Principal's Message This year has been another excellent year for Manurewa High School.

Roll numbers were much the same as for 1987, with approximately 1,480 pupils. The school continues to receive many applications for out-of-zone places, of which unfortunately only a percentage are permitted to be enrolled.

Buildings continue to keep pace with development, and reflect the increasing complexity of our curriculum. 1988 saw the introduction of a video filming suite, and the completion of a Horticultural Laboratory, placed alongside the Horticultural uinit. The completing of the changing facilities, and the enlargement of the pavilion to include a large socialtype conference room, has been welcomed by all groups. This facility will now I am sure be widely used by all sporting groups within the school. 1988 saw the appointment of a number of staff at senior level.

Mr Bentley Deputy Principal, Mrs Shortland Guidance Co-ordinator, Mr O'Dea as Head of Physical Education and Sports Co-ordinator, who have bought a wealth of experience and expertise to the school.

During the year, we farewelled a long-serving staff member, Mrs Oates, who through her sterling efforts had built up Drama within the school, to its present high level. I thank her for her contribution to the school and wish her well for the future. Mr Kidd, Associate Principal, was appointed to the position of Headmaster at Christchurch Boys' High School, and took up his position at the beginning of term III, 1988.

During his seven years and two terms with us, Mr Kidd's contribution has been outstanding. His energy, industry and sense of duty was an inspiration for us all. Christchurch Boys' High School's gain is our loss, but never-the-less, we wish him the very best in his new position.

Our pupils continue to excel in all areas, academic, sporting and cultural which fully supports the school's objectives in maintaining standards, and in the pursuit of excellence in academic work, sport and culture.

It has been gratifying to note the growth of numbers of pupils participating in sports teams, and to note also how many are achieving at regional and national level; rugby, squash, girls' cycling, table tennis and cross country are areas where teams from the school have made national representation. The continuation of the Sports' Awards and Sports' Blues are keenly sort after by our young sportsmen and women, and provide an incentive for them, and a recognition of their fine achievements.

Culturally the school continues to enrich our students. 1988 saw the continuation of the Maori and Polynesian groups within the school, also the debating teams and drama. New for 1988 was a Grand Variety Concert in term II, which was most successful. Perhaps the highlight of the year in the music field, was the "Vivace" tour of the South Island, a group of 34 talented musicians, singers and dancers, led by Mrs James, HOD Music. The standard they reached was exceptional, and they were warmly received in all the South Island schools that hosted them.

I wish to thank all the groups who have so loyally supported the school again, through the year. The Board of Governors and Parent Teacher Association in particular. To all those staff and pupils leaving, I thank you for your contribution while you are with us, and I wish you every success in the future.

Mr Z R W KIDD In Term III, 1988 Mr Z R W Kidd became the new Headmaster at Christchurch Boys' High School. Christchurch Boys' High School's gain was Manurewa High School's loss. Mr Kidd came to Manurewa High School in May 1981 as Deputy Principal and within a brief time soon became well known for his firm, but fair guidelines on discipline and forthright comments on education matters. As he pursued a "no nonsense" approach to discipline, he quickly stamped his mark on Manurewa High School and the community. His was no easy job, as discipline - especially when one is on the receiving end of it - is not a job a person often gets thanked for. However Mr Kidd with his high education standards and ideals has won respect and admiration from students, parents, teaching colleagues and the local community.

When the school grew and administrative tasks became ever greater Mr Kidd became Associate Principal. Ever the self-disciplined and indefatigable educational leader and administrator, Mr Kidd took most of his previous duties as Deputy Principal with him to his new position. It is only in latter years that he has relinquished Forms 3-6 disciplinary matters to the Deputy Principals. Mr Kidd had overall responsibility for school discipline, relief staffing and the day-to-day duties of running Manurewa High School. This he has done with great expertise and efficiency.

