From the Principal's Desk ... of students entering Australasian competitions and achieving outstanding results.

Examples of these include: Australasian Science 1 High Distinction, 26 Distinctions Chemistry 4 High Distinctions, 12 Distinctions

The Manurewa High School has completed another outstanding year. The school roll closed in March with 1868 students. Pressure for enrolments continues, and unfortunately many students have had to be declined places at our school.

However, the size of the school has brought with it considerable benefits of scale. The ability to offer a wide curriculum is one of these benefits. In 1998, in addition to delivering the full national curriculum, we were able to offer an increasing range of level 1 and 2 unit standards courses.

Examples of these include Hospitality and Catering and Tourism. In Years 9 and 10 technology has been integrated into the existing curriculum ready for full implementation in 1999.

To keep pace with the senior roll growth, and the extended curriculum, a number of building projects were completed during the year. A new commercial kitchen and restaurant (the first in a secondary school in New Zealand), a photographic dark room and a concert band room were examples of these. Planned for 1999 are a senior art studio, a new careers centre and extensions to the health centre.

Academic results were once again outstanding with many subject areas showing improved means and top marks in the School Certificate and Bursary examinations.

Particularly pleasing during the year were the increasing numbers

Maths 3 High Distinctions, 19 Distinctions English 4 High Distinctions, 10 Distinctions Also this year, The Manurewa High School was once again the top school in the Manukau Secondary Schools Science and Technology Fair. 28 entries were accepted, with five projects gaining 1st place, three projects the best awards for Forms 5, 6 and 7, and the premier award for the best exhibit of the Fair.

Shield competition. The annual Art exhibition once again demonstrated the high quality of art work being achieved in the school.

In the area of sports, an increasing number of students participated, and many teams gained 1st place in regional competitions, for example, Yr 9 Junior Gold Netball team, Senior Boys Basketball and the Senior Girls Badminton. The Senior Girls Touch Rugby team were runners up in the national finals.

Many students also achieved national selection in their various codes.

My thanks to the senior administration staff who continue to lead by example, the new Board of Trustees for their leadership and guidance and the PTA for their support. Thanks to the staff for their tremendous efforts during the year and their continued encouragement of our students to excel in our dynamic and busy school.

To support the teaching programme in the school, a learning support programme was developed ready for full implementation in 1999. In addition, a tutorial system was extended to include students who were 'borderline' and able students who were not performing to their potential.

Special thanks to Colin Hopkins and Hayley Rawhiti, Head Prefects and the Prefects team for their important role as student leaders. Also, a special thank you and acknowledgement of three long serving staff members who retired during the year, Miss H Gallot, Mrs B Price and Mrs Coles. Best wishes for a long and happy retirement.

This year has also been a particularly strong year for excellence in the Arts. The school's second CD "A Touch of Magic" was released, and sales are very strong.

The school concert band gained 1st place in the Auckland Secondary Schools Festival, and an award for the most outstanding performance.

During the year our large choir was disbanded, and in its place three choirs now exist. The school musical, "Half a Sixpence" was an outstanding success with new and young talent on display.

Thanks also to the magazine editor, Mrs H Kilgour and also to Mr R Kilgour for his willingness to be available to ensure that all school activities were photographed for publicity and the school magazine.

The magazine is indeed an outstanding record of the activities of our school throughout the year and the wealth of talent that exists.

Finally, my thanks to the senior students for their involvement with the school, and to all those leaving, best wishes for the future.

PTA Notes 1998 The 1998 Parent Teacher Association of The Manurewa High School was a small but very busy group in 1998.

This year we followed a new direction with less emphasis on fund raising and more emphasis on learning how we can do more for our students. We had a number of speakers at our meetings to keep parents abreast of what was happening in our school.

We would like xo thank the following speakers for giving up their own time to come along to our meetings and speak to us.

Mrs C Pritchard, the School Nurse, who spoke about her role in the school and some of the Health

Issues she deals with at Manurewa High School.

Mr T O'Dea, Sports Faculty Director, and Mr K McKay, Counties Manukau Sports Foundation, ex All White Soccer player (Member of the team which went to the World Cup Finals) from NZ's most successful soccer team, who explained the new Hilary Commission's programme, Coaches Count, and the sports resources available in the community.

Mrs M Turner, Careers Adviser at The Manurewa High School who ran a session on helping parents to assist their children with Career Planning. She covered Classroom 2

2000 considerations, PolyTech vs University, Traineeships, TOP's, and Subject Choices at The Manurewa High School.

I would also like to thank the Board of Trustees members who attended our meetings and kept us up to date with school governance issues and the School Administration Team who have supported us and who have kept us up to date with the school's successes through the year.

Mr Alderton was appointed Head of English and Miss Thomas Head of Drama.

Mr Stafford was on leave on a research fellowship at Auckland University.

Mrs Spear was appointed acting HOD Maths and Miss Roxburgh acting Assistant HOD Maths.

At the end of term one, four staff members were farewelled. Miss San Sebastian, Mrs Bleaken and Mr J Lamprill. Also, a long serving staff member, Miss Gallot retired after many years of service to the school.

A special function was held which many former colleagues attended.

At the commencement of term two, the following staff were appointed to replace those staff members who have left. Mr Lynch (French), Mrs Purcell (English) Mrs Wyness (English) and Mr Winn (PE).

At the commencement of term four, Mrs Nicholson was appointed Librarian and on 2 November Mr Leader commenced in a new position of Property Manager.

At the end of the year the following staff were farewelled. Miss Clark (Music) who has moved to another school, Mr Cook (LAD) who is pursuing another career, Mrs Coles (Guidance Counsellor) who has retired after many years of service, and Mrs Williams (Administration) who moved to Australia.

To all staff who have left during the year, we thank you for your contribution while you were at our school, and wish you every success in the future, either in a new position or retired.

This year's Dux is Ming-Chun Wu, Her academic accolades are many. She came first in Maths with Calculus, Maths with Statistics, Science, Physics and Chemistry. She is one of six ASB Scholars for 1998.

Not surprisingly, Ming-Chun has received many academic awards during her time at The Manurewa High School, particularly in Maths and Science. She has participated fully in the life of the school, and has participated in the Senior Debating Team, the Cultural Council, and the Librarian Team to mention a few of her involvements. Ming-Chun is to be congratulated on a very commendable achievement.

This award goes to Ryan Brightwell whose accolades include 1st equal in Mathematics with Statistics, and 1st in Classical Studies and English.

He was also an ASB Scholar, a member of the Prefect Team, and the 1st XV Rugby team. A great achievement.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE 1998.

What an exciting year it has been for me since being voted on to the Board Of Trustees of The Manurewa High School, it has been an experience that I feel very privileged to have had. During the year I have learnt many things about the school that a lot of people would not get a chance to do.

I would like to thank Mr. Thomson, Mrs. Dixon, Mrs. Danks (board secretary), Mrs. McGavin (minute secretary) and all members of the

board especially Miss Paterson, staff representative, for their support this year. I believe that the students of The Manurewa High School are very lucky to be in the hands of such a Board OE Trustees and have a team of staff that has the interests of the school and the interests of the pupils at heart.

Good luck to any person who wants to become the student representative in the future.

ASB Scholars This year's scholars were invited to a special luncheon hosted by the ASB and held at the Elleslie Convention Centre.

Each student was presented with a cheque for $150.00. The guest speaker for the occasion was Rob Hamill, who spoke of his experiences rowing around the world. Schools from all over Auckland were represented and a great time was had by all. A special thankyou to the ASB from all of this year's scholars.

1998 PREFECT TEAM The 1998 Prefect Team, well what can you say?

They started how they intended to finish, a fully-fledged team, that will undoubtedly be remembered. And not only for their constant but efficient encouragement to wear the Manurewa High School uniform with pride! But the way they made us laugh and cry by selling their bodies and minds to more willing bidders at the slave auction! Jeopardising their 'dignity' to gain profound amounts of cash for no-one but their fellow students.

The traditional event, the ball, organised by the awesome 30, gave us another memorable occasion.

Flaming fonts, the lift, the stairs, and dancing all night long. Where did this all start? A chemical reaction called prefect's camp. The ingredients shared rooms and food, spas and saunas, seminars, out of the hat dinner dates, near assassinations of members at the luge, and saving the lives of our dedicated principals on the white water adventure.

The prefect team this year really discovered the meaning of team work.

Auckland University Trip In the first week of the July school holidays we attended the 14th Annual Residential Seminar for Students of Exceptional Ability for students aged 13 to 18. We stayed at International House at Auckland University with 114 other students from around New Zealand; some coming from as far as Invercargill.

We all attended three hours of daily lectures on two topics of our own choice ranging from philosophy to Aero Space Engineering where students designed and launched their own rocket. The other options included law, psychology, logic, political studies, ancient history and computer studies. These topics gave us an insight into our career paths, allowing us to make more informed choices about our futures. We had

some prior knowledge of the areas concerned, but found that further knowledge gave us appreciation ranging from 'boring' to `wow'!!!

However life was not all work and no play with several outings including ice skating, Kelly Tarlton's, Auckland Museum, visiting the District and High Court, and a night out at the movies. Also included was an afternoon out on the town. All these activities allowed us to meet and make many new friends whom we are still in touch with via phone and e-mail.

Every night after classes in yoga, meditation and motivation, to name a few we were set free to mingle and play pool with our new found friends. Accommodation included a

single bedroom each with don heaters and warm brick walls. were served various and somet: unidentifiable food types common to our usual diet, althc most of us opted for the more option of 'Chicken Pie.' We met many 'weird and won& people on this one week serr and had many memorable and times. The real highlight was mi with other able thinkers who e. discussing unusual issues suci genetic engineering. This inch the teachers as well as the stuck All and all it was an excellent worthwhile experience!

Adult Community Education Over 1300 adults enrolled in a wide variety of courses offered in the evening Community Education Classes this year. All courses are very reasonably priced because they take advantage of the excellent computer and other facilities found at The Manurewa High School and Government sponsorship.

The majority of the classes are in computing.- Courses such as Introduction to Computers and Introduction to Word Processing run each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night and meet the needs of new computer users. They are always fully subscribed. These lead to Intermediate Computing or Word Processing, which teach more advanced skills. Other computer courses are Excel — the leading Windows spreadsheet, Access database, Desktop Publishing using MS Publisher - an excellent package for creating newsletters, flyers, brochures, cards, PowerPoint presentations, The Internet and Keyboard Skills. All those who complete the computer courses receive a certificate.

