Principal's Message 1991 saw the school roll at Manurewa High School stabilise at 1630 students. Numbers in the senior school continued to increase, with many undertaking multi level studies. An enrolment scheme has had to be adopted because Manurewa High School has been deemed to be an "overcrowded" school where the demand for places exceeds facilities available. I am delighted at the large number of students wishing to attend our school as out-of-zone placements.

To keep pace with technological developments, Manurewa High School has endeavoured to expand and update our equipment base. A further two computer rooms were added, and the electronic typewriters are in the process of being replaced with wordprocessors. I am conscious of the need to ensure that our students are given every advantage in education, and I thank all parents and students who supported our fundraising events throughout the year, especially the walkathon, which has made the purchase of this equipment possible During 1991 our students again achieved excellence in all their activities, and certainly exemplified the mission statement of "the pursuit of excellence where individuals are challenged to reach their full potential".

This was borne out by the report on the school during 1991 by the Education Review Office (which has replaced the former Secondary Inspectorate). The review team stated that ... "the students are friendly co-operative and settled into positive learning programmes the school is setting clear expectations of students in terms of behaviour and attitudes and these are being met. The school is held in high regard by the community for its achievements in external examinations, its emphasis on hard work and discipline, and the value that it places on sporting and cultural activities".

The Review Team also found that there are many opportunities for students to develop their potential within a range of academic, sporting and cultural activities. Entries and awards in many of the regional and national competitions continue to grow each year. Mathex, Auckland Science Fair and Science Crest awards continue to be dominated by students from Manurewa High School. In the sporting and cultural areas accolades continue to be given to many individuals and teams for their efforts during the year.

Staffing has stabilised at our school, with only one long serving staff member, Mr I Bargh, HOD Social Studies, leaving at the end of the year.

He has made a great contribution to the school, not only as HOD Social Studies, but also in co-ordinating and coaching boys hockey and also the World Vision fundraising appeals.

1991 was once again a year of rapid educational change, with many major revision and reviews being undertaken by the Education authorities. The areas of senior school curriculum, school certificate examination and senior school qualifications are under review. Added to this are the proposed drastic cuts in staffing and bulk funding of teachers' salaries to schools. We have had much to contend with, but through it all, our staff have confirmed to provide the best possible educational opportunities for our students.

My thanks to the staff and to the groups that have supported the school during the year, particularly the Board of Trustees, Parent Teachers Association, and the newly revitalised Past Pupils Association.

STAFF NOTES 1991 At the start of the 1991 school year the following staff members took up new positions at Manurewa High School: Mr D Bargh (Maths), Mr J Buys (Science) Miss V Collings (Accounting) Mr P Cooke (LAD) Mr C Davies (English) Miss C Day ( Typing/PE) Mrs C Dimery ( Accounting) Mrs S Kop ( Accounting/Economics) Miss P McDougall (Art) Mr R Metcalfe (Science) Mr K Millet (PE) Mr M Platt (Technical) Mr R Rieter ( Chemistry) and Ms V Townsend ( Art). During the term Mr Buys left to return, to the South Island. His position was taken by Mr M Ayres. Mr Griffith from the Science Department also resigned for personal reasons and his position was taken by Mrs J Mason.

Mr G Martyn was appointed to HOD Music of Rosmini College. His place was taken by Mr J Brown.

At the end of Term I, Miss Curruthers left from the Home Economics Department to take up a full time position at Weymouth Intermediate; Mrs J Eagle to raise a family, and Mrs T Murdie, who had been relieving in the LAD Department.

At the commencement of Term II we welcomed back to the staff Mrs C Hayward in the LAD Department and Mrs K Cernohorsky in the Home Economics Department.

During the middle of the term Mni N Davis was appointed to a relieving position in the Home Economics Department and Mr Salt replaced Mr Brown in the Mathematics Department.

At the end of Term II we farewelled Mrs V Singh and Mrs B Waterhouse on maternity leave and Mr A Jeanes who had been on a years exchange at the school.

At the commencement of Term II Mr M Whickman commenced in the Mathematics Department. Mrs S

Impey took up a relieving position in the Accounting/Economics Department and Mr I Bargh returned from a years teacher exchange in England to resume duties in the Social Studies Department.

During Term III Mrs Hayward left on maternity leave and Mrs T Murdie resumed teacher duties in the LAD Department. Mr C Davies and Ms V Townsend are returning to England after completing a years teacher exchange in the school. At the time of writing this report the following staff have resigned, or indicated their intention to do so: Mr I Bargh who has been Head of Social Studies since his appointment to the position in 1976 and Mrs E Parry who has been in a part time position for the Typing Department. To these staff and any others who are leaving, we thank you for your contribution while you were with us and wish you every success for the future.

DENNIS ADRIAN COLES

Gonna Weir 7KL

10 December 1935 - 23 April 1991 Dennis Coles was a teacher at this school for 23 years, until his retirement at the end of 1990. Dennis was tragically killed in a motor accident on 23 April this year. At the time he was serving in the work of his church, a mission which had taken on a great significance in his life, and in retirement had become full time.

His total involvement in the school was demonstrated by the large number of pursuits and projects referred to in the retirement tribute to him in the 1990 school magazine. A desire to improve the school environment was a natural result of a lifetime interest in nature, and concern for people. Dennis was keenly interested in tramping and enjoyed being in native bush. During University years he tramped in the South Island and in January 1984 had a memorable holiday with his wife, Maureen, when they walked the Milford Track.

Amongst his skills and interests was a love of building. A self-taught carpenter he undertook many projects which he completed to a superb standard. Music was also one of his great interests. He played the organ regularly at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church over a period of 19 years.

Dennis was involved in scouting and received the Queen's Scout award. He was actively involved in the Inter-School Christian Fellowship groups throughout his teaching career. His last involvement was assisting as a camp cook on Ponui Island with Maureen in January 1991.

Dennis retired early at the end of 1990 because of a voice loss over the last 18 months of his teaching.

His passing was a tremendous shock to staff and pupils of the school who had come to know and respect Dennis for his friendship, teaching ability and humanity.

He is survived by his wife Maureen and three children, Juliet, Gregory and Rosalind.

ENGLISH THEATRE VISITS A combined group from both Form 6 English and Drama classes started their year's course by attending a production of "Hunting the Heart" at the University's Maidment Theatre.

For those studying Shakespeare's " The Tempest" there was an enchanting evening at the open air performance in the University grounds.

In June 6th and 7th Formers gained deeper insight into " The Crucible" by Arthur Miller at the Mercury Theatre.

Third and Fourth Formers joined seniors at the Mercury for their presentation of "The Merchant of Venice".

Among outings to films was a trip to "Hamlet" starring Mel Gibson.

Miss Cathy Downes brought to the school her extended solo role play of the character of Katherine Mansfield, including readings of her stories.

PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST

A record number of entries at all levels provided a lively series of inter-class fmals.

Many topics were refreshingly different from the conventional, with the small group of contestants selected by the judges, managing their impromptu topics with commendable skill.

Mrs Kelly Bailey of International Training in Communication kindly agreed to judge the Seventh Form contest and invited the placegetters to speak at the Association's meeting at Nathan Homestead.

Corey Scott F7 and Anne Wilson F6, represented the school at the annual South Auckland Contest at Saint Stephens College. Both were commended.

SIXTH FORM CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITIONS This year the sixth form had the opportunity to take part in two inschool creative writing competitions.

The term one challenge was to write a short story. Mrs Sanson, the reading teacher at school was the judge. She commented that she enjoyed reading all the stories submitted by the sixth form English teachers, and she saw merit in all of them. She particularly liked the diversity of themes and the individual way each was handled by the authors.

The winner was Anne Wilson with her story called "But No-one Answered".

Second was Edwin Wright with a story entitled "Jordie the Kid". Third equal were Malcolm Rodgers (The Silent Street) and Nathaniel Robson (The Neon Initiation).

Others in the final ten were, in no particular order, Annette Ackland, Lisa MacFarlane, Robert McGavin, Jane Cousins, Carol Michael and Jane Burgess.

In term two the students tried their hands at poetry. Mr Marr agreed to adjudicate, no easy task. His comments were that there were some very effective images and strong feelings were evident.

First place went to Eli Weir, followed

by Joanne Tait, Rochelle Channing, Patrick O'Sullivan, and Geoff Vessell.

Highly recommended were Jean Kelly, Carly Bishop, Le Ngo, Phil Paterson, Bao Tran, Selena Hansen, Carol Michael, and Mary Beachan.

Congratulations to all those students.

He ng round in his chair and viewed control panel, and then looked up ie screen again. He pressed a few tons and then locked into his let. Ever since Charlie had died 1 taked over the control panel. He good, very good, and he knew it. :ew buzzers beeped, and Bishop lined his face in anticipation. "Shit, ssed." There weren't many of them 't on the submarine now, only mself and a few others but the mputer did most of the work. It was st the targeting and programming at they were needed for. Suddenly a :avy blast knocked the side of the Lb. He held onto his chair for all he as worth, but his head slumped irward and banged on the cold metal. le was lost for a few minutes, nconscious in a sweeping delirium of tuzzing alarms, and flashing buttons. ie opened his eyes, still a bit dazed he urveyed the damage report. It was ,ad, but the sub was still functioning.

