Principal's Message It has been a number of years now since the of introduction Tomorrows Schools. One of the benefits of this new direction in education has been the ability of schools to develop their own special character. I firmly believe that our school has achieved this, as The Manurewa High School is now known nationally for its philosophy of education which is centred on academic achievement and the pursuit of excellence. Our main goal has been to prepare students for major qualifications in all subjects of the curriculum. The school has continued to encourage students to enter examinations and academic competitions, and every year the number participating, and the results achieved, continue to improve. This year the school has been very proud of the academic successes of so many of our students. Every emphasis is also given to sport and cultural activities within the school. My thanks to the staff who continue to provide the basis for the opportunities that students have at our school. Achievements and involvement in sport and cultural activities reflect the success in the academic areas.

Zealand Educational Business Partnership Trust. The visitors were most impressed, not only by the work being done in the school industry links area, but also by the teaching methods and inter-action displayed between staff and students. This visit has given a boost to our school-industry links. The quality of the teacher student relationships is reflected in the pages of this magazine - not only by the successes of the students in so many areas, but also in the vast range of activities that they are able to participate in. The encouragement in learning and participation is outstanding, and I thank the staff for their tremendous effort. My thanks also to the magazine editors, Mrs R Chan and Mrs H Kilgour and their team of staff and students involved in the production of this year's magazine. They have captured the tremendous vitality and enthusiasm of the school and the diversity of school life. New for

In our large school of 1650 students, student leadership continues to maintain a special focus. The prefects team, ably lead by Lisa Spasic and Mark Todd, have provided the inspiration for others in the senior school. The peer support and self management programmes are now an integral part of our school, and enable our 450 third formers a smooth transition into the school at the start of the year. Many students have also been involved in service areas, such as the cultural, environmental and sports councils. Your contribution has been much appreciated. One of the highlights during the year was a visit to our school by the Dame Governor General, Catherine lizard and a group of business leaders from the New 2

this year is the inclusion of class photos, one of the initiatives made by this year's very able student representative on the Board of Trustees, Anthony Mills. Finally, my thanks to all groups and individuals who have supported oui school so well during the year. Ir particular the Board of Trustees the senior administration, the Parent Teacher Association and the Past Pupils Association. Youi guidance and assistance has beer most appreciated. Staff Notes 1994 At the start of the 1994 school year many new staff members were welcomed to The Manurewa High School. In positions of responsibility were: Mr R Perkinson, Chemistry Mrs A Satyapal, Experience Unit and Mr N Weeks, HOD Music. Taking up full time positions were: Mrs G Ashton, Food & Textiles Technology, Ms E Forstner, Art, Mrs K Farrell, Learning Adjustment Department, Mrs C Osborne, Social Studies/Geography, Ms R Roxburgh, Mathematics, Ms S Webb, Music, Mr J Wilson, Graphics & Technology. Taking up part time positions were : Mrs V Carruthers, Food & Textiles Technology, Mr R Chesney, Physical Education, Miss G McLean, Wordprocessing, Mr L Govender, Science, and Mrs E Washer, English. Returning to the staff were Ms V Collings, Accounting/ Economics, Mrs P Murdie, Learning Adjustment Department, Mrs N Sumer, Science. Part way through term one Mrs S Impey left on maternity leave and her position was taken up by Miss J Patterson. At the end of term one we farewelled the following staff members: Mrs C Woolaston, English, who took maternity leave, Mrs K Farrell who took up a primary teaching position, and Ms G Maclean who took up a full time position at another secondary school.

Also at the end of term one our school nurse, Mrs C Anderson left to take up a full time nursing position at Middlemore Hospital. Mrs Anderson had been with us for many years, and provided a valuable service to staff, students and families within the area. Mrs J Collins, Office Assistant left at the end of June and her position was taken up by Mrs L Wallace after mid term break.

At the commencement of term two the following staff members took up positions: Miss L Boyle, Wordprocessing, Miss A Thomas, English, Mr S Gopal, Learning Adjustment Department. Also commencing at this time was the new school nurse, Mrs C Pritchard who came to us from Tangaroa College.

Staffing remained fairly stable throughout the rest of the year. At the time of writing this report the following staff members have indicated their intention to leave: Mrs C Hayward, Learning Adjustment, Mrs C Woolaston, English, and Miss J Patterson. Mrs G Ashton is taking up a position at Penrose High School, Mr D Bargh, Form Level Dean and Careers Advisor is taking up a position as Assistant to HOD Mathematics at Auckland Grammar, Mrs R Schanzer is taking one year's maternity leave. To those staff members who are leaving, and any others, our grateful thanks for your contribution to the school while you were with us, and we wish you every success for the future.

TEACHER EXCHANGES Miss Kazue Takeda This is the fourth time that I have come to New Zealand. I came twice when I was a university student, came back three years ago as a Japanese teacher, and this year under the JAPAN FOUNDATION TEACHING ASSISSTANT PROGRAMME. When I came the first time I fell in love with New Zealand. The big, blue sky, beautiful farmland, friendly people... everything was new to me. Now, I like New Zealand as much as Japan, and I like to say that New Zealand is my second home country. (I have New Zealand parents as well!) I have enjoyed working in Manurewa High School very much, and have learned a great deal here - especially from the students. All are so special and beautiful. Sometimes I cannot stop staring at the students in class because they are so beautiful. It hurts me to see the students who have just emigrated to New Zealand living in a foreign country and having a hard time particularly because of the language difficulty. But, at the same time, it makes me very happy to see students who used to have those same problems now helping and supporting the new immigrant students and sharing their experiences. In the Japanese classes New Zealand students, Polynesian students, Asian students and students of other nationalities sit together in groups and work together. Nobody cares about their nationality or the colour of their skin. I think it is an ideal world! I am very lucky and very happy to part of the classes. I appreciate all those people who have given me the opportunity to work in Manurewa High School, and would like to thank the staff for being so kind and friendly. I will miss everyone and everything here. SAYOONARA

DUX & PROXIME ACCESSIT Congratulations to Connie Lowe of the seventh for who has been named Dux of Manurewa High Scho for 1994. For the first time in five years the award has bee given to a student who has pursued an ar programme. Connie has been involved in Amnesty Internation the Cultural Council, the International Club, th Environmental Council and she has been a Pe Support Leader. She is also a 1994 ASB Scholar. In 1995 Connie will be taking a journalism course A.i.T. Congratulations also to Hsin-Yee Lin of form seve who was awarded the Proxime Accessit prize, Hsin-Yee has followed a mainly science course study and intends going to University in 1995. While at Manurewa High School Hsin-Yee has been member of the International Club, the Cultural Counc and Peer Support Leader and in 1994 as ASB Schola

1994 PREFECTS The Prefects of 1994 have been dedicated team, who havE successfully provided a strong lint between the junior and senia school throughout the year. The leadership skills, team buildinc exercises and basic getting-to know-one-another seminars, begar with a four day trip to Rotorua. No only did we learn to work effectivel) as a team, but our tennis, ten pir bowling and luge riding skill developed exceptionally well. M Thomson showed us all how tc 'ride the road' leaving most of u! coughing in his dust, except fo Marina McCartney scatterer across the road, literally eating the dust. We au however, had a grea time and learnt a lot from ou experiences. Mark and I would Like to thank the 1994 Prefects for a great job thi: year. They have not only share( their talents on stage (as Powe Rangers!) at camp with the thirc formers and behind the scenes with the organising of the school ball but have also carried out theh duties with enthusiasm anc commitment. I am sure some students won'. forget the very successful, highly technical 'smoking' blitzs carries out by Prefects hiding in bushes using long range telephoto lenses (two guesses what Board Trustees member was involved it that raid!) The Science Roadshow Riveting entertainment! Excitement, adventure, danger lurking around every corner! (Well, not quite.) You see, the Science Roadshow was something else. Something educational, something enlightening, BUT more exciting than Friday, last period. Have you ever wanted to lie on a bed of nails, get so dizzy you think that you will be sick, or drive a penguin over someone's feet? Well, at the Roadshow you can do all this and more. The bed of nails was a most interesting creation. Getting up the courage to actually lie down on the thing takes a bit of effort, but surprisingly enough, it was really quite comfortable. There was also a chair that spins around. First of all, you sit down, and are spun about by some obliging assistants. You can go faster or slower by putting your arms out or pulling them in. (But please watch out for the assistants, they really do want to keep their heads!)