There are a number of NZOA accredited courses such as how to "Operate a Personal Computer" Unit Standard 2780. This is a 12week, basic computer qualification in caring for and maintaining a computer, which is used in many trade qualifications. The St Johns Workplace First Aid which is OSH approved, providing 3 NZOA qualifications. It is the minimum training required for those appointed as first aiders under the Health and Safety in Employment Act. It deals with knowledge everyone should have.

Many adults are taking the second chance to gain Certificate qualifications in order to help them advance in their careers. School Certificate classes are offered in Maori Language, English and Mathematics.

The four-week Defensive Driving course, at the start of each term, has proved popular particularly with senior students. It improves your driving skills and meets the Ministry of Transport's requirements for a 50% reduction on a "Restricted" Licence.

A number of new Account courses were introduced this y "Good Record Keeping Course Small Businesses" was offered the first time in the first term students acclaimed it as an excell course. Many of these students w on to learn the MYOB comps program in terms 3 and or Computer accounting us Spreadsheets.

Each term a different type of cook was offered. Students learned to prepare a variety of dishes Vegetarian, Indian, Middle East, and Asian cooking classes. Stude usually prepared two different disl each night depending on the recip Other fun classes offered includ Badminton, Yoga, Relaxation, Weil Management, Dressmaking, Woc work, Wood Turning, Landsca Design and Cake Decorating.

Community Education programs also sponsors a number of p grammes at the Nathan Homestez South Auckland Literacy Schen Friendship House and the Wo( Turner's Guild.

Arts ART DEPARTMENT ART STUDENTS HAVE SUCCESS IN NATIONAL AND LOCAL COMPETITIONS

This year the Art Department expanded its facilities building a new darkroom complex and computer room. The darkroom now accommodates 25 students, each able to work with an individual enlarger.

This is a major advance on our cramped conditions in B block. With a nearly full complement of up to date enlargers we are well on track towards a fully equipped darkroom set up. A very big thanks to Mr Thomson for believing in the project and to Mrs Danks for her major effort in overseeing the work.

Jane Chen and Melanie Carmont, also year 13, gained merit awards of $150 each .Congratulations girls. In September our students entered work into the Ilford Shield Secondary Schools Photographic Contest. Two students, Jane Chen and Craig Feng, gained Honours awards for their images and 15 other works were given acceptance to the exhibition. Our school was placed 8th in New Zealand.

Our senior students in Photography entered images in the KODAK POLYMAX GOLD AWARDS for secondary school black and white photographic images. Diana Valkenborg, year 13, won the first

Rachael Seaton, year 13, gained 2nd place in the "Painting Your Jeans" Competition run by "RED" of Manukau City and sponsored by Levi Jeans.

The Art Exhibition Each year the number of works that are sold increases and more people attend what has now become a regular annual event for the school.

This year's exhibition was a great success with seventy works being sold, the profits of which went to those students who were successful in selling their work. Some students sold a number of works, especially in Photography and in Painting.

The Exhibition was opened by the Art Department's mentor, well known New Zealand Artist Richard McWhannel. Richard also gave a lecture to the senior students, before the Exhibition, on his work which spans approximately twenty five years. The music department supplied the background ambience with a musical quartet who played for the duration of the exhibition, and the Food Technology Department assisted with the preparation of the nibbles Eor the crowd.

We were fortunate to have two students from Mrs Sneddon's year 10 class , selected Eor the finalists in the competition. The 20 finalists' entries will be exhibited at the New Gallery on the corner of Wellesley and Lorne Streets, from November 27 to December 13, 1998. From these finalists the Judges will select one winning design which will receive an award of $ 2,500 and be published on the cover of our 1999 telephone directories.

CHOIR '98 The Manurewa High School Choir has had a - great year. It started with their performance in the Auckland Town Hall for the Secondary Schools' Choral Festival. They did extremely well, for a choir with many new members, gaining an excellent report.

Coming into the third term, auditions began for a new choir 'NOVA VOCE'. Students were chosen and the work began, with two rehearsals a week, to which all had to be strongly committed. This new choir sang at the opening of the band room, also in term three, after only a few weeks rehearsal, yet everyone loved them!

Soon after, two new choirs were formed - the girls' choir and the boys' choir. These choirs also rehearse weekly and are a great hit.

1998 - THE YEAR OF THE CONCERT BAND After gaining in confidence and ensemble playing, as a result of the 1997 trip to Samoa, 1998 saw the "Coming of Age" of the Concert Band.

To mark this occasion an original piece of work was commissioned by one of New Zealand's leading composers, John Psathas. Entitled "Manurewa Fanfare", this piece was both challenging and rewarding to perform. It was very well received by the judges also, at the North Island Concert Band Festival — which our Band participated in for the very first time.

With twice weekly "before school' rehearsals firmly established, work began at the very beginning of the year which resulted in outstanding success.

As the year draws to a close, the Band is busy fundraising and preparing repertoire for their 1999 tour to North America.

Great commitment has been shown by every member and they can be justifiably proud of their achievements.

In July they took part in the Annual Auckland Secondary Schools Band & Orchestra Festival, receiving a GOLD AWARD for their performance. On the gala evening, before a capacity audience in the Auckland Town Hall, they performed exceptionally well and were consequently awarded "The Most Outstanding Award" in the Concert Band Category.

DRAMA 1998 Some dramatic changes have taken place in the world of the stage this year.

The loss of Mr Alderton to the grip of literature and production as Head of the English Department is a tragedy. Girl power prevails with Miss Thomas taking the lead and the arrival of Miss McNoe to share her dramatic expertise.

Year 12 Drama has had a challenging, enjoyable year with visits to the theatre "Legacy" at Aotea Centre and "Altered Ego" at Onehunga High School. Many students were also involved in their own theatre experiences with lead roles in the school musical and in outside productions. It is encouraging to see the students furthering their interest in the drama field, with Bonnie Burrill developing her lighting skills at Unitec and having the opportunity to work with the tertiary students on their performance. A group of Year 12 students also gave of their time and movement skills in their performance of YMCA with The Manurewa School Concert Band in the Band Competitions at the town hall.

Half A Sixpence - Musical 1998 "Half a Sixpence is better than`? ......... nothing!"

Another successful musical has captivated the audiences at The Manurewa High this year, a reflection of the hours of work put in by both students and staff.

This story of values, love and money set in England provided entertainment for all with its catchy tunes and sophisticated dance moves!

1998 saw huge interest at the auditions, and the cast contained many new faces. Our Year 9 star Tane Davis (Kipps) teamed up with Barbara Ngawati (Anne) to form a dynamic duo, supported by strong performances from Belinda Simes, Alex Carter, and Emma Brown (the Walsingham family), Lou Reddy, Matt Hornby, Jamie Halse (shop boys), Kelly Dixon, Kimberly Lassey, Delina Smith and Jennifer Baylis (shop girls). Humour was not lacking either thanks to Asher Finlayson (Chitterlow) and Ben Davies (Shalford).

and it was encouraging to see that many of these students have further years at school to develop their musical and acting careers.

Almost all of the orchestra was comprised of The Manurewa High School students, under the expertise and guidance of pianist Jane Chen.

Their contribution and dedication to the show is an integral part of its success.

The show can not go on without the support of many. From set design and painting, costumes, make-up, lighting and sound, backstage crew, props, front of house, to the ticket sales and programmes. The efforts of these people contributed to a highly enjoyable and professional performance. The stress is worth it!

Finally, to the cast, congratulations on making it to the spotlight. Most importantly, you survived months and months of Mr Weeks and Miss Thomas!

Class performances included a pantomime performed to Manurewa Central Primary, and a scripted dramatisation of "Stuff Images" a play by Denise Walsh dealing with teenagers and how they see themselves. A visit by make-up specialists was a highlight for 12 Drama, and even the school nurse was fooled by the realism of the blood and scars created on the students.

Junior drama classes have worked hard to develop their confidence and performance ability with the Year 10 students preparing to display their skills in the End of Year Drama Festival. The enthusiasm and energy of the Year 9 classes continue to provide comedy,, (and tragedy for the teachers).

A fine vintage was 1998 drama. A blend of old spice and new spice, that can only get better with age!

Human Resources HUMAN RESOURCES 1998 It has been a busy and exciting year for the staff working in Human Resources. A large number of students at all levels have taken advantage of the assistance provided by the Careers Staff for Career Guidance in the employment, continuing education and training areas.

YEAR 12/13

PTA

To assist senior students with Career Planning, advice and career guidance, students have participated in personal interviews with the Careers Coordinator. Most students have successfully completed the Unit Standard, Produce a CV and/or Produce a Career Plan through module classes. A Leavers Seminar was arranged for Year 12 at the end of the year, and was supported by past pupils who held a forum, career guidance and decision making activities.

Mrs 1 urner, Careers Coordinato addressed our school Paren Teachers Association on "Parents a First Careers Advisers". This rne with much interest and enthusiasm.

SPEAKERS '1 his year, the Careers area has hosted visiting liaison officers, and representatives from a wide range of services for the purposes of providing up-to-date information on courses and entry criteria.

Representatives have come from the Army, Navy, Airforce, Police, Otago/Massey/Auckland University Liaison Officers, MIT, AIT and UNITEC Liaison Officers, as well as people from the following fields Accountancy, Marketing, Office Systems, Animation, Business Studies, Teaching, Hairdressing, Make-up Artistry, Hotel Management, Engineering and Design. I am sure interested students have benefited greatly from their advice.

MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS Years 11 and 12 received the opportunity to listen to two motivational speakers this year.

These were:

LIFE SKILLS Years 11 and 12 attended work experience during Terms 2 and 3.

Our students participated in employment areas involving office administration, stores, child care, supermarkets, screen printing, photography, automotive, recreation, horticulture and the auto industry.

This was most beneficial to those involved.

This year saw Years 11 and 12 attend the Youth Skills Expo, held at Manukau Polytech. All trades were represented, providing demonstrations/competitions in the trade related areas.

YEAR 10 TERTIARY TASTERS Year 10 participated in a Careers Week, where career planning has been introduced. All 430 students visited a tertiary provider to explore life and courses at a tertiary level.

Visits were made to The Auckland University, UNITEC, Manukau Institute of Technology, Auckland Institute of Technology and several Training Opportunities Providers.

This provides an introduction to Career Planning.

