Principals Report outstanding sports achievements of the Premier boys Waka Ama crew, our Mixed touch Team, Premier girls Volleyball Team, Girls Basketball Team – both Open and Under 17, the First XV Girls Rugby and our athletes who represented New Zealand or have won National titles in Swimming, Volleyball, Touch, Basketball, Badminton and Trampoline. This has surely been another year of celebrating success. And it again proves that students from Manurewa High School can compete, and achieve, with the best of them – a tradition of excellence. The school Prefects have done a sterling job of upholding the values of Manurewa High School. A special thank you to Jarita and Haze for their leadership of the team; and to all the prefects for their superlative efforts and terrific contribution to the life of the school. At the very core of the school’s success is the commitment, dedication and expertise of our teaching and support staff, and Student Support staff members, who work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of our young people. As a staff we value learning and we are determined that our students will have the very best opportunity to succeed. To the staff of Manurewa High School thank you for a job well done and for your steadfastness and loyalty. I would like to acknowledge and thank the Board of Trustees for the many hours that they give to ensuring that our school functions effectively and smoothly. Our Board members are committed to excellence and represent their community well. A personal and most sincere thank you for the support and help you have given to me during my term and a half as
Acting Principal. We are indeed fortunate to have a strong and focussed Senior Leadership Team who works so hard for the benefits of staff and students alike. A huge thank you to Mrs Shaw and Mr Wilson (Acting Second Principals), Mr Raynes, Mr Muir and Mr Jones (Deputy Principals) and Mrs Lockie (Business Manager) for their willingness to rise to the challenge, take on extra duties, and your total and cohesive professional commitment. It is sincerely appreciated. I know that you will enjoy the 2009 school magazine. Thank you to Ms Whittaker and her team for the production of an outstanding magazine and record of the highlights and main events of the school year. Finally a huge thank you to the students of our school who continue to excel and bring honour and prestige to our school. Good luck and best wishes to those staff and students who are leaving us; and to those who are returning, I look forward to our continued journey of success in the 2010 school year.

Welcome to the official record of Manurewa High School for 2009. This year has certainly been a year of achievements, challenges and changes. In August we farewelled our Principal, Mr Richard Thornton. Throughout his six and a half years at Manurewa High School, Mr Thornton was a highly visible Principal who made every endeavour to ensure that each and every student had the opportunity to “be the very best that they can be”. We thank him for his tremendous contribution to our school and wish him all the best in his new position as Manager of the Northern Region of the Education Review Office. Mr Salvatore Gargiulo has been appointed to the position of Principal and commences his role at the start of the 2010 school year. Mr Gargiulo has a wealth of educational experience which will stand him in good stead as he takes the helm of our school. We look forward to welcoming him to Manurewa High School. The school year commenced with a roll of 2009 students and a total of 186 teaching and support staff. Significant construction has been completed this year –namely a new canteen, new gymnasium and fitness centre and a four classroom Languages suite. It is my pleasure to report that our school continues to achieve at a very high academic level. This is evidenced by the results gained by our students in both internal and external exams, and the very considerable number of awards achieved by our students in the many and varied competitions, contests, sporting codes and Arts events. The involvement of our students in the many facets of school life and co-curricular activities is extensive. Highlights of the year have been:the Senior concert band’s most successful trip to Australia, the First XV Rugby boys sporting and cultural visit to Samoa, the annual Takasaki Japanese Language exchange, the Year 12 Taurewa Adventure Camp, the achievement of the Premier Award for Best Exhibit in the MIT Manukau City Science and Technology Fair, the presentation of a Gold CREST award to Anne Sim, Distinctions (Alice Lam and Michael Wong) in the NZ Economics Competition, Vikas Varma gaining first place in the National Burger Competition, award of second place in Auckland Secondary Schools “Stage Challenge” competition, the “All Stars Rewa” first place in the Manukau City “Stand Up, Stand Out” event, and the

Board of Trustees 2009 Welcome and Greetings, Hi my name is Steve Smith and I am currently serving as the Board Chairperson on Manurewa High School Board of Trustees. As Board Chairperson for the past year, I have had the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life through attending special events during the school year and attending to the vast variety of school matters throughout this year. Throughout the year we have been honored to share in the many accolades show casing our Students successes within diverse sporting arenas, the arts, intellectual and creative cultural events on offer here at Manurewa High. To attend and see the admiration and joy in the students and the support from their friends and pears certainly makes the years difficult times disappear. As Chairperson of a very large multi cultural school, I credit our success to the wonderful teamwork and sup-
port offered by our elected Board representatives. Our team works extremely hard to ensure all students and staff, has the possibility to achieve to their potential through strategic planning, sound financial management, property up grading and enhancement ensuring a brighter future for our School for all. The Board acknowledges and works hard to address the concerns and aspirations of parents and students at Manurewa High School working alongside the Principal and staff and students. Farewell Mr Thornton To be the very best that you can be and to enjoy the journey – aim for the stars, you may reach the moon – climb the highest mountain, but take someone with you to enjoy the view. Life has indeed been a journey. I have always enjoyed school, I love teaching and enjoy learning. I thrive on the energy of positive good people and I have a passion for making things better for young people. It has been my honour and pleasure to lead Manurewa High School for 6.5 years and to give the school my best shot. I leave with the knowledge that the school is in good heart, performing above expectation with a reputation as a school with a “tradition of excellence”
be congratulated and to their families a very BIG thank you. We couldn’t do our job without your support. In recent years we have also developed a very strong student support team in school that has made it possible to implement the many new initiatives – Social Workers, Youth Worker, Guidance Counsellors, Nurses, student support - A big thank you to you all for being so supportive and proactive. To the Prefects and Senior leaders of our school. I have always been able to rely on you to do the right thing. To protect our reputation and to stand up for the REWA way. You have helped us to make this school special and you know how much I appreciate what you have done - thanks. To the Board of Trustees: Steve Smith, Jill Crooks, Stuart King, Judy Lambert, Francis Tahata, Staff rep: Roger Metcalfe and Student Rep: Roy Sembrano – thank you for supporting me and for being prepared to trust me to get the job done. You have empowered me to just “get on with it” and I have always tried to keep you fully informed. A school is successful when the Board and Principal work well together. We have been a good team – the Board focussing on Governance and the Senior Leadership Team on

We have established the REWA way. I say “we” because the secret of success at Manurewa High School is the team. It has been a privilege to work with so many wonderful people who are committed to making a difference in the lives of the young people in their care. Heads of Departments, Teaching staff, Support staff and Board members – all working tirelessly to ensure that each child achieves their potential and meets our expectations. It is a wonderful place to work, we laugh together, sometimes we cry together but we always want the best for each other. As a team we have one focus – improving the learning opportunities for our young people – they are the reason we do what we do. And the kids at Manurewa High School are special. They appreciate the opportunity that they have been given and know how to say thank you. They value education – they know that we are here for them and that this is their safe place. We refuse to meet the low decile, South Auckland expectations of us – we have chosen to be different with high expectations, discipline, uniform, standards of behaviour and respect. Every day, over 2000 students in our community, often against large negative odds, get themselves to school, in a smart uniform, on time, well prepared and ready to learn. For that achievement they are already winners. For that they deserve to

management. The school is in good heart with all indicators pointing to a school that achieves well beyond expectation and is ranked as one of the top schools in Auckland for adding value. (Refer to Metro Article.) People often comment that our school is “alive” – they refer to it as having a “heart beat” This is indeed a complement and it reflects on the good that is happening around school. All areas of the curriculum are strong and areas of co-cuuricular activity are also alive and well. The Arts, Culture, Music, and sport all play a vital role in providing a balanced learning experience. Trips, overseas travel, camps, adventures, school productions, KBB music festivals, concert band performances, art exhibitions, science fair, Mathex, business enterprise activities – all delivering a richness that is not found in a lot of schools. We can all be very proud that we have been part of one of the best schools in NZ. And finally, a big thank you to my Senior Leadership Team; Mrs Dixon, Mrs Lockie, Mrs Shaw, Mr Wilson, Mr Raynes, Mr Jones and Mr Muir - and
to our support people – especially Sarah Davies my PA. Thank you for being so supportive and professional. We have all worked so well together, with a high level of trust and empowerment. Keep up the good work and maintain the “tradition of excellence” Mrs Dixon will be acting Principal until the new Principal is appointed and a special thank you to Liz for all her loyalty and support. Liz – we have been a good team – I have always known that I can rely on you to uphold the “tradition of excellence” A special thank also to Julie Lockie – my Business Manager for the excellent job that she has done as the Business Manager of the school. Julie is a very capable Business person who has ensured that we always receive a clean bill of health from the Auditors. Thank you for your expertise and support – it is much appreciated. And finally, the biggest thank you of all to my family – for putting up with my endless “school stories”, my rambling about all the good stuff that goes on at school, for supporting the dream of “making a difference”, for sharing me with the school community and for encouraging me in my journey. Thank you for being there for me – to Greg, Peter and Katie – you are
wonderful people and you continue to make Mum and I so proud of you and what you are doing with your lives. To Suezy, you have been a brilliant “Principal’s wife” – so supportive, involved, caring and a genuine partner in the success. I couldn’t have done my bit if you hadn’t been behind me 100% and you have demonstrated on many occasions that this is a shared journey – we have enjoyed the success together – thank you with all my love. It is always hard to leave a place that has become a second home. I am moving on to a new position with the Education Review Office as the National Manager – Northern Region responsible for schools North of Taupo with 85 reviewers in my team. I will always call Rewa Home and I know that I can rely on everyone who is associated with Manurewa High School to make sure that the “tradition of excellence” is maintained. Student Success Gold Crest Award - Anne Sim This year was another good year for CREST at our school. For the third time we have had a senior student achieve the Gold CREST award for Creativity in Science and Technology. This programme is administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand and aims to foster creative thinking, problem solving, innovation and passion in the fields of Science and Technology. Anne Sim (13 SR) was awarded her Gold CREST badge and certificate at her seminar on the 5th of November. During this seminar Anne had to present her findings to an audience and had to defend her decisions during question time. Considering that ten students across the country started the CREST process and only five completed it, one can see how demanding and rigorous it is. The topic she has spent the last year researching and investigating is how we may be able to use algae to mitigate the amounts of carbon dioxide emitted by polluters such as industrial chimney stacks. Anne gathered data on a small scale using two different approaches – the open pond and the filter system. In the open pond system the emission is passed through a series of large open ponds in which free floating algae thrive and act as a CO2 sink by absorbing the gas during the process of photosynthesis and converting it to carbohydrates and oils. The filter investigation involved the use of special porous filters such as Teflon and Quartz on which filamentous
algae were embedded. The emissions are passed through a series of such filters in clear ducting through which sunlight can pass. The algae are harvested from the filters and processed into bio fuel and/or stock feed. Anne then used mathematical modelling to extrapolate the small scale data to a large scale in order to compare both efficiency and cost effectiveness of the two systems and found the open pond process to be the more promising. According to the National Assessor for CREST, Carol Pound, Anne did very well and I quote “I was very impressed with how you handled the situation yesterday. Lots of unexpected things happened and you did not let them throw you. Some of the questions were quite hard and you gave good answers.” Jessie McKenzie -The Teaching and Learning Specialist at The Royal Society of New Zealand said “I was speaking to Mrs Pound today, asking how you got on... I hear that you displayed all the excellent characteristics of a Gold CRESTer” Anne is the first student to gain her award under the new milestone requirements, which enforce adherence to a timeline, expect budgetary planning and meticulous record keeping in line with current best practice techniques. As the final act in her Gold CREST year Anne will attend the annual Science Honours Dinner in Auckland at the Hyatt Regency Hotel for a gala banquet and prize giving, where she will be awarded a medal, along with eminent professional scientists who will gain medals such as the
Rutherford medal. Anne has her career in Science off to a flying start and the skills and confidence she has gained during her years working through the CREST programmes of Bronze, Silver and Gold, will stand her in good stead. I encourage other students interested in science based careers to give CREST a go – you never know where it might lead you…. Mrs F Colyer

