From the Editor We hope this year's edition has achieved its purpose, a complete record of the '1997 school year.

The copy supplied by the staff and students (on disk) is sent to the printer who sets it out in columns and returns it to the editorial team who then lay it up on specially prepared cards with relevant photos and illustrations. Fitting all of our wonderful achievements in to eighty-eight pages is very difficult! Not to mention meeting publication deadlines and ensuring that last minute events are included. We manage to include the current year's senior prize lists, but unfortunately the magazine is printed before the junior prize list is available. It is published in the magazine the following year. Every effort has been made to include all school events and everyone should be mentioned at least once!

Principal's Message 1997 has been a significant year for The Manurewa High School. The student roll peaked at 1800, placing even more pressure on our accommodation. Fortunately, the new Science Faculty block was completed on time and occupied for the start of the school year. It was officially opened by the Minister of Education, The Right Hon. Wyatt Creech in March. Also completed was the upgrading and extension of the staffroom, the establishment of two new computer suites and a textiles technology room. During Term One the remainder of the refurbishment was completed - the transformation of the former 'S' Block into the Languages Faculty and a major east/west access through the school.

Once again a team of enthusiastic, hardworking administrators have led our multi-talented staff by setting high expectations for all of our students. This positive school environment continues to support outstanding academic performance and consequently has enhanced selfimage for all students. Examples of this include the excellent success rate of students in the Manukau Science & Technology Fair (once again The Manurewa High School was the top school) and the various Australasian examinations and competitions in English, Mathematics and Science. Also three students were chosen to represent New Zealand at international seminars and study tours.

It is my belief that academic success can only be achieved if students learn in a safe and well-ordered environment where there are clearly defined rules and well established methods of recognising their achievements. I am well aware that some parents could be concerned that the large size of our school may be a problem for their son or daughter. We have been very award of this possibility and the Director of Human Resources has ensured that students pastoral needs are wellcatered for.

The size of The Manurewa High School brings with it very considerable benefits of scale, quite apart from the flexibility which is derived from an annual budget which is in excess of $7,000,000. In addition to delivering the full National Curriculum, our school is now able to offer a wide range of additional subjects and an extensive programme of Level 1 and 2 Unit Standard courses. Examples of these are the introduction of modules in Years 12 and 13, and technology strands in Year 9. Technology at our school is much more than merely using technological equipment in specific lessons. It is more the application of the technology process into, and across, the curriculum area.

New courses planned for 1998 include catering and hospitality and tourism.

The Manurewa High School is a school which caters for the full ability range. We recognise, therefore, that whilst not all our students will be academically gifted, many will bring to the school other talents and skills which we wish to encourage and develop.

One of the principal benefits of scale available to our students is the very extensive range of co-curricula activities on offer, catering for all tastes and interests ranging from chess to hockey, with the myriad of activities• - musical, artistic, dramatic and sporting which you would expect in a lively and dynamic school.

The Arts have been particularly strong this year. Numerous students have gained success in photographic competitions, and the annual Art exhibition gave our students an opportunity to display and sell their work which was of exceptional quality.

The school's enormous wealth of musical talent was captured on a CD 'Manurewa Magic'. Sales of this have been astounding throughout New Zealand after its airing on national radio and television. A second CD will be produced shortly.

The Concert Band gained a gold award in the Auckland Secondary Schools competitions and our choir

was chosen to paticipate in the National Finals, but were unable to do so because of their trip to Samoa.

It was a massive undertaking and my thanks to Mr Nigel Weeks, Director of Music, and so many staff and parents who made it possible.

Many accolades were received including those from the Minister of Education, Wyatt Creech and the NZ High Commissioner in Samoa when our choir won the prestigious Teuila Festival, All this, and a professional and outstanding production of The Wizard of Oz' made even more special by the inclusion of primary students from Central School.

Sports teams were not to be outdone. During the year three badminton teams, girls and boys table tennis, girls volleyball and the girls touch rugby team all won the Secondary Counties/Manukau schools competitions in their various codes. The girls touch rugby team went on to win the National Finals.

Congratulations to all concerned.

During term two I embarked on my Woolf Fisher fellowship and was able to visit schools in Canada, USA and the UK. An interesting and valuable experience during which I was able to compare education among these countries and our own school. My thanks to those staff who acted in senior administration positions, in particular to Mrs Dixon who was Acting Principal during my absence.

I thank most sincerely all staff for their tremendous efforts during the year. My thanks and appreciated go to the Magazine Editor, Mrs H Kilgour, and also, Mr R Kilgour for his untiring efforts throughout the year in ensuring that all school activities were captured for publicity purposes and the school magazine. The magazine is an excellent record of the diversity and wealth of talent in our school.

My best wishes for the future to all students leaving school this year.

Woolf Fisher Fellowship During term two this year I travelled overseas on a three month study tour of secondary schools. This was made possible by the Woolf Fisher fellowship which is awarded to two or three principals in New Zealand each year by the Woolf Fisher Trust. Sir Woolf Fisher was the founder of Fisher & Paykel and was very keen to foster education in New Zealand. He established this trust fund to enable principals to travel overseas to keep up with the latest developments and to meet with fellow principals.

I began my tour in Mission City which is 70km east of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This was a nostalgic trip for me as I had spent three years early in my career teaching in Mission Secondary School (1967-69). Two teachers were still teaching at the school who had been on the staff with me! I was rather surprised at the changes in the school, particularly with the many ways in which they were having to deal with at risk students'. They were even running a Saturday school for students under suspension contracts and/or who had been truant and had work to catch up on. A 'Breakfast' club also existed for students to meet before school started for 'extra tuition'.

During my time in Canada I managed a trip into the interior of British Columbia to the Okanagan the fruit bowl' of British Columbia.

From Vancouver I travelled down the West Coast of the United States by Amtrac Rail and visited schools in Seattle, San Fransisco and Los Angeles. The scenery was spectacular and with very rich farm land and extensive urban areas. I visited large schools, both in the inner cities and outer suburbs.

Without exception security was the number one problem within the school. Up to six security guards are employed, security cameras are in evidence everywhere, staff wear identification badges, and entry into many areas of the school is restricted. The student body is

multi-ethnic with up to 60 different groups in some schools.

Technology varied enormously reflecting the huge differences between the schools depending on the wealth of the area that they were serving (much of the money for schools in the United States is raised through local taxes). One school had inter-active multi media systems in each classroom, and a control panel that gave access to any information required via the internet, CNN, Nasa and CD Roms.

The more wealthy schools also had magnificent buildings and facilities with all-weather flood-lit athletic tracks and football stadiums, enclosed heated swimming pools and huge gymnasiums with indoor athletic training tracks!.

The next segment of my tour incorporated visits to schools in England and Wales. My first visit was to Simon Langton Grammar School, in Canterbury Kent, a school with whom we had forged links through teacher exchanges.

An interesting variety of schools exist in England and Wales ranging from Grammar schools to Comprehensive schools.

Grammar schools are still very traditional, but with very successful academic results and extensive co-curricular programmes. The new Labour Government is attempting to raise the standard of education and now has a 'zero tolerance of failing schools'. They have listed 300 schools that are failing and named 10 schools that risk closure. I managed to visit many schools which were grantTop:

My wife joined me for part of tour, and we found time to râ‚Ź and enjoy the scenery countryside. We spent two we in London,10 days touring Italy three days in Paris. The trip on new Eurostar train from Lando' Paris through the 'chunnel' was interesting experience.

On our return to New Zealand stopped over in Canada Hawaii.

Staff Notes In a large school with 108 staff there are inevitably new positions created and staff leaving. During Mr Thomson's absence in term two, Mrs Dixon was Acting Principal, Mr Hornblow was Acting Second Principal and Mr Van Kralingen acting Deputy Principal.

During the year we also welcomed Mrs Jean Estall-Slater (Reading), Ms Vivienne Evaroa (Learning Adjustment Dept). During the year we farewelled Mr Shane Phillips (PE), Ms Barbara Harvey (Reading).

Also, Mr P Cook (Learning Adjustment Dept) who took leave of absence for the remainder of the year and 1998.

At the time of writing these notes the following staff will be leaving at the end of the year: Miss Keremestevsky, Miss White and Miss Booker. Miss Gallot has resigned her position effective from the end of term one, 1998. To those staff membes who are leaving, our grateful thanks for your contribution to the school while you were with us, and we wish you every success in the future.

During the year the school was deeply saddened by the death of Mrs Naline Sumer who was an excellent and experienced teacher in Biology and Science. She was also the organiser for the Manukau City Science and Technology Fair.

Mrs Sumer's contribution to the school was enormous and she is sadly missed.

