The Executive Mayors of both Lesedi Local Municipality and Sedibeng District Municipality accompanied by their Speakers conducted a SOD Turning ceremony at the site identified for a plaque monument of those that have passed on during the Ratanda bus shooting.

On Monday, September 30, the Sedibeng District honored the 28th Commemoration of Ratanda Bus Shooting that took place on the September 4th, 1991. The event was themed: Celebrating 25 years of democracy, Growing South Africa together.

The programme began with a SOD Turning ceremony at the old Ratanda Cemetery, then proceeded with a wreath laying ceremony to remember those who lost their lives during the bus massacre shootings.

During the wreath laying ceremony, councillors from Sedibeng and Lesedi layed flowers on the area where the plaque will be erected.

The ceremony was presided over by Pastor Manganye.

Speaking to the community during the memorial lecture, Sedibeng mayor Cllr. Busisiwe Modisakeng said that the site where the maasacre occured will be protected and will be declared a Heritage Site. "We will be erecting and unveiling a plague, with names of the victims and a brief history of the event.

This is done so that the future generations

to come may never forget," said Modisakeng. The Mayor also promised that the government will try to reach out to the survivors and victims that have not yet been identified.

For the next 25 years, the mayor said the conversation must be about our rich culture, arts and heritage. The district will work on the Mzansi Golden Economy for communities by reinforcing the arts and culture sector as a driver for economic growth.

"I urge the youth of Sedibeng to develop socially cohesive programmes that promote non-sexism and non-racialism to teach future how to live in a democratic society," said mayor Modisakeng.

She said reading our history promotes self understanding and promote the cultural pride.

Govt. welcomes court ruling on apartheid flag!

On Tuesday, August 21, Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture has noted the Equality Court ruling regarding the display and use of the old apartheid flag.

The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Beauty Dlulane, said the court ruling should signal the end of nostalgia for apartheid South Africa.

“At this moment in history no one ethnic grouping should still be missing apartheid and all its symbols. The divisive tendencies of a select few should not be equated to and with Afrikaners, it is a select few,” said Ms Dlulane.

“The ruling vindicates the committee’s long-held view that a large number of South Africans, Afrikaners included, embrace the values of a new South Africa, and are willing to help.”

Judge Mojapelo ruled that gratuitous display of the apartheid flag demonstrates a clear intention to be hurtful, harmful and incites harm, promotes and incites hatred against black people in terms of the Equality Act. Ms Dlulane said social cohesion, as promoted by the Department of Arts and Culture, is continuing and that people need to be vigilant on what they consider to be heritage.

“Let all South Africans embrace heritage that promotes peace and harmony. The country should be about the future. Long after the rogues have departed, the task to build will still be everyone’s responsibility,” she said.

Cabinet has joined South Africans in welcoming the Equality Court’s ruling on the

restriction of the display of the pre-1994 apartheid era flag, which represents the country’s divisive past.

Cabinet supports the ruling that the old flag “impairs the dignity of black people and that those who display the apartheid flag consciously choose oppression over liberation”.

“Symbols that represent the dark days of South Africa, especially the old flag, do not contribute towards building the united, non-racial and non-sexist society as envisioned in the progressive Constitution of the Republic of South Africa of 1996,” Cabinet said in a statement on Friday.

Cabinet calls on all South Africans to promote and strive for a common national identity, as enshrined in the Constitution.

The display of the old apartheid flag should be restricted to genuine artistic, academic or journalistic expression that are in the public interest.

Province vows to put employee safety first!

The Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development and Property Management, Tasneem Motara, said her department will continue to monitor the maintenance of old buildings and progress of new structures that are currently under construction.

Motara said this is to ensure the safety of employees and all the people that are using the buildings.

Addressing the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday (September 10), MEC Motara said her department has issued landlords -- who own the 13 buildings they are leasing on behalf of the provincial government -with the necessary compliance notices to improve on Occupational Health and Safety.

“The safety of employees comes first,” MEC Motara said.

Motara assured all employees who work in the buildings that are under their care that they are committed to creating a conducive environment for work.

“We will work hard to make sure that all our people look forward to coming to work daily and that they perform their tasks without fear that the building that are in can cause harm to them.