Another exhibit was a remote control penguin, which was rather heavy,(as my feet found out) that you could drive around a gameboard. A computer was hooked up to the penguin, and it told you if you hit anything on the gameboard. (It was just like playing Battleships, only with a very heavy, foot-squashing penguin!) And the list goes on. There was a magnetic T.V. screen, and by putting a magnet up to it and moving it around, (the magnet not the T.V screen) you could make these excellent patterns. There was a huge microscope complete with slides, on a handy turnabout wheel. If you have ever wanted to see what toothpaste looks like close up, here's your chance! After we had had about 45 minutes trying out all the displays, we were treated to very interesting show. Have you ever seen liquid Nitrogen turn to steam the minute it hits a desk? Or you know that ad for Mobil Motor Oil where it says:

"This is a real rose," and the rose is so cold that it crumbles up like it was made of porcelain? Ever wondered if it was true? We were given a demonstration, and it really is! And chemical reactions galore! No, don't go away. These chemical reactions are just a bit different than the ones you read about in textbooks. By mixing different chemicals, the demonstrators were able to make all sorts of weird and wonderful things appear in bottles. first of all, there were the colour changes. There was a liquid in a bottle and by pouring a different chemical in, the colour of the liquid changed. There were many more different things in the bottles, and many more things that actually came out of the bottles. And all the little primary school kids that were there were impressed. Okay, well even some of us were impressed. Oh all right. Even I was impressed. It was pretty neat. So, if you missed this year's Science Roadshow, and are thinking of going next time, go for it! BAYER SCHOLARSHIP 1994 This school was fortunate to win the BAYER SCHOLARSHIP this year. This award is given to the 10 top science schools in New Zealand. The scholarship included $2000 of equipment, SATIS worksheet packs and the opportunity for one of our students to apply to have all university fees paid for as an undergraduate [approximate value $4500]. Rebecca Hassett was chosen as the school candidate and won a scholarship. Congratulations to Rebecca, and a challenge to all students to achieve the same.

SCIENCE FAIRS 1994 This was another exciting year with major prizes taken by Manurewa High Schoolpupils. Competition within individual classes, and interclass levels was strong and it was difficult to select the top 20 projects. At the South Auckland Science fair our school dominated the prizegiving, receiving more prizes than any other school and 18 exhibits went on to MOTAT. In the Auckland Science Fair Nicole Thomson, Raylene Longley, Merrin McCreadie, Lara Murphy and Becky Hassett gained first prizes; Nathaniel Savage and Trevor Hunter gained second prizes; Zoe Murphy and Stephanie McCallum gained third prizes. Nine other highly students gained commended. Also Lara Murphy and Becky Hassett won a special prize to go whale watching at Kaikoura, and were selected to represent Auckland at the National Science Fair, where they also gained a special award. This school has every reason to be proud of science achievements this year, thanks to the efforts of every student who completed a science fair project.

ENVIROSCHOOL In the second week of the August school holidays I participated in 'Enviroschool' at Lincoln University. I was one of approximately 140 students from the tip of the North Island through to the bottom of the South Island. As soon as we arrived our Mostly our programme began. programme was made up of half hour lectures on various environmental issues like climate change, ozone depletion, indoor pollution and the Antarctica Environment. On Tuesday, after about 15 lectures the organisers took us on a trip - to the Sewerage Treatment Plant. While we were here we learnt how our sewerage was treated and discharged - all this before lunch. On Wednesday we had an all day trip to the Mountains. The scenery was beautiful and our bus driver was so overwhelmed by the beauty of it all he missed the turn off and by the time he had realised his mistake we were 24km out of town in the wrong direction. After a quick U-turn, a rear collision with a truck, some friendly advice and directions from a passerby and we arrived at our destination - an hour late - but better late than never. While we were at Mt Somer's Sheep Station, it snowed and for many of us, especially the Aucklander s, it was the first time we had seen snow and we had great fun stuffing snow down each other's shirts. Thursday was a day to decide what options to do. We could choose two from plants, CO2, fish, soil and other options. These are what was known as workshops and they lasted for an hour and a half. After these were done we had the afternoon to ourselves, many people explored the campus, while others packed their bags. Friday arrived and after five more lectures 'Enviroschool' was finished (until 1995).

BP SCIENCETECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE Manurewa High School was named the top Auckland Secondary School in the annual BP Technology Challenge this year. The six Manurewa High School students bettered two adult teams to take second place overall. Held at the YMCA, the engineering competition involved 30 schools and the aim was to build the best structure for a particular function using a limited selection of materials. There were three building challenges: a windmill, emergency shelter and a way of ferrying berries across a river - all within set times. Head of Science, Mrs Howard, was ecstatic with our success which she put down to lateral thinking and innovation. The team learnt co-operation, and team effort was displayed throughout the evening. All involved thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The six students were: Sara Hopkins, Craig Pretty, Jason Clements, Stacy McEntee, Anthony Cribb and Scott Crickett. Sara Hopkins 4MR

Parasailing This was an activity which enlivened students enthusiasm and appreciation of science topics. The aim of including this topic/activity was to hopefully spark the students' imaginations into realising that science, maths and engineering are extremely useful subjects which play a huge part in making our world run. The session began with a class discussion on the theory of pulleys, mechanical advantage and how they were used in everyday activities. Then, using pulleys, the students were given the task of working out how to connect up a pulley system in order to transfer the large, but slow, pulling power of the class into high speed. Having done the "ground work" the students then moved outside to put their ideas (and the theory they'd learned) into practice. Using a parasail canopy they were able to pull one another up into the air. Shrieks of excitement were heard all over the school and that brought out other students and staff to watch. The activity took two hours and all the students who participated, (even the reluctant ones!), thoroughly enjoyed themselves they hadn't realised that science could be such fun!!! AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION 1994 MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS COMPETED WITH OVER HALF A MILLION STUDENTS FROM N.Z., AUSTRALIA, AND THE PACIFIC BASIN IN THIS CHALLENGING COMPETITION. 160 students from all levels entered this year, including a sight impaired student for the second year running. It was pleasing to see that 40% of the students competing were successful. 53 students gained a Certificate of Credit , while 9 students gained a Certificate of Distinction, which placed them in the top 16% TOP STUDENTS The best student was Matthew Savage, 6HN, who had the highest overall score and made the least number of mistakes. He achieved a 98 percentile ranking.

MATHEX REPORT On the 13th June, 1994, four teams from our school went to the Interschool Area Mathex competition at Rosehill College. A mathex competition involves solving mathematical questions in a group of four people, one of whom is the runner. When the group has solved the problem, the runner takes the answer to the marker and brings back the next question [if the answer was right].

SPEECH CONTESTS A record number of finalists at most Form levels made a difficult challenge for the judges but an interesting competition for classes privileged to be audiences. Speakers researched their topics which covered a wide range of worthwhile issues. They used a variety of public speaking techniques. Kids Who Read Succeed Have you read any good books Have you heard of Paul lately? Jennings, Sheryl Jordan, Maurice Gee, John Marsden or Robert Did your brain spin O'Brien? when you read the last chapter of Were you puzzled or Rocco"? shocked at the end of "Letters From the Inside"? Did you feel sick after "Spaghetti Pig—Out"? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions you are probably a keen reader. Perhaps you are one of the hundreds of third formers who has achieved a Reading The Certificate in recent years. students who use our Reading Room and Library as part of the reading programme gain a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction from reading. Through books they are exposed to new ideas , unusual experiences and different prespectives on the world.