Royal Society Fellowship Mr A Stafford, Head of the Mathematics Department has just been awarded a Royal Society Fellowship to undertake research into his teaching subject. His topic is Resourcing Mathematics Teachers for Conceptual Computer - Based Teaching. Mr Stafford will be hosted by the Mathematics Department at Auckland University and will be on leave from The Manurewa High School for twelve months. We wish him every success in his research.

Top Scholars in 1997 Dux Our top scholar for 1997 is Tom Huang. Tom and his family came to New Zealand only 6 years ago, and in that t Tom has learnt and mastered the English language and has blossomed not only personally but academically. favourite subjects have been Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, Statistics and Science. He has won distinctions in Ti Tennis and was the captain of the school Table Tennis team in 1996, when the team was placed 5th in the Nadi Championships. The team was again placed in this year's competitions but was unable to attend championships. Next year Tom hopes to commence a conjoint degree in Japanese and Engineer Congratulations to Tom for winning the Dux award for 1997.

Proxime Accesit Our second top scholar for 1997 is Craig Pretty. Craig has enjoyed Physics and Science this year and achie excellent results in these. He has been the captain of the Hockey team for the last three years, and is a mem of the Environmental Council. Outside of school, he enjoys canoeing, and mountain biking. He now plays Mo Hockey and will be participating in the Coast to Coast triathlon soon. Next year Craig hopes to comment conjoint degree in Engineering and Science. Congratulations to Craig for winning the Proxime Accesit award 1997.

1997 Prefects The year of 1997 was a worthwhile one for the Prefects team, as with continued teamwork and dedication, we managed to make it successful.

The year began with a four day trip to Rotorua in early March where we all learnt how to mould together as a team and we gained valuable leadership, individual and team skills. It was evident that a great deal of work went into organising the trip, and special thanks must to to Mr Thomson, Mrs Dixon and Miss Moore for their outstanding support over the past year.

The next major mission was the 1997 Prefects Ball where the team, once again joined together and with the strong support of the senior school, organised a very successful and enjoyable night Thanks must also go to the Deputy Head Prefects, Aaron Ross, Lisa Patterson, Nicola Slade and Steven Woodman for their ideas and input, which we greatly appreciated.

We would also like to thank the Prefects who managed to hold together to form a very dedicated and successful team.

New Science Block

The minister chatted with students about their science experiments and tested the new lab equipment.

This one-level building contains 12 laboratories, resource and technicians rooms, a science display area and two computer suites. The facility is part of a $2.8 million upgrade at the school where the student roll is expected to increase to 1850 next year.

Goat Island Report If someone asked you the advantages of getting up at 6:30 in the morning to be at school; by 7:00, I doubt that you could come up with even one. But on the 9th of February 1997, the year 13 biology classes, lead by Mrs Howard had an excellent reason for being up with the sparrows. Today would be our Goat Island trip. It promised a day of sun, sand and sea life and by the end of the day we had a generous helping of all of them.

After arriving at the already clouded Goat Island Marine Reserve at Leigh, we were rearing to go. So, armed with our wetsuits, snorkels, fins and frozen peas we headed out into the watery unknown. It was like stepping into a different world. A world of seaweed and all kinds of marine life. Snapper and blue maomao swam around us hoping to share some of the frozen peas that were being tossed around. Piper sparkled in the waves looking like tiny marlin, kahawai and parore zoomed through the water and around the reefs: spottys, demoiselle, blennies and triple fin slipped in and out of the writhing forests of seaweed and kina.

More than a couple of times, I went on a mad dash to touch a leather jacket that had come so close but then darted away with its fins fluttering. If you were lucky (or unlucky) you would have seen a majestic stingray sliding off along the bottom of the sea floor, probably annoyed at the troop of cave explorers. When our peas and bodies were finally exhausted and many people were sunning themselves on the beach, we packed up to go home, tired and with the memories of all that we'd encountered.

Year 12 Biology Camp Biology camp started on the 2nd of April, just after Easter, and finished on the 4th of April. The year 12 students set off to Waharau but unfortunately one of the buses got a flat tyre. Since one bus arrived late it was straight into work. We were separated into three different groups and each teacher took a different group. The work was really fun and it was interesting because we learnt first hand about the importance of the interaction of plants and animals rather than learning second hand from books.

We went on hikes through the bush and studied the native flora and fauna, walked down to the stream and undertook a study of fresh water life in the stream.

At the science roadshow at school during the week 8th to the 12th of September. It involves the following range of themes, such as electricity, magnetism, motion, sound, light, heat, illusions, biological principles and building principles and building processes.

It has 60 exhibits, highlights include, a ride on hover craft; a large tube that fills with the amount of water in your body; find out what it is like to stand inside a bubble; a wayward ball bearing that sets off a chain of events; an industrial method used to test how full a sealed can is.

ZOO TRIP 7th May 1997 Early this year, 46 biology students visited the Auckland Zoo for a brief Anthropology lesson. The weather was warm and the sky clear and for once the animals were active. We visited the Macdonald' s Rain Forest first and were immediately impressed by the tamarins who had lost their fear of humans and were calmly walking along the wooden fence separating us from them!

The Siamang gibbon apes had begun their "calling" and entertained everybody for at least half an hour as they "boomed" out their morning territorial call.

The highlight of the visit was the students observations of the chimpanzees, their similarity to humans being very obvious.

Top Student in Bursary

Monty Burrows was the top student in New Zealand in the bursary science exam in 1997. To receive his award he travelled to Government house Wellington to attend the Top Scholars Function.

Mrs Clarkson, Monty's science teacher, believes he was a student who worked hard and deserved this honour.

Monty now has a scholarship to study medicine at Auckland University.

The 1997 Environmental Council: The 1997 Environmental Council consisted of 20 active year 12 and year 13 students. This year the Council decided to focus on one major activity. We decided to fundraise for the Auckland Zoo's new multi-million dollar enclosure known as the "Pridelands" which is expected to open in December 1997.

Conservation Studies in France Jo Parlane who is in year 13 and studying biology enjoyed the summer sun in the south of France.

She was among a group of 12 young New Zealand students selected from 150 applicants to spend a month visiting Provence as part of an exchange organised by the NZ France Friendship Fund. f he group undertook conservation studies in the National parks in this attractive region of France, as well as exploring French culture. Their French counterparts will visit New Zealand in December for the second part of the exchange.

BLOOD BANK There was an excellent response to the collection by the Auckland Regional Blood Services held on Wednesday 30/4/97. A total of 157 donors attended and 130 units of blood were collected, including those of 72 new donors!

A significant feature of the blood collected here, at The Manurewa High School, is the participation by the staff, and on this occasion approximately 27 staff members donated. This 'leadership by example' obviously has a favourable influence on the number of students who donate.

There is always a great need for blood, for many varied reasons, so with this in mind, a special 'thankyou' to those, (both students and staff alike),who donated on the day.

We felt that it was important to assist them as the aim of the exhibit is to enable the giraffes, lions rhinos and baboons to live in a more natural environmental. The development also includes importing more lions and rhinos as part of the international breeding program.

Each Friday for four weeks various groups had a sausage sizzle at lunchtime. We eventually raised $380.00 for the zoo. This sum of money also entitled the Council to a brick that will feature in the new exhibit. The brick will be titled "The 1997 MHS Environmental Council".

The more active members of the council also assisted Mr Hodgson with painting more rubbish tins and with various working bees over the year.

MYSTERY CREEK Students from year 12 horticulture left bright and early for a day at the Mystery Creek Field day at Hamilton. There they were impressed by the range of information and equipment available for horticulture and agricultural use. Of particular interest was the hort research projects being undertaken at the present time.

Their Aussie teacher (Mr Hodsgon) provided entertainment by stalling the minibus a number of times on the steep hill!

Siemens Scienc School As a fifth former doing scie had the chance to apply he Siemens Science School in August holidays of 1996. Se students from Manurewa School were selected. The three days provided excellent opportunity to learn in about science and I would like take this opportunity which t offer to the secondary sch students in this area.

International Space Camp My name is Emma Rudsits and in July 1997 I attended the International Space Camp, in Huntsville, Alabama, USA. The camp hosted students and teachers from 24 countries around the world.

We are placed in groups and given a position. I was a payload Specialist, they are in charge of special payloads, and scientific experiments.

Each group had 31 hour simulated space missions, in the orbiter, space station, and Mission Control.

These 3 missions were followed by an extended duration 6 how mission, in which I- was Space Station commander and later Payload Specialist 1.

Our EDM included launching the Shuttle docking with Space Station transferring the crews and landing the orbiter safely.

