MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY

Principal's Message 1995 has been a significant year for The Manurewa High School. A major decision by the Board of Trustees to increase the size of the school to 1850 brings with it a long term development plan for our school. The pressure for enrolments means each year that increasing numbers of students are declined places at our school. To cater for the demand for places at our school, planning for a building programme has commenced. A brief outline of the development is as follows: building of a new permanent single level science block with 12 laboratories, associated resource and storage areas, toilet facilities and other general teaching facilities, conversion of 11 existing teaching spaces to alternative uses, i.e. conversion of existing science laboratories to general classrooms and technology spaces, relocating existing prefabs to other areas of the school or off-site to provide a clear building site for the science block, upgrading the administration, staffroom and student facilities by converting existing facilities, or by providing an additional building or spaces, creating a new major linking walkway through the school, general site upgrade and rehabilitation work. The project is due to commence in April of next year. To cope with the increased roll growth, the new qualifications framework and the introduction of new subjects, a new management structure will be put in place for 1996. This will include the appointment of staff to the position of Faculty Heads or Managers in charge of each of the seven essential learning areas. This should assist in communication and the dissemination of information and feedback within the school.

results continue to be outstanding. For example this year two students out of four from the entire Auckland area were chosen to represent the school at the National Science Fair. This year has been a particularly strong year for cultural excellence. The Drama Stage Challenge group won the Auckland Section of the Smokefree Stage Challenge, as well as the Best Overall School, Best Set Design & Staging, Best Soundtrack, Best Lighting Design, Best Costume Design, Best Choreography, and Most Entertaining. Our school choir, under the leadership of Mr N Weeks, HOD Music, gained representation to the National Finals where they received a Gold Award for their rendition of the "Hallelujah Chorus" and a Bronze Award for "0' Happy Day". One of the highlights during the year was a visit to our school by the Minister of Education, Doctor The Honourable Lockwood Smith. The Minister spoke to members of the Board of Trustees and senior staff and was taken on a brief tour of some of our facilities. He was most impressed by what he saw and spoke of the tremendous reputation that our school had nationwide. The workload on teaching staff continues to increase to the point where questions must be asked about the workload that is

Once again this year our students have excelled in all areas. The school continues to encourage students to enter examinations and academic competitions, and 2

expected of them. The introduction of the new curriculum framework, the trialling of unit standards and the assessment and moderation of these, has placed incredible stress on staff involved. I express major reservations about the future when all staff, in all subject areas will be involved in this process. Nevertheless, I thank most sincerely all staff for their tremendous efforts during the year. Also my thanks to the senior administration staff who continued to lead by example, the Board of Trustees for their leadership and guidance and the PTA for their support. My thanks also to the Magazine Editor, Mrs H Kilgour and particularly Mr R Kilgour for his untiring efforts throughout the year in ensuring that all school activities were captured for publicity purposes and the school magazine. The result is that once again the magazine is an outstanding record of the diversity and wealth of talent in our school. I would also like to acknowledge the leadership of this year's Head Prefects, Marcus and Gabrielle Leslie and the Prefects team. Thank you to all students who have been involved in any way with our school. My best wishes to all students leaving school this year.

Staff Notes At the start of the 1995 school year the following new staff members were welcomed to The Manurewa High School: Miss N Booker, Mathematics, Mr A Hancock, English, Miss C Darden, Learning Adjustment Department, Mr N Wild, Physics & Science. During term one there were a number of staff movements. Mrs S Graham, HOD Drama resigned her position in March to take up an appointment at Kings College. Mr D Macleod left in April to take up an appointment as Deputy Principal at Dargaville High School. Mrs J McVerry, Office Assistant, left to take up a position at Kings College. The following staff were then appointed. Mr G Thorpe, Accounting/Economics, and Mrs D Clarkson, part time Science. Mrs S Impey was appointed HOD Accounting/ Economics and Mrs V McDermott, Assistant to HOD Accounting /Economics. Mr C Alderton was appointed HOD Drama. In recognition of the increasing size and complexity of the school, and the introduction of the National Qualifications framework, Mr Williams was appointed by the Board of Trustees to the position of Deputy Principal. At the end of term one we farewelled four staff members, Mrs Textiles Beth McCrystal, Technology, who resigned for family reasons after 12 years service to the school. Mr M Whickman left on promotion to Head of Maths at Hillary College. Mrs R Chan left on a term's leave of absence and Mrs V Singh left on maternity leave and leave of absence for one year and two terms.

At the commencement of term two the following staff were appointed. Mrs V Sewpershad and Mrs K Singaravelu, Mathematics, Miss V Kelly, Food & Textiles Technology and Miss A Manion, English relieving for one term. Mrs L Johns was appointed to the position of Copy Room Assistant. In June Mrs L King, a long serving teacher aide, left to start up her own business. She was eventually replaced by Mrs R Titford. At mid term Mr D Harvey, HOD Computing left to take up a contract position with the Auckland College of Education as Technology Facilitator, also Miss Makin left to take up a position of Resource Teacher at the Auckland Museum. Mr L Govender and Mr Prasad joined the staff in relieving capacities. Mrs L Waugh joined the staff in Science and Biology.

At the end of term two Miss A 2 Manion left to take up a position at Papatoetoe High School. Mrs R Chan returned at the start of term three to resume teaching duties. During September Mrs J Utting, Office Receptionist left to start up her own business after seven years of service. She was replaced by Mrs C Rust. Q

At the time of writing this report the following staff have either resigned or indicated their intention to leave. Mrs M Turner, to take up a position at Te Kauwhata High School,Mr Grbin to Waiuku, Mrs V Bleaken, maternity leave for 1996, Mr & Mrs Govender to travel to Australia, Mrs L Christie and Miss C Day one year's leave of absence, and Miss P McDougal who completes her relieving position in Art.

Founding Principal's Eightieth Birthday Mr Alex Maich, the foundation principal of Manures High School, was the guest of honour at a speci assembly to mark his eightieth birthday. The chc sang "Happy Birthday" and "Memory", "Play A Simp Melody" and "0 Happy Day". This was a token of tF school's appreciation of Mr Maich's continue generous support of the school's actiyitie , particularly the school choir.

The Manurewa High School Top Scholars Competition. He also gained a distinction in this year's Australasian Mathematics and Science Competition. Matthew is also an ASB Scholar for 1995. His achievements, however, are not all academic.

Matthew Savage is our top student for 1995. He has been awarded the Dux prize, and this is the most prestigious academic award for any secondary school student. The word Dux derives from a Latin word meaning leader, and Matthew has proved to be a leading scholar. He topped all of his classes this year - Chemistry, Geography, Graphics and Design, Mathematics with Statistics and Physics.

In August Matthew went to Wellington where Dame Catherine Tizard presented him with the Boys Brigade Queens Badge. He earned this through community service, participating in leadership courses and proving he could survive by himself for three days on remote Pickersgill Island in the Marlborough Sounds.

Matthew has been an excellent student since the third form. In the third and fourth form he was awarded the West Cup for outstanding effort in the junior School. In 1992 he gained a first in the school Science Fair for his electronic exhibit, a computer interface. Among Matthew's recent achievements is a place in the top one hundred in this year's BNZ Mathematics

Next year Matthew hopes to go to Auckland University and begin a degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. We wish him every success for the future. was an ASB Scholar.

Linda Juang is our Proxime Accessit for 1 995. This prize is given to the student who is in second place, after the Dux. The name of the award is expressed in Latin and means "he came very near."

While study has been a priority for Linda this year, she has still found time to participate in Peer Support, the Choir and the Asian Club she was the President).

Linda comes from Taiwan and has been at The Manurewa High School for four years.

Next year Linda intends to go to Auckland University and study for a Conjoint Degree in Commerce and Property. We wish Linda every success in her university studies.

This year she has studied Accounting, Mathematics with Calculus and Mathematics with Statistics, Physics and Economics. She topped her Economics class, and 8

Visit by the Minister of Education

On Friday 14 July, the Hon. Dr Lockwood Smit Minister of Education, responded to an invitation visit our school. He was invited to witness tf excellence which can be achieved in a sta1 secondary school, in particular, in Technology an Music. The Minister was also shown where th Targeted Funding for Educational Achievement wi being spent, in the Learning Adjustment area an on teaching English as a Second Language. After morning tea in the Library, the Minister wt escorted to the Hall where the Choir sang "Brir Him Home", "Simple Melody", and "Anotht Op'nin', Another Show". Dr Smith was vet impressed with The Manurewa High School an decided it had earned its reputation "The Aucklan Grammar of the Isthmus".

