From The Principal's Office A good school never stands still. It is four years since the introduction of Tomorrow's Schools and throughout this period The Manurewa High School has made significant progress. Results in external examinations remain outstanding and continue to improve each year. Our school is a school with academic thrust and is unashamedly competitive in the pursuit of academic excellence. We do not accept mediocrity. All students, regardless of ability, are challenged to reach their full potential. Much of our success is due to the efforts of a dedicated and stable staff, ably led by a superb administration team. Hard work in the classroom remains the main focal point of the school, where skilled and experienced teachers get the best for their students. There is a traditional no-nonsense, no-frills type education provided at The Manurewa High School where homework and examinations remain an integral part. The success of our school generates pressure on our roll. Our vision and educational philosophy are what the community wants and as a result we are now inundated with applications for enrolments from Form Three and above each year. The Board of Trustees has been forced to impose an enrolment scheme on the school to avoid 'overcrowding' of our site and facilities which of necessity must preclude some students who apply for enrolment at our school. Many families arriving in our community have been angered to find out they were not entitled to attend their local school. However, the Ministry of Education are aware of this and have begun negotiations with our Board of Trustees with a view to expanding our present facilities until a new secondary school can be built. Until this occurs we must restrict our roll to 1630. There have been many high points in student activities during the year. Student leadership in the senior school has been outstanding, with the Prefects led by Jackie Clark and Andrew O'Sullivan providing the necessary role models. The peer support leaders in term one did an excellent job in providing direction and support for our 420 third formers. During the year the students continued to make their presence felt in school teams. The level of participation in sport at our school has been outstanding. This was made possible because of the large number of teachers and parents prepared to give their time and expertise to help our students. We did not neglect the cultural side of our extra- curricular activities. During the year there were many highlights ranging from individual performances to full-scale productions of very high quality. The Manurewa High School gained the very prestigious 'Best School' award at this years Maori and Pacific Islands Festival - a credit to the groups who participated and their supporters. The dramatic highlights for the year were the participation in the Rock Challenge Festival in term one and the two plays - Day Trip to D'Illerium and Raceworld One performed in term two. The musical highlight was undoubtedly the 'Grand Variety Showcase' staged during term three. These cultural experiences have enriched us all. During the year I was able to visit our 'sister school' Takasaki Higashi High School in Japan. This is the third year of our relationship, and the time was right for a 'formal' visit to strengthen the growing bond between our schools. The visit was a very enjoyable and successful one. My thanks to Mrs Pinkney, HOD Languages for organising and arranging the visit. It has been encouraging to see The Manurewa High School continue to flourish during these years of Tomorrows Schools. It remains a vibrant, lively and friendly community where the students are encouraged to develop their abilities and grow in personal skills under the guidance of dedicated, enthusiastic and caring teachers. Our school spirit and positive outlook have not only prevailed through the restructuring, they have gained in impetus. Students, Staff, Parent Teacher Association, Past Pupil Association and Board members have all contributed to this, and I thank you all for your support. We can move forward into the future with confidence. Finally, my thanks to Mr Yardley (editor) and to the staff and students involved in Mr Thomson with the Principal the production of this year's magazine. Staff Notes At the start of the 1993 school year the following staff members commenced positions at Manurewa High School. Mr I Bargh (formerly HOD Social Studies at Manurewa High School), part-time Social Studies: Miss M Makin, Science and Biology; Mrs V Singh (returning from one years maternity leave) Mathematics: Mrs C Wollaston, English; Mrs N Sumer (part-time Biology): Mrs J Farmer, Bomar Resource Room (returned after one years study leave at the Auckland College of Education). On 1 March Ms J Selvaraj left to take up a one year study leave position at the Auckland University. Her place was taken by Mrs D Radonich. Later in term one Mrs Deva left a part-time position in Science and Biology; her position was filled by Mr G Blake. At the end of term one Ms P McDougall resigned her position to travel to the USA and the Continent. At the commencement of Term two Ms V Cawkwell joined the Art Department. At mid-term break Mrs E Donaldson, HOD Experience Unit, left to begin a new position as visiting teacher with the Manukau North Special Education Service. Mrs E Watson was appointed acting HOD Experience Unit. During term two it was with regret that the school received the resignation of Mr B Palmer a long serving staff member in the Mathematics Department. Mr Palmer had been granted sick leave and leave of absence by the Board of Trustees. At the time of writing this report the following staff members have indicated their intention to resign or to apply for a years maternity leave: Mrs B Brown has resigned her position as HOD Music. Mrs B Waterhouse, Assistant HOD Accounting/Economics and Form Level Dean has resigned. Mrs A NgWaishing, PR1 Science has resigned. WOOLF FISHER FELLOWSHIP The Woolf Fisher Trust was established in 1960 by Sir Woolf Fisher (founder of Fisher and Paykel) for the advancement of scientific and general education. Its main purpose is to provide travel grants for principals and teachers in secondary schools to enable them to further their knowledge in their own particular subject and to keep abreast with developments in a fast changing world.

There is no repeating Form 5 as everyone moves on to th equivalent of Form 6 and then Form 7 giving very hi retention rates to Form 7 level. There is a wide variety assessment methods ranging from totally internall assessed using ABA in Queensland to Comma Assessment Tasks (mini exams) in Victoria and combine exams and internal assessment in New South Wales. Eac different assessment method has difficulties associate with it and being able to see them in operation ha provided me with valuable experience as New Zealan explores alternatives to our traditional exam base system.

My fellowship enabled me to travel to Australia for the last three weeks of term two and visit several schools in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Each state in Australia has a totally separate education system. However, the fundamentals of what is taught and how it is taught are very similar from state to state and to New Zealand.

My trip has given me many ideas and resources that I c put into action in my own class but more importantly has given me a wide range of experiences and knowled as to how other education systems have dealt with issues that face today's schools.

There were, however, many interesting differences. For example, in all states in Australia that I visited a language other than English is compulsory. One major difference between the various states and New Zealand is in the area of assessment. In Australia there is no School Certificate examination. Where there is a formal/external Form 5 level qualification/assessment it is internally assessed using Achievement Based Assessment.

DUX 1993 MARK SIMMONS Congratulations to Mark Simmons of the seventh form who has been named Dux of Manurewa High School for 1993. Mark has pursued a mainly science and mathematics programme although he also studied geography. He has been actively involved in hockey, the Cultural Council and the school drama productions. This year he represented Counties at the Under 18 National Hockey Tournament. Plans for 1994 and beyond involve studying for Bachelor of Technology in Information Systems at th Tamaki Campus of Auckland University.

PROXIME ACCESSIT JOHN CHANG The Proxime Accessit (runner-up to the Dux) h. been awarded to John Chang also of the seventh form. John has studied mainly a science course an. Japanese. He enjoys badminton and snooker and is a kee member of the International Club where he has enjoyed meeting new people from a variety of cultures. John also plans to study for a Bachelor o Technology in materials to become a reseacher.

