DIPALESENG MUNICIPALITY ENSURES SIYATHEMBA RESIDENTS GETS WATER!

Residents of certain parts of Siyathemba in Balfour, particularly the old stands of Siyathemba Proper have for years been affected by water anomalies like unavailability of water during some hours of the day.

Those very same residents are now thrilled at the sight of clean water that readily flows from their taps at any time of the day, seven days a week.

The Executive Mayor, Cllr Molato D Khanye, is also pleased with the progress made and commented by saying “Access to clean drinking water is a basic human right which the municipality has and will continue to uphold”.

The municipality enlisted the services of a contractor by the name of Solum Civils from Witbank to ascertain what could be the cause of the water shortage in the affected areas at certain points of time during the day or

night. Pilot holes were used to investigate this strange anomaly which led to the discovery of one dead line which was connected to the line.

It was also discovered that there was too much pressure downstream towards Mandela section and that that section also consumed so much water that other higher located areas ended up not having enough feed.

This then necessitated the installation of a high pressure pipe to feed higher laying areas of Siyathemba Proper and connected the dead line to the high pressure line.

Duduza SAPS has released a warning to residents about the alarming high number of cases reported for contact and property related crimes.

Contact crimes are crimes perpetrated person on person, such as robbery, assault, rape and murder.

EMPD DISCOVER ILLEGAL AIRTIME WITH MACHINES VALUED AT R5 MILLION!

Three Somali men were arrested by the EMPD Tracing Unit and the EMPD Public Order Policing members on Monday (16 May) morning in Springs. Airtime and machines used in the manufacturing of the airtime were confiscated.

The metro police raided a place on First Street at Bakerton in Springs where the three arrested suspects admitted to being involved in the illegal activity and also admitting to having initially started their illegal business in Johannesburg before moving to Springs.

Both the airtime found and the machines used are estimated to be worth R5million.

TREK4MANDELA TEAM CARES FOR WINILE SCHOOLGIRLS! LINDOKUHLE FOUNDATION PROVIDE TO NEEDY KIDS! The City of Ekurhuleni, in partnership with Imbumba Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Trek4Mandela team converged at the Winile Secondary School to donate a four months’ supply of sanitary pads to the girls.

Over 800 girls from Winile Secondary School in Zonkizizwe received their gift packs and a written pledge which they recited.

Etv presenter, Penny Lebyane and VW Racing driver Gugu Zulu are some of this year’s climbers

to mount Kilimanjaro.

The event is thanks to the Caring4Girls initiative supported by Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Cllr Mondli Gungubele and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Caring4Girls is a four-year old initiative by Imbumba foundation which not only distributes sanitary towels to keep young girls in school during their monthly cycles but also focuses on creating awareness on puberty and adolescent and in the process demystifying all menstrual related myths.

MAKHURA REACHES LESEDI THROUGH NTIRHISANO! Written By Thembisa Shologu and Stephen Seakgwe

On Tuesday, May 17, the Gauteng government’s programme to address service delivery-related matters landed in the Lesedi municipality.

The Ntirhisano Community Outreach programme commenced the visits in Heidelberg Hospital. Premier David Makhura, who was accompanied by Lesedi Executive Mayor Lerato Maloka, heard just how good the state of health in the area has been.

The 99-year-old hospital has 126 usable beds, and according to the CEO, Dr Ronnie Masilela, it has been delivering nothing but good service to the community.

“We have the state of the art pharmacy where the waiting period for medication is only six minutes, which is above target and the best in the country.

“We respond to patients’ complaints in 25 days.

Our only challenge is space. As far as revenue is concerned, we have managed to collect R10 million, which is also above target of R2 million,” said Masilela.

Premier Makhura said he was impressed with how the hospital was being run. He also with patients at Heidelberg Hospital.

“I commend you on the cleanliness of the hospital. It was established 99 years ago but the state it is in is impressive. It is an old hospital but things are not falling apart. You are number one. Overall the feedback of health here is good,” said Makhura.

Another stop was at the Heidelberg Eco Factory, where alien plants were eradicated and converted into planks to make desks.

“We started in 2003 and employed at least 220 local people and will be employing another 70 for an upcoming project called the Finger Join Line,’ said manager Gopolang Motlhake.

At the Ratanda Multipurpose Hall, the masses from different areas in Lesedi gathered to listen to their leaders get some feedback on their site visits in the area.

Paul Mashatile, MEC for Human Settlements said that during his observations around the municipality, the main problem with housing is the slow pace of completing the settlements. The MEC assured that the people will get results and more feedback as they engage more with the Lesedi Municipality’s departments. “As part of our City wide in-field development strategy, we have engaged with the people living in the hostels around Ratanda about relocating to the newly-built rental units in Shalimar Ridge. But they refused and instead requested to be relocated to the Obed Nkosi mixed-housing development –which will have about 6000 units once completed,” said Mashatile.