The Port Waikato Attack The Monday we went to the Port Was a fun kind of day of sorts The weather was uncertain and quite cold But seventh form Geo was bold. At eight o'clock we arrived at the school And the morning was considerably cool We couldn't find Peter at all Until we drove past Southmall An hour or so later we arrived The day had become quite warm, what a surprise We knew we should have believed, The forecast Mr Hornblow had received. We started to measure the slope, And the dunes, remarkably coped, With forty seventh formers brave, And two teachers to make us behave. Shane ventured into the sea But polluted it looked to be, The lemons were dumped in the ocean, While we all applied sun lotion. We travelled further up the spit, This activity was making us fit, While the sun gave us all a tan And our shoes were filling up with sand. The lemons were dumped in the sea, But the experiment just wasn't to be, So we continued down the spit Just leaving the teachers to deal with it. Another cross section was done, But our faithful teachers had gone, While Ming began a golf game Shane broke a ruler and took the blame. The golf game continued to grow, But we decided to go, We had a craving for chips and fish So lunch we had better not miss. The local shop got fantastic sales Especially from the errant males We sat down and relaxed for an hour But from the wasps we had to cower. After lunch we scaled the rocks And got blisters if we didn't wear socks, Bets were laid as to who would fall down, Bronwyn and Andrew both hit the ground. We boarded the bus to go home, And amid an almighty groan, Some cows were across the road, So our progress was considerably slowed. After resolving to make the cows mince, The farmer seemed to understand our hints, He moved the truck away, To the cries of our hearty hooray. We sped through the wops in a rush, And over the bus spread a hush, Most had fallen asleep, Except of course for the poet elite. As we finally came down Browns Road, The bus will lighten its load, We shall go home, one by one Now The 1995 Prefects Ball that our Geo trip is done. Survival Kit for NZQA Unit Standards In December of 1994 the Manurewa High School Geography department was selected as one of thirty New Zealand schools to trial the new NZQA Geography Unit standards. While professionally stimulating it proved to be very hard work. I would like to thank the staff and students of the department for their dedication and determination amidst trying circumstances. During the course of the trial we all learnt a great deal about Geography, ourselves, our students and education bureaucracy. We have compiled a short survival kit that all departments will require as they embark on this educational adventure. 5 x boxes of matchsticks (for keeping eyes open) Photos of loved ones (to remind us of home and family) KFC (for meals on the run) 3 x Word Processors (the Unit Standards equivalent of the respirator) I x Laptop and I x cellphone (fashion accessories for those in the educational limelight) Accident Compensation Forms (to cover RSI, premature balding, wrinkle removal etc) Medical Insurance (to cover those inevitable nervous breakdowns, stress attacks and suicidal tendencies) I x Xerox machine plus operator 1 x small forest for paper supply (you'll need it) 1 x Fax machine (for letters expressing frustration to those who must be obeyed) 1 x Dictionary (for trendy new jargon not yet recognized in the Oxford dictionary) (for I x Interpreter communications with fellow humans about Unit Standards) I x Bloodhound (to track and retrieve lost sense of humour)

Large doses of sympathy from Senior Administration 1 x padded room (for inevitable tantrums and stress attacks) 48 hour days (a must) 1 x coffee machine and Brazil's annual export crop We would like to acknowledge the patient, longsuffering tolerance of our classroom inhabitants without whom none of this would have been possible (or necessary).

The Waharau Blues. We the advance party ( the minibus crew ) fought our way through the dense and steamy undergrowth, forever fearful of the native inhabitants of this hellish environment. When all seemed lost, the expedition leader, one Dr. Livingstone V.K. shrieked a piercing cry -'WASPS!!!" and, with that the advance party burst through the undergrowth into camp Wop-Wop - only to find that the rearguard of the expedition ( i.e. the bus ) had arrived before us, thanks to an ingenious device known as a ROAD! We had also been held up buying supplies for the expedition at Countdown, due to a very slow packer. Camp Waharau was, on first glance, a collection of crude huts stuck in the bush; we soon discovered however that it was a collection of crude huts stuck in the bush, surrounded by the largest swarm of wasps ever discovered in human history. The traditions of Geo camp remained easily apparent - Too much work - Not enough sleep - Too much food The camp was really enjoyable, except for the wasps. The resident exterminators, Savage & Co. managed a brilliant innings of 175 for 1, retired hurt (Wasps I, Gnatt 175) though only just being tolerated by the other students and teachers who were obviously getting sick of wasp guts on the windows. The food was tasty, unless you worked out what it was. All the students made the teachers work for their money asking many irrelevant questions 12

and getting just as many irreleve answers. There was little time I sleep, a matter of hours betwe work deadlines. And even the the nightlife was unbelievable new tattoos overnight, al Phantom Flashers. Expeditions from Base Camp various points along the migh Waihihihahaho stream were led various Famous Figures, includir "I'm O.K.V.K., Briggs the Bu Bashing Butcher from Balcluti and Perry, the "I won't slip, to me!" man. These expeditio were quite stylish and work-han with great hazards for those of who were less sure-foot, (managing to drown in 10 cm. water). The hour of departure came ni with little incident, bar Mr. Pen attempted assault on an innocE piece of wood, resulting in sprained ankle. Chocolate fi were awarded to all for reaso ranging from the sublime to t ridiculous. The bus-boardi procedure was fast, due to sudden mid-day wasp assai (these ones were faster and t Exterminator had a Booboo on I middle finger). The trip back was deathly sile except for the noise, which w deafening. The arrival at schc was subdued and we all left to home to mummies and daddi4 Some walked; some ran; sor hobbled; and some remained the school morgue for a few days BUT - we did have fun . Mathematics Department At the end of Term One, Mrs V. Singh took maternity leave and Mr M. Whichman left the school to become Head of Department at Hillary College. Mrs Singaravelu and Mrs Sewpershad were appointed to fill these positions. As usual, this year, we displayed the best 100 of our junior mathematics projects in the Manurewa Library. The best of these were sent to the Auckland Mathex competition which was held, this year at the Pavilion of New Zealand at Mangere. MingChun Wu (Form 4) and Paul Miller (Form 3) gained second place in the Mathematical Investigation section at their form level. Jonathon Clayton (Form 3) was highly recommended. Our Form 3 team consisting of Karla Anderson, Alice Farrell, Shara Curlett and Andrea Irwin won first place in the PaperPlus South Auckland Mathex quiz. In the Bank of New Zealand Mathematics Competition, held in Term 2, Matthew Savage of Form 7 was placed in the Top 100 students for New Zealand. This is a difficult competition, hotly contested by hundreds of senior students throughout the country. To get into the top 100 is an achievement indeed. Next year, Mathematics will be offered to Form 6 and to Mathematics with Applications I and 2 under NZQA's "Framework". Form Three Camps1995 There were four camps during Terms I and II with 285 Form Three pupils attending all together, with guidance from a total of 44 staff, parents and instructors and the "liaison" prefects attending to help their classes. The programme was similar to the last couple of years and designed to encourage the pupils to learn new skills in the outdoors and to work together as teams in supporting each other. The activities in the day programme were: Tramping Each group tramped for a day in the streams and tracks of the park,finding out how to travel naturally.

The weather proved to be kind to us this year, with our weeks at the camp managing to coincidewith the gaps between storms. We again used the services of outside instructors, John Hawcridge from "The Adventure Source"and Dianna Rands and Lizzie Baker from "Wanderwoman". Of course, none of this would have been possible without the vast amount of extra work put in by all the staff involved in the programme. Thanks to you. Sailing A half day was spent trying to master the Optimist sailing dinghies. Canoeing Each group had a half day session learning the basics of controlling land capsizing!) kayaks . Orienteering Basic map reading skills and cross country running combined to lose a few. Confidence Course Clambering, climbing, swinging balancing and crashing! Pipehenge Finding out about the Earth's position and movements in space and thebasics of day and night, the seasons and time using our 20th centuryversion of Stonehenge challenged a few minds! A variety of evening games were organised by the staff and prefects to provide entertainment and some challenges.

1 995 Classical Studies and Art History Camp At Waharau. We arrived at Waharau after a long and tiring bus ride on a Friday morning, in the second week of Term Two. Nothing happened on the bus ride. The bus was Very Big. Upon arrival, we rapidly discovered that the third form had left the camp a filthy mess. So we spent the entire afternoon cleaning both Camp and Kitchen. The Friday evening was left to (so called) leisure time, involving work and cookery classes, care of Mr. R.P. Lees. On the second day, seminars began, after a 4:15 am start for the Cooks and Mr. Lees. Work continued throughout the day, with interesting talks from Mr. Lees, Mr. Kilgour and Ms. Forstner. We all learnt a lot about each others' subjects, and also about who worked and who didn't.

The interrelation between students of the various classes resulted in interesting, almost comical confrontations and conflagrations, particularly with the innocent and unprovocative sixth form Classics students and the violent seventh formers thus resulting in periods of nonconstructive activities (running round the hall to escape torture). Wasps were of no trouble with only a single kill over the weekend, and the possibility of pig invasion became more and more unlikely, although the eating habits of some of the students resembled those of the aforementioned stereotypical farm type. That night we all gathered to worship our teachers (NOT) in a 'toga'/'underwear party' featuring 15

a feast prepared by those glorious cooks and Mr Lees , which was feastfully fantastic and naturally of the fine standard of our sponsors the 'fancy food 'cat chow company. The final day featured sudden downpours and an increasing occurance of violence towards innocent troublemakers. A quick catch up on work and study was initiated followed closely by a thorough tidy-up. Whilst swimming to the bus, we almost all agreed that this camp was worth our while, almost. (It wasn't long enough).

Advanced Debating in the Auckland Debating Association Competition "Histories make men wise; poets, witty; the mathematics, subtle; natural philosophy, deep; moral, grave; logic and rhetoric' able to contend." It is always the same before every debate. We ask the same questions - Who are we debating? What is the moot? Why am I doing this?

Our last debate was "that schooling in New Zealand is heading into the danger zone". The sixth form team won narrowly against Howick College; unfortunately, as this was our last debate for Manurewa High School. Members of both teams would like to thank Mrs Chan, Mr Leilua for his desperately needed input, and in particular, Miss Thomas, who organised rides home and helped with ideas while Mrs Chan was in Europe.

The first are often easily answered but to this day, the third remains a mystery. Nonetheless, we all return every year to subject ourselves to the same thing over and over.