TRUST BANK PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE AWARD

Cathie Olsen of 7KL received this year's Excellence Award sponsored by the Trust Bank. She attended a ceremony in Auckland along with 80 other recipients from schools around Auckland. Cathie has pursued her leadership of the girls' cycling team with enthusiasm and total dedication; and has undertaken her senior studies in a positive and constructive way. 11

1993 PREFECTS 1993 has been a highly active and challenging year for the Prefects, and yet ahthirty of them proved that with a lot of dedication and hard work, rewarding results could follow.Rotorua set the scene for our four day learning experience, and encouraged us to think about leadership skills, commitment, and becoming positive role models for the rest of the student body. The exhilarating White Water Rafting experience proved to be a valuable team building exercise, not to mention fun!The Prefects were not only seen carrying out their duties around the school, but were involved in many extra curricular activities, such as sports, music, cultural and particularly the Sci fi production in the second term.Many thanks are extended to the extremely gifted and able Prefects team, especially for making the Ball a success. Thanks to Mr Thomson, Mrs Dixon, and Miss Moore for all of their support and guidance throughout the year. Best wishes to next years team, may your year be as rewarding and fulfilling as 1993. SIXTH FORM POETRY COMPETITION

RAIN Here it comes. Small packages of delicate moisture Falling gently at rust, but steadily gaining force Cold to the touch As it slowly streams down your face.

Sixth form English students put pen to paper with creditable results in the poetry competition this year. Would-be Sam Hunts waxed lyrical on topics as wideranging as romance, dogs and death. First prize went to Richard Jeffries 6LS for his poem entitled "RAIN". The judges described it as "..a well organised lyric with clear perspective and convincing expression." Tara Catt 6MY received second prize for "PAIN" and Lisa Hancox 6MY came third with "TRUE FRIENDSHIP".

Up go the umbrellas. Portable shelters of multicoloured textures Hiding their owners from the harsh drops Allowing nothing but the chilled air to penetrat Silently stalking the safety within. A car drives by. Harshly dowsing the standers by The wave of rain swallows them briefly Engulfing them with its cold, murky soul It then falls silently back to the ground. Waiting

PAIN Through the dreary dark pits of his eyes, A pain of such intensity was held. Nothing would reach him. He snapped and snarled backing further into the cornerless room The chase of fear lead them to him. Upon lifting his eyelids, a sea of judging faces stared at him.

A forecaster swears. He places his reputation on the line "The rain will end, the sun will shine" The sound of a passing car drowns him out Before he finishes his pledge. Here it comes. The heat from the distant star Slowly dawning once again Just like the beginning of a new day The rain is gone. He kept his word.

Whispering whines came from their curled and distorted mouths. Like a fish out of water, he was stranded. Dig dig dig he heard his self-conscious pound into his ears. With paws like shovels and as good as buckets he frantically dug. Blood filled the concrete floor. An excruciating scream echoed through the long corridor.

SHORT STORY WRITING The short story writing competition showed that students have an awareness of the salient features of the genre according to the competition judge, Mrs Sanson. She felt the logical sentience of narrative was well handled with interesting beginnings and strong endings. Johnson McKay: "He Was Only Twelve". First: Second: Rachael Butler "A Race of Two Sides". Highly commended were William Mair, Aranka Rauschenberger and Shaun Ensom.

We all know how difficult it us to deliver a prepared speech in class. Consider how much more difficult it is to have to think of intelligent, logical arguments to counter ideas you've only just heard.

The Library Resource Centre and its staff provide information and other reading material and help people use them to learn, widen their horizons and face challenges.

So why do students volunteer to put themselves through this agony?

The Resource Centre is also a useful and comfortable place to work and relax. It remains a very popular scene. Record numbers use the facilities of the library especially at lunch time. There are sometimes more people than seats.

Is it because they are frightfully intelligent, confident speakers? At the start of the year there were only three experienced debaters in the senior teams. By the end of term two, six more people could lay claim to being experienced public speakers. They were still nervous. They still did not have all the answers - but who does? But they were more confident in their own ability to stand up in front of strangers and argue a point of view, clearly and logically.

Resources (including the very necessary boxes provided by the National Library) and teaching services are much in demand among staff and pupils. This year we have been able to improve our efficiency by adding periodicals to the Oasis Catalogue Computers and a security system at the door.

I am very conscious of the amount of time and energy it takes to research and prepare for a debate.

The professional team consisting of Mrs Miers, Mrs Price, Mrs Shaw and Mr Finlay appreciate the support of the student volunteers who have helped with library duties, and Mrs Kitson, and all those with whom we have worked.

So to answer the question "Why do it?" - Because it is like an intellectual game. You get better with practice, it is fun, it is thrilling to beat a team of males from St Kentigern in a debate on that it is too soon for women to celebrate, or to win against Pakuranga debating that dissent deserves encouragement. It is even exciting to debate and lose because we did our best and we learnt from the experience. Best wishes to those seventh formers leaving. I look forward to working with returning students next year and anyone else who would like the challenge of exercising their minds.

JUNIOR DEBATING 1993 was a challenging and successful year for the junior debating team. The teams comprised 10 students from forms three and four with varying degrees of experience. During the year the team travelled to De La Salle, McAuley, Penrose and Rosehill. In all, they contested seven inter-school debates achieving an excellent record of five wins and two losses. As the year progressed the confidence and skill of the team increased markedly. A particular strength has been a willingness to analyse mistakes and to learn from them. Researchand public speaking skills have also improved significantly.

Every year the Auckland Mathematics Association holds its Mathex competition. The entries are exhibited at MOTAT during July. This year Manurewa High School won three prizes:Kezia Colbert won the individual exhibit in the Form Four section and Jarrod Kitson was highly commended. Michael Bishop was highly commended in the Third Form individual exhibit. Kezia's project investigated the difference in price between buying biscuits and making the same biscuits at home. Jarrod looked into airodynamics by examining the performance of paper darts of varying wing areas. Michael's project was about sports' injuries.

QUIZ EVENINGS Jarrod Kitson Two quiz evenings are held each year, one in the South Auckland area and the MATHEX quiz evening in Auckland. Manurewa High School sent two Form 4 teams and two Form 3 teams to each evening. The Form Four team of Brad Rudsits, Peter Simmons and Nathaniel Savage were second at the South Auckland quiz night.

B.N.Z. MATHEMATICS COMPETITION This competition, which took place in June 1993, was entered by about 20 senior students. Stanley Tang was awarded a certificate for scoring amongst the top 200 in New Zealand. We congratulate Stanley on a very significant achievement. Michael

AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE COMPETITION 1993 On Thursday June 17th, almost 300 of our students at all levels took part in this competition quiz, a record entry for our school in the main hall. Our biggest entry this year was at form five level with 100 students participating. The results were excellent with two distinctions (top 10% of students in New Zealand) each at Form three and four, Four distinctions at Form five level and a High Distinction (top 1%) to Jordan Carter of Form four. In addition a further 25 students achieved Credit Awards (top 30% of New Zealand). Most students found the quiz testing, but worthwhile and look forward to entering again next year. Overall these are the best results to date for MHS students in this competition.

SCIENCE FAIRS 1993 Once again Manurewa High School participated in the ASTA Science Fairs Competition held initially at Pakuranga College. Fourteen of our entries were then accepted into the Auckland Regional Fair at MOTAT. As a result of this, we won a $500 special prize for the top contributory school in Auckland. Congratulations to all involved and particularly Maria Nepia, Seluone Seluone, Staphanie McCullum and Jo Parlane who won seven awards at this level.

