PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE 1992 was another extremely successful year for Manurewa High School. The roll of 1630 students meant that space was again at a premium and there were few occasions when classrooms were empty. However, to keep pace with the roll growth and expanding curriculum we continued to update and expand upon our buildings and equipment. 1992 saw the establishment of a Language complex with two classrooms and a resource room. Word processors were installed in another classroom, bringing to a total of five the number of classrooms with computer facilities. Planning for 1993 includes a new double classroom block which will be used as a base for English for Speakers of Other Languages courses. During 1992 students again excelled in all their activities. Pass rates in examinations were exceptionally high and well above the national average. It was gratifying to note the increasing numbers of students participatiflg in the various national and regional competitions, for example, Science Fair,Mathex, Art exhibition, Geography quiz, Bank Mathematics competitions to list but a few areas. One of the cultural highlights of the year was the production of the school musical, "My Fair Lady". A great number of students participated in this event which gained tremendous support from the school and community. Student leadership has been a special focus at Manurewa High School during 1992. The prefects team, ably led by Paula West and Andrew Smith, have provided student leadership from the top. They, together with the seventh form, have proved to be excellent peer support leaders and have helped in the process of establishing a very successful peer support system. This and the third form self management programme, have provided an excellent start for the over 400 third formers who commenced their secondary schooling this year. Opportunities for leadership roles have been there for those students who wish to take them. The contribution of seniors through the four student councils - Cultural, Environmental, Publicity and Sports, has been much appreciated. My thanks to all those students who have served the school so well in so many capacities during 1992. My thanks also to the staff who have continued to provide the basis of the excellent educational opportunities which exist at Manurewa High School. A special thank you is extended for their loyalty and dedication and for their willingness to go that little extra bit further when the occasion arose. Our school staff have taken on an international look, with two teachers having been involved in international exchanges. Mr Ian Bargh, former HOD Social Studies, spent a year on exchange with Mr Allan Jeanes from Simon Langton Boys Grammar School in England; similarly Mr Warren Yardley, Senior English Teacher and Publicity Officer, spent a year on exchange with Mr Chris Davies from The Axe Valley School, Devon. Such international exchanges can only be of benefit to all concerned. One of the strengths of Manurewa High School is the hugh range of activities that we are able to offer for students to participate in, and again, this has been made possible by staff contribution. My thanks to Mr Yardley (Editor) and to the staff and students involved in the production of this year's magazine. They have aptly captured the philosophy and spirit of the school and the diversity of school life. Finally, I thank the groups that have s ipported the school so well during the year. In particular, the Board of Trustees, the Parent Teachers Association and the Past Pupils Association. My best wishes to those leaving school. I hope that through your time and association with Manurewa High School you have acquired the necessary skills to enable you to make a useful contribution to society. 2

1992 STAFF NOTES At the start of the 1992 school year the following staff members commenced positions at Manurewa High School. Mrs R Schanzer (Art) and Mrs J Mason (Science). Mr W Yardley returned from a year's teacher exchange in England, and Mrs D Jenner took up a long term relieving position in the Accounting/Economics Department. Mrs D Cox was appointed teacher-in-charge of the Homai Visual Resource room as Mrs J Farmer was granted a year's study leave at Auckland College of Education. During Term One a long serving staff member, Mr Graeme Slack, passed away. Mr Slack made an enormous contribution to the school in the Learning Adjustment Department, English as a Second Language, and in Careers. A tribute to Mr Slack is contained elsewhere in this

magazine. At the end of Term One Mrs Davies who had been relieving in the Home Economics Department, left to commence duties at Aorere College. At the commencement of Term Two, Mrs B Girdhar was appointed to a position in the Home Economics Department. Mr D Bargh was appointed Careers Advisor. Also two staff members were appointed to part time positions: Mr L Menzies (Science and Mathematics) and Mrs J Douglas (ESOL). During the term Mr B Palmer, a long serving staff member in the Mathematics Department, took sick leave and was granted six months leave of absence by the Board of Trustees. Mr K Agraval was appointed to a part time position in Mathematics. At the end of Term Two, two teachers left on maternity leave,

Mrs N Sumer and Ms V Collings. Mrs P Murdie left her relieving position in the Learning Adjustment Department. At the start of Term Three, Mr H Pollock commenced duties in the Science and Biology Department; Mrs C Hayward returned to the Adjustment Learning Department, and Mrs D Jenner commenced a relieving position in the Accounting and Economics Department. At the time of writing this report only one staff member is leaving - Mrs A Ng Waishing on a years maternity leave. Mrs V Govender has been appointed to this position. To the staff who left during the year or who are leaving, we thank you for your contribution while you were with us and wish you every success for the future.

OBITUARY GRAEME FREDERICK SLACK 11 December 1949 - 26 April 1992 Graeme Slack was a teacher at Manurewa High School for a total of nine years. Born and educated in Christchurch, in 1967 Graeme attended Otago University where he gained a Diploma in Physical Education, and after attaining his Diploma from Christchurch Teachers College he began his teaching career in 1972 in the Physical Education Department at Manurewa High School. He became HOD, Physical Education, at St Peters School, Cambridge, in 1974 and at the end of 1975 he left there to commence his overseas travels. In 1976, after training in London and gaining a certificate in English as a Foreign Language Teacher, Graeme taught English as a second language in various countries in Europe, and spent considerable time over the next two years in schools in Portugal and Finland. He returned to New Zealand in 1978 and taught Physical Education at St Peters School, Cambridge, before becoming HOD, Learning Adjustment at St Pauls College, Ponsonby. In 1982 Graeme was appointed to Otahuhu College to establish an ESL Unit' within the school. He returned to Manurewa High School in 1984 to work in the Learning Adjustment Department becoming Head of this department in 1986. Graeme soon became renowned in our School for his expertise in teaching English as a second language. Graeme had a great love of travel and there were few countries in the world which he had not visited. It was this passion for travel which prompted his application for, and subsequent appointment, to become a member of a teaching team from New Zealand to take up a six months lectureship in the University of Guizhou, China, in 1990. Graeme returned to Manurewa High School in September 1990. In 1991 he was appointed Careers Adviser - a position Graeme filled with enthusiasm and dedication until his death at the end of Term 1 this year. Amongst Graeme's many interests and skills was mastery of the culinary arts. A chef and caterer of repute, Graeme's sense of occasion, sensitivity and concern for people and their needs put him at the forefront of the catering and entertaining circle. As an enthusiastic and extremely able sports person, Graeme excelled in swimming, hockey and squash - the former two which he coached at Manurewa High School. Graeme loved his garden and his home bore testimony to his gardening expertise and skills. His sense of humour, friendliness and sensitivity made him a well-respected member of Manurewa High School Staff. Graeme was first and foremost a people person. Remembrance of his care and thoughtfulness for his family, friends, colleagues and pupils shall remain a tribute to him.

Paula will study science at Auckland University in 1993 with a view to possibly exploring medical research. As Head Girl, Paula has provided excellent leadership in and out of the school and all have enjoyed her company.

David is currently studying engineering at Auckland University for a Bachelor of Engineering degree. He was in fact offered a place starting in year two but declined so he would not miss any fundamental work. When he graduates he hopes to travel and to work in as many different countries as possible knowing a New Zealand degree provides a well respected educational background in any part of the world.

