Principals Message 1989 saw the School Roll at Manurewa High School 'sky rocket,' to 1,587 students. What was perhaps most significant about this increase was the large number of senior students who returned to the senior school, with approximately 100 Seventh Formers and over two hundred Sixth Formers making up the roll numbers. These higher retention rates in the senior school have provided a challenge in terms of buildings, staffing and resources. But at the same time, the increased numbers of Sixth and Seventh Formers have provided the balance and stability in respect of leadership and role models to the rest of the school.

1989 has been dominated by Tomorrow's Schools. The early part of the year saw the elections for the Board of Trustees, and once this had been completed, the compiling of the Charter of Objectives for Manurewa High School. We are fortunate as a school to have such a dedicated and hard-working Board of Trustees, in view of the many tasks the school is undertaking and will undertake in the future. After consultation with the staff; parent community and students, the Board of Trustees have prepared a Charter which contains all that Manurewa High School is striving for. The Mission Statement which includes a statement that Manurewa High School believes in the Pursuit of Excellence in Academic, Cultural, Sporting and Social Activities, sums it all up. The next two years will see the compulsory requirements as contained in the Charter being translated into policies, for implementation in the classrooms. Again, a lot of hard work faces the Board of Trustees, staff, parent community and students.

During the year, our pupils have continued to excell in all areas, Academic, Sporting and Cultural. 1989 for example, saw Manurewa High School 2nd in the Auckland Mathex Competition and also the Auckland Science Exhibition. A tremendous achievement. On the sporting fields, accolades continue to be showered on our individuals and our teams, with any notable achievements being made at regional and national level in a wide variety of sports.

Culturally, our school continues to go from strength to strength. The growth in the number of pupils participating in the various clubs and activities, and the success of our musical "Upstage Left and Like It", are indicative of this.

1989 has also seen a number of changes to staff. We welcome Mr P Hornblow as Deputy Principal, formerly HOD Social Studies at Howick College. In his short time with us, Mr Hornblow has already made a considerable impact and is highly regarded for his fairness, consistency and genuine interest in students that he is working with. In 1989 we also say farewell to Mrs R James, Head of Music. in her six years with us, Mrs James has built the music in this school to its present, very high standard. She leaves behind her, a very strong and energetic Music Department, one which provides strength and enrichment for the entire School. Mrs James' contribution to the school has been outstanding.

I wish her well for the future, as she leaves to take up family responsibilities.

Progress in buildings during 1989 was quite hectic, as we rushed to meet the 1 October deadline. Two Science Laboratories were completely renovated and upgraded, and a new Computer Room was set-up. The entrance Foyer to the school was remodelled and up-graded as was the kitchen, changing rooms and storage facilities in the hall. A new Cebus Unit to house our Learning Adjustment Department and ESL Resource Centre is planned for 1990.

I wish to thank again, all the groups who have so loyally supported the school through the year. The previous Board of Governors and the new Board of Trustees and Parent Teacher Association in particular. To all those staff and pupils leaving, I thank you for your contribution while you were with us and I wish you every success in the future.

OBITUARY A tribute to Major Eric Ball BEM (Ret), Executive Officer, Manurewa High School, who passed away on 27 April, 1989.

Major Ball had held the position since his appointment on 17 March, 1986.

Major Ball was a loyal and dedicated member of the staff, who earned the respect of all those he worked for and with. His contribution was outstanding.

He is sadly missed.

At the start of the 1989 year, the following staff members took up positions at Manurewa High School: Mr M Donaldson - Learning Adjustment Department, Mrs J Eagle Home Economics, Miss K Inn es - Physical Education, Mrs B McKay - Learning Adjustment, Mr D Martyn - Music, Mrs ID Pinkney - HOD Languages, Mrs N Sumer - Biology and Science, Miss A Tye - Biology and Science.

During Term I, a number of staff were appointed to vacancies which existed at the beginning of the year: Mr R Smith - Mathematics and Mrs S Leslie - Physical Education. Miss Fraser returned during the yearfrom Leave to Australia to the Home Economics Department.

During Term I, Mrs V Shortland was Acting Deputy Principal and Mrs M Coles Acting Guidance Co-ordinator, until the arrival of our new Deputy Principal Mr P Hornblow on 17 April. At the end of Term I, Mr S Vause left to take up a teaching position at Kelson Boys High School.

At the beginning of Term II, we welcomed the following new staff to Manurewa High School: Mr R Bridgette - Technical Department, Mrs K Cernohorsky - Learning Adjustment Department and Mrs S Leslie in Physical Education. During Term II Mr J Beuning resigned on 21 July to take up a position at Marcellin College.

Mrs Dixon (Associate Principal) At the commencement of Term III, the following new staff were welcomed: Miss M Skelton - Biology and Science, Mrs S Impey Accounting/Economics and Mrs C Kuggeleijn in Physical Education and Mathematics. During the Term Mr B Palmer resigned his fulltime position to take up a part-time position in Mathematics. At Labour Weekend, Mrs J Lamb left on a year's Maternity Leave.

At the time of writing the staff notes, four staff have indicated their intention to resign at the end of the year: Mrs R James - HOD Music, Mrs M Martyn - Art, Mrs L Mulcally - English, Miss N Straughton English, Mrs E Donaldson has applied for a year's Leave to attend a special course at Secondary Teachers' College. During the year, a number of Relievers were called upon to assist in the staffing of the School: Mrs D Jenner was Acting Guidance Teacher during Term I, Mrs Mclnroe assisted in the Clothing area and Mrs J Douglas in the Physical Education Department. Our thanks to these regular Relievers. During the year a number of changes occured in the Administration/Ancillary staff. The tragic death of Eric Ball, the Executive Officer on 27 April was a great shock to us all. Mr Ball was replaced as Executive Officer by Mrs Janet Danks, former Board Secretary/Accountant. Mrs E Williams was appointed Administration Assistant and Mr G Wakeley as the new Caretaker. The new Groundsman Mr T Bourke was also appointed. Mrs J Lifting joined Mrs C Eagleton in the Office at the commencement of this year. To all staff who have left and to all those leaving, we thank you for your contribution while you were with us, and wish you every success in the future.

MRS RAEWYN JAMES The Head of the Music Department at Manurewa High School, Mrs Raewyn James is leaving to begin a family. She has been at the school for six years and is well known for the enthusiasm and dedication she has put into many aspects of music.

At the age of five she began piano lessons and later, at Wanganui Girls School, she was introduced to the violin. (She recalls she almost never went to the first lesson as she thought the instrument pretty dumb as it made little sound. She found out she was meant to put resin on the bow!)

Mrs James pursued her love of music at Auckland University graduating Master of Arts in Music.

At Manurewa High she quickly gained popularity through her friendly but professional attitude. She expected the best from students and got it. And to Mrs James this has been a highlight of herteaching career expecting the best from the musical students and never being let down.She has enjoyed most of all working with the students because of their positive attitude, humour and their resilience towards lite. She found the Vivace tour of the South Island in August 1988 stimulating and thoroughly worthwhile. Every performance was to a high level and the South Islanders loved the show, She feels very positive about the approach Manurewa High is taking toward the challenges in education and she leaves knowing the students are in good hands under the guidance of the Principal, Mr Ken Thomson.

Her role now is to her family and may return to teaching in the future. Before that, however, she wishes to explore a variety of creative interests.