But, that's not all! Educators all over the world agree that the ability to read well is crucial to success at school. Students who read frequently and widely have more extensive vocabularies and broader general knowledge than those who do not. It really is true that KIDS WHO READ SUCCEED. 17

Form Three Debating The two form three teams learned the demanding skills of debating enthusiastically and quickly. Since there were several people in each team, only a few had more than two out of the four debates possible, but all provided support in spirited discussions at the planning stage, as chairpeople or as timekeepers. Team 1, working with Miss Washer, won two of their debates. James Tunnel! and Michael Ball were both judged best speaker, as were Jannai Tantrum and Kylie Wapp in Team 2. Team 2, working with Mr Finlay, won one out of three debates against fourth form teams. The moots given were not always popular with the teams, but they rose to the challenge. When we debated that "we need more time to do nothing", we felt we needed more time to learn to debate, and the two teams challenged each other before we went out to battle strangers. Next, we debated that "the place for knockers is outside the door"; both teams won our cases. "Being lively is better than being lovely" was much harder to argue. But the hardest was the last. Debating for and against the moot "that Noddy was a SNAG" stretched our enthusiasm. In the event Team 1 was able to prove the affirmative, but Team 2 failed with the negative, which goes to prove

Senior Debating This year our two teams were entered in the senior round of the Auckland Debating Association competition. Our objective was to win three (at least!) of the four preliminary debates which would enable us to go to the finals. Unfortunately, our adversaries were too accomplished, and Mrs Kilgour's fourth form team and Mrs Sanson's 5th form team won one debate in four. Nevertheless, we all profited from the experience of dealing with some very challenging moots — "That human—kind is the next dinosaur" to mention one. Debaters in Mrs Kilgour's team were Sarah Hopkins, Beverly Aerenga and Romona Henare. In Mrs Sanson's group were: Nicola Geddes, Anna Ngyen, Alex Rose, Julie Melville Smith, Linda Bulloch and Teresa Walker.

FORM 6 and 7 Debating The advanced debating team made up entirely of sixth forr with a temporary ringin of Matt Lawrence, an Australian exchE student. We took part in Auckland Debating Associa South East region advar competition. It was a frustrating year as tw our four debates were won default and the other two narn lost. But we enjoyed the pre ation and the excitement intellectual duelling. The moots this year were : That Mrs Bobbit was Righ against Howick — won by deft And we had a winning argurr that was affirmed by subseqL events in the US. That we should toast the Quee against St Kentigerns — where tf unusual definition threw us guard. That the family should celebrated — against Sacred He We felt we had a very good ca but the adjudicator did not agree That we should thank the snake against Macleans, where we we prepared to get all philosophical! did not have the chance. Many thanks to the debators, give much time to preparing tn arguments.

So no semifinals this year, but we are inspired. And when the teams meet again for the last meeting this year we are going to engage in cutand-thrust over an earth-shaking moot such as "the place for Noddy is outside the door", "debating beats dating" or "lively people have more time to do nothing."

AUCKLAND GEOGRAPHY QUIZ REPORT On Thursday the 28th July, Miss Briggs, Mrs Osborne and I look the Manurewa High School Geography Carter, Quiz team (Jordan Nathanael Savage, Jason Whale and Brad Rudsits) to the annual Auckland Region Geography Quiz. We had spent three weeks during lunch hours preparing for the quiz. The team responded to the I challenge with enthusiasm and good humour. The quiz this year was held at the Hobson Wharf Conference Centre. Approximately 30 schools from all over the Auckland metropolitan area took part in front of a large audience. The teams went through a preliminary round lasting an hour and half to determine the four schools that would go on to contest the finals. Each team had to complete geographic questions and skills tasks within a set time period, under intense pressure. Manurewa High School performed creditably during this phase of the competition never dropping below third place. The final results for the first round were Rangitoto on 85%, Manurewa High School on 80%, Kings College on 77% and Papatoetoe High School on 75%.

The teams were all within four points of each other for the first three rounds. Much to our delight and relief Kings College finished with a total of 7 points, Papatoetoe High School - 14 points, Rangitoto - 15 points and Manurewa High School were declared the decisive winners with a magnificent 40 points. The team were excellent ambassadors for the school and region. They showed the worth of a positive approach and diligent preparation. The team fully deserved the recognition given to them after their success against some very strong opposition. From the teachers' perspective it was very satisfying to win after making the finals in the previous two years, even if it did cost us lunch at McDonalds. C. Van Kralingen

SIXTH FORM GEOGRAPHY CAMP This year's Sixth Form Geography Camp was a huge success. By 8.30am we were off, listening to the harmonious tones of Cypress Hill while waiting anxiously until we arrived at camp, for we all knew these would be three very frantic days. At Waharau, we chose our cabins and started to settle in. But this was no picnic and soon after we were making cross sections and measuring water current speed. We had lunch then returned to finish the fieldwork. That night we were supposed to write up the results but neighbouring campers would still remember our antics. Thursday was big day for us. We went to the nearby beach for field work, the result of that being all except two of the 7 students being soaked with rainwater and the other two taking compulsory swims. Wednesday was when the assignment was handed in so everyone was busy all morning but after a delicious lunch cooked by our hosts Miss Briggs, Mr Perry and Mr V.K. showed how much they had been paying attention by handing out awards for nerd of the week, repent sinner and many more, no one missing out on these honours.

Japan- Takasaki Higashi Senior High School New ZealandManurewa High School 1994Tuesday 30th of August 1994 and there we were in Japan! We arrived as excited as we could ever be, boarded the bus that took us to meet our host families, arriving at Takasaki Higashi Senior High School at about 7pm that same evening. Looking out of the windows we could see our eager and happy families waiting to meet us. It was a pretty nerve-racking moment! We were all going to be in the homes of people we had never met before!! But, with a few bows and shakes of the hand, we were accepted as members of their families, and were treated as such.

Our first day of school the 1st September 1994, also happened to be the first day back after the summer holidays for the Japanese students. This first day of school was an experience for all of us. It was so different - not as strict as it would seem to be. The teachers and students were friendly, and interested in anything we could We couldn't believe teach them. how the kids were allowed to sleep during lessons! The students don't change class - they stay in the same room all day except for music which is compulsory and for physical education. The ten minute break between periods, allows teachers to move from one class to another. At school, shoes are not worn inside the building, they are removed in the "Genkan" or entrance hall and special slippers are then worn. The Japanese people, both students and teachers wear these slippers in school, so that the school is kept clean. There are no c . .aners - students and teachers clean their own school during a special period at the end of each day. The toilets in the school? Well what can we say? They were squat toilets! Japanese style! The hardest part was saying goodbye. We had made new friends and had been welcomed into their homes with open arms, and loving hearts.The day soon came to depart, and after many tears, hugs. and "sayonaras" we finally boarded the plane back to our own country again! We will miss them all so much, but we are sure that it was all worthwhile. We can't wait to go back.