At Sixth Form certificate level, she gained the high distinction of achieving six grade one passes in her subjects. She has enjoyed netball and is an enthusiastic player of the classical guitar. David Le Mesurier

David is a keen follower of motor racing, especially offroading and speedway. David has also enjoyed helping to build his parents' house here in Manurewa.

PREFECTS It has been a challenging, busy year for the 1992 Prefects team who have shown themselves to be highly motivated, dedicated and an extremely capable unit. A four day trip to Rotorua started the year well- an excellent learning and team building experience. Thanks must go to Thomas Vaetoru for his Cordon Blue cookery, to Eli Weir and Ajay Parag for their musical serenades. "The whanau" returned from the trip exhausted but ready to meet their duties with confidence, enthusiasm and a dedication which saw them through a demanding year.

The contribution of the prefects team to the school production of "My Fair Lady" helped to make the musical the success it was. Thanks and congratulations must go to the Prefects whose efforts were greatly appreciated. Thanks must go to Mr Thomson and Mrs Dixon and the rest of the staff for their assistance . Andrew and I would like to thank the Prefects' team for all the efforts and sacrifices they made. With tremendous support for each other and oustanding team spirit, "The Whanau" have enjoyed an excellent and most successful year.

Seventh former, Jacqui Anderson, has been voted Student Representative on the Manurewa High School Board of Trustees. She said her aim was to hear and discuss with the students their ideas and opinions and to present these of the board for consideration. Current issues included forms of fundraising for school teams and trips.

STUDENTS INTERNATIONAL Our association with overseas students was firstly with Max Michaeli from Germany and Kari Di Palma from the United States, both on long term exchange programmes. Laetitia Piras from Italy came on an intensive two month exchange.The first social event for the year was "The Dinner" to which all American Field Scholarship hosted students in the Auckland area were invited. Such was the success of this dinner that a second was held in term two. This time only the West Auckland chapter of AFS was invited as our Asian Club also came making it a truly multicultural event. This began an association that later in the term saw seven students from West Auckland hosted in Manurewa by our Students International Club organised capably by Anne Wilson. Our guests were treated to the junior dance, visiting Manukau City, Nathan Homestead, The Rock and Mineral garden and lunch at the Clevedon Wool Barn. —Burnette

School life was very different beginning at 7 am and finishing at midday. This meant we could all go home and eat huge helpings of beans on rice. School uniform was jeans and T-shirt. Most schools did not have funds to supply text books so the majority of the work was photocopied or dictated. The teachers and students had good relationships and at times the teachers were even considered friends! It was at school I met my best Brazilian friends and leant to speak fluent Portuguese.

Last year I was given the b4 opportunity I have had in my 1 so far. For 12 months I went Thailand as an American Fie Scholar. Thailand is a tropical count: It has three seasons: really h( hot and rainy. The entire time was there the temperature d not drop below 25 degrees ai that was hot considering o school uniform was a long na' blue skirt, shoes, socks and white cotton shirt. It took me long time to get used to th custom.

Brazilians thrive on their social lives and going out is a big part of teenagers' lives. Normally we would not leave home until 11 or 12 pm and not return until the early hours. A drinking age does not exist in Brazil so anyone can buy and drink alcohol anywhere but most Brazilian teenagers do not drink. They go out to have fun, dance and meet friends.

The Thai language is tonal at I found this the hardest part my exchange but I thought the people have accepted me as of of them and it is only right should try to learn as much as can. It took me a long time b with patient friends and family, took one day at a time ar managed to overcome th hurdle.

I had the most unbelievable time of my life, met incredible people and I cannot wait until I return.

KARI DiPALMA USA Before I came to New Zealand, I basically knew that it was a tiny island floating around in the Pacific on which kiwifruit was grown. It did not take long for me to realise that New Zealand is a beautiful, fresh country full of green pastures and cultural diversity, rainbows and sparkling beaches. And it did not take me long to grow to love and appreciate New Zealand. Thank you to all the people who made my year in New Zealand so enjoyable, and at Manurewa High School, memorable. Thank you to all the staff and teachers for your assistance and the friends I have made, especially Bronwyn Wilson. Thank you also to my host family for treating me as part of their family right from the beginning. I will miss you all.

I know a lot of people thin Thailand is a dirty place but th . is only our ignorance as it is ho I felt before going there. It is, i fact, a place of mystery, wit hidden wonders that I hope or day I can experience again.

I am seventeen years old and I am staying with my host family in Manukau Heights for one year. I am pleased to be allowed to go to the sixth form of Manurewa High School which totally differs from my school in Germany. Besides a greater choice of subjects and a bigger number of students in M.H.S, discipline plays a much more important role at this school here in New Zealand. We do not have school uniforms, detentions and assemblies in Germany. Nine to eleven subjects have to be chosen in my home country, which includes the compulsory subjects of Maths, German, English, another foreign language (French, Latin, Russian) and P.E. Marking is based on two exams each term (50% , 2 terms total) and another 50% oracy which is normally discussions during the period (40%) and written homework (10%). This does not mean projects and assignments, we do not have any. The first period starts at 8 o'clock in the morning and school finishes with the sixth period (or seventh) at 1.15 pm (2.05 pm) (not each subject each day). After lunch at home and two hours homework, extracurricular activities take place, normally not linked with school such as sports etc. We have to go to school on Saturdays and we do not have a school ball. I have enjoyed myself very much here and I would like to thank all the teachers and pupils for being 1 2 so helpful.

I am 16 years old and I came from Italy to enjoy school at Manurewa High for two months. There are many differences between the schools in Italy and the schools here in New Zealand. In Italy, the students don't go to school from Monday to Friday, but from Monday to Saturday. In Italy we have six periods every morning and school starts at 8 o'clock and finishes at 1:10 pm. We have only a short break at eleven o'clock and a period is only fifty minutes long. We do not have lunch at school. We have fourteen subjects: Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Maths, Physics, Philosophy, History, Physiology, Art history, Chemistry, P.E., and Religion (but it is optional).

MR YARDLEY IN DEVON As part of a teacher exchange scheme, I taught at The Axe Valley School, Devon, England, for a year. The experience was valuable in making new friends and to study the English education system. The Axe Valley School has about 400 pupils from form one to form five and is located in the small town of Axminster with its 800AD church. On the main sports field there was an old army defence pill box and on the boundary anti tank structures, a reminder from World War Two. I quickly adapted to the delightful Devon accent, the pupils and the school system; and after a while I was one of the team-although some pupils kept thinking I was Australian. They laughed at the kiwi accent. For instance I was told I wrote with a pin, I said they wrote with a pan when after all it was a pen we were talking about. Spring was magnificent. The deciduous trees came out in leaf making many of the narrow lanes into avenues of trees, the blue bells and daffodils appeared everywhere. Summer sun was gentle on the skin and pleasant.