Mr Kidd attended Scots College (Wellington) before attaining a M.A. (Hons) at Victoria University. After a year at Christchurch Teachers' College he taught at Auckland Boys' Grammar before becoming HOD English at Takapuna Grammar School. During his time at Manurewa High School Mr Kidd has encouraged and promoted sport, cultural and dramatic activities and productions within our school. His assistance help and expert advice was greatly appreciated, and will be remembered by alt Mr Kidd was concerned with the fullest development of staff and students alike. In Term 2, 1984, he was seconded to the Department of Education (Northern Region Office) to assist with the induction of List A teachers from Waiuku to Whangarei. He will be remembered for his 'straight talking', practical help and advice in this area. When Mr Thomson, Principal, was himself seconded to the Department, Mr Kidd was Acting Principal for a term. With his firm hand at the helm, he guided the ship "Manurewa High School" through stormy waters on several occasions and ensured that the direction of "the ship" was continually "on course".

Challenge is something which Mr Kidd issues constantly, and himself rises to continually. Discipline, he believes, comes from self discipline.

Mr Kidd's lessons and assemblies at Manurewa High Shcool will be something which will be remembered always. Students and staff alike looked forward to his stimulating, thought-provoking and vivifying assemblies. His educational philosophy is firmly established in the promotion of the standards of 'nothing-less-than-excellence' of academic, sporting, cultural and social activities within a school.

Our school has, understandably, a great pride in the standards which Mr Kidd has set and continued to maintain. The challenge which is issued to us all is to maintain the level of standards which has been shown to us by Mr Kidd. The school is sorry to lose such tremendous service and loyalty of a man of the calibre of Mr Kidd. His contribution to the life of this school is beyond measure.

Mrs Sharon Oates has been employed as a teacher of English and Drama at Manurewa High School since 1980. During these years, Mrs Oates held various positions of reponsibility in Drama and Administration. As teacher in charge of Drama„ Mrs Oates quickly became well known for her excellence in performance. Under her guidance, Drama grew in strength and expertise within the School, to the present heights that it has reached today. A very busy schedule of three productions per year, meant a huge amount of personal time and sacrifice by Mrs Oates. This was given unstintingly for the benefit of both the students and the school.

Mrs Oates was a woman of great energy, and an indefatigable worker, who always took excellence as her norm.

Mrs Oates demonstrated her versatility in producing a wide range of productions throughout her years as teacher in charge of Drama, and all productions reached a most professional level. In addition to Drama, Mrs Oates was involved in many other areas out of the classroom. She has at various times been Publicity Officer for the school, Editor of the school magazine, and Dean of the Senior School. The same dedication and commitment was clearly shown in these areas. In her capacity as Dean of the Senior School, Mrs Oates has enthused, encouraged and inspired both the staff and the students with whom she worked. She strove at all times to ensure that only the best was available for them.

As a member of the staff, Mrs Oates was highly regarded for her excellent sense of humour and her thoughtfulness for others. These qualities made her a most congenial colleague. Her resignation from school was sincerely regretted, and she is missed by staff and pupils alike. Never-the-less, we wish her success and happiness in her new career.

Three Staff Appointments Mr T O'Dea - HOD Physical Education and Sports Co-ordinator Mr T O'Dea was appointed Head of Physical Education and Sports Coordinator at the commencement of the 1988 school year. Mr O'Dea took over from Mr G Humphries, who retired as Head of Physical Education last year, and Mr I McNae who resigned as Sports Co-ordinator.

Mr O'Dea came to us from Aotea College in Wellington where he was a Physical Education teacher. Mr O'Dea has had a varied career in teaching, starting in the primary service in a number of schools, before ending up as Director of the Porirua Recreation Centre, where he was responsible for the organisation of community sports and recreation, with a particular emphasis on high school students. Already throughout 1988, Mr O'Dea has given a much needed impetus to sports within the school, with the result that there are now more teams competing in various sporting codes, and more teams succeeding. Mr O'Dea says there is a direct link with a positive classroom attitude and achieving in sport. He feels there is much untapped potential in many of the students who attend Manurewa High School. He would like to see quality coaches helping the young sportsmen and women, and intends to make full use of teaching staff and expertise from the community.