Hilary and Hilary provided a most relaxed and rural "workshop" for the biology teachers at Ambury Park on Thursday afternoon. We tried drafting Perendales from Romneys, discussed the merits of cross bred, and pure merino wools, and attempted to identify the Jerseys from the Fresians.

Ambury Farm:

Ambury Park is being developed as a site where the breeding of cattle and sheep can be studied. This particular aspect is of value to the year 11 genetics program and this is a particularly good local resource.

The animals are of a particularly quiet nature but are not pets.

Also roaming the park are a selection of kune kune pigs, fowl yard animals (pedigree unknown) and for authentic country feel; a large rat!

Languages English I N CAELUM ASCENDE This is the fourth year the English Department have published a separate literary magazine. It was established to enable students who wrote quality original work to have that work published. Many established writers in New Zealand had their first experience of being published in their school magazine. It is a tradition we in the English Department would like to see continue. However the constraints of space in the official magazine saw fewer and fewer pieces of work published. It was time to begin a new publication.

We began very tentatively but with the publication this year of a slightly expanded edition and with work of encouraging maturity from all sections of the school body, we feel it is firmly established.

It is available from any teacher of English for $1 Next year I would for contributions welcome selection throughout the first three terms. It is hoped we can have the literary magazine reading for printing by the end of term three.

DEBATING This year five teams were entered into the Auckland Debating Association from this school, There were two teams from years 9 and 10, one from year 11 and two from years 12 and 13. Many new debaters began this year and I hope they will continue next year as it is very important to have that pool of experienced speakers who can think on their feet and turn an argument round to expose a seemingly airtight case to a new interpretation.

Debating develops creative, lateral thinkers at the same time as developing communication skills.

It is a fun way to exercise the brain.

The year 12 and 13 members entered the Advanced Secondary

Schools ADA competition. One team had no one who had debated before so the task in front of them was formidable. They did not win any debates but one of their speakers got best speaker in one debate, and they all learned an awful lot about speaking in public.

The other team just missed out on a quarter final placing.

Some of the moots that were debated were That all the Meek Inherit is the Dirt, That a Person is as Good as their Word and That Captain Cook should have turned back. These topics led to interesting debates.

From the Library It has been another busy year for the library. The librarians have worked well under the able and conscientious leadership of head librarian, Lisi Faletutulu. She has been assisted by a great group of senior students and Year 10's.

A generous donation by founding principal, Alex Maich, saw the setting up of the Alex Maich Collection. This special collection has made possible the purchase of expensive and highly specialised books particularly for Art and Classics students. We were also able to buy an updated edition of World Book Encyclopedia.

It has been a year of consolidation and planning for future technology in the library and we are working towards the introduction of the Internet and further CD Rom facilities. The recent addition of a colour printer has also proved to be most welcome.

The zoo was the venue for this 17

year's librarians' trip.

The meerkats provided a source of entertainment and some sore limbs after crawling through the observation tunnels.

It has been a successful year and we are looking forward to similar success in 1998.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY Every year the Rotary Club organises a model United Nations for senior secondary school students. The aims are to develop an awareness of the role of the United Nations; to introduce participants to some of the wider issues facing the world; to provide a forum in which they can practise and improve their debating and public speaking skills and to provide an opportunity to share their opinions with others, and to make new friendships with people from other schools.

This year our school was represented by Hayley Rawhiti, Craig Montgomery and Selesitina Anitelea. Each school is given a country to represent. The delegates have to research that country's policies and background because they have to negotiate and debate as if they were from that country and represent its philosophies in good faith. We were given China and at the time of MUNA Hong Kong was being handed back to China so it was particularly in the news.

The weekend was thoroughly enjoyable and each of the delegates grew in confidence as they negotiated with the UK delegates over Hong Kong, and defended their place on the Security Council against heated attack.

It is an experience of a lifetime and I would recommend it to any enthusiastic Year 13 budding diplomat

ESOL ESOL English for Speakers of Other Languages 1997 sees the largest number of ESOL students, with the widest diversity of cultures attending our school than ever before. These students account for approximately 12% of the total school population.

Students have arrived throughout the year with varying degrees of English skills - some better at speaking and listening, others more proficient at reading and writing, depending on their background. There are students from Asia - Taiwan, China, Cambodia, Viet Nam, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, from Indonesia, the Phillipines and There has been a huge India. increase in the numbers of students from Korea as well as from The Middle East - Iraq, Libya and Jordan. And we still have Pacific Islanders recently arrived from Fiji (both Indian and Fijian), Samoa and Tonga.

We have had one Hmong refugee from Laos, whose grandparents originated from Mongolia.

He spoke not one word of English, nor was anyone able to communicate with him as his language here was unknown. Later a few common Thai words were discovered, quite an experience!

We welcomed overseas students from Finland, Sweden, Argentina, and for a short period, from Tahiti.

Students From Iraq Since the Gulf War in the Middle East (1990-1991) many Iraqi families have sought refuge in New Zealand.

Extracts from the experiences of some of these students follow . . .

Sherin Shamia was living in Kuwait when the war broke out and her family decided to emigrate.

Yemen was the first country to accept her family, so they went there and began applications to come to New Zealand. They had to prove that they had the required twenty-nine points to qualify for entry, and finally on 8 August 1996 they were able to leave Yemen, six years after fleeing the war.

Sundus Jarallah went to Libya first, then flew to New Zealand via Tunis, Jordan and Singapore.

Sundus is really enjoying being here and has some advice for those who have just arrived, "Do not be upset by living in another country because New Zealand is going to cheer you up."

Atour Kasho left war torn Iraq and went to Syria. Unfortunately life was too difficult there, there was not enough money for rent, clothes, food and many other things. After four and a half years in Syria Atour's family decided to emigrate to New Zealand and arrived on 6 June 1995.

Asian Club 1997 This year the club was more active Over fifty students than ever. attended the AGM where Ellen Chen was voted in as President, Albert Lee as Vice President, Jessica Liao as Secretary and John Chang as Treasurer_ At the end of term one, a group of about twenty-five, with some trepidation, decided to try out horseriding. Clevedon Sunshine Ranch proved an excellent location with its bush clad hills. This was followed by an exciting flying fox and fun on a rope swing - again, a first for many of the students as evidenced by the shrieks of fear - or delight? A superb barbecue was a very pleasant way to end the afternoon. Thanks to Mrs Taylor who joined in the riding and helped with the barbecue.

Japan Report 1997 The one week that we spent on tour was an intensive journey around the major places of cultural significance up and down Japan's main island of Honshuu.

The Japanese have a lot more festivals and celebrations than we do in New Zealand. We came across one of these - the Takayama Festival at the first place we stayed. The Takayama Matsuri is regarded as one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan. It was a collection of elaborate floats that are wheeled around through the city, some of them dating from the 17th Century. Many of them have marionettes that perform for the crowds. One of them - The God of Fortune has 36 strings which require the skills of 8 puppet masters.

Kenrokuen was easily the most beautiful place we went to - ten hectares of amazing Japanese landscape gardens.

It was completed over a span of two centuries in the samurai era. The name "Kenrokuen" means garden combining the six attributes of a perfect garden - spaciousness, seclusion, careful arrangement, antiquity, abundant water and broad views. Within it are sites that you will see nowhere else on earth, the spring gives bloom to 400 cherry blossom trees, there is the Green Waterfall, the Misty pond, and the love trees (two trees that grew towards each other and over time, grafted and became one tree.)

The next day we went to another one of Kyoto's famous sites, Kinkakujii - the Golden Temple.

This multi storied temple is made almost entirely from pure gold and is one of the most famous temples in Japan. The interior of the temple is also supposed to be made from gold - but we couldn't see for ourselves as it wasn't open to the public for viewing.

Hiroshima, while being an amazingly beautiful city - sort of put a damper on our tour as we walked through the Peace Park Museum and saw the horrific damage and pain the atomic bombs caused in Japan. I think it made most of us realise what a

pointless waste of life war is. To signify the hope of the future there is a bell in the Peace Park that people can ring so all the people for miles around can hear - your desire of a peaceful future.

I'm not sure how we managed it but these are only a tiny proportion of the places we went to and the two minutes in which we had to change trains probably helped considerably. These three weeks were a life experience I will never forget.

Twelve Kiwi Kids on a Homestay

After two weeks in the Province totally immersed in French language and culture, twelve High School students and two of their teachers have decided they would like to repeat the experience.