He leant forward and viewed the scanner screen. They were coming in fast for another attack. He quickly zeroed in on their position, programmed it in, adjusted dials, and leant forward to press the bright red `fire' button, and with a malevolent grin, he paused and said "Die suckers." His face froze in time as he waited for what seemed like an eternity before he heard the explosion, and the deep thunderous splash of water. It was like music to his ears. He let out a primitive war cry. "We've done it. We got them. We got them," he cried as he turned around to tell his shipmates.

No-one answered.

He left his station and echoed his cries of victory through the dark empty halls. "Pete, Mack, we've done it, he cried, but no-one answered. Finally he came across Mack in the weapons room, sitting in his chair. "Mack, they're dead. We got them at long last." He turned the chair around, and Mack's blood stained face stared back at him. "Mack! Mack!" he cried but no-one answered. He found Pete in the repairs unit, his skull almost split in two after hitting the metal panel.

"Pete," he cried out, but no-one answered. It was not too long before he before he found the other bodies.

He cried to them too but no-one

answered.

Suddenly his victory did not seem that important, snce he had no-one to share it with. He decided to he'd better survey the enemies wreckage for traces of survivors.

He geared the sub into position, and let it chug its way along. God, the ship needed repairs badly, he thought.

A whole pile of electric sparks was streaming from around the corner. He was lucky it was still moving. He finally reached the spot where his enemy had lost. He opened up the hatch and stared out. Nothing, he thought, and then he saw him. One survivor, holding on desperately to a piece of wreckage, bobbing up and down with the waves and spluttering out the salty 'water.. The sub came nearer. He could see his face. The man gave a wave and a half-hearted grin. Bishop hated him instantly. It was because of him he no longer had a crew, it was because of him and his damn country that the whole war had started. Why should he live? Why? He pulled the gun from his side and aimed it at the man. His half-hearted grin vanished. His face became pale. the air became still and there was no sound except the lapping of the sea against the sub. It was policy to save prisoners of war, to save this undefended man. Damn policy. The gunshot pierced the air with its severity and the man fell back to become a victim of the sea. 'Bastard," spat Bishop as an afterthought.

He climbed down to the control panel.

It was time to go home. It had been a long journey. No doubt he would be called to fight on another sub, on another mission, in this bloodthirsty, on-going war. He decided to call in his mission. He knew the procedure.

Mission completed, no survivors found. He radioed in, and was ready to speak when a tape recorded message blurted out. "The war is over. On April the 3rd 1998 our president pressed the button to launch a nuclear war. A massive nuclear war followed.

If there are any survivors please contact intelligence. This message will be broadcast over all TV, radio and satellite signals. Thank you. The war is over..."

Bishop couldn't believe it, a nuclear war. Where? How? Why wasn't he affected. Of course it would take some time for the radiation to spread into the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and

it would be the countries that would be hit, not a lone sub out in the ocean. He glanced around. Any survivors, that's me, he thought. He quickly rang intelligence. It was a number everyone had been taught to learn in case of emergencies, and boy, this was an emergency. A tape recorded computer voice came over the phone: "What is your name?" There was a pause.

"Lieutenant Bishop Johnson." There was a whirring sound as his name was recorded in memory. Then the voice spoke again "Your position?" Damn these computers. He just wanted to find the other survivors.

"The Pacific Ocean" he answered hurriedly. He probably should have given the computer his exact position, but it was not important. The whirring sounded again.

"Information stored."

There was a pause. "List of survivors so far ..." The computer paused as it reached into its memory. "Oh God," thought Bishop, I'm not going to have to sit through a whole lot of names am I?" The computer began to speak: "Total...one survivor...name, Lieutenant Bishop Johnson ...position, Pacific ocean.." Bishop waited to hear more but there was a beep as the phone clicked dead. One survivor, no, it can't be, one survivor. The damned computer must be wrong he thought.

Suddenly his mind went dead. He was alone in the world. There was no-one else. He was the last person alive as far as he knew. He phoned the computer fifty-five times that night but all he heard was the same answer, one survivor. He went out on to the top of the sub and stared out at the floating body he had killed that morning. " Why did I kill him?" he thought.

Why, why ...why, he cried...but noone answered.

1990 DUX KIM NEWTON

The 1990 dux was Kim Newton. In his congratulatory speech at the 1990 Senior Prizegiving Simon McKearney, the head boy, began by saying "I could have written this speech four years ago, at the end of form three." Such was Kim's reputation as an outstanding scholar.

1991 MANUKAU LEADERSHIP

Kim Newton was one of New Zealand's top scholars in the 1990 University Bursaries examinations. Kim was one of only 36 students nation wide who gained scholarships in all five subjects. On the afternoon of Wednesday April Kim was the only student from a South 10, 1991, the six 6th form prefects Auckland school to achieve this packed their bags, and, along with Miss milestone; her marks were : Biology Moore, headed out to Whatapaka 90, Chemistry 93, Mathematics with Marae, Karaka, for the 1991 Manukau Leadership Seminar.

Over the next three days we were involved in a series of workshops and activities. These included communication skills, organisation and goal setting, a simulation exercise in which we as the Board of Trustees of a newly established school outlined our goals and objectives for the year, and a forum "Towards the Year 2000".

All in all it was an extremely enjoyable and beneficial experience.

WORD PROCESSING SKILLS TAUGHT TO ALL THIRD FORMERS All third formers at Manurewa High School have instruction in keyboard skills. "With the rapid advancement of technology in the workplace, it is important that students keep pace," said Miss Perjanik, the teacher in charge of the course. She points out that many occupations now require some knowledge of basic keyboard and computer skills.

Apart from basic keyboarding, students learn how to save work on a word processor, how to edit their work and how to print it. They also learn basic computer functions.

There are now thirty two word processors available for this purpose, contributing to a network of forty six computers available in the school, as well as ten Omegas in the Experience Unit.

Miss Perjanik believes that the technology available in the workplace should be used efficiently. To do so school leavers must have good keyboard skills. From this year, all Manurewa students will have the opportunity to acquire them.

Selling chocolates, word cards and Cook Island pareaus has helped Manurewa High School's Market Force company reach the semifinals of the Young Enterprise Scheme.

Market Force is the only South Auckland student company to reach the semi finals. Twenty school companies now compete for the five places in the final.

Market Force was formed in March this year by the sixth and seventh form Business Studies students.

The company started by selling fancy chocolate, and in the third term, Cook Island pareaus.

A third product, word cards used for studying, were also sold.

The Young Enterprise Scheme was established to give students first hand experience in running a business. This year more than eighty schools participated.

Company officers were Kerry Robertson, Director, Kylie Scrimgeour, Secretary, and Thomas Vaetoru, Sales and Marketing Director.

SCIENCE 1991 SCIENCE FAIR This year it was required for 3,4,5 and 6 form students to design and present a science project as part of their syllabus, and as a result many outstanding projects with topics as diverse as 'Washing detergents' and 'The Ozone', came forward to compete in the school fair.

A number of certificates were awarded and the best projects were selected for exhibition at the Manurewa Public Library for one week. They then went on to represent Manurewa High School in the South Auckland Zonal Science Fair, which was held at our school.

Our projects were competing in 14 categories with other schools from the South Auckland zone for a chance to enter the Auckland Regional Science Fair.

After a lot of contemplating by the judges and alot of waiting by the entrants, Manurewa High School was able to send fourteen projects to compete with 327 entries from 64 schools from the Auckland region for cash prizes up to the value of $2000, at the 1991 Auckland Science Fair.

The day of judging arrived and hopeful MHS students assembled at Auckland's MOTAT Science Technology Centre to convince the judges that our school is the best.

They got the message, for our students received SEVEN first prize awards and many highly commended awards.

Among these was the MOTAT travel award, won by Bruce Smith of form 5 with his project on 'Hydroponics Design and Construction.' These awards certainly did prove that our school is one of the best in Auckland.

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all the science teachers, students and parents who made this year's science fairs so worthwhile.

500TH NEW ZEALAND CREST AWARD

GOAT ISLAND TRIP

Sixth Former Clair Wilton has recently received New Zealand's 500th Bronze CREST Award for her project on the Greenhouse effect.

On Sunday February 24 a group of Manurewa High School Seventh Form Biology students and a collection of teachers under the expert guidance of Mrs Christine Howard ventured up to Leigh and beyond to the marine reserve of Goat Island. There is an island a leap across from the rocky shelves of the shore but that was not the real attraction.About forty people, clad in unfamiliar wet suits , flippers and snorkles waded awkwardly like backward moving ducks out into the warm clear waters. Others, looking very confident and assured, moved in more gracefully. However you got into the water, the magic that occurred once you were in, is superb. Fish of all different colours and sizes swim about your legs, brushing against you, eating the frozen peas from your fingers.

Sometimes they even nibble your fingers. You have ventured into another world. Even the fright of swallowing mouthfulls of salt water as you struggle to control the mouthpiece of the snorkle cannot detract from the beauty and wonder of what you see.

For many in the Manurewa High School party it was their first venture into snorkling. Mrs Howard has taken a senior group up in February for the last three years. The numbers wishing to go with her are increasing each year as the word spreads. It is a marvellous introduction to a new world.

CREST stands for Creativity in Science and Technology and rewards creativity, perseverance and application of scientific ideas. Awards are made at three levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold.

At each level the student must complete a project and meet certain criteria.

Manurewa High School has an exceptional record in CREST Awards.

Since joining the scheme in 1989 54 pupils have been awarded bronze awards, over 10% of all awards in New Zealand.