The new Picot Report saw a new Board of Trustees with a brand new student representative. Six candidates ran for this position Karen Kennedy, Johnathon Hall, Jacqui Spurdle, Karen Anelay, Amanda Mackie and Kristina Cooper. I am pleased to say that I was elected as Manurewa High Schools student representative for 1989.

The title sounded impressive but I had no idea of the responsibility and education I was heading towards.

The first board meeting of the year came quickly and to say I was not nervous was a lie - I was terrified. All sorts of questions plagued my mind - What will they think of me? Am I allowed to talk? What do I wear? and so on. Looking back now there was no need for these fears as Manurewa High has a Board of Trustees filled with caring people. The first meeting saw Mr Houston elected as Chairman and Mr East as Vice Chairman.

There are several sub-committees and the ones I sit on are Uniform, General Purposes and Works. General purposes can deal with anything from teachers wanting leave to approving camps and out of school trips. Works committee deals with the school and its buildings, property and activities involving them. Although there are these committees our first and main task is to write the Charter. It is a job that is huge but something that has been a valuable task.

Being on the Board meant learning so much about the business side of the school and how it runs. There are many things that I have learnt this year. I cannot help but feel that the experience is so worthwhile that a lot of other students would enjoy something like this too.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone - especially my family and friends for the overwhelming support that I have been so lucky to have had. Being on the Board has been one of the greatest experience in my life and something that I will not only remember but value for years to come. I wish the new student representative in 1990 all the best. The best advice you could have is go for it, you'll never experience something so fulfilling in one year.

PREFECTS The 1989 prefects must be thanked and acknowledged for their outstanding contribution to Manurewa High School throughout the entire year. They have all been an involved and enthusiastic group from the outset. With a diligent approach to duties and a spirited involvement they have handled both official functions and social activities with ease.

The "Beach Dance" in term one saw the prefects organise and run (with outside assistance) this function for the junior school. It was very successful -and it was difficult to get the prefects themselves off the dance floor at the end of the night. The prefects "Leadership Day" was also held in term one with guest speakers Brother Pat Lynch, Principal of De La Salle College and Kate Richardson, Associate head of Adult Education at ATI. The seminar provided a suitable introduction to the year and allowed the prefects to function as a unit.

Term two saw the organisation of the ball which also was a great success and the annual prefects trip held in Rotorua, another great occasion.

Whether they have been playing softball with liaison third form classes, organising swimming, watching the toilets while on duty, etc, the prefects have proved beyond all doubt that they are outstanding and it has been our pleasure to work with them. Good luck to the prefects in 1990.

CULTURAL COUNCIL 1989 The first meeting of the year saw a large number of interested students ready to get started. The election of Amanda Mackie as Chairwoman with Alayna Batchelador as Vice Chairwoman, Secretary is Adele Inston and Assistant Secretary Helen Dennis. The Steering Committee was a large one and consists of Jodine Mills, Kris Cooper, Karyn Thomson, Stephanie Hynds, Sarah Marshall, Mark Harrison, Chris Metcalfe and Stephanie Yates.Our first task of the year was Front-of-House for the Term One Play Festival, A big thank you to all teachers that helped us with this.

Term Two saw the assembly and collection for Anna Keegan. A reasonable amount of money was collected by our avid supporters and again thank you to the students who supported this collection.

The Term Two Musical "Upstage Left and Like It" was a great chance for our help. Ticket sales at lunchtimes and Front-of- House support was something all who participated enjoyed.

Other events included the Fashion Parade and Senior Prizegiving to help with - a task which was received with great enthusiasm. We wish to thank all those who have helped the Cultural Council but most of all our loyal Miss Gallot - thank you for being with us 100% Best of luck for next year's Cultural Council - may year be a great one.

ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL A green thumb is not a regulation part of our school uniforn But some of us at MHS aspire to have them. We call ourselv Environmental Council and under Mrs Howard's expert tuiti tend the gardens of the school.

Activities this year have included painting four squares, pr and planting trees, weeding gardens and organising arbor dr The council is an enjoyable and fun way to become invol' the school. It is not only work but fun too.

Thanks also to Mr Kilgour, Mrs Sumer, Mr Watson ar Hodgson for all the work they put it. We appreciated it.

ARBOR DAY Each year a day is set aside to plant trees and Manurewa is no exception. Enthusiastic third and seventh forms were the to get into the act with pupils donating money towards a tree for class. Trees were purchased and sites around the school car selected with Mr Hodgson's class having the honour of pre di( the holes. Members of the Environmental Council arrived ear the "big day" to place the trees beside the hole and then it was for planting in honour of Arbor Day. Emma Jeffery 10

AUCKLAND SCIENCE FAIR Among the hustling bustling crowd of Manurewa High School there are a number of young Einsteins. Various science classes required pupils as part of their syllabus to put together a science project. For some pupils this was optional. After much hard work many top class projects were revealed and a well organised competition within the school was held. From this a number of winners arose with certificates being awarded. This was not the end but rather the beginning of a bigger competition.

All winners went into the Auckland Science Fair '89 which had the best science projects from all over Auckland. The Museum of Transport and Technology was packed with over 600 top entries. Ten of the Manurewa entrants entered in the Experimental Class had time off school to explain their projects to judges and when the announcements came it was Manurewa High that was awarded the second highest number of awards in the Auckland area.

CHEMISTRY PRIZE TO CRAIG SCRIMGEOUR As part of the observance of National Chemistry Day in June this year, eight seventh form chemistry students entered the essay writing competition entitled "Chemistry Serving the Community".

Craig Scrimgeour of 7WY earned second place with an award prize of $100 for his excellent essay "Chemistry Serving the Diabetic". Other seventh formers also were commended for their essays, in particular their presentation.

The competition was sponsored by the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry and was open to seventh formers throughout New Zealand.

IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE AWARD On behalf of Manurewa High School head prefect Karl Todd receives $100 from Trust Bank in the Pursuit of Excellence Award ceremony held in October.

Education Representative for Trust Bank, Mr S Farrant, said it was rewarding for the bank to realise the high calibre of Auckland students and the diverse fields of endeavour. The money is to be used to further the concept of striving for excellence.

JUNIOR MATHEMATICS AND MATHE' Everyone in forms 3 and 4 work on a Mathematics project in I 1. After the May Holidays the best projects are displayed in Manurewa Public Library and after three years our town is ge used to this colourful, varied and interesting display showing rr aspects of our lives are influenced or involved in mathematics.

More than 150 exhibits were displayed. One project compare( popularity of fast food outlets, another used mathematical shape a stained glass window. Others showed how transformation geom is used to design wall-paper and patchwork.

The best of these projects were sent to the Mathex competitic the Museum in July. Prize winners were:JUNIOR MATHEMATICAL GAME: First Ryan Wells, sec Louise Batcheldor JUNIOR MATHEMATICS IN ART: First Tanya Kelly, sec Rachel Bridge.

There was also a lively quiz night held this year at the YMCA. had four teams taking part under a new format and everyone ht most enjoyable evening.

Thanks to everyone who helped but especially to Mrs Waardenl who organised the exhibits and to Messrs Waardenburg and S who organised the quiz teams.

VISIT TO ENGINEERING SCHOOL A trip to the Auckland University School of Engineering by sei students in August made them realise that engineers were nee( because they were thinkers developing the world.

At the university the students were divided into groups and she the various departments where searching questions were answe and current projects were displayed.

