Heidelberg Mall helps rural kids with Lap Desks!

About 665 lap desks were donated to all scholars attending Tikelo Primary Farm School and Kudung Middle School on June 7, sponsored by the Heidelberg Mall.

The desk sits on the child’s lap, providing them with a surface to write on, whether they are sitting on a chair or on the floor.

As the desks are portable, the child is able to take the desk home to provide them with a surface on which to do their homework.

Lap desks are light and durable way for children who do not have desks at school and home.

The desks are printed with educational tools such as the alphabet, multiplication tables, emergency contact numbers and a map of the world.

The educational material is adjusted depending on the age group and school.

To date, Capital Land (owners of Heidelberg Mall) has facilitated the donation of over 36,000 lap desks to scholars across South Africa.

“This is a new beginning for auctioneering,” Chris said speaking to Mapepeza in an interview.

The auction company has multiple items ready to ‘go under the hammer’ with trucks, vehicles, earthmoving plants and boats.

“We like to help people understand the way of auctioning. We start bidding on the item on display, then the highest bidder wins.

Some people compete to get the item by bidding higher than the other bidders” said Chris.

Bidding on auctions presents a great way for people to get a bargain on items that are worth a fortune when buying from a store.

The other advantage is the range of items to choose from.

“Sometimes its too expensive to buy

the stuff you need, so auctioning is a good choice for those who want to save and get discounts,” explained Chris.

Gaz Monkeyz Auctions does a lot of outside auctions as well. This is when someone who has items that they want to sell or get money from putting their items up on auction.

“The on-site auction is done on the premises of the seller,” said Chris.

In the near future, the local auction company plans to increase the frequency of auctions held and introduce new items for bargain hunters.

They will bring in livestock, used furniture, household appliances, vehicles and second hand goods.

“Compared to pawn shops which charge as much as buying new items. With auctioning, you will definitely get a bargain” Chris said.

Corrupts cops caught for extorting City MMC!

On Wednesday, 12 June 2019, an intelligence-driven joint operation between South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) arrested three police officials who were attempting to extort money from the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) in charge of Human Settlement, Councillor Lesiba Mpya.

“The accused had claimed that they were in the possession of a dossier containing evidence of alleged corruption and malfeasance committed

by MMC Mpya, Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina, City Manager Dr Imogen Mashazi and other senior political figures within the Region.

The accused demanded that MMC Mpya pay an amount of R5 million in order for them to make the dossier disappear,” said Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

Upon receiving these demands, MMC Mpya approached the police and opened a case of extortion and corruption against the three police officials. The SAPS and EMPD proceeded to set up a joint intelligence operation in which the accused were investigated and a sting operation was formulated in order to apprehend the accused.

“MMC Mpya participated in a sting operation where he made a money drop off at a venue prescribed by the three accused.

Upon handing over the money to the accused, police authorities

pounced on the three police officials and arrested them,” said Kgasago.

The investigations into the three cops revealed that they were connected to a string of anonymous WhatsApp messages that went viral in March, that made false claims of corrupt activity being undertaken by the Administration of Mayor Mzwandile Masina and Senior Managers of the City.

It was found that messages were being used as an attempt to intimidate Mayor Masina and MMC Mpya into paying their R5 million demand.

“We must commend the swift and effective response by both the SAPS and EMPD in apprehending these three corrupt police officials in our City.

I am glad that today, the truth is finally being unveiled on a malicious and incendiary plot to distract this administration from continuing to deliver quality services to our people. We are now fast closing in on City Officials and other individuals involved in these unscrupulous acts of corruption and extortion.

The City of Ekurhuleni remains steadfast in its zero-tolerance approach to corruption, and we expect to make more arrests in the near future,” said Mayor Masina.

The three accused appeared on Thursday, June 13 The names of the accused have been withheld pending their court appearance.

Bakkie suspected of robberies caught after wild-speed chase!

Three male suspects were arrested following a high speed chase in the streets of Vosloorus that ended at the Nguni hostel.

On Saturday morning, June 15, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police SWAT and Community Liaison (CLU) units acted upon information received about a white Nissan bakkie allegedly responsible for a lot of robberies in the area.

“The EMPD SWAT and CLU members in two vehicles sighted the vehicle and the three occupants of the Nissan bakkie disregarded the metro police instructions to stop and a high speed ensued.