Claire set out to prove that Carbon gas is responsible for the earth's warming.

Claire's approach was to construct two perspex domes. Inside the inner dome she arranged a heater (a simple resistance wire connected to a couple of batteries) and the temperature on the inside of the outer dome was measured with a digital thermometre probe.

The gap between the two domes represented the gases in the upper atmosphere.

Initially the gap contained air and the temperature changes were recorded, then the gap was filled with carbon dioxide (from a fire extinguisher) and the experiment was repeated.

The results obtained were not conclusive even after several repetitions.

How ever the final results are not necessaily the main objective of a CREST project. In getting to this final stage Clairehad to solve many problems: How do you simulate a global problem?

How do you contain a layer of carbon dioxide?

How do you create an initial heat source inside the inner dome?

How do you stop convection currents?

How do you measure the temperature inside a perspex dome?

MARINE RESERVES OUR HERITAGE

MATHEMATICS AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION 1991 The students again competed with nearly half a million others from NZ, Australia and the Pacific Basin in this highly regarded competition.

Just on 50% of our students who competed gained a Credit or a Distinction Certificate. There were 41 Credit Certificates and 17 Distinction Certificates awarded.

The majority of the questions were set to test basic manipulation and problem solving skills in arithmetic, algebra and goemetry. This competition not only depends upon calculating the correct answer but the competitor loses a proportion of the marks for each question incorrectly answered. This is to discourage excessive guessing and to encourage greater responsibility and accuracy from the student.

The best student in our school was Marina McCartney from 4SM who had a high overall score and the least number of mistakes. She achieved a 96 percentile ranking.

Simon Campbell 5GL and Paula West 6BR also achieved a 96 percentile ranking, but made more errors.

MATHEMATICS PROJECTS ON DISPLAY AT MANUREWA LIBRARY

We have had an interesting and bu year whose first highlight was tl hosting of the South Aucklat Mathematics Quiz in April. This reported in another article in th magazine.

Our Junior Projects were displayed the Manurewa Public Library at tl end of May and the best of these we, sent to the Mathex Competition MOTAT in July. For the first time fi several years, we did not win any pia in the display section although of third form quiz team were 7th overall.

Each year the school has student taking part in two major competition Several senior students sat the 131s1; competition and three were goo, enough to be sent in to the regions heats. A record number of 120 enterer the Australian Mathematic competition. We will receive the results in the third term.

Manurewa Public Library displayed the best of Manurewa High School's Junior Mathematics Projects.

The display included colourful and original items, from patchwork to games and posters. There were about one hundred items on display.

The best of the projects were sent into the Auckland Mathex Competition was held at MOTAT in July.

Every student whose work was in the display received a certificate of merit.

EXCHANGE IMPRESSIONS IMPRESSIONS Coming on exchange to N.Z. as an English teacher, it is regrettable that I should begin my impressions with a cliche...But I have to say emphatically, "New Zealand is a beautiful country."

Initially I was stunned by the brightness of the light after the slight haziness of Britain.

The lush vegetation, the clear lakes, the endless beaches, the noble mountains were all magnificent, and fulfilled my expectations. Indeed, wherever I travelled, North and South, I came to expect natural beauty...

It was then that little things began to irritate one - rubbish at beauty spots; rusty cars and machinery abandoned in fields; urban sprawl consuming more and more territory. These are European problems; I had hoped that New Zealand with its small population, might be spared these dubious signs of `civilisation'. Then on television I saw an advertisement alerting people to problems of pollution affecting New Zealand.

I became aware of the government wrestling eith the reality of economic difficulties and struggling to decide who might suffer.

At the root of my anxiety was a feeling of warmth for the marvellous students and colleagues I have had the pleasure of meeting; I sincerely hope that they will protect the wonderful natural heritage of New Zealand, and that the country will succeed economically to the mutual benefit of all social and racial groups...

AN EXCHANGE TEACHER'S TALE FROM CANTERBURY "All my bags are packed" How time flies. The year's exchange to teach geography and Social Studies at MHS has passed so quickly, which is a sure sign that it has been worthwhile.

It has been an eventful year personally, for world events, for New Zealand teachers and education. And there are other changes to come, no doubt.

Living in New Zealand for a year mu give an insight into its many culture attitudes and aspirations. My your] family have greatly enjoyed all the pre-schol activities and their eas settling undoubtedly contributed to smooth exchange.

Essentially ten year travelling/activities are crammed int one year. Images that will remai include two nights camping ii Murchison cemetery, white-wate rafting, the 'Trots", the sands o Golden Bay, jet-boating, sausage sizzles, and the magnificen Coromandel Peninsula - to name just few.

An August to August exchange bre all the rules - and thanks to Thomson and the MHS Board f sanctioning it. A great adventure learning experience.

MY YEAR IN CANTERBURY, ENGLAND Simon Langton Boys School is very different from Manurewa High.

Where we are a comprehensive, coeducational, multi-racial school, the Langton is a grammar school, single sex and very English school. It receives only 96 new entrants in Form One, many of whom stay at the school for seven years. Even Form One boys wear long trousers, ties and blazers.

The reading ability and work rate is generally very high, and the academic record in 0 level (similar to SC) and A level exams (similar to Bursary) is impressive.

There is a very high level of participation in music, both instumental and choral, with excellent results. Participation in sport is also high, with excellent soccer, hockey and cricket teams. The boys also compete with other schools in swimming, crosscountry, rugby, tennis and chess.

I found the boys less relaxed than our own friendly pupils. They were more demanding and competitve, backed by strong parental support.

The staff were talented, hardworking, tolerant and friendly, with a strong sense of humour. They seemed to have a soft spot for New Zealand, and were almost in awe of our All Blacks.

I had to work hard to keep up with the lively students at the Langton, but found the work stimulating, especially the field trips to Yorkshire with the Sixth Form, and to North Wales with a Third Form group. I learnt a great deal, and brought back valuable resources such as videos and task sheets.

Besides the valuable experiences at the Langton, I was able to travel widely in Britain and Europe. We visited castles, abbeys, cathedrals, Oxford and Cambridge universities, saw jousting, London shows and attended a garden party with Princess Margaret. I even climbed Snowden and Ben Nevis.

I could ramble on and on, but its enough to say the year was both valuable and exciting. I was sad to leave England, but it's great to be back in the best country of all.

After many hours of practise and rehearsal, the students who modelled in the 199 Fashion Parade once again excelled themselves. Sacrifice and commitment ensure success, pride and confidence. Good ambassadorship has gained ongoing prai and support from retailers and sponsors alike.

The decision to hold this year's parade over two evenings was a wise move an enabled a more relaxed, less crowded environment to enhance an atmosphere anticipated excitement.

Appreciation must be extended to the comperes, staff, Parent Teache Association, parents, students, past pupils and last but not least, the paying pub As always it was another wonderful success.

THE HOMAI RESOURCE ROOM The Homai Resource Room has been an integral part of Manurewa High School since 1966. It was established because of this school's proximity to Homai College, and is the only Unit of its type in New Zealand. Thus students who attend this Unit from other parts of New Zealand may board at Homai.

In 1991 there are 17 visually impaired and one deaf student in the Unit.

The Resource Room is staffed by two teachers, Mrs Jill Farmer and Miss Ann Crawford, and a teacher's aide, Mrs Karen Marr.

The function of the Resource Room is to provide specialist support to the visually impaired students to enable them to achieve their full educational potential and meet their social needs within a mainstream school setting.

This support involves braille instruction, keyboard skills, training in relevant technology, mobility, music, daily living skills, back-up teaching and a programme of individual coaching in examination subjects for senior students. Students are also provided with specialist resources such as braille transcription, large print material, taped material, tactile material, low vision aids and specialised computer equipment. The Resource Room also provides the students with an individual work space and storage for their equipment.

The Resource Room staff liaise closely with the teachers of Manurewa High School, in order to anticipate the needs of the students. Over the years this has established a strong partnership between the High School and Homai College.

THE VISIT OF 3PL TO THE HOMAI RESOURCE ROOM The Homai Resource Room is a room for the blind and poorly sighted people in the school. The people who go there have to start school a week early so they get to know their way to their classrooms.

They have slot of special equipment in the resource room and have books all around the room. The photocopier is used for enlarging small print that they cannot read. And they have calculators that talk to the people when they push the button.

They have a white cane which is an international symbol that the person is blind. They now have foldup canes which are more practical and are longer than the normal ones.

We tried on different types of glasses which gave us the different types of vision the poorly sighted have.

They make maps by building up different materials used to represent landscapes e.g. tinfoil, cardboard, split peas.

Then they take it and put plastic over the top of it and heat the plastic which leaves an impression of the map.

On Friday we went to the place whet the Homai children work.

One of the ladies told us what it w like to be blind and she showed us sorts of canes, like the foldable on and how canes came about.

Then the lady gave us blindfolds an partner lead us around the school. S showed us how to lead a blind pers so they wouldn't bump into thing The good thing was we could take blind fold off after we had finished, After that we went into a differe room and a lady showed us braille how it worked and how it was made.

She showed us maps and pictures ma for the blind - that were raised so th could feel it with their finger tips.

She told us what Homai College for - part of it is a kindergarten, part a school for the blind but most of all is to learn about blindness.

From going to these classes it show me how lucky I am to have sight a how blind people cope with life showed me a little history and al about braille. It showed us to respe all blind people.