MEC Mashatile also emphasized that the beneficiaries that will get houses first are the military veterans and elderly people. The department will also closely examine the electrification and mainte-

nance of some units in the Obed Nkosi area.

Lebohang Maile, MEC for Economic Development was not a stranger to the Ratanda community. He came earlier in 2014 as part of the Township Economy Revitalization Programme, where he identified key issues related to the economy in townships.

One of the issues were the lack of township suppliers within the Lesedi municipality service providers. MEC said; “We will ensure that a minimum of 70 % people coming from this area (Lesedi) are employed in the housing projects in progress.”

Other key points he addressed were: • Investors must invite local and township entrepreneurs to partner in the developments happening in the area • Money must circulate within the townships, only the people can support their own and grow their own economy • The Shalimar Ridge taxi rank needs upgrading, to accommodate trade and small businesses • In Ratanda, the SMME centre (central region of Ratanda), must be upgraded.

• Recycling is a potential industry in the township of Ratanda. Local business people can partner with Lesedi to clean the area and benefit from recycling.

• Lesedi Municipality has introduced an OpenTender system, that will be implemented to ensure transparency and accountability of suppliers and the supply chain department MEC Faith Mazibuko, also addressed the Ntirhisano public meeting on the various cluster-departments she is in charge of.

“In Education; the Mountain View High School will be constructed in the 2017 financial year to accommodate more children in the area. The Hoer Volkskool is also a public school that offers parallel-language education in English and Afrikaans. A complete renovation to Khanya Lesedi Secondary in Ratanda is completed, equipped with state-ofthe-art interactive technology. Grade 12 learners were provided with tablets and teachers got training as part of the ‘digital-schools programme,’” said MEC Mazibuko.

Also on education, the Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres were funded across Lesedi.

Some of the educators and facilitators were trained by the Old Mutual/Hollard Trust.

In sports and recreation, the Ratanda stadium grand-stand will be reconstructed as it poses a safety risk to the community using the facilities.

The people of Lesedi speak to government at the Ntirhisano Outreach Programme in Ratanda Multipurpose Hall.

The MEC also warned the people against the excessive use of salt in food, saying it is the one of the causes of high blood pressure.

The public meeting, as part of the Ntirhisano outreach programme gave the community a chance to voice-out their grievances.

Some of the questions bought by the Lesedi community: • Some houses in Obed Nkosi need to be fixed.

How is that going to be done?

• Ratanda and Jameson Park youth are unemployed. Where are the permanent jobs created by government going to?

• NGOs in Heidelberg extension 23 have no facilities or site to build a centre. What can they do to fix this?

• Some houses in Ratanda are half-built. Why is that when we have informal settlements?

• Sports in the entire Lesedi area are inadequate. The facilities are not fitting for sports and some are broken and unmaintained. Why? • Why doesn’t the government help us in getting some of the land in Jameson Park so we can have agricultural projects to feed and employ us?

• Some community volunteers have not been permanently employed for over a decade. Who is to blame when jobs are given to selected people and not on merit?

• A police station is needed in Kwa-zenzele.

Who can help us?

• The Lesedi traffic department and emergency services need upgrading.

• The local Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP) office in Heidelberg is unknown and inaccessible by people in Devon. Please help us with our busi-

nesses.

• The CWP/EPWP workers are exposed to toxic conditions when cleaning around the areas.

Why don’t we have safety equipment like most workers?

• In Ratanda Extension 23, we have no sport facilities. However, the Emmasdale CYCC sports ground is vacant. Can the community use the grounds?

• The allocation of houses in Obed Nkosi and other areas needs to be publicized. The list is usually known to people around street corners and this is unfair to the elderly beneficiaries who still suffer in informal settlements. Who will fix this mess?

• The current system of sanitation in Ratanda Extension 5 and other informal areas that was introduced by Lesedi municipality is similar to the bucket-toilet system. Why can’t we have proper flushing toilets?

• Some stands within Ratanda are informal settlements because of contractors that worked earlier and built toilets and foundations only. Who will finish the job in these areas like extension 5?

MECs gave oral replies and promised to address all their issues if they have been written by Ntirhisano representatives, who were present at the hall to listen to the people.

The Ntirhisano Outreach programme provides a platform for government in the Gauteng City Region to assess service delivery and engage with residents to help them unlock service delivery blockages. The Gauteng government promised to respond to these issues next year at part of the Ntirhisano Outreach Programme.

MEC Mazibuko promised the Ratanda community that the Extension 7 library will open by end of June this year. Also, she promised to ensure that a gym-park at the extension 7 area will be built.

“In Health, we have identified some of the areas in Lesedi that need more access to primary health care and facilities. In Devon, the Usizolwethu Clinic will be upgraded. Mobile clinics are deployed in areas without the facilities. A new fleet of ambulances will be purchased to complement the existing ones,” said Mazibuko.