WOOLF FISHER AWARD TO MR WILLIAMS

One of the many highlights was finding the street in London where my grandfather was born in an area called Highgate. We lived in a small village called Uplyme, two miles inland from Lyme Regis and my daughters attended a nearby comprehensive called The Woodroffe School and gained much valuable educational and social experiences. In any spare time we travelled around England, Scotland and Wales, and look forward to the day we can return. Congratulations to M r Williams who has been awarded a Woolf Fisher Fellowship. This entitles him to study an aspect of education in Australia over a

three week period. He will take up the fellowship in 1993. Mr Williams is expected, as part of the award, to experience the life and culture of Australia.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL AI group has reached another milestone. During its second year of existence members met regularly every Thursday and letters were despatched to various countries expressing concern on human rights violations. The Urgent Action group carried out this responsibility with diligence. Even though the persons on whose behalf the appeals were made were total strangers, we rallied around and made impassioned appeals in the cause of human dignity and fundamental rights. We were delighted to receive news of the appreciation of our efforts by the AI headquarters. It was rewarding to note that our efforts were not in vain. We offer our sincere thanks to Mr Finlay for his guidance and encouragement which made our task pleasurable. MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION When most of our friends were winding down after term one, we were deciding whether we, the official representatives of Belgium, should ally ourselves with Germany in their vain attempt to acquire supreme global power or whether to support France by maintaining Belgium's status as a neutral peace loving country. The threat to world peace was only one of several issues MUNA presented to our assembly of 157 member states at Akaranga over that weekend. Other issues included human rights, use of the Antarctic, right to veto at the United Nations, arms expenditure, sanctions, nuclear testing and apartheid. The simulation exercise provided an invaluable opportunity to view global issues and make decisions from the point of view of a country other than their own and to voice opinions on social and political events. -Alice O'Brien and Dirk Cotter 7th Form 14

SIXTH AND SEVENTH FORM DEBATING Do you think that it's better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven? Would you like to live in the eighth state of Australia? Do we really have a basic failure to communicate? This year we entered into two competitions, the Auckland Association Debating competition held at McLeans College, and the Jaycee Schools Competition. At the beginning of the year we did not entertain thoughts of being in the final of the Jaycees Competition, especially after we lost our first debate to Kings College. But all the casual discussions during lunchtimes and the unrelenting hard work that went into the preparation finally paid off. We are now in the final of the Plate competition after defeating schools like Rosehill College and Tuakau College.

Form 3 Debating The Form 3 Debating Team was formed in March this year with 13 students. Our first debate was held at Manurewa High School against Mount Roskill. The moot was "We Should Keep Our Zoos." We took the affirmative and won the debate. Our second team contested the same moot against Macleans College and unfortunately lost the debate. From our third debate, our team travelled, as the negative, to Penrose High School. Unfortunately we lost this debate. For our fourth and final debate, we travelled to McAuley High School. We proved successful in this debate, although we won by only three marks. All of the debates were interesting and challenging. We were pleased that, with a lot of co-operation and personal time from both teachers and team members, we managed to win two out of four debates. Kate Bennett and Amanda Butler - 3SN

Debating enhances one's confidence in public speaking. It puts you in the stream of current affairs and aware of what is going on in the world. SIXTH FORM SHORT STORY AND POETRY COMPETITION Mrs Sanson said she did not find judging the short story competition an easy task, especially to find the "best" story. Finally the task was completed and all stories had strong openings capturing interest, tightly controlled structures, carefully chosen vocabulary and most of all, an understanding of the genre. First place went to Brent Barrett, 6BR, with "The Nameless", a vivid, gripping horror tale; second to Mark Simmons with "Sunday Bloody Sunday, 6GB, and Cushla MacDonald with "Gentle Woman"; third to Simon Campbell, 6GY, with The Wind in the Trees". Highly commended were "Perfect Crime" by M. Thompson and "The Waves of Life" by Cameron Mart

Music from Barcelona filled the hall as the 1992 Fashion Parade began. After several months of practice, 31 apprehensive students had been transformed into 31 confident models. Wearing clothes that ranged from casual sportswear to high fashion ball and bridalwear, the models sauntered down the catwalk.

As usual the teachers displayed their usual...uh... ummm...talents with their rock and roll item. We suggest they + stick with their teaching careers. Some of our talented young designers displayed their creations in the Student originals section. Congratulations to Nikki Adams on winning the Design Award. ANNUAL SENIOR BALL Our senior ball•was held at the Pan Pacific this year with the Egyptian theme of Heaven in Thebes. Well over 300 glamorous, well dressed students arrived (some via a stretched limo) at our plush social setting and enjoyed an evening of music, dance and supper. Special decorations relating to the Egyptian theme were made by Kirsten Clarke, Burnetta Van Stipriaan, Alice O'Brien, Robert McGavin, Kiri Anne Dickson, Le Ngo and Thomas Vaetoru. One special feature was the•appearance of the Television Channel Three cameras to video for the "In Focus" programme comparing the approach to the annual ball by a large city school and a smaller country school.

WALKATHON 1992 Although the weather was overcast with occasional dizzle, there was plenty of enthusiasm in the walkathon held in October. Mr Macleod who organised the event said he was pleased with the participation. Total pledges came to $14,700, money set aside to up-date computers within the school.

Macbeth On Tuesday 11 August, 70 fifth formers from Manurewa High School went to the Herald Theatre in the Aotea Centre to experience Michael Hursts production of the Shakespearean classic Macbeth. The interpretation of the "Scottish Play" created a totally engrossing performance in which the audience were constantly taken by surprise by a cast who utilised the entire theatre as an acting space. Regrettably Fleances' unscripted fall from the scaffolding brought the performance to a close half way through the play. The ambulance was called and the eleven year old actor, Daniel Fitzgerald taken to hospital with a leg broken in two places. Our theatre-goers had living proof of the indiction of misfortune associated with the staging of Macbeth.

The following week the producer and Lady Macbeth (Donogh Rees) visited our school and provided us with many valuable insights into the issues involved in the production. They assured us the accident was a result of 'fatigue" and

there was no need to have exorcised any "evil spirits" before the season began. Those of us lucky enough to have seen the complete performance will agree that this was an example of the very best in the Shakespearean contemporary live theatre. H.M. Kilgour. 19

But we can't forget that sad, sad day Some ....... took our stereo away The microwave soon became overused To make up for our stereo blues Smells of noodles put us in a daze But couldn't make up for those radio waves In May we were dealt a similar blow (Rachel was one that found recovery slow) When they declared " NO CAMP FOR THIS YEAR " It's understandable that we cried " it just ain't fair" In July the Ball was a breath of fresh air With lots to do before the big night drew near Nat and Pat shared with us all their moves And pretty soon we were all into those ballroom groves 20

SCIENCE WINNERS Seventh Former, Sarah Cridland, gained first prize in the animal behaviour section in the 33rd Auckland Science Fair. Her entry dealt with bio rhythms and was assessed best in the sixth and seventh form division. Sarah's entry went forward to the National Science Fair held in Wellington in September. Only five projects from the Auckland area were chosen. Manurewa High had 11 projects entered with second place in the geography section going to Paul Simmons and second in electronics to Bruce Smith, both of the sixth form. It is the end point of a task involving 1400 students from our school who produce science projects as part of the class work.

AUCKLAND SCIENCE QUIZ In October this year all form 4 students sat a test to find the top four scientists in each class. These teams then competed against each other in the school final which was held in the library on 8 October. The winners were Paul Marshall, Hamish McDonald, Matthew Savage and Sam Crowther of 4PY. They became our school team and on the 19 October they competed in the South Auckland zone final held this year at King's College. Turning in a very impressive performance they managed to beat all opposition to win with King's second and James Cook third. Eight schools took part in the quiz. -Mr R. Reiter

BIOTECHNOLOGY IN ACTION Students involved in the Environmental/Biotechnology course in action.