The highlight of each faculty was as follows. The elect microscope (Chemical section), simulators of earthquakes buildings (Civil), analysis of speech patterns and research into vo operated machines (Electrical and Electronic), wind tunnels use testing America's cup boats (Aeronautics) and the use of h powered computers to solve complex equations (Engineeri Science).

A worthwhile trip for all.

JUNIOR The year began with a team of Dirk Cotter, Paula West and Bronwen Wilson . They won their first debate (That the capital of New Zealand should be moved to Auckland) arguing the affirmative against Howick College.

Dirk, Kyra Robertson and Shay Jackson took their talents to Macleans College accompanied by Miss Tye and Jayshiri Patel. They had a clear win taking the negative side "That school holidays are too long". Shay, with her dramatic, lively presentation, was the best speaker.

Next came Rosehill College with our team taking the affirmative side "That we should be happier if we knew less". The team of Dirk, Jayshiri and Shay lost narrowly with Jenny Hellyer as chairman and Kim Raynes as timekeeper.

An entertaining and amusing exchange was held at Tangaroa College where the team took the negative debating "That pollution is the price of progress". Manurewa won convincingly with Dirk being best speaker along with the opposition first speaker. The year finished with an impromptu debate with Papatoetoe High with Manurewa taking the affirmative "That if you don't blow your trumpet no one else will". The challenge was in presenting a del ivery with only twenty minutes preparation and again Manurewa won. Louise Ryan joined Dirk and Shay for this debate with high praise going to the speakers.

It was a satisfying year during which much confidence and experience was gained.

SIXTH FORM The Sixth Form Jaycees Debating Team, under coach Mrs R. Chan, had a successful season making it all the way to the regional semi finals.

The team of Mereana Run, Jo Wrigley, Alayna Batcheldor and loana Vaetoru successfully competed in four debates in the round robin competition. Out of the 42 schools entered they were one of the last three teams.

Moots the team debated included "That New Zealand Police Should Carry Firearms" and "That is the Driver that is the Killer Not the Car".

Alayna Batcheldor said:"We are all satisfied with the results which we achieved and we are looking forward to next year's competition."

The 1989 senior debating team consisted of Sarah Marshal speaker), Amanda Mackie (2nd speaker) and Kris Cooper speaker). Luckily, this year we managed to dodge the Audi Grammar debating machine but unfortunately we encount equally as formidable opposition in Pakuranga College as negated the moot that "The Tasman Sea is New Zealand's Wall".

This was unsuccessful but important in helping all of us to I( from our mistakes and to become comfortable with each oth debating style. I soon learnt not to worry that Kris went into ew debate with nothing prepared (and she always came up with a gi speech).

Our second debate was the negation that "We Honour Di Saints and Persecute Living Ones". This was against Papatoe High and again we were not successful-but we were getting be and we did not give up. We came back in our third and final deb, to win affirming the moot "Governments at its Best is Governme at its Least". It was pleasing to note the great improvement andt progress we had made. (This was all too much for Mrs Chan w seriously endangered pedestrians in the immediate vicinity McLeans College. This reaction was just reflective of her dedicati to debating). •Sarah Marshall

7th FORM SPEECHES The speech finals this year heralded once again the extremely high standard of public speaking at Manurewa HighSchool. The close competition was judged by Mrs R. Chan who had to select place winners who covered a wide range of topics.

This was just one of the thought provoking topics covered by 13 students in the sixth form speech finals.

There was a wide range of topics from the serious to the humorous, all of which were of a high standard. The close competition was won

by Dalwyna Run who spoke on "Children". She gave a flawless delivery. Mr W. Yardley judged the event and he said all speeches were of a high standard and illustrated the ability to cope with public speaking.

7th FORM Motutapu Island was the venue for the Seventh Form Camp this year. Eighty plus of us jumped on the buses to get to the wharves, enjoyed the ferry trip - but then we found we were on Rangitoto and had to climb to the summit. The teachers told us it would broaden our education but most of us found being educated in the rain somewhat difficult.

Then the two hour hike to the old army barracks on Motutapu...

During the time on the island we were given instructions from the various teachers (Mrs Dixon, Mrs Weatherly, Mr Kilgour, Mrs Howard, Mrs Dalton and Mr Yardley) on topics such as body language, problem solving, mathematical evaluation through search and rescue (more exercise) and other appropriate topics. On the last night a concert was held which was highly enjoyable and then the teachers organised a mock court with Mr Kilgour the chief judge.

SUN SURF AND SAND The sixth form Physical Education class had their outdoor EXPERIENCE up the Pararaha Valley in the Waitakere Ranges in West Auckland.

The beach was 2km wide, 8km long and the strong gusting winds made it feel like standing in front of a sand blaster. The first night was spent caving and then the group slept in the largest one. Next morning it was back to the car park to meet the professional outdoor education teacher. The other instructor had food poisoning so there was no abseiling. That evening the group hiked to the camp site and set up the tents in mud. Next morning was the big hike. It was a long haul and everyone ended up with wet feet (one Australian girl, Karen, fell in the river twice!)

6th FORM BIOLOGY CAMP

ivii wuri IMPOSSIBLE Despite being warned by hardened campaigners, foolhardy members of the Sixth Form Geography group took the plunge anyway. Our mission (should we decide to accept it) started on a clear, crisp summer's day which only heightened our anticipation.

Our hopes were soon shattered as "vindictive VK" handed out our million page booklet. This exercise was punctuated by exclamations of "you're joking" (aye Amanda) and other colourful comments.

The ever youthful "kamikaze Bargh" strode miles out in front as we ventured up massive hills and down deep dales. Despite being flogged to death and labouring like slaves on field reports, we experienced a lighter side to camp life. It wasn't really that bad and some even came back for more. The food was beyond description.

Tearful biologists wept for joy as they fell upon plate after plate of digestible delights. Once again our adopted "Ma" Briggs kept us sufficiently hale and hearty so we could withstand the rigours of the day. The culinary delights even prompted certain male members to sing in their chocolate pudding.

One evening we were entertained by dozy Dominic an alien Pakuranga Rambo. He was promptly dispatched by the fossils. Well done to the netball squad who interrupted their geography with a blinding performance in Pakuranga. They were Tadpole, Bullfrog, Blossom and Forgette.

Not to be forgotten are those stargazing members who so enjoyed their teachers' company that they volunteered to sleep on the verandah. On metaphysical matters, Guru Bargh provided spiritual enlightenment at the "Guns and Roses" gathering. Passive, cool, calm collected Mr Perry was an inspiration guiding us through the rigours, problems and dilemmas we faced while Mr MacMillan was tireless in his efforts to support all endeavours day and night..

Brother Bryan received an involuntary baptism with mop water after a little deception by Mr VK and excellent aim from Jeanette, Nicky and Sharon. Tania, Julia and Jeremy discovered the bottom of the river bed nose down after some foul play. The camp was enjoyable, educational, fun and an experience not to be forgotten. This is the Chocolate Fish Award Ceremony that concluded the camp.

When you hear the word camp you think of a time to relax yourself while surrounded by nature. Think again. Once experienced sixth form bio camp you do. Our lives were over the three days by the feared Famous Five- four biolog and one technician. Suddenly vast amounts of science r appears and then the dreaded work sheets. Oh no, expected to do some work. Waharau is a wonderful place of native bush, a stream and a beach. I soon changed my r I saw the work sheets centered around these factors and c hiring bulldozers to level the place. Camp was not all bad couple of minutes were set aside for eating and sleeping al died. To 1990 6th form bio students may the force be wilt will need it.