Staff Leavers 2009 Ms Du Burgess I started teaching at Manurewa High School in July 2000. It was strange at first. The school roll was larger than the population of the Bay of Islands town I had moved from. I remember the first Year 11 assembly I attended, the number of students in the hall was almost the same as the entire roll of my previous school. It is a small world. In my new Year 11 class was a boy I had taught in the Bay of Islands as a Year 9 student. During my time here I have taught – Accounting, Enterprise Studies, Consumer Decisions, Business
Management and Maths. I was a Year 13 form teacher for seven years. I have taught many wonderful students and had some interesting experiences such as the trade fairs, SELL programmes and CETA Accounting Pursuits evenings. After almost ten years here I felt the need for a change and so am moving to a new school. I will miss the students, especially their friendliness. However, I will not be leaving the area so I am sure I will still hear the occasional ‘Hello Mrs Du Burgess’ as I walk through Manukau mall. I always enjoy meeting my ex students and hearing what they are up to but now when they ask
if I am still at MH at least my answer will be different. To all the staff and the students, but especially to my current students, I wish you all the best for the future.
Miss Jolley I would also like to thank the amazing art department, Adele, Suz, Sacha and Krichelle, you guys rock.. The support I have received is outstanding, I have always felt welcome in your classes and knew if I had any issues each and every one of you would offer to help… Support like this makes things are whole lot easier…. I am sure the department will continue to shine…. Leaving behind terrific colleagues and the most character-filled bunch of students, I find myself revisiting the countless fantastic memories I have had. As I start off on my new adventure down south, but not knowing what lies ahead, I hope that wherever the road may take me, I will meet as many wonderful people and have many fantastic experiences as I have had at MHS. This year, saw me become a form teacher to some of our newest students… 9JL, they are full of character, humour, passion and fun… Although we have had our moments, and there were a few, you guys still managed to make me smile….. I would love to come back and see you guys graduate in year 13 and look forward to seeing ALL of you there. A few words for 9JL:
Oh! The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
14
You’ll look up and down streets. Look’em over with care. About some you will say, “I don’t choose to go there.” With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you’re too smart to go down a not-so-good street. You’ll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You’ll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed.) Kid, you’ll move mountains! So…be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray or Mordecai Ale Van Allen O’Shea, you’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!

When asked to write an article for the magazine.. I thought “what do I write?” Not because I had nothing to say, but because I had too much to say… I guess I will start at the beginning.. (I promise I won’t bore you and will keep it brief.) It really doesn’t seem like 2 years ago, I arrived at Manurewa fresh out of teachers college…. Wide eyed and bushy tailed and full of enthusiasm (yes, that enthusiasm is still there), to start my new career as a teacher. I will never forget the feeling of excitement, nervousness and OMG!!! as I walked into the staffroom. I still often say to myself I can’t believe I am a teacher….. Throughout my time here at Manurewa High School I have been the teacher, however in many ways I also feel I have been the student. I have learnt many new things. The first thing that springs to mind is that the word “dry” does not necessarily mean something isn’t wet. There have been numerous lessons my students have taught me. Firstly , jandals are not just a summer footwear item and can be worn with just about anything, it is always appropriate to wear as much clothing underneath your school uniform as possible and lastly how much mana, culture and realness our students have and it is this I will dearly miss. I will also miss the laughter, friendship and sense of collegiality in the staffroom. I have met some wonderful people who I admire greatly. There are too many to name but you guys know who you are…..

Student Support Services Kia ora Koutou, Talofa Lava, Malo, Kia orana, Bula, Namaste Student Support Services is a team made up of a group of professionals who work to support students, families, staff, and Senior Management. B.O.T.s. The team is made up of Social Workers, Youth Worker, Counsellors, Nurses, R.T.L.B.s, Attendance officers, Cops in schools and most importantly clerical support. Unfortunately we lost a Counsellor Zoia Tui at the start of the year who returned to Brisbane to look after her sick father. Zoia’s place was taken up by Ms Hiltrud Egle who fitted in very well to the team. We were also blessed to have Mrs Nabila Jacob (Year 09 Assessment Nurse) join us in Term 02. Ms Pani Herangi (Attendance) has taken a more permanent role within the school this year. We also had Mr Henry Siva (Youth Worker) join the team at the start of the year and Mr “H” soon built an awesome rapport with both students and staff. Mr “H” was also responsible for some projects within the school. Unfortunately Mr “H” will not be with us after term 04. On behalf of the team I wish him and his whanau all the best for the future and I am sure given his commitment and passion with working with Youth he will be an asset wherever he goes.
It has been a very busy year for the Student Support Services team in all areas from minor investigations, to major interventions and support for students, their families, supporting staff and Senior Management The introduction of programmes to support students in various areas of their young lives has had positive outcomes and benefited them immensely. These programmes have helped them to make good choices in their young lives. Because of the support and introduction of these programmes, there been a lot of work to retain and keep students focused on their education and their wellbeing. The excluded or expelled rate has dropped considerably and early intervention has meant those students that would normally fall through the cracks and be lost in the system are getting the support they need to stay on task. The team also worked very closely with outside agencies if it was deemed that extra support was needed. Student Support team has built a solid rapport with students, whanau, staff, B.O.T.s.
B.O.T.s, staff, students, and especially the STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM whom if I did name as individuals I could write a book of appreciation for the outstanding work that was done this year. The shared lunches we used to support each other through the tough times were very well done team. I would like to acknowledge Mr Richard Thornton (ex Principal) who left us and moved to greener pastures in the Ministry of Education Sector for his positive mannerisms to all of us within Manurewa High, we wish him well and I am sure that the team at Education Review Officer would be grateful for his Management skills, smile, cheeky wit, and charisma that only certain individuals like Mr Thornton possess. We also look forward to working with the new Principal who starts next year. To B.O.T.s, Acting Principal Mrs Liz Dickson, Acting 2nd Principals, Deputy Principals, Deans, staff again thank you ALL for your support and we look forward to working with you all again in 2010. All have a safe and enjoyable festive season, and holidays. Na Hardy McLean Student Support Services