National Manu Korero Speech Competitions. September 21 - 26 1992 (Hastings) Maehe Nikora represented Manurewa High School at the Regional Speech. Competition& winning first place in the junior boys section and won the " E tipu E REA " trophy. Maehe went on to represent Auckland at the National Speech Finals held at Hastings in September. Maehe was the 10th speaker in his section. Approximately six minutes into his 12 minute speech, the time keeper rang the bell, far too early, this had a devastating effect of shattering Maehe's train of thought, sense of timing, and as a result, he broke, his mind went blank. Courageously he completed his speech and for his strong stance, humble yet forthright delivery from such a tiny frame, Maehe was accorded the tribute of a standing ovation from the crowded house, and a personal tribute from the great respected Kaumata of Tanui 'Te Ao peehi Kara'. Although Maehe did not win the prestigious 'Te Rawiti Ihaka' taonga, he did win the hearts of all those there and without a doubt, Maehe will be back next year. FOUR YEARS AGO...

Four years ago we started attending Manurewa High fresh out of several different intermediate schools and we were put together in Miss Gallot's form class. On Arbor Day 1988 our class donated money toward a pohutukawa tree which we planted outside C block. Five years later those of us still at school gathered with Miss Gallot around our tree - a reminder of the '88 class. Like the tree we planted we have grown and taken roots in this school, we have stayed together and formed some everlasting friendships and as we all move on we are symbolised by this tree. -Le Ngo

CULTURAL COUNCIL Our first term activity centred on the "World Game" organised by Mesdames Weatherly and Taylor. A group of sixth formers acted as ushers for the evening performance. In July many helpers were needed to support the prefects' team at the annual Careers Evening. As many members were on stage in the "My fair Lady" season others assisted with Front-of-House duties over the six main performances with other 6th and 5th formers offering to fill vacancies. Ticket sellers and ushers were organised for the term three Fashion Parade conducted by the Parent Teacher Association. Our final task involved ushering at the senior prize-giving in November.

As Chairperson I thank all the loyal members of the Steering committee and Council as a whole as well as all students who helped in projects.

In late March of 1992 Te Ahikaroa participated in the Auckland Secondary Competitions and was honoured in been placed second overall and also in the following events. 1 Te Whakaeke 3rd place 2 Te Waiata 2nd place 3 Te Poi 2nd place 4 Te Waiata-a-ringa 2nd place 5 Te Whakawatea 2nd place 6 Kakahu Wahine 2nd place Kerry Majurey was honoured to be placed first overall in Auckland for the Kai arataki wahine, Kia ora te Wahine Toa. [Tena koe e te Atua mo au manaakitanga ki a matou]. Tutors, Maehe and Ethel Nikora spent timeless hours composing songs and teaching us the old way in Maori tikanga. Te Ahikaroa also participated at the Maori Queen's Coronation ,"TE ARIKINUI TE ATAIRANGIKAAHU", in the second week of the May school holidays. This is an occasion that we all look forward too. Apart from the many citizenship Powhiri with Sir Barry Curtis, Te Ahikaroa entered the Waitakere Regional Competitions for Manuariki and was placed third. On Monday 21 September through to Saturday 27 September, Te Ahikaroa went on a hikoi around Gisborne and Hastings. COOK ISLAND GROUP Kiorana Tatou Ka to toa With the Pacific island and Maori Festival within the first three months of school the Manurewa High Cook Island Group got together almost five days every week in an attempt to perform four items for the annual event. To perfect our item which included a Kapa Rima (action song), an imene tkui (hymn), an ura pa (a drum dance) and an ute (chant and telling a story) the Cook Island Group practised before and after school. The end result was more than pleasing. Sincere thanks for all the time and effort given along with the endless enthusiasm. PAST PUPILS ASSOCIATION After leaving High School many ex-pupils will spread out in different directions, some of you will go on to University, some to Tech, work or even overseas. Alot of friendships grow distant not because people mean any less to you but friendships require time. Five or ten years down the line people will have changed, gained qualifications and jobs. The Past Pupils Association provides a common basis for those of you who want to keep in contact with old friends.

Rugby and whether you played for the School or not you are welcome to come along and play or provide some good loud and completely unbiased support - as long as it is for the PAST pupils.

The Past Pupils Association organises a Graduation Dinner (formerly the Leavers Dinner) at the end of each year for leaving seventh formers. This is supposed to be a fun evening for you to relax and to have a good time while the Past Pupils and the School wish you well.

Finally the Past Pupils Association is planning a Reunion Ball for 1994, we need your support and attendance.

Once a year, in late September, the Past Pupils Association has a sports day - Past Pupils vs Present Pupils. The rivalry is strong with the events having been very equally matched so far. If you played a sport at High School let us know so that you can come back and help us to humiliate the present pupils. We play Hockey, Netball, Soccer and

This year the Past Pupils had a dessert evening after the School Musical. The plan was for as many past pupils as possibly to come back on the same night, enjoy the musical and have a chance to meet and catch up with each other while enjoying the most important course of any meal - dessert.

We hope to see a large turnout at our various functions and welcome your input at all times. The Library Resource Centre When you walk into the library out of class time, most days especially at lunch, you will find yourself surrounded by activity. People are doing assignments, completing homework, consulting the catalogue on the four OPAC computers or scanning the shelves. Others are reading or relaxing. There is a queue at the photocopier and a shorter one at the desk. Busy librarians are answering questions or issuing, reserving, renewing books using computer bar-code readers and student cards. (Everyone got one this year; they serve as Library cards). Pupil librarians are active with a variety of jobs. Their help is valued. (But why doesn't everybody put books back in the right place and leave shelves tidy?). It is class time and the library is still busy - probably two classes with their teachers and a constant flow of visitors seeking information. More and more, people are using the resources and facilities skilfully and purposefully - library teaching staff, teachers and pupils have been working together developing research skills.

There is a sense of relief in the workroom as the great project of cataloguing all our books onto the computer nears completion. Automation has gone well. New books, carefully selected by library staff and teachers are prepared for use the job is streamlined these days. We are hoping that next year people will be able to use computers as well to 'consult our INNZ (Magazine article) index. Good work, library users and library team!

NOUMEA '92 The first week of the August Holidays saw the French trip to Noumea, New Caledonia, led by Miss Osborn. There were 17 students and five adults. At Noumea we found we had been transferred to a different hotel but no one complained when we got there. The Surf Novotel is very impressive with two restaurants, a pool, a casino and a piano bar. Our rooms were very comfortable and most of us avoided using the mini bars in the rooms where a can of coke was $8! After Miss Osborn made us walk 5 kilometres into town on the second day we quickly searched out the bus depot and by the end of the week we were experts in getting around town. We went on various tours and everyone had the opportunity to Sunbathing on Amedee Island

learn a lot about Noumea and the people. Tours included a countryside tour, visits to the museum, the New Zealand consulate and the Parc Forestier. Leisure time saw us at Kuendu Beach for sunbathing, kayaking and swimming and a day trip to the Amedee lighthouse island where we had a BBQ lunch and a concert adding to the enjoyment of lying on the beach.A few sea snakes put some off swimming...! We had fun practising our French skills on shopkeepers. We had dinner out every night sampling some traditional French cuisine like choucroute (sour cabbage) to venison New Caledonian style, to escargots (snails) to frogs' legs. LEARNING ADJUSTMENT SKI TRIP

SEVENTH FORM BIOLOGY TRIP - GOA ISLAND.

