mzwandile Masina.

The late Mekoa established the Gauteng Music Academy in 1994, which focused on teaching communities jazz, especially the youth.

In 2015, President Zuma conferred Mekoa the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, an award for South African citizens who have excelled in arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport.

“We have lost a remarkable musician and teacher, who contributed immensely to the music sector and selflessly imparted his musical knowledge and skills to aspirant musicians, especially children from poor backgrounds. May his legacy be an inspiration to others to be selfless teachers in different fields in order to build a better and prosperous South Africa. We wish to convey our sincere condolences to the Mekoa family and the music industry at large. May his soul rest in peace,” said President Zuma.

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa has also paid tribute to Mekoa.

“The nation has lost one of its most talented and selfless musical sons,” said Minister Mthethwa.

Ramakgobotla John Mekoa was born in Etwatwa, Benoni on 11 April 1945. He developed a passion for jazz music at an early age.

His dream was to study jazz and become a professional jazz musician. However, the colour of his skin was an impediment as far as the pursuit of his professed dream was concerned.

Mekoa founded and built a music school that focuses on developing young aspiring jazz musicians in South Africa.

In 1991 he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Music at the then University of Natal (now called University of KwaZulu-Natal), at the age of 41. He obtained a Fulbright Scholarship to study for a Master’s degree in Music at Indiana University in the United States. He returned home and established the Music Academy of Gauteng in 1994, which has become a centre of jazz excellence known worldwide.

According to a media statement released on Tuesday, July 4 the president has, in terms of the Special Investigating Unit and Special Tribunals Act, 1996, (Act No. 74 of 1996), signed a Proclamation authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate certain matters relating to the affairs of the Lesedi Local Municipality.

The SIU is a public entity with powers of investigation and litigation. Following the issuing of a presidential proclamation by the President, the SIU has powers to subpoena, search, seize and interrogate witnesses under oath.

The SIU can take civil action to correct any wrongdoing it uncovers in its investigations.

For example, the SIU can obtain a court order to compel a person to pay back the wrongful benefit received and thus recover the money for the state. The SIU also works with the department concerned to cancel contracts when proper procedures were not followed.

The entity has a role to play as one of the entities participating in South Africa’s multiagency approach to the fight against corruption and maladministration.

Corruption, malpractices and maladministration are among the most serious challenges facing State institutions in South Africa and the principal goal of the SIU is to reduce the levels of corruption, malpractice and maladministration.

MENS FORUM LAUNCHED IN BOY’S TOWN! GAUTENG LEGISLATURE VISIT AND ‘ADOPT’ YOUNG PRISONERS!

On Thursday, July 6 a delegation dominated by the male staff and members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, led by deputy speaker Uhuru Moiloa visited the Emthonjeni Correctional Centre in Baviaansport in Tshwane. \ The GPL Mens Forum is an initiative to provide some motivation and support to young male offenders, aged between 13 and 17 years, incarcerated for various crimes to reform and receive counselling for a day.

This is part of the GPL’s mandate of Public Participation, where awareness and interaction on the processes of the provincial parliament.

“As men, we want to have a conversation with you. We want to play a role as your fathers and uncles, but not replacing your original parents,” stressed the deputy speaker. He said that life has bought these youngsters to this place, not to isolate them from society but for them to learn a lesson not to do the offence again.

“We come to you with bare hands, having no silver and gold on us. We come to you as your brothers, fathers and uncles to visit you,” said the deputy speaker Moiloa when he opened his message of motivation. He said that they also came to plead guilty of not playing their roles as male role models in their lives.

The young inmates were grouped up in sets of two to six and linked to a GPL male mentor, where they actively interacted amongst each other. Issues like behavioural and moral regeneration were the topics within the groups, with some mentors giving advice on helping the young offenders re-integrate back to their communities.

Deputy speaker emphasized that although people like Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Govan Mbeki who were arrested for many years in Robben Island by the Apartheid government; these liberation struggle heroes still had the heart to continue the fight for freedom for the people. According to Moiloa, he as well met the prison bars at a tender age the age of 15 years old, saying that he was involved in ‘juvenile delinquencies.’

The honourable deputy speaker received a crafty gift from the correctional centre, and the legislature delegation in return handed journals and GPL-branded clothing to both the officials and inmates. In these special journals, the mentors encouraged the youngsters to always refer to the quote “Everything that is done in the world is done by hope” engraved on the cover, when they think of their aspirations beyond their confinement.

Alpha Community Trauma Centre has opened its doors to the community, aimed to serve the residents around Heideleberg and the Lesedi municipality. During Youth Day celebrations last month, the centre hosted an event where they donated stationery to needy kids in Ratanda.