Biology Liggins Institute In July, the 03Bio classes had the best field trip of the year…to Auckland University’s Liggins Institute to learn about the fascinating world of Biotechnology. Unlike our wonderful trip to Miranda however, we had a really flash bus that drove us into the city instead of one that leaked when it rained. First of all, we met an interesting human being named Helen and her minion, Joseph. Helen then proceeded to give us a two hour lecture on just
how fascinating biotechnology really is and how helpful it is in everyday society, while Joseph prepared a practical session for us like the good little helper he is. Helen spoke about how they determine the probability of people getting cardiovascular disease based of their weight as an infant and about the processes of meiosis. After this compelling talk, we had interval where we got some snacks and fresh air. Upon returning to the classroom, we all donned our gorgeous blue lab coats and got to work on the processes involved in Gel Electrophoresis and Polymerase Chain Reaction. After this, we got to meet and talk to some special guests who have spent time
researching and working on projects that the people at the Liggins Institute deal with. This may have been one of the most beneficial parts of the day as we got to find out about more of the practical uses of biology. All and all this trip was great for everyone that attended as we got to do some real lab work and experience what it would be like if we chose to do biotechnology as part of our future careers. It also helped us with our internal assessment. Definitely the best trip ever. By Deb Clifton 13MO
Miranda Shorebird Centre There wasn’t much unlucky about Friday the 13th of March for 03BIO. That was the day the two classes visited the Miranda Shorebird centre, home of many native birds. We all enjoyed listening to a bearded man talking to us about the migration of the BarTailed Godwit. Once a year they fly all the way from New Zealand to Alaska. Mr Beard told many hilarious jokes during his discussion. After Beardy’s talk, we had morning tea. Everyone had brought lots of awesome treats to share. I made my famous biscuits.
After that we all jumped back on the leaky bus of fun to see the birds for ourselves. It was an exercise in self restraint; we needed to be extra quiet to avoid scaring the birds into early migration. We got to look through binoculars to identify features of the Bar-Tailed Godwit. They were standing all together in a large group, much like ourselves. Once we’d all had a good look we piled back on the bus to head back to the Centre. But that was when our luck took a turn for the worst. By this time it had started to rain, and the bus looked like it had no intention of starting. After a lot
of worry and stress, we were finally on the road. We ate our lunch back at the Shorebird Centre before heading home. We begged to stop at a McDonald’s and eventually Mrs Flynn and Miss Laulu relented; we stopped at the Bombay Hills for treats. We all learnt loads at Miranda Shorebird Centre, and it was great to learn about the migration of the Bar-Tailed Godwit. By Zena Davis 13PL
Auckland Zoo and Museum thoroughly distracted by a huge number of fascinating creatures. I have to say, it felt like we were interrupting a certain species from their “alone time” but we dashed off before they could notice people staring. We were also very lucky to participate in an intriguing discussion about the early origins of mankind while learning about the characteristics of hominids that set them apart from apes. Not only were we actively taking part in the discussion, we learnt vital facts that will surely aid us when we step into “exam-mode”. Unfortunately our trip to the zoo ended early as we had to migrate to the museum for an hour or so to attend a seminar about human evolution; inspection of skulls and early tools was also included. The host of the show was quite a bizarre specimen, with fuzzy hair and a belly that cried “let me

be free!”, but he did present interesting concepts, interesting enough to keep us engaged. Both trips helped us engage with the topic of “human evolution and culture” and we returned to school a little bit more knowledgeable than before, about the origins of hominids and all the little idiosyncrasies that make us human. The only place that could excite a handful of shaven and modified hominids would be the Zoo, which we travelled to on the 24th of August. It was inexcusably the most exhilarating field trip we went on as each of us climbed into the bus wondering about what exciting facts we might learn. Perhaps the thought of comparing ourselves with apes was what made us so excited, however the chocolate, caramel-filled birthday cake, handmade just for Mrs Flynn, was very much pleasurable as well. Undeniably our enthusiasm ceased when we discovered our sunshineyellow balloons were prohibited from entering the zoo as the animals would have been frightened by the very sight of them. Though it was disappointing we couldn’t take in our balloons, we were

Business Applications Department Monetary Policy Challenge The Monetary Policy Challenge gives secondary school students an exciting opportunity to put themselves in the shoes of Reserve Bank economists and recommend what the Official Cash Rate could be. Using the same information as the Reserve Bank, teams assess the economic conditions facing New Zealand and the outlook for inflation. Based upon their assessment of the economy, each team decides on an appropriate setting for the Official Cash Rate. Altogether 40 schools participated in this competition and 21 passed the stage two (Forecasting and decision making). Manurewa High School was one of them and our team went to the Regional finals where they delivered a
presentation justifying their advice and took part in a question and answer session with the judges. Grades were awarded to schools from 0 to 5 and Manurewa High School got grade 3.5 with Merit. Alice Lam, Syavie Ghamry and Amit Narayan were the participants from our school. They showed a strong understanding of the economic relationships and had identified some of the key issues facing the New Zealand economy. The Monetary Policy Challenge links to NCEA achievement standard: Economics
3.4 (AS 90632). It sparked the passion for economics, giving our students the chance to link what they learnt in textbooks with reality. The whole experience has been really exciting.
NZ Economic Competition This year for the first time Manurewa High School entered the New Zealand Economics Competition conducted by THE UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND and we are proud of our students who showed an excellent performance in it. To recognise the achievements of the top 20% of students (those who
achieved High Distinction or Distinction) there was an Awards presentation evening in Auckland Business School on 28th of October, 2009. Congratulations to Alice LAM (Year 13) and Michael WONG (Year 12) who both recieved Distinction Awards at the presentation evening.

The Trade Fair was held on 2nd July at Manurewa High School hall. Many Year 10 students took part in this event in which we had to come up with a product which is handmade by us to sell. We would have liked more buyers to attend but that didn’t stop us enjoying ourselves. The year 10 Accounting and Enterprise classes have grown from the experience. We encourage next year’s Year 10s to try the experience.

Art Department Met prat, quatumm oluptat volore dolortionse tetumsa ndiamet aliquisl dolesequat. Luptat nulla feuguerat. Od do dio consequipit, quat. Ut am, sis alisi. Five level headed and artistic women still make up the Manurewa High School Art department, this year with the welcomed addition of Miss Metcalfe. Not a fresh face to Manurewa High School, but a fresh face to our 2009 Art team. We appreciate that she has returned to this school in her new role of Art teacher and teacher of Maori Carving.
This has been yet another successful and exiting year for the teachers and students in the Art Department. Many new programmes have been implemented to keep up with our ever changing youth. Students this year have created and undergone many new projects such as altering books
to create ‘memory’ sculptures, exploring our school surroundings and Papakainga through paint and print, exploring their neighbourhood through local icons such as the four square, stencilling through the inspiration of anonymous artist Banksy, and our young Art Historians have created posters educating the effects of commercialism. We are pleased our classrooms are still standing with all this creative expression bursting from within. All teachers in this department want art and learning to be real for our students, therefore we are pleased we could offer all senior students a trip to the galleries to see art work in its ‘natural’ environment, up close and in the flesh. For junior students this year we were pleased to also offer this experience, with the Real Art Roadshow making it to Manurewa High. This transportable gallery sitting in the back of a truck, offered junior and senior art students the viewing of real life, real size, famous New Zealand artworks right in our school grounds. A highlight for the department and students is the annual art exhibition. Students and staff members
works were once again displayed in a gallery like setting and offered for sale to the public. It was yet another successful exhibition as the quality and quantity of the work is increasing every year. A special note goes to student Peni Sakisi the recipient of the ‘Contribution to the Art exhibition,’ who contributed a series of stunning multimedia Level Two Prints. With all this happy cheer reflecting on the year, it is unfortunate to have to have to end on a sad note. Despite our pestering, we are loosing our Art History expert this year, as Miss Jolley will be following her heart and heading further south. I’m personally finding this hard, as now I need to find someone new to have my cups of tea with. Less selfishly, I hope she’s aware of what a creative impact she has had on the department and her students over these past two years. Her programmes and smile have been truly wonderful and we will miss her face in our school. Thank you department and thank you Art students, for a great 2009 year.

Careers Department This year, the Careers Centre has been a popular haunt for an ever increasing number of students from all levels wanting career information, advice, or often, just a place to ‘hangout’ and complete school work. The increase in numbers has kept me and my two wonderful assistants, Ms Helen Sloan and Miss Anna Paotama on our toes all year, but it has been great to see our students being proactive and enthusiastic about their future goals. Mr Graeme Murray kindly returned from his retirement, to assist me two days a week, with the Year 12 individual interviews. We welcome Mr Gary Reid, our new Gateway Coordinator to our team. He joined us at the beginning of the year from Otahuhu College where he has had seven years experience in this role. His well established workplace contacts have enabled our students to access some new and exciting Gateway opportunities. Gateway Program
We held our biennial Careers Expo in June this year. Over 300 students, friends and family attended. Over 40 providers offered their expertise, making this a very successful evening. In June, all Year 12 and 13 students had the opportunity to consult with MIT staff from all Faculties in our school hall during class time. This is the third year we have hosted this Expo, and our staff and students find it most valuable and informative. WEBSITE AND REWANET: To access the Careers Department page on the new website, click on Curriculum > Learning Areas then click on the Careers on the diagram or use REWANET. Click on Learning Areas > Careers. Students can access Careers Notices and Scholarship information from here. Let’s hope that there will be many more of you out there who are successful with your applications for funding, and to those of you who are leaving and ‘moving on’ – all the best for the future! See you next year! Mrs S Leslie
Gateway students at MH are involved in a range of Gateway Programmes, and in 2009 we have introduced several new initiatives to the school. These were TVNZ, NZ Fire Service, NZ Police- (Counties Manukau), Manukau City Council, National Bank, Sky City, Air NZ, Middlemore Hospital (CMDHB). Special thanks must be made not only to the students involved who represented MH at all times to the highest level while taking part in the Gateway Programme, but also to all the staff for their ongoing support throughout the year, and of course to all our companies that have
shown a willingness and commitment to work with our school and the building of new partnerships as well as existing ones.

Gateway is a government funded initiative through the Tertiary Education Commission. Gateway enables senior students to learn and gain NZQA credits while in the workplace. Gateway is designed to make learning relevant and to broaden student’s options, and enables schools to help their students by strengthening the range of career pathways. A feature of the initiative is that students learning is integrated with their schools general education provision and is not simply workplace experience. Gateway offers students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in a workplace context, and allows businesses to contribute to their local communities and to build up skills in their industry.
schooling into the tertiary sector. Students initially attend a classroom presentation that emphasises the importance of achieving sound school qualifications that are needed to access the range of courses available at MIT. Students were then given guided tours of the two main campuses. JUST THE JOB: Over the past two years, four of our senior boys have auditioned and scored starring roles working in very different occupations for the television programme Just the Job on TV2. Congratulations to Chez Panapa 13SP and Jamie Philipp 13MO, who represented themselves and our school proudly this year. Our school has been fortunate to be one of only three NZ Secondary schools to be invited to participate in the filming of the 100th programme in the series. To mark this occasion, a Year 12 Career Education class was filmed viewing some of the 90 occupations from the series that are to be networked onto our intranet. We will get to view our contribution sometime before the end of this year when the next series is released.