The trip was made in conjunction with the Form seven Physical Education trip to Mt Ruapehu. Only two of the pupils had been on the snow before but we were very fortunate to receive generous funding from The Hillary Commission for Sport. This covered ski hire and lift pass costs.

Early on a clear summer' morning in February, a group o 7th form biology students, a fey teachers, a principal or two an their friends headed off excited() to a protected marine reserve u the east coast, "Goat Island".

The trip was a great success and our goals of social development and mountain experience were achieved in often difficult conditions. the pupils were a credit to our school and showed they were able to draw on reserves of determination and courage in blizzard conditions. We travelled by coach to the mountains and on day two we went to the Whakapapa Ski Field where it was raining with an uninspiring weather forecast. Conditions worsened while we were on the chair lift and a squall passed over lowering the temperature and drenching everyone. Visibility dropped and the wind was painful. I had never been snorkellin before, like most of the othe students there, but driven on I enthusiastic teachers, th suffocating heat and Al Thomson's brave example, we a waded out rather inelegantly int the pristine waters with tul body armour of wet-suit, goggle fins and snorkel on . It was a great day out as sunbathed and ate betwee snorkelling (what more is the to life?) and, of course, "studie marine life in it's nature environment"....as was expecte By late afternoon everyone w exhausted and sunburnt as packed up and headed off horn with the exhilarating experien fresh in our minds and vowing come back again for more. 7th Form Environmental Science Camp at Port Waikato When arriving, we were not impressed at the state of the surf club so we began a clean up. After the clean up we all met in the dining room to organise our groups and duties. There we were out in a rural area away from school and school work, but little did we know. After lunch Mrs Sumer handed out some worksheets which we had to complete within two hours. The worksheets included doing such things as drawing transect lines and the profile of the land. The profile gave a good description of the sand dunes. We arrived back to the lodge and began to do our duties. After all the duties were finished dinner was served, there was always enough for everyone and more. After dinner we finished our worksheets while we drank milo and ate biscuits. Next morning we were asked to go for a morning jog before we were allowed breakfast, so most of us guys were back first because we didn't want to miss out. Our next worksheet involved studying the shoreline and all the life that existed just a few centimetres below the surface. While eating our lunch, Mrs Sumer explained that we

would have to hurry to catch the low tide on the rocky shore. We studied the seaweed and animal life. Someone found a centipede about one metre long, also found were Rock Cods and many crabs. When we arrived back to the lodge we had free time. After dinner we finished our worksheets once more and had to hand them in. That night the girls wanted to beat us guys in a game of Pictionary, they were lucky we did not cheat, that's probably why they won. The clean up began on the final day. After everything was packed up and ready for when we leave, our final worksheet was to be completed. We were off to the bird sanctuary where we had to study the behaviour of one particular bird each, we also had to write a paragraph on any particular topic, which had to be creative. For some, this was quite difficult. I enjoyed the camp and so did many of the others, apart from having Mrs Sumer to put up with living among us guys for three days, and was very happy to go home. We'd like to thank Mr M., Mr Rakuraku and Mrs Ng WaiShing for all their help.

SEVENTH FORM HISTORY CAMP In term one the seventh form historians made most of our local history. They visited Papakura and Waiuku museums, the Alexandra Redoubt at Tuakau, Razorback Road (the former Great South Road), the Mt William Lookout as well as pa and battle sites at Meremere and Rangiriri. The historians found the trip educational and enjoyable. All were thrilled by the antics of Michael Savage who almost concussed our head boy, Le Ngo for her "attempt" at jumping a large dugout, Alice O'Brien and her rugby slides, Andrew Smith for letting out some pigs on a farm and for the Island boys plus Shona Holling for rounding the pigs up. 33

THIRD FORM CAMP - TERM ONE We all packed our gear into the two buses and took off for Waharau Camp on Monday morning. It was great going over the Bombay Hills and through all the country I hadn't seen before. My first view of the camp set in the bush was "This is really neat." We all rushed to our cabin and I got a top bunk, then we went outside to have a look around. Next day my group went canoeing down at some big lakes in a gravel pit. All the rest of the group had a great time but I had some difficulty fitting into a canoe so the instructor wouldn't let me go out with the others. In the afternoon it was our turn on the confidence course. This was really scary and some of the things we had to do were hard. I fell off the big rope swing but Mr Grbin and Mr Craig helped me through all the hardest ones. That afternoon my group went sailing in the Optimist yachts down at the beach. I had a go but when I was way out in the bay the boom came over and hit me and knocked me out of the boat. Mr Grbin had to rescue me and tow my boat back to shore as I couldn't get back in.

Next morning it was our turn for the overnight camp. We all had big packs on our backs; we had to carry all our food and sleeping gear so my pack was very heavy. We tramped for five hours, up hills and down valleys, across streams and through thick bush. By the time we got to camp we were all tired and had sore feet. We had to cook our own dinner that night. I made stew and it tasted great. I had a good sleep but some of the others stayed up for most of the night. Next morning we broke camp and marched the five hours back to the cabins. Some of us went for a swim at the beach that afternoon. We all had a big party on the last night; we played games in teams with our but winning some. The buses came next morning and we cleaned up and got back to school in the afternoon. I had a great time but couldn't wait to get home for a sleep. Joey 3GB

BIOLOGY CAMP The moment the bus stopp Mr Parlane started to talk ab work (his favourite subjectt, to think we thought that this es going to be fun! In the course of the we we had to run the Wahara equivalent of the New Yor Marathon in five minutes order to have breakfast. Thi who thought the teachers w joking were in for a big surpris they didn't get breakfast f three days. We didn't have ti to sunbathe on the beach were too busy counting tho damn sandflies amongst t boulders, while up to our elba in algae. In the dead of the night, o shy unsuspecting stude heading back from the abluti block stumbled upon a pregn teacher gorging herself on left-over apple crumble in t kitchen. Little did he know was later to receive the bla for the crime. Another student broke window by throwing a shoe menacing opossum. When as to explain his actions and tt he would have done if he were home, the heroic student, so had tried to save his cabin fri "The Opossum", replied D 0800 80 90 80...", even teacher had to laugh. After this experience we 1; it our duty to offer advice tot year's biologists. 1. If you hate bugs or opossu don't bother coming. 2. Don't you dare put even yo hand out of your cabin wind at night - Mr Parlane 1A ALWAYS be there. (Camouflagi yourself as a tree doesn't wo either), trust us. 3. You are kidding yourself if y titink you'll be able to remerni the names of every bug in I steam. There are more bugs t numbers in the phone-book. And finally... 4. Quadrats do hurt o\ thrown. Takasaki Higashi High School Visit 11 22 August 1992 In the last two weeks of the second term, Manurewa High School hosted a visiting party of three teachers and twelve students from our sister school, Takasaki Higashi High School in Japan. During their stay, the 1 group visited the museum and ' the Expo Pavilion during which time they had an opportunity to try fishing New Zealand style. They also were invited to watch 'My Fair Lady" with the elderly citizens of Manurewa and attended various classes in our school. The weekend was spent with host families, spending some time experiencing a typical kiwi weekend. During the last week, they toured Waitomo and Rotorua where they spent a night on a farm, had a meal at MacDonald's and at Whakapapa they enjoyed a morning's skiing. The host families gathered at the school on the last Friday of term for one final "sayonara" party where we all played typical New Zealand games, sang our national songs, listened to and watched poi dancing. They were farewelled at the airport on Saturday and were a tired, tearful but, we are sure, happy group.