THE 1991 PREFECTS The 1991 Manurewa High School Prefects have been a great team with lots of hard work and dedication given to their job.

PREFECTS THE PREFECTS LEADERSHIP TRIP GO NORTH Early on Sunday morning March 2nd, the "new" prefects arrived at MHS with their gear, packed themselves into the three vans with their drivers-cumteam leaders, Mr Thomson, Mrs bixon and Miss Moore, and headed north for a four day experience.

We all say a "special thanks" to Mr Thomson and Mrs Dixon for always being there, for their support and encouragement and for helping us to make 1991 an enjoyable and rewarding year at Manurewa High School.

From March 2 until March 5 twenl eight Manurewa High School prefer and three teachers moved out of ti classroom to the outdoor peace and su of the Bay of Islands. The purpose ( the trip was to give the newt appointed prefects an opportunity to get to know one another and bond as strong friendly unit. As well, th teachers, Mr Thomson, Principal, Mr Dixon, Associate Principal, and Mis Moore, Guidance Coordinator, ra Leadership Seminars aimed a developing self confidence an leadership skills.

In between these conferences the group were able to visit some of th interesting sights of Northland. The: stopped at Marsden Point and thi Northland Regional Museum, took th launch trip to the Hole in the Rock atu went to Waitangi and Kerikeri.

LONG BAY DAY TRIP On Friday at the end of the term we went to Long Bay. I went in Mrs Donaldson's car. we went to the Marine Educatio9n training Centre.

We went along the motorway. When we got there we met the man then we went inside because it startedto rain. It rained for a while then it finally stopped and we could go out and do our activities. First we had rafting.

We put on our wetsuits and pushed the inflatable raft into the water. I kept getting splashed by the water because the kids were shaking the raft. When we had finished we had morning tea.

Rawiri was being greedy and taking a handful of biscuits and putting them in his pocket and so was Ernie. We had milo, tea or coffee, then we had currant buns. Then I went up to the girls' room. They were playing the guitar.

Then we played dragon tails. Nobody pulled mine off, though I pulled someone else's.

I forgot to mentionin this story that when I got ut of the raft it started to rain again. I ran back and got changed, and then we had lunch. We had baked beans and soup, muesli bars and an apple and oranges, and some chocolate log. We then played rope games and it was nearly hometime. Mrs Donaldson drove Ernie and me back home and dropped us off at our houses.

On a big log lying on the grog you have to play fight and the one t gets knocked off is the loser.

It was a very neat day.

When we got there we had to wait the steps for the man. He is t director of M.E.R.C. It was a et rainy day.

We played good games like Stuck the Mud, Dragons' Tails and Cas Knights.

After the inflatable raft we had a ride the speed boat. That was cool. jumped off the boat, into the water a swamin our wetsuits. The whole class enjoyed t trip to Long Bay.

STUDENTS INTERNATIONAL AFS is Love, AFS is brotherhood, we are here for just one year, to make our message clear.

Thus states the decades old AFS song.

Manurewa High School and its students had the honour of hosting twenty intriguing personalities from all over the world who came to experience the good of Kiwi life style.

We had a wide variety of nationalities with us, such as Otavio (Brazil), Hivoto (Japan), Luc and Jodi (Canada), Lauva (Finland) and a trail of Italians just to mention a few, for the week beginning August 15. Many a heart fluttered at the sight of our guests.

On Monday was the bus trip around Manukau. With bodies sprawled everywhere on the crowded bus it was easy to imagine being in any country in the world, a hundred and one different languages were spoken as we made our way to Clevedon and Montgomery Farm.

The agenda for the day was horse riding, sheep show, Clevedon Woolbarn for lunch, and the New Zealand Expo Centre. Somewhere between horse riding and the sheep show Mrs NgWaishing decided to be a farmgirl for the day and offered kindly to take us for a ride on the hay trailer which was towed by a tractor.

The next memorable event of the international week was the delicious pot-luck dinner on Wednesday night.

Everyone brought a dish for the communal feast, with the students bringing authentic delicacies from their various homelands.

About sixty of us, teachers, students, parents, sat in the school hall as we were blessed with a Powhiri by the school Maori group. We were honoured and thrilled by the professionally performed full Maori welcome as the exchange students sat in awe. It was an inspiring event.

During the welcome gifts were exchanged and then it was off to the pavillion for dinner, with guests Mr Thomson, Miss Moore, and other celebrities from the school. To say the food was great would be an understatement, but you had to get the food first!

I'd like to take this chance to thank

Mesdames Lal, NgWaishing and Sumer who did so much work that night and never got a chance to socialise, eat or even leave the kitchen.

There was a fascinating Moon Dance by several members of the school Asian Club. Whan put everyone on the spot by making us join in. Our own exchange student, Jip, did a Thai dance in full costume and the Italians did a rendition of their national anthem. It turned out to be a memorable and pleasant night for all.

Unfortunately on Thursday afternoon we had to say 'goodbye', `chiao', 'au revoir' or just plain 'see you' to our newly made friends. Over the week we had grown to know each other and ourselves more. There were educational but fun activities organised, and many students socialised together out of school, so it seemed as if everyone had grown up together.

We still have Jip and Gunnell who add a bit of spice to our school and many promises were made for everyone to stay in touch.

On behalf of all the students , overseas and normal, I'd like to thank all the teachers, students, hosts and their families, the AFS Club, Asian Club, Mr Thomson and everyone else who put in a helping hand for a wonderful week.

EIGHT WEEKS FREE IN JAPAN! Imagine talking with a person from Bangladesh at breakfast - an Egyptian at lunch-time and a Hungarian at dinner - and, what's more- talking with those of other nationalities the next day.

This is possible if one speaks in Japanese. That was my experience earlier this year when I was awarded the Japan Foundation Study Grant to spend two months -all expenses paid studying Japanese teaching methods.

From all over the world, teachers of Japanese language, librarians, soc those training for ambassadorial dutiei gathered to live and study at the Japan Foundation International Centre in Urawa near Tokyo.

Although we worked very hard -eve having daily kanji and language tests included in the "package" was a on week tour of Japan staying in ver expensive hotels and Japanese Inns rather different from my usual style o travel in Japan.

One scary aspect was being in Japa for the entire time of the Gulf War The world was buzzing and we wet busy studying seemingly detache from the whole horrible thing.

I did however, also learn somethin extra valuable - there's not muc wrong with the New Zealand style o teaching foreign languages.

JAPAN Lbra EXCHANGE

ASIAN CLUB this year the club was involved in a series of wide ranging activities. The activities involved staff, parents and Students International. The students worked extremely hard on the activities throughout the year and should be congratulated for their efforts.

- Chinese New Year February This was celebrated in style with a pot luck lunch put on by the students. To share the New Year the students invited a number of staff.

August - Taiwanese Week The library was taken over for the week and a number of displays and events took place; displays such as books, a mural and name translations. The week ended with visitors from the Hwa Hsai Society, Far East Trading, parents and staff being entertained by some students giving seminars and a demonstration of traditional Taiwanese dancing.

Other highlights have been the club joining up with Students International and helping them with preparations for International Week at school.

The club has been running for two years now and it seems to be going from strength to strength. Many thanks must go to the Education Officer of the Hwa Hsai Society as the financial help has allowed us to complete many of the events that occured during the year. With some funds left over and the profits made from the Chinese Valentine's Day sales, 1992 should be both exciting and rewarding.

A. NgWaishing (Teacher in Charge)

Do you like Limbo dancing, Rainbow's End and ice cream? Well these are just some of the things the Japanese host students experienced with their Japanese friends. This year Manurewa High School organised a sister school relationalship with Takasaki High School in Japan.

In August, twelve students and three teachers arrived at Auckland airport brandishing their cameras, and video camera, while wheeling their suitcases behind them. There were wide smiles and excited greetings which were the beginning of friendships between students and teachers of two culturally different schools.

During their visit the students and teachers were officially welcomed by our school Maori Culture group, gorged themselves on ice cream, and sat on the sheep at Expo, along with many other exciting activities.

During their stay the group visited Rainbow's End to see some Kiwi entertainment. That was an event in itself. What with the teacher running around videoing everyone and the cameras flashing in our eyes, we were blinded, or sick from going on the roller coaster too many times. All in all it was a great day. One thing that stays in our minds is how the Japanese have the ability to spend one hour or more in a small souvenir shop, and only end up buying a few items.

Not only was their visit fun, but we learnt alot about the Japanese culture, and the Japanese learnt about the Kiwi way of life. They were amazed at how green our landscape is, how blue the sky is, and how many stars there are at night.

At the end of the year, eleven student: and teachers from Manurewa High wil be travelling to Takasaki where the' will meet with their Japanese friends t+ experience the Japanese way of lif through living with a family. Th group will also travel throughout th country by shinkansen (the bulk train) for one week... fast.

ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL

CULTURAL COUNCIL

What motive would a group of senior students have for staying behind after everyone else had gone home to cut trees one week, and put more in the next? Was it because they liked to get their hands muddy, because they had great commitment to the physical standards of our school's environment, or simply the afternoon tea of chocolate biscuits, cake and drink which followed the half hour of work? I'll leave the answer up to you. But for whatever reason it worked.

Our first project involved ticket sales and Front of House duties for the musical "Oklahoma". Members from forms 5 to 7 assisted prefects in July with the careers evening resource people and guests.