Gateway Students During term two Lana Westerlund and 6 other students tried a retail work experience at The Warehouse. “Working there was awesome and meeting all the workers there made us feel comfortable in a really big environment. We learnt all these key skills used in a retail store such as working the different sections and learning the product lines. For anyone who wants a career in retail then go for this. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it and gain that experience you’re looking for”. During term two Lily Meredith got the opportunity to do a gateway programme with the National Bank in Papatoetoe. “I went there every Monday for 10 weeks. It was a fantastic experience for me as I worked with different people and learnt basic banking skills and customer service skills. Working at the National Bank has been a great pleasure as I have gained a lot of knowledge and skills that will help me in the future”. Brendan Downie had 10 weeks at Air New Zealand Engineering Services. “I learnt and experienced a huge range of things. I’ve been inside the cargo hold replacing a vital piece of wiring that enables the heat and water to be separated from each other. I’ve leant about all the areas in the aviation engineering sector. I took the most interest in the Avionics sector, the area that involves maintaining the core electrical and computer components for keeping the plane in the air”.
Nicholas Melvin got to work with professional chefs at Happy Days Family Restaurant. “It was awesome, we got to work with chefs who took us under their wing and showed us what it is like to be a chef. We learnt new skills and techniques which we can use everyday and that will help further our knowledge in hospitality. The best part would have to be … the free food!”

Stephanie Wass spent time at the Gardens Early Childhood centre. “I have gained so much knowledge about child development and how a teacher interacts with the child and methods they use. The teachers were a big help, they were so friendly and kind, the children were such a delight and I had a lot of fun interacting and working with them”.

Dance Department It has been a fantastic year for Dance with students responding very well to a big change. It is always difficult to take over as a new teacher, especially if the teacher before you was highly regarded. This was the case with Miss Ngawati. She started Dance at Manurewa High in 2007 and grew the subject with such enthusiasm that I was able to teach to level two (Year 12) for the first time this year. My journey has been one of amazement as the students have been respectful, attentive and energetic. Highlights outside the classroom have been Stage Challenge which Manurewa had not entered since 1995. It was a big ask and many students who do not participate in Dance joined and brought their area of expertise. That included art students, sewing, designing, lighting and sound. We came 2nd which was no mean feat and we were very proud of the work we produced. ‘Bring it on’ Hip Hop competition was another wonderful experience completely led and choreographed by
students. Our ‘Bring it On’ crew also did a lot of fundraising which included performing at Clendon Park Primary School. This was a huge success and not only did we fill a need to be in touch with our community but they raised a lot of money. Unfortunately we did not make finals this year but only a couple of weeks later we entered an ‘All Stars Rewa’ crew into the ‘Stand Up Stand’ run by the Manukau Council and we took it out. Yes, we were the champions and it was a very well deserved win. The judge said that we won by a country mile and gained our school the prize pool of $1,000.00. Obviously this money will be used towards Hip Hop costumes for next year. Also there has been a crew doing community work promoting Dance and teaching little ones. They are called Pro-Era and they have done Manurewa High proud within the community. All and all it has been
a year of inspiration. Students have learnt Tap, Jive, Salsa, Jazz, Ballet, Musical Theatre, Choreography and much more. We also had a very successful concert for family and friends to view students performances. All year levels participated and it was a great night, well recieved by all. Further expansion in Dance is inevitable and learners are becoming more confident everyday. Ms S Maybury

Drama Department It has been another action packed year in Drama. Our Year 11-13 classes were entertained in the school hall by Peach Theatre Company in a performance of “Niu Sila” then we all went to see “Pohutukawa Tree” at the Maidment Theatre – this performance was special for us as this play hasn’t been performed in years and of course Rena Owen was playing Aroha. Year 13 Drama had a lovely trip across the bridge to see Whero’s New Net in Takapuna to top off a very New Zealand themed theatre year for our classes. Many of our drama students continue to involve themselves in outside theatre groups with senior students attending Massive Theatre Company workshops in the holidays. Jacob Faiva Yr 13 runs some of these workshops and will be employed by Massive next year. Navneet Chand and Amelia Holder were our Auckland Theatre Company Ambassadors and were given the opportunity to attend any of the theatre company performances during the year. We have had some memorable performances this year from our NCEA classes. In Year 11 Drama, Mr Botting’s class
performed Hope Springs and Miss Thomas’ class performed Living with Lady Macbeth. We were very proud of both classes and their professionalism and commitment to this process was impressive. Mr Botting’s Year 12 Drama performed a compilation of extracts from different plays on the theme of love turning to hate. The class took on some challenging roles including Shakespeare which they performed with confidence and skill. After considerable issues with finding a play for 10 boys Miss Thomas decided to really challenge the class with her favourite Shakespearean play “A Midsummer Nights Dream” We set the play on a fictional Pacific Island called Malofa. These talented students performed 2 nights to a full house and the audiences were thoroughly entertained. The class is to be commended on their hours of hard work during the holidays and term time preparing for this assessment. It is not easy learning Shakespeare and the students really brought this comedy alive and made their own mark on their characters. It was a pleasure working them on this project and there were many laughs at rehearsals (sometimes too many boys!)
I would like to thank the staff for all their hard work this year. It does not go unnoticed and the students appreciate the extra hours required in Drama to get the performances to the standard we have come to expect at our school. Curtain. Miss Thomas HOD Drama

Educational Support Centre The ‘Ins and Outs’ of the Education Support Centre 2009 The Farewells: At the start of the school year we reluctantly let Mrs Williams move to ILC. So the junior class were taught by Mr Grubb (3 days a week) and Mrs McLaughlan (2 days a week). Many thanks to both of them for their help during this time. Mrs Foster moved onto new ventures in Term 2. Mrs Foster was known to many students and made a huge contribution to the department running our Special Olympics programme and overseeing our department inventory and resources. She also coached and
managed the school badminton teams for many years. Mrs Foster was replaced by Mr Plackett, but unfortunately at the end of term 3 Neil also moved on. The Welcome: At the start of term 2 we welcomed Ms Devoy to MHS and the ESC department. Ms Devoy arrived from the UK on April 18th and met the junior class for the first time on April 27th. Ms Devoy has added to the fine work done by Mrs Williams by integrating activities outside the classroom into the departments programme. This year students have been able to experience climbing, skiing, swimming and a night away from home to their list of accomplishments.
Trip to Taupo
IN CAELUM ASCENDE
The ESC department were lucky enough to secure funding this year to take 10 students down to Ohekune, with a view to taking them for a days skiing. Unfortunately due to extreme weather conditions the mountain was closed. This did not dampen our spirits however. We took the mini bus into Taupo and spent the day sampling as many of the attractions there as we could. We began with the walk around the ‘Craters of the Moon’ this supported some project work they had been doing in class on Volcanoes. After this we went to Lilliput farm, which is an interactive farm where students are able to feed the animals, and learn a little about each one. We finished the day with a dip in the hot pools to rest our weary bones. Then home for fish and chips and an early night. The students all were all fantastic and enjoyed, what was for some of them, their first experience of being away from home. It will be something we intend to repeat in years to come. All was not lost in terms of the skiing as we plan to use the funding to take 9 of the students to snow planet towards the end of term 4. During the terms students have also benefitted from trips to the Extreme Edge Rock Climbing Wall, the botanical gardens, Manurewa swimming pool, and the bowling alley. It has been fantastic watching their confidence increase as they meet each challenge they are presented with.

Vision Resource Centre The Vision Resource Centre (VRC) is on site to support students with vision impairments. Our students are very much an accepted part of the Manurewa High School community. Most of the resources are produced on site and students have faster access to it. The production of resources makes the unit unique in the sense that it is the only centre in New Zealand to support students in this way. In the rest of NZ, blind and low vision students go to their local school and are visited by a Resource Teacher of Vision. (RTV). Students request their resources and will have to wait for the next visit from the RTV to access their resources. An advantage of Manurewa Highs School Vision Resource Centre is that we have a trained Resource Teacher of Vision, Mrs B Biggs who also is the appointed Head of Department on site all day and everyday. Mrs M Capper, Mrs D Grey, Mrs H Wood, Mrs M Rowland, Mrs J Drever and Mrs J Fidow are employed as Teacher Aides. As a team, we support our students in the regular classes. Technology for the students who are blind and low vision has taken off in the last few years and we endeavor to keep up with the latest assistive technology developments. Apart from the Perkins Braillers, many of our students now use laptop computers with speech synthesis and magnification software as well as digital cameras to capture work from the whiteboard. They also use BrailleNotes (braille input computers) including access to internet and windows based programmes. We are continually updating and amending our huge resource collection of Braille, Large print and electronic document materials and therefore ensuring that the students who attend the resource centre have a superb resource immediately to hand on site.
Students in the Vision Resource Centre participated in Immersion Courses held by BLENNZ (Blind and Low Vision Network New Zealand) where they developed their life skills and accessed the Expanded Core Curriculum. The students took part in learning to plan a menu, shop the ingredients and cook the meal. They get the opportunity to meet other students who are blind or low vision from all over New Zealand who attend schools in their local areas. Lots of friendships are built this way. From the self evaluation given orally by each student at the end of the Immersion Courses, it was a very enjoyable and worthwhile course, with requests to continue with further such courses where young people who are blind and low vision feel they can experience and build on learning, in a supportive environment. They also attended Recreation and Music Camps. As to be expected there was lots of fun, games and laughter, but also time for more serious things like practising together to perform an item at the Music Concert that marks the highlight of the Music Camp. All students leave the Music Camp feeling inspired. We are proud of the achievements of our students in the area of Sport, Music and Academics. We had Tara Lynne Smith (13MO) competing at World Class Competitions in swimming and Judo. Tara left us in Term 2 to aspire her sporting career. All the girls in the Vision Resource Centre participated in the Auckland Regional Girls Athletic Day at Mt Smart Stadium in Penrose. Sarah (Thi) Tran (09BA), Michelle Kumar (11MT), Karley Bergersen (11HY) and RanaMaree Brown (12SJ) were all awarded with a Certificate and a Sport Badge at the Sport Prize giving Ceremony. Ekta Kumar (12SJ) is in Auckland Choral Society Choir. She completed an Advanced Level Graded Examination in Music Performance Grade 6 through the Trinity College London. Joshua Nathan (10CC) plays in the Junior Concert Band. Last year
RanaMaree Brown (12SJ) received a Merit Award in Year 11 Maths. This year we say goodbye to Anna Love (Yr13 PL) who will be going on The Kickstart Experience at BLENNZ (A programme designed to support students who are Blind and Low Vision as they transition from secondary school to tertiary education, employment and independent living) Our students are fully integrated into the regular classes and we do look forward to great results as they achieve in their efforts.