The Homai Resource Room The Homai Resource Room has been an integral part of Manurewa High School since 1966. It was established because of this school's proximity to Homai College. Students who attended this Unit from other parts of New Zealand may board at Homai. In 1992 there are 18 visually impaired and two deaf students in the unit. The Resource Room is staffed by two teachers, Mrs Donna Cox and Miss Ann Crawford, and two teachers aides, Mrs Karen Marr and Mrs Susan Hamblyn. Mrs Hamblyn left at the end of Term 2 and her position was taken over by Miss Jacqui Wilmshurst. The function of the Resource Room is to provide specialist support to the visually impaired students to enable them to achieve their full educational potential and meet their social needs within a mainstream school setting. This support involves braille instruction, keyboard skills, training in relevant technology, mobility,

music, daily living skills and back-up such as braille transcription, large print material, taped material, tactile material, low vision aids and specialised computer equipment. The Resource Room also provides the students with an individual work space and storage for their equipment. The Resource Room staff liaise closely with the teachers of Manurewa High School, in order to anticipate the needs of the students. Over the years this has established a strong partnership between the High School and Homai College. Notable sporting achievements this year include Daniel Te'o participating in the New Zealand Wrestling Championships, Annette Jackson - Potter coming 3rd Form 4 Cross Country Championships, Cameron Marr winning the Senior Boys Swimming Championships and Mary McLeod playing for the First X1 soccer team. Anthony Horvath achieved 4th place in the Form 3 Speech Contest.

FIFTH FORM GEOGRAPHY QUIZ We headed off for round one with Mr Perry nervous but excited about the match. We arrived at McLeans College hopeful but not expecting miracles. Sonya Kumar, Malanie Lockett, Nhuan Ha and myself, with a close finish, gained second against the home team and advanced to round two. With a week of endless revision we were pleased to win this game which took place at Manurewa High. The real challenge was to occur at the Teachers' Praining College with the four finalist schools. Initially, we held second position but dropped back to a close fourth but with good general knowledge we pulled back to third to finish the game with Mcleans first and Papakura High second and Rangitoto fourth. FORM SIX GEOGRAPHY CAMP AT WAHARAU Our first stop en route to Waharau was Foodtown where we were greeted with the sheer bewildering incompetence that has made this country great. After finally doing them the favour of buying their produce we arrived at the one star luxury resort they call Waharau. We unpacked our bare essentials (extra food, radios, hairdryers, fudge for Jonathon "Luke Perry looks like me' Sammons, mirrors and designer wardrobes) all the essential camping gear required to see us through the next three clays at Club Med Waharau. After being summoned by the " Mighty Masters" we had set before us 2 years work to be completed in the next 3 days. After a few of us regained consciousness we set about our tasks with determination dreaming only of the nourishing meal that awaited us at the end of the days rigours. The gourmet cooking which we had been promised by Chef VK turned out to be his "Spaghetti Bolognaise Special" which left us all diving for the nearest water source to cool our burning mouths. One clever student (a long blonde haired surfing type) managed to show his appreciation of the meal by making a string of spaghetti go into his mouth and reappear out of his nose. Geo camp proved to be a change from the comforts of home for most of us. The work stressed us out and the tramping wore us out but we learned some valuable things about Geography and life. The camp was a good way to get to know each other and learn to work as a group and get work completed under pressure. Cooperation of groups was heightened at meal times as tables had to sing in order to be served dinner. All in all it was and enriching experience for all and good fun for most. Thanks to Mr VK, Miss Briggs and Mr Perry for putting up with us all, retaining their sanity and coping with two classes of weird and wonderful students.

6th Form Certificate P.E. Camp For the second year running we went to M.E.R.0 (Marine Education and Recreation Centre) at Longbay from 14 - 18 September. 35 students attended and experienced a wide variety of activities. Being a mainly waterbased course - such activities as kayaking, canoeing, sailing and boogie boarding were ' mastered' as well as abseiling, climbing, orienteering, initiative games and the much enjoyed flying squirrel and faith leap! Not too much can be said about the latter two, for fear of spoiling the surprise for future camps but let it be noted, they are a real blast!

This part of the course is worth 10% of final assessment and all participation was evaluated by leaders and teachers - incorporating social and practical abilities. An overnight camp was fun but it was nice to get back to hot showers and the comfort of modern conveniences. Besides being totally exhausted from three different activities per day, each group faced the challenge of outdoing previous groups' efforts in the kitchen in rotational order - to come up with the best breakfast, lunch or dinner of the week. Let it be noted - the group of '92 will be a hard act to follow!

FIRST FIFTEEN RUGBY The competition started well with a win against Wesley B tries went to our centre Paul Aiolupotea and our fullback Giovanni Miletello. Our first five Scott Penney was as always accurate with his goal kicking with one conversion and two penalties. The rest of the first round did not go so well. We were the youngest and least experienced side in the competition (eleven fifth formers and two fourth formers) and we had a series of narrow losses. Our first game in the second round was against Papakura High School at

Papakura.It was hard, close and exciting. Our winger Kyle Faiers finished off a superb effort by our team with a magnificent try in the corner for us to win 22-17. Papakura were the current holders of the ASB Challenge Trophy for Counties Secondary Schools' First Fifteen, (they had won it off St Stephens who had recently won it off Wesley), so in winning this game we also won the Challenge Trophy. the Counties First Fifteen A division. Despite a great effort we lost our semi-final to Wesley A who went on to win the final against Pukekohe.

We now had one game James Cook High School fi annual ASB Cup and we we were ready. We were p on neutral grounds at Manurewa Rugby Club o last Thursday of term two. muddy and windy. We knew St Stephens wanted to win the Challenge Trophy back for their school so we trained hard all week and entered the game very focused and very determined. At half-time we were up 10-5 thanks to two very good tries to Mark Todd (again he got five tries this season) and to Thomas Vaetoru. We really turned it on in the second half and finished up winning 23-5. We had successfully defended the ASB Challenge Trophy. Next we came against Pukekohe - the Counties 1991 Championship winners. It was a torrid battle. We scored a great team try which went the whole length of the field and through many pairs of hands before being spectacularly finished off by Tony Tulutu. But Pukekohe were too good and finally defeated us and took the trophy.