"I Remember Mama" in August was the major drama production with Front of House duties again carried out by the council.

The PTA invited senior members to help with ticket sales for the Fashion Parade. On other occasions members have acted as ushers for functions.

Thanks to the long serving students who have contributed to the Council and to the teachers who have given support - Mesdames Taylor, McLaughlan, Pinkney, Lallier, NgWaishing and Lal.

Throughout the year a number of working bees were held, each concentrating on a different area of the school. In the second term we were honoured to have Mrs Coles plant the memorial tree for Mr Coles in recognition of all he did within MHS especially his contribution to the Environmenal Council. Another important event was Arbour day when each third form planted a tree in the school grounds.

The Environmental Council is an enjoyable and fun way to become involved in the school, (the memories of hail fights keep coming back).

Much thanks must go to Mr Hodgson for his commitment and organisation in all the working bees.

In one case, the Urgent Actii group wrote an aerogramme letter a sent a telegram to protest against t murder of a civil rights leader.

Congratulations to those people w made the commitment. Nerissa Stypriaan acted as chairperson.

THE LIBRARY 1991 A lot has happened. Never has the library been so busy. Book borrowing is higher than in the past. It has been very popular with students.

The library team has appreciated the capable help of Mrs Jocelyn Anderson, and Mrs Kitson has been a regular volunteer. An active team of pupil librarians, including several seniors, have made a big contribution, creating a lively social atmosphere. Andrew Cunningham was the head librarian.

This year's big project has been the automation of the library. It has kept the Librarians' heads down ; some of the things they would normally have done have had to take second place, but thanks to the tremendous effort of Mrs Shaw, Mrs Price and Mrs Miers the computerised Library will be up and running next year. Library users in 1992 will have their own bar-coded student cards. They will be able to find books or articles more easily by using the enquiry monitors.

Borrowing, returns and renewal, and reserves will be by laser pen.

The Library has been used for a variety of displays and exhibitions, speeches and debates. Anything displayed in the library is seen by a good number of people. Art work, geography, English, Maths and especially Science exhibits have been on show. One exciting display, in July-August, was put on by the Taiwanese and other Asian students.

It involved alot of preparation.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT 1991 was a highly successful year for the Music Department, with items ranging from Oklahoma, our musical school production, casting over a hundred pupils under the wonderful direction of Mrs Brown, and the highly acclaimed musicianship of Mrs Waardenburg, Mr Brown and Mr Martyn, to items at Careers and Orientation Evenings. All of course performed by highly talented people.

Our wonderful school orchestra, practices for which pupils attended enthusiastically and worked hard at, performed successfully at the Anzac Service.

The orchestra also performed items at various junior and senior assemblies.

Music taught during classes this year was enjoyed by all students.

Keyboards provided learning techniques in theory and the melodies for Form Five's wonderful compositions.

Extracurricular lessons in violin, singing, guitar, brass and percussion were provided for those wishing to advance their music knowledge and talents.

Spencer Silby a fith former at Manurewa High School sang the part of Will in the production of Oklahoma.

Spencer is no newcomer to the stage.

He has been a member of Lou (A Clauson's Young Talent Discovery Team since 1987. He has toured most of the North Island and parts of Australia during this time, working in Malls, Easter Shows, New Zealand Expo and stage shows. He likes most kinds of music, from modern to classical.

His mother has been a big influence on his music. With his brother and sister he has sung in many country awards throughout New Zealand. Spencer won the 1988 male section in Tauranga and the 1990 male section in Auckland.

He won the Clendon Town Centre Talent quest and as part of the Silby Trio won overall in the Intermediate Auckland Regional awards.

He has had parts in several school productions and enjoyed the more challenging role of Will in Oklahoma.

Practise was dreaded by all because it always meant work. Our lovely kaumatua and kui provided the Maori Club with MATUKUTUREIA MARAE for several liveins, practises and dress rehearsals. (Kiaora koutou katoa).

Several other performances included welcoming Japanese students within the school, citizen powhiri, lunchtime entertainment at Aotea Centre, opening the Papakura School whir Tanginana and many more enjoyable gatherings.

Fundraising was important too. A, major fundraiser was a mini festival to help the club travel to Te Aute Kareo to open their school whare. This wal to have happened during Labour weekend but because governance funding has been axed, this is now nol possible. We wanted to help ou whanaunga so a large donation will made to support them in their work.

MHS MAORI CLUB 1991 `TE AHIKAROA' 1991 Kia ora! 1991 had finally arrived for Te Ahikaroa, with loads of work, this wasn't going to be fun, but with the love and support of our parents and caring tutors, Maehe and Ethal Nikora, it would just be another breeze in the wind.

(Ko tenei taku mihi ki a korua tena korua wio to mahi ataahua ki tenei roopu). Both tutors made us rise to the highest peak in Maoritanga and taught us to always try our best.

We were privileged to take part in many performances and festivals throughout the year. One of these was the Auckland Secondary Schools Maori and Pacific Islands Festival.

Here we were honoured to achieve second place for the moteatea section and overwhelmed to be placed sixth overall.

Fergerson Primary School, where we were to stay in two classrooms. This was where we set up camp and made our home for the next two days. Time has never gone so slowly, with all the warm feelings, TE AHIKAROA could not wait to descend on to the marae area of MAHINARANGI, to entertain the crowd that gathered to peer at lam in the morning. No words could express the feeling that was fluttering about. Once we were outside in front of the wharenui wairua, aroha and tears flowed from every student that preformed. Being the Queen's anniversary this was not a competitive event, but only for pleasure and the honour of having participated in this grand occasion. To be able to perform to such a knowledgeable people will be an experience we will never forget. We will never forget Ngaruawahia, which we now consider our second home.

With all this behind us we practised even harder to meet a very prestigious event. 1991 was the 25th anniversary of TE ARIKINUI TE ATAIRANGIKAHU. Manurewa High School Maori Club was proud to hear we were to pay tribute to this lovely lady and the kaupapa.

TE Ain KA ROA AT THE AOTEA CENTRE The Manurewa High School Maori Culture Group, Te Ahi Ka Roa, performed for the public at Aotea Centre on July 4 . They were there at the invitation of the Aotea Centre as part of the lunch time concerts offered to the public in the foyer of the Aotea Centre.

The group performed for an hour. A Maori Welcome was given and a member of the audience was asked to accept the challenge to show that they came in peace. This year has been very enjoyable for many who have participated. In the second week of the August holidays the Maori Women's Welfare League (Te Roopu Wahine Toko I Te Ora) sponsored a gathering for all junior leagues that had been established within high schools throughout Auckland. MUNA MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY ATTENDED MAY 10-12

by Bree Taylor and Christine Meredith We were told that we were to represent Thailand, and dubiously we made our way to Takapuna to the College where MUNA would be held.

There were schools from as far away as Whangarei and Tuakau, and their representation made up 157 member states as well as observer states viz; Vatican City and the PLO. Over the weekend, several issues were debated including human rights, nuclear test banning, sanctions, immigration policies, the use of the Antarctic, and a firey snap debate on the use of the veto by the five 'great' powers.

Had MUNA been real and not a simulation, there would be reduced expenditure on arms, less terrorism, no right-of-veto at the UN, and no nuclear testing at all.

The exercise was extremely exciting and worthwhile, and Christine and I have been given a lasting impression of goodwill between schools and countries. We both made friends and will probably never experience such incredible comradeship with fellow students again.

ZIG ZIGLER MOTIVATION Friday, 19 July, 12.00pm. Forty tired and disinterested Manurewa High School students boarded a bus to go and see Zig Zigler speak for four hours on motivation _ the last thing that we wanted to hear about at the end of a hectic week.

students returned to school after singing, playing and chattering loudly on the bus trip home.

We didn't know much about Zig Z' before that Friday. We knew we co have an afternoon off school if we w to see him, and that we may possib learn something about motivation.

By the time the four hour talk w over, we knew that stop-lights we actually go-lights, that the end of a Is of bread was really the start, and that we must be okay because 'God dolt make no junk.'

It is impossible to explain what exactly happened to us that afternoon. But as the huge auditorium of the Logan Campbell Centre emptied its one thousand patrons at around 5.00pm, it

seemed that the world was a better place, and that we were so lucky to be alive. We sensed that the crowd of mainly real-estate agents and sales representatives felt the same way; I had never seen so many credit cards being whipped out to buy $900 cassette packages on motivation, I had never seen so many cellular phone aerials pop out of a crowd , as deals were made with an all-new zeal.

Whatever Mr Zigler did to us that afternoon, I would eagerly recommend that others seek the same experience.

The seminar was suitable for all kinds of people in any sort of career.

JORDIE THE KID He rode slowly through the deserted streets, flanked on either side by the brown dust covered buildings with brown dust covered,verandas on brown, dust covered roads. Tumbleweed drifted across his path. One minute slow and graceful, the next , hurried with erratic movements caused by the same wind that picked up the dust and dead leaves from the ground, spun, turned and twisted them for a moment, then dropped them again to leave them laying lifelessly once more. Another gust of wind tore down the street from the hills, picked up another handful of dust and flung it against his face making it hard for him to breathe.

Suddenly he caught a glimse of someone's shadow moving behind a fence a few feet to his left. Deftly he drew his colt .45, and taking a careless but accurate aim, let off three rapid shots towards the stealthy shadow behind the dusty and faded wooden boards.