English Department It is Summer It is summer. A warm, fruity breeze streams through the only window in the kitchen. Through the window, the sun filters through the blooming Pohutakawa, casting shadows on a pile of tyres and rusted metal. A boat sits in the driveway out of use, covered in leaves and other rotting plant debris. Over the brown corrugated iron fence, a woman chases her laundry on the washing-line spinning in the wind; while her child climbs the white trellis, a malicious grin on his face, his laughter caught by the southerly.

My Aunty, closest to the door moves backwards in the chair, it grinds across the floor. She walks outside to the gate. I hear the chain slinking around the metal pole, the gate creaking as it is opened, a deep thump as the two bodies embrace. Silence‌ The visitor erupts in shrill wailing and screeching. A flock of birds fly out of a nearby tree in fright.
Listen, outside life goes on. Over the fence, a chainsaw roars, dogs bark, cars rumble, birds sing, cicadas chirp, people laugh and scream. Inside, the old refrigerator hums, clocks tick, the tap drips, my cousin beats a repetitive tune on her toy keyboard.
It is summer, but one would hardly think it as the miserable chill consumes the house; sneaking under each door, penetrating my heart. Three of us sit around the scarred oak table, large mugs of tea in front of us. No one talks; the wailing of our thoughts drowns any attempt to. Panes of glass are missing from the cabinet doors, exposing glass jars, biscuit tins, Tupperware and chipped vases; a tower dangerously balanced. Food Technology Year 10 Product Launch Food technology, or ‘cooking’ as it used to be known in earlier school years, is far more involved these-days than throwing a few ingredients together.
Teacher in charge Mrs Colleen Jacobs says the annual event was once again “a huge success, with the standard of work continuing to improve every year”.
During term three, yr10 food technology students battled it out in the kitchen as well as in the marketplace, taking part in a Product Launch which tested their business acumen as much as their cooking skills. The Product Launch was an opportunity for students to design, prepare, market and launch a nutritious snack food. Students were expected to follow the design process which involved research, design, develop, costing, surveys and packaging.
The winners for the 2009 Product Launch were Robert Samupo, Elizabeth Filimoemaka and Moana Ageli who took first place. Gomathi Rajasekaran and Tracy Clifton came second with Rachel Wass, JamieLee Tipene, Faith Nepe and Linda Te Arll coming third.
Table Setting Experience My table setting experience was cool. This year was my first time competing in a New Zealand competition. There were so many different types of competitions and a lot of competitors. It wasn’t as pressuring as regional’s. I had a lot of fun that day with my mate Omeka and Mary who came along with us. We took this competition as a joke just wanting to be happy and cheeky. We were told to go and set like we were the best there and the richest looking guys, that look professional. It came to our competition and we had to look smart. Just as we walked in, we made the first mistake, we were told by the judges to go back and register at the office desk. Then we started 5
minutes after. At prize giving I got a silver medal. I was placed second best in New Zealand Secondary Schools table setting. It was a cool experience. A lot of practice was put into this, after school and also during. The people there were all professionals, and talented and skilled. I and Omeka were the youngest competitors in the culinary fair. I also had fun. Thanks to Mrs Chandra for the opportunity.
Barista Awards
But to my surprise and with tremendous help from Mrs D Chandra the impossible became possible here, with 2 weeks of sacrificing my intervals, lunches and
after school time to do nothing but practice and practice. From grinding my coffee beans to perfecting tamping with the correct pressure to timing my extraction down to the ultimate second. Frothing my milk, pouring my coffees, all I could think was “what have I gotten myself into”. Then before I knew it the big day had finally arrived. Chez Panapa

Yr 13 Geography MURAWAI
It was a bright sunny day that the Yr 13 Geography students travelled to the beautiful beaches of Muriwai, where we combined fun with education. On our arrival at Muriwai, we journeyed up the steep staircases to the lookout area where we drew our first field sketch of the landscape, taking our first steps into a geographer’s world. In the midst of admiring the natural landscape of the wave cut platform, Fisherman’s Rock, a large wave took us by surprise and knocked some of us off our feet with its force, breaking jandals and soaking shorts.
ROTORUA
The end of August brought the much anticipated camp for the Yr 13 Geography classes. On the 26th of August we set out to Rotorua to discover its natural and cultural attractions. Our first stop was the Rotorua museum which originally was the local bath house. There we split into two groups where one went off in exploration of the antique bath house, while the others viewed an intriguing screening of the origins of tourism in Rotorua, combined with the local Maori legends. Then to further expand our knowledge we attended a detailed lecture of the history of Rotorua.
The last day involved a nice leisurely drive back to school, with a stop at Skyline Skyrides for a good time riding on the gondola and racing on the luge.
Te Puia was next on our itinerary. The authentic Maori welcome and waiata performance was an experience we’ll never forget. After the show we explored the grounds of Te Puia, some of us seeing kiwi birds for the first time. Continuing with our educational path, we collected data for a beach profile, which was a helpful skill to acquire. After all our hard work, it was time to play and we headed back up to the café for a well deserved lunch.
Day two led us to a long walk down Fenton St, recording the distribution of the accommodation. Afterwards, there was the visit to the agrodome where we observed a performance consisting of welltrained sheep, dogs and ducks. That afternoon was action packed and full of adrenaline & adventure. From the Swoop to the Bungy, the jet boat to the sky-dive, activities were everywhere to test our courage. After those fast-paced activities, we relaxed with the option of either soaking in the Polynesian Spa or a laid back movie at the local theatre.
It was an awesome year for the Year 13 Geography classes this year and I’m sure we all have memories from our trip that will last a lifetime.
We were then led to the geysers, anticipating its eruption. During the wait, we warmed our cold bottoms on the warm thermal rocks. The geyser eruption was no disappointment and it reached heights of 20-30 metres.
Thank you to the teachers, Ms Vass, Miss Glendinning and Mr Hendrikse, for putting up with our occasional misdemeanours and our clashing personalities for the whole year.

Yr 12 Geography Year 12 Geography went on a trip to Tongariro National Park as part of one of the many assessments we had to complete. We stayed in great accommodation for 3days, and we must say it was worth the money spent for it. Not only did we have to pass our assessment individually but we also had to show great leadership and teamwork to complete the set task. We got to experience the beauty of one of New Zealand’s dormant Volcanoes with Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngaruhoe. We had three awesome tour guides Ms Vass, Mr Hendricks and Ms Glendinning that made our trip worth while. We faced a lot of unexpected obstacles like super cold weather and waking up extremely early, being prepared for long walks throughout the day and worst of all climbing up and down the dangerous cliff in such extreme weather conditions in order to reach Fairy Falls. We enjoyed each and every moment spent at Tongariro and we gained a lot more knowledge and motivation towards Geography.
Urban Field Trip being developed and we learnt about all the new housing developments such as terrace housing and new appartments. Over all the urban field trip of Auckland was a good learing experience about our city.

Year 12 Geography studied Auckland for our urban topic and took a day trip to some of Auckland’s suburbs. The first stop was Mt Eden. We went to the top and learned about the different parts of Auckland and where they are located. Next we took the bus into Auckland’s CDB. We did some field work in groups about the heights of the buildings on Queen Street and also how many different types of shops there are such as real estate, cafes and retail stores and at the same time we got to enjoy the variety of ethnic groups in the CBD. Next on our trip we went to the Auckland water front and we studied the age groups of people that lived in that area also the type of jobs that they had. This was very different compared to when we went to Glen Innes. There were more people walking around on the streets and the housing was extremely different. Near the end of the day we got to kick back and relax at Mission Bay and enjoy the beautiful weather and scenery. Last on our trip we went to Botany and looked at the industrial areas and the different companies that are located there. Alot of Botany is still

Languages Japanese We took a group of Year 10 to 13 students to Japan in April for 2 weeks. Special thanks to Mr Wilson, Deputy Principal who accompanied the trip and for all of his help. It was spring time in Japan so the tour of Japan was absolutely stunning as we saw hundreds of cherry trees in full blossom. The brevity and beauty of the cherry blossoms are symbolic of the human existence and we were extremely lucky to go exactly in the middle of the very short season. The visit to the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb drop site, and the Hiroshima Peace Park was an eye opener for our young people. They got to see for themselves the absolute devastation of the bomb along with artefacts and bits of human remains in the museum. An experience like that supersedes normal learning that can be done inside a classroom. We visited 5 major cities in 2 weeks, including Osaka, Kyoto, Himeji, Hiroshima, Tokyo and Takasaki. We saw a huge variety of sights from the very modern fashions of Tokyo, technology trends, and cosplay to the beautiful ancient temples and traditional shrines of Kyoto. Of course Japanese food is just amazing, both traditional and modern, the kids tucked into gigantic ice-cream
sundaes and drank every imaginable fizzy drink on the planet. We also had fun times at Karaoke, Tokyo Disneyland, Harajuku and a Ninja village. The students were able to absorb for themselves the language and culture they are studying. The highlight of our trip was to continue our 18 year sister school relationship with Takasaki Higashi High School. We received a very warm welcome from the Principal and staff there via a special whole school assembly. Our students were challenged by attending classes in an education system vastly different from what they are used to, and got to live with Japanese families. The hospitality we received was amazing and the insight into authentic Japanese culture and lifestyle truly made for treasured memories.
Year 9 and 10 Students made their own Obento (Japanese Lunch Boxes) and did an excellent job. Year 12 and 13’s also did Japanese cooking this year. Special thanks to Ms Tihore for letting us use the Whare kitchen.
International Languages Week, August We had a foreign film festival, daily greetings and quizzes, games and prizes. Also we participated in the Auckland Museum Cultural Festival. We took 21 Students to the city for a day of Japanese culture. They enjoyed Taiko drums, calligraphy, Meishi exchange and dressing up in Japanese costumes. We went to Tanuki’s Japanese restaurant for a lunch of authentic Japanese food then to the $3 Japan shop on Queen street.
French will give students an authentic experience of French language and culture. Darci Morunga in year 11 has decided to take part in the Tahiti exchange and will be going to Tahiti alone for 4 weeks during the Christmas break. She will be staying with a French family and attending some school there. We look forward to hearing all about
it when she returns and, no doubt, she will be speaking this beautiful language even better!