American Field Scholars 1994 was a busy year for our exchange students. In January we farewelled Mark Taylor (6 CN 1993) who was awarded an AFS scholarship for a year in Germany. Sandra Peters has been selected for an AFS year in Brazil and leaves next February. Our Rotary Exchange student went to Queensland this year. Lindsay Renn (5DM) spent term I at school there, returning in term II with his Rotary "brother", Michael Lawrence (6 CN). Robert May (4 PY) has been selected as our Rotary Exchange student to Australia in 1995. During term II we farewelled Renee Marcoux (7 KL) AFS Quebec and Jamie Teahan (7 HW)Rotary U.S.A. We also welcomed Hanne Mustonen (6 PK) Rotary Finland and Kerstin Sautter (6 PK) AFS Germany. Tomomi Ishikawa (6 LS) spent eight weeks with us in term II on an Utsonimiya Twin City Exchange. Exchanges such as these add an important and valuable dimension to education. The young men and women who are chosen to represent their country overseas have a wonderful time, make many new lifelong friendships and develop all kinds of skills and attitudes which will strengthen them in the future. Choir At the beginning of term I . Mr Weeks and Ms Webb formed a new school choir, and within a few weeks over 80 students were meeting regularly to rehearse and perform. The choir has performed at several venues and concerts this year, including the schools "Variety Concert" in term 1, the Southmall Cultural Festival, various school occasions and to the elderly citizens of Manurewa. A highlight for the choir was participating in the Auckland Regional competition of the N.Z. Secondary Schools Choral Festival, held in the Auckland Town Hall in June. Although not placed, the choir gave an outstanding performance in the afternoon competition and were the only choir to receive a standing ovation at the evening concert.

Concert Band Due to a shortage of string players at the start of the year, the school orchestra was replaced with a Concert band which meets each Thursday lunchtime. Although still in the early stages, many new players have joined and all looks well for the future.

AUCKLAND CHORAL FESTIVAL Our school choir had been entered into the Auckland Choral Festival a competition between school choirs in the Auckland region.

Wonderful World'. After we had been applauded we sat back down in our seats with a feeling of accomplishment.

Since our choir had only started up this year, we didn't have any bright hopes of coming first but were at least aiming to have a good time and enjoy ourselves.

In the evening the concert took place where members of the public also came to watch. The town hall was full and everyone in the choir was buzzing with excitement because we had saved our best song to last â€” '0 Happy Day'. Everyone knew that we could sing it with such confidence and enthusiasm that we would surely win the audience over.

The day arrived. We left school after lunch and went to the town hall by bus. By this stage everyone was getting mixed feelings of excitement and nervousness. The competition went all day and we were on towards the end of the programme. After seeing some of the other choirs perform, our confidence had been somewhat lowered but we were all anxious to get up there and do our performance. Finally we were signalled to go out to the back room to assemble. Mr Weeks gave us a pep talk and then we filed into our lines and walked on stage. Our eight minute programme consisted of three songs: 'Song of Ruth','Play a Simple Melody',and 'What a

Once again, it was our turn to walk on to the stage and perform. Sure enough as we had predicted the audience absolutely loved our performance and gave us a standing ovation, it was a thrilling feeling we will never forget. In the newspaper the following day,in the review section, someone had written about the concert and labelled '0 Happy day' as the song of the evening". We'll all remember this day. 1994 YOUNG ENTERPRISE For 16 Sixth Formers, 1994 will be a year to remember. The 1994 Manurewa High School Young Enterprise team comprised of 15 females and one male, this in itself proved to be a problem - have you ever seen 15 strong willed and stubborn females argue? - Not a pretty sight! The Young Enterprise Scheme is run throughout the country and gives 6th form students a chance to gain business knowledge by running their own company. The first thing was to establish a Board of Directors, who attended a Board of Directors' seminar at the Regent Hotel. After deciding our first project was to be Gift Baskets for Mother's Day we went into action, ordering, buying, investigating and haggling for the best products and the most reasonable prices. A contact of Mrs Turner's kindly offered to package our Gift Baskets for us, sadly he passed away a few days later. Once the baskets were looking good and ready to go, we put them on the market (at school), the response was great and we had

sold out within two weeks. June saw the Mid Year Reports, chance for each Young Enterpri company to share their triump and mishaps with the other 60 or companies. This proved very ne wracking, but Trisha Barron, Eloi Strudwick, Angela Fisk, Kristi Eagleton and myself demonstrat: our public speaking talent showing those private schools hâ€˘ it is done. The next projects we Movie Tickets, Fathers D Chocolates, Hair Wax and L Gloss. Now that it's all finished we remember the good times, maki new friends and our interest' Assemblies, rather than the not good things, stress and the hui bills. CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP "Oh, Happy Day!" This is an old Negro Spiritual popularised by Whoopie Goldberg in Sister Act If, and it summed up a lot of what Christian Fellowship did and represented in 1994. Few will for get the sight of about 30 Christian Fellowshippers dressed in choir gowns, swaying s to the music and miming this song in our Easter Assembly. The two choir leaders, Toaila and Charlene were particularly impressive. The Easter Assembly production centred around the theme of despair which far too often in New Zealand leads to youth suicide, and the way a relationship with God through the Lord Jes Jesus Christ brings release from the trap of misery. Other memorable performances in this production were Chantelle as the Grim Reaper, Elenisi as a most convincing demon, and Lara as the girl whose messed up life is put back on track by Jesus.

CULTURAL COUNCIL REPORT Our inaugural meeting was held on 11 April with a large number of members from previous years as well as new recruits. During the year the staff convenors, Miss Briggs, Mrs Lal and Miss Gallot welcomed Mrs S Osborne and Miss A Thomas to the team.

We took the production over to Papatoetoe High School and performed it in a lunchtime to a jam-packed drama room. This Christian Fellowship has had a number or "regular" run by group members, mbers, and some interesting visitors and including musician David Grace, ex-Black Power lead leader Brian Kairau and Basketball Rapper Melvin Adams.

Thefirst duties involved ticket sales and Front of House for the "Musical Extravaganza" in Term One. We then helped Mrs Turner with refreshments for presenters at the Careers Evening, ending the second term with a full season of "Calamity Jane". Ushering at the prizegivings will be our main duties in Term 3, with some junior members starting their career at the Christmas Cracker Concert.

A sad feature of any school group is to lose great supporters when they come to leave school. Amongst those we are very sorry to lose this year are Lara, Becky, Toaila and Chantelle, all of whom have been tremendous supporters of the group for several years, and have been in the forefront of productions organisation. As this article is being written, daily rehearsals for yet another production written and directed by Toaila and Chantelle are under way.

Sincere appreciation to the following members who have served on the Council since Form 5 and combined with other activities such as Prefects or Production Connie Lowe, Kylie Sanderson, Rachael Butler, Lara Murphy, Becky Hassett, Hsin-Yee Natasha Matthews, Melissa Hermson, Sonya Kumar, Marina McCartney, Andrea Baxter, Cecilia Yandall, Seema Pande.

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL MAORI CLUB The year started early practising through the Xmas break for a new competition at Taumaranui on Manuariki Marae. With this early start it prepared us also for the Auckland Secondary Competitions at Mt Albert where the club was placed 7th. For the sixth year we attended the Koroneihana at Turangawaewae Marae, Ngaruawahia. We returned the Mahita trophy for the previous year and gained 3rd placing overall. New tutors were employed but it was sad to see 011ie and Sipi leave. They both contributed their time Aroha and devotion seeing the club to great heights. The new tutors are four ex-students of the club and school, Keliegh Henare, Kid Ann Dickson, Dwayne Hudson, and Conrad Herewini. Again we ascended to great heights and gained a first place in Te Kotahitanga Regionals for Manuariki, allowing us to compete early next year. We then travelled to the HokiangaPoroti - where we were accommodated at Te Aroha Marae. We entered the intermediate section gaining 1st Entrance, 1st= Waiata, 1st Whaikorero, 1st Poi, 2nd Action Song, 1st= Haka, 1st Exit, 1st Female Leader, and 1st Male Leader. This was a great experience for the club. Te Ahikaroa's calender was full and busy this year, we attended fundraising events, Mini - festivals, Opening of James Cooks High School whare, and many other exciting events. Many thanks are extended to our Whanau Support who guided the group. Their help was much appreciated. A special acknowledgement also to our 2 Kaea Renee Grace and Damon Heke Tena Korua. NGA TAUIRA AWHINA 0 MANUREWA E nga whaea, E nga matua, me nga rangatahi, Kia ora koutou katoa This has been a busy year for the MHS Junior Branch, Maori Women's Welfare League. Earlier this year, our President, Desiree Heke and member Jason Dickson were placed first in the MWWL Korero Whakataetae for Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) held at Ngati Otara Marae. At the annual National Conference for the MWWL, Desiree and Jason participated in the National Competitions and were placed third in their section. They were well supported by fifty rangatahi, kuia and koroua from all over Auckland. 26