FAREWELL.... MRS COLES The Human Resources Department sadly farewells a dedicated and valued staff member, who has been associated with the department for most of the 20 years she has been in the school.

Mrs Maureen Coles joined the staff in 1978 as a part-time Home Economics Teacher. Her husband Dennis Coles was HOD Science at the time. After completing Guidance Training, Mrs Coles became a part-time Guidance Teacher before taking on a full-time commitment as Guidance Counsellor in 1983. During this time, Mrs Coles has seen the needs of students change, requiring a greater emphasis on pastoral care and personal well-being. Mrs Coles has found it very satisfying to assist students in handling their problems, and has specifically assisted them with personal growth, motivation, coping strategies, and refocussing in order to achieve personal and career goals.

Always appreciated has been the continued support received from parents, the community and local contributing schools through the 15 years of contact established by Mrs Coles in the role as Guidance Counsellor. She is well respected and held in high regard by those who have had contact with her.

CHALLENGE FOR SUCCESS PROGRAMME A number of students were selected to participate in these courses this year. Emphasis has been placed on exploring attitudes towards parents, school and peers, developing support systems, anger management, developing communication skills, self esteem and confidence building, culture and identity and personal safety.

Mrs Coles has been involved in the fuller life of the school with past commitments in the school choir, drama productions and Christian Fellowship.

Mrs Coles has also been involved in taking Career Programmes, SelfManagement, Orientation, Peer Support and Study Skills Programmes.

More recently, she has coordinated the Challenge for Change and Challenge for Success Programmes.

We thank Mrs Coles for her contribution to Guidance work and wish her all the very best in her retirement. Mrs Coles looks forward to devoting more time to her six grandchildren and personal commitments with the Auckland Choral Society and other hobbies and interests.

Staff member from September 1973 to April 1998 The end of Term One was crowded with activities, making it difficult to say "Goodbye" to students of recent years. I remedy that now with congratulations to all on achievements and best wishes for forthcoming qualifications.

On arriving at the school for a 'short term' in 1973, I taught mainly French at first, merging into

English Formal Speech Competitions In Term III every student in an English class from Year 9 to Year 12 was required to prepare and give a formal speech to their peers.

The best from each class were selected to deliver their speeches in competition with others at their form level.

The standard of oracy skills was good. The passion with which the speakers spoke on topics they felt strongly about was pleasing.

My past experience through all levels of education from New Entrants to association with Teachers' Colleges and Professional subject groups reinforced the strong cooperation that exists among Administration and Staff of The Manurewa High School.

There have been many rewarding extensions of curriculum duties.

The Cultural Council from about 1978 has seen senior students gain Service Certificates in various public relations tasks. The series of One Act Play festivals was a highlight involving Drama production.

Particularly satisfying are the high standards reached in public speaking, debating and reading attainments.

It is very gratifying to meet and hear news of past pupils who have furthered their education, movint into careers and family life.

Beyond the classroom there were years on the Executive Committee of the Parent Teacher Association and as Staff Representative on the Board of Trustees.

At my farewell functions in April I paid tribute to the many groups and individuals who have been so supportive over the years. To anyone omitted, I now record sincere appreciation of nearly 25 fulfilling years of challenge and friendship.

Greetings to all for a joyful Christmas/New Year season with a safe holiday looking forward to 1999.

Farewell - Mrs Price After twenty-three years, our school librarian, Mrs Price, has decided to retire.

She plans to spend more time with her husband, beginning with a two month eagerly anticipated tour of Ireland, England and Italy.

Prior to joining the staff at The Manurewa High School, Mrs Price was a librarian for ten years in the Auckland Public Library. During her time in our school library, Mrs Price saw many changes take place, in particular the development of the computer section which moved the library into the technological age. Sadly, though, Mrs Price has also seen student interest in books suffer with competition from television and computers.

We wish Mrs Price a happy retirement.

We know she will enjoy the opportunity to pursue her favourite interests; reading, gardening, debating and going for walks.

Library Report It has been a busy year in the library for both students and staff alike. We have had many changes including the computers and the colour photocopier being installed. The computers have provided vast amounts of information via the Internet, and CD ROM programmes such as Cinemania and Encarta. Other applications are also used.

Miss Box, Mrs Miers and Mrs Nicholson have done so much this year for us students.

Mrs Nicholson and Mrs Miers have been recently appointed to the library.

Information Not only have they issued books technology in but have helped the library students with finding information for projects, using the copier and computers.

Mr Finlay and Mrs Shaw have also provided assistance for students and the librarians. Overall the staff have been great to work with in the library this year.

The new colour copier has provided quality copying in either black and white or colour. It also has the ability to print images and text onto transparent overhead projection sheets. This has been very useful for many students with their projects.

This year we had to farewell Mrs Price who had worked in the school library for 23 years. Mrs Price has always been helpful and friendly to students and staff. Now Mrs Price is enjoying her trip around the world as part of her retirement.

I wish everyone the best of luck in the future and I hope 1999 will be a great year for all.

New Zealand author Duncan Stuart visited the library this year. He wrote the book based on the critically acclaimed New Zealand film The Whole of the Moon'.

He proved an entertaining and informative speaker about writing stories. Also he gave students some words of inspiration for those who are interested in writing their own stories.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY The Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) is a three-day event held in June, which gives senior secondary students the chance to represent a country as if they were at the UN headquarters in New York.

Each team consists of two delegates and a councillor, who debate the resolutions, have a chance to make amendments, and lobby like mad.

Our school entered two teams this year - one was the USA and the other, Algeria.

As members of the USA team, we got to experience the workings of the Security Council, the power we have, and the prejudice other countries feel towards us (some countries tried to kick us out because of what we wore). It was an exciting time where we made new friends and met people with similar interest to us.

If you're into kidnapping, declaring war, being devious and underhandec, and want to find out what being a diplomat is all about, give MUNA a go.

The librarian team of 18 students of Years 10-13 have done an excellent job this year. They have given their free time to do their usual set duties.

Their contribution has been more than outstanding.

Reading Room/s 1998 1998 started off with a few expected challenges: to fit hundreds of books, journals, P.A.T. tests, reference books, etc etc into enough boxes to prevent them spilling over and getting mixed in with the store of Maths books, Social Studies maps, fans and the general rubbish that accumulates in "storerooms".

The reading programme meant the trudging up and down those stairs several times a day, carrying a box full of short novels to classes with

hopefully, eagerly awaiting students whom with silent pledges vow to read, read, read so that on the next return, they were ready to exchange for yet another escapade into the world of words.

Students who came to read in this wonderbox were miraculously able to still find space on a chair, a footstool, an upturned bin and then the mat! Then the final move eventuated: `R3 Reading Room' The space! The light! The shelves! The 17

decor! Books, Books, Books...! The delight of classes, especially the Year 9's , who view it as a treat to have a Reading Room, use it even at intervals. Those who have read often found that the 'world of words' offers adventure, excitement, fear of the unexpected, contentment and peace plus the challenge of achieving Reading Certificates!.

The multicultural nature of the school has been enhanced by some -95 students of Indian descent.

These students are either New Zealand born Indians or immigrants from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Africa, Fiji and Malaysia.

Then a fortnight later, on the Friday evening, another group, combining with the Indian group, bowled their way through 2 enjoyable hours at Manukau's Superstrike.

The highlight of 1998 was as usual, the trip to Paradise Ice Skating Rink, where with members of the Indian Club, 56 students, and 3 teachers spent an exciting and for many, a damp 2 hours trying out their various skills on the ice. There were more beginners on the ice this year than last, but most were able to make it round the rink by the final minutes of the session.

Although the Club is now 5 years old, the enthusiasm of the members is still as great as it was in the first 2 years. Membership is now some 70, and nearly all participated in at least one club activity.

French Dinner The French chefs at the Bohemian CafĂŠ in Ponsonby Road gave a very boisterous band of year 10, 11 and 13 students a night to remember. Apart from the culinary delights of garlic bread, onion soup, boeuf bourguignon, and a highly alcoholic cajun rum gateau, the particular talents of one of the younger Frenchmen turned the heads and loosened the tongues of not a few of the female francophiles.

Planning is underway for next year's restaurant trip which will see our intrepid tour party tasting the tropical temptations of New Caledonia. The price will perhaps be a tad higher but it does come with your own francophone island paradise.

ADVANCED DEBATING For Hayley and 1, this was our last year with advanced debating. For three years we have agonised over each debate and spent hours preparing for them, but finally we're graduating and passing on the responsibility of first and third speaker.

This year we had only one team entered in the Auckland competition. This was one of our most successful years with our team narrowly missing out on a quarter -final place. Our moots were always challenging and exciting to argue. A personal favourite for our team was 'that we are all feminists now.'

A big thanks must go to Mrs Chan for all her hard work and time over the years. Without her it would have been impossible task and we want her to know how appreciated she was. To next year's debaters, all the best and I hope you find it as exciting as we did.

JUNIOR DEBATING Although not entirely successful, the junior debaters of 1998 had a great time.

For many of the debates we were out of our school and into another, once travelling as far as Mahurangi. This year's topics were challenging, ranging from 'Kiwi music is bizarre' to 'New Zealand Men are a sorry lot' We were coached by (and a big thanks to) Mrs Chan, Kylie, Mark, Juliette and Peter, who are all advanced debaters. The team comprised year 9 and 10 students who will hopefully continue on with debating. New members are welcome.

INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT As usual at Manurewa High Scho in 1998, there have been man varied opportunities for studen and teachers to be involved i exchanges with Japanese people.

As we have a sister school, Takasa Higashi Senior High School, Gunrna Prefecture, Japan, our grou of students and teachers went t Japan for three weeks in April, the students and teachers from Takasa Senior High School visited o school for two weeks in August.

We participate also in the Manuka City sister city programme wi Utsunomiya in Saitama Prefectur in Japan, hosting students an student groups.

As far as possible, reciprocal hosti is encouraged in order to develo strong friendship bonds betwee the two countries. Indeed, some o our students are still writing an telephoning friends they first me five years ago!

JAPAN TOUR When you go on holiday, you rarely expect to get up at 6.00 am (even me - 4.30 am), sit through an earthquake; not go to bed until after midnight well perhaps not; walk or run, (depending on the urgency), for up to 10 hours per day, and then be fined if you are late. Yet, this was just a fact of life for the six students and two teachers who participated in this year's exchange with our Japanese Sister School - Takasaki Higashi High School for three weeks in Tour to Japan - Sister School Takasaki Higashi Senior High School in April.