OUR EXPERIENCE AT THIRD FORM CAMP We thought the camp at Waharau was excellent because it had new and exciting things to do. It helped us gain confidence and how to work and co-operate with others. It also taught us we could do anything if we tried.

We found things we never knew we were good at and gave encouragement doing activities we thought we could not do, The teachers gave encouragement and their faith helped us overcome the fear of thinking we could not complete a particular activity.

Everyone had to do duties such as the dishes, serving meals and cleaning up the camp.

We enjoyed sailing the most because it was easy to learn and we also enjoyed canoeing (as long as we kept our balance!)

SPIRIT OF NEW ZEALAND A trip on the Spirit of New Zealand can be compared to a 10 day :ruise on the Love Boat.

A typical day begins with your cruise directors giving you a friendly wake up call at the reasonable hour of 5.55 am.Aerobics class is situated on the foredeck where a refreshing dip is undertaken by all in the luxurious swimming facilities. Yes you guessed it. It was over the side and into the winter waters of the Pacific.

Like the Love Boat the ship was always immaculately clean. Each passenger was in "the same boat" and we were all fortunate enough to have the satisfaction of scrubbing, sweeping, dusting, wiping and polishing the ship.

Life was never dull as there were always activities planned such as paddling a rubber boat against 30 knot winds, having a quick hop, step and jump (and a stumble, stitch and pant) over Kawau Island or maybe such excitement as climbing the mast.

If you want to experience the meaning of "Army meals" and "now showers" then the Spirit wants you.

She too went on the Spirit of New Zealand for 10 days and like the others was not that keen on the early morning dive into the ocean.

However, she enjoyed making new friends and exploring new places.

The 5CG student clearly recalls being caught in four metre swells and 50 knot winds. The voyage was so rough that day she was thrown from her seat when they were having lunch...and everyone laughed.

DAVID ZIEGLER 6 LM ON THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

In June I flew to Wellington to meet the Spirt of New Zealand an( those involved in the sailing. The yacht is 147 feet long, has a bear height of 30 feet and a sail area of 7600 square feet. The yacht ca carry 42 trainees, 4 leading hands and 7 adult crew.

Anyway we did some really amazing things like climbing the ma; and walking out along the yards and boy, when the yacht is rockin from side to side rather badly you definitely do not want to stay thei too long !Also crossing Cook Strait was an experience to t remembered. The weather was so wicked that even the captain hE his turn hanging over the side.

Every morning we were up at 6 am for our daily swim around tl yacht in low temperatures.

Like others on the Spirit of New Zealand, David found life on board Spirit of Adventure busy, entertaining and exciting. There were many duties to undertake with the other 24 trainees guided by eight officers. They toured the Hauraki Gulf and when they tied up on the barrier, the team climbed Mt Hobson and enjoyed the panoramic views. Returning to the vessel they also saw the old kauri dams.

David feels he never had time to rest and appreciated he had been put through a big test of stamina and fitness.

The highlights of my voyage were probably.'Carrying rubber boats over a large hill in pitch black darknei through creeks and over banks.

The contests eg rope tying, stupidity and the famous throwing contest.

It was great fun making many new friends. It was also a learn experience as well.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES AWARD OF EXCELLENCE This competition was jointly run by Singapore Airlines and Young Enterprise. All competitors had to submit a mid year report on their Young Enterprise Company. From these 53 entries, twenty were selected for the semi finals. Another report was submitted and five finalists went to Wellington to compete for the award. The four students involved, Andrew Cochrane, Karen Kennedy, Scott Nicolson and Carl Johansen had to present a hypothetical roan application to a Board for a loan of $3500 to expand their business. Manurewa High's Young Enterprise State of the Art Enterprises came runner up. The prize is a trip for two to Singapore with all expenses paid leaving on 9 December.

After being driven to a heliport in a stretched limosine, 16 year old Shane Hansen swooped to school in a helicopter.

It was an exciting time for the sixth former who received the rides after winning a local competition. "It's the first time I've done anything like that and it was great."

Shane had entered a competition to design the back of an army bag. The talented art student designed faces, logos and labels and received top recognition. Private Radio FM89 and Doyle's Army Navy and Camping store in Manukau promoted the competition.

Two disc jockeys judged the entries.

And on her 14th birthday, another Manurewa High School student, Lucy Barr, heard she had won a commodore 64 home computer after entering the Klipbind Assignment Competition.

Lucy said she was looking forward to extending her computer skills.

As part of the prize, Lucy won for the school calculators to the value of $1000 to be used in the Mathematics Department.

NICOLA RIMMER IN JAPAN

Konnichiwal I am now well through much of my year in Japan and have to Japanese life. Almost everthing is very different to New The food was the first thing to adjust to. I eat rice ever breakfast, lunch and dinner along with a lot of food whir identify. Raw fish is delicious.

In the beginning I had a big language problem. Most of can speak very little English while the others can speak ni even after studying it for five years. This is not surprising rea all the teachers of English can speak English either. I had Japanese fast. I also had to get used to school on Saturda) first I was almost falling asleep in class on these Saturday m The Japanese people are very kind and helpful and love foreigners. It was very easy to make lots of friends. I have nc so many compliments before this year.

My time in Japan has been lots of fun and I am learning about the country that a tourist never sees. If anyone is about becoming an exchange student don't just think about it.

STUDENTS' INTERNATIONAL CLUB

ITALIAN STUDENTS AT MHS

This year was one of our most international. Man Ebinuma was our only long programme AFS student this year but Cristiana Benedetto and Tommaso Gori from Italy were welcomed in the second term.

This year the school was visited by two Italian student American Field Scholarship short programme during term to were Cristiana Benedetto Azzeglio, near Turin in North Itt Tommaso Gori from Siena in Central Italy. Cristi was in the E form and was hosted by the Ritzema family. She made many and hopes to return to New Zealand in the future. Tommaso the sixth form and stayed with the Gore family. Like Cristi, made many friends.

The name of the club was changed from the old AFS Club to Students' International Club. Again it was very strong and made up mostly of senior students.

The first function for the year was a pot luck dinner held in the pavilion with AFS students from South Auckland and Auckland chapters. This was a huge success and gave a great start to the year. The highlight of the year would have to be the International Week held in the last week of term two. Fifteen students from the greater Auckland area were hosted in Manurewa High for a week with students being representatives of Italy, Switzerland, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, USA, Argentina, Canada and Malaysia. The first official function was the pot luck dinner where there were a huge range of international dishes.

This was followed by students performing one national item. The next day involved a bus trip with the first stop to meet the Mayor, His Worship Barry Curtis. Then it was oft to St Stephens College where the group was given a concert, a tour of the grounds and lunch. Later the bus stopped at the Clevedon Wool Barn. The South Auckland tour proved to be a hit for the students.

On the Wednesday students spoke to classes and attended the school production, Upstage Left and Like it while on Thursday the students provided morning tea for the staff. At night a dance was held and it was apparent that all students from around the world like to dance! Many friends were made during the week.

It was a successful year for the club thanks to Mrs McDowell and Mrs Sumer who gave support and leadership throughout the year.

Thanks to the families who hosted students -without whose help the international week could not have been held.