SCIENCE CREST INNOVATING WITH INDUSTRY WORKSHOP During the first week of the August school holidays I participated in the Science Crest Workshop at Massey University in Palmerston North. I was one of the lucky thirty senior students from all over New Zealand to be chosen to take part in the Crest. We were all brought to Massey to tackle real life problems. We were split into six different groups. We spent a lot of time and effort working on our group projects which required scientific knowledge. However we all had fun as well. We also went on fun day trips to ease off our stress. I had lots of fun and I enjoyed meeting all the other twenty-nine students there, whom I still keep in touch with. It was an experience I learnt slot from. I recommend that everyone else interested in "science" apply for this Crest next year. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as well as I did!

Manurewa High School was named the top Auckland school in the BP Technology Challenge. Held at the YMCA, the engineering competition involved 23 schools and involved building the best structure for a particular function using a limited selection of materials. The students took part in four events, two of which were planned prior to the night of the competition while the other two were explained on the night. Manurewa was placed first in events one and two, third in the third event and highly placed in event four making them the overall winners.

ENVIRONMENTALISTS AT PORT WAIKATO Early in March the seventh form Environmental Science class enjoyed a field trip to Port Waikato. The students were involved in map drawing of the area, after climbing a steep, rugged gorse covered hill, drawing a profile of the sand, the dunes and vegetation, studying sea life along the shore, and examining bird behaviour patterns.

ANZAC SPEECH from Head Prefect Andrew O'Sullivan When I was asked to speak at this Anzac service 1 had to think hard and deeply about what Anzac day and the war at Gallipoli actually meant to me. Like yourselves I have sat at an Anzac ceremony each year at every school I have attended, but, not until this year, have I ever really deeply analyzed what the meaning of Anzac day is.

pain they suffered stretches beyond my w ild nightmares. That year of 1915 cost New Zealand a genera of young men but as we remember those who died fot we should also remember those who survived. Mann them experiencing that the world they had left beh' home - had changed. With the smell of death still in nostrils and the vision of slaughter vivid in their in return to routine life must have been extremely diffi Nothing ever would or ever could be the same.

I realise now that these men, both young and old, some no older than myself, signed up for war with no question of their life. I wonder how many of you would have made this sacrifice and given up your life in a war half a world away so that our country could experience the freedom we have grown accustomed to. That is the key point, I think, of this day. The freedom of ourselves, of our predecessors, and of those people in the countries we fought on behalf of.

But these men also brought back with the feeling of comradeship which kindled and sparked at parade or reunion for them. Although the reun i decreased as the number of returning soldiers dim' we are left with one day each year to share with another a feeling of patriotism throughout the country.

Anzac day also gives us an identity as New Zealanders. The integrity and bravery that our soldiers showed gave us recognition as a country, albeit small, in its own right.

The first Anzac day was celebrated in 1916. A of ceremonies and great sorrow. It is still today a sadness, laying of wreaths, and a time to refl remember and honour. This year Anzac day does no on a weekday, shopping centres will remain open, bu does not mean that people will not remember. It is that it is also a time of comradeship, a time to rem shared experiences, have a drink with a mate and ano drink for a mate who was taken in war.

Although we celebrate Anzac day on April 25th, the day of great significance in 1915 for New Zealand would in all probability be August 8th. On this day New Zealand soldiers, and New Zealand soldiers alone, captured Chunuk Bair, a key position to the war. They fought strong and hard for that small piece of ground. Men were evacuated wounded or sick only to return again and again until they were dead or maimed. Finally the land was claimed, but for one day only could they bask in the glory of their great victory only to have their high hopes in a pool of blood when the position was lost the next day. This was the battle that took some of the best we had.

In a tribute addressed to those soldiers returned, the following was stated at one of the first services held in New Zealand: " I would not have these men think, that w they leave this hall, they will be forgotten." This remains true today. These men will r in our thoughts. To New Zealanders Anzac day remain a remembrance to those who have fought those who have fallen in war. The soldiers who mad ultimate sacrifice - for our freedom - their lives.

I remember when I was a young boy, thinking how great it would be to go to war. Dreaming of being a hero as I dodged the bullets, blew away the enemy and saved my comrades. But as I think about it today, I realise that these men fought a different war. A war where they were all heroes but one of bloody massacre where the

FORM SIX GEOGRAPHY CAMP

Manurewa High School was one of 35 schools competing in this annual quiz. The team consisted of Hue Eng (captain),Marcus Leslie and Nicole Thomson with Victoria Ryburn and Mathew Savage as Reserves.

On the 23rd of June six form geography travelled to Waharau for what they thought would be a relaxing three days away from school - but they thought wrong!

A wide range of geographical skills and knowledge were tested, and competition in the early rounds was intense. Results were invariably close but the team had put in many extra hours of study under the watchful eye of the Geography Department staff and this paid dividends as the team progressed smoothly through to the semi-finals. Their approach was one of diligence and concentration combined with humour and a sense of fun. With attitudes such as these the group won their semifinal and found themselves competing against Liston, Macleans and Kings Colleges in the finals at the Auckland College of Education.

The first expedition was to the headwaters where students measured rocks, paddled through frozen waters, chased mandarins down the stream and enjoyed a gymnastics display on rocks by Katrina Vause. Back at the cabins, some students tried to re-create their own bedrooms by hanging Elle MacPherson posters and possum skulls on the walls. Slaving over their books, the students were tantalised by the great smells of Mrs Herring's cooking, and were lucky enough to miss out on Mr V.K.'s famous spaghetti bolognese special.

The level of knowledge and skills demanded in the questioning and tasks to be completed was very high and all teams had their chance to win. Manurewa eventually finished third but only six points covered the four teams at the end. A tired but happy group of students had thoroughly enjoyed the experience and felt it had enhanced their overall understanding of this complex subject. Congratulations to the team and many thanks to all those who helped and supported them.

JAPAN-NEW ZEALAND EXCHANGE VISIT Takasaki Higashi Senior High Schoolâ€”Manurewa High Scho Term Two A major link was established this year visit of the Manurewa High School Principal, Mr Tho to Takasaki Higashi Senior High School in Japan. After a number of visits over the year appearance of Mr Thomson in Japan again formalis relationship between the two schools. With Mr Tho were Mrs Pinkney, and Louise Anderson (5DN), N Batey (5GL), Lisa Cumberland (4MS), Hue Eng (5 Karina Ochi (4MC), Matthew Robertson (5WL), P Sutcliffe (4LA) and Nicole Thomson (5MR). Takasaki Higashi has 951 students and a welcome assembly was held for the Manurewa group three week tour proved to be a great learning exp with visits to schools and homes, promoting the le of respective languages through speaking and inte with other students, and gaining further insight in way-of-life and geography of Japan. The hospitality at all times was fully appreciated.

Earlier a group from Takasaki visited Manurewa High. There were two teachers, Mr Tsutomu Yoshioka, the leader, and Mr Masamu Takimoto, teacher of English, one boy and thirteen girls. Friendships were quickly established and the Japanese were able to see how "we do things" in New Zealand. During their August stay, the Japanese visitors were treated to many visits such as Expo and the Auckland museum, New Zealand style fishing, horse riding, school based social events and touring to Rotorua and Mt Ruapehu. "Yuck" was a new word for the Japanese when threading worms on to a fish hook. "Yummy" was another popular word. The visitors also learned about "bringing your own" at the socials in the pavilion. New Zealand dancing skills were quickly learnt. They sang songs in English while the Manurewa High group replied in Japanese songs. Then all sang in Japanese. A highlight was the special formal welcome to the school. The Japanese were given a Maori challenge before being welcomed into the hall. Speeches, songs and gifts were exchanged. A special feature was to hear the Japanese sing Pokarekareana.