All of our Japanese cultural work throughout the years could never have prepared us for the joy of sharing in such an ancient culture.

We participated in everything from ikebana (abstract flower arranging) to karaoke.

There were many experiences, and famous places crammed into our week-long tour. These included making our own paper, watching

drunken men climb poles at the Furukawa Festival, and visiting the Golden Temple, Hineji Castle and the Hiroshima Peace Park. There was much sadness surrounding the Peace Park and those who entered the museum found more than enough reason to ring the World Peace Belt We also met up with the four girls from the 1997 Utsunomiya City exchange. This became a consolidation of a wonderful friendship, emphasising the theory behind international exchanges- making new friends and experiencing different cultures. And there are eight people who will validate the claim that this was one of life's most uniquely wonderful experiences.

Earlier this year I realized a longheld dream and visited Japan with some knowledge of the customs but with virtually no language skills.

However I had no qualms for my well-being which was safely in the hands of sensei. Daph Pinkney, who has for many years transported students and teachers alike through moving and magical experiences in The Land Of the Rising Sun. In our party were six students of Japanese, intelligent, highly motivated teenagers with enquiring minds, who proved to have a great empathy for the people and customs of a very 'alien' country. I was grateful to these fine young people for the help they generously gave me and was proud at all times, to be associated with them. My thanks to al members of the group

Mathematic Australian Mathematics Competition

Mathex We competed in the Mathematical Investigations, in t Statistical Investigations and in the Quiz evening, all Year 9 and Year 10 levels. Our quiz teams acquit) themselves well to finish in the middle of a sa competitive field.

1998 has been our most successful year to date in this competition with a record number of entries[251 students sat the examination] and three High Distinction Passes, [the first for our school].

Graeme Fielder was placed second in the Year 9 section with his project on ways of reducing bacteria in kitchen cloths. He found that washing them and drying them after use was a good method. Even some newly purchased cloths contain bacteria.

As usual our four teams , [two each from Year 9 and Year 10] enjoyed participating in this competition which is a cross between solving mathematical problems and a relay race. The highlight was the victory of one of our Year 9 teams in their section of the competition.

Physical & Personal Development DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD This year has been a full and busy year for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award participants.

As part of the expedition section we had a two day tramp in Piha that was an experience not to be forgotten. There were some first time trampers who did really well and are to be commended for their enthusiasm and adaptability to the situations and challenges they were faced with. They learnt heaps - mostly about the things they would do and take (or not take!)

WATERPOLO This year Manurewa High for the first time in just over a decade entered a team in the Auckland Waterpolo competition. The team was a mixed team entered in a league consisting of predominantly male teams.

No member of the team had ever played before. There are no facilities in the local area for practice but the team quickly learned by experience and became a cohesive unit in no time. The team played competitively while having great fun at the same time. The players showed great dedication and commitment due to

the fact that games were played in Henderson on Friday and Sunday nights.

The team finished 6th in the competition and were unlucky to miss out on a semi final spot.

Outstanding performers were: Colin Hopkins, Tim Funaki, Anna Diack, Brooke Hainsworth and Alistair Benson.

BADMINTON 1998 Counties region. Although the team did not win, the girls tean and went on to the next round in Hamilton for the Waikato Thames Valley region. They a won this which put them intc finals held in Wellington from 18th - 20th of September. Or only eight schools who qualifie New Zealand, the girls did very against intense competition pla seventh overall.

Seven badminton teams were entered this year into the Counties Manukau secondary schools competition. All games were held at the Papakura badminton hall between May and October. Our school was one of six schools entered into the competition. All of our teams did exceptionally well this year, winning three out of four divisions.

The A grade boys team captained

by Vuong Tran, won their division as did the A grade girls Green team captained by Sarah Aikin, with the A grade girls Yellow team placing a close second. In the B grade division, two girls teams and two boys teams were entered. The B grade girls

Green team captained by Khatijah Safih, won their division with the B grade girls Yellow team as runners up. The boys B grade teams have been a mixed bunch with a lot of new players having a go. Although not winning their division, they did very well with the B grade Green team placing in the top three.

On the 27th of July, Helen Marx and Cara-lee Moore won the individual junior doubles inter-school championship for the Counties and Auckland region. Later in the year our school entered into the New Zealand Secondary Schools competition with our top boys and girls team in the first round for the

Junior Boys Soccer The first game of the 1998 season was off to a very ominous start as we fell behind to an early goal, playing away at Pukekohe. The other team seemed to be well organised and we were looking decidedly short of match practice. As the game developed our superior fitness and self- belief became more and more evident and we eventually ran out winners by three goals to one. That first goal we conceded was a very timely wake up call, it was also to be the last goal that we let in until the final game of the year!

The team gained and lost a few players over the season but happily the new arrivals added more strength and certainty to the team, especially in defence with the arrival of the outstanding Mark Gower. The mid-held was a constant threat to the opposition and at times their commitment was such that the opposition was overwhelmed by half time. The front three positions were keenly contested all season long, with Kelvin Ouk supplying the team with a staggering 20 goals in only 7 games. Highlights of the season included a 13-0 demolition of Wesley college and the 3-0 home win over a very classy Waiuku team

Many thanks to the calming effects on the team that the industrious captain Leon Ouk provided, he always displayed a commitment and love for the game that was an example to the others. A special mention needs to be made also of Vuthy Moeum whose energy and ferocious tackling often took my breath away, ( and several of the opposition players too.)

The season ended with a 2-2 draw away to the excellent Waiuku side, who equalised with the last kick of the match, and although the players were a little annoyed at not winning every match, I am sure that they were all very proud of our school and their own contributions to this outstanding team effort. The final tally of goals for the season was 40 for and 3 against !!

SOCCER, Boys First XI This year saw the introduction of a new coach, Mr Roberts, and the emerging talent of young new players. The team's inexperience and young age showed in the results, but in no way reflected the lack of talent and commitment from the players and coach.

The team showed potential in playing skillful and constructive football even though practices proved difficult to organise due to other commitments of players.

The opportunity was provided for

some of the emerging junior players to have exposure to First XI level school soccer, and should provide a solid base for future success next year and the years to come.

Artistic Gymnastics

Once again the volleyball season had started and training began on the second day of the first term.

With eight eager girls, who have been playing together since third form, all that was needed to win the Auckland Championships was a little hard work and new moves to improve our game strategies. We had entered the tournament with confidence, and along with sheer determination and enthusiasm, we managed to become the undefeated and unbeatable 1998 Auckland Champions after breezing past rivals Auckland Girls and Avondale.

Entered as second-seeds in the National Championships held in Tauranga, pressure was on to compete successfully at the tournament. We managed to make it into the play-offs behind rivals Kawerau but lost to Hillmarton and so we just missed out. Although we were placed eighth overall from 16 teams, our efforts and attitudes towards the sport were recognised by winning the Fairplay Award.

We were not saddened by the outcome of the tournament as it wasn't the competitiveness but the excitement and enjoyment felt by all players which was the measure of our success.

For most of the team, this was to be their last year playing together.

We would like to thank Mr O'Dea for believing in us, encouraging us and also most importantly teaching us skills we thought we never had over the past few years. The inspiring leadership of Leilesha Davis provided a great role model and she was the best motivator for the rest of the girls.

Sadly missed will be the special bond between the girls, the warm friendships with other schools and not forgetting â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the socials after every tournament. All this and more will be a memorable experience that we will treasure forever. Thankyou to all who contributed in any way to this successful team.

Girls Hockey The enthusiastic 1st XI Girls Hockey Team trooped off to Pukekohe for the first game of the season in very high spirits. The opposition was a tough team and although we lost, our spirits remained high. This pattern continued throughout the season and surprisingly the weekly pep-talks must have registered with a bleary-eyed, puffing, tired group.

Every Wednesday at 7am, as the rest of the school considered getting out of bed, the 1st and 2nd XI Hockey teams were hitting, pushing, trapping and passing in the school gym. The victory rate didn't improve much throughout the season due to sick or injured players and tough opposition. But throughout this, Miss Cox (team 26

The 2nd XI were also an enthusi group of individuals who perfo well but due to lack of expen did not succeed in their competi table. Credit should be given w it is due, hence with more practic working as a team, the 2nd XI improve and by this time next there will be glowing reports of successe s.

Touch Rugby The year started off with our Counties Championship held at Papakura High School and it lasted for six Tuesdays. With only four teams from three schools entered, the results turned out with us on top, with our only competition coming from the host school.

Overall, it was a great season. I'd like to thank our coaches, Wade Brunstan and Stacie Waru, Mr and Mrs Jack, for all their help and support, our manager Mr O'Dea and to all the girls who did themselves and their school proud.

From there we went on to the Auckland regionals, held at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga. We didn't play very well in our first game and even though we won, our coach Wade wasn't a happy chappie, so, after a rigorous warm up and heavy rev up, our next game against Auckland Girls was played really well with the girls finally jelling as a team and ending up with a draw. We met our Counties counterparts, Papakura, in the semifinals and with a few injuries and a lot of tired girls, we played hard. At the final whistle, we got a bit of a scare when Papakura scored to tie it up and take us to a drop off, which fortunately, we won with an awesome run away try scored in the corner by our little wonder Kimmy Jack, to secure us a place at the Nationals.

Then to the finals we trooped off with more injuries and even more tired girls along with coaches and support crew. It had been a long, hard day and we unfortunately came second to Auckland Girls. We were to meet them again!

Our final and biggest hurdle for the season was the National Secondary Schools Touch Tournament, a two day event held in Ngarawahia. And being the last year's National Champs, we had a reputation to uphold. The weekend consisted of early morning wake ups, heading off to the fields and warming up in the mist, and beautiful food supplied by Mr O'Dea and prepared by the lovely Mrs Jack, Moana and Stacie. The days were long and hard and again we took the long road to the finals because of a draw against Kaitaia, but for the second time this year we met our arch rivals Auckland Girls in the final and yet again with a team riddled with injuries. 1998 saw the formation of a brand new squad which participated in the Auckland Secondary Schools Girls Rugby Competition. The team was comprised mainly of novice players, most of whom having some background in Touch Rugby. Adding the dimension of contact into the game tended to bring out a fresh perspective to the quiet students who lurk in the back corners of the classroom...