AND HEAD GIRLSARAH VISITS !TA Amazing and Incredible Experience I spent two and a half months over the Christmas Hold Cesena, Italy, as part of the AFS Short programme. I stayed wi Balestri family who lived on the Adriatic coast. Cesena is a c town with narrow cobbled streets and beautiful old buildings. Bec Christmas was so close the town was alight with decorations the streets with red carpets and trees along the footpaths.

And it became quite clear to the locals I was a foreigner wit fair skin and blond hair (the Italians had olive complexions and hair).The locals were patient with my language keeping in mint difficult trying to explain where I was from when they had not hi of New Zealand in a language I could not speak or understand. i lucky to travel extensively and visited places like Florence, It and Bologna. These places were quite amazing. It was great to the Italians go about their daily tasks and I enjoyed my time in h (As you can imagine I have hardly scratched the surface of places I saw and things I did although I did take quite a I photographs.)

MUSICAL - FROM A SPECTATOR'S POINT OF VIEW

The room went black and all eyes were focused on the stage, all noise was stilled - the shufflings on the hard wooden seats, the murmerings of the crowd and the tunings of the band. The atmosphere was a tangible presence of explosive excitement. The spotlight lit upon a lone figure at the front of the stage. The musical had started.

From start to finish 'Up Stage Left and Like it' was professionally performed by all participants - Actors, singers, dancers and bandmembers. There was not a minute in the whole of the production when the stage area did not claim a spectators eyes. The parts of the actors/actresses were well chosen and because of strong personalities the charactors were a huge success.

With the singers making timely intrusions into the dancing part of the musical, to add a comment, or teach a lesson in the way of song.

The whole musical fitted together well, with the band keeping the musical running at a pace which kept an electrical tension revolving around the stage.

On all faces of those participating were smiles and a sense of achievement as yet another minute of another performance passed by. It was easy to tell from a spectators point of view that each individual on the stage area had worked hard for this night of performance, it was also obvious that every individual was thoroughly enjoying themselves.

The talent shown on the stage, in the singing area and down with the band was superb, people you would never dream of as a dancer, were dancing to fast music with difficult moves and thoroughly exhausting actions. Among the singers were people who were singing with the best of them, the solos were great with a range of voices and an excellent back up system with the rest of the singers, and the band making explosive sounds from below to add the atmosphere portrayed on stage.

'Upstage Left and Like It' was a musical to remember, a very entertaining night and a great credit to all who took part. When seeing the musical it is so obvious to all that the talent in this school among the students and teacher is of a very high level and such musicals produced by this school are nothing but professional in every way.

SIXTH FORM DRAMA

A year to "discover" ourselves, check out the talent, have a good time and basically make fools of ourselves. Yes, this is the 6th form drama and it really is a worthwhile subject. Term one saw us putting in about five one act plays for the "One Act Play Festival". This was fun putting together and we got to know each other and to see what it is like running around, making props and organising costumes. In term two some were involved in "Bad Jelly the Witch" played in front of primary schools and it taught us much about acting and organisation.Much of term two went into "Upstage Left and Like It".

An excellent time in the costume room, the unrehearsed acting, the behind the scenes, odd jobs and on stage.

WHAT GOES INTO GETTING A PRODUCTION READY The day of the audition arrived and everyone was feeling excited.We were expected to audition for singing and acting as well as dancing.

I went along to all three and the teacher in charge gave a mark from 1 to 10 and at the end of the audition the teachers met to compare notes.

The following week the results went up and the 50 best were selected.

That same day Mrs Graham held a meeting to explain what would be happening and then we were allocated parts. Immediately, the dancers were into rehearsing.

Most lunch times were spent in practices (as well as every Monday night and Sunday afternoons). It was a lot of fun but heaps of work. Slowly everything started to take shape, The three day camp at Willow Park was also great with much being accomplished between the singers and dancers. Once back at school other people became involved with such things as lighting, make-up and publicity.

If anyone asked I'd say go for joining a musical drama production as it a big challenge but considerable fun.

become a 7th former. Well th is year 79 of us enjoyed that wonderful experience.

"7th formers are people to look up to, leaders of the school, an example to thejuniors" said Mr Thomson the first time he addressed us. There can't have been anyone listening.

If the rest of the school could have seen us at camp they'd be shocked and horrified. Men dressing up as women; a boy getting gang bashed by his mates before having his shorts removed; teachers applying peanut butter and flourto student's hair (shampoo or conditioner?); a "who's got the soap?" session in the showers; a false fire alarm (as if we'd fall for "I thought it was a light switch"); not to mention Mr Yardley's horrendous running shorts.

The evidence of our fun-laving, boisterous nature was in full view at school as well. Last Card became an art form, with many shredded noses and fingertips to show for it. The pavilion (or Pleasure Dome) was always filled with all kinds of music, from the superb (Wet Wet Wet) to the pathetic (30 seconds of Guns n Roses). Our cleanliness and good habits were shown in the way we maintained the kitchen. More coffee went on the floor than in the cups, and we were frequently accompanied by hordes of sugarstealing ants (which strangely enough didn't take too kindly to our microwave) and we were even visited by a mouse at one stage (shame we didn't have the microwave then!). Culinary masterpieces were prepared in that kitchen. Egg and chips, merwangs, ham and jam sammies, croissants with salad (poofters), meat pies, hot dogs, you name it, we ate it. Add to that the numerous delivery pizzas and you have a well fed, gas filled 7th form.

As a whole the 7th form got along great, constant insults were displayed on the noticeboard (what does skin, skin, skin, skin mean?) rumours of parties spread like wildfire (Fiascos), waterfights errupted often, and if anyone did anything stupid (like being photographed naked) you could guarantee on 78 other people knowing about it.

Weil (no-one got iebb I we were a pretty commendable 7th form.

MISS SOUTH AUCKLAND: WENDY PETRIE This year has been both challenging and rewarding for seventh form student, Wendy Petrie.

A part time model and dancer, Wendy won the title of Miss South Auckland from 18 other contestants. This pageant was one of five regional contests including north, central, east and west Auckland.

Wendy was encouraged to approach a modelling agency by past pupil and full time model, Sarah Winkle. Sarah had seen Wendy in the Manurewa High School fashion parade and offered to take Wendy to her own agency.

Wendy entered the Miss South Auckland contest to gain catwalk and modelling experience. Being a dancer and cheerleader for the Auckland rugby team, Wendy is used to performing in front of crowds. She enjoys outside activities but found she had to manage time carefully to fit in school assignments, homework and bursary study.

Wendy will be required to make various public appearances in the South Auckland area before crowning her successor next year.Also in the contest was sixth former Angela Salmon. She gained a high commendation along with two other contestants.

FASHION PARADE There was an international aspect to the Fashion Parade organised by the Parent Teacher Association this year. There was an exciting display of many different modes of clothes presented to the large and enthusiastic audience by students of the school. Hours had gone into rehearsal and on the night all went well. The event was the main fund-raising exercise by the PTA and congratulations must go to all concerned.

BOYS AND GIRLS 1ST X1 After considerable planning and several pre-tour events for the players all was put to the test during the week of 7 August to 1 1 . Two immaculately dressed teams left MHS for a tour of the Central Plateau region. First stop, Tokoroa, John Selby showed fine sportsmanship inspite of harsh refereeing. It was a good first day winning 3-1 for the boys and a nil all draw for the girls who had most territorial domination.