The initiative for this two week trip came from Sandra San Sebastian, teacher of French at The Manurewa High School an Auckland High School with approximately one thousand eight hundred students. 'Ninety of the students made the choice to learn French and among them twelve decided to make this trip which constitutes a true immersion into the French environment, explains this your teacher who organised what represents a new experience for her too. It is not compulsory to learn a foreign language in New Zealand. It is up to the free will of the students.. In this high School they have the option to study Maori, Japanese or French.

These ones have actively chosen to do French and made great efforts to come to New Caledonia,' explained Sandra.

Lodging in pairs Aged between 13 to 16 years, the pupils have raised money themselves, by working in shops or restaurants, two or three times each week, by babysitting or doing computer work. A full year of preparation was by no means too much. They have been welcomed in pairs by New Caledonian and Tahitian families, sharing their daily lives, even going to school with the host children. They have had countless new experiences. They plunged headlong into French pastries such as 'pains au chocolat', 'croissants' or 'croque-monsieur', discovered French cooked lunches, a French-style school canteen, French bread with every meal and slang and euphemisms, moving away from their one dimensional textbook French.

Although our Maori culture group has not had as many performances this year as we usually do, our year has still been a busy one. As usual the year started off with practices and our usual performances at the ASB Auckland Secondary Schools Polynesian Festival. This was the first performance of our controversial haka addressing suicide, spurred not only by the tragic death of school friend Gareth Ball, but numerous other tragedies in our region.

This year we also performed competitively at Turangawaewae marae, Ngaruawahia for Te Arikinui Te Atairangikahu's thirtyfirst celebration of her reign as Maori Queen.

We entertained at the second Hui Ahurea at Western Springs College first up in the morning and faced twenty minutes of torrential rain, which only made us want to perform harder.

This year, apart from being comparatively quieter than usual, was also quite tragic with the paramount chiefs of Maoridom

passing on, including one of our own kaumatua of Ngati Paoa, Waikato descent, Te Kaaho Ohoru and Matiu Rata o Ngapuhi.

Exchange Students Hi everyone!!!

We are Jessica,, Cecilia, Anna and Junko, we have been here this year as exchange students, in the 7th form. But now itis not so long time until we return to our home countries, Sweden, Argentina, Finland and Japan. Our experience in New Zealand and especially 'Manurewa High School' have left a lasting imprint on our lives.

Spending a year at a New Zealand high school IP has been very different, me (Jessica) and Anna have never worn school uniforms before, but we found it all right. And of course all those groups, clubs and sports team that we could take part of.

What a great opportunity we got!! Junko and Anna took part in the choir, which gave them the opportunity to go to Samoa, (lucky, we wanted to go as well, but we can't sing) and they also took part in lots of competitions. Junko played French horn in the concert band. Me, Junko and Anna also had a awesome fun during the production, 'Wizard of Oz'.

While Junko and Anna were busy hiding in the music block, we were running around on the field kicking the soccer ball, we also turned up to some rowing practices, even though it was freezing cold!

We also got to go on some camps, it was the year 9 camp in May, we had heaps of fun with the third formers, especially the morning runs!! And we also got to go with the 6th and 7th form Geography classes to 'Tongariro National Park' in June, freezing cold, but awesome fun!!

We will also remember the ball for the rest of our lives, we had a great night. (but it stopped a little bit early!?! ) A last we just would like to say thanks to the 'Manurewa High School', all our teachers (especially Mr Weeks and Mr Pinto that made us do things we never thought we could do), Miss Briggs for being a very patient and nice form teacher (we were all on her lot), Mrs Taylor {for trying to answer all our confusing questions), Mr Kilgour (our awesome photography teacher), Mr Lamprill (for helping us with our English), Mr Savage (for helping us with the e-mailing), all other staff and all our friends. Chess Club 1997 The Chess Club has followed on from 1996 in a similar fashion to the way which it began over a year and a half ago - with continued enthusiasm from keen players who are both new to the game and experienced, playing both socially and competitively.

Bridget-Anne Brear, Nathaniel Brear, Anna Diack - qualified for the Bronze Award

Duke of Edinburgh's Award This award programme has been quite active in the school this year Sixteen students are participating plus several ex-students, and a group of seniors and ex-students are intending to form a Gold level group for their expeditions. At the end of Term Three three students qualified for their Bronze award.

This meant that they had completed expedition training and two overnight tramps which they organised themselves; three months of regular physical recreation; six months of participating in a skill; and three months of giving some form of service.

Kayak Club In Term 4 this year, a kayak club was started to provide an introduction to kayaking. Fourteen brave souls committed themselves to getting wet, cold and having water up their noses. By the end of term, after ten sessions, they will be able to roll a kayak without 25

capsizing - or that's the theory!

During these sessions they will also learn basic paddle strokes and play games such as canoe polo to improve their skills. Later in the term we are planning to do one or two day / half-day paddles, out in the estuary near Weymouth, and on Waitemata Harbour. We are grateful to Otahuhu College for letting us hire their kayaks, and to Tom Lennie (an ex-student who now manages Stirling Sports in Manurewa) for offering to provide professional instruction.

Outrigger Regatta 1997 This year was the first year Manurewa High School participated in the Auckland Secondary Schools Outrigger competition. We had very few training sessions but the teams were very enthusiastic, and reasonably well-coordinated!

Timing is the key to success with Outrigger paddling and it is quite difficult to get 6 paddles entering and exiting the water in unison.

The regatta was held on April the 5th at Hobson Wharf. Although we failed to place in the top 3, we were awarded the trophy for displaying the best sportsmanship on the day.

The boys' team consisted of Junior Eteru, Jarred Black, Geoffrey Pearse, Raymond Ngawaka, and Nick Connal. The girls' team were Ariana Morunga, Sonia Nepe, Mele Lokeni, Isobelle Tetauru, and Lisha Maynard.

BADMINTON The Manurewa High School entered seven teams into the Counties Manukau secondary schools competition. All games were held at the Papakura Badminton Hall between May and September. There were three participating, other school Pukekohe High, Rosehill College and Papakura High School. The Manurewa High School teams were again very successful this year, winning three out of the four divisions.

Two A grade girls teams were entered, with the Manurewa Gold team captained by Margaret Yetton, winning all of their games and their division. Vuong Tran captained the A grade boys team and also convincingly won their division. The runners up were the Manurewa Green team captained

by Albert Lee. All of the A grade teams showed great commitment and sportsmanship throughout the season.

Three teams were entered into the B grade competition, notably the girls B2 team captained by Dung Trinh which made an outstanding All players showed a effort. marked improvement in their performance during the year with the girls B2 team winning their division. The B3 girls team and the B2 boys team, although not placing, showed a real enthusiasm for this sport and were a credit to the school.

On the third of July, our school entered a one-off competition where the top players from all schools compete within

their region for the National final.

The competition was intense and overall our school came a close second in the Manukau region against top Counties and New Zealand rep players from Rosehill College.

Overall a very successful and enjoyable year. Congratulations to all players and reserves. A special thanks to Ting-kwan for being available at a moments notice to play as a reserve when needed and to Vivian, Vuong and Jeremy for all of your help during the year.

GIRLS HOCKEY As a person who avoids exercise like the plague, I joined the spectacular, wonderful, superb, talented, and excited, Manurewa High School Girls Hockey Team for the first time. Not knowing quite what I was doing, I just followed the rest of the team, pretending I was an experienced player. We walked out onto the turf with an ice-cold breeze up our SHORT skirts and warmed up (pre game) passing balls around with vigour, whacking them at Angela (our goalie), and trying to lure the opposition into a false sense of security by missing a few occasionally. By the end of the game I'd look over at the coach her hands over her eye and shaking her head - and I knew that some of us didn't have a clue. As the season progressed, so did the teams skills and performance (especially after 7 am practices).

And surprise, surprise, by the end of the competition and a season filled with laughs, we came in

The Spirit of Adventure

but it was great to be up there and just view out over the whole Great Barrier.

I was privileged to go out sailing on the 'Spirit of New Zealand' in July this year. I was out for ten days with forty other students that were between fifteen and nineteen years old, but most of us were sixth and seventh formers. It was both boys and girls from all parts of New Zealand. The great thing was that no one knew each other, because we were all selected from different s chools.

Most things we did was quite fun, but something that we didn't enjoy, until afterwards, was the early morning swims.

Imagine yourself to go up half past six every morning and jump into ten degrees water, when it still is dark, not always so fun. It was more fun to swim during the days when we often had dolphins swimming around the ship. It was fantastic to hang over the railing and watch the dolphins play around the ship.

They used to follow the ship for hours when we were sailing.

The purpose of the voyage is youth development, that means to increase the individuals self confidence and to let you do things that you never thought you acould do.

The first days the crew teach you to set the sails, sail the ship and navigate. And the longer the time goes you will get to sail the ship yourselves.