According to Motara, her department’s officials have visited many buildings in a bid to ensure that they are suitable for occupation.

“I have chosen Mondays for various reasons, one being the nature of the construction industry and the slow pace of work which creeps in on Mondays and Fridays.

This has assisted the department to keep its finger on the pulse of activities it is conducting and unblock issues where they arise whether from municipalities, communities, service providers or client departments,” Motara said.

Since the inception of #SiteVisitMondays, Motara and her team have visited a total of 23 sites.

The Department of Infrastructure has since took a decision to demolish the Bank of Lisbon building.

Preparations to demolish the building are underway.

“The report, which was presented on 27 August 2018, revealed that The Bank of Lisbon was non-compliant with occupational health and safety (OHS) standards, as it only had 21% compliance against the norm of 85%.”

Life Esidimeni docket Grade 6 learner sent for formal inquest! shot in taxi war!

The Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate George Baloyi, has decided that a formal and joint inquest into all deaths related to the Life Esidimeni tragedy be held in the High Court of Pretoria before a judge.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Thursday, September 18, said Baloyi took the decision after careful consideration of all the facts, reports and available information.

An arbitration enquiry into the Life Esidimeni tragedy was established following recommendations by the Health Ombudsman after compiling a report called “The Ombud’s Report” detailing findings into a probe to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths of mentally ill patients, who were moved from Life Esidimeni healthcare facility to various Non-

Government Organisations (NGOs) in Gauteng.

The inquiry, led by retired Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke, concluded its work in March 2018. It found that government officials acted in breach of the law and the Constitution when they ended the Life Esidimeni contract and moved patients to NGOs without due regard for their wellbeing and state of health. During April 2017, the NPA received 144 enquiry dockets regarding the Life Esidimeni tragedy and the Acting Director of Public Prosecutions then assigned a team of four experienced advocates to the matter to work closely with investigators in collecting more information to build a solid case.

Led by a very senior advocate, they devoted most of their attention to a very protracted investigation, converting all 144 enquiry

dockets into one docket, guiding investigations and monitoring progress on further documentation that had to be obtained.

“It is this process that has revealed that the evidence at our disposal currently is not enough to prove causation of death nor is it enough to help us link the actions of different role players to the eventual deaths.

“It is against these findings and facts of the case as a whole that the State had to make a determination whether a prima facie case justifying prosecution could be made.

“The State therefore correctly sets out the legal principles applicable to the problem and upon thorough assessment of all the available facts and circumstances, came to a conclusion that the matter be referred for a formal inquest,” the NPA said.

Rest In Peace Chester Williams!

The 49-year-old veteran of the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the first player of colour to represent the Springboks since the 1980s – passed away on Friday,September 6.

At the time of his passing, Williams coached the University of the Western Cape rugby team. He also owned his own brand of Lager beer called Chester’s Lager.

Williams’ funeral will be held at the Newlands Rugby Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday, September 14.

President Cyril Ramaphosa honoured the late rugby hero, Chester Mornay Williams, with a declaration of a Special Provincial Official Funeral (Category 2).

Gauteng Education and Youth Development MEC Panyaza Lesufi has expressed shock and disappointment at an incident of taxi association rivalry, which resulted in a fatal shooting of a 12-year-old Grade 6 learner from Mogobeng Primary School.

“On behalf of the entire education fraternity in Gauteng, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased learner and the grandfather of the Grade R learners.

“May they find comfort in knowing that we too share their loss. Furthermore, we strongly condemn such violent acts which threaten the safety of our learners, in and around our schooling environment,” said Lesufi.

According to the department, the Mogobeng Primary School learner left her school premises on Wednesday afternoon, September 18, to meet up with her friend at Izibuko Primary School. The deceased was unfortunately caught in a crossfire between taxi association rivals, which also resulted in the fatal shooting of a man, who had come to collect his two grandchildren in Grade R at Izibuko Primary School who were returning from a school trip.

The Grade 6 learner was wounded during the shooting. She was rushed to Bertha Gxowa Hospital.

The Grade 6 learner sadly succumbed to her injuries on Thursday (September 18).