The Reading Room At Manurewa High School, wt firmly believe that 'kids who rear succeed.' To help all of ou, students to improve their readinJ skills, the school offers tw' specific reading programmes junior level. The SSR programme operate across the curriculum, enablin students to read books of thei own choice three or four time every week at school. Th programme is based on the maxi that every word you read make you a better reader. The Library The library has been a hive of activity throughout the year for learning, reading and research during class time, and also in student's own time before school, at interval and lunch times. Booking has become an anxious time for teachers, with fewer spaces than ever, despite our best efforts to keep the library available. A large number of students receive their reading certificates through the library. We now have multi media computers where students can consult INNZ (Index New Zealand) to track down articles in New Zealand magazines (which are then ordered from the National Library in Wellington). The computers are also used for other reference sources, such as Encarta. At the beginning of term three writer Maurice Gee and illustrator Paula Bock met some of our students and autographed copies of books. A team of student librarians under the responsible leadership of Jordan Carter have done a good job (most of the time!) this year.

Computers for Schools Competition In this year's grocery store competition, The Manurewa High School was one of the highest scoring schools. We collected enough vouchers for a multi-media 486 DX2/66 IBM computer which is being used in the Geography Department. The greater mathematical capabilities of this machine combines well with the gift by the Manukau City Council of their district plan on CD ROM.

YOUNG ENTERPRISE REPORT During February, our Young Enterprise Group, WOOD 'N' THINGS formed ourselves into a company. After much brainstorming and deliberation we decided upon our product - wooden doorstops. According to our market survey, we found that there was a market for Rimu doorstops. These were purchased from Wood Shapers Ltd in Papatoetoe. It was our job to cut these units in half, sand, seal, stain and polish them ready for our customers. We hired the Wood/Technology workshop for two mornings during the school holidays. Our thanks go to Mr Platt who kindly demonstrated the correct procedure for cutting and finishing the doorstops, and gave up his time to help us. We decided to put a label on our product which Hoana Parangi, one of the supporters, designed on computer. This was laminated and attached to the doorstop with string. We sold our product to staff, friends and relations as well as participating in the Young Enterprise Fair held at St Lukes Shopping Centre in July.

HONIA1 RESOURCE ROOM Twenty four students with visual impairment have been enrolled at The Manurewa High School in 1995 and are supported by the Homai Visual Resource Room and its staff. The students have participated in many aspects of school life, and this year especially in music. Olitta Tuiloma, Faaolo Utumapu, Toreapo Marsters, plus two of Olitta's brothers and Alapeta Baas formed an a cappella group called "Six Senses" and performed for the school. This group had already enjoyed considerable success in a competition for a cappella groups, as a result of which they sang on 531 PI, Access and Reo Atumatu radio stations. Several students were members of the school choir which qualified to go to the New Zealand Secondary School Finals in Christchurch. Olitta Tuiloma played the piano on several occasions for school assemblies and sometimes accompanied the choir.

During the year computer equipment in the Visual Resource Room was upgraded by Homai College to include CD Rom which has enabled the students to quickly access information. This information can then be readily converted to large print or braille. This new facility has made a huge difference for the visually impaired students' ability to do research and gain access to information for a whole range of subjects and thus achieve greater independence. The Resource Room has been staffed by Mrs Jill Farmer and Mrs Donna Cox with the assistance of several teacher aides.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT 1995 1995 was another busy year for the music department. As well as competing nationally with the choir and producing the musical "South Pacific", Mr Weeks and Miss Webb have been kept busy with a variety of performances throughout the year. A successful "Autumn Showcase" concert was held at the end of term I, featuring the Fosters Auckland Brass Band and guest soprano Fiona Ferens, as well as various school groups and soloists. The school choir has gone from strength to strength this year. As well as their success in the Smokefree Secondary Schools Choral Festival, they have performed at many concerts and functions , including the V.J. Day Celebration Concert at the Aotea Centre,the Multi Serve Education Awards at the Aotea Centre, the Auckland Town Hall (as guests of the Fosters Auckland Brass Band), and many local centres.

As well as all the musical groups, Manurewa High School has an increasing number of keen and talented students who are achieving excellent results on a wide range of instruments . Mr Weeks and Miss Webb would like to thank the hard working and dedicated team of itinerant teachers for their input this year. This year several new players joined the concert band : Glyn Turner (clarinet), Shelley Hatton (trumpet), Alex Carter (trumpet), Sunia Pasi (euphonium), Woo-sug Kang (saxophone), and Kerrin Osborne (flute).The concert band has performed throughout the year, and is currently busy preparing for their prizegiving performances.

This year saw the establishment of the String Orchestra. Under the guidance of Miss Webb, they met every Wednesday for rehearsal and have played a wide variety of music throughout the year.The String Orchestra are making their debut performance at this years prizegivings. In June this year a school band "Y4Life" competed in the Rockquest competition for school bands. Sulusi Eteru, Frank Thompson, Waipounamu Silberry, Rei Singsam and Sydneyrella Singsam performed exceptionally well and made it through into the South Auckland Regional Final.

The concert band has continued to meet every week , and now has over 20 members.

SCIENCE PROJECTS All students from forms three to six are required to carry out an investigation in science - "their project" - which is geared towards the Science Fair. They also have the opportunity to enter their project for a CREST award. The projects were due in during the first week of Term II and were judged by the class teachers that week (22 - 26 May). Interclass judging for each form level was held during 29 May to 2 June after which time some of the projects were taken to the Manurewa Public Library.

Telecom Technology Roadshow This year the Telecom Technology Roadshow came to The Manurewa High School in October. The roadshow was based in the small gym for five days, (from the 9th till the 13th), during which time Form 3 students from MHS and neighbouring primary and intermediate schools had the opportunity to visit. Students were chosen from 4BK and 4WD to assist with the roadshow - their tasks were to explain and supervise the exhibits in conjunction with the demonstrators. It also enabled them to become better acquainted with modern science technology. The "show" consisted of two science and technology demonstrations at both ends of the 90 minutes time slot, with the rest of the time spent in individual interactive work. Displays and experiments reflected present science & technology and students enjoyed the "hands-on" experience.

Individual Science Professional Development Programme A new curriculum in Science has been introduced to New Zealand schools. Four of our teachers, (Miranda Makin, Rick Reiter, Tony Parlane and Nalini Sumer), have been involved in a professional development programme so that we can confidently introduce this new curriculum into our school. The programme involved the teachers taking part in three days of in-service training spread over six months. They received four separate visits of in-school support by trained facilitators attached to the Auckland Education Advisory Service. The teachers involved worked towards meeting individual professional development goals within school-wide goals. They tried ideas with their classes which link in with the new content and philosophy of Science in the New Zealand Curriculum. 21

The Projects were displayed at the library for two weeks - June 2-19. During that period many MHS pupils, other school pupils and members of the public visited the display. The school received a number of favourable comments on the interesting topics the students had chosen and the quality of their work. Fifteen projects were then entered into the Merck Sharp & Dohme Manukau City Regional Science Fair. This was hosted by MHS from 22-27 July and had entries from 35 schools in the Manukau area. Many of our students dic very well, receiving certificate' and prizes. The Premier Prize wa, won by Zoe Murphy - $500 and , trip to Kaikoura to go Whal , Watching. Three projects from our Region; Fair were selected for the Nation Fair in Wellington - Zoe Murphy and Nicole Thomson's (both Fro MHS), and David Stewart's from Kentigerns College. Visitors at judges were impressed by tl variety and depth of the studen projects and felt that the F. reflected the high standard Science teaching in our Sot Auckland schools.

Siemens Science School Siemens Science School was a course which ran on the 5th - 7th September. It was an opportunity for 5th form students from all over Auckland to participate in a course which extends your knowledge of science and how you can use it in everyday life. Mr Reiter organised the Manurewa High School students who wanted to be in the course and we were sent information about our groups and the different courses. As this was the first year for the school, Rotary paid for all 300 students to attend. We arrived at Penrose High School on Tuesday 5th September and there we met our groups and April Ieremia talked to us as a guest speaker about her past experiences and how we should grab every opportunity given. After that our groups were split up and sent to either A.I.T or M.I.T. Our first day was to be spent at A.I.T doing Environmental Science and Medical Science. These two courses were really fun, but especially the Medical Science. There we dissected a deer's heart and lungs as well as learning about our breathing by doing various tests. This was a hands on period which made it interesting.

The second day was at the M.I.T, where we did Mechanical Engineering. At this course we learnt about different types of machinery, and engraved rulers. After that we had an industrial visit to Wastecare Services. There we walked around the plant and were talked to about how they have changed the city by their natural disposing methods. The final day was at C.H.A.T.S in the morning, and the M.I.T again in the afternoon. At C.H.A.T.S, we baked lots of food and ate it for lunch, and after that we went to the horticulture section where we were shown around the gardens and in the greenhouse we planted sunflower seeds which we took home afterwards. In the afternoon when were back at the M.I.T, we had a course on Electrical Engineering. Here we made an electronic game called Simon and we kept that also. These courses were interesting as it was all hands-on experience. After the three day course a barbeque was held back at Penrose High School, were all 300 students were given certificates. Overall, Seimens Science School was a well organised, en joyful event, where 5th formers from all over Auckland learnt something new. Form 7 Goat Island Tri Early in term one the 7th went to Goat Island to observi behaviour as part of their Bii course. The Leigh Marine Re! gets many visitors at that tin the year as the weather is u<_ terrific and the marine plentiful. ACTION TECHNOLOGY

The Form 6 Biology students went to Waharau earlier this year for a three day camp. The theme of the camp was ecology and the students had to put the theory they had learnt into practice. The weather was excellent and facilitated the practicals that needed to be carried out.