"Hey, watch it Jordie. Shootin' that dumb water gun at me."

A small chubby boy of around twelve walked around from behind a hedge with a snarl growing upon his lips.

"Wotcha doin'?" he repeated.

Arnold was a short, fat kid with a freckled face who hated wearing his glasses and thought he was good at sports and thought he had lots of friends. The truth was he was greatly disliked at Jordies' school, but not as much as Jordie. The kids thought that Jordie was strange because he kept to himself and was always reading.

Someone like Arnold was disliked because he was a no-hoper, a loser, an unco-ordinated boy with no friends.

But Jordie, Jordie was strange, a weirdo. No matter what, stay away from the weirdo. That's the way it always was, and that's the way it always would be.

"Just thinking," Jordie replied cautiously, not wanting any trouble.

"You're always thinking, reading or riding that dumb bike!"

Jordie looked at him swiftly, then he climbed down from his supermax and flicked the dirt off the seat with caring fingers.

"That dumb bike, that dumb bike " he thought to himself. With the red frame and blue tyres, a slightly buckled front wheel and rusting handlebars. That dumb bike was his faithful stallion,

relentlessly carrying him across the untamed west. His bright red ferrari with bulletproof tyres, a super turbocharged engine that he used to chase international spies from around the world. It was his spaceship fight craft, his dirt motorbike and his spitfire. It was all he had to call his own.

"That dumb bike..." said Arnold smuggly, knowing full well he was getting to him.

"It's not dumb. It's ..."

"It's what?" shouted Arnold, feeling powerful. "...it's mine," replied Jordie weakly.

"Ha! You're weird Jordie."

Jordie looked away feeling the tears swelling up as he heard the truth once again.

"Hey!" said Arnold, recognising full well the way Jordie must be feeling.

"Wanna come play bullrush with us at the park?"

"I might come later."

"Yeah...sure," replied Arnold quietly, still feeling traces of guilt.

"Well try to come later. It will be fun."

"Yeah...sure," Jordie said bitterly, the tears pushing past his eyes as he rode away.

"Ahh, who cares about him anyway," Arnold thought to himself. "Maybe when I tell the guys what I said to him they'll think I'm cool," he thought, justifying his actions. Jordie waited until Arnold was a fair way down the road before he started to follow, dodging asteroids and meteors on the way. He got to the park in time to see all the guys gathered around Arnold.

All of a sudden they started laughing and then continued with their game.

"I wonder if I should go and play," Jordie thought reverently. "Nah, they still wont like me. I'll go home. It's safe there."

He crossed the road and made his way home, walking his bike beside him. He kicked an empty packet of chips that drifted past him, carried by the same wind that picked up the dirt and leaves, spun, turned and twisted them for a moment, then dropped them again to leave them lying lifelessly once more.

3DS TRIP TO MT RUAPEHU Day One After a somewhat shaky start (a car accident 10 metres in front of us) we had a quick trip through Matamata to Wairakei. We stopped briefly for a walk by the geothermal power station before moving up to Huka Falls for lunch.

After a walk along the river viewing track we travelled into Taupo where we visited Cherry Island. This is a wildflife park where the children were able to feed the birds, rabbits, trout and many other animals. The birds were particularly tame and most of the children had several birds land on them, all competing for the food they carried in their pockets.

From here we travelled directly to Turangi to the Tongiriro Accomodation Centre. The children shared cabins that were well set up and clean - a real bonus when you take into account the $9 a night charge. With skiing planned for the next day an early night was required.

Day Two The first early risers were up at 5am.

The rest were woken at 6am. The weather forecast was not good. It was still snowing at the mountain and visibility was only 20 metres.

Despite this we felt that too much effort had gone into planning for the trip and it was worth the risk to go to the ski slope. We first stopped at the information centre for a weather update. We were relieved to find the road was now open and that the learners' slopes were able to be used.

Getting all the ski gear together was quite an exercise as by now there were hundreds of groups arriving.

The rest of the day was spent on the slope learning how to fall over, ski, fall over, use the tow rope and fall over.

By the end of the day all of the students were confident skiers.

At 3pm we left the slopes and drove back to the information centre where we were given an excellent slide show on the volcanic origins of the area.

Back at Turangi we prepared for dinner in the restaurant. Dinner was a festive affair with three birthdays being celebrated as well as a thank you to the staff and parents.

That night we retired to the lounge and

had a pleasant hour in front of the fire.

Day Three We left Turangi at about 9am and travelled to Huka Village. Here the children used the flying fox, obstacle course and explored the colonial buildings, shops and animal cages.

We next drove to the AC baths in Taupo for a hot pool swim and lunch.

Time always seemed to pass quickly and soon we were on our way back home.

The pupils all behaved themselves very well and were a credit to their school.

Many thanks to our helpers, Mrs Wright, Mrs Welch and Mr Baillie.

1ST XI BOYS HOCKEY This year we fielded one mixed team of juniors and senior players in the B grade Counties school competition.

After starting the season with just 11 players it was encouraging to play our last few games with 4 or 5 reserves.

The team started the year with a rocky first game which saw us lose 6-2 to Waiuku, with just over half a team.

After this game the team improved greatly and the two other times the team played Waiuku we won by three goals every time. Our best game of the season was when we beat Wesley 15-1.

In this game Sanjay Soma scored an incredible 12 times. Sanjay, our token seventh former, lead the team to first place in the competition and his wisdom and skill will be immensely missed next year.

GIRLS FIRST XI HOCKEY TEAM At the beginning of the season we had accumulated five players, two sticks, half a hockey ball, one uniform and 1.5 spectators.

But upon the arrival of "Mother Tait" our expectations were lifted. We managed to field a whole team.... uniforms and all.

-Mr Turner's lifelong dream of bowling just like Barney Rubble -And last but not least, Mother Tait, hockey coach extraordinaire and disciplinary dragon at the breakfast table..."frankly you two, I've had enough!"

But seriously, thanks to Mrs Tait, Mr Turner and our supporters, Fred our mascot and Stan...our main man!

With much "mild" encouragement from our captain, Louise, we managed wins of 16-0, 9-0, 6-0 and 9-1 which led us to win our grade.

At the end of the season we travelled beyond the Bombays to Rotorua, where we began our tour. It was very successful in more ways than one....

-Melissa's skillful manouvering off the luge, off the track, on the "big dipper" -Sunita's smuggling of two dozen lamingtons out of the restaurant, under her jacket -Justine's "jaffa sensitive nostrils", and her attempts at gaining discounts for everything, including the free breakfast.

-The two Karens, one who felt the need to study and the other who just "felt silly" -Jodene's professional attempt at peeling potatoes, leaving one fifth for eating and the rest for the bin â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Sarah and Tania's constant "Hori" impressions and all night antics

The team's ball handling and passing skills improved during the year under the excellent coaching of Mr D Bargh and Mr Jeanes, a visiting teacher from England. In particular Marc Dixon, Roshan Patel, Parish Daji, Ryan Wells and Matthew Metcalfe showed consistent development. Malcolm Frith covered the field brilliantly during the year and in our first game against Waiuku just about played to exhaustion.

DEBATING SENIOR DEBATING TEAM

DEBATING Senior advanced debating had a successful and exciting 1991 season.

We entered two teams in the ADA Competition. There were not fixed members, so moving to desired moots and positions was an advantage for all members.

The fifth form debating team wa . completely inexperienced in debatio at the beginning of the year, and thi showed in their first debate agains Howick College in term one; the moo was "To have peace we must prepare for war".

Among our moots were such obscurities as "It is better to rule in Hell than to serve in Heaven" and "That we are slaves to convention", along with more straightforward moots like "That New Zealand should have a local TV quota".

My team had victories over St Kentigens 1, McLeans 1 and Howick 1. We lost to McLeans 2.

The speakers between the two teams were: Bree Taylor Alice O'Brien Dirk Cotter Nigel Rimmer Iswari Jayanandan Kyra Robertson Louise Ryan and Richard Boyes who kindly stepped in at short notice for an early Jaycees debate.

Many members were first time debaters and improved considerably over the season.

Debating is a stimulating and educational sport which is often the foundation for public speaking careers and always the means to confidence and self-esteem. Many thanks to Mrs R Chan and Mrs H Kilgour for their assistance, support and encouragement.

Bree Taylor: Best equal speaker Advanced, South Eastern region ADA Secondary Schools Debating competition.

But after the shock of their defeat, the) took up the challenge of debating it earnest and never looked back, winning all three debates in the third term, against St Kentigern's, Papakura and MacLean's. The moots: That now ' the time to reforge sporting links wi South Africa (affirmative); That o society is reflected in mirror gl (negative); That feminism h destroyed femininity (The team in du debate , Keri, Lucy and Michell convincingly demonstrated that the' feminist mystique had been dealt death blow).

Each time they debated the team looked stronger. Their special strengths were excellent speaking ability - both in prepared speaking and rebuttal, careful preparation and teamwork.

The team , who participated research, planning and support as well as debating, were Lucy Barr, Lee Cook, Justine Hirama, Ingrid Johansen, Keri Kimpton, Kieran McDonagh, Veronica Pearce and Michelle Thompson. The advice given

by Catherine Hellyer and Deanne Cornthwaite before the third debate is gratefully acknowledged.

