TSHEPO 1 MILLION GAUTENG GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIPS TO EMPOWER YOUTH!

Premier David Makhura announced partnerships with international and local companies such as Coca Cola, Hollard, Gijima, Barclays Africa, Shanduka Black Umbrellas and Microsoft SA (amongst others) for youth empowerment.

The date has been set for June 15th for the official partnership signing ceremony.

He also made the call to media company managers that were there and they responded with the same spirit of support for the Tshepo 1 Million. “The invitation is still open to all companies and media houses that want to join us,” said Makhura.

During his speech, Premier Makhura said people must move from looking for tender opportunities to entering the valuechain of the mainstream economy, even on a global scale. He also said to the partners that Radical Economic Transformation is not a swear word. “Radical Economic Transformation is something we can do together, as partners, creating an inclusive economy,” said the Gauteng premier.

Gauteng Government has set aside R6 Billion towards suppliers and vendors that own small and medium businesses in the townships. Youth, women and people with disabilities are prioritized by law – the NDP (National Development Plan).

“Youth unemployment is the most acute and primary economic problem of our time. In Gauteng, we currently have about 2.7 million young people of working age, who are not in education and employment.

“Two years after we launched Tshepo 500 000, we reached 354 633 young people. That is when we decided to increase our target to empower one million young people by 2019,” said the Premier.

He said Tshepo One Million is aimed at providing opportunities to youth, especially those in townships who are confronted by lack of skills and limited opportunities.

Besides Mapepeza, other media houses that committed to the Tshepo 1 Million programme are Kaya FM, SABC, Times Media and YFM. Soweto restaurant owner, Sakhumzi Maqubela also praised the partnerships that are made through empower disadvantaged black youth.

Microsoft SA’s Siya Madyibi said the company would provide one million young people with training opportunities in digital skills. This partnership commits to a mass-scale deployment of the Microsoft Digital Literacy and Virtual Academy Platform.

The training will be run through the Tshepo One Million learning lab network attached to local libraries, based on the Massive Open Online Varsity system piloted by the City of Johannesburg.

“At least one million young residents of Gauteng will be trained in basic proficiency as users of the most current versions of Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel. This training will increase young jobseekers’ chances of employability,” said Madyibi.

This forms part of Gauteng’s flagship programme for youth empowerment, Tshepo 1 Million aimed at providing opportunities to youth in townships who are confronted by lack of skills and limited opportunities.

The Tshepo 1 Million initiative was first launched in 2014 with the intention to empower 500 000 young people through skills training and entrepreneurship development.

Coca-Cola Public Affairs and Communication Director, Tshidi Ramogase, said her company commits to explore a micro-franchise programme, executing last-mile delivery and logistics for designated areas within Gauteng, operating as part of the Coca-Cola value chain.

Three killed in a crash involving a Taxi and a Truck!

Two front passengers and a Taxi driver we declared dead on scene by paramedics after the crash between minibus Taxi and an Articulating truck on the R21 freeway south bound before East Rand Mall in Boksburg on May 15.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services swiftly responded out to the scene and on arrival, three front patients were still trapped inside the taxi wreckage.

Eight passengers sustained critical injuries of which one was airlifted to Charlotte Maxeke hospital for further medical care while the others were road transported to Glenwood hospital, Sunshine hospital and Tambo Memorial hospital respectively by ambulances from various ambulance services including Municipality. The other last three patients sustained serious but stable injuries were also road transported to various other medical facilities across the City.

The actual cause of accident is still undetermined and Metro-Police Officers from the City of Ekurhuleni commenced with their on scene investigations.

SOUTH AFRICANS have been warned not to open any unknown emails and to urgently update their security software as a global cyber ransom attack spread on Friday (May 12).

Friday's global cyber-attack has affected more than 200 000 victims in 150 countries and regions, Europol chief Rob Wainwright said.

Hackers reportedly used a tool known as Eternal Blue and a malicious software called WannaCry to lock users' computers and to demand a payment for the decryption.

The global cyber-attack has so far swept across more than 100 countries including the United States, Britain, Germany and China. Cyber security experts said it could be the biggest cyberattack of its kind ever.

"Many of those victims were businesses, including large corporations. The global reach is unprecedented," Wainwright said in an interview with Britain's ITV. Wainwright said he was concerned that the numbers of those affected would continue to rise when people returned to work on Monday morning, May 14.

"We're in the face of an escalating threat, the numbers are going up," he said, adding that the current attack was unprecedented.

Wainwright told ITV that the world faced an escalating threat, and there was concern about the level of potential attacks on Monday morning.

Wainwright warned the healthcare sector "in many countries" was particularly vulnerable, but that all organizations should ensure they prioritise cyber security and update their systems.