The season started with a thrilling match up against Otahuhu which saw Manurewa only just losing a game where we outplayed the opposition, losing only to a minor technicality which we weren't aware of until too late. The following week saw Manurewa locking horns with Papatoetoe, who had been together for much longer than us and found gaps in our defence early on. The match was cancelled after an accident involving two of our players â&#x20AC;˘ who tackled each other with their heads, ending up in Middlemore overnight and receiving numerous stitches. There was also a broken arm, and a few mild concussions. These small inflictions saw Manurewa forced to cancel against Southern Cross

while Sana, Kelly and Evelyn had wonderful excuses to avoid exams.

The next game was against Hillary in absolutely abominable weather, whereby there wasn't a single break in the rain for the whole game. This saw some wonderful ball control and some very tired and muddy players. Manurewa led for most of the game, only to let past a late, and controversial, try in the closing seconds of the game, which ended in a draw. Back home the following week and this time against Mangere, who were the championship leaders at the time, and MHS put in a convincing performance, losing in the end, but in the game all the way, constantly working as a team, constantly refining their skills. The game was essential build up for the following week when we travelled to Howick College and scored an outright victory of 35 nil.

We had to wait until after the holidays to play our final match against none other than James Cook High School our traditional local rivals. In true Manurewa fashion the team rose to the occasion and destroyed the opposition resoundingly ending the season on an extremely positive and sweet note.

Finally, each year Manurewa High School challenges James Cook High School for the ASB CUP. CONGRATULATIONS must go to those 20 boys who were specially chosen for this game and were successful in winning back the cup after its absence for two years. 1998 Rugby In 1998 The Manurewa High School entered four teams in the Counties Manukau Secondary Schools Rugby competition.This was two more than last year which is an encouraging sign that rugby at the school is starting to gain strength and popularity once again.

The season began with a group of 1st XV and U17 boys taking part in the annual Coca Cola 1st XV rugby tournament, held at Massey Park in Papakura. This provided the boys with some good pre-season match experience and also allowed them to play teams such as Otahuhu College, and Church College from Hamilton. Sunia Pasi, Henry Fa'afili, and Pele Suluvave were the outstanding players for Manurewa at this tournament.

The following teams, their captains, coaches, and record of performances are: 1st XV Captain - Nicholas Connal Vice Captain - Jarrod Black Coaches for the various parts of the seasons were Mr U Levi and Mr R Tagelagi Manager - Mr K. Patten Results - wins = 0 draws = 0 losses = 9 Although the 1st XV completed the season without recording a win, the team represented the school with pride and determination. As the results show, all their games were close and very keenly contested.

The team showed great spirit and continued to improve throughout the season.

The U17 team began the season without a coach and its first few games against Papakura, Waiuku, and Ardmore were less than memorable. However, the potential for success was always there and this was recognised by Mr Alan Pearce, who decided to take charge and coach these boys.Once he had laid down the law there was no turning back as this team went from strength to strength, and became a force to be reckoned with. Thanks must go to Mr A Pearse and Mr R Pearse for their help and dedication to this team. Also, congratulations must go to Richard Tulia, Jason Ihimaera, Tekori Luteru, and Arapeta Harris for being selected in the Counties Manukau Secondary Schools U16 Representative Rugby Team.

Science Youth ANZAAS Late in September this year I was fortunate to be chosen to attend the Youth ANZAAS which was being held in Hobart Tasmania.

Because it is the International Year of the Ocean the main focus was on marine issues but other issues such as world climate and endangered Tasmanian species were also discussed.

Attending the conference were approximately 45 students from various states in Australia and 3 from New Zealand, including myself.

Our main activities included mostly lectures in the mornings, some of which were very interesting. These were given at the Hobart campus of the University of Tasmania. The afternoons consisted of tours of laboratories such as CSIRO marine biology Labs and the fisheries and aquaculture centre and also the Tasmanian Antarctic Division.

I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to work beside and meet students from Australia and make new friends.

Overall the trip was a great experience and I am very grateful for being given the opportunity to go.

Air Monitoring

Have you ever heard of Montana or Big Sky country? If you are like most people in the beautiful country of New Zealand then you probably have not.

My name is Christa Harvey and I have recently arrived in New Zealand from Montana, in the northwest United States, as a student teacher in science. I am in my last term at Montana State University-Billings and will be returning to the United States in August to begin my teaching career.

I have enjoyed my time at Manurewa High School immensely and have taught Year 9, 11, 12, and 13 students in science, biology, and chemistry. I have been impressed with the students' inquisitive nature and their willingness to ask questions of their instructors. Keep on asking those great questions!!

Blood Bank A significant feature of the blood collected here, at The Manurewa High School, is the participation by the staff, and on this occasion approximately 27 staff members donated. This 'leadership by example' obviously has a favourable influence on the number of students who donate.

There is always a great need for blood, for many varied reasons, so with this in mind, a special 'thankyou! to those, (both students and staff alike),who donated on the day.

There was an excellent response to the collection by the Auckland Regional Blood Services held on the 1st May 1998.

A total of 155 donors attended and 114 units of blood were collected, including those of 60 new donors!

The Manurewa High School students have undertaken water pollution monitoring of local waterways for a number of years.

Monitoring of the air has been considered but not investigated because of lack of equipment.

A grant of $2500 from ACI Environmental Fund will enable us to purchase an air pump and filter to sample volumes of air which we can then analyse. Manukau City Council have loaned to us their deposit gauge stands and Air Resource Management and ESR have given advice on how best to carry out this monitoring. It is planned to put the data, which will be collected on a monthly baisis, on our web site.

ASTA Science Quiz Gareth Cummins, Dominea Jun, Karl Baylis and Daniel Bailey competed against 7 other schools from the South Auckland zone in the ASIA Science Quiz held at Kings College, 22nd October 1998.

The competition was fierce with both teachers and students becoming very involved. The Manurewa team took a somewhat relaxed yet committed approach which paid off leading them to a half a point victory over Kings College and Papatoetoe High School.

Electrotechnology Manukau Institute of Technology provided the opportunity for woman students to participate in the field of electrotechnology when they offered students the opportunity to undertake study in this area at the tech.

A group of students enjoyed the opportunity to make electronic gadgets and returned to school with alarms and beepers to antagonise those who were born the wrong sex!

Crest CREST represents Creativity in Science and Technology. All science students are encouraged as part of their science at Manurewa High School to undertake and work towards a CREST award.

The mentors for this worthwhile award are members of the local community who visit the school to talk to students about their projects.

It is through Crest that the students are able to extend their learning through linking to expertise within the community.

The awards give students at all levels a chance to have their hard work developing practical investigations for science projects recognised. Depending on their level of involvement students can choose which certificate to work towards; bronze, silver or gold.

More and more students are getting involved in CREST each year at Manurewa High.

1998 achievements were: • Bronze: 35 • Silver: 40 Project topics ranged from testing iodine levels in Japanese and New Zealand seaweeds to finding out the easiest way to lift a punching bag!

The variety of ideas and design of testing procedures was impressive to say the least. It is amazing what people can come up with when they are encouraged to be creative.

Report of Crest Invent Event: On Friday the 18th September I flew down to Palmerston North for the 1998 Crest Invent Event. My project "Lead, Leads to Carpark Design" had earned me the honour of representing our school at this event.

I arrived in the "City of Knowledge" at 8:00am and was greeted by my guide who was a member of the Massety University staff. We (Bruce Galloway from Nayland High School in Nelson and myself) were

bought some breakfast at the Massey University Campus Breakfast Café. After which we were shown the Campus and given some pamphlets.

It was 10:30am when we were driven to the Manawatu Science and Technology Museum. We were given all day access to the exhibits and interactive activities, such as the thermograph imaging display, and the hot air balloon. We then had a look at some of the interesting exhibits which showed the life of the early pioneers of Manawatu, how they lived, as well as the early Maori tools and taonga that had been donated by citizens who wanted them held for safe keeping.

It was then time to set up our displays in the foyer. The displays consisted of a board, with photo, and a brief rundown of the basic ideas of the projects. Some of the other Crest achievers had bought their actual projects to show such As the two girls who had designed --and made a working hockey table (even Mr Creech had a go).

All of the project owners had to explain what their projects were about, and questions were asked. A lot of important people asked about, and congratulated me on my project (including Mr Wyatt Creech).

The afternoon involved listening to speeches by CREST sponsors and the founder of CREST presented the Gold Crest Awards. (I was a bit disappointed because these all went to girls). What followed was, in my mind, the best bit; lots of free food and orange juice.

The day ended with a drive through the Manawatu Gorge and to several places of interest around the Palmerston North area before flying back to Auckland.

Overall the Crest Invent Event was a valuable experience. What I found to be most worthwhile was the interaction between people from different schools from all over New Zealand, and how they got along, and shared their ideas with one another.

Lead, Leads to Carpark Design Robert had some measureme lead levels in dust in carparks in 1994 before lead was reg out of petrol.

Have lead levels changed since?

Testing for lead isn't some done in school laboratories enough accuracy for Robert's w but a friend of his mother agr to act as his consultant and University allowed him to use facilities.

Enviroschool 1998 Enviroschool is a biennial event held at Lincoln University. It is open to year 12 and year 13 students. It costs $330 per student but this includes meals, accommodation, and transport in Christchurch. Many students received Rotary assistance to help cover costs.

On the 14th of April 1998 three Manurewa High School Students arrived at Christchurch Airport on their way to the 1998 Enviroschool.

We were picked up from the airport and taken to Lincoln University by minibus. When we arrived at the campus we were given information packs and shown to our rooms.

After this we had lunch which was a smorgasbord (as were all our meals) and then participated in team building exercises. That evening we had our first lectures.

During the week we had lectures as well as several field trips. The field trips included a day trip up the Rakaia Gorge travelling on to Mt Somers Station where we were filmed for Country Calendar. Here we were given a short lecture about soil structure and the nitrogen content in soils (we were also advised to urinate in our gardens!)

We visited Cathedral Square, the Antarctic Centre - where we got to play in the snow and then on

to one of the following; sewage works, herbarium or radiation centre.

On the last day we had guest speakers from Forest and Bird and Marine Watch. The speaker from Marine Watch, Jim Lilley, was excellent and received a standing ovation for his talk. During his presentation he showed many photos of whale rescues.

We all enjoyed Enviroschool 1998 and no-one wanted to leave at the end of the week. We would all recommend Enviroschool as we all enjoyed our time in Christchurch and gained lots of valuable knowledge.

On Tuesday 30th of June this year the annual BP technology challenge will be held at the down town convention centre in Auckland city.