INTERNATIONAL FRANCESCA From Italy Hi! I'm Francesca an AFS student from Lecco, a ci the lake of Como in North Italy. I spent two mon New Zealand until 25 August. Before she left she said: "I'm enjoying my stay because New Zealand is a wonderful country everything is different so I want to thank AFS for opportunity to have this experience. I prefer New Ze schools: in Italy I've got twelve compulsory subjects Religion. I go to school from Monday to Saturday 8.00am to 1.00pm for three days and to 2.00pm for other three days. After school I've got a lot of home to do and much study: usually I study 6 hours per With the word "class" we mean a group of students the same subjects so I've got the same friends and I sc the same room all the year: the teachers change every hour. At Manurewa I went to my first school ball: in Italy not have a college ball. Sport is not important in hal have two hours of P.E. per week during which we volleyball, athletics, basketball, gymnastics...we (Intl .t rugby, hockey or netball. My school is for account there is one type of school for every job. Food is very different here but I like it also if I Italian pizza and spaghetti. MELISSA AISBET'r Australia My name is Melissa Aisbett. I live in a country town called Toora, with a population of Victoria, Australia. My family consists of Mum, four younger sisters, aged 14,9,5 and 3. My h include playing tennis in the South Gippsland B Competition during the summer, swimming, playin saxophone and visiting friends. I stayed in New Zealand for the winter to was really shocked when I cost came here, coming small country town into an urban area. I have f Manurewa High to be a very co-operative and fn schoolandmost of the staff and students are alw if I need assistance. I will always look back on this exchang fond and happy memories.

from CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA Jaime Teahen, 16, will be at Manurewa High School until the end of term two 1994 as part of the Rotary exchange scheme.. She comes from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA. Back home, JaiMe attends Jefferson High School where there are 1700 pupils. At Manurewa, she is in the sixth form. During her stay she wishes to learn to ski and surf; and to see whales and dolphins.

TSING TEVAI Tahiti I'm an exchange student from Tahiti. You know, in French Polynesia. My hobbies are watching T.V., going to the cinema, sports - particulatlybasketball, soccer and volleyball, and video games. I have three sisters. They are 12,10 and 4 years old.

ALEXANDRE WONG Tahiti I'm sixteen years old, I come from Tahiti. I'm Maryanne Sharrock's exchange student and I stayed in New Zealand for six weeks. I like New Zealand because it is wonderful and I thank the students who were nice to me.

Form Three Camps This year saw us offering a different version of our Waharau camp programme to all our third form students. We reduced the duration of the camps to three days, requiring the dropping of the overnight camp in the bush. The main aim of this change was to reduce the costs of our camps to our students so as to allow more to attend. We were largely successful in this.

INNOVATIONS ENTERPRISE - YOUNG ENTERPRISE 199 This year's Young Enterprise Group consisted of students. The Managing Director, Michael Jenner appointed in March. This is a very challenging pos* and Michael has shown good leadership skills. After some deliberation it was decided to manufactt and market various cards using rubber stamps and embossing process. Two hundred and fifty cards w. made by the Production team for Mother's Day in and one hundred and twenty cards for Father's D September. These were sold and a further selecti everyday-type cards were manufactured. These were in packets of five, and proved popular with staff elderly people.

We organised a total of five camps during Term I. 316 Form Three pupils attended all together, with guidance from a total of 43 staff, parents and instructors and 30 "liaison" prefects attending to help their classes. The programme was designed to encourage the pupils to learn new skills in the outdoors and to work together as teams in supporting each other. The activities in the day programme were:Tramping- each group tramped for a day in the streams and tracks of the park.

Angie Galletly did an excellent job organising production team.

Sailing- a half day was spent trying to master the Optimist sailing dinghies.

The discount theatre tickets for Village Six Cinemas w very popular last year, and after receiving seve telephone calls from social clubs in the area, it i decided to sell these again this year. They have prowl be very lucrative.

Canoeing- each group had a half day session learning the basics of controlling (and capsizing!) kayaks. Orienteering- basic map reading skills and cross country running combined to lose a few.

Recognition must go to Aaron Perry and John Allah their enthusiasm and unfailing reliability, and thanks to the other members of the YE team.

Confidence Course- clambering, climbing, swinging balancing and crashing!

The shareholders can expect to get a good return on investment this year.

Pipehenge- finding out about the Earth's position and movements in space and the basics of day and night, the seasons and time using our 20th century version of Stonehenge challenged a few minds!

In addition, many games and activities in the evenings, some physical and some cerebral, proved there is an alternative to TV. Nobody starved, some gained a kilo or so; few had too much sleep; all had a lot of laughs; pupils realised that staff are people too; some actually learned a thing or two; lots of new friends were made; some fears were vanquished. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the vast amount of extra work put in by all the people involved in the programme. CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP 1993 has been a very busy year from which we have all benefited a great deal. Most of Term I was taken up with planning for the Easter Assembly. This year we presented "The Champion" which portrays the Easter story as a boxing match between Christ and Satan. Chantelle did a great job as Satan, and Jason and Kirisome starred as God and Jesus.

CULTURAL COUNCIL 1993 Several members from 1992 launched the activities of the year and they were joined by newcomers from Forms six and seven. Jodene Murphy was elected Chairperson, then on her leaving school in Term two, Matthew Metcalfe and Kylie Sanderson became joint 'chairs'. Steering and liaison committee members were Michelle Winson, Jodene Clutterbuck, Lisa Harland, Jonathon Sammons, Michelle Thompson, Anne Singh, Jayesmita Dahya and Andrew O'Sullivan.

The fact that they were also in the First XV and had a game when our fmal rehearsal was on didn't help, but the good guys always win, and they did a stunning performance anyway. Incidentally, they lost the rugby! It was a thrill to have Jackie Clark, our Head Girl, tell the Assembly why she is a Christian. We were privileged once again (third year in a row) to have Lew Meyer do a special week of "Christian Awareness Meetings" concluding with an open-air meeting. Music, magic and art livened up his excellent presentations on a variety of stimulating topics.

In Term One the major task was to help the Students International Club with sausage sizzles. Three projects involved many members in Term Two: Careers Evening (refreshments for presenters and visitors), Collection for Daffodil Day, the Cancer Society Appeal and Front-of-House duties and ticket sales for the Drama Productions.

An important feature of being a Christian is knowing what the Bible is about, and right through the year we have had well-attended Bible studies on Tuesdays. We have had a variety of "main" meetings on Thursdays, including meetings taken by group members and Christian teachers. This year we have been privileged to have the assistance of Jurgen Matthesius, youth pastor with a local church, who did most of the production work with "The Champion" and assisted tremendously in all the other activities.

Special tribute must be paid to many of the seventh form members who have been part of the council since form five. We especially appreciated the assistance of staff convenors: Mrs Lal, Mrs Hayward, Mrs McLaughlan and Miss Briggs.