The virus took control of users' files, demanding payments.

Russia and Britain were among the worst hit countries.

Dozens of Russian public institutions including the Bank of Russia said on Saturday that they have thwarted a massive cyberattack and prevented vital data loss.

The central bank's security and information protection division, responsible for monitoring computer attacks in the credit and financial sphere, has registered massive spread of malicious programs, but no instances of compromise were detected, said the Bank of Russia, quoted by Sputnik, a major media outlet in Russia

The Russian Interior Ministry and Health Ministry also said earlier in the day that they have "repelled" such attacks as the virus was promptly detected and localized, according to Russian news agencies.

Britain's official emergency committee, known as Cobra, met in London on Saturday afternoon to discuss the cyber-attack that has caused widespread disruption to the country's National Health Service (NHS).

Around 45 NHS organisations in England and Scotland, including hospitals, family doctor surgeries, and health services, were hit in the cyber-attack which prevented doctors, nurses and staff from accessing vital patient information.

However, Wainwright said Europol was working on the basis that the cyber-attack was carried out by criminals rather than terrorists, but noted that "remarkably few" payments had been made so far.

"Most people are not paying this, so there are not a lot of money being made with this by criminal organisations so far," he said.

MAKAUSE ARE PART CITY’S OF THE PLANS!

Following the unrests by the Makause Informal Settlement residents, Ekurhuleni wishes to assure residents of the area that a process to reallocate them to an identified land is underway as per the municipal plans.

The first group of 1000 residents of Makause will be relocated to an identified land in Germiston Extension 46 in line with the municipal schedule. The reallocation will commence in July.

The remaining residents will benefit from the city’s Re-blocking Programme, which is aimed at reconfiguring the current layout of informal settlements and re-organising the ground plane to optimally utilise space to promote the health, safety and well-being of households, with a focus on promoting accelerated service delivery to informal settlements.

Ekurhuleni’s Member of Mayoral Committee for Human Settlement Cllr Lesiba Mpya has reassured residents of Makause during his visit that improving the living conditions of the people of Makause is at the top of the city’s agenda.

“The identified land in Germiston Extension 46 will be equipped with amenities such as water and sanitation system, roads and electricity connection,” said MMC Mpya.

Currently services provided to Makause by the City include; Waste removal services, health services from New Wannenburg Clinic, prevention of land invasion, disaster management, grading of informal sports fields, conduct crowd management through EMPD, chemical toilets and water stand pipes.

Weekly SAPS Reports: BENONI TEENAGE THUGS STOPPED IN BENONI. ONE DEAD, TWO ARRESTED! For several months, learners from mostly ‘Model C’ High Schools in Benoni had been subjected to terror by a gang of teenage boys allegedly from Daveyton and Etwatwa robbing them of cellphones, cash and other valuables.

On Friday afternoon, May 19 one of these teenage gangsters was shot dead. His accomplice was also arrested by the metro police officers and the third suspect, found with a knife hidden, was apprehended by learners and the principal of Wentworth high school.

The incident and arrests happened at Bunyan Road near the N12 freeway in Benoni.

The EMPD Benoni Precinct officers received information that the supposed gang was sighted on Bunyan Road and responded swiftly. Two suspects were approached by the officers and one of them pointed what was described as a revolver at the officer. The armed suspect’s accomplice was shot dead and the one who pointed the firearm managed to evade arrest.

The deceased suspect was aged 17 and the two who were arrested are reported to be 16 years of age. Charges of attempted robbery were laid at Benoni police station against the arrestees and they have appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on May 22 .

MAN FATALLY SHOT DEAD, SUSPECT WANTED!

Duduza Police opened a Murder case after a 35 year old man was found lying dead at the Driemanskap plots, northern side of Heidelberg on Tuesday night, May 23.

Police receive a complaint of shooting next to old Driemanskap railway train station and quickly responded.

On police arrival at the scene, they found a man lying in a pool of blood with about seven bullet wounds on his body. The victim was certified dead by paramedics.

Suspect is unknown and the motive of the shooting is unknown.

Slo’ Foot King Brothers jazz band founder Samuel Tshiyembe, died on Friday May 12 at the Bhisho Hospital. It was reported that he started getting sick last year February after the death of his wife.

Slo' Foot King Brothers is one of the oldest African jazz music groups that has dazzled and mesmerised its audiences since 1953. The band's unique style, rhythm and lyrics are a family affair, fitting both the young and old, men and women alike.