Mrs V Shortland - Guidance Co-ordinator Manurewa High School's new Guidance Co-ordinator is former Senior Mistress of Te Kuiti High School, Mrs V Shortland. Mrs Shortland took over her position from Mrs E Dixon who was appointed as Deputy Principal last year. Mrs Shortland has had a teaching career, mostly involved in teaching Physical Education, until her appointment as Senior Mistress at Te Kuiti High School in 1985. Already, Mrs Shortland has become well known to many parents and agencies that assist the school, because of her work in the guidance area during 1988. Mrs Shortland has received the New Zealand Intermediate Award in netball coaching, and has coached a variety of teams, including the Western Bay of Plenty Provincial side. She has also umpired at provincial level. Her experience with the netball teams this year has already brought out the best in the players, and is assisting in building up netball as a force to be reckoned with, within the school.

Mr B Bentley - Deputy Principal Manurewa High School's new Deputy Principal, Mr B Bentley was appointed at the commencement of the 1988 school year. Mr Bentley took up this position form Mrs M Atchison, who retired at the end of the 1987 school year. Mr Bentley has been a teacher of History, Geography and Social Studies, mainly in the Wellington and Wairarapa areas. He spent a year in Northgate in Norfolk, England, during 1982-83, and returned to a position at Tararua College, where he was at various times PR4 Head of Social Studies and Acting Senior Master. Mr Bentley has a keen interest in sport, particularly rugby and atheltics, both of which he has been ivolved with coaching for many years. He, like Mr O'Dea, is also very impressed with the talent that is available at Manurewa High School, and states that athletes could reach North Island and National level, with sound coaching and dedicated training. Mr Bentley was also 1st XV coach this year, and under his direction, the 1st XV won the Counties Secondary Schools competition. Numerous players were selected for Regional and North Island representatives; two players wee selected at National level.

As Deputy Principal, Mr Bentley is also part of the Senior Administration team effort within the school, and his responsibilities in this area have quickly made him known to staff, students and parents alike.

To replace these staff members, a number of new staff took up positions at the start of the 1988 school year. During Term I, Mrs J Burney left to take a position overseas, and at the end of the term, Mrs S Reid resigned her position. At the commencement of Term II, Mrs V Singh returned to the staff in the Mathematics department, During Term II Miss H Curran in the Art Department left, and Mrs S Oates - HOD Drama left to take up a position in industry. At the end of Term II, Mr Z Kidd - Associate Principal left the staff as a result of his appointment to Headmaster of Christchurch Boys High School.

During Term II, Mrs J Lamb was granted leave, to travel to England. At the commencement of Term Ill, Mrs S Graham joined the staff as head of Drama, and Miss N Straughton in English and Drama.

At the time of writing these staff notes four staff have indicated their intentions to resign at the end of the year: Mrs C Cottell-Mayhew in Mathematics, Mr S Vause in science, Miss V Kennedy in English and Miss K Bracefield in Home Economics.

1988 was a difficult year, with a number of staff vacancies occurring throughout the year. Special thanks must go to the relievers, who assisted in these vacancies: Mrs J Douglas - Science Term I, Languages Term II and Physical Education Term Ill; Mr N Hackett - Science Term II and Term III; Mrs A Singh - Science/Biology Terms II and Ill; Miss C Ellis Science Term I; Mr P Clifford - Mathematics Term I. To all staff who have left and to those leaving, we thank you for your contribution while you are with us, and wish you every success in the future.

THE LIBRARY With none of the interruptions of 1987, but with all the advantages of the extra space, new layout and more spending money (including the rest of what was raised in last years walkathon), it was action in the library right from the beginning. The library staff hardly knew whereto start in February, but quickly organised themselves into a book processing assembly line.

With the help of several volunteers, in particular Mrs Carol Tupe, a record number of books have been put into circulation. At the same time progress has been made with magazines, information files, learning programmes, displays, furnishings . .

The pupil volunteers have made a good contribution. Karen Anelay as Head Librarian and Andrew Rumsby as Deputy led by example, and there were other sterling performances. We have also enjoyed several social occasions.

It has been good to see the library getting good use by pupils and staff.

Librarians particularly appreciate those who know where resources go when not in use - and show it.

Thanks to all who have donated time or materials and have given any other support. You are helping create a magnificent centre of leisure and learning for Manurewa High School.