Students undertook a survey of the stream and investigated the f4NP biotic and abiotic factors at two different sites. Comparisons were made and reasons for °St:: similarities/differences were suggested. The surrounding forest area was used to carry out stratification, identification of the native trees and to determine if • — ecological succession had taken place. The boulder beach was the site of a zonation exercise. The survey carried out showed a drop in the number and the diversity of organisms when compared to studies carried out in the previous years. Free time was spent playing ball games, listening to music, chatting or going for bush walks. Group games such as volleyball and other activities provided much hilarity. The evenings were spent quietly - writing up the practicals and preparing for the next day's work. Thanks must go to Mrs Sumer, Mr Hodgson and Mrs Pretty for the organisation and the smooth running of the camp. Thanks also to Malte (our exchange student) and the bio class for the 'fun' times.

Action Technology is a Ministerial contract that is being trialed in Auckland and Wellington. The aim of this contract is to introduce technology as part of the new curriculum in New Zealand h schools. Segments of the course showing participants involved in the practicals have recently been on the Technology Updates 41.*programme on ETV.

Five science teachers have been involved in this exciting programme : Christine Howard, Vijay Govender, Miranda Makin, Shane Hodgson and Nalini Sumer. The in-service days were held on weekends and school holidays.

Siemans Science School 22 of our top Form 5 students were offered places in the Siemans Science School which was held during September 5-7. Manukau Polytechnic hosted this exciting and interesting course. The students were involved in practical Science activities such as electronics, dissections and titrations. The activities were designed to stimulate and extend them, and as a result many of the students have been encouraged to pursue careers in science.

They have already taken part in an introduction day in April and a three days live-in during the May holidays. Three more days in the August holidays were spent in industries that utilise either biotechnology, control technology or electronics. The teachers' role was to adapt some of the industrial ideas/strategies/processes for use in the classroom. It also made it possible for them to bring the industry (technology) to the classroom or take the students for a visit to the "real world". At the end of November a further in-service day was held to evaluate the programme and to share ideas/resources and units of work with other teachers on the course. The contract proved to be very worthwhile for all involved.

CREST Over the last few years Science projects have increased in popularity. Pupils are becoming increasingly interested in pursuing an area of science they are interested in, rather than just "having to do another science project". We currently encourage the students to take part in a programme called CREST which encourages Creativity and Experimentation in Science. The pupils can enter for a Bronze, Silver or Gold award. Bronze is school based, Silver and Gold require the use of a consultant outside the school, so the time put in by a number of students is in some cases quite remarkable. The following graph shows just how this has taken off in recent years, and how already we are well on our way to surpassing previous years' totals.

MONTY BURROWS Manurewa High School 6th Former, Monty Burrows has just returned from a one month all expenses paid trip to Singapore. Monty was one of just two students selected nationally to participate in the 1995 Science Research Program.

Cultural and Recreational activities were included. The group was taken to places of interest in Singapore, such as the Science Centre, jurong Bird Park, Orchard Road, Marina Bay and Sentosa Island.The superior sports facilities were also utilised, Introducing Monty to School especially in the evenings. This Assemblies to tell the student program also included tennis, body what he had done, 2nd badminton and basketball. Principal Mrs E Dixon said how proud Manurewa High School was At the completion of the course, of his achievements. She also said Monty gave a ten minute speech that Manurewa High School was on his project in front of the proud of its Science program Professors, Lecturers and which offered all students the Students. There were 18 speeches opportunity to participate in and Monty spoke last on the program. The 1995 Research Program was sponsored by the Gifted Education Research Unit of the Singapore Ministry of Education, the Shaw Foundation and the National University of Singapore. The program was designed to give 6th Form students the opportunity to participate in research projects under the guidance of NUS scientists and engineers. Two students were from NZ, as well as two students each from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, Thailand and China. Raffles College student Sherilyn Tay was Monty's partner and his mentor was Dr Koh. A lecturer in immunology at the University, Dr Koh also has a General Practice in the city. Skills such as Maths, Computer skills, Graphical Analysis and General Scientific Knowledge were all needed in Monty's Research Project.

Form Seven Graphics The photograph shows the end result of a Form Seven Bursary Graphics design brief. The bridges were constructed as part of the brief. The models seen are on a scale of 1:20. Structures were designed to span 12m and support 800kg. The theme of the brief was that an old fashioned sailing boat runs aground on a reef and all equipment including a diesel powered generator has to be transferred to the main island.

Technology Challenges Challenges were underway for Science and Technology week August 8-12. Students and staff involved themselves in "challenges" to promote lateral thinking and extend their ideas in science. This was also good practice for the BP Technology Challenge! Pupils found these lessons stimulating, interesting and enjoyable. Examples of challenges were: garments and accessories from newspapers and sticky tape, the largest and strongest bridge from ice-block

Available materials were scaled and using real life measurements, planking from the boat 10x50x1000 corresponded with lolly sticks and 6mm diameter dowel equated with the size of the boats masts. Students were allowed nylon cord for the rigging ropes and glue. No nails or pins of any kind were allowed. Results varied from a suspension arrangement with an arch to a box and girder design and a laminated plank.

BP Technology Challenge Form 4 students were given the opportunity to exercise their creativity and originality in designing/constructing objects using a limited range of materials. The items they were given included newspaper, sticky tape, scissors, straws, string, and paperclips. 27

Most held the required 40kg for the model (relating to 800kg real life) with some holding beyond the required load. Other major briefs this year have included a School Department sign amd publicity brochure, the re-designing of a kindergarten play area, room lighting arrangement and a sports clothing assignment.

Class teams competed and a 'winning combination' was chosen to represent the school. The school team then competed against fourth formers from other Auckland schools in the BP Technology Challenge. The event was held on August 10 at the Auckland city YMCA. This year's theme was the Americas Cup, and the teams were asked to design and build a "Land Yacht", given the necessary parameters. The organising committee managed to get Peter Montgomery as the MC and he provided an exciting and stimulating atmosphere for the contestants.

1995 Prefects Team building activities started our year, down in Rotorua for four days of adventure, fun and a few seminars thrown in. The 1995 Prefects proved they were tough and could handle anything when they graciously toppled into the white water rapids, handled a day a shopping and were told the bad news about the broken Karaoke machine. Once we became a team, we proved ourselves further, at the Prefects Fun Assembly. Some of us showed our previously hidden talents - eh, Dean and the New World Girls! But this wasn't all plain sailing, it took a lot of rehearsals and dedicated Prefects to prefect the quality show. The same can be said of the effort that went into the annual Prefects' Ball . This was a most successful occasion, even though the French theme coincided with some unfortunate events in the South Pacific! Marcus and I would like to thank Mr Thomson, Mrs Dixon and Miss Moore for all their help and support, thanks must go also to this year's Prefects for the hard work they have put into their duties. We wish the 1996 Prefects well, and trust they have a similarly rewarding year!

PREFECTS BALL On Friday, July 14, the 1995 prefects held the annual school ball at the Ellerslie Function Centre. In the beginning of the year, we decided on what turned out to be quite a controversial theme. As the date was the 14th of July, we themed the ball around the French national holiday, Bastille Day, which is held on this This celebration day. commemorates the storming of the Bastille, a heavily fortified prison, by the civilians of France. This was done as a protest for the freedom of the people. Although the theme was 'French", we prefer to think of it as being a celebration of the people against the French hierarchy, which will hopefully be achieved when the French stop nuclear testing at Mururoa. Anyway On the night, all the hard work that was put into organising this year's ball was worth while as everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely. DJ Glen pumped it in the house mama with his hipnofying house beats. It was mighty fly to see all those hip and happ'nin young brothers and sisters kickin' it to the funky bass beats in their stylin' threads. Arms and legs were a - flying round the dance floor with a do-cee-do of a "Cotton Eye loe", y'all. To all my brothers and sisters who slaved away in the cooking house, I say "word up bro, mighty good kai was a goin' down our throats and fillip' our bellies with those scrum diddly - umtious flavours." The Choir Trip to Christchurch In June our school competed in the Auckland Regional competition of the Smokefree Secondary Schools Choral Festival, held in the Auckland Town Hall. After an outstanding performance (and a nerve wracking few days for Mr Weeks and Miss Webb) we learned that we had been selected as one of four choirs to represent Auckland at the National Finale in Christchurch. Nineteen choirs had been chosen nationally out of the one hundred and twenty that had taken part in the Regional competitions throughout New Zealand. After a frantic few weeks of fundraising, the eighty-four members of the M.H.S. Choir flew down to Christchurch on Friday I I August. The next day we had a 7.30 are start, and our breakfast consisted of a van load of McDonald's! This was followed by a journey to St Andrew's College, the venue of the National Finale, where we competed in the Baroque and Classical section ("Hallelujah Chorus") and won! This set the pace for the next few days when we gained a third place in the Gospel and Spiritual section ("0 Happy Day"), and a place in the top five for Popular Film and Stage ("Another Op'nin' Another Show"). In between performing at five different competitions we managed to squeeze in a visit to "Not lust Bears" the ultimate Teddy Bear shop, the International