Later in the year, I was nomin to attend a Regional Training II Wellington where I met our Nat' President, Areta Koopu. Our Rangitahi Hui was hel Pukekohe recently. It was opportunity to meet our Nat' President and Senior Representative, Whaea Hine Puru. ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL 94 The environmental council has had another successful year with some memorable working bees. The council consists of a group of senior students who gladly give up their free time to help improve the environment of the school.They have a voracious capacity for work and for the marshmallow puffs that are available at the afternoon teas. Its great to see students making an effort to put some thing back into the school. Most of the working bees involved trimming shrubs that are close to the buildings and grooming the gardens around the school. The highlight of our year was the organising of the trees for arbor day. We allocated a tree or shrub for every third form class. Due to the lack of rain at this stage of that stage of the year, it became a jarring experience in pre digging the planting holes in the clay soil. Members for 1994 are Janice Capstick, Nicole Thomson, Sandra Peters, Stephanie McCallum, Marina Cavanagh, Connie Lowe, Gillen Moroney, Bronwyn Steptoe, Natasha King. Cook Island Culture Group 1994 Kia Orana, This year the Cook Island Cult group was made up of twentyâ€”ei enthusiastic students keen perform and learn more about traditional dances and songs of Cooks. The group got under way February preparing and practis for the ASB Maori and Pac Island cultural festival at Mo Albert Grammar School. The group was tutored by Kavana, Mrs Moe and Mrs Pea who contributed much time a effort into bringing our students performance level. A highlight was the new costum designed and made by the tuts and students. These costu which carri ed the school col gave the group a highly prof ional look. The group's performance at festival was of a high standard the students coming together perform original songs and da based on the traditional for Paraia Toi led the group on s and his opening speech confidently delivered.

AUCKLAND MAORI AND POLYNESIAN FESTIVAL With 21 days to the performance, we were still unprepared, despite lack of sleep and hard practice nights. We are Manurewa High Schools Maori Cultural Group Te Ahikaroa (The Eternal Flames of Maoridom). All the Maori Cultural Groups and Pacific Island Groups around Auckland were, as performers would say, "Practice hard out" day and night to get things right for the big day.

Practices were mainly held at night between 6.00pm and 9.00pm. It may seem a short time but would be very agonising to the boys as they would be busy with the hake. If it was not done well enough they had to do it over and over again until it was right or until the tutor felt sorry for them and let them off. On the day of the performance male and female performers were busy putting on their Kakahu (clothing for the performance). They also applied the moko which was to show the inner self and to scare the living daylights out of others. When it is time for the group to perform the individual is expected to give 100% and to come off knowing they have done their best.

SCHOOL LIFE IN SPAIN

Amnesty International

Before I came to New Zealand, I had been in Spain for two years, and I had been to two different schools. One was a private school in a suburb of Madrid and the other was a girls' school in the centre of Madrid. The Spanish education system is very different from New Zealand. The primary school up to fourth formers are in the same school. Forms five to seven are at another school. Every subject is compulsory. We had to study Spanish, English, Science, History and Geography, and some schools had to study French as well. At the end of the term, which is June, every student had to sit an exam. If you did not pass it, you had to return to school earlier than the other students at the end of the long summer holiday, to sit the exam again. It is also a very big expense for the family as the consumer price index is very high in Spain. Every student has to buy their own textbooks and note books. All the books are very expensive there as are the uniform. And there are no second hand textbooks or uniforms for sale! It is fine if you go to a public school but the disadvantages are that the schools have very small properties and the buildings are all very old. Normally they are all in the city streets. If you wish to go to a private school, you have to pay a very high fee, including school fees, transport fees (normally they are in city suburbs) and lunch expenses. But all the equipment is new and the students have a better study environment. I feel that it is very lucky to study in New Zealand. Every school has a very good environment in which to study and students do not have many pressures. They have more leisure time, and you can start at a school at any time. In Spain you can only go into a school at the beginning of the year. If you miss the chance the school will not accept you and you have to wait for another year. Linda Juang

A large number of pupils, mainly seniors, enrolled in Amnesty International early in the year. Amnesty International is a movement that seeks to remind governments that they claim to abide by the Declaration of Human Rights. So we wrote polite letters protesting against imprisonment without trial, torture, "sudden disappearance", executions. Letters went to countries as different as China, Turkey, Iraq, Burma, Ethiopia, Guatemala, and a petition was also addressed to an embassy in Wellington. Letters work- governments hate to be shown up- and in at least one case we heard that our letters, among many others, were effective during the year. Sometimes it takes longer. One or two groups wrote up to six letters during the year. This is an involvement that calls for commitment. Our compliments to the active members.

ASIAN CLUB The Asian Club met for the Annual General Meeting at the end of February. Present were a large number of students from last year and a pleasing number of third formers. The barbeque was held on February 18th of March after school at the swimming pool. Mrs Taylor, Mrs Douglas and over 35 students Hsin-Yee, were welcomed by the new club president. There were lots of food, music and activities organised by the committee - all the ingredients for an enjoyable evening. Then there was also lots of rain. The weather had deteriorated rapidly and everyone was right in the middle of eating when the heaviest downpour recorded in 10 years - 10mm of rain between 4.00pm and 4.40pm (not organised by the committee) - hit us. Our mid-year activity on Saturday 29th July was indoors and very successful. We hired a large bus to take 47 students to Paradice Ice Skating Rink for the afternoon session. Another two cars and loads of senior students met us at the rink. Both activities were instrumental in introducing students to each other and many new friendships were formed. Not record rain, not bumps, bruises or blisters could stop the fun or growth in membership numbers. 29

1994 MANUREWA HIGH PREFECTS BALL

WOW BABE! Yes these words reverberate through my mind as I leave grandma's and casually saunter towards the car load full of eager teenagers awaiting my coming. As the glittering of the cars beamed fully into our eyes we all felt a sudden pang of discomfort. It was 7.45pm and our white 1972 station wagon had only just chugged past the Mt Wellington turn off. Thoughts of our endless hours of preparation frittered through the haze, attacking our sub—conscious as the steps for the samba and the fox—trot were desperately being rehearsed mentally. The total cost of the ball had dented not only our dwindling bank accounts but also sapped any chances of an all expenses paid trip to Hawaii. At the time of my arrival, the 1994 Winter Ball was in full flight and masses of perfectly adorned young women and men were ready to jive to the momentous beats of Mr D.J. Soaking in the awe— inspiring atmosphere, I found a table and

waited for the events to begin. Because others beside myself were determined to make an entrance eg. Jephoreena Coromandel, we waited for an extra half hour before any signs of organising were apparent, I appreciated the anticipation and I'm sure the mirrors in the toilets were utilised to their full extent. Like Hot Chocolate so plainly put it, "It started with a .... Head girl welcoming the congregation and smoothing the floor with good ole Mark (Headboy)., They soon parted and by the time the third song was on, the dance floor was full. The music played and princesses danced, laughter was resonant and it was obvious that the ball was CHOICE! Aaahhh yes, I must mention the FOOD! Tables emitting a flavorous aroma of joy, hot crumbed chicken legs with different types of oriental cuisine (eg. Chicken, Beef and Pork fried rice. Of course they catered for all, providing 20 types of salads for the diet conscious eg. 32

THE HOMAI RESOURCE ROOM The Homai Resource Room has been an integral part of Manurewa High School since 1966. It was established because of this school's proximity to Homai College, and is the only Unit of its type in New Zealand. Students who attend this Unit from other parts of New Zealand may board at Homai College.