This event is held at several of the main centres and is a time when about 40 of Auckland's intermediate and secondary schools come together to compete in a competition using their skills in technology to construct various structures like towers and robots costumes using only the equipment provided, for example newspaper and sellotape.

There is also a chance for the audience to participate in a challenge.

The winning students are rewarded with prizes from Nature's window and the event is sponsored by various companies including the main sponsor, BP oil.

Kelly Tarlton's and the Museum Thoroughly enjoyed by all of 9C0 and 9CL was their visit to Kelly Tarlton's and Weird and Wonderful. The snow mobile ride to see the penguin chicks with their "fur coats" was impressive. Captain Cook's bed seemed to provide an added attraction for some who felt a nap was needed (much to the ire of Ms Makin)! but as always the stingrays gliding overhead and the moray eels with their beady eyes drew awes of wonder.

Weird and Wonderful too saw students racing from one exhibit to another investigating, wondering and commenting on the wonders of life's forms. An added attraction this year was the route to Weird and Wonderful which meandered through the World War II exhibits with the bell from Archilles just waiting to be clanged!.

Unitec Pumpkin Competition In December last year I received seeds of the Atlantic Giant pumpkin from Unitec who were running a pumpkin growing competition for high school students.

Those students who were interested in taking part collected some seeds and fertiliser from me and decided to grow them over the holidays. Daniel Doland managed to grow two reasonable sized pumpkins.

One weighed in at 38.8 kg and the other one was 27kg.

We took them to UNITEC one Thursday afternoon for the weigh in with the other schools who had participated. The biggest pumpkin weighed in at 85kg but Daniel did win the artistic award for the shape and colour of his pumpkin , for these efforts he won a Watkins garden pack. It was good to see keen students showing off their efforts.

Light Rail System

Earlier this year all year 12 biology students wrote a report on the environmental issues which need to be addressed if a light rail system is built between Win Station and Manukau to link up with the existing rail system. Our own resources and a speaker from the Manukau City Council were used in compiling this research.

The proposed system has both negative and positive effects towards the environment:

• pollution: less because more people

Negative effects; • noise: made by machinery disturbing surrounding area during construction

• runoff: by products of the construction site polluting surrounding waters

• dust: would rise and settle on the land and buildings nearby

construction would cut off once existing access between communities. Safe and easy access would need to be provided to allow movement across the tracks

• parking: cars of the commuters need a safe area in which to be left while their owners use the train system.

Positive effects; will be using the train instead of private vehicles

• traffic: drop in private vehicle use means a drop in the amount of traffic congestion

• profitability: better because of easier access to the city and to Manukau, therefore an expected rise in consumers meaning more economic success

Goat Island Few places in the country, even in the world, can offer an experience such as 1998's year 13 biology classes trip to Goat Island Marine Reserve in February of this year. The Year 13 biology classes make this journey to the reserve annually in order to study fish behaviour.

Not being quite sure what to expect, we started out with a feeling of trepidation, somewhat anxious about the dubious pleasure of meeting a granddaddy snapper face to face, and really, not that impressed by having to give up an entire Sunday in order to watch a few fish swimming around.

A 6.00am wakeup call was not our idea of a glorious experience. Howeveic being young and adventurous fortified by a highly nutritious breakfast at Macdonald's on the way - we set off into the great unknown.

Because we had left at such an early hour, by the time we made it to the reserve it was only just after 9 am. A little chilly, but stylishly attired in our snug fitting full length wetsuits, we breached the surface of the water and immediately were plunged into a world quite unlike any we had ever seen before. This was a world where dense seaweed and forests of kina formed a home for triple fins and blennies, spotties and those ever present demoiselles, pipers, kahawai, parore and snapper. The snapper threatened to bite our fingers as they swam about in hope of frozen peas and other morsels of Eood. The most impressive of all were the stingrays which were present in unprecedented numbers. These amazing creatures slid out unseen from their concealed sandy beds, to appear before us as we explored their homes.

Health It is pleasing to report that the Science Department has a curriculum which reflects the ideals of the new draft health curriculum.

Twenty teaching staff who attended the First Aid Instructors course are now able to teach first aid within the school modules. This is across the curriculum but organised from within the science faculty. Part of this module involves practice on the Gentle Annie models purchased with a grant from the Health budget.

To help inform students and keep staff up to date, liaison with the local community health advisers enable science teachers to call on specialists in such fields as diabetes, specialist eating disorders

and FADE. to visit classes and speak to students. It is planned to bring the FLEF group within the school to provide education from a Polynesian perspective.

Cardio-vascular fitness is seen as particularly important. The local fitness centre provides equipment and staff time so that all year 10 Science students are able to visit the gym and "try out" on the equipment as part of the Sports Science Unit.

The aerobics sessions prove particularly popular with the most unlikely groups of boys!

As well, the specialist learning units such as Homai, LAD and Auckland Science, experience the activities available at the gym.

Australian Schools Science Competition There were 269 students taking part this year, 88 students received certificates One student Danielle Hedges, in Year 10 received a High Distinction award (top 1 % in NZ), a great achievement.

ICI Presentation to Science Department

On the morning of 6 March 10 LA and 10 WF with their science teachers, Mr Parlane and Mrs Leonard, boarded a bus for the short trip into the Auckland Observatory situated in the One Tree Hill domain. There we were met by resident astronomer, John Dunlop, and quickly divided into groups, before starting on a busy visit. The Stardome, a state of the art artificial night sky, provided an action packed tour of the universe, highlighting interesting objects that would be seen. All this was kept in the student's perspective as it was viewed against the background of the familiar Auckland horizon.

A visit was made to the large Edith Winstone Blackwell telescope, where some students were able to observe the star Proxima Centauri, even in broad daylight!

Mystery Creek 1998

The third phase of the visit involved viewing some interesting large screen video clips of space exploration. The contrast between the "historical" shots of the 1970's American Apollo programme and more recent images from the Shuttle era proved interesting.

Miss Fraser and myself took the horticultural group to Mystery Creek on Friday the 12th of June. It was a very fine sunny day as we mixed with the rural types with their swandries and rubber boots. Lucky for us there was no mud this year.

Each student received a free pass for a return visit at an evening session.

This could well be a stimulating family event, specially with more darkness and clearer skies when winter approaches.

The field days offer a good insight into the Horticulture and Agriculture world. There were displays and demonstrations from hydroponics, controlled environments for flower and vegetable production, fertiliser types and uses, soil problems and how to treat them, career options

from the universities, cattle, deer. sheep, emus, equipment for all sorts of operations on a rural property and the inventions section to show the initiative of rural farmers.

Also present was a lot of accessory farm fashion that went down well with the students. They gained a lot from meeting people from this section of our work force and to see first hand the various types of equipment and ideas involved, Mr S. Hodgcon

Rainbows End To start off the year in Science, our first topic was 'Wheels and Weights' in which we covered speed, distance, mass, time, and velocity.

In class we did many theory and practical activities until, we understood how it all worked.

The teacher then organised a day trip for our classroom (1ORT), and 10WG, to visit New Zealand's largest and friendliest fun park Rainbows End. The day was to

consist of educational and fun tasks, involving the rides.

When we arrived everyone was issued with a work sheet, which was shared between two students.

There was no time to stop, as everyone wanted to complete the task sheet first, so they could go on the rides that they enjoy most. I don't think anyone knew that the rides could be so educational.

Everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly, no one left without a smile, and I'm sure they learnt a great deal. I don't think anyone will be able to go to Rainbows End again without thinking about what the rides involve (speed, distance, time. and velocity). Hopefully they carry this programme out for future year 10 students, as it was a very good way to help them learn.

Meeting Mother Nature Our year 12 biology camp was once again held at Waharau. The camp gave us a chance to see how the biological theory we had learnt works in the natural world.Students met Mother Nature and her creatures. We encountered fantails and eels, giant centipedes and rock crabs. We waded through the freezing stream and hiked into the tangled forest. Our graphs were drawn and essays written. Our evening entertainment took us out into a dark and mysterious forest to commune with the glowworms and gaze at the stars. Overall, three days of successful biological study of the relationships of plant and animal life in a New Zealand environment was achieved by all.

Roadshow The 1998 Telecom Technology Science Road Show was at The Manurewa High School from Monday the 3rd - Friday 7th August.

463 students from year 9 visited from our school and over 2000 students visited from the local area.

Students from 10FS were the helpers during the week and the demonstrators were most impressed with their manner and helpfulness.

There were two demonstrations involving gases, sparks, arcs and gherkins (an electricity and chemistry show): the demonstrators were very polished and were always well received by the students.

The show was both enjoyable and educational with hands on experience relating science phenomena to everyday activities.

The programme lasted for 80 minutes and consisted of 55 exhibits exploring themes such as: Astronomy and Earth, Body Works and the Natural Environment, Puzzles, Engineering Materials and the Home Environment.

The five Geography classes in Year 11 went on their annual field work exercise in Term Three to study the operas on a dairy farm in Karaka and the coal mines in Huntly. Students arrived suitably (or unsuitably as some qui, discovered) dressed in their `rural day gear' although the footwear was put to the test as new flash white s. were submerged in nice (also fresh) smelly cow manure. GUMBOOTS ROCK. The highlight of the day some reason appeared to be the lunch stop at the Huntly McDonalds where everyone gorged themselves. Forti: with food and drink helped sustain the afternoon's work, whether it was sketching the open cast mine or ta down details about the farm operas: , Students gained a valuable first hand experic of the two different systems and the exec, will help them with questions in the dreat School C exam.

Awesome Forces at Te Papa In the depths of the Social Science Resource Dungeons the Geography henchmen ponder their latest plan. The question, which NZ tourist attraction should the Year 13 Geography and Tourism students visit?.

"Lets go to Te Papa!!!" cried Miss Briggs, they all laughed heartily, HA Ha... ha ? hmmm .. (thoughtful mischievous glances) Why not? Lets go!!.

And so on the 21st of September the 20 odd (excuse the pun) students and teachers boarded Ansett flight 715, flying with ( the esteemed ? esteamed ? unsteamed?) Richard Prebble. An hour later they landed in Wellington to find an absolutely positively sunny day.