IMPRESSIONS As I wander around the school's ground I stop to think awhile and listen , noises all around Soft-humming noises come from classes at work Then there are the sounds of nature, gently as they are thin branches swishing almost violently as a quick breeze rushes through them Plants beginning to show new life in splurges of magnificent pinks, purples and golds Tall, round shaped trees dot the edge of the field While overhead the mood is broken by an occasional plane.

The ground in shadows, is slightly damp-dew not evaporated from last night's rainfall.

The mood is broken yet again, this time by the bell which sound interval The grounds then break into a torrent of noise as everyone joins me, out here on the field.

Science & Technology Week A number of enthusiastic science students both juniors and seniors became involved in Manurewa High School's part of a nation-wide emphasis on science.

During April many students had gathered material, analysed, assembled and finally presented projects ranging from studies of Manukau Harbour pollution to the technology involved in modern motorcycle engine pistons.

Completed projects were displayed both at school in classrooms, school library and the main foyer and the community in shop windows and the exhibition room in the Manurewa Public Library.

Our students shared in a joint display with some from James Cook High School in the Public Library.

The Science and Technology week which was observed by primary and intermediate schools - as well as secondary schools was intended to show the close link between the scientific research and principles of science and the practical aspects needed to bring the benefits of this research into everyday use to benefit the whole community.

At the end of the week we were presented with an address on Technology in Vehicle Manufacturing in New Zealand illustrated by a video and given by the Project Engineering Manager of Ford Motor Co., Mr Mick Stewart.

A former student Miss Rachel Clarke who is studying at the University School of Engineering spoke on the role of Women in Science.

Her talk was both interesting and challenging.

KATHERINE PATERSON On Tuesday, 16th August 1988, 8 pupils, along with a teacher and two parents travelled to Howick College Library to meet up with Katherine Paterson. We arrived about 20 minutes early so we had a chance to view the premises. We took our seats after looking around and waited for Katherine Paterson to arrive.

A lot of other schools were attending the meeting from the South Auckland Region.

When Katherine entered and took her seat the meeting began. We started off with Katherine reading aloud from Bridge to Terabitha, Chapter Five and at the conclusion we began asking her questions about the books she had written. She was very informative in answering which was really interesting.

She had written 9 novels which were; Jacob Have I Loved, Bridge To Terabitha, The Master Puppeteer, Of Nightingales That Weep, Great Gilly Hopkins, Sign Of The Chrysanthemum, Rebels Of The Heavenly Kingdom, Come Sing Jimmy Joe and a collection of Christmas stories, We were allowed to purchase books on our way out. It was an educational and interesting afternoon for all to enjoy.

SENIOR DEBATING SENIOR SPEECH FINALS 1 9•

The 1988 senior debating team did not get off to a great start this year - falling prey to the skill and talent of a very 'dynamic' Auckland Boys' Grammar team - negating the moot that 'Today's heroes are hollow!'

Although the defeat was fairly resounding, the team, (loan Vaetoru, Craig There was a high standard in the senior speech finals with 17 stt Pope and Sarah Marshall) put it down to experience and set to work on taking part. improvements.

Form 6 Geography Camp WAHARAU REVISITED For a short period of time a number of Manurewa geographers and others took the opportunity to experience the idyllic splendour of our rural hinterland. For some, the return to open fields, bush clad valleys and gently meandering streams was a traumatic experience. Some reverted to an "olde English" farming dialect (Cornwall we thought). Many a time was a sentence punctuated by a hearty gutteral Aaarg h I These outbreaks were most pronounced at meal-times when sixth formers came from everywhere to cram their plates with what can only be described as festal food. Speaking of food - congratulations to our cordon-bleu specialist (Mr Lees). No camp would be the same without him.

The fieldwork teams undertook a range of valuable, scientific investigations. Their contrasting work styles were a wonder to behold some worked quietly and efficiently producing work of exquisite quality.

Others fancying themselves as geographers philosophized about different techniques and civil war often ensued..

For sheer violence and vicious ruthlessness the gravel soccer matches couldn't be matched. The sixth form female members of the squad showed football skills that had to be seen to be believed. Many of the 1st XV rugby team members present, found it difficult to hack the pace of camp soccer matches. In fact Craig found the going so heavy he was forced to retire - to hospital. We feel his eyes must have been opened by this experience.