The French students have been involved in some fun extra curricular activities this year. Year 12 went to the Rialto cinema in Newmarket to watch “Asterix” which was shown during French film festival week in Auckland. The main actor was Gerard Depardieu. This helped them when later doing a module on a film study. Year 10 and 11 went to the French restaurant “Torchon” and “Pastis” in Auckland city centre. It was a really fun experience as all the waiters spoke to us mainly in French! We had galettes and crepes for dessert! MMM, c’était très bon! Next big thing we hope to do is to visit a French speaking country for real! Tahiti is the destination if all goes to plan. This

Maori WHAIA TE ITI KAHURANGI KI TE TUOHU KOE ME HE MAUNGA TEITEI” “SEARCH FOR GREAT THINGS IF ONE HAS TO BOW LET IT BE TO A LOFTY MOUNTAIN” This ‘whakatauaki’ or proverbial saying is most often used to inspire generations to aspire, to succeed, to aim high, to achieve ones’ goals in life and to work to the best of ones’ ability. Kapa Haka 2009 has been an adventurous year. Aspirations, success and celebration were achieved. Long hours of hard work put in by students gained trophy’s for this year’s performance at the ASB polyfest hosted by Wesley College. An astounded performance at the quality of the competitors came from a multitude of cultures. ASB Polyfest highlighted the passion and pride, and the discipline and commitment of all. Congratulations’ to all whom participated in particular to Velma Siteine for her immense contribution to the Maori club over the years. We wish her well for her future aspirations. packed their bags to enjoy the great o u t d o o r s and fulfil the practise of Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, Rangatiratanga and most importantly Wairuatanga. MATARIKI was celebrated by the whole department and enjoyed by many. Hangi preparation started the night before with harmonious, hard working hands. The celebrations started with exciting students whom assembled in Te Poho o Manurewa to welcome guests. Everything fell into place; students took on great leadership without a word dressed tables and decorated the hall. What a sight! The day went well, Matariki was a success. Music Department 2009 has been a year of considerable achievement in the music classroom and in quality public performances by a wide range of ensembles. The major focus for term one was preparing our Senior Concert Band to open the widely billed ‘Karaka Concert.’ New repertoire was prepared suitable for an Auckland-wide audience of Rotarians and their friends. Arrangements of music form the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Les Miserables’ were well chosen and the band enjoyed learning them. Considerable commitment was required from all players and staff to ensure that both appearances – Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon - went without a hitch – and they did. The band was widely commended for its high standard of presentation and performance. However the undoubted highlight of 2009 was a tour to Brisbane of the Senior Concert Band in July. After two years of fundraising, this was a wonderfully happy and rewarding trip. While in Queensland, the band worked very hard with Miss Huang, they leant a new, more challenging repertoire and presented performances and workshops at three highly prestigious schools. In addition students and staff had great fun together at Australia Zoo, Dream World, and in the pool at Surfers Paradise Apartments. We are all enormously grateful to Mr Wilson – tour leader – for taking care of all the ‘logistics’ for us and leading the tour with such good humour.
bands have continued to perform well at school which augurs well for the future. A new choir rehearsal time was established - after school on Mondays at 4:30pm. Attendance did require real commitment from students but the benefit of an uninterrupted 90 minutes rehearsal time paid dividends with a ‘commended’ performance in ‘The Big Sing’ and three extremely well received public performances later in the year. The assistance of Jeffery Chang (choir conductor and vocal tutor) and Mrs Louman (pianist) added to the success of the choir. Three of our students performed on stage with ‘The Steelers’ in the ‘Band of Strangers’ Concert and a full bus load of students enjoyed dressing up and spending a night at the opera watching ‘Eugene Onegin’ by Tchaikovsky. It was also a pleasure to host the stage band and choir from Westlake Boys High School for a morning concert in our hall. Performance assessment evenings have been especially memorable this year, a notable one held at Nathan Homestead featuring all our vocalists who are students of Mrs Linda Kitchen. Not only do our students earn valuable NCEA credits on such occasions, but their parents and families can come and enjoy the quality of the music making. Music has continued to be a significant
I wish to thank sincerely my Assistant HoD Mr Randle and our new teacher Mr Coulomb, both of whom work tirelessly and passionately to pass on their love of music to our students. We are also very grateful for the work of our music coordinator Mrs Elaine Girdwood, who has fitted so well into her role this year. Miss Huang and all our other itinerant tutors are an enormous support and without them our music department could not function as it does. Best wishes to all senior students who are leaving us. Mr Shannon Coulomb joined our music staff this year and it was his enthusiasm, coupled with Mr Randle’s expert guidance, that resulted in fine performances by ‘Lotus’ in the Smoke free Rock Quest and the Jazz Band in the KBB fringe festival. Both the Senior and Junior concert bands played well in the KBB festival and in addition two woodwind ensembles took part in the annual Secondary School Chamber Music festival. All these

The Mathex is that This was a particularly fast and furious competition for our mathematicians First came the local run-up to the main thing – this was our internal school competition to decide which class would represent the school at the regional South – Auckland Secondary Schools competition which was held at Pukekohe High School. 9 KD and 10HU took out the school competition which meant they were our official representatives for 2009-11-19 They then went on to the South Auckland Secondary Schools Mathex competition which was held at Pukekohe High School. Both teams were just beaten at the post for a podium finish, ending up fourth in their respective competitions. From here the teams went on to the main competition which was held at the ASB stadium. Science Department Asian Science Camp The 2009 Asian Science camp took place in ‘Science City’ (Tsukuba, Japan) during the week of 3rd to 7th August. I was fortunate to be sponsored to attend as accompanying teacher, travelling with four students to represent New Zealand. Emily Cole from St Cuthberts, Andi Liu from Palmerston North Boys’ High School and myself – Fenella Colyer from Manurewa High School, were all sponsored by the Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery. Two other students, Hugh McHugh from Gisborne and Georgia Stewart from Wellington, were sponsored by another institute. The event was characterised by extremely high quality lectures presented by Nobel Laureate speakers of considerable note in the scientific community. The goal was to pull together the top young scientific talent within Asia in order to expose them to high level and cutting edge research, and to facilitate their future networking. The concept is that they will become the scientific leaders of the future and will already have a ‘jump start’ on international

Their attendance and behaviour at the events was exemplary and they all return to their schools richer in experience and enthusiasm, and with new friendships intact. Without the sponsorship and support of the Maurice Wilkins Centre I would not have been afforded this excellent opportunity and would like to extend my gratitude for the experience of a life time. I hope to ‘infect’ my students, both present and future, with some of the excitement and optimism that the Science Camp engendered in me. Hopefully, our school will soon be fortunate enough to have a deserving student selected to follow in my footsteps. Mrs F Colyer Accompanying Teacher