The museum of New Zealand was more like an amusement park than a museum, BUT IT WAS VERY EDUCATIONAL, THIS WAS NOT A FUN TRIP AT ALL, IT WAS BUSINESS. HONEST. A main feature of the museum was the Blastback and Futurerush educatiOnal (ha!) motion rides upon which many a lunch threatened to escape the lunchee. Thanks to the knowledgeable enthusiasm of our Museum Education Tutors many displays were enjoyed including the Golden Days junkshop, corrugated iron Kingswood (`tis all class), Treaty of Waitangi, Britten motorcycle (sexiest bike in the world), skeleton of the all KIWI Phar Lap, and the amazing Monsoon Asia exhibition by Brian Brake.

As the day drew to an end, task sheets completed and without an earthquake, they left for the local McD's, dining with none other than Gary McCormick (stylish).

With an hour or so before the flight out they attempted a whirlwind tour of Wellington. They passed the Basin Reserve, scene of many a NZ cricket victory (or was it defeat?), stopping briefly at the Beehive to hound some MPs (none were home though). After which they hooned up Mt Victoria to look at the city nightscape.

Hooned as in the bus driver thought it was Mt Panorama, - those cliffs looked even higher going at 60km/hr around sharp bends on a steep and narrow lane.

After an even quicker descent (was that a red light?) they returned to the airport eager to be heading home, so eager in fact that a certain someone left a certain present sitting on a chair in the boarding lounge.

So ended the most stylish, upmarket, school trip this year.

And thus the staff looked upon it, and they knew it was good.

Year 10 Enterprise Studies The year 10 students have had an excellent year with 1998 being a year of firsts. Enterprise Studies is a very action packed course that aims to develop Entrepreneur skills and qualities and provides students with an opportunity to prove that "They Can Do It!"

Timeless Tableware Post Trade Fair Report The trade fair was a great success. We set up our table using the same colour scheme as our products( gold, white and black) - to promote a corporate look and overall theme to our products.

This year saw our first trip. To help study the Risk topic students went to "Rocknasium" an indoor rock climbing experience to try out a personal risk situation, and see control processes at work, a very rewarding experience for all.

Most of our products sold. The candles were the most successful product they sold very East - if we had the opportunity to continue our business we would make more candles - they were fast to make and cheap to produce. The candelabras did not work out as good as we expected. We learnt that when people are in a production line and one part of :he product is not made properly then the whole product suffers.

However, we managed to adapt our original pattern and created a simpler design.

We also ran our first Trade Fair. This is where students were given an opportunity to market and sell the products they had designed and made. It was a most successful evening with all students reporting a profit being made, that they could keep.

One group of students also entered the BP Community Challenge for the first time, this is a nationwide competition where students had to identify a community organisation and design and plan a resource they could use. Our group of students identified Hillpark Postcare Centre, and designed and planned a bag storage unit for the students and a new computer desk. The group received a MERIT award for their entry and they now get to coordinate the construction of this project with funding of $900 being provided

by BP, well done to those students.

We made an overall profit of $71.25 from the trade fair. We had a vote as to what we finally wanted to do with our profit. Suzanne suggested that we donate the money to a charity.

The SPCA was the one that we chose.

We would like to acknowledge the help received from the Art and Technology Departments, and from the local businesses who helped in the delivery of Enterprise Studies, and hope that our achievements this year will continue and that students will reap the benefits that the programme offers them.

The Cultural Council A group of 25 senior students cheerfully accepted the responsibility of running the "front of house" duties for the year. This job, although not glamorous, is vital if various functions are to run smoothly.

They demonstrated great maturity

and patience as they smilingly took tickets, ushered people to their seats, sold copious quantities of sweets, made endless cups of tea and assisted people in finding their way around the maze called The Manurewa High School.

This team, led by Miss Briggs and Mrs Lal, worked quietly and unobtrusively behipd the scenes for The Enrolment Evening, Publicity Evening, Touch of Magic Evening, Musical Production, and Talent Quest.

The tireless efforts of this professional group were greatly appreciated.

HISTORY TRIPS In February the entire history department took off in buses for an afternoon at the Auckland museum to research parts of the syllabus presented in "Scars on the Heart". It all went smoothly with students running all round the exhibition with pens, clipboards and tasksheets until a fire alarm went off and we had to evacuate the building. This was a reminder of school where false alarms in term one came with monotonous regularity.

for School Certificate. We, spent some time looking over the frigate "Waikato" which was decommissioned later in the year.

Later in March the Year 13s went to the Northern Waikato to research the New Zealand Wars, a topic given a lot of publicity in James Belich's

TV series in June. The clouds fool threatening all day and we decill at the last minute to reverse order in which we visited sites order to make the most of the weather. The trip ended with a vi to the Golden Arches at Bomb, where we ate our burgers a completed our tasksheets.

Early in March the Year 11 classes went to the Devonport Naval Base, North Head, and Bastion Point. The weather was great and we had a full and enjoyable day completing tasks Below: Lulu, Melanie, and Scott at Whanganta on Year 43 History Trip.

CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP 1998 has been another fun-Filled year in which the group has worked hard on assembly productions in terms one and three, and meetings on a variety of topics were taken by individual group members in terms two and four. Once again, the school enjoyed our humorous productions with a serious message.

The Easter assembly dealt with the theme of acceptance, and concluded with a very moving testimony from Anna Murphy. In term four we presented the idea that the Christian gospel is not just for those with deep personal problems but it also brings a fresh dimension to those whose lives are going well. The life of St Paul was used as the model for this. Once again, the production ended with a testimony, this time from a modem-day Paul (Marshall) who was able to share both pain and hope coming out of the recent tragic death of his brother.

YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHERS TAKE ON THE MIGHTY WAIHIHI For three long days and two even longer nights in late March, th Year 12 Geography students and staff observed, measure graphed and wrote up a series of exercises looking at th interactions of the Waharau Stream (aka the Mighty Waihilu with the soils, vegetation and relief of the local catchment.

The students worked hard all day and sat up until the wee sma hours to write up their reports. The staff, Mrs Dobric, Miss C and Mr Hornblow (plied with coffee) kept up a constant source o advice and entertainment. Camp-mother, Mrs Churchill dished up a constant supply of wholesome good food that enabled students to fire on all cylinders. Over 300 good reasons why peas should not be part of the staple diet were provided by Miss Cox but true to form Mr Hornblow overruled her and will ensure each year this important delicacy continues on the menu.

We enjoyed a number of meetings taken entirely by group members who showed real talent in communicating aspects of the Christian faith.

Students were divided up into groups and each had a turn at measuring or recording. Data was shared (pilfered/sold) in the main hall after the exercises. Unfortunately, the geographers were not able to control the weather; perhaps it was due to the absence of Mr VK, but the fieldwork went on regardless of the very heavy rain on day two. Stafford Williams, Paul Millar, and Maree Allen solved this weather problem by wearing black plastic rubbish sack rain attire (functional yet not overly attractive).

At the end of term one we were saddened by the departure of our, friend and school chaplain, Jergun, who has returned to his family homeland "across the ditch'.' We miss his lively personality, caring heart, and skill in productions very much.

The Biology students who take Geography as well deserve a medal for having five days away on camp, and by the end of the week,. a number would have easily got parts as zombies in a Wes Craven movie. The bus trip back to school on Friday afternoon was definitely a very quiet trip, everyone including the author fell asleep.

Year 13 Geography Field Trip to Port Waikato On Thursday 26 March the entire Year 13 Geography classes, minus Chris who probably slept in, departed for the wild and windswept regions of the west coast wilderness.

The bravest of them all were the fearless teachers - Mr VK, Mrs Dobric, and Mr Hornblow. They were prepared and ready - ready to climb the cliff; ready to direct the forced march, I mean wander up the beach; ready to fight the pingao holding back the sandunes; and most important of all, ready to dive into the surf at a moment's notice should there be a missing lemon.

Students were busy. Students were listening. Students were writing.

Students were measuring. Students were timing lemons. (WHAT??!)

Where have all the lemons gone??

Oh no, Amy and Emma have dropped the lemons!! Don't be silly, that's what they were supposed to do!! And so, wet and dripping, they finally returned. Amy and Emma, as well as the lemons. Perhaps next year we could time the longshore drift by seeing how long it takes the students to float up the coast!!

(Now, that's a thought.)

and blew the sand dunes in last year, they told us. That's why there's a large gap up there, people!

They also found parts of the beach that weren't there last year. That was interesting. They'd make great detectives.

We're not really sure why the beach needed to be measured. We KNEW how steep the dunes were by walking up them. Why couldn't we just write a poem about it and take a photo of us all puffed and wheezing? But no, accurate measurements to the last grain of sand were required as the sweat poured off them, the sun beat down, the last drop of water was drained from the drink bottle, and then ...... the string broke and they had to start again... Oh no!!

Ditto for the beach. We knew how long it was.

This was detected by the movement of the sun across the sky as our journey went on and on and on. Next year we're going to take a flag to plant on the top of the hill when we get to the end of the spit and climb up and see the WHOLE WORLD BELOW!! It was worth it.

The entertainment at lunchtime was provided by the local youth.

No, not a rock band, though there were plenty of rocks to band away on. They were the wheeled youth, practising their maths on the sand.

They were good at circles, but couldn't do squares. It was hard to stop laughing when their car stopped while screeching up the hill from the beach trying to look cool. We were all glad there were more of us than them. There is safety in numbers, especially when there is a big bus in case you need to run away and hide. But we didn't. We just ate our lunch and watched the entertainment. Can we book it for next year? Don't tell Mr Parlane, but we haven't worked out how to put this into our risk management sheet yet; the best we could come up with were Z nails to sprinkle on the beach to protect ourselves from the big circles when we measure the south end of the beach. It's more straight-forward and effective than Mrs Dobric standing there looking heavy and scaring them away. And popped tyres would be funnier than Mrs Dobric any day.

So, the day passed. The students didn't realise it then, but this was the start - of a long and lonely journey into assignment-land.

They fought their way through, and came out winners. It was good practice for the next one ll ulurlu Geography RAZ. We ICsiowll!!! II!!!

SERVICE WITH A SMILE An exciting new venture has happened this year with the installation of a commercial kitchen and attached restaurant - a subject called Hospitality and Catering.

Working in partnership with the Manukau Institute of Technology students have been able to study units of work that will be recognised in the Food and Catering industry.

Gaining recognised workplace qualifications.

Working in a realistic commercial environment right here at school, students have catered and waited on a number of functions. There has been many a frantic moment which is quickly replaced with a feeling of satisfaction by the smile from a satisfied guest.

Students have learnt much about customer service, preparation and service of food, table and beverage service , food hygiene and first aid.