As the two captains we would like to thank all the players for a fine season of rugby. It's been a pleasure and an honour being captains of such a spirited team. We know that most of you are coming back next year and wish you all the best for a very successful season. We would also like to thank the cheerleaders for their tremendous support for us right through the season in all kinds of weather. Thank you to all the parents who have supported us with transport (and helpful comments from the sideline - Mr Herewini!) and with providing food for the aftermatch functions - a special thanks to Mrs McGavin, Mrs Vaetoru and Mrs Herewini for organising these. 2nd XV Rugby Team This year the 2nd XV rugby team showed some great skills. At the beginning of the season they struggled with having enough players for a team but as the season progressed the team developed into a very skilful side winning four games in a row, beating competition leaders, Wesley College 25 - 10 and beating Papakura High School 34 - 12. One of the advantages of the team was the forward pack consisting of William.F. (Prop), Justin (Hooker), Michael.S. (Prop), David.L (Lock), Riki.L, Number 8 - Tarus, and the two Hankers Kane and Raynor.C. Also the volatile back line consisting of 1st V Johnathan.G and 2nd V Darin, centre Dale.M, fullback David.M, the two wings Kahi and Jason and the scrum half Fonz. Reserves - Riki.L, John.E, Kane.S, Ceaser, David.W and Evan. The team would like to thank the coach White for his help and support through the season. Team record out of 12 games - 8 wins and 4 losses.

SIXTH GRADE RUGBY This has been a highly successful year for our sixth graders. The team has maintained an unbeaten record throughout the season and the boys have individually improved their standard of play. The season started with a less than promising training in the first term where almost everyone showed a good aptitude for dropping the ball. This form was reversed in a pre-season match against Weymouth Under-14's where the sixth grade began their unbeaten streak. The highlight of the season was a 120 victory over St Stephens who proved to be our strongest opposition. Thanks must go to Clinton Herring, the team's assistant coach and manager for his help with trainings, organisation and bringing the drinks. The regular support from parents and family has been a strength of this team and the players and coaches warmly thank them.

UNDER FIFTEEN RUGBY TOURNAMENT - KAITAIA. Kaitaia, in the winterless north, was the venue for the annual North Island Under 15 Rugby Tournament. This tournament sets a very high standard of competition and is an important step in the development of younger players. In 1992 Manurewa High School had a strong squad who were well prepared under the coaching of Mr Williams and Mr Alderton. The team was unbeaten in pool play, beating Hato Petera College, Matamata College and Whangarei Boys' High. In the semi-final we were beaten by the eventual champions Kaitaia College and ended up being placed fourth out of sixteen schools after a play-off with Kamo College. The tournament, and our stay in Mangonui, was successful and enjoyable. Thanks goes to the entire squad for their cooperation and discipline and to the Clendon Family Tavern, the Manurewa High School P.T.A. and the Manurewa Lions for their financial support.

NISSAN MANUREWA CYCLING For our boys and girls cycling teams it was a year of challenges and rebuilding to face the competition on the Auckland waterfront and then at the New Zealand Secondary Schools championships. Competition on the Auckland waterfront was quite fierce as in past years but the girls were still placed second for the trophy. The boys went from strength to strength and ended the year with a strong unit of riders keen to show their skill. Both teams completed the season knowing they had done their best. Well done. A special feature has been the continuing parent support and the sponsorship from NISSAN. To both, thanks very much. Boys: Andrew Smith (Captain), Jason Boulter, David Herman, Jonathon Atkinson, and Andrew Herman. Girls: Alice O'Brien (Captain), Cathy Olsen, Wendy Danks, Katherine Jurey and Kelly Boulter. During the season we also had support from Kirsten Clarke and Terri Hansford. Coaching assistance also came from former Manurewa High rider Brett Olsen. Jason Boulter showed his ability during the 1992 season to win the under 16 New Zealand 2000m track pursuit. He was also placed 3rd in the 4000m track scratch pursuit and 3rd in the 35 kilometre road race. Both teams appreciated the leadership shown by the captains. —Mr Yardley and Miss Innes

Boys Hockey Due to lack of numbers at the start of the year we were able to field only one team. At the end of the grading games at the start of the year the team ended up playing in the B competition. Once the competition got under way, the team made up its mind that losing was not going to be an option. Throughout the course of the year there was a steady and marked improvement in skills and understanding of the game by all the players. Mark Simmons provided great leadership while Malcolm Frith injected strong drive and some very heady play to give the team a framework to base its game on. Marc Dixon helped give the forwards a steady supply of useful ball. Gavin MacDonald and Peter Simmons proved to be the most lethal goal scorers with Gavin getting quite greedy when

the mood beset him. Roshan Patel, Ryan Wells, Martin Brewer and Glenn Bradbury all proved to be valuable members of the side. Mark MacDonald was an asset to the side in goal. Marcus Leslie, Garrett Wong, Cameron Frith and Gavin Taylor all improved markedly as the season progressed and will be great assets to the side next year. Finally the team owes a great deal of thanks to the loyal support provided by Mrs Simmons and Mrs Dixon firstly for providing transport and secondly for enriching the sideline with their own unique brand of vocal support. Cheerleading This year was the beginning of the Manurewa High School Cheerleading Team. The trials were held early this year and out of these trials 18 girls were picked - and NO, they weren't all tall, blonde haired and blue-eyed stereotype cheer girls. We trained two days a week, each training two hours long. Each girl paid for their own uniform, Mrs Boxall helping to make the skirts. Our first game was against Wesley - and didn't turn out as we expected. We weren't welcomed greatly by all our supporters. Gradually, however we soon became accepted by not only the boys, but also the public - the highlight of the season being asked to appear on a float for the Manurewa Rugby Club in a parade for the Ranfurly Shield Game - Counties vs Auckland. We made our debut by appearing for a short time on One Network News! We had a great season supporting our 1st XV - rain, hail or shine, win or lose. Thanks to everyone for accepting us as a sports team and supporting us this year. The girls enjoyed the season - especially the after functions and thanks, most of all, to them for all their hard work and dedication.

BOYS' FIRST XI SOCCER The 1992 soccer season was one of rebuilding. The team ended the season as runners-up in the Manukau Secondary Schools Competition losing just one game. The team always gave 100% and at all times were and mature in their actions both in and out of school. Even though the team sometimes struggled to field a full side, they always gave their best and were rewarded with some excellent results. Philip Paterson in goal was in outstanding form this season and was always willing to put his body on the line if it benefitted the team's cause. Andrew O'Sullivan was solid at centre back, Brendon Rout improved every game and showed huge amounts of courage where he lacked a little in skill. Steve Brindle gave 110% in all games until an unfortunate injury put him out for the rest of the season. Scott Anderson matured into a senior player and his skill on sub-standard pitches was a sight to behold. Patrick Overall saw rare ball through the season, but never the less impressed with his skill and cultured left

foot. Patrick O'Sullivan filled in at many positions where we needed to plug gaps. Glen Turner upfront scored some great goals and when we managed to prise Kyle Faiers away from the First Fifteen Rugby team we had a potent striking force. Kyle Faiers scored an excellent hat-trick against James Cook in his first game back. The most impressive find of the season was fourth former Hamish McDonald. Hamish showed his excellent skill and maturity in handling older and bigger players. He played in every game and never failed to impress others by his determination and skill. Other players to help out the team were Dwane Morgan, Leighton Steele, Andrew Smith, Troy Field and Kurt Watkins. The highlights of the season were the 6-0 win over James Cook and the 3-1 win over Manukau Champs, Wesley College. On behalf of the team I would like to thank Mr Lane and Mr Cook for their time and effort in training, Mrs LeQuesne for transport and refreshments and finally to the Manurewa High School ground staff. SECOND XI SOCCE The 1992 season did not s off very well, losing our fi game 9-0. The next few games w lost, but very narrow improvement showing dun each game. The best game probably against the top to Wesley College losing 1-0. late inclusions to the team games improved only losing Pukekohe 5-3. Our first came in our last game of season, with goals by Neil B Brett and a winning goal Leighton Steele resulting in a win against Rosehill College. We hope to be back year, and to be placed in the five.