You will get a great feeling of how it is to sail a big ship, not only to put the heavy sails up, but also to :limb up in the topmast when it's windy to hoist the sails or to go up our o'clock in the morning for a two hours nightwatch. tly trip started in Auckland.

When everyone had arrived and found their way around the ship, Are got introduced to each other and all the crew members. We also got to put the life harnesses on and climb up in the mast. It was a peat feeling to be up there and view out over Auckland City.

The first day we sailed to Browns Bay, and the following days we ent to Kawau Island, Mahurangi ay, Great Barrier Island and l maha Bay. The last night we ere anchored outside Auckland arbour just close to the harbour ridge.

We all slept in our sleeping bags on deck under the stars.

The wind wasn't very good when I was out so we stayed a couple of lays on the Great Barrier Island. stead we got to sail some smaller boats and one day we tramped up bunt Hobson. I think we walked or four hours and the last bit was eight hundred steps. I have never aad so sore legs in my whole life,

Something that I learned was teamwork, we were divided into four groups, and every day each group were responsible for one sail station, and everyone also got to be the team leader one day. It was quite difficult, but it felt good when the day was over. Most people had never been a leader before, so it was very different to tell other people what to do, when you usually have your mum or teacher telling you what to do.

When the sailing was done for the day you could just sit around on deck and relax in the sun and talk to all the other people. I thought it would take ages to learn all the peoples's names, but after a couple of days it feels like you have known them for years.

After dinner there were always something to do, most of the time we had some crazy activity or games. But we also tried night sailing and one night we came close to the other ship, 'Spirit of Adventure,' and we had a huge water fight, that was great because my ship won!

In the end of the voyage you get to sit a test that show that you have learned how to sail and navigate.

It wasn't difficult at all and it can hopefully be quite good to put in to the CV. You also get a diploma and a membership of the "Voyager's Club", which means that you can go out and sail again as a leading hand, if you want to, and it's for free.

I would highly recommend you to go out on this sailing, if you get an opportunity to do so, especially if 27

Kayaking Club This year the kayaking club went well considering only two people were involved initially. The main events were the Secondary School Nationals at Hawea and the Nationals at Queenstown.

After travelling down we met all our slalom friends who we see only twice a year and had fun time catching up on their lives. The racing was good, and the water was surprisingly warm for the South Island. This event was hosted by Mount Aspiring College and they provided a great prizegiving with the majority of people winning the highly valuable 'chocolate fish'. I came in 3rd in the Downriver race and Wayne Pretty won his division., and in the slalom I came 4th in Senior boys and Wayne came 3rd in Junior boys. Overall we were the 9th school team which was excellent considering we only had two people competing compared to some teams which had 20 in them.

We then travelled further south to Queenstown for the National Championships to be held on the Roaring Meg River. This river scared off a lot of the less experienced paddlers. It included on rapid named MAN-EATER, but contrary to what the name suggests it wasn't sexist and ate a few women during the weekend.

Surprisingly the Easter Bunny managed to find us so far away from home, so a few of the people racing had some sore stomachs.

The racing was tough as most people were trying harder to survive than go fast. The river claimed a few casualties and sent one of the Aussies home with half a paddle and a boat to repair. The results were never officially published for this race so no-one knows how well they went. At the prize-giving I got lucky and managed to win a brand new canoe ($1200) which was the major spot prize.

At the North Island Nationals held near Tauranga, Wayne and I both managed to show or skill on the Wairoa River and won the Junior Boys and Senior Boys respectively.

A rapid race was the next event in which two people would start together, and the loser would

eliminated. This ended with me narrowly beating Wayne in the finals to get first and second place between us.

Towards the end of this year a Canoeing club was set up at School

by Mrs Dobric, for recreational paddling, and this should prove to be very enjoyable with some fun ti mes had by all. So if you have an interest in canoeing or kayaking see her next year.

Touch Rugby The Senior Girls Touch Team had an extremely successful season this year. This was the first time that the MHS had entered a team in the Secondary Schools competition.

After winning the Counties/Manukau zone competition, the girls went on to compete in the Auckland Secondary Schools Tournament.

The team was unbeaten throughout the tournament, and went on to face their old rivals, Papakura High School, in the finals.

And they won, in a closely fought match! This qualified the team to represent Auckland at the two day National Secondary Schools Touch Tournament at Wanganui. With only nine players, two of whom were nursing injuries, the girls played well throughout the two days. They easily qualified for the finals, which they won convincingly against Nelson College for Girls - giving MHS Senior Girls the title of

Special Congratulations go to Emma Wallace who gained second place in the Junior Girls 3000m.

This was only the second time Emma had competed at this distance making the result extra pleasing.

A number of our students were selected to represent the Manukau Region at this competition which was held in Wellington. The team travelled by coach and were billeted for two nights by students from the Wellington area. This competition is the second largest athletic event at secondary school level. All regions from throughout the North Island are represented resulting in a high level of competition.

GIRLS SOCCER 1997 We started in the summer, under the blazing sun and on rock hard grounds. Round and round we ran.

Warm-ups, sprints, shuttles, situps, burpees - the list goes on and we had barely touched a soccer ball. Fitness training she called it. Our esteemed coach (and her sidekick). It was going to be a long season.

Two squads emerged from it all blistered but not beaten - ready to take the field with pride. A practice game against The Teachers to get the season going.

We took the field as a team and out they came - fired up and ready to bowl us over. They towered above us , they had size 11 feet and their tackling skills should've seen more than one being shown the red card.

However, we fought back - our coach told us bony is best - use your elbows, go in hard and take no prisoners. We did, we scored and we lost but its playing the game that counts.

The season started with a hiss and a roar, We played in mud, rain, the bitterly cold winds and we emerged, more often than not, victorious. The local derby against James Cook High School was a thriller and not without incident (eh coach?). We played as a team and it all came together. The most satisfying win.

The second eleven, it has to be said, had some outstanding games.

Miss Makin was there every game, screaming on the sidelines. 'Don't bunch! !' was the most common cry, Third in Counties Manukau B Grade - 1998 looks a promising year.

Training will start early in 1998 and fundraising will too. Manurewa High School aim to have a team at the Nationals. So to all you would be soccer players out there, kick a soccer ball around the beach this summer and try out for the 1998 squad as soon as the school year starts.

Volleyball There was a significant change in playing personnel at the beginning of the 1997 season due to the fact that six members of last year's successful senior girls' team had left school - they had been National Division II winners.

This year's team struggled to achieve consistency early in the season and although they won the Counties title, pressure was on the team to compete successfully at the Auckland Championships and finish in the top three, thereby qualifying for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Division I Tournament.

At the Auckland finals we lost to Auckland Girls and were pushed into third place by a narrow loss to Wesley College - but we had made Division I!!

Under the leadership of Leilesha Davis, the girls played inspired volleyball at Nationals, defeating high-ranking teams to Western Heights, Kawerau College and

Riccarton High School, themselves up for a berth.

Pro Design Manurewa High Schools Young Enterprise Company 1997 Pro Design got off to a bumpy start but then started to make good progress. Village 8 supplied us with discounted movie passes that allowed us to pay the companies registration fee, however any further revenue was stopped as they decided no more movie tickets could be sold. The Company had to rely on the sale of our main product tithe tool holder'. We launched the tool holders at the Young Enterprise Trade fair held at the Pakuranga Plaza, they were well received by the public and quickly sold. This raised the morale of the company and proved the point that team stands for Together Everyone Achieves More! The Pro Design team worked steadily producing the second batch of tool holders and the staff were quick to buy up most of these. At the time of writing this we cannot report on the profitability of the company but the experience that we have all gained through running the business, has been extremely worthwhile. We would like to thank Mr Brian Lane for his idea, help and support and the use of the workshop, without which none of this would of been possible.

Geographers out in the field??

After two postponements due to uncontrollable weather (most unlike the Geography Department) the annual Coal Mining / Dairy Farm Field Trip finally happened!!

One hundred and twenty students piled onto four buses (nb. apologies to Miss Cox's class who got the dunger bus - it shall never happen again) and ventured out into geographical space to confront 'RESOURCES'.

The first stop was at the Rotowaro Coal Field in Huntly.

Keen geographers were taken on a tour of the mines and were able to see, smell, and hear the things that teachers had been explaining for the last ten weeks making it all rather real and exciting. Some lucky individuals got to see (not play with) explosives at work as the workmen dynamited a coal face.

If explosives didn't excite them, the next stop surely did!