Day two was at Taupo where the girls played exceptionally well and were unlucky to draw 1-1. The boys played hard but fair developing running off the ball and network passing. On Wednesday it was off to Rotorua where the girls team fought very hard despite playing skilful and well-drilled teams. The boys also faced formidable opposition from Rotorua Boys (a team that played Saturday Senior football).Although the boys were down 2-0 at half time they drew 22 by the final whistle. Chris Hellyer will never forget his classic post header in the last minute to level scores and the girls support during the match was superb. Over to Hamilton for the last two matches.

Once more there was tough opposition and despite injuries, illnesses and tiredness, all gave their best.

The players returned with five days of happy memories with thanks to Mr Pedley, Mr Van Kral ingen, Miss Briggs, Mrs Yates and Mr Edel.

BOYS FIRST X1 SOCCER

Once again "VK's Vandals" to the field with vivacious vigour, fearless fury, optimistic from the outset, marginal fitness and endless sporting quality. The well-oiled, smooth running, playing machine ran over the fields in the Counties district winning some games and losing some too. It was a great effort by all team members with special mention of Ky lie To nar who was always a solid, reliable backup as well as a great striker and scorer in her best moments.

A year that has seen a more professional and dedicated approach to soccer which was reflected in the developing of superb team spirit and some gutsy performances.

The team finished mid table in the Manukau Secondary Schools league and looks set to improve in the next year or so. Unfortunately the team will need to replace Grant Lequesne, Peter Corson, John Selby and Greg McMahon who are leaving. Each of these players has contributed in a variety of positive ways and greatly appreciated by all involved. As captain, Greg McMahon has been inspirational to the team especially on the field where he "shows the way" through sheer determination reflected in his ability to play in almost any position. He ended the year as leading goal scorer and it was just reward that Greg was voted Most Valuable Player by his fellow socqer players. -The support the team has received from parents, the PTA and the school in general has helped to lift the image of football an this will hopefully continue.

Even though it may not have been the most successful season in terms of high goal scores, it has been the best season in terms of a team that knew each other well that played with conviction, dedication and commitment. Credit must go to Mr Van Kralingen for his patience and perseverance and the vandals will be back next season Sarah Marshall

It was a tough struggle at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Tournament held in Auckland in August but the Manurewa High boys team came out victorious.

Against more than 40 other teams from throughout the country, the team of Jason Todd, Jason Sexton, Kahu Simmonds, Carl Moon, Jason Woofe and Cedric Naera established themselves as early leaders. However, they had to work hard in every match to fend off strong attacks.

Fitness and skill was a major factor in the boys' success. For three years Westlake Boys held the trophy before Hamilton Boys High claimed it but in 1989 the glory went to Manurewa High.

The girls were highly regarded in the competition. They played extremely well and it was felt by coaches Mrs Eagles and Mr Grbin that the girls were unlucky not to be placed higher than fourth. The girls's team was NZ junior squash representative Judith Hill, Rachel Baker, Cherie Hill, Justine Matthews, Sandra Moody and Melissa Maurice.

NISSANMANUREWA HIGH CYCLING 1989

One thing that impressed me this season was the dedication shown by riders. It was quite clear early in the season that the teams meant to do their best at the Auckland Waterfront time trials and at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cycling Competition held at Levin.

The girls(Georgina Hooper captain, Alice O'Brien, Michelle Bellamy, Christine Miller, Kristen Clarke and Lynley Hooper) were placed third at the end of the waterfront season behind the strong Epsom Girls Grammar and Diocesan teams.

The boys (Paul Browne, Bryan Hughes, Brett Olsen, Adrian Arnold and Emiel Logan) steadily climbed in places during the year bringing credit to themselves. Other keen riders to take part included Stuart Cook, Justin Brown and Andrew Smith.

Both teams showed courage and skill at the nationals with the girls being placed 6th and the boys 13th. A great effort at this level with often only seconds between teams.

NETBALL It was a successful season for the netball players with representation at the Manukau Netball Teams Competition. Four of our eight teams also made it into the semi finals with the following achieving places.Senior B 3rd Manurewa 4B 4th Manurewa 3A won the 3rd form A grade Manurewa 3B runner up in B grade Special congratulations to the 3A players and the 3B players. A great effort by all.

With Mrs Shortland to pull them through, the team participated in the North Shore and Papakura tournaments. Also during term two the team competed in the Manukau Secondary Schools competition every Wednesday afternoon.

Regular practices were held so one hundred per cent effort could be put in during the season. The team was: Carol Bennet (vice captain), Ella Grace (who left during the season), Leah Spittlehouse, Lisa Warren (left during the season), Nicola Colson, Peggy Noovao (captain), Rachal Wheeler, Kim Massey, Kaye Hui. The year was enjoyed by all with thanks to Mrs Shortland and Mrs Wheeler for the coaching and umpiring.

1st XV RUGBY: A REVIEW

The 1989 1st XV were a pleasure to coach and take anywhere. The maturity and behaviour of the players was outstanding and during the South Island trip in particular they were a credit to themselves and the school.

It was hoped that the feat of the 1988 1st XV could be emulated and the Counties 1st XV competition title retained. This was not to be and major injuries to three key forwards for much of the season did not help in this goal. When the team clicked some very good performances resulted. Into this category would be the wins over Seddon High School, who were at the time we played them near the top of the Auckland Secondary Schools Competition, Avondale, Papatoetoe, the competitive game against James Cook and Aorere College.

Games we lost narrowly saw some good performances as well and the second half against Christchurch Boys High School and the first game against Wesley were examples of this.

CAPTAIN'S REPORT The highlight for the year would have been the South Islam There were four matches with only one loss to Christchurch High. From this lesson the team's performance gradually imp as it went from Christchurch, Ashburton, West Coast and NE Thanks to Mr Bentley and Mr O'Dea who organised the tot a special thanks to Mr Monk who helped look after the team the early stages of the tour.

To the team, you have been an inspiring and supportive to lead. For those who are leaving, I wish you all the bestfor the and those returning, have an enjoyable 1990. On behalf of the I would like to thank Mr Bentley for the time and effort put in team.

Mature, gifted and capable of taking opposition teams apart. Will play rugby in the future to the highest level. His season was blighted by injury and we missed him badly. Salu Palelel: Vice captain. Inspirational leader and player. Tough, hard, ruthless. Has a very bright rugby future. Gavin Misiepo: What a season! Seasoned veteran prop, tough, tenacious and very good. David Alaelua: Powerhouse hooker and a very gifted ball player with excellent skills. A great season. Missed badly in the South Island. Paul Timu: A great season and played consistently good rugby. Experienced, tough and with Gavin Misiepo, indispensible. Mark Cooksley: The kingpin forward laid low by two tragic injuries which restricted his games to only a handful. The highest rugby honours await him. Louis Solia: Words cannot express the debt the team owe to this lionhearted forward. Tremendous work rate and a quite outstanding rugby season. Without Louis the team effort would have suffered badly with the injuries to other players. Scored the best try of the season on a 50 metre run from a "willy away" against James Cook.

Philip Smith: A great team man. Erratic performances marred his season but concentration will see more performances like the Seddon game. Robert Ah Chong: A very good rugby season.

Strong on the tackle and on the burst. A bright future and unlucky not to have cemented a place in the representative team. Chris Ikitule: Erratic start to the season but too good to leave out of our team. Fast and quite brilliant on the burst and keeping the ball "live".