1st AND 2nd XI GIRLS SOCCER REPORT 1 992 The recently completed soccer season proved to be one of the most successful in the school's recent history. Once again the team faced the challenge of integrating a number of players who had never played soccer before with a group of skilled and experienced players. The new members adapted quickly and proved invaluable as the season progressed. This was illustrated in our first match against Rosehill College which the team won 2-1. Both of our goals were scored by Megan McDonald, one of the new recruits. In the South Auckland A division the girls recorded three wins, two draws and a loss to Rosehill College by 2-1. The draws against Pukekohe helped to secure a share of first place and joint winners of the A division trophy with Pukekohe High School. This was only the second occasion since 1981 that Pukekohe had not won the trophy outright. The 1st XI was successfully led by Captain Leanne Boxall and Vice-Captain

Toaila Pasi. These two players proved not only to be fine individual performers but inspirational team leaders. The backs (Jenny Hellyer, Tania Rankin, Mary McLeod, Karen Halse, Charleen Ellis and JulieAnn Mack) were a sound unit throughout the season and provided an excellent platform from which to build attacks. The midfield players (Toaila Pasi, Isobel McGeady, Cushla McDonald and Lisa Woodman) were skilled and set up much quality possession for the strikers. Our strikers (Leanne Boxall, Megan McDonald and Carolina Tiumalu) played with flair to set up some excellent goals. Carolina a new arrival from Form 3 ended the season as top goal scorer and an exciting prospect for the future. Finishing first equal in South Auckland qualified the girls to participate in the "Top Ten" competition to determine the best girls team in Auckland. The team defeated Mahurangi College 2-0 and then lost to Mount Roskill and Howick. One

of the most satisfying aspects of the '92 season was the introduction of a MHS 2nd XI into the competition. They were mainly girls drawn from the third and fourth forms and many had never played soccer before. They won all their competition games and defeated a number of senior girls teams from South Auckland. They participated in a quadrangular tournament earning creditable victories over Avondale and Howick 2nd XI teams. Thanks must go to Mr Reeves for his enthusiasm and dedication throughout the season. OPEN A NETBALL TEAM

The season began well with many trials before the teams were finalised. Everybody decided that practices would be at 7.15 a.m. when we would all be fresh and ready to concentrate on the necessary skills. We played in the Manukau Secondary Schools Competition and although we had our share of losses we showed determination and often after being down at half time we came very close to winning games. The competition was enjoyed by all. The season was topped off with the Coca Cola Papakura Tournament and the ASB Tournament at the Windmill Road courts where teams as far away as Whangarei competed. Thanks to Mrs Cernohorsky for her overall running of netball within the school and the following coaches for their time and effort: Miss Day, Miss Collings, Mr Hodgson and Mrs Shaw. SENIOR A NETBALL The season got off to a good start with trials after school involving nine keen players. We took part in the North Shore Secondary Schools Netball Tournament and the Papakura Tournament. We also competed in the Manukau Netball Tournaments which were held on Wednesday evenings. Overall, we had a successful time with special thanks to Miss Day for all her efforts. NEW IMAGE RUGBY SQUAD- SOUTH AUCKLAND CHAMPIONS Sprints, push-ups, star-jumps and more sprints! These were just some of the orders we heard from our coach. After last year's losses we fought back with vengeance against the negative vibes. We started the year with a positive attitude from our coach, Mr Dean Adams, assistant coach Jeremy Adams, stand-in coach Glen Hill, orange boy Jarrad McKay and Manager Robyn Osborn. The "never-scare team" were determined to succeed. At the inaugural tournament in Papakura we made the finals against Pukekohe High and with determination we won and got our name on the trophy. The following training sessions were hard and no mercy was shown by the coach and that helped us win the trophy at the counties Championships held at the Pukekohe Stadium. Again there was fierce competition but our team work and ball handling skills showed through and won this event making us Counties champs. Then followed the Auckland championships held at the Carlton Rugby Club and we

came fourth. In all, we had a great season displaying talent and style resembling that of the All Blacks. AUCKLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL TRAMPOLINE There were 171 entrants tl year in the Auckland Seconda School trampoline competitir Manurewa has won the cup the Elite Mens section for t past five years. Former pupil Brent Petrie y awarded a miniature cup I winning this competition ihi years in a row in 1988, 1989 a 1990. BADMINTON The badminton season began in March with large numbers of students crowding into the gym to play on Friday lunchtime and after school. From these students five teams were selected to compete in the interschool competitions played on Friday evenings in term two. The most successful team was the Senior Boys A team of Jamie Pere, Max Michaeli from Germany), Jonathon Chappell and Nicholas Taylor. The team easily won their section of the competition and then won the play-off against Rosehill in a very exciting match. The score was 5 3 to Manurewa making our boys the winner of the Senior Boys Competition for 1992. A great team effort. The Junior Boys team led by Geoffrey McCarthy also won their section of the competition but were beaten in their final play-off to finish the season as runners-up in the competition. The remaining three teams all played well taking their share of wins and losses. 52

In August players competed in the girls and boys school singles competition with winners being: Girls singles, Natasha King. Boys Singles, Geoffrey McCarthy. The boys singles was a nail biting match between Geoffrey and Jonathon Chappell with a final 23-22 result. Congratulations to the players who represented Counties in local and national competitions. SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS AT MT RUAPEHU New Zealand Secondary Schools Ski Championships, Whakapapa, Mt Ruapehu, 21-23 September, 1992. For the first time Manurewa High entered a team into the secondary schools ski championships. The members were Malcolm Frith, Sarah Cridland, Kerri Haybittle, Kally Bainbridge, David and Lucy Barr. This is the biggest ski competition in New Zealand with 120 schools and 600 skiers taking part. Four courses were set and after day one's giant slalom event the team was placed 107th which was a good effort considering the lack of racing experience and only 8 to 15 seconds between 1st and 107th. A head-to-head slalom was held on the second day and the team was placed 109th. Special thanks to Mr Menzies for organising the team, to the parent support crew of Mr Barr, Mr and Mrs Cridland, Mr and Mrs Haybittle and to the National Park Ski Club for allowing us to stay at their lodge. Lee Kyle Faiers Fielding an inexperienced team for the 1991 - 1992 season, the Manurewa High School First XI started off well with a convincing win over Papakura High School, the attack spearheaded by the medium pacers Philip Paterson and Paul Marshall. The team was soundly beaten though by a Rosehill College First XI who won the game through awesome batting depth, but to our credit, captain Brett LeQuesne scored a well deserved half - century. Looking for a final win before winter, Manurewa High faced a well balanced Wesley XI. Unable to answer the fearsome Wesley attack, Manurewa, out for 100, looked thoroughly beaten but early breakthroughs by Paterson and Iki Falanitule had Wesley reeling at 3/13 before their middle order tore apart the bowling attack. The inexperience showed in our defeats despite valiant attempts. Special mention should go to Paul Marshall, a junior in the First XI who was inspirational in the field and the rest of the team who always put in their best efforts.