The centre assists abused women, children and rape victims – by giving counselling and life skills to support the victims of crime. Alpha Trauma Centre also offers marriage counselling. The NPO has recently introduced an ‘Adult Diversion Programme’ to help convicted offenders to reform themselves

and restore their place in society. Trauma services can also be accessed at police stations, where the Alpha Trauma Centre volunteers can be called to give assistance. Located in central Heidelberg at the P.G Centre, is open on weekdays from 9h30 to 16h00, closing 13h00 on Fridays. Alpha Trauma Centre welcomes volunteers with expertise. They are committed to changing lives, bringing hope where there was only despair.

he Mapepeza team joined over 1600 journalists to report the highly acclaimed National Policy Conference of the ANC (African National Congress), hosted in Johannesburg’s Nasrec Expo Centre. This six day meeting of the country’s branch leadership and delegates from alliance organizations set the tone ahead of the National Elective Congress in December.

ANC President Jacob Zuma delivered the opening and closing addresses. On the first day, he said the party will come out of the conference stronger and more united. “Let us not be defeatist in our discussions. Solutions can be found, and must be found to the challenges facing our movement,” he said to the comrades.

Ministers, Members of Parliament, mayors, councillors and officials from various government and sector organizations made up the list of delegates who attended the conference.

The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is divided into different portfolio committees that carry out the objectives and mandates set out in the policies. Each chairperson of these committees had an opportunity to address the media on the resolutions and discussions of their plenary sessions.

The portfolio committees that were represented: Communication and the Battle of Ideas; Education, Science & Technology and Health; Socio-economic Transformation; International Relations; Legislature and Governance; Organizational Renewal; Peace and Stability; Political Education and Strategy & Tactics.

Policy discussion documents were used as reference for both the delegates and the media.

This conference is meant to review and refine these policies in order for the aspirations of the ANC’s cause for ‘National Democratic Revolution’ can be achieved. It has been sighted that frameworks around radical socioeconomic transformation, land expropriation and institutional corruption have to be made stronger as the ANC-led government implements the programme to fight the ‘triple-challenges’ (poverty, unemployment and inequality) called the National Development Plan (NDP).

At the end of the 5th National Policy Conference, indeed the delegates seemed more in tune than when they arrived six days earlier.

The president was proud to report to the world that “this conference discussed all important issues facing the ANC and the country in a disciplined manner befitting the stature of our movement as the leader of society.”

“Everyone agrees that this Policy Conference has been a watershed in the arena of the festival of ideas. Different ideas were articulated and debated. Various formulations were presented and tested so that the movement can come out of this Conference with a common perspective on all issues that were being deliberated upon. All delegates and participants here demonstrated deep understanding that the ANC plays a central role in the betterment of the lives of our people, and that the ANC still remains the strategic centre of power,” he said in his closing remarks on Wednesday July 5.

Delegates and invited members of the public were treated to a daily session of mediafriendly breakfasts and gala dinners, sponsored by the ANC’s Progressive Business Forum (PBF). We live in exciting times. The world is changing rapidly, with technology leading this change. But for some, the pace is too fast, too much and they risk being left behind. For our youth to realise their potential, they need to be exposed to the endless possibilities available to them as entrepreneurs and we need to provide them with the necessary skills and tools to succeed.

This year, the programme will focus on social entrepreneurship, where learners will be askedto find innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social and environmental problems, centred around the concept of Seeking Opportunity, Connecting People and Creating Sustainable Value. Just as entrepreneurs change the face of business, social entrepreneurs act as the change agents for society, seizing opportunities others miss to improve systems, invent new approaches and create solutions to change society for the better.

This is what the Step up 2 a Start up IV programme is all about.

Young people tapping into existing knowledge available in order to learn, grow and build on their skillset. Starting on 12 August 2017, learners in grades 9 - 11 will begin their journey into the world of entrepreneurship through the movie titled “Vukuzenzele”, which will be screened at 15 Ster-Kinekor cinemas nationwide over a period of five weeks.

Each learner will receive a Toolkit which will assist them in implementing the skills learnt through this educational film, and allow them to develop their own business ideas and models.

On Thursday July 6th, the 4th yearof this exciting programme was launched at The Ballroom in Montecasino with special addresses

by Lindiwe Zulu, Minister of Small Business Development, David Makhura, Premier of Gauteng, and last but certainly not least, an eye-opening address by international businessman and author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, Robert Kiyosaki.

The evening was attended by over 300 guests, including the programme’s sponsors, government officials, media and other supporting parties. Gauteng Premier David Makhura and minister of Small Business Development Lindiwe Zulu attended the launch.

As the programme enters its second phase, learners will be given the opportunity to compete in an entrepreneurial competition by submitting their business model canvasses for assessment and adjudication by a panel of industry professionals and sponsors.

During this process, at least 9 top business models will be identified and the teams responsible will be invited to attend a boot camp in Johannesburg. This boot camp will hone and polish participants’ skills as they start to think more about developing and starting their businesses based on the ideas they submitted.

The boot camp concludes with a prestigious Gala Dinner& Awards ceremony.