The music bug bit Tshiyembe at an early age when he fell in love with playing the guitar,

and decided to make one for himself using a five-litre container, a plank, strings and wooden plugs. He later joined the jazz band, African Melodies. In those days he backed musicians such as the Manhattan Brothers of Johannesburg and Dorothy Masuku. It was his experience with the Manhattan Brothers that greatly influenced Tshiyembe. On his return to King William’s Town in 1952, he formed the jazz band Slo’ Foot King Brothers in 1953.

Tshiyembe will be laid to rest on May 27 in Zwelitsha.

Kwa-Thema resident Maggie Hlaza, 76 years old, finally received her title deed from Government.

On Wednesday morning, May 24, MEC for Gauteng Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile and the City of Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Cllr Mzwandile Masina launched the roll-out of title deeds distribution campaign, where more than 300 title

deeds were handed over to the residents of Etwatwa.

The purpose of the tittle deeds roll out launch is to deal with title deeds backlogs in the province and this is part of government’s plan to eliminate the backlogs for pre and post 1994 tittle deeds.

Government met residents at the Etwatwa Ext 9, Sports ground next to Etwatwa Customer Care Centre.

SAMSUNG LAUNCHES TOP ENGINEERING ACADEMY AT GERT SIBANDE COLLEGE!

Samsung Electronics launched and handed over a Samsung Engineering Academy to Gert Sibande TVET College, as part of the company’s corporate citizenship drive on Monday, May 22 at Skills Academy and Artisan Development Centre in Standerton.

The celebratory launch and hand-over ceremony was attended by many dignitaries including the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Honourable Mduduzi Manana, President of Samsung SA, Sung Yoon and the college CEO, Nick Balkrishen.

The Gert Sibande (GS) Samsung Engineering Academy is an initiative that resulted from a partnership between Samsung Electronics South Africa (SSA), merSETA, GertSibande TVET College, MICT-SETA and the Department of Higher Education and Training. This public-private alliance strives to reduce poverty and dependency by providing the youth from South Africa’s underprivileged communities an opportunity to acquire engineering skills and tackle the shortage of technical and engineering skills in the Province of Mpumalanga, and ultimately South Africa.

This partnership was formed in attempts to provide the youth with access to learning facilities with the vision of transferring skills and creating employability for the Country’s youth.

Samsung Electronics also understands that in order to create a sustainable future, it is vital to invest in education, in South Africa.The Academy will provide the youth with an opportunity to be up skilled in engineering sciences, thus improving their chances of employment or better; to start their own businesses and grow their respective communities.

According to the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Honorable Mduduzi Manana, an initiative such as this one is a key component of the National Strategy in ensuring that a labour force is developed to fulfil the Government’s vision of developing the manufacturing sector. “The manufacturing sector is by its nature labour intensive and should provide more job opportunities for our youth, whilst at the same time, building the production capacity of the country,” said Minister Manana.The Deputy Minister was elated with this GSC SAMSUNG project, which was the first of its kind in Mpumalanga, as it spoke to the importance of forging closer partnerships with industry, which is the cornerstone of the Department’s White Paper on Post School Education, which calls for the TVET sector to develop partnerships with industry to ensure labour market relevance.

The Engineering academy was designed and equipped by Samsung according to international standards. Students who qualify at the academy can work at any of Samsung’s service centres

across the world. Consequently, students from the GS SAMSUNG Engineering Academy will be given an opportunity to compete for employment opportunities at any one of Samsung’s various service centers across the country and internationally, where they will put the skills learned at the academy to practical use for Samsung customers. Currently, Samsung has employed over 100 graduates from academies similar to this one.

According to Samsung Electronics President for South and Southern Africa, Mr. Sung Yoon, the programme will provide students with the necessary engineering acumen and Samsung will help give the graduates a head start in the workplace, making them attractive recruits for Samsung, Samsung partners and other industry players.

“This initiative strives to transform communities through education and skills development and in return, open up skilled, well-paying job opportunities for individuals and by tapping into the youth’s interest in electronics.

Samsung will equip underprivileged students attending government technical schools with the skills and practical experience required to make them competitive in the job market”, said Mr Yoon.

The college CEO, Mr Nick Balkrishen was delighted with the initiative by Samsung. In his welcome address, he emphasized the importance of the college providing training that is relevant and responsive to the needs of the labor market. He added that “We are excited about the launch of this Gert Sibande SAMSUNG Engineering Academy as it will extend the basket of programs offered by the Gert Sibande Skills Academy.

This academy will provide training that will feed directly into the labor market”. CEO Balkrishen indicated that partnerships, such as this one with Samsung, ensures that training in scarce skills such as refrigeration and air conditioning, repairs to house-hold appliances and cell phones benefits the community greatly.