Paul Candy: Exported to Japan for much of the season. Played the last few games. Fast and a bright rugby future is assured, Simon McKearney: Has class written all over him. The fastest schoolboy loose forward I have seen. Hyper active, into everything and possessed of the two attributes that will get him to the top-brains and speed. How he missed out on the NI Under 16 team after being the outstanding loose forward of the tournament is one of life's mysteries. Martin Monk: Young winger who is developing well.

Plenty of confidence will help his season next year. Great centre kicker. Kahu Simmonds: Loyal and outstanding personality. Played well and perhaps unlucky not to get more games. Craig Peebles: Developed very well all season and played some very good, solid games. His four tries against Aorere illustrated his ability. David Dunn: A real find and developed into a very fine lock forward. very strong and has an exciting future. Gary Payne: Fast and developed well during the season. Suffered a little because of the competition for games among the loose forwards. Brandon Mackie: Young hooker and with this season behind him and plenty of hard work has a bright future. Carl Moon: Started out in the backs but really found his niche as a blind side flanker. Was shaping into a very fine prospect when injury finished his season. Cedric Naera: Indestructible and gutsy . Two years behind the forwards and without missing

a game. Quite an outstanding player with a very bright future.

Patrick Te Rito. Young number 8 and flanker who took his chances with the injury of Karl Todd and played excellent rugby. Will be a real asset next season. Zalmon Ramsay: A real find and a gifted player with flair and an eye for the gap. Played some excellent games.

Raymond Sagapolutele: Very good team man and played well when he got his chances. Leslie Little: Shaping into atop prospect as a tough, mobile prop when he left.

2ND XV RUGBY Coach:Mr N Dowden After scraping a team together and entering a team at a very late stage in the competition, everything looked quite promising up to through the third game. At this point the team was soundly beaten

by Papatoetoe 1st XV . Injuries plus poor team morale led to the development of poor training turn-outs with corresponding limited performance on the Saturdays.

The team did manage three wins which was a big improvement on last year's standard and the year's forward play was vastly improved.

Individuals like Norman Aman, Maurice Lipsham, Mokoia Anani, showed great strength and determination when running with the ball or setting up play. Tali Filihia, Faltari Sao and Leigh Byrt all showed fine levels of skill and commitment in the backline running straight and hard or cleverly darting through gaps.

It was pleasing to see newcomers like John Morgan, Scott Nicholson, Clayton Hau and Robert Ramsley take an interest and support us when possible. Players like FilipeTunaki, Brett Besley, Eric Hooper, Michael Chiton , Lui Tiraga and Ben Schwenke performed well and produced good football on most occasions.

Despite the humorous losses, the players improved their efforts and gained much in working as a team.

BOYS HOCKEY This has been our most difficult year for hockey. We ha, tradition of entering three teams in the local competition butt we struggled to field two in spite of continued efforts by the to recruit more players. As a result we always played st sometimes had to default.

The 1st X1 won or drew several games against Rosehill Cook and Waiuku College. In a special match against a ver, Avondale College we lost 1-5 but performed very credita gaps filled by spare soccer or rugby players. Another excitin was a special match with Papatoetoe High which resulted draw. Brad McKenzie as captain always provided valuable lea Brad and Gareth Wilson were outstanding on defence. Or Sanjay Soma and Matthew Clark scored many fine Congratulations to Sanjay who was chosen to represent Ar Under 17s.

The 2nd X1, despite being short in numbers, played during the season. Twice with only eight players we were come out winners. Malcolm Frith, Darryl Luxmoor, Marc Di) Mark Simmons improved greatly during the season. Wiremi terrified smaller players with his low, hard hitting. Our two "sr Warren Ross and David Stanley gave good steady support.) the nucleus of a very good team.

GIRLS 1ST X1 HOCKEY It was not for lack of trying. There was insurmountable enthusiasm and energy but unfortunately this did not show on the scoreboard.

We were up against tough competition and perhaps we will be fitter and wiser to win games next season.

The team won against Epsom Girls Grammar 1-0 while the rest of the season went by with a bit of screaming from the captain Louise Turner and coach David Mundy.

The team appreciated the efforts of David and Mrs Weatherly both of whom gave sound advice and encouragement. The team was captain Louise Turner (Kelly Jackson for the first half of the season), goalie Petrina Riley, Jeanette Bullock, Emma Ritzemma, Karen Verheul, Justine Bean, Jo Wrigley, Angela Williams, Nicky McMahon, Sasha Robertson, Lynne Weatherly, Zoe Catt, Sunita Soma.

GIRLS 2ND X1 HOCKEY Every cold, windy Saturday morning eleven or sometimes eight girls from the 2nd X1 would trudge shivering on to the field.

We had quite a good season with 2 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws.

Even although the record was not very high the girls enjoyed themselves with thanks to Miss Inn es, our coach, who went through everything with us and gave us support. Regular team members were.-Kyra Robertson, Angela Temple, Vanessa Preece, Wendy Danks, Merci Martin, Sarah Sheehan, Sam Holgate, Rhonda Small, Melissa Murrell and Jayshri Patel. Promising late editions were Victoria Richardson and Rebecca Cameron.

TENNIS INTERMEDIATE BOYS

JUNIOR GIRLS This year we were able to field a junior girls team which consisted if Sarah McWilliams, Megan MacDonald. Jodine Murphy, Lisa larland, Tania Rankin, Michelle Strudwick and Lisa Barr. All players 'roved to be reliable and well turned out at games and their ierformancewas always of a good standard. Megan MacDonald and iarah McWilliams worked well as a double pair and won the plate ompetition in the Manukau Secondary School Championships.

NTERMEDIATE GIRL ;apably led by Kim Blackman, the intermediate girls always at3mpted to give their best. The side included talented performers like ingela Philpand Mansa Tom ic and it was pleasing to see new layers like Adele Devitt, Claire Bullin, Serina Mohammed and rances McCarthy becoming involved. Angela Philp and Kim Blacktan represented the school at the Manukau Championsips.

The intermediate boys displayed similar enthusiasm producing outstanding results. The team consisted of Dean Thomson, Darryl Lockhead, Alan Madgwick, John Cousins, Brent Petrie and was well captained and organised by Steven Brindle. Individuals like Steven, Brent and John always produced tennis of a high level while Dean and Darryl performed well in the Manukau Championships.

SENIOR BOYS The team of Jamie Johnson, Din Tran, Greg McMahon, Chris Steptoe, Trevor Rooderkerk and John Selby showed a vast improvement on last year's performance. Individuals like Trevor showed outstanding ability while Din and Chris always worked persistently at their games and managed to reach the final as a doubles pair in the Manukau Championships.

SENIOR GIRLS The senior girls always fought well in their matches and often games played out to deuce before opponents gained the final points to win.

The team consisted of Sarah Barr, Carol Burnett, Andrea Horton, Melanie Houston K. Kennedy was again well managed and organised by Rachel Wheeler.

JUNIOR BOYS This year saw the arrival of a large group of enthusiastic and talented junior boy tennis players including Theo Coromandel, Giovanni Militello, Brendon Rout, Royston Seymour, Daniel Windsor, Craig Scholes, Erin Wharemata and Trung Tran. Four of the group, Giovanni, Trung, Royston and Brendon represented the school in the Manukau Championships. The team won most of the Saturday matches and always performed at a high level.