The suspects were eventually cornered within the premises of Nguni hostel where the driver jumped out

of the vehicle with firearm in hand taking cover behind his vehicle and pointing the firearm at the metro police. The metro police reacted swiftly by wounding the suspect in the knee before he could fire his gun,” said EMPD spokesperson Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

According to Kgasago, investigations revealed that the Nissan bakkie was hijacked in Mpumalanga in January this year.

The wounded suspect was transported to Tembisa hospital for medical attention while the other two suspects were detained at Vosloorus police station.

Police also recovered the illegal firearm used by the suspect and further charges will be placed.

Three arrested for frauding Home Affairs!

On Monday, June 24 Heidelberg police arrested two Pakistani nationals, aged 18 and 26 years old (alleged to married) and a South African woman (41) for trying to fraud the local Home Affairs office.

“Police received a complaint of fraud from the Heidelberg Home Affairs Manager Mr Sejane.

On arrival, they were shown three people, a Pakistani couple and a South African that were applying for a birth certificate of an 18 years Pakistani girl as a South

African, assisted by the Domestic worker aged 41 years originally from North West,” said police spokesperson Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate.

When the police interviewed the suspects, they discovered that the suspects came from Warrenton in Nothern Cape Province.

Police arrested the suspects and seized all the fraudulent documents.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear before Heidelberg Magistrate Court soon.

Gauteng residents urged not to buy water!

Rand Water has urged residents not to stock water as a maintenance operation gets underway in the Gauteng province.

The water utility is installing a new valve on the line running from Lethabo to the Vereeniging pumping station. Water supply is expected to be interrupted for 54 hours starting on Monday morning (June 24) until June 27.

Rand Water spokesperson Justice Mohale assured residents that water will be available as the Vereeniging purification plant will be the only plant affected by the maintenance work.

“People should not panic because we are going to be purifying water from Zuikerbosch plant as normal. There will be water, we don't

encourage people to stock water because that will drain the system and create problems for us,” Mohale said.

Mohale said that during the maintenance operation, the utility will be connecting a 2500mm of a valve, between the B19 and B11 pipeline.

“We are talking of a massive pipeline here and we do not want to underestimate the work that is before us. After we have done the work we have to test if everything is okay because we don’t want to make any mistakes," Mohale said.

The areas affected by maintenance include the City of Johannesburg, Mogale City, Merafong, Emfuleni and parts of Ekurhuleni.

Residents have been urged to use water sparingly during this period.

Ekurhuleni mayor shuffles cabinet!

City of Ekurhuleni mayor, Mzwandile Masina has announced changes to his Mayoral Committee on Thursday, June 13.

The changes come following the results of the 8 May 2019 National and Provincial Government Elections.

As a result of these elections, the incumbent Mayoral Committee Members, Cllr Petrus Mabunda and Alderman Robert Mashigo were sworn in as members of the Provincial Legislature and National Assembly respectively.

The changes made to the Mayoral Committee are guided by the need to continue accelerating service delivery to communities of Ekurhuleni.

In appointing the new Members of the Mayoral Committee, the Executive Mayor has focused on selecting individuals with experience, competence, and a passion for service delivery excellence. Gauteng Premier to deliver SOPA at UJ Soweto campus on July 1!

The Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Honourable Ntombi Mekgwe, will officially preside over the official opening of the 6th Legislature will be taking place on Monday, July 1.

The opening takes place at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Soweto Campus.

This is where the Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, pictured, will deliver the State of the Province Address (SOPA).

Below is your quick guide to the Gauteng SOPA.

• The State of the Province Address is a speech made by the Premier of Gauteng, David Makhura • The State of the Province Address is fondly known as SOPA in short.

• SOPA is when the Premier addresses members of the Provincial Parliament during the opening of the Gauteng Legislature.

• Being the Parliament of the Province, the Legislature is a House comprising the Speaker (who Heads up the Legislature) and Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) from various political parties, as per the vote of the Gauteng Province.

• Political parties get seats in the Legislature through a system of proportional representation – meaning, the party with the majority of votes gets the majority of MPLs in the House.

• The SOPA follows after the State of Nation Address, delivered by the President Cyril Ramaphosa, in Cape Town during the opening of Parliament.

• This is when the Premier lets it be known what the achievements of the previous year were and to improve where they failed.

• The Premier states in her address ways to implement and achieve goals that are set by the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG).