The CEO concluded by saying “We remain indebted to Samsung for providing this opportunity to us. “As a college, we are committed to utilize the GS SAMSUNG Engineering Academy optimally for the benefit of the community, especially the unemployed”.

The College Council representative, Mr Marthinus Loots, delivered a message of appreciation on behalf of the College Council. “Our gratitude goes to Mr Sung Yoon and your team for the establishment of the Samsung Engineering Academy and incubation hub,” said Mr Loots. He continued to state that the Academy will bring transformation and empowerment to the youth of the Gert Sibande Region and beyond.

A focal point of this year’s Africa Month programme is to create discussion platforms for South Africans, in particular local communities, to engage in conversation within the broader theme of decolonisation.

This year Africa Month celebrations coincide with the centenary of struggle stalwart Oliver Reginald Tambo who epitomised the struggle for liberation. Tambo was instrumental in rallying support, assistance and solidarity against the oppression of colonialism and apartheid on the continent.

WELFARE TO WORK PROGRAMME

The W2WP is an initiative by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Social Development that ultimately seeks to reduce the dependency of young individuals on the welfare system.

This is done by placing beneficiaries of various types of grants through a 3-year skills training programme that encompasses experiential work placements, artisans skills training, as well as academic studying.

The programme was launched in 2013; and in its current format, specifically targets young mothers between the ages of 18 and 25 who are recipients of social grants.

The programme is entirely sponsored by the Department of Social Development, and is being implemented in partnership with an external service provider and with Godisang Development as the programme administrator.

Novus Holdings’ Future Foundations initiative aims to give ‘a hand up, not a hand-out’ to its beneficiaries by empowering them to grow independently, specifically through education and skills development.

With this in mind, Paarl Coldset Johannesburg, which forms part of the Coldset printing division of Novus Holdings, has invested R 70 000 in the Community Crisis Centre in Reiger Park, Gauteng.

This investment will contribute towards the You Only Live Once (YOLO) project, which aims to thoroughly educate young people, aged 15-24 years old, about HIV/AIDS and how to avoid risky sexual behaviour.

“The YOLO project is not just about doing talks at schools. The project aims to reach 126 individuals by building relationships with them over a period of time, ensuring that they really understand how HIV/AIDS spreads, how they can prevent being infected and how they can help raise awareness amongst their friends too. The Manufacturing Indaba: Growing South African manufacturing Going into its fourth year, the annual Manufacturing Indaba is fast approaching and, with the country heavily focussed on growth solutions and the impact future trends will have on the manufacturing sector in South Africa, participants eagerly plan for two remarkable days, hosted at Emperors Palace from the 27 to 28 June 2017.

Bafana squad named to face Nigeria!

New Bafana Bafana head coach Stuart Baxter has named his 25man squad to face Nigeria in the opening match of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The clash takes place on Saturday, 10 June 2017 at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo State, Nigeria. Kickoff is at 17h00.

Baxter has kept a good number of players that did duty against Guinea-Bissau and Angola in back-to-back friendly international matches in March.

Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Bongani Zungu and Tokelo Rantie make a welcome return to the national team. Aubrey Ngoma of Cape Town City has also been called up.

“I am quite pleased with the squad we have assembled. We have a small element of development with a couple of young players. We also have some players who are returning to the squad, the likes of Zungu and Rantie.

KWA-THEMA police on Friday, May 19 held a Primary School Sports Against Crime soccer tournament at the Kwa-Thema stadium.

Sector 1 Commander Cst. Percy Modikoe, former Kaizer Chiefs striker and Banyana Banyana Head Coach Mr Joseph Mkhonzana Skeshekeshe Mkhonza, Sector 1 Crime Forum Chairperson Mrs Elizabeth Mkhwebane, CPF Chairperson Mr Oupa Zero Mabiletsi together with Primary Schools Representatives arranged the Tournament.

It also included safety awareness campaigns at the local schools who participated.

The main objective was to raise awareness in educating children away from engaging in criminal activities.

It is also made to warn kids on human trafficking, sexual assaults and rapes of young girls.

May is Child Protection Month, so children must be sensitized of their safety and to abstain from relating with strangers to avoid or prevent child stealing, kidnapping and rapes.

Former Chiefs striker Mhkonza stressed that children need to be taken out of the street by engaging and encouraging them to participate in sporting activities and other life

skills programmes.

He further indicated that children need to be taught responsibility whilst they are still young so that they will be future leaders.

Colonel Mareketle Malapane, Station Commander of Kwa-Thema SAPS thanked all participants in the tournament, schools management for allowing children to participate as well as parents for permitting their children to take part.

The tournament was won by Fred Habedi Primary School. Players and Officials were awarded a trophy and gold medals.