It is reported that the two learners started a fight over a cell phone, which resulted in the 14-year-old suspect stabbing the deceased with a knife in the chest. The victim died on the scene.

Evaton police arrested the suspect, who is a grade 9 learner, and are currently investigating a murder case.

The department sent officials from its psycho-social unit to render counselling services to the learners, teachers and all affected by the incident.

Makhura appoints Commission of Inquiry into taxi violence!

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has appointed a Commission of Inquiry into minibus and taxi-type service violence, fatalities and instability in the province.

“The inquiry will investigate the underlying causes and people behind the ongoing killings in the taxi industry in the province,” said Gauteng Provincial Government spokesperson Thabo Masebe recently.

The commission will be chaired

by Justice Jeremiah Buti Shongwe (pictured), with Rudolph Lungile Mabece and Hlula Msimang as members of the commission. The taxi industry transports more than 75% of commuters during the daily peak hour period which makes it the dominant mode of transport used by commuters in the province.

The commission will look into and investigate, make findings, report on and make recommendations concerning the following aspects: - The underlying reasons for the recurring conflict, violence, fatalities and instability within the minibus taxi-type service industry within the Gauteng province; - The activities of operators, legal and illegal, as well as any other group or person that contributes to the recurring conflict, violence, fatalities and instability;

The provincial government called on anyone with information on the taxi violence to give evidence to the commission.

“Any person or section of the public, including community organisations, minibus taxi associations, drivers, operators, conductors and rank marshals, who or which is in possession of information which may be relevant to matters to be enquired into by the commission and wishes to give evidence before the commission is invited to contact the Secretary of the commission,” said Masebe.

The Secretary of the commission is set to announce the contact details of the commission in due course.

The Executive Mayor of Dipaleseng Local Municipality, Cllr. Mafunda Makhubu officially switched the lights on for households at Ridgeview in Siyathemba on Thursday evening, September 26. The installation of electricity is an attempt by the Municipality to provide sustainable development including human settlements for residents of Dipaleseng. Nedbank Heritage Games bring local schools closer!

Six schools from around the Heidelberg region competed in the Regional Nedbank Heritage Games which took place at the Ratanda Stadium on Wednesday, September 4.

The students got the opportunity to showcase their sporting talents in soccer, netball and volleyball.

final was won by Kgoro Ya Thuto Secondary School, beating Ratanda Secondary 4-1 in a match ending in penalties. However, on the boy’s football side, Ratanda Secondary School won the finals.

In Netball finals, Khanya Lesedi won against Kgoro Ya Thuto and the trophy for Volleyball went to Kgoro Ya Thuto after beating Kh-

anya Lesedi in two sets. Winning teams received a trophy and medals for each player that participated in the tournament. The tournament was made possible by the main sponsor, Nedbank, including cooperation from local sports administrators and schools. Delivering the main opening speech to contenders and spectators at the games, tour-

nament director Emmanuel Nkabinde said that this event must be an annual feature in the school’s sporting calendar. SAFA connects WhatsApp to MYSAFA Player platform!

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has launched a WhatsApp chat service to make amateur football more accessible, transparent and free of cheating.

A first of its kind in global sports, this service is set to be a gamechanger for South African football players, administrators, fans and all other stakeholders.

The announcement comes on the back of the successful rollout of the MYSAFA Player Registration system, which now boasts 300 000 players.

“Amateur football is run through WhatsApp already,” explained SAFA Acting CEO, Russell Paul.

“Across the country, players and coaches use WhatsApp to communicate their training and match in-

formation. By connecting MYSAFA, we’re giving them more access and control. With the growth of MYSAFA and its new connection to WhatsApp, the Association is no longer just following global sport innovations, we are driving them”, added SAFA President Danny Jordan.

In 2017, SAFA and their technology partner Inqaku launched MYSAFA to assist with the administration of the sport, fight various forms of cheating and lay the foundation for data-driven talent identification across the country.

About 10% of the estimated number of amateur footballers in SA are registered on MYSAFA, with the total increasing daily.

Besides registering players, 1,100 fixtures are published and their results updated on MYSAFA every week – making it the most used team sports administration platform in Africa.