• SOPA includes issues such as education, health and social development; growing the economy, the creation of jobs; and infrastructure and development of the informal set-

tlements around Gauteng. Therefore, SOPA addresses visions and goals for the Gauteng province in long term.

• This year’s SOPA will take place at UJ Soweto Campus in the City of Johannesburg.

The reason for this is so that people don’t always disassociate themselves with something that feels foreign to them.

Therefore, bringing it closer to the people.

The openings of the Legislature and SOPA took place in Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Sebokeng Township (Sedibeng) and at the Alberton Civic Centre (Ekurhuleni).

Only the invited members of the Provincial Parliament and public may attend the actual event. However, everyone can be a part of the occasion by visiting local viewing areas/ social media to hear what is being said.

Frail SASSA beneficiaries can get grant in aid!

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) would like to advise family members living with a frail person who is in receipt of a social grant to apply for Grant In Aid. Where a social grant recipient is frail and requires full time care, a family member can apply for a Grant in Aid on behalf of the beneficiary. This is an additional form of social grant aimed at assisting with nursing needs of a frail person already in receipt of a social grant. This grant is R420.

Qualifying requirements for Grant in Aid are as follows: • The applicant must be in receipt of an Old Age Grant or Disability Grant and require full time health care by another person owing to his\her physical or mental disabilities.

• The applicant must not be cared for in an institution that receives subsidy from the State for the care or housing of such a beneficiary.

• There is a medical assessment conducted to determine the severity of ill health by SASSA doctors It is critical for the public to know about SASSA services as this is a government tool aimed at lowering levels of poverty.

Gauteng Legislature to honour women in August Every August on Womens Month, the Honourable Speaker of the Gauteng Legislature, Ntombi Mekgwe, honors the women of the province at the annual Vita Basadi Awards.

MAPEPEZA SAYS The Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni has on June 7 published the Municipal Cost Containment Regulations, 2019.

This is National Government Gazette sent to all municipalities across South Africa meant to put in place some cost-cutting measures to help the State out of debt.

Without consulting other affected stakeholders, the Minister and his counterpart in the department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, approved the gazette and made it law.

During the President’s State of the Nation Address by President Ramaphosa, members of the South African Local Government Association (the official association for all 257 municipalities in Mzansi) took the objection against the cost containment ‘Rule Book’ straight to Mr. ‘Sha-Sha’ himself.

They also took to the press to vent out their concerns about the Municipal Cost Containment Regulations.

In case you have not seen or heard this, the National Treasury expects all municipalities to comply by July 1 on trimming the fat and tight-

day, July 29.Using the nomination (found online at www.gpl.gov.za), you may nominate a woman you believe deserves to be recognised in any of the following categories:

3.Buying of vehicles for municipality’s political office bearers (mayor, councillors etc.) must not exceed R700,000 (incl. VAT) 4.Flight tickets for Economy Class can be used only where the flight time is five hours or less.

Business Class for flights over five hours.

5.No more credit cards for political office bearers, including municipal officials and board members of muncipal entities.

6.No catering expenses of any kind must be incurred if the meeting is attended by people employed

by the municipality.

Hosting of events which last less than five hours must have no catering.

7.All events and functions of the municipality must not be financed by the municipality or its suppliers or sponsors.

8.No corporate branding for personal use by municipal officials.

9.All municipal events must be advertised on the website and not on newspapers or magazines.

10.Municipalities must have a strict policy on travelling of councillors and officials.

It also means less participation in activities meant for communities.

Minimum R932 548 (p.a) – Midpoint R1, 078,089 (p.a) – Maximum R1 223, 632 (p.a) in line with Government Notice No 381 on TRP payable to Municipal Managers and Managers directly accountable to Municipal Manager

PERIOD OF APPOINTMENT

The employment of the Employee commences on date of signing a contract with the Municipal Manager, and terminates twelve (12) months after the next Local Government Election.

REQUIREMENT

• A degree (NQF Level 7) in Engineering Science or B-Tech: Engineering or equivalent from a recognized tertiary institution.

• Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa as Pr Eng. or Pr Tech Eng, in terms of the Engineering Professions Act. • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Local Government and Infrastructure Services Environment at Senior and Middle Management levels, of which at least 2 years must have been at Senior Management level.

• 3-4 years must be at Professional/Management level Engineering Management experience proven track record of managing functions relating to Corporate Support Services.