The annual MIT Manukau City Science and Technology Fair was held in August and the Prize Giving evening went ahead on Wednesday 26th August. Our students were, once again, very successful and came away with a number of prizes and awards, including the prestigious Premier Award for Best Project overall. It was a pleasure to see our students walk up and take away First Place for Best Project in year 10, year 11, year 12 and year 13! The work they delivered was of a high scientific quality and showed evidence of creativity, perseverance and good time management, as well as pleasing presentation skills. By taking this opportunity and making the most of it, these students will have not only won cash awards and scholarships, but have also given themselves future access to events such as Science Camp, Space Camp, Otago Science week, Biofutures Conference and more. Without concrete
cooperation and communication in order to collaborate whilst dealing with the many challenges and global issues that the world will face. The students, who numbered over 200 from countries as far afield as Turkey and Israel, attended lectures, small group discussions with scientists, called “camps” and also participated in a poster competition where their brief was to display their new knowledge on selected topics in an imaginative and creative manner. They were also taken on trips to venues such as the Japanese equivalent of NASA, known as JAXA, as well as to a Particle Accelerator , a working mine, a traditional Japanese barbecue, shopping in Tokyo, museums, and an ancient temple. These events served to further heighten interest in science, to enhance inter country and inter student bonding and to enlighten us all about Japanese culture. I can say in all honesty that I myself feel that I came away with a renewed sense of excitement about the huge potential inherent in the field of science, as well as a greater depth of understanding of other cultures and how the Language of Science crosses barriers and facilitates cooperation and even friendship. PE Department What a year for the PE and Health department in 2009. It all started with the departure of two key figures of the department. Mr Pete ‘Liverpool for ever’ Jones (HOD 2006 -2008) was promoted to Deputy Principal following in the footsteps of our predecessor Barry Williams. The department is coping quite well without their father figure, although it seems he misses us, as he is a regular visitor to our neck of the woods. Then Louise Maassen (TiC of Health) decided to challenge herself by taking on the role of HOD at One Tree Hill College after 7 years at Manurewa High. Luckily for the department we managed to snare, from enemy territory namely Christchurch, Ms ‘Highlighter’ Pattinson, who decided to leave the cold Ranfurly Shield-less Canterbury to take over the rather large shoes left by Miss Maassen and take over as TiC of Health. Also, to fill the roster, Miss ‘Casper’ Hunter was brought into the team. She bought a bucket load of enthusiasm and ideas from her 4 years at Auckland University into the fold. They both fitted in tremendously well with the school and they have added value to the department. So with the departure of two senior team members we were fortunate to have in our midst Miss Story, who has been at Rewa for 8 years. She was a natural fit to become our esteemed leader and Miss ‘Sarah’ Spraggon who started her tenure in 2005, was assigned Assistant HOD. Not only that, the team has remained consistent with Mr ‘Golf
Academy’ Render, Mr ‘Rugby Academy’ Clemas, Miss ‘Mean Maori Mean’ McCall, Miss ‘Outdoor Education’ Kiff, Miss ‘I’m so creative’ Snelgrove, and Miss ‘Woop Woop’ Burnside making up the team. The breadth and depth of talent in the department coupled with their energy, commitment and teamwork ensures the students get the very best from which to learn. It’s not only the department that has gone through changes, but also our facilities. At the beginning of term three, we were very pleased to acquire a new gym and fitness suite. It has been used extensively and it’s been great to have a new space for students and staff alike. Our courses continue to go from strength to strength with a plethora of courses from which our seniors can choose. We now have the highest number of students ever in both Physical Education and Health in Manurewa’s history. New additions this year included: Level 3 Outdoor Education and Level 3 Health. Next year, we introduce Level 1 Sport Leadership, Level 2 Outdoor Education and CV6 line options. Our juniors are not being neglected, as we are introducing junior option classes to compliment our Year 9 Sport Studies and Year 10 Sport Academy. In addition to this, the revised junior programme has been well received by students. We have continued to offer co-curricular opportunities within the school for students and staff including: Push Play Week, Activities Day, Tournament Day, Fun Day and lunchtime sports. This has been a great way to keep our students active and another opportunity to interact well with others and build relationships between
staff and students. The students have been offered a wide range of learning opportunities in which to develop their knowledge and skills. They have experienced new challenges in a number of contexts such as camps, field trips, coaching sessions and their everyday lessons. We feel it is important to build links with our local community and we look forward to developing this relationship further. Next year we have the new curriculum, with the department geared up and ready to go. Again we have huge numbers of the department involved in the Taupo relay walk/run, new changing room facilities are in the strategic plan and we welcome back Mr Greenwood, all the way from England, who departed our shores at the end of 2005. Another goal for the department is to regain the staff ‘quiz night’ competition and bring it home to its rightful place (excuses, excuses). Finally, it is always the departments’ intention to see the students continue to strive for excellence and to leave our courses with key skills and positive traits. These may include: Self-responsiblity, showing initiative, having a positive attitude, demonstrating leadership, developing confidence, building resilience, displaying a solid work ethic. Students also need to be effective communicators, have an understanding of well being and possess physical skills. Overall we want them to be life long learners and when they leave our school we hope they have a passion for Physical Education and Health.

Outdoor Education Outdoor Education 2009 As the founding members of Outdoor Education at Manurewa High School, or the guinea pigs as we call ourselves, this year has been a huge learning experience. We have pushed our limits tramping through mud and rain in the Waitakere Ranges, building fires and huts in the bush and running a camp for year nines and tens. We have had year of laughter and fun, doing things a lot of us probably would never have thought we would or could do. As a class, we have grown into a family, which made the year all the more enjoyable. Our teacher, Miss Kiff, has put up with our nonsense, which a lot of teachers wouldn’t, and has been a great role model for us. We wish next year’s class good luck. It’s not what you expect it to be…It’s better (:

Young Enterprise Scheme Young Enterprise is about students forming their own company and selling something to make a profit. It is completely student based and all money made as profit (after tax is paid, of course!) is for the students to keep. This is real and fun and exciting especially because money is involved and who doesn’t want money? In 2009 some year 13 students formed their own company and decided to do event management. They went to business planning competitions at Telstra Clear Events Centre and made it to the finals where they even dressed up as old fashioned debutantes and their partners complete with hats,
moustaches and canes! And to end the year with, they were invited to Villa Maria Vineyard to celebrate another successful year of YES. All in all, a lot of fun was had by all!

International Week The main purpose of International Week is to celebrate our own culture and to learn a little more about the culture of other people at Manurewa High school. We need to know more about each other for a better student environment and a more cohesive learning process. The International Week was established to help build bridges between different students and create a friendlier atmosphere. We need to experience and celebrate the diversity of cultures available at this school as a great gift and an opportunity that is not present in every school in New Zealand. International day involves a lot of different activities: Flag carrier’s process into the hall at the opening and closing ceremony, an incredibly popular food day, a costume day where students can wear the national dress of theirs or others country, a concert day and more. The International Week organizers were especially pleased at the great turnout and participation of students and staff during the 2009 International week festival. Many thanks to Mrs Shareef who has taken up the rather large mantel of ‘head organiser’ for this year, she did a wonderful job.
“Just having difference among us is not enough. It is EASY to dodge the opportunity of difference. We do it everyday. Expanding the We here is not enough. It doesn’t really change a thing. What we must seek to do, is to ‘create a more porous I’. We need to be willing to open ourselves to take in the difference”.

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2009
Rugby Report 2009 again saw a year of successful team achievement, close losses, undying courage and spirit as well as excitement and fun! In fact that could describe any given Saturday of rugby at Manurewa High School. With record numbers this season of over 220 registered players, Rugby is by far the biggest participant sport at Manurewa High School. So we start this report by thanking all the players from 1st XV to U/14 for carrying on a great tradition.
MHS Rugby Academy Teams 1st XV
2nd XV This team provided the upset of the season leading Wesley 1st XV at halftime of their opening match. Unfortunately injuries and promotion of some players to the 11st XV meant that the team narrowly missed making the top 4 of the competition. In atrocious weather they lost to James Cook 1st XV, a team they had beaten twice, in the final of the CMRU plate 1st XV competition. This squad showed huge spirit and commitment throughout the season and always tried to display a brand of rugby that was exciting to watch and I am sure most enjoyable to play. Many players stood out and showed what a promising future they will have in the 1st XV next year. The development of their scrum was most encouraging as without exception they held their own against every team and even pushed our 1st XV scrum on occasions when they faced off during the round robin. Thanks to Coach Kere Maihi and assistant coach Keith Kakahi for their outstanding efforts in moulding this young 2nd XV in the 1st XV grade.
U/15 Gold The U/15 team had the most successful season winning their final against Wesley College 14=13 who are ranked in the top 4 U/15 teams in NZ. Added to this the team played an invitation game against Waikato U/15 provincial squad in October as cam away with a most memorable victory 2619. This team is full of outstanding talent and some players will certainly see promotion directly to the 1st XV next year. Coaches Tom Baniani and Lance Rakuraku are to be congratulated on an excellent performance and the championship win, especially given the difficult personal circumstances Tom suffered with the tragic loss of his son Tom junior, a former member of the Rugby Academy. The School and Rugby Fraternity again give our sincere best wishes and thoughts to his family. Also special thanks to hard working Paul Paraha, the team Manager and his wife Dorothy, who ably supported the team throughout the year. Well done boys and a great victory.
Girls 1st XV
80
Another exciting and year and another final reached by our Girls 1st XV. Alas this year they were unsuccessful in a hard fought final against Onehunga however they played with determination and courage and can be proud of their efforts in 2009. Unbeaten all year, apart from their last game, they again showed the immense amount of talented female rugby players we have and can develop at MHS. Credit for this again goes to Coach Melina Martene who was ably assisted by Oka Autagavaia. Together they are a formidable team for our young women to follow and our school is extremely lucky to have them at the helm of Girls rugby – thank you ladies. The team was again well managed and supported by staff member Donella McPherson, who is provides huge inspiration to the team through her work ethic and positive attitude – a huge thank you to Donella. MHS Flying Eagles Rugby
3rd & 4th XV With enormous interest and excitement over 60 players were available to play for the 3rd XV this year which resulted in the birth of a 4th XV (in fact we probably could have fielded a 5th team if we had a coach). Herein lay the problem for our boys in 2009 – we simply could not get a coach for each team and hence we had to rotate the squad around one coach – so a huge vote of thanks and praise must go to Glen Goodwin, from our ground staff, who stepped up to coach these teams. He was also assisted by staff member Alan Williams, in a managerial role, as well as his son Shane Goodwin who assisted at training - a big thank you to these people. With many games being defaulted by opposition and the confusion surrounding who was in which team we did not have as a successful season as we had hoped. Thanks to the loyal bunch of boys who trained and turned up – we hope you had some fun as this is the essence of Eagles Rugby. We hope all returning players will give the 1st and 2nd XV trials a crack next year and we will do our best to find some coaches? Any staff members available next year?
U/15 Green Coach Harold So’e has so much enthusiasm that it would be fair to say he could bottle it and sell “enthusiasm elixir” on Trade Me and still have plenty