“Each player registered on MYSAFA is issued with digital and physical identity cards and a FIFA ID number. In the event that someone believes that an ID card has been forged or faked, the coaches and fans will soon be able to use WhatsApp to check,” says Jason Anderson, head of the MYSAFA project.

“We are phasing out our existing card verifier app and offering the same feature on WhatsApp. Not requiring an app download (apart from WhatsApp) means card verification will be available to thousands more coaches and match officials.

It could even lead to phasing out plastic cards altogether one day.”

“We have always said that our ambition with MYSAFA was not just to reach players, but to connect and engage with the entire football community in SA. That means every parent, brother, grandmother, friend and fan of every amateur footballer,” explained Jordaan. “We are excited about our WhatsApp integration as it is the key to making that dream a reality.”

Submit your NSFAS 2020 application now!

Prospective students hoping to study through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) have been urged to take advantage of the NSFAS 2020 application roadshows to apply for funding.

“NSFAS provides funding to applicants who come from poor and working-class families, therefore I would like make this plea and urge all those applicants who meet the NSFAS requirements to apply for funding before the closing date.

It is imperative that we take all necessary steps in bringing government services to the people without any prejudice or discrimination,” said Higher Education, Science and Technology Deputy Minister Buti Manamela.

He said prospective NSFAS beneficiaries need to complete and submit the application as soon as possible to ensure timeous consideration of their applications.

The NSFAS applications opened on September 1 and will close on Saturday, November 30 at midnight. To date, NSFAS has received more than 42 000 applications.

On average, NSFAS said it receives more than 3600 applications a day, with the number going as high as 5900 a day this week.

This is a consistent progress when compared to prior years.

To qualify for NSFAS funding for university and TVET college studies, the applicant should meet the following criteria: - Be a South African citizen - Intend to enrol at any of the 26 public universities or 50 TVET colleges in 2020 - Come from a family with combined household income of up to R350 000 per annum (up to R600 000 per annum if the applicant has a disability) - Should not have received NSFAS funding in 2019.

Those who were successfully funded previously, are automatically funded for

2020, provided they meet academic requirements.

The group led by Ma Mahlangu seeks to provide solutions for the victims of drug abuse to turn over a new leaf and get rehabilitated back into society. Names of members: Ntsoaki Moeketsi, Mamokete Buthelezi, Nonhlanhla Xulu, Lebohang Mbele, Mama Pat Mahlangu (founder) , Refiloe Mzima, Katleho Mthunzi (Chairperson), Sizwe Ngungwane, Boiki Mthembu. The non profit organization aims to use the present generation to heal South Africa’s youth by fighting actively against the crime and drug abuse. Heal Our Land gives young people who are affected by such common social ills, and gives them a chance to have hope for the future.

To provide an efficient and responsive administrative, organizational, and logistical service to the Vopak Lesedi Management.

The Management Assistant will be responsible for providing full secretarial assistance to the management team to ensure a high level of service is maintained.

Key Performance Areas

1.Administration • Screen reporting manager’s phone calls and re-directing the calls in the case where another person within the Company can be of assistance.

• Diarize all requests and/or actions that are received, either by e-mail or by telephone, and follow them up as far as possible, alternatively keeping the Management Team informed so that action can be taken.

• Assists the Management Team with adhoc administration duties.

2.Diary Management • To manage the reporting manager/s electronic diary, making the reporting manager/s aware of all functions, appointments and meetings they are required to attend.

• Managing the electronic diary for all Boardroom bookings.

3.Correspondence • Wherever possible, to compile correspondence and in the case of one party’s absence make sure that mail and e-mails are re-directed to the correct person/s, answered on their behalf – if possible, and generally kept up to date.

• Word processing requirements for the Management Team.

• Compile minutes in respect of Management Team Meetings and any other meetings should they arise.

4.Filing and Record Keeping • To create & maintain the Filing System as well as the reporting manager’s personal filing system and ensure that they are maintained at all times.

5.Travel Arrangements • Organize all the necessary travel arrangements and preparing travel itineraries 6.Meeting Coordination • Organizing and coordinating meetings for Management / Staff Team Buildings.