GEOGRAPHY Geographers Picnic 1991

It was with a great deal of anticipation that 40 assorted students and staff {it was hard tell who was who in mufti)departed for the darkest depths of Waharau. This camp had a reputation - many a tale had been whispered about the five star cuisine, the gruelling tramp, the monstrous eels lurking the shad owed pools and the punishing work regime. Why are we doing this? came the anguished mental shout as the bus creaked out of the driveway.

Not even liquid sunshine could daunt the intrepid geographers as they struggled to fathom the intricacies of the drainage basin profiles. Near vertical slops, slippery boulders and "Amazon" type rivers were tackled and conquered. Mrs "mum" Herring tempted even the fussiest of palates with her culinary delights.

Mr VK spurred on the touch team to even greater heights while Mr Perry ensured not a single oppposum entered camp during the night (a new sonic barrier) Mrs Briggs smilingly "encouraged" student work from dawn to dusk. Whoopee!

No student casualties this year other than overeating and lack of sleep.

Three days later an exhausted group fell in the front gate. Everything they said was true - and more. Blistered feet tottered down the drive way and home to blissful oblivion in a comfortable bed. Never had so many worked so hard to achieve so much.

M.H.S. I.S.C.F. (Inter-School Christian Fellowship) It took a long time for me even to se foot in AS on a Friday lunchtime. had an image of a group of long-faces undesirables in a small cluster in th centre of the room. Instead, I wa welcomed by an energetic and liver bunch led by Mr Voisey. While dal group were singing I could see peoph from various churches who had corm together for the same purpose.

It didn't take long before we smile( arrangements for the Easter Assembly Although practices were limited an time was short, the assembly went welt As usual, we began with a group son then we did some Bible readings. Th our Head Girl, Susan Fuimaon shared how she became a Christia and we concluded with The Champio a musical drama about Christ's dea and resurrection.

Joining Mr Voisey in leading a few our meetings were an American, Youth Pastor from Australia, a pas pupil, many present pupils, teache and a Board of Trustees member.

Term III began with the Open Ai Campaigners Team coming in an taking a "mission" week within th school. Each lunchtime they ha meetings in the hall. The first feature an ex-pupil, Mark Laurent, and hi wife, who have become widely knos as Christian musicians. Other meetin involved discussions on such topics a suicide, sex and dating.

During this week the Christia Fellowship Group took an assembly.

We took another musical drama, Revival in the Land, a rap, a Samoan choir sang, and a small skit which challenged the school to taste and se that the Lord is good. On the Friday lunchtime there was a meeting outside the gymnasium. It was a fine day, so many sat around and listened to t music and the message.

In a way I wish I had joined Christian Fellowship before, but this year has been the best for all the group. Thanks to Mr Voisey who has made it allJ possible.

NETBALL 1991 The season started off with numerous trials, the outcome of which were seven teams - the Senior Open, Senior A, Senior B, 4A, 4B, 3A, and 3B. The teams participated in the weekly Manukau Secondary Schools Competition held at the Browns Road courts every Wednesday. At the courts the teams played with enthusiasm and team spirit. During the season all teams experienced wins loses and draws.

Throughout the winter the girls were able to compete in a number of tournaments and /or exchanges; early in the season, the North Shore tournament, midway the ASB tournament, then towards the end ,the CocaCola tournament. Although the teams that participated had little success, the girls benefited greatly from the experience.

All teams . were able to take part in the Papatoetoe and Massey exchanges held during the second term.

We wish to thank the coaches and managers who supported the teams, because without their valuable help, the netball season would never happen.

CRICKET REPORT 1ST XI BOYS This year the Boys 1st XI Cricket had a fairly good season. Despite being unable to chase a target, the team was very successful at defending their The team had trouble score. capitalising on good starts and fell away during the middle order. The team had a good team spirit and hopes to have a more successful coming season.

Throughout the season Andrew Crenfelt and Brett le Quesne provided a good start with consistent bowling which was backed up with some positive batting by Glen Hill, Sanjay Soma, Andrew Crenfeldt, Glen Turner and Dale Mooney. Other major contributions came from players such as Norman Amani, Donny Tahir, Shane Cook and Andrew Booth which made the team a very efficient welloiled unit. The wicket keeping skills of Andrew Dickinson were much appreciated by the team, especially the bowlers.

The team would like to thank Mr Hollis for giving up his time and coming to umpire for us every week.

CYCLING NORTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS CYCLING CHAMPS TE AWAMUTU SATURDAY MAY 25 Two teams raced the 16km circuit from Te Awamutu out towards Pirongia and back.

The boy's team consisted of: Brett Olsen Andrew Smith Jason Boulter Micheal Van Dam The boys were placed fourth, missing out on third place by less than two seconds.

The girl's team consisted of: Kelly Boulter Cathy Olsen Jacqui Anderson Teri Hansford The girls were placed fourth.

Both teams were up against very strong competition from schools throughout the North Island and rode well to gain these places.

NEW HIGH JUMP RECORD SET Brent Petrie of the seventh form, broke a twenty-five year old record at the Manukau Interschool Athletics meeting in March this year. Brent cleared 1.91 meters breaking the previous record of 1.88 meters set by Perry Cunningham in 1966.

Brent has previously reached international standard in trampolining, gaining seventh place in the 15 to 17 age group for the double mini tramp at the world champions in Germany last year.

"I feel I hit my peak in trampolining last year. I want now to concentrate on athletics and the triathlon," he said.

Brent's performance earned him a place in the North Island Intersecondary meet, but he was unable to compete because of work commitments. He is looking forward to competing in the Interschool Nationals held in Dunedin at the end of the year.

DUATHLON CHAMPS Manurewa High School students did exceptionally well at the Sorelli Secondary Schools Duathlon Championships held at Alfriston School on June 6.

Schools from the whole Auckland area competed. Mr Ian Craig, the duathlon coach, was delighted with the preformance of his charges.

Manurewa High School teams came first in the Senior Boys, Senior Girls and Junior Boys sections, and second in the Junior Girls section.

1ST XI SOCCER TOURNAMEN

FIRST ELEVEN SOCCER

The learning experience in the tournament of 1990 was invaluable.

This year they were ready and prepared to take Manurewa to the top.

To take part in the National Tournament hosted at Takapuna Grammar we had to participate in a sudden death competition. After beating Dilworth 3-0 and Whangarei Boys 3-1 the final and deciding game was against Mt Roskill Grammar. The showdown was set at Mt Smart Stadium, sponsored by Joint Cabinetmakers, with thanks to Alan Clay.

Although narrowly losing 2-1 in extra time the attitude and commitment shown was of the highest standard.

This meant we could compete in the tournament at Wanganui Collegiate.

Monday started the group play. Game one was against the number one seeds, highly regarded Waitakere College.

Rewa as a team had a strong defensive effort and managed a nil all draw. Two hours later we were to play Wanganui High which we won 3-2. The foundation was set to go all the way.

The second day saw a tacticle change and a fired up Rewa convincingly beat and outplayed Rosmini College. The strikers finished in style and Tani Amosa's 45m goal sealed the 4-0 victory. The afternoon saw a South Auckland derby with Manurewa and Pukekohe playing a competitive game.

Pukekohe fought to the end as they always do but Rewa showed their dominance winning 3-0.

This year, coached expertly by Mr Lane, we won the Manukau Championship undefeated. This is only the second time a team has managed to win two tyears in a row.

(James Cook did it in 1979-80). The team also competed in the two sports exchanges with Papatoetoe and Massey highs. Both games were won, 2-1against Papatoetoe, and 7-1 against Massey. Goalkeeper Philip Paterson scoring a sensational goal and Glen Hill, who hadn't scored for four years, scoring against Massey.

Regardless of which eleven players took the field, those players were always sure to give one hundred percent. Although a team without stars, special mention must go to Glen Hill (vice captain) who on and off the field kept everyone's spirits high, Andrew Crenfeldt who broke his ankle (playing for the 2nd XI) preseason, but amazingly came back to play a few league games and have a superb tournament, and Scott Anderson, whose youth was hardly noticed on the field. Scott showed he will be an asset in future years for Manurewa High.

Special thanks go to Mr Lane for taking the time to coach us, Mr Cook who helped all the way through the season and during the tournament, Mr Pate'rson for his time and effort, and Mr Thomson, Mrs Dixon, Mr Hornblow and Mrs Shortland who were often seen at our matches supporting us.

Wednesday was the last day of gn play. Required to finish inn the f two in their group to reach the set Manurewa was on top but could afford to lose a game as the group so close. We played Wanganui Boy: a tightly contested battle drawing 1-1, this was enough. Manurewa finished1 and history was in the making.

Thursday, the day of reckoning, we Is to play Wanganui Collegiate, one of top schools in New Zealand. This be the business end of the tournament, b teams gave one hundred percent. A draw meant extra time. Philip Paten showed his keeping skills by savin penalty, but we conceded a well tali goal. Wanganui were the evenn winners of the tournament ,defeati Waitakere in the final, 2-1. Manurew consistent effort gave them fourth plan pleasing result. Shane Allen made t tournament team. Players of t tournament were Michael Weetnik, GI Turner, Philip Paterson, Glen Hill a Andrew Crenfeldt, with a team efft from Brett LeQuesne (cpt), Bill Rent Shane Cook, Kyle Faeirs, Taniel: Amosa and Corey McInnes.

2nd XI SOCCER

For a team organised in one lunchtime we played remarkably well. Starting off as strictly social team mainly comprised of seventh formers, we became more serious as we realised we had a chance of winning the competition. And win we did!