Our gratitude goes out to our camp uncle "Uncle John" for filling this important role with skill and aplomb.

By every standard - the amount of work done, the amount of food eaten the amount of fun had in some cases the amount of sleep lost the 1988 sixth form geography camp was an outstanding success.

SIXTH FORM BIOLOGY CAMP March the 2nd was well remembered and cherished by all Manurewa High Students. It was the day of the STRIKE and for most of us it meant an entire five periods off school. But I'm sure this day was most remembered by the budding, keen and eager biologists that turned up to the Compulsory Waharau Biology camp without a single hesitation or protest . (OK, so I exaggerate!)

The word 'camp' in itself may sound fun to you - but don't let yourself be fooled by the word. Instead envisage freezing water surrounding your ankles as you attempt to collect insects in mud and silt, imagine the excitement of walking miles over hills and fences to reach upstream, contemplate the sheer thrill of measuring your very own quadrants and transects, feel the achievement of sketching every detail of forest stratification and discovering what lies in different beach zonations, not to mention learning about astounding succession. However, the greatest reward for all was finally being able to collate and write up your resullts for hours, and the extreme privilege of being able to continue completing all five assignments in your very own "breaks", and yes, wait for it . . . we as enthusiastic sixth form biology students were even allowed to work till 10.00 every night!

Once each student had completed their work, much to all our dismay, we involved ourselves in night-time activities - for some it meant sleep, for others eating lollies, for a few - midnight strolls and for one it meant eating crickets!

Morning runs were met with equal enthusiasm as work itself, I mean what more could one ask for than a 7.00am start with a hop, skip and jump to the beach and back. If you were really lucky you were able to perform duties such as preparing the meals (which were suprisingly good, for camp 'food') and the really responsible students were even allowed to clean the toilets.

No, Biology "camp" can't be described as fun at all, instead it really was for all 50 students an exhilarating experience not easily forgotten!

"Sincere" thanks must go to Mrs Howard, Mr Parlane and Mr Hodgeson who not only sat up at night playing 'spotlight', but who were solely responsible for the work in which each one of us was "extremely" grateful 13 and thankful of.

CULTURAL COUNCIL Our first meeting in March elected Karina Sheaf as Chairperson, Vivane Nakhle as Hon. Sec. with the support of a steering committee - Mei-Lin Hansen. Fraser Dix, Peter Lowe, Katherine Stirling with two A.F.S. members, Kerry Sin and Vedyne Wright.

Fifth and sixth formers joined later for some of our projects.

Assemblies were addressed to gain support for the East Coast flood appeal for household goods and children's toys and books. The Red Cross acknowledged the collection of cartons and Kleensaks of goods.

Our second task involved Front-of-House duties for the "Billy Liar" drama season. Then in term II, members sold tickets and provided Front-ofHouse support for the Grand Variety Concert.

The loyal, regular devotees help with the P.T.A. Fashion Parade and ushering for the Senior Prizegiving.

We wish to show appreciation to staff who have attended, Mrs Taylor, Mrs Mulcahy, Mrs Chan, Mrs McLaughlan, Mr Waardenburg and our long-term convenor, Miss Gallot.

Thanks to all long-serving members and best wishes for the future.

Head of Biology and Horticulture, Mrs Howard, is behind the organizii of the activities. This year Mr Hodgson has stretched his horticuttu training when we weeded the schools native tree area and cleared tree that had been sliced in half by lightening. The famous artistically inclirt Mr Kilgour proved a great asset in the rubbish bin painting activity, couple of hours after school saw this work completed.

The Environmental Council also kept the classes' contributions to Arb Day under control. Before the start of school a few of us positioned tl trees where they were to be planted and superivsed their planting.

Outdoor Education Waharau Camp - 3MT, 3HY, & 3MC The day of May 30th dawned and the spirits of the pupils of 3MT, 3HY, and 3MC were high as we set off for camp. Riding in the bus to Waharau there was singing, laughing and generally having fun.

When we arrived we were assigned to cabins with a mixture of people from each class; some we had never talked to before. Living with 60 other pupils for one week was an experience very different from seeing them just 7 hours a day at school.