Antarctic Centre, Wigram Airforce Museum, Christchurch Arts Centre and of course, Cathedral Square. We even managed an evening of ten pin bowling, and I beat Mr O'Donnell! The highlight of the trip was performing on the Monday night with all the other choirs at the Christchurch Town Hall. In the Finale Concert we sang our prize winning songs, G.F. Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" and "0 Happy Day". We received a well deserved standing ovation. After four days of roughing it in the South Island, we flew back to Auckland on the Tuesday morning and performed in the V.J. Day concert at the Aotea Centre, then back to our Mums and Dads at 4.00pm. As well as the friends we made and the fun we had, it was an honour to represent the schoor and also Auckland_ On behalf of the choir, I would like to thank most sincerely the following people for their tremendous efforts on our behalf: Mr Weeks ( Dad), Miss Webb (Mum), Mrs Taylor, Mr and Mrs Houston, Mr O'Donnell, Mrs Farmer, Mrs Beesley, Mrs Parlane, Mrs Williams and Mrs Fountain_ We are also grateful to the many people who supported our fundraising events. Christian Fellowship Following the trend over the past few years, much of the group's programme has centred around the organisation of productions for assemblies, the first at Easter, and the second at the end of Term 2. Our Easter theme was that success is not an automatic ticket to happiness. The drama was written by Zoe Murphy, whose support for the group over the past three years has been deeply appreciated. About 40 group members took part in this Easter production. Especially memorable were Seluone Seluone as the school prize winner, David Diack as Mr Thomson and a Roman soldier, Quentin Brown as Jesus being crucified, Annette Jackson-Potter as Mrs Shortland, and Paul Marshall and Cecilia Yandall as sports freaks. Our school chaplain, Jergun Matthesius, wrote the script for the August production, based on Jesus' parable of the wise and foolish men. The two "mothers" Michael Tiplady and David Diack will never be forgotten, and Andrea Bates and Anna Murphy did a great fob as Sand Man and Rock Man. We had a lot of fun preparing both productions, and the school seemed to enjoy them. As well as these productions, we had weekly meetings and Bible studies. Some meetings were taken by outside speakers such as the Operation Jerusalem Team. David Grace gave a lunchtime concert and meetings were also organised by both students and teachers. It is always sad to farewell folk who have put a lot of work into Christian Fellowship for up to five Hamish years, including MacDonald, Paul Marshall, Seluone Seluone, Michael Tiplady, Quenten Brown, Zoe Murphy, Matthew Savage and Anita Voisey. We will miss you guys, but know that God has some awesome leaders for the group next year.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEME The award had a small but determined group of Students this year. These people demonstrated initiative in the pursuit of their programmes. It is pleasing to see a number of junior students starting this year. A positive sign. The award provides a personal challenge in the areas of service, recreation, skills and expedition. It is a good way of learning about yourself and developing your interests. It is also valued by employers. A big thank you to Quentin Brown for his help this year. As you Like It!! That was the theme for this years Junior Dance. This year it was decided that the Junior Dance could be used as a source of fundraising for our very successful choir who had been selected to go to the nationals as one of only 19 in the whole country. "Muzza" the DJ was contacted and it was all go . Although it was a Junior Dance, the choir members, Senior or Junior, were encouraged to come as well to support the event. A resounding success. That was the overwhelming opinion of the juniors present and many were asking, as they were leaving, when the next dance would be.

History Trips This year the History Department has organised two day trips. Form 7 looked at sites connected with the New Zealand Wars of the 1860's in March, and Form 5 visited the Naval Base, North Head and Bastion Point to look at New Zealand's defences in connection with themes on World War II and International Relations since 1945. The 7th Formers were able to see where Redoubt Road got its name, and visit battle and redoubt sites in Drury, Mauku and the northern Waikato as far south as Rangariri. A highlight of this trip was visit to the newly opened visitor centre at Rangariri, followed by a Waka trip on the Waikato River. The 5th Formers were able to see over the Naval Base, scramble all over the gun emplacements and tunnels of North Head and pay a visit to Bastion Point (so flying that the bus didn't actually stop!) Both trips were a lot of fun and made history studies come alive. To those 6th Formers who moan each year about no trip for them, we can only say it would be great? to visit Sarajevo, Ho Chi Minh City, Berlin and New Delphi. but there could be a few practical problems in arranging day trips to these places!

Apii Henry and Sandi Franks are giving money to a Buddhist priest begging in front of Shinjuku station in Tokyo. Buddhism is another of Japan's religions which sees the source of ill as being within our own minds. At temples a variety of spells are given for a range of favours which include curing sickness, safety from traffic accidents, passing exams and finding brides.

Manurewa High School has become involved in several different exchange programmes. They are all a wonderful way to meet new friends and a superb opportunity for adventurous souls to explore a new culture and experience a totally different life style while being an ambassador for New Zealand.

Being an American Field Service exchange student has been the most important and wonderful choice in my life. A big challenge.

January was a busy time for AFS exchanges. Mark Taylor (6CN 93) returned from his year in Germany speaking fluent German and sporting a very continental hair style. Sandra Peters (6PK 94) disappeared into the unchartered territory of Brazil where she is having a wonderful time and Patricia Onedera (7PN) came from Brazil to spend a year at MHS. Patricia is very impressed with our singing assemblies and has learnt how to ski and throw snowballs.

Who don't know me...I'm the brazilian "crazy girl" Trisha (or Patricia) from the soccer country, the best in the world, summer all over the year, carnival, lambada, warmth and friendly people. Ah, by the way...I don't speak Spanish or Brazilian...I speak Portuguese!!! Shock horror for some people.

In June we lost Kerstin Sauter (7BR) who returned to Germany after a busy year in New Zealand and in August Anthony Rankin (form 7) left to spend a year in the USA. Next July Jennie Caro11 (5GN) heads off to join several other AFS students in the Netherlands where she is looking forward to experiencing a white Christmas and skating on the canals.

1995 were a such awesome and special year. I have learned heaps about life, culture and about myself. The Manurewa High School have been contributing heaps to my awesome time here. Studying at a different school system, meeting cool people, being in contact with Samoan group, Maori culture, choir...They are so good. And also learning English...and more. ..the slangs! Hanne Mustonen (7KL) was a rotary exchange student from Finland who joined us in August '95 and returned home in July of this year taking with her a kiwi accent , lots of mementoes and a well filled address book. Twin exchange Rotary students spend 14 weeks across the Tasman and then return bringing with them their Australian ''twin" , strange accents and changed tastes in food. Robert May (5SB) went to Australia in January and returned in May with twin Tim Phillips. At the time of going to press we do not know who our 1996 representatives will be but we wish them well and look forward to welcoming their "twin" in the second term.

Hei Everyone!!!! I had an awesome and unforgettable year in New Zealand, probably of my life so far. Many things were very different from Finland, but eventually I even got used to the school uniform! I did many unforgettable things and travelled to many places in New Zealand and Australia. All I can say is that if possible, spend a year in another country, it's an awesome experience!!! Hei and thanks to all my friends and people I met during the year!!

The Asian Club The Asian Club got off to a good start with an early barbecue at the school pool to welcome new members and catch up with the old, The weather was great and the school pool was put to good use. It was pleasing to see some parents participate and the special cake they had made was much appreciated. Two groups started cultural activities: one to learn Vietnamese traditional dancing; and the other to explore the chances of producing a play from a traditional and famous story in Chinese literature, The Monkey King'. They would like to thank Mr Alderton for his help and suggestions. Table tennis is a sporting activity just recently started by the club, meeting one lunchtime a week and rapidly increasing in numbers. It is purely a fun session and club focal point. The trip to Paradise Ice Skating Rink has become so popular, that well over 50 students made the trip on a Saturday afternoon with Mrs Murdie and Mrs Douglas. This year, there were only minor blisters, bruises and sore ankles; fewer students who had never skated before; and some who were skating pretty well. The afternoon proved enjoyable enough for numerous demands to be made to Mrs Douglas for another trip to be held - if not the following week, then sometime before the end of the year. The Club would like to thank its President, Linda Juang and Secretary, Amy Liao for helping with the organisation of the activities and wishes them well at University next year.

Horticultural Success

I had the pleasure of organising a group of senior students who would stay behind after school when everyone else had gone home to get mud, leaves, paint and chocolate over themselves.

When Mr Hodgson, our Horticulture teacher announced the Schools Landscape Design Competition , run in conjunction with this years Ellerslie Flower Show, I was keen to enter. Contestants were given a plan of a section in a school garden, and a list of specifications. I sent in my entry, which was one of the six finalists. Then I was interviewed by the judges and the winners were announced. In the senior section there were two bronze medals, and one of them was awarded to me! This will be presented at the opening of the Flower Show on 14 November. I believe my garden design will complement the new Science Block which is going to be built on the east side of the school. This bronze medal and the certificate represent a great start to my horticultural career.