These thrashings prompted action to be taken and the team was taken from C grade to B grade while the recently formed 3rd XI replaced us at C grade level). The 2nd X1 continued to play quality soccer winning most games Many thanks to Mr Hodgson and Mr Pedley for making everything possible and also to Mrs LeQuesne who helped with transport.Thanks also to the boys who tried so hard all season.

JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL This year we had a large team with varied ability from experienced to beginner players but everyone had the opportunity to play.

Games were held at Papakura High School on Tuesday afternoons which always presented a challenge for transport.

Most memorable was when Miss Tye's car refused to go on the return trip just outside the school gates.

Caroline Paul showed flair weaving on the court, Kowitee Kaukau and Rose-Ann Reid were promising beginners. Iris Morunga was always very strong. Our team greatly improved over the season as we played together and socialised well with other schools.

Senior English classes welcomed Keith Thorsen to our school. He presented a range of his poems in a highly entertaining programme and introduced other poets many of whom were school students enjoying creating original poems based on local scenes and downto-earth experiences.

Several of our students prepared for the visit by writing verse which Mr Thorsen took away and returned with encouraging comments.

RESOURCE ROOM RECOLLECTIONS - Lisette Wesseling As a third former I came to Manurewa High School like everyone else: unsure, afraid and totally in awe of this new place with seventh formers. Mr Thompson and detentions. Yet. as a blind person I was perhaps a little more unsure than others since I had to cope with 1500 kids running around, the size of the school and my concerns about what other people would think of me. Armed with a brailler, books and a lot of naivity I went to classes, happy in the knowledge that if there were ever any problems with my work I could go to the Visual Resource Room and seek help. The Resource Room has been a great support to me and to the other visually impaired students all of whom attend ordinary classes and hand in ordinary work. This support has helped me tremendously and has taught me to be an independent and integrated member of the school.

Ever since last year I have been using a Keynote, a small personal computer, instead of a brail ler for all my class work. As well as making my job easier and much faster, the lack of noise and occasional demonstrations have been particularly appreciated particularly by members of my seventh form history and Biology classes. The resource room has also provided me with all the braille materials I need, to say nothing of sundry calculators, optacons, IBM PCs and shelter from wet lunch times.

While progressing through the school, I have begun to think seriously about the changes this government is making regarding the integration of blind and other disabled people into ordinary schools. In the long term, this may mean a smaller number of blind people attending MHS. (Yes, fewer canes in the covered ways), but for the visually impaired person being mainstreamed on his own in a local school life can be difficult, both academically and socially. It is, for example much more difficult to tell ten people scattered from Whangarei to Invercargill about new developments in technology than ten people in one school in Auckland. Therefore, a person in Ohakune may never hear about the equipment that is available to help her and may not have as much access to braille material because of problems of distance and co-ordination. I feel fortunate that I have been able to work in a school where help and equipment have always been nearby, and I know I could not have achieved as much withoutthem. Certainly from a social point of view mainstreaming is a good idea, but unless extra teachers are provided for these children, only the bright ones will achieve their full potential.

Seventh form has been a lot of fun for me with obvious highlights such as seventh form camp and the ball. This is the real aim of mainstreaming, and I am glad and grateful that I have been able to enjoy it. This year, I leave along with those other third formers of five years ago, leaving the protection of school and eager to lead our own lives. Like Ben O'Meara, Ted McElroy, Jonathan Mosen and Mark Wilson, I am going to Auckland University, and I know my experiences at this school will stand me in good stead. I will no longer be able to rely on others to arrange the brailling of materials or the purchasing of equipment, but I know I have the independence and determination to succeed like those others before me.

MAORI CLUB One of the highlights of this year's Maori Club would have to be our performance at the Auckland Secondary Schools' Festival held at Western Springs Stadium in April.

Because this was so early in the year the intensive practice required set the pace for the rest of the year. We were soon involved in all day practices, half night practices, live-ins, live-outs and bulk buying of throat lozenges. It was all worth it when we were able to leave the stage at Western Springs with the satisfaction of an excellent performanece.

In the May holidays we travelled to Ngaruawahia for the Koroneihana competitions. After watching some of the competitors in the junior section we went away to polish up our intermediate bracket. Within a few hours our items were about as good as they were going to get - or so we thought - so we changed and got ready to go. We then travelled back to Turangawaewae for our performance.

This was going to be a memorable weekend. Up against learns like Gisborne Boys and Girls High Schools, St Stephens, Queen Victoria and Rutherford High School, we performed a bracket of a very high standard and were placed 4th for our performance.

As well as these two performances, the club has been very busy fundraising for our proposed new uniforms for next year. Numerous performances and other activities have been the result. Performances included appearances at Manurewa Marae (we now have a very close tie with the people there)he mihi aroha tenei ki a koutou, a combined performance with James Cook High School and Rosehill College at the annual festival for the four schools this year hosted by Rosehill. We supported the fundraising efforts of Clydemore Primary in Otara and at the end of term two we were part of an entertaining evening for the Turakina Maori Girls College tour. We performed in Southmall for Maori language week and took part in the Manurerwa ANZAC service. We also performed for two of the Manukau City naturalisation ceremonies.

Our parents and families have played an important part in the organisation of the club's calendar. As a result many of our performances have been for them with appearances at "Dress for Less" in Papakura, birthday gatherings, family get togethers, tangi - the list is endless. Thanks must go to all of our parents and families for the support that they have given throughout the year and to our dedicated tutors Keri Milne and Maehe Nikora and their families for the guidance and aroha that they have shown us. We all look forward to next year and the new members it will bring.

The aim of the visit isto see first hand historic places and artifacts and to gain a greater appreciation of Greece as a past powerful nation.

THE LIBRARY

LINK COURSE

For the first time, the Library is a centre of activity all day from 8 am.

Officially open before school and at interval, the only lull in activity is the 10 minute break at the beginning of lunchtime. Borrowing has also increased and the librarians are kept busy keeping up with the demand.

A keen group of pupil librarians under the capable leadership of Karen Anelay (head librarian since 1987) and Sarah Dunkley have done a great job.

The regular library team has appreciated the additional help of Mrs Cheesman and Mrs Shaw (who has also bought the additional skills of a trained teacher-librarian).As a result we have been able to perform some of the functions of a school library which it was previously impossible to do.

Another new service for tracking down and getting New Zealand articles has been provided with the help of the PTA who have donated microfiche readers and Index NZ (INNZ) fiche. We can now get hold of any information that is wanted. We look forward to another year of progress in 1990.

Every term a group of students made up of mainly 5th ant formers travelled to Otara to Manukau Technical Institute to about life at Tech.

The course I attended was technician opportunities for men, syllabus included making and testing concrete and soil sail using understanding and numerical control. We also used exper computers for computer aided draughting. We found that life at was never dull and very first day we went around South Audi looking at automatic lathes and sheet metal shops. Lecturers other students were friendly and I would recommend stud considering a technical institute course.

1988 DUX:GIoria Hooper

The epitome of academic success, the school dux, was achieved by seventh former in 1988, Gloria Hooper.

Specialising in mathematics and commerce orientated subjects, she gained very high standards in all facets of school work. A high achiever throughout her secondary school career, she was well equipped to gain the position of dux through mature study habits and accepting the challenge of the advanced classes. She was a prefect and a member of the Cultural Council and the American Field Scholarship Club while as a junior she took part in the orchestra.

At present she is attending Auckland University studying commerce.

High University Bursary Examination results assured her of a place in her chosen subject. When she completes her degree she may work in marketing and management.