During the week we had a range of activities to take part in - the hardest probably being the overnight camp an tramp. This involved and hour hike to the campsite followed by a two hour walk up the stream and back. At night we had a tent full of people talking, telling jokes and ghost stories.

Next day, a 6 hour trek over the ridge track involved a lot of sliding down mud-hills. Once back at the main camp there was a mad rush for the showers!

Other activities were; canoeing in the rain where nearly everyone fell out; sailing, which was hard at first but you got used to it; orienteering; confidence course and tidying-up-cabins-every-day! (because they got so messy) The trip back to Manurewa was very quiet, as two busloads of tired . the possums, prefects' third-formers heading home, remembered . ghost stories, food, activities, and the TRAMP - but tried to forget the runs they did every morning.

ORCHESTRA CAMP Manurewa High School orchestra had its usual three day camp at Willow Park, Howick. This year, however, there was a little more mixed talent, with the band, and top singers coming along. The main idea of this camp is to increase ability and confidence.

This year, a number of disabled children, aged from five to nine there on a separate camp. Mrs James (conductor) and Mr Thomson amazed at the way the school students treated them, giving them aft and fun, every moment possible.

On the last night, there was a camp concert, in which everyone took Mr Thomson, camp staff, and the disabled people perhaps saw as ft favourite event, Richard Tali playing his saxophone to well known nur rhymes while the children sang along.

What made camp was the way everyone co-operated and fitted in. was enjoyed by all Terese Edwards

VARIETY SHOW With Vivace touring the South Island and no prospect of a Term production we decided to organize the first all school Grand Va Concert for eight years.

From the first we were overwhelmed with volunteers and it said a lot the massive talent of the school that we were able to put together a th night show with a large number of acts being changed over for each night.

An amazing variety of activities appeared on stage; singers - solo - d - trio - groups; dancers - solos, modern dance, jazz ballet; culture gas melodrama; a never-to-be-forgotten heavy metal band; and a gr appearance by Vivace and a special vocalist in the final number.

Thanks have to go not only to the artists but especially to the s managers and Mr Vause who struggled with changes to the program and a sticky curtain, to the music department who lent us their gear w we blew up the hall speakers in rehearsal and to all the supporters came and made the show such a success. (Horror!) They are talk about making this a regular feature.

The 'OMEGA WARRIORS' Omega Warriors is the name of our Christian Fellowship group that meets every Friday lunchtime in A8. Our leader Stuart Hight has given us guidance and encouragement during the year that is greatly appreciated.

We have had several speakers telling us about their Christian experiences.

One lady in particular told us how she changed from dealing with Black Magic to becoming a Christian.

The activities we have done so far this year include; going to Youth Town for the day, making and giving out free popcorn, and inviting pupils to see videos covering topics like; 'Rock music', 'Dating' and 'How to cope with Death.' We also have plans for a bar-b-que that we hope to arrange for nearer the end of the year.

AFS WEEK The AFS Club in Manurewa High School exists as a service club for senior students. Overseas exchange students are guaranteed committee membership whilst they are staying at Manurewa High School.

The week from Friday the 12th of August to Thursday the 18th, took on an international flavour as Manurewa High School welcomed 22 short and long programme AFS students, staying with families all over Auckland.

Students from Italy, Argentina, Chile, USA, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and Malaysia were hosted by AFS club members for one week.

The weekend was spent settling in with host families. Most students came to the South Auckland Counties Chapter meeting on the Sunday night.

Thanks must go to the chapter for changing the venue of the meeting from Pukekohe to Manurewa, for the convenience of AFS students and their host families.

On Monday, many students were called upon to speak to various different classes, from all levels of the school. After a day of answering the same questions over and over again, we all went to the Intercultural Concert and Dinner that evening. The Maori Culture group welcomed the visitors to the school, and they replied with the AFS song of peace and understanding. After this, we all shared the international meal. Spaghetti Carbonara prepared a real feast next to our own ethnic 'down home' kiwi club sandwiches. A concert followed the meal. The Maori Culture group, led by Ken Milne gave an outstanding performance for our visitors - many of whom had not seen a cultural performance of such a high standard before. Then we travelled around the world as all of the students themselves performed an item. We saw 'Frere Jacques' sung in Italian, French and German (all at the same time!) performed by Italy and Switzerland; right across the board to the Spanish folk song 'La Bamba' performed by Chile and Argentina.