Mr Reeves kindly showed the students around his Dairy Farm in Karaka. With their usual good timing, the Geographers managed to arrive exactly as a cow was Sixty students were calving. engrossed (or grossed out) watching Mr Reeves chasing a cow around the paddock holding onto the legs of a calf (still sticking out of the back of the cow) and trying to aid the birth.

All of this was skillfully caught on video by Mrs Dobric. Everyone applauded when, at last, the tiny calf was born but no-one was willing to go a step further, and shake the farmers hand!!!

Walking around the farm, drawing sketches, questioning, and sticking fingers into calves mouths to suckle (and goober) on was enough to fill in the rest of the day.

One hundred and twenty students (and four exhausted teachers) arrived back at The Manurewa High School (just before the bell as promised) having had a very eventful and successful field trip.

On the seventh day they rested -and on the seventh night they froze.

What could possibly justify a six hour bus trip with forty rowdy MHS students, each close to needing medical attention for glucose overdoses. A trip to Disneyland perhaps? An excursion to the Gold Coast perchance? NO, all it took was the prospect of spending their weekend in a freezing cold, extremely hostile mountainous location courtesy of the sadistic Geo wardens Miss.

Briggs, Mr. Bargh, Mr. & Mrs. Dobric, Mr. Pinto and Miss Cox. Technically we were staying at the Whakapapa motor Lodge, a stones throw away from the Ruapehu skifield, but that doesn't really count.

"It's all in the name of Geography", they said.

You won't get hypothermia that badly", they said.

The tramps aren't that long", they said.

And they were right for once.

So, on the weekend of the 6-8th of June the Geonuts and friends of MHS did venture to Tongariro National Park, staying at the foot of Mt. Ruapehu, an active volcano, but who cares?

Well, we were 350 km from Auckland, 360 km from Wellington, and Mt. Taranaki could be seen in the distance, we were in the centre of the Nth Island and in the middle of the WOPS again.

We enjoyed a fun packed itinerary, early morning breakfasts, late night dinners and all day tramps in the ice. Such is the life of a Geographer. Absolutely no frolicking or immature acts here.

Except for an hour or so of snow/ice based warfare. Which is classed in the syllabus as military tactics and hand-eye-snow-butt coordination. I would like to personally apologize to those students and teachers who were on the receiving end of some of my snow projectiles, I am truly sorry they failed to knock any sense into you.

I would now like to focus on a few individuals whose actions require additional mention. Firstly, Cohn and James, well, well, well, thats all I need to say. Secondly, Room 19 lasses, didn't your mothers teach you not to hold parties in your bedroom? (and I did not say anything at all to you lot late on the last night) 32

GeoEd 97 Waikato University During the first school holidays when everybody was still holidaying and catching the last of the summer sun, the intrepid geographers set themselves for another new experience. Mr Van Kralingen, Miss Briggs, Mrs Dobric and Miss Cox migrated through the infamous Waikato fogs to GeoEd 97, the national conference of Geographers for the uninitiated.

It was held in the new lecture theatres at Waikato University and proved to be a thoroughly stimulating and enjoyable four days. There were wall to wall from Britain, geographers Australia, South Africa and from throughout New Zealand.

Each intensive day was divided into workshops, lectures, plenary sessions or fieldwork. It was wonderful to meet with other teachers and to compare ideas and strategies. On the penultimate day of the Conference The Manurewa Geography High School Department presented a paper on fluvial geography fieldwork (what a river does to the natural environment). It was very well received and we were asked to publish it and make it available for use at other schools. The conference dinner was an enjoyable affair with excellent culinary treats and a memorable key note speaker.

Rose attracted some considerable interest with her antics around a fine glass of Rongopai chardonnay.

It was at this moment her thoughts strayed to her mysterious secret admirer. She spent much of the next day in Miss Cox's bag in a dark, cool place overcoming the over of her after-effects indulgence. The fieldwork involved a trip to the Waitomo Caves and other local spots of interest. Rose's absence was noted by all. We all benefited greatly from the four days and would thoroughly recommend the experience of attending a national conference to anyone.

HUNUA HILLS Here they were. Bursting with energy, full of enthusiasm, faces freshly scrubbed and shining, ready to learn. Eagerly they leapt onto the bus and laughingly jostled each other for window seats ( no-one wanted to miss a single moment of this great adventure.)

The noise increased to a crescendo as the vehicle ponderously lumbered down the driveway, groaning under the weight of several tonnes of food and equipment. These geonuts settled to a happy burble as we headed for the exotic and mysterious Waharau.Surely all those horror stories told by older geonuts could not be true, you know what these Yr 13 people can be like. Little did they know what lay in wait for them, the teachers sat back quietly and smiled in anticipation. " What?!1!1" was the collective scream. " You can't be serious.

This is it?" "Oh yes" chortled the teachers under their breath." This is the infamous Alcatraz OOPS sorry Waharau and here you will remain - at least until you complete the field work that is " Still muttering about no TV!, no Macdonalds! and no swimming pool !, they wandered off disconsolat ely. Face s fell even further when the weighty tome of the Field Work Report was placed before them. "Do all this in 3 days you must be iokina. No way." With

much obvious delight the Warders ( teachers) soothed the distressed students with "You'll thank us for this later when you are doing tertiary studies"," It hurts us more than it hurts you" and "Just wait until you taste the superb cuisine" Time passed, too much for some people and not enough for others.

Hills were climbed ( eventually) for geonuts, some of them didn't have that great a sense of direction, raging torrents were forded ( well maybe this is a slight exaggeration), dense jungle full of blood sucking insects was crashed through Indiana Jones style, and students discovered parts of their brains they didn't even know they had, as words showing great intelligence and amazing geographic insight poured onto the pages of their reports.( another " slight exaggeration" perhaps) Lollie scrambles, food that was plentiful, nutritious and even tasty ( surprise, surprise), and gallons of coffee later the exhausted inmates crawled, staggered or sleepwalked their way toward the conveyance that would deliver them back to reality.Would anyone believe them when they told their tale of woe? It had been a crazy, insane time and one day they would look back on it all and laugh. It was true after all Teachers don't get mad, they get even!

Geography/History CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP Easter was early this year, so we began our 1997 programme with frantic preparation for the Easter Assemblies. Andrea Bates, Anna Murphy and Asher Finlayson put on great performances as angels and "secret agent angels" while the rest of the group played a variety of supporting roles. Then it was into a rather less hectic Term 2, and in Term 3 we scripted, rehearsed and performed an updated version of the parable of the Prodigal Son. Again there were memorable performances from a great range of talented Christian Fellowshippers who seemed to know more about casino routines than one would expect from under-20 year old Christians! Asher played a convincing "Beausy", Kylie Wapp his hysterical mother, Ani Ruawhare his flowery sister, Amy Hughes the girlfriend, and Caleb Patterson the guy who takes the money and the girl. We had a lot of fun doing this production and the assemblies got a lot of laughs.

Thanks to the many who assisted both on and off stage. Special thanks to Miss Clarke, Mrs Johnstone and our school chaplain, Jergun, who helped us put it all together. Now we have to work on Easter 1998.

HISTORY TRIPS "Scars on the Heart" at the Auckland War Memorial Museum has given historians a great resource for studies in the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s, the World Wars of this century, and the Vietnam War. So on a wet February Day (thank goodness this "field work" was not done in a "field") the entire history department went in three buses to the museum for an afternoon of research. On the way to the city there was a loud "bang" from under one of the buses. Urban terrorism? Anyway, we reached the museum in one piece. There the 100 or so eager students rushing round with

After examining battlefields, watching videos, using touch-screen computers and looking at war relics, we all finished the tasksheets. So it was back to the pouring rain outside, where we felt sorry for the bus drivers who had spent the last 2 hours changing a blown-out tyre.

That day we learned a lot about war, and decided it would not be cool to be a bus driver after all.

A few weeks later, the Year 13s spent a day touring sites associated with the Waikato War. Again, there was diligent note-taking - on tables in the dining room of the Rangiriri Hotel and on top of a wall at the Ragiriri cemetery.

Finally, the Year 11s spent a day looking at Auckland's defenses, including taking a tour over the frigate "Waikato" .

GEO QUIZ Several talented year 11 geography students sacrificed many a lunchtime to compete for a position to represent the school in the prestigious annual "GEO QUIZ".

Classics English trip to Oedipus and Antigone.

We the brave the mighty and the wise" (Wordsworth) left The Manurewa High School on a cold winter night to attend a performance of Antigone and Oedipus at Unitech. On the journey we managed to take the wrong turning , arriving late for the performance. Over sixty attended this cultural event ably supported by various staff members. The seats were uncomfortable , but the drama was superb. Oedipus a play on the downfall of a wise King and Antigone a view of tyranny provided stimulating discussions on the return to the classroom.One must always be aware of modern technology , for at the climax of Antigone a loud ringing sound eminated over the cavea. Kasmira had left her cell telephone on.