We started the year with a general clean up and prune of shrubs around the buildings. In the second term Manukau City Council presented us with an Environmental award and tree voucher in recognition of the service we have given Manurewa high school over the last twenty years. To help with the rubbish around the school we purchased another ten rubbish bins. The painting of the bins in some eye catching designs was a little due to the fumes we endured during painting.Some members were able to paint themselves as well as the bins. Members for 95 - Nathanael Savage, Matthew Savage,Ngoc Tran, Shaileshni Pillay, Julia Smith, Michaela Beacham, Kristina Kravcenko, Jordan Carter, Aaron Bellamy, Nicole Thomson Craig Montgomery and Trevor Hunter. AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL Living in New Zealand it is hard for any of us to imagine our homes being invaded and members of our family being taken away and put into custody, not knowing for how long, why, or if they will ever come out alive. In many of the countries that Manurewa High School Amnesty International Group deal with, this happens, and often. There are tales of the ignoring of human rights throughout the world. Brutality, murders and imprisonment. These are the things that Amnesty International try to stop. This year we had a smaller group than before but nonetheless dedicated. Throughout the year we have written letters of protest mainly on so called 'disappearances' in places such as Turkey, Indonesia, Nigeria and the former Yugoslavia; Croat against Bosnian, Bosnian against Serb, Serb against Muslim. Our big project for this year was helping in Amnesty International's annual fundraiser, Candle Day, on October 19th. Thanks to all those who supported us by buying badges and candles. From Tripoli Before I came to New Zealand I lived in Libya for five years. I lived in Tripoli which is the capital of Libya. My Dad was working in a hospital , as he is a doctor , and our house was a flat in a complex that belonged to the hospital itself and was called "Salahuddin Hospital". It was the best complex in Tripoli as it was clean and most Libyans living there were doctors who lived in England and America. Libya was a nice country but the worst thing is that it is very hot in summer as the highest temperature in the world was recorded in the 1960's in one of the cities " AlAzizia" which was 56.7 C . Winter is not bad , a bit of rain and cold but snow can fall in the mountain areas. It is a sandy country , no grass found but flowers and trees everywhere. Shops were full of everything , but nothing was Libyan made , all made in Egypt , Italy , Tunisia and some China. Italian made clothes and shoes were the best and the most expensive. The wealthiest place was " Gergaresh " where rich people have their villas the best supermarkets are there.

Not many people live in sec houses like here , most have in buildings , even in the m of the city. Shops can be f open till 9pm or even some till lOpm. In Ramadan which i month when Moslems don't e drink from sunrise till sunset after taking their breakfast at people start going out shop till lam or even longer , ar that time shops can still be c You have to have your owl wherever you go because t are no services to take you place to place. Smokefree Stage Challenge 1995 The Stage Challenge was introduced to New Zealand in 1 993. It is an opportunity for schools to perform dramatically in movement and dance to a compiled musical track. Manurewa High School has taken part in all three events so far. The theme for 1995 was heroism and betrayal in a timeless kingdom. It involved characters as diverse as medieval Kings and Queens and 'Homies,' or street kids of the I990s. The music ranged from Tina Turner's 'We Don't Need Another Hero' through compositions by Rick Wakeman, Human League, Enigma and an extract from 'Chess'. Set and costumes helped create locations from the urban streets to a medieval village and torture chamber. The cast involved over 100 students from fourth to seventh forms. Strong lead roles were portrayed by Tui Manuel, Daniel Sublette and Steven Shaw, although the performance was made successful by the focus and energy of the entire cast. The crew facilitated professional transitions in scenery which were commended by the judging panel. The final standard of performance was only achieved after 10 weeks of dedicated rehearsals after school and at weekends. The driving force behind all three stage challenges has been the former head of Drama, Mrs. Sharon Graham, who conceived, choreographed and directed the production until leaving for a position at Kings College. The 1995 Stage Challenge was brought to completion under the direction of Messrs Alderton and Cook and Miss Briggs. Mr O'Donnel, Mr Reiter, Mrs McCrystal, Mrs Satyapal, Mrs Sanson and Mrs Mulcahy worked within their own fields of expertise to augment the performance . The event was held at the Aotea Centre in front of an enthusiastic audience with many of our own students providing what could only be politely described as

'strong' vocal support. The cast hit their peak on the evening and were well received by judges and audience. Manurewa High School received awards for: Best Choreography Best Lighting Best Soundtrack Best Costumes Best Set Design and Staging Most Entertaining For the first time in three years the School also won the overall award - a Gold Compact Disk and a cheque for $500.

Volleyball The progress achieved by the girls' volleyball teams in previous years was continued during the 1995 season. The junior girls' team were successful in achieving second place in the Auckland championships in November 1994, and were placed 8th at the North Island tournament. Michelle Baker was selected for the tournament team. The senior girls competed for the first time in the South Auckland secondary schools zone during term I as this provided stronger competition than the Counties zone. They were successful in winning the zone and then proceeded to the Auckland championships to defend their title. The whole team played extremely well and progressed to the final without dropping a set where they met old rivals, Kelston Girls' High School. This game was a tight contest but Manurewa High won in three closeâ€” fought sets to win the Auckland title.

As a build up to the NZ Secondary Schools championships in Nelson the senior girls' team travelled to Rotorua to compete in the Western Heights Invitation tournament which they won against modest opposition. The NZ Volleyball Championships saw the team rise to new heights they were ranked ninth but made the semiâ€”finals for the first time ever. Ellesmere High were our opponents and defeated narrrowly, 3 sets to 1; so a very meritorious third placing was the outcome of their efforts. Simone Turner was selected for the tournament team, and both she and Farrah Lipsham achieved North Island Secondary School selection to play in a quadrangular tournament in Sydney with the South Island schools, New South Wales and Queensland later in the year. Cultural Council At the inaugural meeting on March 23rd, Cecelia Yandall, 7BR, was elected as Chairperson, with Robert Munkhoff as Deputy. Michaela Beacham, 7WY, acted as Secretary; Nicole Thomson, 7KL, co-ordinated liaison with Prefects; Julia Melville-Smith led the Steering Committee. Linking with Mrs Lal and the international Students, we participated in a shared dinner before overseas students departed. Anna Nguyen, 6MY, began a project for an International Assembly. The main Front-of-House activities for the year included the Autumn Showcase Concert, Choir Fundraising concerts, South Pacific Season, with ticket sales for each event. Ushering for Prizegiving Ceremonies concludes our year. Long Service certificates will be awarded at the Leavers' Dinner in December. Staff Convenors: Miss Briggs, Miss Thomas, Miss Forstner, Mrs Lal, Miss Gallot, with support from Mrs Pinkney and Ms Washer.

Once the main characters had been chosen , practices started in term two on Wednesday nights. Towards the end of the term the production camp was held at Willow park. This consisted mainly of all work and hardly any rest apart from the occasional 5 minute break. The show was really coming together and everyone was becoming a real team. During the August holidays we had two full day rehearsals for the whole cast and extra rehearsals for the main characters. Our excitement was starting to build as the opening night came closer and like any show it had its unfortunate mishaps but as we soon learned "the show must go on". The show

ran 18th to the 22nd of September with a full house almost every night and on the last night the number of people exceeded the number of seats. Oscar winning performances must go to Emile (Sulusi Eteru) - my husband to be- Bloody Mary (Alapeta Baas), Heartthrob Lt. Cable (Tim Matagi), Billis (Russell Newlyn) and all the rest of the cast ho were so professional. We ended the show with a celebration party and a sense of great accomplishment. A big thank-you to Mr Weeks Miss Webb , Mr Alderton , Miss Briggs and all the other people who helped whose efforts were so much appreciated.

Netball This year has provided some exciting, successful netball for the eight teams playing in the various competitions. The Open A played at the Windmill Road courts each Saturday in the ASB Combined Secondary Schools Competition. They came third, an outstanding achievement playing at this level of competition for the first time. Throughout the season they have been ably coached by Gail Pere whose help and guidance has been a key factor in their succcess. Along with the other school teams, the Open A played in the ASB Manukau Secondary Schools Competition each Wednesday and won their division, overcoming strong competition from Hillary College who had won against them the previous year. This was one of four trophies won by Man urewa High School netball teams in this competition. The Senior A and B teams played and enjoyed their games.

The 3A team, coached by Shaolin Faafili, showed their potential and talent by winning their division. The 3B team, coached by Kristine Eggleton worked hard throughout the season and developed real teamwork. The 3C team also played some good games. The 4B netball team organised by Mrs Bain unexpectedly won the trophy for their division. Despite continuing cancellations and forfeits, coached by Aroha Moore, they went on to win a great final. The 4A team has also had an outstanding year. They won their division of the Browns Road competition, the fourth form division of the ASB Coco Cola Tournament and came a very credible third in their division of the North Island Secondary Schools Championship. Coached by May Tauranga and I aylene Baker, the girls were dedicated and showed real team spirit which contributed to their success.

The Manurewa High School Maori Club Te Ahikaroa

1995 TE TAU 0 TE REO MAORI The year of Maori Language began for us in earnest with practices and live-ins held over the school holidays. Everyone worked very very hard and by the time school had started we had learned specially composed items pertaining to the Maori Language. Our tutors at this time were Kiri Ann Dickson, Keliegh Henare and Dwayne Hudson, all former pupils of this school. They pushed us,to the very extreme of endurance and the dedicated few were rewarded with selection to perform at the Manu Ariki National Competition in Taumaranui, where we were placed third overall. This was an excellent achievement considering the very high standard of other groups. One week later we repeated our performance at Mount Roskill Grammar School, the venue of the 1995 Auckland Secondary Schools Maori and Pacific Island Festival. This is the largest such festival in the world! Again we performed with distinction, gaining a first equal for one of the most sought after awards, the prestigious Trophy for TE MITA 0 TE REO, clarity of the spoken word. In April, the manager of our club, Mr Heke, resigned and Maehe Nikora was appointed as our new tutor. The Ngaruawahia

Coronation was to be our next competition, and another new bracket was composed and learned. Although unplaced on Turangawaewae, performing in front of Dame Te Atairangikaahu was an awesome experience - a feeling of being proud and being Maori . Over the following months we performed in Wiri, Manukau City, Papakura High School, Te Kuiti and of course in our own Assembly Hall. Finally on our calendar was the Manu Ariki Regionals Competition held at Waitakere College, where we again took out top honours, coming first in many categories. This enables us to compete at national level at Taumaranui next year. Our Maori Club is deservedly held in high esteem throughout Maoridom. We continue to be grateful for the support of Mr Thomson, the Board of Trustees, Teaching Staff, Students, Whanau, past members and other interested people.