The 1st XV had a memorable season that included retaining the Terry Burns Cup in our annual match with James Cook, touring Samoa in October as well as making the final of the CMRU competition. Unfortunately after giving their opposition too big a lead in the first half, they lost the final to Wesley but put in a strong 2nd half performance to score 4 tries which is the most that team conceded all year. With 13 players leaving this year it will be a virtually new squad for 2010. Led from the front by Captain and hooker Michael Peti, who was unlucky to be injured near the end of the season, the front row laid the foundation. Along with Italia Hunt, Jarred Iosefa and NZ U/17 trialist Nephi Leatigaga MHS front row was one of the strongest in recent years. Lock and most improved player Patrick Sao along with loose forwards Chris Masaga, LJ Fepuleai and Roy Sa’u provided the basis of some quality set phase possession and quick secondary ball. The back division led by player of the year Clayton Ngawharau, displayed skill, speed and sleight of hand to score many exciting tries. He was supported through great efforts from Fullback & Head Boy Haze White Miller, wingers Alex Mase, Mike Timai, utility Eru Rogers and the remaining back division of Josh Tafili, Maili Kaifoto, Liveti Liveti, Alex Robertson, Daryl Maoate and Siamani Pese. Strong forward support also came from back up hooker Roy Sembrano, lock Chris Leatinuu and Ermreck Brown. A special thank you to Grant Ferguson coach who, after 5 years with the Rugby Academy, has decided to have a
season off next year. Well done “Ferg” and thank you for the inspiration, guidance and aroha you have provided this group. Also thanks to Manager Sandra Shaw, Assistant Coaches Neil Hunt and Hekorase Peti as well as the loyal band of parents and supporters who followed the team this year.
MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2009
spare. Along with assistant coach Henry Siva and Manager Alan De Beer they all put the “sweat on the grass” with our U/15 Eagles in 2009. This happy band of brothers continually fronted each week and played with enthusiasm and an improving level of accuracy that showed the hard work they had put into training. Sure some of the guys could have improved their fitness but one could see this improvement as the season came to a close – maybe a bit more pre-season running may help next year boys. Alas all that training and “stuff” is not the essence of Eagles Rugby nonetheless this team played well. In fact if not for a mix up with results sheets they should have made the semi finals of the U/15 grade. Well done for a good hard Rewa High season!

Summary & Thanks With such a big sport we need a lot of help and support so thanks goes to •The Senior Leadership team led by Mrs Dixon and Mrs Shaw for their continued support. •The Board of Trustees for sharing their “trust” and supporting our vision. •All staff who assisted and supported. •All parents and caregivers for their encouragement and support. •John Hynds from Hynds Corporation our major sponsor for their sponsorship and support. •Panasonic and Works Infrastructure for their sponsorship. •Wiri Licensing Trust and Nautilus Foundation for their support for the tour of Samoa. •And last but by no means least our former Principal Richard Thornton who left us this year. Without his undying support of all school sports, including rugby, we simply could not be where we are in 2009. Thank you Richard and we look forward to still seeing you on the sideline continuing to offer your vocal and moral support. We are still very vulnerable with our Rugby program at MHS. We now struggle for coaches and have more players than we can accommodate. There is the threat
from CMRU to give age grade rugby back to the clubs. We have faced various challenges before and we will do so again of that there is no doubt. We will work hard to overcome these challenges and continue to provide the best rugby opportunities for our students and people. The people who have gone before us have earned the right for MHS to stand tall in NZ Secondary School rugby circles. We are not a “joke” decile 2 school from South Auckland; full of bad kids and slack attitudes. If you believe that then that is what you will be. No we are Manurewa High School and we have built a tradition of excellence. As I continually say to our players on the field “Work Hard, Smart and Earn what you get”. Local police recruiting Officer Lenny Johnson took the reins of our U/14 team and with only 3 teams in their grade they struggled through a season which was hard to get inspired about. Some weeks their expected opposition defaulted and this was hard on a group that was full of enthusiasm and skill. Not surprisingly they made the final which they lost and although some players went “MIA” during the season we must congratulate the hardy bunch who stuck together each week. I was lucky to witness some early games and their 69-3 defeat of Papakura High was one of the most entertaining games of rugby I watched all year – including the All Blacks! To the returning players in 2010 please get your heads around an exciting opportunity with our U/15 squads next year. Thanks to coach Lenny and as he will not be available next year however we hope to announce an exciting new innovation with coaching this grade very soon – watch this space.
because Tali looks grumpy doesn’t mean I am grumpy!) but in the end we had a great day and made the final. Unfortunately we played MHS “A” team in the final – who were far and away the most skilled team there. We pushed them hard, played with guts and guile but did not have the firepower to win the final. So overall a great result for MHS Girls a 1st and 2nd place. We look forward to a repeat performance next year.
Girls 10 a-side A & B The girls 10-s-side is a one day tournament held between all Counties Manukau Rugby affiliated schools. Held on a sunny but very cold day this year I was very thrilled to be asked to coach the Girls “B” team. I don’t know how thrilled they were with me (just

Girls Rugby The Girl 1st XV Rugby Team has once again had a very successful year. While the end result was not as many would have liked the team worked hard to maintain the high standards set by coaching staff Melina Martene and Oka Autagavaia. 2008 saw the loss of key players particularly in the forward pack and while senior players stepped up to shoulder the load there was a settling in period for all players. Round robin play was executed with the flair and huge scores the school have come to expect from the team. The exception to this was the game against Onehunga where Manurewa narrowly won the game 14-13. Onehunga proved to be our toughest opponent of the season. With the wins in the round robin the team placed first in Counties-Manukau and progressed to the Auckland final. The final was played at Western Springs against Onehunga and while the willingness to succeed was evident the 50-50 calls did not go our way and for only the second time over three years the team suffered a loss as Onehunga went up 10-7 in the final minutes of the game. 2009 saw lessons learned by the team including how important trainings and fitness are to ensuring success at a top level. Overall the team did extremely well and deserved the acknowledgement of Team of the Year for the third year in a row. Long serving players Captain Lana Westerlund, Talisua Tipelu, Tina Sione, Lofi Falala lead from the front as they consistently gave 100% every game.
Much of the success of the team can be attributed to Coaches Melina and Oka and the skills and knowledge they give the players. Without them the team would not be as successful. This success has meant many of the team were selected for the Counties-Manukau Secondary Schools team and include: Shannon-Lee Blackburn-Rangitaawa Kimberley Bouttavong Marama Davis MafofogaFa’alogo Cheryl Patu Putere Putairi Tina Sione Elizabeth Talatofi Talisua Tipelu Lana Westerlund
final was not the way we wanted to finish the year it has made the team face their inadequacies and as Melina has said – “a champion team is not how you win but how you come back from a loss.” The team will once again have high expectations in 2010. Lana Westerland (Captain) Donella McPherson (Manager)
From this team Lana Westerlund, Kimberley Bouttavong and Talisua Tipelu were also selected for the Northern Regions Team. While the loss at this years

Rugby Trip to Samoa College that won in the end, the final score, 29-14, not reflecting how close the game had been. In her after match speech, the Avele College principal, the only woman on the Samoan secondary schools’ rugby board, made it very clear that they indeed valued the chance to play a New Zealand school and particularly one with such close associations with Samoa. Getting away on the Manurewa High School sporting and cultural trip to Samoa between 11 and 19 October was never going to be easy. There was the short time frame, the constant fundraising and then there was the devastating tsunami that struck the southern coast of Samoa a week and a half before our departure. The high risk travel warning meant there was a very real chance that the trip would not go ahead and we all waited for confirmation that we could travel. When we did arrive, Samoa was a whole new world for a number of the 1st XV. But for some, it was good to be back in their homeland to visit families and re-experience their culture. The real focus was the challenge of playing rugby against two of the top secondary schools in Samoa, Avele and Wesley Colleges. In between there was the scenery and sights of a tropical paradise.
The fiafia show and dinner at Aggie Gray’s provided the team with the opportunity to share a little kiwi culture in Samoa when the team was invited to perform their haka as part of the show to family and hotel guests. Living with their families for three days in the villages gave the team a very real taste of Samoan life. The Robert Louis Stevenson museum gave another perspective of Samoan life while shopping in the flea market and the Apia Saturday
The members of this tour have been very fortunate to have been shown Samoa by Samoans. They are known for their hospitality and generosity and the 1st XV were definitely the grateful recipients of this kindness. Our very special thanks go to Mr Neil Hunt and his family, for without them this trip would not have been the success it was. Ferg and Mr Peti must be recognised for their coaching contribution and Mel for the on and off field support. Andrew Taliamanu’s support of rugby at Manurewa High School is already acknowledged. Thanks also go to the Nautilus Trust, Manurewa Rugby Club and Student Support for the funding and sponsorship that made this trip possible. This rugby tour to Samoa is a memory to keep forever. The heat and blazing sun took its toll right from the start with a training session at the local school. Fortunately, Princess Tui, the backpacker at which the team stayed, was across from the beach and it was straight into the sea as soon as practice had finished. The boys became more used to the sun and the high temperatures which was just as well as they continued to experience both while playing the game against Wesley. There was a large group of parents accompanying the tour and their enthusiastic support became even louder as Manurewa High School surged ahead in what began as a very tight game to a 10-6 win. It was good to become re-acquainted with Mr Logopati Mata’afa who is now Principal at Wesley College and who, a few years previously, had taught at Manurewa High School. Avele College is the top rugby school in Samoa and that was to be the next game. More than that, it is the coach’s, Mr Hunt, old school and it was a matter of playing for pride. The game was very competitive and see sawed back and forth but it was Avele
This trip was not simply about rugby. It was just as much about experiencing Samoan culture and there were plenty of opportunities to do that as well. The day after we arrived was White Sunday which is an important event on the Samoan calendar. The boys were billeted with their families for the day and took part in the festivities and huge feasts that mark the day. There was a bus trip around Upolu, first to hinterland villages and then on to the pristine beaches with turquoise water and white sands. However, the team was shocked by the damage resulting from the tsunami to the south coast villages and beach resorts. They saw homes and churches obliterated into rubble, cars tipped over, and could smell the foul sewerage that signalled the devastation that had occurred. The television pictures had told the real story and what we were seeing was an absolute disaster.
market provided plenty of variety. For Michael Peti, Andrew, Leveti, Clayton, Josh, LJ, Mr Peti, and Mel, tattoos are permanent souvenirs of their Samoan tour.