Miss Washer was especially thanked for organisation of this event.

Visit to Cartoon of Heracles

During the last week of term three the senior classics class visited the local cinema to view the latest Walt Disney classic Hercules. Was it accurate or was is not ? The universal opinion was it was not but was an example of how classical myths are still used today as part of story telling.

Classical Studies Art History Camp 'I ask the Gods for relief of these labours , this watch from years end to years end' (Aeschylus- Agamemnon ) If the above quote was anything to go by then the Classics / Art History camp of 1997 was one of the largest and exhausting ever taken by the Manurewa High School. Hours of preparation by the staff , the usual complaints by some students " Its our weekend " or "are we required to work" culminated in a successful weekend of enlightenment .

Cross -curricular studies require that two departments combine their resources , expertise and interests in order to provide the students with a basis for the art history component of both subjects.

And then there were the big scary green moths. There was no escape from them as they seemed to follow one around the room as if they could sense the fear. But luckily the Hercules of the senior school managed with his superior strength to capture the mighty beast and dispose of it outside.

Drama 1997: A year of continued growth in this department saw the addition of a new Year 12 Drama class with a total of 46 students taking the subject at this level. A new drama teacher also arrived, Miss Samantha White, originating from Perth, Australia.

Year 12 Drama classes have had a busy and fruitful year with a high standard of performance work being presented. Early highlights were the adaptation of Macbeth presented to the entirety of Year 12 and a pantomime performed at Hillpark Primary School which the children were very enthusiastic about. Later the focus turned to scripted dramas with demanding performances of The Warrior Virgin, a play based on Joan of Arc's life and Women of Troy, a classical Greek tragedy.

Junior Drama classes have also had fun whilst being productive. This will culminate in an end of year festival involving the four Year 10 classes.

In the words of a very wise student, "Drama is choice", and 1997 has been one of the choicest years.

Joining Dorothy and her three friends, the scarecrow, the Unman and the cowardly lion, audiences in The Manurewa High School hall were taken on a quest through Munchkinland to see "the Great This fun and colourful 0z". musical fantasy was performed on 28th July to the 2nd August to appreciative audiences which built to full houses.

There were strong lead performances from Sydneyr e Ila Singsam (Dorothy), Steven Wood (The Scarecrow), Scott Crickett (The Tinman), David Palelei (The Cowardly lion), Nicole Klink (The Wicked Witch of the West), Helen Silbey (Glynda) and Andrea Bates (Gloria).

These were complemented by a talented and enthusiastic chorus and an outstanding group of Munchkins from Manurewa Central Primary School whose singing and movement were an undoubted highlight.

The orchestra was almost completely comprised of The Manurewa High School students, many of them juniors, and was expertly lead by WooSung Kang on piano. Their playing was of a professional standard and strongly supported the stage performance and singing.

The performance could not have been achieved without much hard work from staff and pupils.

Beginning with rehearsals months in advance and continuing through costume, make-up, set. backdrop props, front- of- ho us e , lighting, sound and a host of other jobs. The production was a team effort by all and the students involved are particularly thankful to the staff who gave their time, talents, efforts and stress to achieve a highly successful performance.

It was a happy show and as the Tinman says: 'Happiness is just about the best thing in the whole world'

Concert Band 1997 The Manurewa High School Concert Band under the able leadership of Mr Weeks has gone from strength to strength this year with the addition of some new members and new instrument (Bass Guitar and French Horn). The Concert Band now sounds really professional. This change however has not been an overnight one.

With rehearsals from 8am until 8.50 am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays there hasn't been time for deterioration. This isn't mentioning the numerous sectionals and night rehearsals.

professional manner right to be on the toi that 1998 brings improvement for Concert Band.

Over this year, The Concert Band repertoire has probably trebled and includes favourites "Shake, Rattle and Roll", "City Slickers" and a Glenn Miller medley. One of the highlights of the year was winning a Gold Award in the Auckland Schools' Concert Band Festival. Only three schools in Auckland won a Gold Award and our school was one of these.

This year the Manurewa High School Choir has had a very successful year. At the beginning of the year the choir performed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Choral Festival and were asked to be national finalists in Hawkes Bay. They decided instead to go to Samoa to compete in the Teuila Tourism Festival. The choir was placed first overall in the church choir competition. They came first in the compulsory song 'Pesi 0 Teuila' and came second in their eown choice' which was And the Glory' by Handel.

Perhaps the most exciting event to happen in our school this year was the Western Samoan tour of the Choir and Concert Band. This was an excellent trip, enjoyed by all who participated. All of the hard work in fundraising and preparation paid off and the 99 students were able to tour Samoa.

Many of the students had never been to Samoa before and for some it was their first look at their homeland.

The choir has had a really exciting time during the year and an enjoyable time in Samoa. Thank you to Mr Weeks and all the staff and the people who helped work with the choir making the year a success.

Heavenly Angels

Many things were different, including the buses. Made of wood, they were classic. The windows were made of coloured plastic and had three positions up, down and jammed. But it was the fuel gauges that worried me.

They always read empty.

Driving around the islands was an experience and a half. Every person you passed would stop what they were doing and wave.

Most of the dwelling places had no walls and those that did were lucky if they had windows.

However in such heat the last thing you wanted were walls. Pigs wandered aimlessly around except at dinner time when they strangely seemed to disappear.

The hospitality of the people was the thing that amazed me, and many others. One family donated 100 loaves of bread and a pig to help feed our party. The friendliness of the Samoan people was also seen. They were eager to get to know us, and always easy to talk to. Perhaps the only thing to watch for is when you're buying things at the local market. 'How much is that fan? you ask.

'Aaah 10 Tale' the stall owner will answer. If you come back ten minutes later with a Samoan friend and the price drops dramatically.

We are very thankful to those at Wesley College who showed us such wonderful hospitality and also to the teachers and parents and all those who contributed in time and effort, especially Mr Weeks and Mr O'Donnell. This trip has been a real learning experience for all the students who took part and will be long remembered.

Special Education THE HOMAI VISUAL RESOURCE ROOM 1997 This year the Homai Resource Room has supported 20 students with visual impairment. Seven of these students are Braille users.

They use a Braille machine for note-taking in some classes, especially in Mathematics, but most visually impaired students now use laptop computers with voice synthesizers. Classroom teachers can see their work on the computer screen and the students can listen to their notes and make print and Braille copies of it in the Resource Room. The other students use a variety of aids to help with reading such as large print copies, magnifiers, and close circuit television.

This year the Manukau Rotary Club donated a laser printer and

embosser machine which produces Braille with the text in print above each line. This saves time for the student and allows non-Braille readers to read a students work.

The students and staff of the Resource Room are very grateful to the Manukau Rotary Club and their 1996-97 president, Mr Hornblow, for this very generous gift.

Zealand Radio transmitters Association , the national body of amateur radio.

The objective of the Resource Room is to provide ongoing support for students in all areas to enable them to achieve their full potential within The Manurewa High School.

Resource Room students have also been involved in many co-curricular activities this year. Three students, Olitta Tuiloma, Nu'ulelei Skipps and Susan Leota went to Samoa with the school choir. They all enjoyed the opportunity to become more closely involved with their Samoan heritage.

Technology Information Technology The Manurewa High School Board of Trustees have been very supportive in providing and promoting Information Technology in the school. To meet the growing demand for access to computers by all subject areas, one more suite of 32 computers was added this year, along with a pod of 8 computers in the new Science bock and 8 new machines to various departments around the school. This brings the total computers to over 320 and 20 laptops, an excellent ratio of 51/2 students per computer. These changes have enabled all students to use Windows with Microsoft Works, Publisher or Office applications along with the large variety of other educational software.

Multimedia software such as Encarta, World Book, Britannica, Bookshelf, the New Zealand Encyclopedia and others are available where needed by students across the 220 computer Novell network and on the stand alone computers in the library and classrooms. Access to The Internet is also provided across the network. E-mail is now available to Staff and Administration, designated students such as exchange and correspondence students. These modern research tools are proving invaluable along side the Library resources. There is also a large variety of educational software that present concepts, model or simulate real life situations, provide extension or reinforcement to teaching and enable students to revise or test their knowledge.

The introduction of pods of 6-12 computers in a number of departments is proving very practical. Pods are located centrally in the Science, Mathematics, Technology, LAD and Experience departments. These enable students to access computers at any time as needed from any class.

What's in A Brief?

It's new!