The Samoan Group Talofa! As a group we would like to thank the Lord Jesus for bringing us together and keeping us safe during our performance at the 1995 Polynesian Festival. Our thanks also to Mrs McLaughlan for supervising us during rehearsals. We are a very noisy lot! Our year started off with lunchtime and after-school rehearsals. We had forty-six students in the group and two leaders - Paraia and Aileen. Two weeks before the festival we felt we were making some sort of progress- learning the items was easy, but getting everyone to attend was not. Nevertheless, we performed on the day with ease, and took to the video cameras for Purest Form's video clip of their latest single "U Can Do It" (we won't say that Rita and Sulusi stole the camera crew's hearts...it was natural!). We had fun meeting the pop group and also the "what Now?" crew...and we even got to meet Dr Urban. We hope more students will join us in 1996.

Cook Island Group 1 995 The Cook Island Culture Group consisted of twenty-two keen students. Preparations began in February for the A.S.B. Maori and Pacific Island cultural festival. As there were no parents or Cook Island tutors available to tutor the group, Angelina Tarai, one of our students, volunteered to lead, enabling the group to stay together. Angelina contributed much time and effort to bring our students to performance level. Her devotion and skills were much appreciated. The group's performance at the festival was of a good standard. However, a minor hitch occured with a downpour of rain and a problem with the sound system, but our students continued undaunted. I was proud to be part of the group, knowing that they gave one hundred per cent and always did their very best. 49

Badminton Manurewa High entered 6 teams in the Counties Interschool Competition held on Tuesday nights at Papakura Badminton Hall. The season, which extended from March to September was unusually long due to the large number of teams that entered this year. Our teams showed great commitment and determination. Both the Senior Boys and the Senior Girls Teams went from strength to strength eventually winning the Counties Interschool Competition. The Boys BI and the Girls BI teams came 1st in their respective divisions. The B2 teams, made up of mainly third formers, showed some potential and with practice could emerge as winning teams. Many thanks to the captains who so ably managed their teams. Congratulations to Geoffrey McCarthy, winner of the Boys Single competition and Sarah Aiken, winner of the Girls Singles Competition.

FIRST ELEVEN GIRLS SOCCER REPO' 1995 The 1995 Girls soccer season was a relatively quiet one. We started the season with a young team including only 4 or 5 seventh form girls. The new recruits proved excellent replacements for the girls lost at the end of last year. Our first game was on April 26th against a strong Wesley team. We were very pleased to commence the season with a 0 - 0 draw against a team of that calibre. Catherine Sharpley was appointed captain and performed creditably in this position till she left school in Term 2. Carolina Tiumalu was appointed captain for the rest of the season Ind also proved a capable and popular team leader. The 1st XI Girls played 9 competition matches in 1994 for 4 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses leaving them in second place on the final result table. The Manukau A grade competition was extremely competitive this season. Our biggest defeat was by two goals against traditional rivals Pukekohe (eventual winners of the A grade competition). Our biggest victory was a 7 - 0 win over Edgewater College. Over the whole season the team scored 16 goals and conceded just 7, indicative of the excellent defensive qualities of this years team. Jennifer Robertson displayed an impressive array of soccer skills throughout the season as goalkeeper and outfield player. She deservedly won selection to the Auckland Girls Under 15 team continuing a long line of representative players from this school. Jennifer was also selected for the Auckland composite side

that competed at the Na Secondary Schools Tournarr Hamilton during the A holidays. The defence proved to h best defensive unit seen in years. Girls 2nd XI Soccer Team This years team started with a squad of 16 girls of which only two had previously turned out in the Manurewa colours. Although suffering from a lack of match experience at the beginning of the season, none were short of enthusiasm which was often praised by referees, parents and the opposition. As the season progressed all players improved in skill and fitness which allowed the team to become very competitive against other teams of who had played together for many seasons. The team was lead by Rachel in the centres. In attack Tracy Crowe, Amy Rowland, Aroha McGeady and Shannon Coe showed their class while Kezia Colbert, Kelly Vause, Rachel McWilliams, Raylene Longley and Sarah Bertram were active in midfield. In defence Tracy McNamara, Mellisa Barry, Andrea Jones and Hoana Parangi provided good resistance. Thanks also to Sunita Swami, Jasmine Jones, Lisa, Julie, and Annette who played in a number of different positions for the team.

I NDOOR SOCCER GIRLS During Term III 1994 a group of girls joined the indoor soccer team, for the majority of us it was our first experience at competitive soccer, and for some their first time at even playing. Being inexperienced as we were we would have been happy with a couple of wins and a few narrow losses. But to our surprise we were up there with the two best teams, Baradene and Selwyn, who were the only two teams we lost against. I attribute our great success to Toaila Pasi who had amazing defence and exceptional attacking skills. Also to a team of girls who went out each week not to win, but to play together for the fun of it with winning as a nice bounce. At the end of the season we were third in an eight team league which included Papatoetoe, Howick, Pakuranga, James Cook and Macleans. Senior Mixed Indoor Soccer For the last three years Manurewa has competed in the Secondary Schools Indoor Soccer League held at the Panmure Youth Centre, during term three. 1994 was another successful year due to the fact that the team ended third out of the ten team competition. They were also awarded the Firestone Fair Play Award for best sportsmanship throughout the competition. Members of the team were: Aaron Smith, Jeremy Rowland, Matthew Winiata, Brad Rudsits, Alex McDonald, Brett Copley, Samantha Copley, Kathryn Matete, Toaila Pasi. Alex McDonald ended up as the second highest goal scorer of the competition. The team was captained by Aaron Smith. Matthew Winiata provided outstanding efforts in each game and Brad Rudsits was always good in the goal. Toaila Pasi was a tower of strength in every game, matching the top boy players in every respect. She won the Individual Fair Play Award , a most creditable achievement as many of the players were in the top youth league for boys. This year's team are already leading the competition with Jeremy Rowlands as captain and Kathryn Matete showing great form. With the team's previous experience, they could go on to qualify for the Auckland Zone Finals, but above all, again be top contenders for the Firestone Fair Play Awards. This year's team are: Jeremy Rowland, Aaron Smith, Matthew Winiata, Alex McDonald, James Davys, Brad Rudsits, Kathryn Matete, Carolina Tiumalu and Donna Cooper. Boys Tennis

Team Members this year included; Leighton Steele Tam Tran Paul Marshall Peter Simmons James Davys Nicholas Collis Sa Baas Sam Crowther Ion Narbey At the beginning of the year we were placed in the A2 division, a division which is second only to the premier Al. In both these divisions the standard of tennis is extremely high with many up and coming tennis players of the Future representing their school. Although we won some individual games, the standard of competition was such that no overall matches were won. In term 3 we entered the A3 division and at the time of writing the team had its first loss of the season, a narrow 4-5 defeat to Kings College. Overall it has been a successful with promising season performances from a group of committed and reliable team members.

st XI Girls Cricket

The first eleven girls cricket team had a very successful and eventful season this year. Our first game ended with a win by forty-seven runs and five wickets to Selwyn College. The rest of the games during the first part of the season followed the same pattern thanks to the able leadership of Sharon Tebutt who sadly has left the team to train for the Premier Women's team. Other stars of the team were: Farrah Lipsham and Melissa Pana who scared the opposition so much with their fast bowling that they opted for helmets, Debbie Bodle the resident loudmouth, Carolina Tiumalu our female version of Adam Parore, Maja Aspaas our opening wicket-taking bowler and occasional batswoman, and supporting players Dale Merrick, Terri Paul, Lisa Cumberlanu, fulieanne Bennett, Lisa Nicol, Debra James, Minal Rana and Hue Eng. We are currently leading our competition. Special thanks to Mrs Tebbutt who provided help with the transport, and to Miss Booker our wonderful coach.

SQUASH The senior boys' team had a good year in 1995 playing in the difficult Auckland Secondary Schools Squash competition. Playing in the Senior A division the team scored impressive wins against Auckland Grammar twice, Rutherford High twice, and James Cook. The team was ably led by its captain Kelvin Jones, playing in the number I position. His game has improved enormously this year and he scored some fine victories against talented opposition. Nick Collis and Tim Sealy窶認isher were always reliable team members and had their share of wins in the numbers 2 and

3 positions Nick has a great range of shots to his game and Tim's fitness was a great asset on the court. Adam Sangster was our number 4 player. His game improved as the season went on and he always fought hard in every game he played. He will develop into a fine player. Our thanks go to Glyn Turner and Chris Johanson who filled in for us when the team was short. They are keen players who will feature more prominently next year. Senior Boy's Cricket The school again entered a b cricket team in the South region competition in Secondary "A" grade. The played a total fo twelve ga during the season, two ga were non- competition ones. boys lost the two non-comp games and this made them determined to do well for remainder of the season. H. won the previous year's final, boys wanted to do at least as during the season and this sh' up in the general attitude d both practices as well as weekly games. Several bowlers. although not taking number of wickets, did contain the opposition an their scores down. Having the most points during the we played in the final a Papakura High School, they first and were all out for fi runs, in reply Manurew School scored the runs re with the loss of only one and this took only ten overs. Girls Softball Our Manurewa High School Girls Softball team proved to be a motivated, well turned out team who represented the school well. They were all enthusiastic, and experience ranged from Counties Representatives to beginners, but as a team they worked well. We played in a weekly competition at Mangeres' Lion Red Ball Park, which was unfortunately more often than not cancelled. The highlight of our season was playing in a tournament at Albany against schools from all over Auckland. Again, our team stood out as being well organised and responsible. We had a fun day and ended the season after our competition game the next day by a visit to Georgie Pie - enjoyed by all.