1993 ANNUAL PREFECTS' BALL A NIGHT IN PARIS On Friday 16 July more than 300 elegantly dressed senior students set aside their school uniforms, books, exams and routines, to spend a night of glamour and excitement at the annual ball. The Pan Pacific Hotel set the scene for A Night in Paris along with an expressionist painting which acted as background of Paris for formal photographs. Thanks must go the Art Department and the prefects involved in creating the Van Gough masterpiece. The band provided music for the snowball waltz, cha cha and fox trot and gave a 1930's atmosphere giving the seniors a chance to strut their stuff. Thanks to Miss Perjanik for giving pre ball dance lessons. After all the glitter and fun, of over indulging in sumptuous cuisine, the night had to come to an end so it was au revoir to Paris and bonj our to the real world. -Jackie Clark

E OKU MATUA E OKU WHAEA, NGA IWI 0 NGA IIAU E WI-IA TENA KOUTOU Te Ahikaroa's year (Manurewa High School Maori Culture Club) started very slowly. Not only did we have to think about the Auckland Secondary Competitions, but we had to search for new tutors. After several meetings and gatherings, 011ie Ifopo and Sipi Waitai accepted the job of tutoring students in our culture and promoting a sense of belonging. They were warm and very inspiring. While attending the festival at Nga Tapuwae College we were placed fifth overall and won places in the following sections: 1st - Kai Arataki Wahine - female leader, Renee Grace 3rd - Mita 0 Te Reo 3rd - Waiata Tawhito 1st - Best School We had supportive and inspirational leaders: Renee Grace and Dwayne Hudson who lead by example and were a delight to watch. Attending the Queen's coronation was something Te Ahikaroa has done for five years. This year we were placed second. It was a great three days away and included detouring to Waingaro Hot Pools. We had an excellent time and many new friends were made. Down to Hastings we travelled to Te Aute College for the opening of their Wharenui "Rangi". It was a great experience. Immense time and effort were contributed to Live-ins, practices, working bees and meetings. People behind the scenes, especially our whanau will be remembered for all their love, care, warmth and time. Wanganui were the hosts for the Manukorero Speech Competition and Ratana Pa was our home for four days. Being away from Auckland was neat. It was really interesting and many friends were reunited. Regional competitions for Manuariki Nationals were held at Kohimarama. We were well prepared and for the first time we were placed first and received the " Hine Whatua" trophy - what a buzz! The second week of the August school holidays saw us travelling again - Whangarei,Karetu, Waitangi, Russell, Waimanoni, Awanui, Kaitaia, Panguru, Taheke, Waimamaku, Omapere, Kokohuia, Waima, Tam Mahuta, Dargaville, Cape Reinga and Kapo Wairua. It was eight days of fun. Knowledge and love was given by all the marae we stayed with - Ida ora. Another traditional performance was the Mauriora Festival. This year it was held at Rosehill College, and it was a night of entertainment and fun.Looking back, this being my last year, there have been times of troubles,tears, laughter, fun and togetherness. ASIAN CLUB The Asian Club had another successful year. With a membership of over 60 students the club has representatives from most Asian countries. For the first time the club has a whanau. Many members can be seen having their lunch in and around IA most days. This whanau has proved important as a sanctuary for those students still adapting to the school and the New Zealand life style. A number of successful events were undertaken during the year such as the bar-b-cue at the beginning of the year which allowed the students to get to know one another. This was attended by Mr Thomson and other staff members and was extremely enjoyable. More recently, a trip was made to an ice rink and for many this was their first experience on ice. The club looks forward to a busy 1994.

A tribute to the Manurewa High School Cook Island Culture Group of 1993. I would like to thank students for their time and the effort they put into practices. Even though we were a small group we were determined to do our best, and that's exactly what we did. On Sunday 18th July, Te Ahikaroa comp, the intermediate section of the Auckland Regional N ariki competition at the ASS centre. Renee Grace first for best female leader. Dwayne Hudson was fi best male leader. The group was first overall in the interm section. They have now earned the right to comp the National competition at Manu-ariki, Tatimarm March 1994.

HOMAI RESOURCE ROOM Twenty three students with visual impairment have been receiving support from the Homai Visual Resource Room staff in 1993. Four students will sit Bursary examinations this year and another four will sit School Certificate. The students participated in the school athletics preliminary events and the cross country races. Annette Jackson-Potter gained a very creditable 5th place. During the August Holidays, Annette competed in the Australian games for the Visually Impaired held in Adelaide. Annette won four gold medals in track and field events, a silver and two bronze medals in the swimming events. Daniel Te'o had success again this year in the Auckland Secondary School's wrestling championships winning a silver medal in his weight class. Daniel then competed in the New Zealand Secondary School's championships where he came second in his class. Several of the students are very talented musically and have been involved with school cultural groups. Daniel Te'o and his group "Shade" have performed at school assemblies and were the subject of an "In Focus" television programme. Resource Room staff have provided every third form class with the opportunity to visit the Visual Resource Room to learn how the students are supported and cope with their school work and with finding their way around.

TOP SKIER Joanne Duffy, a pupil at Manurewa High School in 1989 and 1990, has been selected for the New Zealand ski team that will compete at the winter Olympics for the Disabled which will be held in Lillehammer, Norway, in March, 1994.

Joanne, who is partially sighted, took up competitive snow skiing two years age and has already had considerable success. She skiis with the help of a sighted guide, whose task is to ski in front and call instructions. Joanne averages 80 km per hour on the downhill event. She competed at the New Zealand Disabled Skiing Nationals in August 1992 and was subsequently picked for the Development Squad to compete at the United States Disabled National Ski Championships. Joanne spent four months over the NZ summer training in Colorado, and won three gold medals at the Championships. She is returning to Colorado in November for further training before going on to Norway for the Olympics.

The Manurewa High School Past Pupils Association The Manurewa High School Past Pupils Association are now a very active group who are wanting to become more and more involved with aspects of school life. The office bearers for 1993 are : Miss Karen Miller, President: Catherine Metcalfe, Vice President: Toni Robbins, Secretary: Russell Trow, Treasurer. Each years' programme is set at the Annual General Meeting and has focuses on three events:

School Production - The Past Pupils designate one night of this production as a Past Pupils' night, and they encourage as many past pupils as possible to attend. The production is followed by a supper in the pavilion. Annual Sports fixture against the school - This is held on a Sunday afternoon early in

Term Three. Two shields record the results of each year, one is held by the school and the other by the Past Pupils Association. The overall winner for each year receives the Van Twuiver Trophy. The Past Pupils were the winners this year.

Form Seven Graduation Dinner - This is

organised by the past pupils as a special function for Form 7 graduates each year. At this Graduation Dinner Form 7 students are presented with their Certificates, Testimonials and the School Magazine.

The Past Pupils Association are always looking for new members and hope that Form 7 students who leave school this year will take the opportunity to join the Association. Plans are already underway for the Reunion Weekend in 1995 to mark the 35th year of the school.

PEER SUPPORT In term one, seventh formers took part in the Support Programme in which the seniors assisted third form intake to assimilate into high school life. the sevenths receive their training.

PTA BATONS-UP It was a fun night at the Parent Te Association Batons-Up evening this term. The ba was held to raise funds for the school and those in were happy with the result.

ROCK CHALLENGE 1993 The Rock Challenge for us was a new and exciting experience. For us 7th formers it was our first and last opportunity to take part in a production of this kind and because of the professionalism displayed on the night at the Aotea Centre, before thousands or people, the competition is set to continue in the future.