• Good understanding of performance management systems applicable to local government • Understanding of Municipal Legislative Framework including Municipal System Act, MFMP, Municipal Structures Act, and other related legislation.

• Certificate in Municipal Finance Management Programme (MFMP) or Certificate Programme in Municipal Development (CPMD) in line with minimum Regulation 29967 of 15 June 2007.

PERFORMANCE AREAS

• Manage complex Civil Infrastructure Projects for Planning, Designing, Implementation, Contract Management, Quality Assurance and Compliance.

• Manage the Municipal Infrastructure Grant and other Infrastructure funding grants.

• Manage the provision of services with regards to water and sanitation, electricity, roads and storm-water within the municipal area.

• Oversee the review and development of infrastructure services related policies.

• Give inputs towards preparation of IDP and SDBIP Compilation, implementation, monitoring and reporting of departmental budget.

Heidelberg Schools Debate

The Schools Debate Competition took place at the Heidelberg Mall on Thursday, June 13, featuring local schools from Ratanda and Heidelberg. The Gauteng Education department partnered with the Heidelberg Mall and various local NGOs to host the debates. These debates covered various topics relating to issues faced by young people. Other local stakeholders include Mzumbe Community Foundation, Learner Support Agency, Ratanda Development Centre and Sister 2 Sister amongst others.

Food was sponsored by Woolworths and Wimpy (Heidelberg Mall) with music enable by the Boneha Primary School drum majorette.

Gauteng Youth Expo

The 5th annual Gauteng Youth Expo took place at the Expo Centre Nasrec in Soweto.

The week-long event (June 13-17) is the biggest ever youth-focused expo in the continent, with hundred of exhibitors and thousands of young visitors.

Young people in Gauteng got the opportunity to get information on the latest offerings from various companies and public entities. Activities included cinema screenings, live performances, debates, awards, panel discussions, competitions, sports and recreation. Jobs, internships, bursaries and competitions were galore with young people in attendance benefiting from the event. The Gauteng Youth Expo is organized by the Gauteng Provincial Government.

Multi-sports tournament held for Ratanda youth!

The three day Youth Day Multi-ports tournament was held in Ratanda Heidelberg during the Youth Day weekend.

Temi M&E in conjunction with the Public Alignment Forum (PAF) organized and sponsored the event. Two sporting competitions were held, namely for Soccer and Pool.

Winners got trophies, medals and prize money for their participation. Temi Mechanical And Electrical (Temi M&E) is a Sub-contract working on Terminal 2 at the Vopak Jameson Park plant.

The company has committed itself to the community of Lesedi in outreach programmes for

the needy and disadvantaged residents.

“In so doing we identified Sports and Recreation as one of the vehicles to drive our community engagement programme to root out the drug and alcohol abuse amongst the youth/youngsters,” said Temi M&E ‘s Lunga Nxele.

According to Nxele, the tournament is one of many more initiatives to follow from Temi M&E. “Development of people in communities we work in is of paramount importance to us and maintaining a healthy relationship is vital for both the company and the community,” he confirmed.

The Katlehong Athletics Club decided to visit the senior citizens in the community to commemorate the Youth Day holiday on June 16. The local running group donated warm winter jackets to the elderly members of the Vosloorus Old Age Home.

-deputy minister The deputy minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Ms Nocawe Mafu has wished the national football squad, Bafana Bafana, the best of luck on their quest to concur Africa.

Bafana are participating in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2019, which takes place in Egypt from June 21 until July 19.

“As we are all aware that Bafana Bafana is scheduled to take part in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, I take this opportunity to rally all South Africans to throw all their weight behind our senior men’s national team.

Our national teams remain our own instruments that we utilise to foster Nation Build-

ing and Social Cohesion.

I wish Bafana Bafana can emulate the class of 1996 and once more make us proud and bring back the trophy.

I equally urge the nation to demonstrate a united front and rally behind Bafana Bafana as they do battle commencing on Monday 24 June 2019”, said minister Nocawe Mafu.

Bafana have been drawn against Ivory Coast, Morocco and Namibia in Group D with their first game taking place on Monday, 24 June against Cote d’ Ivoire (Ivory Coast). South Africa will then play against Namibia on Friday 28 June 2019, wrapping up the Group stages with Morocco on the 1st July 2019.