7 HISTORY TRIP Early in March two minibuses and two cars full of eager 7th form history students left the school for a one-day trip to the northern Waikato to look at sites associated with the Waikato War of the 1860s. We started by looking at the site from which Redoubt Road is named. With a bit of imagination and the aid of an aerial photograph we could visualise a fort occupied by about 100 soldiers protecting Auckland from an attack that never came. Then we were off to Papakura to the museum, after which we visited the Anglican Church to find out about some of our English History topics. The vicar kindly gave us a talk on things Anglican, and dressed Anthony up in his robes in front of a candle-decorated altar which would have given Cromwell a coronary! The rest of the trip took in more redoubt and battle sites south as far as Rangiriri where we had dinner at the historic hotel. Some class members were so absorbed in their photography that they didn't hear the train coming on the Main Trunk line until the driver blew his horn and they nearly jumped off the bridge into the stream below.

PEER SUPPOR This year the Peer Supp programme was a great succ and enjoyed by a large number Form 3 and 7 students.

This year there have been 22 students visually impaired supported by the Unit.

This year 86 Form 7 stud committed themselves to training and leadership res sibilities (this was an increase o from 1993). The 3rd Form divided into groups of between and 12 students with a leader coâ€”leader per group. There 43 groups and each group h staff member to oversee activties.

The Resource Room is staffed by two teachers, Mrs Jill Farmer and Mrs Donna Cox, and several teacher aides.

The Peer Support groups weekly to discuss issues involve themselves in improvement activities.

The function of the Resource Room is to provide specialist support to the students who are visually impaired to enable them to achieve their full educational potential and meet their social needs within a mainstream school setting. This support involves braille instruction, keyboard skills, training in relevant technology, mobility, music, daily living skills and back-up teaching. Students are also provided with specialist resources such as braille transcription, large print material, taped material, tactile material, low vision aids and specialised computer equipment. The Resource Room also provides the students with an individual work space and storage for their equipment.

Most of the students survey the end of the ten sessions very positive comments about programme and enjoyed gettin know their Peer Support leads

The Resource Room staff liaise closely with the teachers of Manurewa High School, in order to anticipate the needs of the students. Over the years this has established a strong partnership between the High School and Homai College.

PTA REPORT The PTA in 1994 was a smaller committee than usual but has worked very hard to support the school. At the start of the year they used funds raised in 1993 to purchase the computer drawing plotter for the school and a Photovix machine which enables slides and negatives to be viewed and recorded onto video. We also a purchased microscope attachment for it for class demonstrations of the microworld. Late this year we held a very succesful 'Batons Up' to raise $2000 towards a Multimedia Computer for the Library. This should be in action next year and will assist in making the Library a true Information Centre. As in the past the PTA have supported many school trips and activities in the school. We would like to thank the many people who have in turn supported the PTA in 1994.

1994 Classics : History of Art Camp : Form 6 & 7

Library-Resource Centre The Library is always busy as students and staff make use of its facilities. From 8.00 when the doors open, it is a popular place for students to meet, complete assignments or use its resources. Tessa Duder, popular author of the Alex books, spent a day with us on June 13. A number of classes met her in the Library and were able to hear her speak about writing and her experience in the making of the film. Our thanks to her and to Mrs Shaw for organising the day. Some of the developments this year... We have expanded our professional information service to teachers. Mr Finlay's graduation with a Diploma of Teacher Librarianship means we now have two trained teacher-librarians or information resource teachers in our School. The Library Committee, with computer teachers and the Board, have had a close look at encyclopedia needs and provision in the School, and with the assistance of the PTA and wider school community we are looking forward to having CD-ROM Encarta with its computer hardware installed by year's end. It is also hoped that we will be able to update our existing hard -copy sets in the near future. Librarians: A mainly junior team of student volunteer librarians have done an excellent job this year. They have been regular and most have been willing helpers. At the end of the year, we are taking a trip to Waiuku to travel on the "Jane Gifford", and visit the Museum. to

My trip to Parliament On Monday the 19th of September I awoke at 5am to the holler of my alarm clock. Today was the 20th anniversary of lowering the voting age from 20 to 18 and it was to be marked with a special Youth Parliament to be held in the Parliament Buildings, Wellington. I had been chosen by MP George Hawkins to represent the Manurewa electorate and be a part of this historic event with 98 others from throughout New Zealand. The government limousine picked me up at 6.15am and took me to the airport where I was to depart on a plane at 7.15am. George and I stopped off for a quick breakfast in the Koru Club before departing. The flight took less than an hour so we arrived in Wellington at about 8.15am. We caught a taxi to the Beehive and as the parliament did not start until 9.30am we had time for a quick tour around the Windy

City and the Parliament buildings. As George Hawkins is the opposition spokesman for police, he was required to comment on the shooting incident to the Herald so the tour started off at the press gallery. As the old Parliament building is undergoing a $120m refurbishment which is due to be completed next year, a building opposite the Beehive has been leased to the House of Representatives. The tour included the offices of Mike Moore and Helen Clark. Throughout the day I met the Prime Minister Jim Bolger, Jim Anderton, Don McKinnon, Dame Cath Tizard just to name a few. A general debate was held in the afternoon on whether or not to lower the drinking age from 20 to 18 which we voted in favour of (6930). I also participated in a Select Committee meeting for Justice where I was able to ask direct

questions. I asked the Minister of Justice Doug Graham about privatising the jail system. We had lunch at 12pm in the Beehive banquet hall. Paul Holmes was the guest speaker and department officials were there as well. The Youth Parliament finished at 4pm with a briefing from the Governor General Dame Cath Tizard. Later George and I had dinner at Belamy's with Koru Wetere before departing back for Auckland. I was picked up by the limo at the airport and driven home. All in all the day was a tremendous experience and an exciting look into a career that I would love to enter later on in life. George was a great host and it was a pleasure to represent Manurewa High and the Manurewa Electorate for a day. ANTHONY MILLS STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE

On August 21st a group of sixteen students, two teachers and our travel agent, Mark Bayer, left New Zealand to spend a week in New Caledonia. We were greeted on our flight with "bonjour" ,a word we were to hear and use frequently for the next seven days. We visited Bourail, where we stayed at a... well, interesting hotel with geckos on the ceiling and broken string pictures on the wall. And we were lucky enough to sneak into Club Med. if only to use

the toilets! Our last stop â– 1 four days in Noumea, durinc we visited Amodee Island, we danced with some nativi cultural show and we snorke hours upon end.. The rest time was spent shopping, all we did take time out for tour.Every night we ate different restaurant, or everything from chicken and to frogs and snails. Melanie

MANUKAU CITY COUNCIL DANCE AWARD With the enthusiasm engendered by Stage Challenge 1994 - some of Mrs Graham's 4th Form Drama class decided to create a Dance Drama of their own and with many hours of rehearsal already behind them, heard the good news that the Manukau City Council was running a talent quest - the good news was they were eligible to enter; the bad news was - the contest was only 10 days away. Panic was (almost) avoided with intensive practices in every spare moment. Costumes were created at home and at school, make-up was designed and purchased, parents bullied into providing transport and on a wet, cold Saturday morning the students turned up (early) to the theatre in Mangere, took over the best dressing room, prowled around the stage checking, positioning and generally made an excellent impression with their organisation, good behaviour and enthusiasm. Their performance was dramatic and powerful and to the delight of the parents and teachers who braved the elements to support them - 4th Form Drama won the $500 prize. This has been generously donated to the Drama Department to buy some much needed new equipment.