As we were learning things from the teachers and juniors were learning from us, we later found that each new experience made us all the wiser. It was the bonding between the students and teachers to create a close and efficient team which made the whole venture a great success. Without certain people taking on certain jobs the production may have been a failure. With Mr Alderton and his lighting experience we could not go wrong. Due to Mr Platt and the 6th form Technical Drawing stage crew who designed and contsructed the huge set, the performance blew everyone away. Mrs McCrystal's 6th form Clothing and Textiles made up the dancers, painted the stocking and made the costumes for Madonna, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley and Marolyn Monroe and won the prize for overall best stage crew who also had their own MHS tee-shirts. Miss Briggs with all her experience in dance boosted our confidence while people like Mrs Schanzer helped admirably behind the scenes. Mrs Graham started planning our performance in November 1992 encountered sleepless nights and tiring rehearsals to make our show a big success. To her winning was not everything and she stressed many times that togetherness was the key and as long as we worked as a team we were all to be winners. -Jonathon Sammons and Jackie Clarke.

SCI-FI PRODUCTION The theme for this year's production was science fiction and two completely different types of plays were chosen under this general heading. "Race World One" was a serious investigation into the issues of racism in a Romeo and Juliet type situation while "Daytrip to D'Illerium" was particularly put together for the talents of the prefects who traditionally support the drama production. A special bouquet must be given to the 6th Form Drama for whom the production is a major part of their assessment. They created a warm, good natured and welcoming atmosphere so those drafted into the plays with little experience were made to feel an integral part of events. A feature this year was the exemplary backstage work and behaviour. The make-up team and stage crew were extremely professional and it is to the credit of everyone involved that with a large cast and numerous scene, costume and make-up changes that no staff supervision was required in the wings and no one missed a cue. Those in the plays were generous, helpful, supportive and encouraging of one-another at all times. They were also handy with paint brushes and staple guns too.Imagine it all. Green and purple facials, glitter in some weird hairstyles, sprayed rugby socks, toi toi everywhere, polystyrene and tin foil. Mr Alderton furiously learning lines, Mark and Brendon up ladders, Mrs Graham scavenging through rubbish tins...no wonder she gave a sigh of relief when her leadership in the major production was over.

First Fifteen Rugby The big game of the season was played near the end second round between the two neighbouring set ourselves and James Cook. It was the annual ch for the ASB Cup. The game was played in app conditions but that never changed the high intensi found ourselves down 6-0 at half time. The seco started well with a fine try to Len Toi, but JC repl a try of their own. We kept attacking their line b defence was desperate, and it was holding. Wi minute to go they were leading 11-6 when w awarded a penalty try which was followed by Scott Penney conversion. We won 12-11 and the was finally coming home. Congratulations go to Jason Mamoe, Tony Johanss Len Toi for being selected in the Counties Sec Schools representative team, while Mark Todd and Penney were selected in the Counties Under 16 (Mark captained this team). Top try scorers f season were Jason Mamoe and Mark Todd with followed by Tony Tulutu, Tony Johansson, Fra Le Len Toi with 3 each.

1993 proved to be a very successful season with everyone determined to do even better than last years fourth placing in the Counties Secondary Schools' competition. While you were all tucked up in your nice warm beds, in the early mornings of February, we were out running the tracks of Totara Park and sprinting up the 92 steps, supervised by the ever fit John-Walker-Macleod. After the run we were given a live singing show from Jason, Tony, Malae and Kirisome in the showers. Crowds were known to gather outside the Pavilion at these times just to listen to the magnificent harmonies and descants wafting out!! The pre-season games got underway in March with a fantastic 6-0 win over De La Salle (who then held the Moascar Cup) followed by a hard fought win over Aorere College. The Counties competition kicked off in April, but we didn't start too well and unfortunately lost our first three games against the strong teams of St Stephens, Wesley and Pukekohe. When term 2 arrived we were all absolutely determined to play well and we won 9 of our next 13 games. We finished second equal with Wesley College in the second round of the Counties A division and third overall.

NEW IMAGE RUGBY New Image Rugby had an enjoyable and reasonably successful season this year, with many new players joining the squad. We were very fortunate to retain the excellent coaching services of Dean Adams and we are very grateful to him and his son Jeremy for the many hours they have devoted to the squad. In the first term we entered two teams in the Counties tournament at Pukekohe, and succeeded in reaching the final against Pukekohe High School. Unfortunately we lost by a narrow margin but it was an excellent effort from all, especially the many players who were new to the game. In Term two we were very fortunate to be asked to play a curtain-raiser against Papakura High School at the Counties/Western Samoa match on July 21st. The score was 3-3 and it was a very exciting day. Tries were scored by Nicole Stewart (2) and Rosie Bureta. At the end of Term two we invited both Rosehill College and Papakura High School to play us and we enjoyed both games. We look forward to a successful season next year.

TOUCH RUGBY The increasing popularity of summer tout was confirmed this with a large number of teams in this year's competition with such diverse tean as Gifted n' Brown through to Tumeke. Netball It was another very successful year for netball. The Manukau Secondary Schools Netball Competition, held at the Manurewa courts every Wednesday, was the focus of the season. The Senior A and Senior B teams provided the leadership and role models that are so important in any sport. They were always at practice and showed real determination regardless of the results. Both teams came seventh in their respective grades. The Senior A team consisted of Michelle Thompson, Kelly Henare, Christine Paenga, Shelley Dixon, Sheree T ipen Jodene Clutterbuck, Angie Mizziebo, Maria Ne p is . The Senior B team members included Jaylene Barker, Sumer Palmer, Sarah Bentley, Katrina Tolomaki, Rachel Bridge, Charisse Stevens, Valerie Inthout. Both teams were coached by Mrs Shortland whose expertise and guidance was always appreciated. The fourth form netball teams had an outstanding season, winning the Intermediate A grade and coming runner-uo in the Intermediate B grade. Talented, motivated and committed players meant that the 4A team won all their games for the season, and the 4B team, after coming fourth, were then second in their competition. They were coached by Mrs Shaw with assistance from Nicola Capstick and 4A captain, Ngaire Morunga. The teams were: 4A - Ngaire Morunga, Aroha Moore , Kristy Rope, Davina Savage, Shaolin Faafili, Sandee Gurnick, Sarah Broughton, Sharon Tearoti. 4B- Emma Taplin, Simone Turner, Rangimaree Han, Angie Johnson, Tania Tou , Ailene Autufuga, Rita Seumanutafa, Tracey Cassidy. Ngaire was also the recipient of the Firestone Fair Player Award.

FIRST ELEVEN GIRLS SOCCER REPORT - 1993 The 1st XI Girls soccer season has been the longest, most arduous and certainly one of the most enjoyable in my memory. The 1993 season saw unprecedented interest in girls soccer and as a result strong competition for team places. The pre season trials were attended by over 50 girls and from these the 1st and 2nd XI squads were selected. The 1st XI played a total of 24 competition matches spanning a period from mid Term 1 to the August holidays.

The season started encouragingly with a comprehensive 6 - 0 win over traditional rivals Massey. The girls played their regular competition games in the Manukau Secondary Schools A grade. They won all their games against James Cook, Waiuku and Papakura. They had a win and a draw against Rosehill and two narrow losses against Pukekohe. The team finished this competition in second place and so qualified for the Auckland Top 10 finals.