The New Zealand Technology Curriculum which has been implemented here in our school and which becomes compulsory for all schools in the Year 1999 It has brought some exciting challenges this year. A new compulsory Year 9 subject has been introduced, Materials Design Technology.

Every Year 9 student has had four terms of technology. Each term students have been presented them with new challenges and hopefully new skills. The course is structured so that four areas or different materials are experienced. Graphics, Fabrics, Metal and Wood. As you read you may think, but I did those! The difference is in the brief!!

What is a design brief? Basically it is a problem to be solved which has no one correct answer. This is exciting for students because this means that the answer can be individual and still fulfill the brief.

Each term the design brief has been the saml for all areas. So it didn't matter what material you were using.

Term 1 - In the Picture - looked at designing and making picture frames - a whole range of solutions were designed - including Fimo, wood, plastics and metal frames.

Term 2 - Move Along - required the students to design and make a moving toy - as you can imagine the results were very multifaceted

- kites, mobiles, wooden trucks and cars, metal wind propelled toys.... the list goes on!

Term 3 - Performing Puppets - by far the most challenging and rewarding brief of the year ( for the teachers too!) The brief asked the student to design a clay head and then the student had a choice of body material and what sort of form the puppet took. To finalise this brief some of the puppets even performed!

Term 4 - Wear It - students were asked to consider cultural and society issues in their approach when designing an original piece of jewelry.

Again a range of materials were available to the students and many wonderful pieces were produced.

It might sound easy, just make something, but considerable time is spent in the design work. It is here that lays the challenge. To be given a pattern or a design to follow is easy but to truly design something of your own takes lots of energy and planning.

It has been hard work for teacher and student alike but it has been fun too!

We look forward to next year when MDT, as we affectionately call it, takes hold of the next generation of Year 9's to challenge.

HUMAN RESOURCES It has been a busy and exciting year especially for the staff working in the Careers area. A large number of students in the school have taken advantage of the many opportunities available to them in the employment, continuing education and training areas. These have included:

The Electronics ITO organised a day for all senior girls who took Maths and Science subjects to participate in a hands-on programme to outline what is involved in an Electronics Career.

Visiting liaison officers from Polytechnics various and Universities who have provided upto-date information on courses and entry criteria.

Both Year 12 Life Skills classes attended the Youth Skills Expo where they observed demonstrations in the trades related areas.

YEAR 12/13 CAREER MODULES

Students were involved in Architecture, Performing Arts, Trades, Radio and TV, Veterinary Nursing and Horticulture.

This year all senior students were involved in investigating career options. This entailed completing a personal careers profile followed by a curriculum vitae.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Students investigated Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Business Studies, Tourism, and Hotel Management Courses.

We have been fortunate to have gained seven $1,000 scholarships for students who will be studying full-time at Manukau Polytechnic in 1998. Numerous Scholarships were offered by various organisations and these were publicised and distributed to all Year 12 and 13 classes.

NAVY UNIT The mobile display unit was in the school for the day and all Year 10 students were timetabled to see this.

AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY To encourage girls to enter Engineering, Enginuity Day was organised for interested senior Several students also students. attended the Maori and Pacific Island Career Planning day.

CAREERS ROOM Is open every lunchtime, equipped with the most up-to-date literature and will be on the internet in 1998.

Various computer software programmes are available for use on the three computers in the room. A video library is also available. All students are encouraged to use the Career Room facilities.

Community Education.

This year 1175 adults have taken advantage 74 Community Education classes offered in the evenings. These take advantage of the excellent computer and other facilities at The Manurewa High School.

Courses such as Introduction to Computers, Word Processing or Spreadsheets run each night and (Monday, Tuesday Wednesday) and meet the needs of new computer users. They are always fully subscribed. These lead to intermediate courses that teach more advanced skills. Other computer courses are Operate a Personal Computer, Keyboard Skills and Desktop Publishing using MS Publisher - an excellent package for creating newsletters, flyers, brochures, cards etc.

Students are enjoying the great variety of other courses offered.

Courses such as Landscape Cooking class es gardening, (Vegetarian, Indian, Thai and Middle Eastern), Red Cross First Aid, Landscape Design and Wood Turning. There are a number of other full year courses such as Maori Language, Badminton, Line Dancing, School Certificate Mathematics, SC English, SC/Pitmans Typing and Sewing.

The Defensive Driving course, at the start of each term is very popular for the younger adults. It helps improve your driving skills and meets the Ministry of Transports requirements for a 50% reduction on a "Restricted" licence.

Next year will see the introduction of Accounting for Small Businesses and Accounting for Non-profit These will be Organisations. followed up with computer accounting using MYOB and Excel.

Some of the other new courses will be Introduction to The Internet, Yoga and Weight Release Strategies.

The Manurewa High School PTA The Manurewa High School PTA has had an active year in 1997. It has supported the school with funding for out of school sports and cultural trips and helped sponsor students with overseas trips of Pal ca tinnal value.

To enable it to carry out this sponsorship we have been carried out a number of fundraising activities through the year. These have been enjoyable for those members of the PTA who have taken part in them as well as providing a great deal of satisfaction in supporting the school and their children. The willing band of parents who have been the mainstay of the PTA, do need more parents willing to assist, as over the last few years, the number of parents leaving the PTA as their children leave school, has exceeded those joining. Any parents who wish to assist and become active in the PTA should contact the school to be given advice of meeting times and other ways in which they can help.

In addition to fundraising activities, the PTA has organised a number of information evenings about the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, Unit Standards, the Curriculum and also about the ways we as parents can help and assist our children with their involvement with the Science Fair and their Science Projects. It was gratifying indeed to see how many children of PTA members who had attended that particular meeting were seen later in the year bringing their projects into the School Hall in August having being chosen as one of the best twenty projects from The Manurewa High School.

The Committee of the PTA join with me to wish all students and their families, their best wishes for the festive season and especially to those leaving school this year with their future careers.

Woo•sug Kang This year's recipient is : Woo-sug is one of the most outstanding pianists to attend The Manurewa High School. He has contributed in many ways to music within the school. He is a solo performer on the school CD and for the past two years has been the pianist in the school orchestra as the backing for the school musicals - Grease and The Wizard of Oz. His commitment and loyalty has been an inspiration for other music students within the school.

Musician of the Year The three finalists are : Woo•Sug Kang Alapeta Baas Alapeta gave a stunning performance as 'Bloody Mary' Olitta Tuiloma in the school production of South Pacific. She has Olitta has been an asset to the Music Department. performed solo items in concerts with the choir, both During her time in school she has supported the choir, nationally and internationally. She has also performed accompanied soloists which has required a great deal on national television. She also contributed as a solo of commitment and versatility of her part. Olitta has performer on the school CD which has sold over 2000 also featured as an accompanist on television and also copies. She is also a founder member of the pop group features on the successful school CD. Y For Life and SHA DIVA which has appeared in the Rockquest Regional Finals.

GOTTA DANCE 1997!

Cultural Council 1997

Dance has continued to flourish at MHS with three groups of talented dancers this year. The year 9 and 10 group, a promising group of very able dancers performed along with the senior group, at the Auckland Schools Dance Festival held at Auckland Girls Grammar. This proved to be a rewarding learning experience for the girls, and it was positive to see their professional attitudes, and the increased participation of schools in these non-competitive performances.

The main purpose of the cultural council is to provide support for the many cultural and social activities undertaken by staff and students.

Our most important functions this year were in terms two and three and included the open evening for in-coming pupils and their parents , the concerts, the Wizard of Oz and the farewell evening for the Samoa trip.

At our inaugural meeting on March 13, office bearers were elected, Craig Montgomery was our chairperson, Garth Bankier and Nicholas Collis our deputies.

Simone Woolgar and Chantelle Phillips were joint secretaries. On the steering committee were: Jo Parlane , Jessica Valkenborg, Bridget Anne Freer, Helen Silby, Andrea Danks, Angela Elwin, Ramona Pei and Abby Tipene. We welcomed new members from year twelve and thirteen.

Dance was further promoted this year through the Talent Quest.

Our third group, under the guidance of Ruth Howard Year 12, choreographed a dance for this, and many in this group had never danced in this capacity before.

Outstanding talent has also been revealed through the moves and funky coordination of Hung Lam and his brother Tommy, who were awarded a top place in the talent quest and went on to win the dance section of the Manukau Arts Festival. Hopefully we will see more from this dynamic duo in the future!

The cultural council gratefully acknowledges the tremendous support received from several staff members: Mrs Taylor, Miss Paterson, Mrs Lal, Miss Thomas, Miss Briggs and Miss Gallot, the teacher-in-charge.