STAGE CHALLENGE '94 In some ways "you really had to be there". Stage Challenge is not just an eight minute multi-media presentation in front of an audience of two thousand screaming fans - it is the culmination of three months exercise, sweat, worry, costume design, set construction, props making, choreography, sewing and, in short, organised panic to an intense degree. Fourteen schools were scheduled to perform at the Aotea Centre on April the 22nd and to accommodate all the rehearsal required during the day, the fifteen hundred or so competitors arrived about 9.30am complete with truck loads of scenery, props, costumes and special effects. Once inside - when at last you can get your first glimpse of what everyone else is up to - the schools seemed to divide naturally into two groups. Those who were presenting positive themes and those who were stressing the negative aspects of life on the planet. Manurewa High School had one of the largest contingents there and in typical fashion were soon chatting up the competitors from other schools and were leading the way in encouraging everyone else, no matter where they came from, of meeting life's challenges positively.

Once again we were chosen to perform first as our theme was recognised as being what the Stage Challenge was supposed to be about. Our costumes and set really reflected the talent and time put into them by Mrs Cernohorsky's 6th formers and Mrs Schanzer's artists. Immediately the lights went up on our circus characters the audience was right behind what was presented and responded enthusiastically throughout. Once again we received the award for best stage crew - thanks, Mr Platt - and if there had been an award for the most dedicated staff members, surely Mr Alderton, Mrs Leslie and Mrs Schanzer would have won hands down. All of us were grateful this year to parents who showed support in practical ways - transporting that double mini-tramp backwards and forwards across Auckland was an achievement in itself. We didn't win a major prize - but our item was given plenty of airtime in all the T.V. programmes that followed the Stage Challenge and certainly we felt that we achieved all we set out to do. Special thanks to Brigid and Tanya for the horse, and special thanks to Joanna for the after-show celebrations.

During mid-term break this year, the First XV, Senior Netball and Girls Volleyball teams attended the Schweppes International Schools Sporting Tournament in Sydney. There were over 450 students from 22 different schools at the tournament.

Our touring party had excellent learn spirit and there was real commitment to do our best. This all combined to bring us great success - the Senior Netball team came third and the First XV and Senior Girls Volleyball teams both won their competitions.

As well as sporting fixtures, the tour included a wide range of fun and sightseeing activities including a Winfield Cup match, a visit to Australia's Wonderland and seeing the sights of Central Sydney. Shopping was definitely a major preoccupation for some of our tour members! The netball girls, along with Mrs Shaw and Mrs Cernohorsky, also enjoyed a night of high society at The Phantom of the Opera'.

Mr Macleod was particularly pleased with his team's win over The Afrikaans High School from Natal in the first round of their competition and their win over Hato Paora College in the final. The Senior Girls Volleyball team capped off a very successful year of competition by winning their section of the tournament defeating teams from New South Wales and the Papua New Guinea International School in the final.

All members of our tour made friends from South Africa, Papua New Guinea, Australia as well as with other New Zealand teams. The warmth and friendliness of our students paid dividends with tremendous support from other schools for us in the semi-finals and the finals.

At the final night prizegiving, it was a tremendous thrill to see the captains of our teams go up three times to collect cups while the rest of us stood and applauded. The teams all thoroughly enjoyed the sport, the friendship, the tours and the warm 25 degree

temperatures. We are all very grateful for the tremendous support we received throughout the six months of fundraising that preceded the tour. We have come back with some great memories and are proud to have been so successful.

The Fire Stone Fair Play Awards also went to the school. The senior recipient was Rangi Franks and the junior recipient was Jackie Milner. The season was topped off with the ASB tournament held at the Windmill Road courts, where all teams participated. Although no teams reached the final games they benefited from the experience. Congratulations to Michelle Baker who was been the recipient of an ASB Sports Scholarship for next year. Ngaire Morunga and Simone Turner have been selected for the under seventeens New Zealand Maori Womens Team. First Fifteen Rugby This was another successful season for the Manurewa High School First Fifteen Rugby Team. We played 21 games, of which we won 12, lost 8 and drew 1. We won the Price Voulk McCarthy Shield against Papatoetoe High School, the Schweppes International Schools Tournament in Sydney and finished third equal in the Counties Secondary Schools A Division. The pre-season started well with good wins against Aorere College and James Cook High School. We then travelled to Rotorua to the Western Heights Tournament at which students from fifteen different schools were competing in a large number of different sports. We won our first round game against Putararu College 25-16 but then lost in the second round to Onehunga High School 34-15. This was a very enjoyable weekend and helped build a good team spirit within the team. The season started well with the team winning 4 of the first 6 competition games up to mid-term break. Throughout this time we were all frantically involved in raising sponsorship and selling raffle tickets, cross the box cards, sweets, pies and sausages, in order to pay for our Australian Tour. We needed to raise just over $1400 each and we are very grateful to all those who supported our fundraising efforts. We took part in the

International Schools Tournament in Sydney with the Senior Girls Netball and Volleyball Teams. All three teams were very successful and this was undoubtedly the highlight of the season. The top try scorers for the season were Mark Todd (9), Tony Johansson (8) and Andrew Williams (6). The top points scorer was our first five Scott Penney (118). Congratulations go to Mark Todd, Len Toi and Tony Johansson for making it into the Counties Schoolboys Representative Rugby Team, to Mark for also making it into the Northern Regions Rep Team and to Uoka Sagapolutele for making it into the Counties Under 16 Rep side. On behalf of all the team I would like to express our appreciation and thanks to Mr Macleod and to Ken Penney for donating their time and effort to the team throughout the season. We want to thank them, and the many parents who supported us every Saturday, because without them our season would not have had the success that it did. FIRST ELEVEN GIRLS SOCCER REPORT - 1994 The 1994 Girls soccer season proved to be the quietest for a number of years. The loss of many experienced players at the end of last year necessitated the inclusion of a number of junior players. These players made dramatic improvements throughout the season and will provide the nucleus of a strong team for the future. Toaila Pasi again led the team with able support from vice-captain Catherine Sharpley. The 1st XI Girls played 12 competition matches in 1994 for 3 wins, 4 draws and 5 losses leaving them placed midfield on the final result table. The Manukau A grade competition this provided a high calibre of opposition, with few easy One of our biggest games. problems throughout the season was actually scoring goals. Over the whole season the team scored 7 goals and conceded 12. In mid August the girls played the 1984 Past Pupils team in a friendly fixture organized by Tok Tobeck. It was a most enjoyable game won comfortably by the Past Pupils 5 - 1. The "Old Girls" played with commendable flair and determination despite regular complaints of wheezing lungs and aching muscles.

The defence proved to be a strong, secure unit all year against some potent attacks. The defence was made up of - Charleen Ellis, Elenisi Pasi, Kylie O'Hara, Leanne France, Michelle Lewin and Alison Bruce. The midfield included Awanga McGeady, Toaila Pasi, Donna Cooper and Catherine Sharpley. The strikers were Kristin Giudici, Carolina Tiumalu, Jamie Teahen, Andrea Kimpton and Kathryn Matete. The girls were scheduled to play in the Northern Satellite Tournament at Lynfield College but regrettably this was cancelled at late notice. I would sincerely like to thank the parents who regularly supported the team and provided transport. Finally I would like to thank the 1994 1st XI Girls for their loyalty, humour, excellent team spirit, commitment, singing and their ever present sense of sportsmanship.

CYCLING At 7am on a cold, dark Sunday morning, when most people are still tucked up in bed, the Manurewa High School cyclists prepare to race around Auckland's waterfront. One has to be very dedicated to the sport of cycling (or just plain crazy) to endure this kind of punishment. The competition this year was very strong, and our girls' team struggled with only 4 riders for most of the season. We managed to find a fifth rider for the championship race, and the team rode their fastest time to finish in 6th place overall. The boys' team finished in ninth place but were unfortunate to lose their strongest rider, Jonathon Atkinson, for some vital races late in the competition. Jonathon was picked for the N.Z. Junior team to compete in the World Championships in Canada, and he has a very promising future as a cyclist.