At this stage of the season vice captain Toaila Pasi (also known as Doris the Tank Engine) was selected for both the Auckland Under 19 and Under 17 squads. Toaila travelled with the Under 19 team to tournaments in New Plymouth and Canberra, Australia. She played with distinction at both of these tournaments. The Aucldand Top 10 matches provided some very tough opposition. The team recorded three narrow losses and a draw against Lynfield College. By this stage the team had committed itself to playing in the National Secondary School Championships in Napier during the August holidays. This meant frantic fundraising and preparation throughout the latter half of Term 2. The most successful and enjoyable fundraiser was the Indoor Soccerthon which received phenomenal community support, raised a lot of money and provided an entertaining evening. At this point I would like to acknowledge the generosity of the Bell Bird Hotel and the Lion Foundation for their timely and generous donation to the Travel Fund. I would also like to publicly acknowledge the financial assistance given by the Manurewa High School Board of Trustees and PTA. In the first week of the August holidays the team, Miss Briggs and myself travelled with Jim Taia to Napier. The girls were to play nine games in four days with a rest day in the middle of the week. Throughout the tournament the girls played superbly in defence but failed to score goals. As a result the team lost five games, all by narrow margins. The team played four of the top ten ranked teams in New Zealand during the tournament. The girls had two good draws and two wins against Wairarapa College (5-0) and Aotea College (3-0). During the tournament the team scored nine goals and conceded only eight. The girls gained valuable experience playing against consistently strong opposition. During the rest day the team visited Napier city, Marine Parade, Marineland, The Aquarium and in the afternoon watched Toaila play in the NZ trials. Dinner was at the Pizza Hut giving us some respite from the culinary wizardry we had become accustomed to at Riverbend. The dessert bar was well patronized and the teams usual exemplary behaviour was rewarded with a handsome discount by the Pizza Hut manager. It was really nice to see familiar faces during the week in the form of Mr O'Donnell and Mr Cook, who

FIRST XI SOCCER 1993 1993 proved to be a difficult year for the senior soccer squad with the code undergoing a rebuilding phase after the successes of 1991 and 1992. With a large number of First XI players leaving school at the end of last year continuity became a problem and certain areas showed up as major weaknesses.

the standard of performance and enthusiasm for others to follow. The team will be all the stronger for his experience next year. The most encouraging signs of the year however, came from Lee Purdie. Lee walked straight into the First XI as a third former and quickly cemented his place as a player with the ability to perform in almost any position on the field. This, when combined with the superb efforts of the third and fourth form team this year, is indicative of a most exciting few years ahead.

The position of goalkeeper was an especially tough one to fill and Kavi Goundarr and, later, Mohammed Kasim performed admirably in the most unforgiving job of all on the soccer field. Other players to shine during the year included team Captain, Andrew O'Sullivan, whose untiring encouragement was often a source of inspiration to the team. Hamish Macdonald and Brendon Rout also formed the basis of a strong defence. These two players surprised many opponents because of their comparatively slight build. Opposing wingers seemed to believe that they could be taken lightly; they usually only made this mistake once!

The teams success this year may not be measurable on results alone, but that is always a small part of the equation anyway. It's naturally nice to win, but the spirit of taking part and fair play in a strong competition is more important by far than the win at all costs attitude displayed by some of our more serious sportsmen and women at senior levels. We need to thank Patrick Overall here, not only for his untiring efforts on the pitch, but also for his steadfast refusal to take life too seriously and often keeping the entire team in stitches. Every organisation needs a "joker."

Dean Taylor left his Club commitments this year to concentrate on school life and the Firsts gained from his considerable experience of top level football. Dean was able to take on entire opposing front lines on his own, displaying a technical mastery which was the envy of other teams - until he turned too sharply playing Waiuku and broke his ankle! Way to go Dean! Scott Anderson was able to tell a similar story except that he only managed to play one pre season match before breaking his ankle in a Club match. Had both of these players been fit throughout the season there is no doubt that our results would have been far more positive.

So while the season may have been a mixed one as far as results are concerned, the code is in good heart. Plans are already afoot to raise both the skills of the team and the status of the game around the school in 1994, and with the influx of superbly skilled third and fourth formers our results can only improve. A final word of appreciation. Of all schools in the Manukau area, Manurewa High Schools always had the best prepared, smoothest and best marked pitch. This stands as a credit to Mrs Moor, our head groudsperson, who ensured from week to week that the pitch was at its best. Many thanks.

2ND XI SOCCER An enthusiastic group of 3rd to 7th formers formed this team. They really enjoyed their soccer and gave excellent effort and motivation towards the sport. Having 15 players ensured plenty of substitutions during a game which made the coach really work especially if he was refereeing as well. NISSAN MANIALIEWA CYCLING It was a year of rebuilding and restructuring for the boys and girls cycling teams this year with many of the seniors having left in 1992. However, as usual the cyclists showed enthusiasm and determination to succeed and by the end of the season we could take five boys and five girls to the secondary schools championships at Levin in August where we competed well. "Akattack" (Mr Atkinson) displayed experience in his coaching and bonding sessions at the Auckland Waterfront Time Trials and at Levin. Also thanks to Mr Yardley and Miss Innes for their coaching and managerial support. BOYS' HOCKEY This was a year of mixed results for the 1st XI with some great wins interspersed with some disappointing results. We saw steady development of most team members with spectacular improvement in the maturity of the play of Mark Simmons and Gavin McDonald. Both of these players gained representative honours in the Counties U17 side. The team had some great results against a number of teams, including a 13 - 0 win over Rosehill College and a hard fought 4 - 0 win over Wesley College being a few of the most memorable games. This year we had a very strong defence based on our star goalie Mark McDonald and the steady skills of Marc Dixon. The game was dominated in the middle by the skill and high work rate of centre-half and captain, Mark Simmons. His leadership both on and off the field was a real asset to the team. Support in the mid-field came from the heady play of the ever present Ryan Wells. The front line was dominated by the devastating strike power of Gavin McDonald by far the teams' leading goal scorer including a haul of 12 goals in one game. His skills and speed will be ensure a great future in the game. Support up front was supplied by the deceptive skills of Roshan Patel, the determined play of Malcolm Frith and the fast improving Peter Simmons.

Paresh Dahya showed a depth of knowledge of the game demonstrated by his ability to make the right decision under pressure. His skill at creating play helped instil confidence in those around him. Garrett Wong and Cameron Frith also made a valuable contribution to the team effort. Finally the team and the coach are indebted to team manager Mrs. Simmons who did much organising and running around for the team. Her sideline support and medical expertise were much appreciated. This year Manurewa High School was able to field a second hockey team for the first time in a number of years. The team consisted mostly of a bunch of enthusiastic Form 3 students, many of whom were playing the game for the first time. Although the score sheet was not often in their favour the team improved markedly throughout the season and will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Thanks go to Mr Cricket for his commitment to coaching and managing the team throughout the season. We also owe a debt to Mrs Pretty who supplied transport for the team so often. Without this contribution the team would not have existed.

GIRLS SOFTBALL 1993 The 1993 Softball season began in the second week of the first term with trials for our Manurewa High School Representative team. We had several students turn up to trials and ended up with a squad of 16. The team were all issued with uniforms kindly lent to us by the local Manurewa Softball Club. We also had the help of Mrs Daniels as Coach, Mrs Brydon to help with transport and Mrs Schanzer and Miss Day as Managers to help with organisation and transport. The enthusiastic group of girls, some having never played before trained to be ready for the first game of the season. Much credit must be given to seventh former Keleigh Henare for her patience in helping coach and develop the skills of the team, herself becoming player and captain of the team. In our first game against Hillary College we found our feet and won 16-3. Our confidence was boosted and the next week we defeated McAulley College 19-4. This run continued with a win against Nga Tapuwae 16-6. Practices continued and form continued to show with our fourth game of the year resulting in a win against Tangaroa 16-1. This was followed by defeating Mangere College 15-9. Finally it was the last game of the season against a strong softball team Otahuhu College. This decided who would become the South Auckland Champions. We won this convincingly 13-8.