Fourth Grade Rugby

One of our most impressive wins was on our own school grounds. One sunny lunchtime we challenged the staff to a game of Softball. This drew a big crowd and was a fun game. For the first time in 5 years the school team defeated the staff in a closely fought, good humoured game.

This has been a bit of a 5 season for us as we came up wins against Waiuku, Pukek Papakura, St Stephens Weymouth. We were actual second place for most of season until the bad wea stopped our Tuesday pract Our best win would probably h to be our second game again Stephens. We won this gam the last few minutes. We I against Tuakau, Waiuku Rosehill College who were winners of this season. During season some players, such myself, were thrust into posit' in which they had never pla before, but the boys still pla good football. In fact we ha whole front row of locks at stage! Term 3 is restricted to juniors only. so with a mix of students from the beginning of the year and new players we participated in the competition. The students again, made the school proud with their appearance, attitude and sportsmanship.

Rugby 1st XV The 1995 season was the least successful for the school for a number of years. The first round saw big losses to St Stephens, the national champions, but an improved showing against Wesley kept the score very close. Unfortunately the team lacked consistency in its performances and consequently never put together a concerted team effort over the season. However, there were very close games against James Cook High School and Papatoetoe High School. Those team members to play consistently were: Mark Larsen, Paraia Toi, Britz Broederlow, David Monk, Robert Pearse, Stephen Marshall, Geoff McCarthy and Anzac Lutelu.

2nd XV Rugby I remember the morning well, 'Mr Wild could you please look after our Rugby team' Rees Logan bellowed. Little did I know what was to follow ........... The first game we played was awesome, we absolutely blitzed the opposing team and our future looked rosy indeed. The next game away though proved to be a difficult equation . Sixteen rather large students, a game away in Papakura and two small cars. You don't need to be a mathematician to realise the obvious problems.

You also don't need a degree in Physics to calculate the fact that six large males in a small Honda CR-X ( including three in the boot I is going to have a pronounced effect on the cars handling! I winced at every left hand turn , the boys had to lean to minimise the damage that the wheel arch was having on the tyre ! The rear right hand wheel was starting to smoke as we reached our destination and I now have extra treadlines where there shouldn't be. Anyhow, we always got to our games safely and on time and the boys who turned up always gave 100%. Thankyou to Mr Peake who helped out with transport and kept the uniforms in first class order.

The success the team has achieved was highlighted by the outstanding individual performance of our captain Joshua Stowers. Every so often in a sport there is some player who comes along who stands out above the rest. In the world of rugby league, Bradly Clyde, Laurie Dayly and Brad Titler spring to mind. At school boy level in New Zealand there is no denying that Josh is in a league of his own. This is reinforced by the large number of awards presented to Josh throughout the season and culminating in his selection as captain of New Zealand u/17s and as vice captain of the Inaugural New Zealand Secondary School team . Josh displays a maturity as a footballer well above his sixteen years. He is already the focus of many talent scouts and their cheque books! But for now he is staying put and will hopefully be leading the MHS 1st XIII to bigger and better things in 1996. Congratulations Josh for a year well done.

RUGBY LEAGUE 1995 was the year the Auckland Warriors entered the Winfield Cup. It was also the inaugural year of a full Auckland Schoolboy 1st Thirteen Rugby League competition. Thanks to the efforts of Steve and Debbie Stowers, Manurewa High School was able to enter the competition which was to be played on a Wednesday afternoon every week. Alcan Industries generously donated a full set of Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs gear for the season. Steve Stowers offered his valuable time to coach the side and Debbie provided managerial support. Auckland U15 representative hooker Josh Stowers was a natural choice to captain the side. Initial musters produced a large training squad of thirty players, which was cut to twenty for the preseason match against De La Salle. The match against De La Salle proved that the talent was available at MHS. De la Salle had four Auckland representatives and had been training for several months and were expecting to win by a large margin. In the end they only won by twelve points against an extremely makeshift trial team This performance really set the standards for the rest of the season. The most significant point to come out of the season was the closeness of the matches. We lost all our first four games by just 2 points. In all four matches we managed to score more tries than the opposition, but these were usually out wide to our exciting wingers Henry Faafili, Romel Simpson, and later in the season, Daryl] Tuffey, thus making it hard for conversion kicks! The closeness of the competition is perhaps best shown in the game against old rivals James Cook. We managed to lead for the entire match until the final 20 seconds when lames Cook scored after winning a tighthead scrum (a rarity in Rugby League) and converting

to win by 2 points. So near and yet so far! The highlight of the year was the much awaited match against St Paul's College who are Australasian Schoolboy Champions and undefeated in three seasons of Rugby League. Played at St Paul's in front of a vocal home crowd which included junior Kiwi coach John Ackland, and chairman of the New Zealand Rugby League, Richard Bolton, St Paul's initially poured on the points and were 20 nil after half an hour. They thought that this was going to be another easy victory but did not count on the spirit and pride that had developed in the MHS Ist XIII as the season had progress. Suddenly Shannon Blair and big Shaun Poga started to make yards up the middle in the forwards, ably supported by second rower Lucas Heta. We managed to give Josh and the backs some quality ball. St Paul's sat back in disbelief and watched us score three consecutive tries. Some fierce tackling by centres Andrew Williams and Uoka Sagapolutele held St Paul's out until the final five minutes of the match. The final score of 34-16 to St Paul's did not reflect the true closeness of the match. The way the boys walked off the field with their heads held high is a true reflection of what this team has achieved. Special mention must go to Josh Stowers who led the team superbly, to half back Ray Ball who improved with every game and to our Auckland representatives, Henry Faafili, Lucas Heta, Dave Tekoni, David Paleilei and Daniel Ikitule. Also thanks to Mr Thomson for allowing us to take part in the competition and Mr Hornblow for allowing Ist XV players Paraia Toi, David Monk and Peri Stephens to take part in several matches. A fairly inexperienced group at the beginning of the season, they trained well and displayed a willingness to learn. The season started with some early season losses, but about mid-way through the season, the team realised what commitment and effort was required, and they started to play up to their ability. During this time they had a very close loss to the eventual winners of the competition, and drew some very complimentary remarks from the opposition coach and the referee. (Fortunately the game continued to be played in a very good spirit in spite of one of our players rugby tackling one of the opposition while she had the ball. We won't mention Ngaire's name for fear of embarrassing her.) 59

Maree Allen of Form 3 was placed first in grade 4 rhythmics preliminaries. In the finals held on October 5, at the ASB Stadium, she gained first place in Grade Four. Also in rhythmic competition Wayne Laker was placed third in the Boys A grade finals and Micheal Bishop was fifth (just one point behind) . Steven Morris won the Boys B grade competition and Bradley Smith was placed second. We entered a tumbling team for the first time this year. Members of the team were Wayne Laker, Michael Bishop, Marcus Leslie, Steven Morris, Tim Sealy—Fisher and Julie Crowe. Julie Crowe gained third place in the club B grade for girls. In club A grade, Micheal Bishop and Wayne Laker were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. Our three other competitors in boys B (non club) were Marcus Leslie,Ist, Steven Morris, 2nd, and Tim Sealy—Fisher, 4th. All in all, a most successful day for our school — thanks to a dedicated and talented team.

Trampoline The Auckland Secondary Schools Trampoline Competition The purchase of a new stringmat competition trampoline one week before the Auckland Secondary Schools competition, greatly improved our team's confidence and performance. We entered one boys' team and one girls' team this year and although numbers were down on previous years, our results were excellent. All members managed to get into the finals and our Boys' team won the team event. Marcus Leslie came first in elite men's grade and Michael Bishop was first in men's A grade. The winning team consisted of : Marcus Leslie, Michael Bishop, Brendon Riggs and Tim Beale. The girls' team were: Stacy Gibbs, Maria Leslie, Julie Crowe and Amanda Potts.

Parent TeacherAssociation 1995 The 1995 Parent Teacher Association welcomed a number of new members onto the committee. The PTA decided that because of work commitments that most of us were experiencing that we would not be able to hold a major fundraiser this year. However, there would be the usual number of smaller fundraisers which we hoped would still keep funds coming in but without the huge workload that a major fundraising event demands. We have raised funds steadily through a number of minor fundraising activities through the year. The most successful of these was the Family Portraits which were taken in September. The photographer took a set of 3 portraits of each family who made a booking during the weekend and ten days later he was back to offer the complete set to the subjects.

We were very impressed with the quality of the portraits which were priced very competitively and we know that the subjects were also very happy with the results because only about a half a dozen sets were unsold. It is planned to invite them back next year as both a fundraiser for the PTA and as a service to the parents of our school. The uniform shop has operated throughout the year in conjunction with the School's administration and provided a small but steady income. It provides avaluable service to our community by recycling uniforms at very reasonable prices. The PTA hosted the candidates for The Manurewa High School Board of Trustee elections in Term 2 and were very impressed with the quality of all the candidates who

addressed the parents and outlined their goals for The School during the next term of office of the Board. The PTA congratulate the successful Board candidates and look forward to working with them . One of our more pleasant tasks this year was to provide the South Auckland Science Fair judges with a morning tea/lunch. Our enthusiastic supporters supplied so much food that we were able to provide morning tea to many of the Science Fair entrants as well as the judges, which was much appreciated by the students. I would like to extend on behalf of the PTA Committee our thanks to all the parents, pupils and staff who have supported us during the year and extend the Compliments of the Season to you all.