Manurewa High School Rowing 1993 - 1994 "Blades buried, on the job" ATTENTION...READY...ROW!!! After a late start to the season these words became very familiar to us. Our season started with a positive atmosphere and plenty of encouragement from our two coaches, Ann Proctor and Wendy Fulton. Rowing soon became a major part of our lives taking up most of out leisure time for the better part of six months. Training on and off the water, rain and shine, we were sometimes at the club until all hours of the night. All the hours of training appeared to be worth it however, we finished in 2nd place at our first Regatta at Lake Pupuke as a Novice four. We competed in the North Island Champs, National Champs and North Island Secondary School Champs, and were placed in the top three throughout the novice races in the beginning of the season. During the Christmas holidays we competed in the Blue Lake regatta where we came 1st in the Intermediate coxed four - a grade above what we should have been competing in. We would like to thank the Weymouth Rowing Club for the use of their boats and their expertise, and Miss Innes for managing the "school side of things" (and for putting up with our snoring at the School Champs!!). You really have to row the races and feel the pain of 2000m of full-on pressure to know what it is really like. We gave everything we had and more - An amazing feeling once you get your breath back! NEW ZEALAND UNDER 19 CHAMPIOF On the 15th October, at the Les Mills gym in Auckland, I competed in the New Zealand Indoor Rowing Championships. I competed in the Womans under 19 event and managed a personal best of 10 mins 11 sec over the set distance of 2500 metres.

Breaking last year's record an( attaining the title of the NZ under Champion and the gold medal tc show for all my weeks of traininc with my coach. A great start to a new season o rowing and an amazing feeling.

Volleyball The 1994 season was the first in senior ranks for our girls' volleyball team. We all wondered how they would make the transition from junior status, albeit North Island junior champions in the previous year. They quite comfortably won the Counties secondary schools title and qualified for the Auckland championships. The team had a number of close games in section play, including five—setters against Avondale College and Aorere College, before making the final against Auckland Girls Grammar. This match, played at Diocesan School, was a close fought affair, but Manurewa High School triumphed 3 sets to 1 thereby qualifying for the National Tournament in Tauranga in April. As a warmup to the Nationals, the girls' team won the Coca—Cola invitation tournament at Western Heights High School in Rotorua and had their first look at the playing through national secondary champions, Otumoetai College. The National Championships were played at Tauranga and were a challenging experience for the girls' team. A couple of narrow losses to semifinalists Bay of Islands College and Te Puke High School found Manurewa High School playing off for ninth and tenth against

Basketball Spotswood College. This game they won easily 3-0. Simone Turner made the North Island Secondary Schools team . The final and major venture for the year was the Sydney Schools International Sports Tournament in midterm break. Well supported by school and parents, the MHS Volleyball team, together with rugby and netball, had a terrific time staying at Rooty Hills resort complex, visiting Wonderland, downtown Sydney and getting involved in some serious shopping. The team's foremost objective was tournament success and this was achieved in a convincing manner our girls winning the final against Papua—New Guinea International School 3-1. A highly successful year by a committed and talented team, ably led by Aroha Moore. The junior girls finished fifth and the junior achieved sixth place. Both J Wood and Konrad Frost honours it representative Manukau U14s. The senior girls come enthusiastically in their grads Adele Siteine and Tui making the Manukau representative team. The senior boys qualified fo Auckland Premier League regional competition for the Iv top schools in Auckland. performed very creditably, finis sixth , their best result sinc 1970s. After a comprehensive defeat by a very strong Western Heights High School team we had two very close results against Fraser Tech High School from Hamilton and Tauranga Boy's High School. This tournament was a great lead in to the season to follow. New Image Rugby The year started off well with many girls turning out for trials, but without a coach, the numbers declined. However, due to the dedication of our captain, Nicole Stewart, and our manager,Robyn Osborn, the team progressed. After a lot of persuasion, Mr Williams took over the role of coach, and after a couple of quick sessions of training we entered Tournament. the Counties Although we didn't make it into the top three (let alone the top six!) the girls enjoyed themselves.From the team, three girls were selected to play for the Counties Rugby Team in a curtain raiser for the Counties versus Auckland First Division rugby match. The girls selected were: Nicole Stewart, Donna Jones and Rosie Bureta. This match ended in a two all draw.

Due to our third place finish we remained in the Counties competition. From this point the team did not lose another game. Our best games were played against Tuakau College with two very exciting draws, both of which could have gone either way. By the end of two further rounds we qualified to meet Tuakau College in the final. This game was the highlight of the season with Manurewa High School coming through and winning convincingly 2-0. playing hockey in the Counties senior men's competition and who represented Counties at the U18 level, was the team pivot. His athleticism, determination and his ability to read the play were undoubted assets to the team. Paresh Dahya was always cool under pressure and his ability to take the right option was a settling influence on the team. The goal hungry Shane Beckham showed a natural talent waiting to be tapped, while Jeremy Palmer, Anthony Cribb and Kennedy Virak were enthusiastic and reliable squad members. Bevan Waller, Shiong Ming Low and Richard Sedgwick showed commitment and all improved steadily throughout the season. The experience of Garrett Wong and Simon Palmer could always be relied on together with one of the finds of the season in the much improved goal—keeping of Jason Clements. Many of our attacks came through the thoughtful play of Craig Pretty, and together with a creative link in Ben Wilkinson we have the basis of a dangerous attack in years to come. Finally the team and the coach are indebted to team manager Mrs. Simmons who did much organising and running around for the team. Her sideline support and medical expertise were much appreciated. We also have to thank Mrs Pretty and Mrs Beckham for their support in transporting and cheering for the team.

The school's junior soccer team won the Manukau Secondary Division Schools Championship.

During Term III the school entered 3 teams into the College Leagues played at the Panmure Young Citizens Centre.

With the competition very good again this year, Manurewa won 8 out of the 10 games played.

The Girls League proved tough competition with Selwyn and Baradene the two strongest teams. The Manurewa side captained by Toaila Pasi gave good performances at all times and ended up in 4th position in the 8 team league.

Solid, regular performances by Paul Keeling, Colin Hopkins, Tony Eagleton, Garth Bankier and team captain Kelvin Jones, provided the stability necessary. With players regularly having to contend for selections in the team, it was good to see the steady improvement of Sean Ware, Nam Dage and Stephen Marshall, these players really made the effort. Jason Van Esch, Ashwin Pillay, Horn Douch and Kimly Tith showed good attacking flair, Jared Grant gave the team confidence when he played in goal.

The Senior mixed league also had formidable competition. Toaila Pasi and Alex McDonald were the outstanding team players, with Toaila narrowly missing out on the individual fair play award. The team finished 5th in the 8 team league. The Junior mixed league after a slow start, won the competition.

Good team work with players always trying to support each other was the base of a good season and championship win.

Jeremy Rowland was the outstanding boys player, closely followed by Brett Copley, the leading goal scorer. Nina Falanitupo, Kathryn Matete and Samantha Copley were most instrumental in the success of this team, that won the school's only soccer trophy of the 1993 season.

Trampolining in Oporto After 37 hours, 3 Transit Lounges and countless helpings of aeroplane meals, the New Zealand Trampoline Team arrived in Oporto, Portugal for the World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships. We were in Portugal for about three weeks which gave us plenty of time to see the sights, drink the port and do the odd trampoline routine. Portugal was very old and very dirty. All through the city streets were beggars and cripples begging for any spare change. I was really pleased with the way I competed, coming 51h in synchro, 7th in double mini (missing out on the final by 0.1) and 18th in tramp out of about 50 people my age group, from Sweden to South Africa. One of the many highlights of the trip was losing our luggage in Singapore and getting $200.00 to buy new clothes to wear while they flew our old ones in from London!

Singapore was the opposite to Portugal, being very hot and really clean. The shopping was good and dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe was cool. After a few more hours on the plane (72 in total for the whole trip counting the stops!) we got back to Auckland. I had an awesome two and a half weeks and made friends from all over the world (and it was better than doing exams!). Now 1"11 have to train and save for Canada in 1996. Marcus Leslie — 6KR