Throughout this the girls must be commended on their commitment to the team and to training - a very big factor to their success. Their good spirits and fair play stood out when competing against other South Auckland schools. Much thanks must also go to the adults who helped in making this happen.

The cricket season is spread over terms one and three. The IstX1 won three and lost two of its games in term one in the 35 over games. The best player this year was Ly Sen, an excellent batsman and useful bowler while Raynor Clarke proved to be an effective strike bowler.Shan Kinghan was a promising all rounder. Lee Cook and Muhommed Kasim led the team well.

The past season has been one of consolidation for teams involved in the basketball programme. After a slow start when our Senior Boys team lost their position in the Auckland Premier League in overtime to Macleans College, all teams participated in the Manukau Secondary Schools League with varying degrees of success. The MHS junior girls volleyball programme peaked 1992 when our team won the Counties competitio thereby qualified for the Auckland championships. The team was always competitive and worked h achieve fourth place. They were accepted as a late for the North Island Nationals held in Rotorua. We were pleasantly surprised at our success a tournament with the hard work and training finally off. Our old rivals Nga Tapuwae College were d and we finished top of our section. In the sem against Tauranga Girls we came back in the third an set, after trailing 9 - 14, to win 16 - 14 to reach o ever national final. In a closely fought contest, narrowly to Kawerau College. LUCY BARR broke records in 1 length Backstroke, 3 lengths Backstroke and RAELENE CARMONT broke 1 length Butterfly. Raelene and Lucy are joint Senior Girls Champions both with 20 points. The senior boys champions are GAVIN BISMAN and MARK HODGES who equally gained 14 points. TENNIS

Topping the division last year ahead of a dedicated Kings College, the senior boys tennis team began the season on fire winning 45 games out of 48 becoming division champions again. The team was closely ranked and consisted of Hamish Priest, Brendon Rout, Kirk Watkins, Shaneel Prasad, Gerrard Billington, Jonathon Booth, Nicholas Taylor and the late inclusion of Grant Lawson. Thanks to Mr Reiter, Miss Makin and Mr Booth for their help.

JUNIOR GIRLS TENNIS The tennis season started well this year, with wins against Penrose High, Papakura, Selwyn College, but deteriorated with losses to Diocesan and Howick Colleges. All matches were played at Manurewa High School. The team members were: Simone Turner 4MS, Donna and Bronwen Cooper 4WA, Jenifer Robertson 3PY, Anna Burr 3HN, Awanga McGeady 311N. Teachers: Mrs Christie and Miss Gallot.

TABLE TENNIS On Sunday 27th of June our table tennis I ea represented the Manurewa High School at the Count Table Tennis Secondary School tournament whirl' held in the Manurewa Table Tennis stadium. Twelve teams took part in this tournament. It was c school's A team of Bill Yeh, Jerry Chen, and Tony Chai who won over James Cook B, Rosehill College in the set finals, and Wesley College in the finals. We we presented with the Kirk Shield, which presently sits ail school trophy cabinet. Our school B team of Bryan Wyatt, Pheng Nguy, and Ct Wyatt also played extremely well. They won aga Papakura and James Cook, but were just beaten Wesley College in the semi-finals. They had a play with Rosehill College and lost that; their 4th placing it tournament was creditable. Later in the term, the school A team represented t school again in Hamilton. They competed in the Regi finals, held on 15th August. The team was placed overall after a long struggle with the reigning champ' Hamilton Boys' High School. This was an outst effort, with Bill Yeh winning his games. Special thanks to Mr. Waardenburg for organising , table tennis teams.

BADMINTON 1993 saw an increase in numbers playing â€˘ badminton at school and in the interschool competition. A change in competition format meant that teams entered into two grades based on ability rather than age. Nlanurewa High entered six teams, three boys and three â€˘ girls both A, B1 and B2. Top honours to the boys A team of Geoffrey MacCarthy, Jamie Pere, Nicholas Taylor and Jonathon Chappell (captain) who won the Counties interschool for the second year in succession. In addition, the boys B1 team won the boys B grade competition, the boys B2 were runners-up and the girls B1 team won the girls B grade competition. The success of these teams shows the depth of talent at the school. There are also some outstanding players in the 3rd and 4th form: Margaret Yetton, Lisa Nicol, Rachel Aitken and Nicholas Chappell all of whom represented Counties in the interprovincial competitions. FORMS 3 AND 4 BOYS SOCCER 1993 The start of a new soccer season and young hopefuls run onto the pitch to try out for positions in the third and fourth form team. The unknown quantities soon begin to excite the coaches with their well-schooled skills and obvious love of the game, Manurewa High School had inherited gifted club players and in many cases, representative players. The new third formers soon gelled with the "old hands" the fourth formers and made a formidable team.

WRESTLING CHAMF'I0 Talofa lava! My name is Daniel Te'o, and I am a student at Manurewa High School. As known by have a severe visual impairment which prevents r participating in many sports, such as Rugby, Consequently, I have chosen a sport that does no rely on the sense of sight, but on the other four si the human body. My chosen sport is wrestling, at of fourteen when I discovered that my sig deteriorating. As mentioned previously, I c participate in many sports - including many of the sparts that I had loved for most of my life. From my first real taste of Wrestling, I didn't real it much, but as I went on, I began to realise that I the true sport for me. During my three year a Wrestling, I have participated in many tourn. representing both Counties Wrestlers Club, and Ma High School, competing against abled wrestlers, received top prizes in tournaments such as the Ai Championships, the North Island Championshi National Championships. I train twice a week wrestling club and coach, and do my own pi training at least four times a week - including training, and skill learning. I find Wrestling very en and it has given me both an active life in sport, as an option for a career for me to pursue in the futun In the near future, I would like to carry my W career further, in attempting to gain a scholarshi sport. However, as a long term goal, I woul represent my country in the 1996 Olympics, and the world that I'm not afraid of anything and any that I will give them my best shot, because I kn have everything it takes to be what I want - the and especially the confidence to achieve t because and the saying goes, "With confidence, won even before you have started."

Each of the 16 member squad gave 100% to the team and consistently thrilled parents, coaches and peers with their skill. They were all outstanding ambassadors for both the sport and the school. The final result for the season was second in the league, those first two games being our downfall. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team members for their dedication, loyalty and good humour. Also thanks must go to the parents who supported us during the season especially Mr Roy Keeling who willingly gave his time to help coach and referee the team. Finally, thanks to the Manurewa High School ground staff who kept the pitch in excellent condition throughout the season. SANTA SERVICE For several yews the senior Technology students have undertaken a community service - to design and make the Santa float for the Manurewa Christmas Parade. The float is the centre-piece of the parade and the quality of construction and the creative abilities of the students are greatly appreciated by the Southmall Management who sponsor the float each year. For many of the students,this is their last school-based activity before pursuing careers. The Centre Manager, Mr Bryan Head and the Entertainment Manager, Mr Barry Hornblow are always happy with the fine effort the students make towards the success of this, the most important feature of the parade.