Some thoughts from students of Hospitality and Catering "Well the most fun thing about Hospitality and Catering was working as a class and helping each other out working towards the common goal of preparing and serving food."

A silent epic, a musical treat.

Twenty senior students under the expert guidance of Mr Lees and Miss Washer attended what for many was the cultural highlight of the year. The St. James Theatre, its glory days long past, though not of the Ben Hur era , was the location of this event. Nathan, our student of sartorial elegance, epitomized the dress of the 1920's. Although the seats were somewhat worn and painful, the students were engrossed.

Many had never seen a silent movie on the full screen nor heard an orchestra. All enjoyed the event.

The chariot race still enthralled the modern audience. The staircases were lined with people in Roman army costume. At the end of the performance we then made our way to that establishment of culinary delight, Macdonalds, to munch our way through toga burgers and fries. Such cultural excursions have become an integral part of The Manurewa High School.

POSTSCRIPTUM

In keeping with the Roman period, lighting on the stairway out was subdued (non -existent ). Stepping out into this abyss the Emperor found that to his surprise he could not walk on air and hit the ground forcefully. There ensued a period of less than dignified scrambling as the divine Emperor struggled to regain control of his demeanor.

The senior students set off once again into the mists of Waharau, back in time to an earlier age when man served his state first and mankind second. The excitement, the joy and the work ... oh the endless work that appeared out of these mists saw previous perceptions and ideals swept away. The Neronian figure of Mr Kilgour, our beloved leader, fought these mists and then there appeared light. No it was not Mr Lees opening the oven door to see what was cooking, it was knowledge. The faces of those who now saw was ... Now let's get real! Sixty students and four staff members set off. The purpose - to understand the linkage between the different periods of art and to gain the skills necessary for the analysis of painting/architecture and sculpture.

Mr Petersen's cake decoration feats were unparalleled and second only to Janis' piercing screams that were emitted during a game of touch (Ryan decided that Janis needed some cooling off, since she decided Ryan needed some Marinda down his back). Mrs Snedden's camp organisational ability was greatly appreciated by all as was Mrs Gordan's sketching classes. Both staff and students returned exhausted but appreciative of the Board of Trustee's encouragement of cross curricular activities within the school.

Jus making it to our seats we were ready to enjoy the live theatre experience. Set in modern dress (Mr Lees the purist, wanted togas) the death of Caesar and the destruction of Brutus and his fellow conspirators greatly enthralled the audience. Mark Antony's oration albeit said in a blatantly false American accent still has impa on the modern audience. On way home the presentation of th play was dissected and debate ensued. THE INAUGURAL YEAR 11 STUDY CAMP Let the muses speak... as there are none present I will spout forth great mumbling utterances.

On the weekend of the 12th of September the students possessed by 11LE, 11BL, and the confused intellects of struggling bursary passersto-be (they hope), set out for the great abode that is Waharau. With the great skills of their blessed educators they...?

Ah, it was enlightenment! The examination skills, the study skills, the problem-solving skills... the enhanced motivation entrusted in us by the intellectually superior Mr Pinto (who was readily available in the designated rugby playing area).

Despite the negativity wafting from the souls of several members of the party (which was soon exorcised), we proceeded to have an historic meeting of minds. In some cases... well, we're not miracle workers. The culinary masterpieces created

by Zeus (the revered Mr Lees) topped the occasion with great class and glamour (and plenty of sour cream). And then there was the cake tin...

Oh well, deviants shall be punished.

Special Education The Manurewa High School Experience Unit There appears to be some mystique, at least in the eyes of the majonty of mainstream students, as to the function of the Experience Unit.

The students in `XBlock' generally have some difficulties in the learning of academic subjects. Some students also face the challenge of a physical disability, something that we bodily-able people are fortunate enough not to have to contend with.

Life presents challenges enough, without this. Many students have suffered trauma, through a variety of incidents, and this can lead to hurt and present a life-long challenge to overcome. All the students in the Experience Unit face challenges which most mainstream teenagers never have.

The educational programmes offered in the Experience Unit follow very closely those offered throughout the school. In addition a Life Skills programme is available and the students have the advantage of Work Experience in the community, which can lead to employment when the students leave school - a very valuable asset in today's world where jobs can be difficult to find.

The Experience Unit is fortunate to be placed in The Manurewa High School, which fully supports both the students and teachers, involved.

Integration and reverse integration is encouraged, specialised resources and equipment are made available and every consideration is given to whatever is needed to meet the special requirements of the students.

This includes both paraprofessional help and assistance from professionals within the community.

1998 has presented us with another challenge in the form of 'Special FUN COOKING Education 2,000'. THE HOMAI VISUAL RESOURCE ROOM The Homai Visual Resource Room is unique, as The Manurewa High School is the only secondary school in New Zealand which has such a unit to support visually impaired students. This year there have been twenty two students in the Resource Room. Some of these students live locally, others travel from all over Auckland, or other parts of New Zealand and reside at the hostel at Homai Vision Education Centre. At The Manurewa High School the students have the best of both worlds, in that they are fully mainstreamed yet also benefit from the support of the Resource Room.

Staff in the Resource Room provide a variety of services ranging from producing resources in braille and large print, to supporting students in classroom situations as required.

This year there have been some notable achievements. Dean Jackson performed a solo in the school musical "Half a Sixpence". Pauline Mataio played touch rugby for the school team and Janine Smith was a member of the school debating team. Waipounamu Silbery, an accomplished guitarist, had his own track on the "A Touch of Magic" compact disk produced by the school.

Faaolo Utumapu, a recent past pupil, is currently studying for a Bachelor of Communications at Auckland Institute of Technology. Annette JacksonPotter, a Civil Engineering student, has achieved success in swimming and is hoping to participate in the Sydney Paralympics 2000. Several former students are travelling to India in November to participate in the World Blind Cricket Series.

The Resource Room aims to support visually impaired students within The Manurewa High School to enable them to achieve their full potential in all areas and to provide the necessary skills to take them into the future.

Camp Waiheke 10 EV From Tuesday 23 June to Friday 26 June, 10 EV had a fun-filled experience horse-riding, kayaking, abseiling and playing sports teams from Waiheke College.

They also enjoyed waterbombing the teachers and going on night-time raids with shaving foam.

Waiheke was a great place to be, an excellent location.

Technology The 1998 Wellsford Trolley Challenge North Island, yet our closest rivals turned out to be Papakura High School. The Silverbeest performed well in the individual races, gaining a second, a third, an accident and another second in the heats, which was good, but not enough to place us in the finals. Our only chance for glory was to convert our single-seat custom designed trolley into a tandem racer. That was our lunchtime project.

.s an incentive from the Counties lanukau Blue Light Organisation le Year 11 and 12 Automotive [asses were invited to participate in ie Wellsford Trolley Derby, which /as held on the final day of the eptember holidays. This was to ecome the emphasis of two of the )ur Automotive classes' design and ractical work for term three. he Year 12 trolley, which had been riginally designed as a four-wheeler, nded up balancing precariously on nly three wheels, with a rather angerous, yet quite ingenious, .ont braking and steering set up.

Infortunately, this trolley never ianaged to reach Wellsford, yet it still being refined for next year. he option three Year 11 class, owever, entered a package which â&#x153;&#x201C;as aptly titled "The Silverbeest", â&#x153;&#x201C;hick came about due to the allluminium polished skin which ally enclosed the driver, reducing the ehicles drag coefficient and reflect1g into the eyes of the competitors. he second part of the plan idn't actually work as the race day

turned out to be extremely overcast, but still, the theory was sound.

After completion and testing (which took place in the final week of the holidays by a few dedicated individuals), The Silverbeest was tucked away, ready for raceday on Sunday 11 October. The morning of the 11th was extremely miserable, with heavy rain and high winds.

Numerous members of the team assumed that racing would be cancelled- but they were wrong.

The team , which assembled at 0630 hrs. was to be made up of one devoted student and one rather stupid teacher (who shall remain nameless, but could never have lived with himself if that final day of the holidays had been utilised as a sleepin day. You see, this whole project was based around moral fibre and testosterone).

The 'team' arrived at the Police station and then cruised on up to the venue, an hour north of Manurewa.

The racing was close and intense, all day long. There were over one hundred entries from all over the

With no time for testing available, the suicidal pavilion passenger-the nameless fool of a teacher, straddled the back of the vehicle and clung on for dear life as Chris piloted the vehicle down the hill, past the speed camera, across the finish line and into the sand trap, and on about another hundred metres (we had had to remove one of our brakes to accomodate the passenger, which meant there virtually was no stopping power at all). We decided to let Papakura finish just ahead of us, in case they were needed as a final form of braking.

It was safer this way, and it also meant that we ended up with the silver medal- quite appropriate for the `Beese.

Information and Communication Technology The school now has in excess of 350 computers and 25 laptops. 220 of the computers are on the student's network in four suites of 32 machines, and others of 24, 16, 14 for cross curriculum use and a pod of eight in the new science block. Many others are distributed through all the departments for staff and student use.

Our goal in providing this service to teachers and students is to promote educational excellence in The Manurewa High School by facilitating research, resource sharing, innovation, and communication. All teachers have been provided with e-mail accounts along with students who are prepared to pay $20 to cover costs.

The Manurewa High School has continued to expand and develop its excellent computer facilities for student and staff use. One of the computer suits of 32 machines was upgraded from 386 to Pentium 200 computers for 1998. 16 of the best of the old machines have been used in a computer pod for the maths department. The library was linked to the student network through a fibre optic cable to provide Internet access along with all the other multimedia applications and learning resources. The library now has nine multimedia machines in addition to the six machines providing the book catalogue.

A school web site, http//manurewa.school.nz, has been created to provide information on the school. An Intranet has also been created to provide information, training and Internet links for various curriculum areas for both staff and students.

Other interesting new additions are the digital camera and data projector , and the scanners which are very effective. The purchase of the digital camera has proved very popular on school research trips and other activities around the school. It has provided very valuable records field trips and of research that students can use in their reports. The new data projector has enhanced assemblies, reinforcing the points being made. A number of staff presentations received a round of student applause. Students and staff are also able to use it when presenting their PowerPoint presentations.

While we have had Internet access in the school for over 5 years, the upgrade of the main server has enabled staff and students to been provided with their own logon and storage space. This has also provided better control of the Internet and network.

All students who have signed the Computer and Internet Acceptable Use Policy now have access to the Internet along with all the other research tools provided on the network. The Internet offers vast, diverse, and unique
