Kasi History Restored!

The Executive Mayors of both Lesedi Local Municipality and Sedibeng District Municipality accompanied by their Speakers conducted a SOD Turning ceremony at the site identified for a plaque monument of those that have passed on during the Ratanda bus shooting. On Monday, September 30, the Sedibeng District honored the 28th Commemoration of Ratanda Bus Shooting that took place on the September 4th, 1991. The event was themed: Celebrating 25 years of democracy, Growing South Africa together. The programme began with a SOD Turning ceremony at the old Ratanda Cemetery, then proceeded with a wreath laying ceremony to remember those who lost their lives during the bus massacre shootings. During the wreath laying ceremony, councillors from Sedibeng and Lesedi layed flowers on the area where the plaque will be erected. The ceremony was presided over by Pastor Manganye. Speaking to the community during the memorial lecture, Sedibeng mayor Cllr. Busisiwe Modisakeng said that the site where the maasacre occured will be protected and will be declared a Heritage Site. "We will be erecting and unveiling a plague, with names of the victims and a brief history of the event. This is done so that the future generations

to come may never forget," said Modisakeng. The Mayor also promised that the government will try to reach out to the survivors and victims that have not yet been identified. For the next 25 years, the mayor said the conversation must be about our rich culture, arts and heritage. The district will work on the Mzansi Golden Economy for communities by reinforcing the arts and culture sector as a driver for economic growth. "I urge the youth of Sedibeng to develop socially cohesive programmes that promote non-sexism and non-racialism to teach future how to live in a democratic society," said mayor Modisakeng. She said reading our history promotes self understanding and promote the cultural pride.