The Cook Island group then took the floor with a sparkling performance of their dances. They managed to get all of the sutdents, and later their hosts up onto the floor for a 'wee dance and swing of the hips'. After this our international students took the stage once again to sing the AFS song, and the evening ended with a roof-raising rendition of God Defend New Zealand from the New Zealand host students.

Tuesday was the bus trip that began with a tour of Nathan Homestead and its Rock and Mineral Museum. Then, we all piled back onto the bus and steamed off to Tangaroa College where we were welcomed with warmth and hospitality - characteristics so common to AFS. The Maori Culture, Cook Island and Samoan groups performed for us at Tangaroa, and we were given a generous lunch and finally a tour of the college.

The next and final stop was a mixed sheep and cattle farm near Clevedon.

Here we all met George the friendly sheep. Some students even climbed onto poor George! We saw spring lambs, baby calves and cows that are so common to New Zealand farming. It is safe to say that all of the students enjoyed this simple tour of South Auckland immensely.

A few of the students accompanied their hosts to the Matamata sports exchange on Wednesday, while the others experienced a 'normal day-inthe-life-of' Manurewa High School. But this was only a warming-up to the dance that was held that night. All international barriers were broken as young people all the world over enjoy a 'good of boogie down" which made the dance a massive success (I bet there's people still talking about it now!)

On Thursday morning, the final day of AFS week, the club held a morning tea for the students, AFS club members and interested staff members.

That afternoon the students were taken shopping while their hosts remained at school. By Thursday night, sadly enough, Manurewa High School AFS week had ended.

But! The week can honesty be considered a huge success. The AFS policies and ideals of peace, understanding and international harmony were genuinely and effectively promoted at our school throughout AFS week.

Thanks must go to Mrs MacDowell for her inspiration and organisation of the week and Miss Kennedy for her able assistance. Also, the hard work put into the week by our very own AFS student from USA, Verlyne Wright, must not go by unnoticed. Thank you to the families who welcomed a new friend into their home for the week, to the parents who helped with the week's events and Mrs burning who accompanied us on the bus trip.

The students themselves must be thanked for 'adjusting their surroundings' and joining us for the 'South Auckland experience: All staff must be thanked for their positive interest, patience and perseverance with AFS students in their classes. Also, for their help at the various functions throughout the week, especially the dance. Finally, thanks to anyone not previously mentioned who helped in any way to make this great week possible. We hope that this will be the first of many highly successful intercultural AFS weeks at Manurewa High School.

MAORI CULTURE GROUP 1988 has been a very busy yet memorable year for the Maori Culture Group. Behind all the "precision touch" performances there have been many practices taken in the weekends and during and after school.

We have performed creditably at the Polynesian Festival at Hato Peters College, Southmall for Maori Language Week and many other concerts.

Our many thanks go to all members of the group because without their dedication and committment we wouldn't have experienced the successes and good times we've had this year. We as a group have not only come to know our Maori culture more but have also become a close family.

There has been many a time where laughter, talk and playful teasing can be heard in the whare. This is AROHA. We hope all the members will hold onto these memories and their new knowledge of Maoritanga and in turn pass it on and encourage the new members for next year.

Our thanks go out to Keri Milne who has stuck with this "motley but beautiful bunch" through thick and thin. Without her help and dedication the group would not have accomplished the special feats that have been achieved this year. Kia Ora Ken. Kia mau ki to Maoritanga e hoa ma!

First Term Earlier in the year we performed in both assemblies, doing the same programme. The first assembly wasn't as good as the second, I think because we were just going through the actions - songs etc, instead of feeling what we were doing, no 'ihi' or 'mane', just the motions. This was like an early dress rehearsal.

That night we had our dress rehearsal and that was the best performance we'd done 'so tar', it was for the parents and friends who we wanted to show how our hard work paid off!

During the first term, the MCG started practising for the polynesian festival which was hosted by the Hato Petera College this year.

