The Māoriland Rangatahi Film Festival (MRFF) is an opportunity for young people to watch Indigenous films from around the world that will excite, educate and inspire them. The MRFF is programmed by Ngā Pakiaka, a committee of young Māori filmmakers from around Aotearoa.

Access to the MRFF is reserved for schools and school-age young people.

Teachers are encouraged to bring student groups to the Māoriland Rangatahi Film Festival to explore a wide range of films that share strong historic, environmental and cultural themes.

TICKETING Tickets to screenings are only $2 per student or $5 per student per day.

The E Tū Whānau Rangatahi Film Challenge is an opportunity for young Māori up to the age of 24 to create films that present their perspective. Films entered in the challenge are celebrated at the E Tū Whānau Rangatahi Filmmaking Awards.

Entries to the 2018 E Tū Whānau Rangatahi Film Awards close on February 24, 2018. Films entered to the Challenge must include Māori or Pasifika key creative sand be less than five minutes long.

Zoe Hopkins’ (Heiltsuk/Mohawk) first feature film tells the story of 14 year old Ella. After her uncle, a prominent Kitasoo/Xai’Xais activist passes away, Ella makes it her mission to take his ashes home to Klemtu and to stand against a proposed pipeline that would bring oil tankers through their beloved homeland

POSSUM Dave Whitehead (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu) Possum is a tale of two young brothers who meet the ultimate test when they venture into the woods, hunting a notorious possum named Scar.

SHIRTNAMI Colton Williers (Cree, Blackfoot) (Only 8 years old!)

A Shirtnami takes over a town, only to be conquered by Skateboarding Pants.

SHAMAN Echo Henoche (Inuk) Shaman, tells the legend of a polar bear that transformed into an iconic mountain in the community of Nain, Labrador.

THE MOUNTAIN OF SGAANA Christopher Auchter (Haida Gwaii) This film entwines traditional animation with formal elements of Haida art, which are brought to life by a rich, evocative palette and stylized effects.

SOCK MESS MONSTER Nikau Wi Neera (Ngāti Toa Rangatira) Years on from the Socktober Revolution, two Socks face an old enemy.

UKTENA & THUNDER Joseph Erb (Cherokee) This story is a very old Cherokee story. Long ago, two boys feed a small starving snake. It grows up to be a large Uktena that fights Thunder.

NATALIE Qianna Titore (Ngāpuhi) A Māori girl receives a precious waiata composed by her deceased grandfather.

A LIFE LIKE THIS Isaiah Tour (Cambodia) A young New Zealander and his father explore their family’s refugee story as survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime.

BLACK DOG Awa Puna (Ngāti Kahungunu) Black Dog is a short film that creates space for rangatahi to talk about depression, it was directed by former Kāpiti College student, Awa Puna.

THREE THOUSAND Assinajaq (Inuk) Inuk artist Asinnajaq plunges us into a sublime imaginary universe—12 minutes of luminescent, archive-inspired cinema that recast the past, present and future of Inuit in a radiant new light.

HE KĀKANO AHAU - FROM THE SPACES IN BETWEEN Kathleen Winter, Jaimee Poipoi (Māori) A courageous takatāpui (Māori LGBTQI) activist is fighting for true diversity in our Gay Pride celebrations.

DEAR LITTLE BROTHER Benji Timu (Samoa, Kuki Airani) An inspiring letter from an older brother to his little brother.

Māori connect with other peoples of the Pacific through a shared ancestor – Kiwa, hence ‘Te Moananui a Kiwa – The great ocean of Kiwa’.

With support from the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO, and the New Zealand Film Commission, Māoriland took 14 rangatahi Māori filmmakers to the Pacific in September, 2017. They travelled to Rarotonga, Hawaii, Samoa and Tahiti to work with young people in each nation.

Rangatahi Film Leaders: Ana Scotney, Ariah Kapa, Aydriannah Tuiali’i, Awa Puna, Benji Timu, Eva Hakaraia, Kaea Hakaraia-Hosking, Nīkau Wi Neera, Ōriwa Hakaraia, Philadelphia Kingsford-Brown, Shaye Leigh Witehira, Sonny Ngātai, Te Mahara Tamehana, Tutaamure Nikora E TAMA MAI; A tribute to the last Queen of Hawaii that also comments on how Honolulu has changed under the weight of colonisation, urbanisation and the tourist trade.

ALOHA AINA; Celebrates the connection between the surfer and their environment.

ISLAND TIME; A glimpse into the life of three Raro girls who should be at school but are distracted by the beauty and fun of their island.

CHORD OF GRIEF; A story about suicide and depression from the eyes of a little brother.

THE LEGEND OF KATIKATIA; Katikatia is a witch who lures in children with her beautiful hair and beautiful voice.

ALOFA; Alofa is about a girl who raises herself out of poverty through education.

THE PORK BUN POISONING; Sick of getting bullied, a young man gets his revenge.

TAKIRI; Can the Tahitians beat the Brazilians at their number one sport - Volleyball?

LES HORIS; After a traumatic accident young man must overcome his problem with alcohol to make his way back into the light.

Through Our Lens was also supported by First Sovereign Trust, the Nikau Foundation, High Tech Youth Samoa, Motone, Hawai’i Women in Filmmaking, T-Fest and the National University of Samoa, Centre for Samoan Studies and Faculty for Business and Entrepreneurship.

THE MĀORI SIDE STEPS Tamati Kawha (Māori) Five friends embark on a journey to live their Maori show band dream.

MINO BIMAADIZIWIN Shane McSauby (Anishinaabe) A love story about decolonization.

PUORO Komako Silver (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Pakahi) The art of Taonga Puoro is in a state of revival, and Jerome Kavanagh has become part of a movement which is introducing Māori music, art, and culture to the world.

LELUM’ Asia Youngman (Cree, Iroquois, Carrier, Métis) Lelum’ (the Hul’qumi’num word for ‘home’) is a short documentary that was inspired by the land - our place of dwelling and our home.

MOA HUNTER Nikau Wi Neera & Manawatoa Nakhla (Māori) A film about a young Moa Hunter by Kāpiti rangatahi directors.

NO ŌTAKI Aydriannah Tuiali’i & Tutaamure Nikora (Māori) A waiata that celebrates the whakapapa of Māoriland within Ōtaki.

SPECTACULAR IMAGINATION OF THE POHARA BROTHERS Todd Karehana (Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngai Te Rangi, Te Arawa, Ngāti Ruapani) Nathan and Christian try to help their mum raise money to pay her power bill before the power is disconnected.