Convincingly! After eleven games we were unbeaten, not conceding a single point.

After two close games at the beginning of the season, we thrashed a lacklustre Wesley outfit 12-0 and gained immense confidence. We became unstoppable from then on, wiping the mat with the rest of the competition and beating each team by an average of seven goals.

Our last match of the season was against St Stephens' 1st XI, who were at that stage lying second in the league.

They were a very different outfit from the team we met in the first round and a combination which had been unbeaten. It became very obvious why!

They were a very physical side with little regard for such things as rules and we had to play well and withstand blatant fouls to win 4-1 and maintain our unbeaten record, winning the competition by six points.

The highlight of our season though, was our performance in the "friendly" against Papatoetoe H.S. We were

thrown off a bit by the presence of a current Under 23 All White in the Papatoetoe side, and were down 0-1 at half time, a situation we were unfamiliar with. In the second half, however, we lifted our performance and played our best football of the season to end up victorious, 2-1. This was our lowest scoring, but most satisfying win.

After eleven games for eleven wins, we had scored 69 goals, and conceded only 10.

Thanks must go to the coach, Mr Cook, for his time and help. I'm sure he enjoyed coaching us as much as we enjoyed having him as coach. Also thanks to Chris Mills, Narith Bou and Richard Ewing for helping out when required.

The team's Golden Boot Award goes to Darryn Lochead, the Player's Player of the Year to Shane Cook and the Coach's Player of the Year to Bill Rennie. Gavin Cleal also deserves a special mention for his sterling efforts in both Captaining and organising the side.

1st XI GIRLS SOCCER REPORT - VK's VANDALS 1991.

Once again October comes upon us and the curtain has been drawn on an exciting and eventful season. The standard of girls soccer in South Auckland and the number of teams competing continues to improve each season. This year was no exception with all the schools in A grade fielding strong teams. After a slow start to the season the girls improved markedly and fmally finished in third place. Throughout the competition the team was capably led by captain Louise Turner and her deputies, Karla Van den Berg and Christine Meredith. In defence Toaila Pasi has developed into an excellent player and was well supported by Mary Mcleod, Sandra Weetink, Jenny Hellyer and Charleen Ellis.

Unfortunately both Mary and Sandra had their seasons cut short by injury.

Rosita Levi in goal was in superb touch all year. Who could forget the sight of Rose throwing herself across the goal mouth to punch the ball past the post.

The midfield was the strength of the team this year with an array of skilled, accomplished players including Natasha McGeady, Karla Van den Berg, Arianne Reeves, Stacey Fraser, Louise Turner (also played in defence), Isobel McGeady and Natalie Huggard.

The strikers for the competition season were Leanne Boxall and Christine Meredith, both of whom played with pace, flair and determination.

In our traditional school sports exchanges the girls played Papatoetoe (0 - 0 draw) and Massey (1 - 3 loss). In August the team was involved in the National Secondary Schools Tournament. A dozen teams from around the North Island had entered including two teams ranked in the top five in New Zealand. As fortune would gave it both of these teams were in our pool. The girls lost 1 - 0 to Pukekohe after a very dubious penalty decision and 3 - 1 to Hillcrest (Hamilton). The final result in pool play was a 1 - 1 draw with Wellington College. These

results placed the girls in the pla division of the tournament. They the proceeded to beat Avondale 1 - 0 at Wellington 1 - 0 to make the Pla final. The final was an exciting gar with Manurewa well on top througho and deserving a 2 - 0 win. This succe would not have been possible witho the new players recruited for tl tournament. Susan Fuimoano ar Tania Rankin were very strong defence while Alex Reekers w dynamic as a striker scoring 3 goal Leanne Boxall and Natasha McGeac were the other goal scorers. The tea were awarded the plate in the fin ceremony and our captain Loui Turner was selected for tl Tournament team. This was ju recognition for a skilled and popul player and leader. Throughout tl year the hallmarks of this team we loyalty, excellent team spirit and a hig standard of sportsmanship. It has bee my pleasure to have been associate with the team.

NEW IMAGE GIRLS RUGBY

The New Image Girls Rugby squad has enjoyed an active season this year with several games, two tournaments, and the opportunity to referee a primary school tournament.

The members of the team maintained a high level of enthusiasm throughout the season, and improved their game with consistent effort.

6TH GRADE RUGBY

RUGBY

Sometimes 6th Grade rugby does not get much support because it is the lightest weight of school rugby, but this year was an exception. With expert coaching from Mr Williams, the team was able to display good ball handling, mauling, set moves and back play skills in front of our very interested supporters.

Lead up front by such good players as Matthew Manu, Morgan McLean and Dean Wilkinson, the whole pack combined well. In the backs it was great to see a variety of moves and patterns blending in to make great tries. Especially notable were the fast wingers, in particular Clinton Scott who always seemed to have the pace to beat his man, or pass infield to combine well with his centre, David Watson. David was outstanding in his ability to make breaks and hard defensive tackles.

The 6th Grade managed to put together a reasonable total of 7 wins and 6 losses in 13 games against very tough competition.

THE 1ST XV RUGBY SUMMARY

FIFTH GRADE RUGBY The team enjoyed a good season ending third in the Counties Competition behind Rosehill College and Wesley College. Throughout the season we played teams who were heavier in the forwards but the strong leadership of Captain Stuart Macfarlane, James Allison and Shannon Thickpenny enabled us to compete well against all but the strongest teams. Our backs were great at creating chances for each other and moving the ball quickly.

Scott Penney at halfback was always quick and a great defender. The experience of Tony Arrol, Jason Sakaria and the speed of Paul Van der Berg created problems for all teams.

We developed an outstanding defence that broke down most opposition attacks.

The most enjoyable games were against St Stephens (won 13 - 8 and lost 12 4), Pukekohe High (won 16 - 4 and lost 9 - 8) and Tuakau College. The decision to give all twenty two team members a game each Saturday worked well and developed a strong team spirit and enjoyable practices.

Congratulations to Scott Penney for being chosen the outstanding Junior Rugby Player of 1991.

The A Team Coach - Mr Marr

The 1991 1st XV got off on a rocky start due to poor turnouts and lack of discipline.

While hoping to emulate the efforts of the team last year, this team wasn't as hungry for glory nor willing to put in the effort by training hard or having positive attitudes.

The team had hot and cold performances - losing 61-0 to St Stephens to gutsing it out for a full 80 minutes and winning a thrilling 6-4 game against Rosehill 1st XV. Although the players didn't always function as a team there were individuals who stood out and gained representative honours. They are: Counties Sec, Northern Regions David Dunn Counties U16 Cameron Wilton Counties U16 Thomas Vaetoru

SECOND XV 1991

THIRD GRADE RUGBY

1991 has been a rewarding and enjoyable season for the MHS 2nd XV. We have achieved a good level of success in the Counties competition and at the same time enjoyed our rugby and the friendships developed within the team. We have been able to maintain a large group of committed players and have had the privilege of a dedicated group of supporters who have offered their assistance and encouragement.

The 3rd Grade Rugby team had a very mixed season. Unfortunately the team did not play consistently good rugby every game and as a result often struggled against teams they should have beaten. However, the highlight of the season was the 36-0 win over Papatoetoe High School in the annual exchange. The team showed its true brilliance in both forward control and in its hard running and supportive backplay.

Many players had outstanding games but those to play consistently well are mentioned below.

Earnest Betham a strong determined frontrower who captained the team and always led by example.

The season began with a precompetition game against Tangaroa college 1st XV. We had trouble fielding fifteen players for this game but with a little help from the 1st XV managed to perform creditably for a 10-12 defeat. This game gave us a base to build on and we soon had up to twenty keen young men at practices.

Rodney Birch who had to miss the last half of the season with an injury was an outstanding kicker and ball winner in both the tight and loose play.

Robert Hill an effective and dynamic loose forward.

Mathew Barclay who played in many different positions, always played hard rugby despite carrying an injury.

Jonathon Goldsmith who dictated play from first five was able to run strongly and kick effectively.

Giovanni Militelli and Philip Thompson ran strongly and tackled effectively in the outside backs.

Daniel Ngatai who had strong games at either fullback or in the forwards.

The team would like to thank Mr Wilton and Mr Booth who helped Mr Hornblow coach and manage the team.

A special thanks to the parents who transported and supported the team on Saturdays over the winter.

We went through the first round of the Counties competition undefeated and suffered only two losses all season, one to a fired up Rosehill side and one to a heavily stacked St Stephens side that used about twenty reserves.

The highlight of the season was narrowly beating Wesley College on their home ground. We were down 810 with a minute to go when Trent Walker displayed some of his erratic brilliance to score a try. At this point the coach was seen in a dance of celebraton on the sideline. Then there was the morning the fence around the school carpark was covered in wet jerseys because the coach's dryer had broken down.

Every member of the team contributed to its success but certain players must be singled out. Jason Mamoe and Shadrach Hayward were respectively the best back and forward. Villiami Veetutu and Edwin Wright showed the greatest improvement in a team where all developed as the season progressed.

The season was capped off by a "Most Excellent Adventure" down to Raetihi where we stayed on the Marae.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and also managed to learn something.

Highlights were a victory over Ruapehu College 1st XV and a morning in the snow.

The team thanks all its supporters especially Mr and Mrs Herewini and Mrs McGavin.