We entered the non-competitive section which is competitive in itself. The festival was held on Friday (8th of April) and Saturday (9th April) FRIDAY MORNING: Everyone wandered around and had a bit of lunch before meeting back at the bus at 12.30pm. It was good to see friends and relatives from other schools who had attended also. It was a fairly fine day, and the stages were all set up outside. Our stage was in front of their Marae. We were the fourth group performing, straight after James Cook High School. There were lots of people watching when we were ready to come on and the stage was just the right size. We started off excellent but gradually began to lose volume towards the end of our performance. However, we had strong comments which were very favourable on our behalf. After our performance we got changed and had a hui with James Cook High School. We then were told that the bus would be leaving at 3.00pm, and everyone who was catching the bus had to be there by 2.45pm. So for the remainder of the afternoon we watched other groups, saw friends and relatives and ate! Later on those who were leaving on the bus met, our tutor Miss Ken Milne, told us that the bus was delayed an hour, so we walked around again. In the end we had an enjoyable day and everyone was pleased with themselves.

Second Term: During the second term, we had a little performance for one of the cultural groups members family who had sadly lost a close relative. We all went to Tautoko her . . . and the family.

MINI MAORI CULTURE FESTIVAL: On July 22nd we held a mini-festival at our school which was organised by the sixth form Maori Language class as one of their assignments. The groups participating were Papakura High School, Rosehill College, James Cook High School and our school Manurewa High. The evening started at 6pm with the Powhir, and the first performance beginning at around 7.45pm. It was an enjoyable night and we were the last group to perform.

I think we were good but because of all our practises we had lost some of our voices.

SOUTHMALL PERFORMANCES We performed at Southmall in July to start the Maori Language week.

Every day there was a different group.

The next evening we performed at Southmall again at 7.30pm. The powhiri was done by James Cook High School. We did our new programme consisting of a joint song with James Cook. We raised over $400 by donation which we gave to Clover Park Intermediate as they were the school who travelled the furtherest during the week. We attracted quite a crowd and enjoyed ourselves once again.

Cultural Group POLYNESIAN FESTIVAL Songs and dances presented by Maori and Polynesian groups from Manurewa High School at the Polynesian Festival held at Hato Petera College received high praise from spectators.

The two day event attracted a large crowd to watch the many groups from the Auckland area perform.

Over the years the Manurewa High Maori Group has continued to develop its performance ability but their display at the festival showed the depth of awareness and skill required at this level. The group received a loud and appreciative reception.

The Cook Island and Samoan groups were also well received. The Manurewa Cook Island groups was first to perform in its section with the crowd once again showing delight at the music and action.

The three groups were smartly attired and represented their area with distinction.

Manurewa High School principal, Mr Ken Thomson, said the displays were superb and he and the associate principal, Mr Zane Kidd, were pleased to be associated with the groups.

Mr Thomson gave high praise to the tutors of the groups.

SAMOAN GROUP Talofa Lava This year has been one of laughing, joking, sharing and togetherness for our group. Everyone got along very well with each other. We had lots of ups and downs but we always had a solution, results or explanations for everything.

We started off the year with 31 students but unfortuanely 2 did not make it to the end. This year we participated in the secondary schools Polynesian Festival which was held at Hato Petera College. We were in the non competitive section. Later in the year we took part in the MHS variety concert.

We have enjoyed the items we put together and thoroughly enjoyed this year. Thanks to Mr Yardley and Miss Curran (who left during the year) for their support and we hope everything wil be as good if not better next year.

SEVENTH FORM CAMP Seventh form camp was an escape! All us seventh formers took off to Waharau for three stimulating, educating, fun-filled days. We were going to learn how to be leaders - we tried very hard.

The seventh form was able to function as one unit - we had heaps of fun doing it too. We thought as one trusted one another, listened to one another and generally worked as a team. Those three days were really valuable.

We were told the terrible saga of A, 13, C, + D by the brilliant, buoyant storyteller himself Mr Kidd, we argued profusely over the fate of the 10 little kittens in the basket under the bed (which rightly deserved to be at the bottom of the list), we paddled vigorously through the murky waters of the "puddle" near the quarry, we led the brave, blind-folded buccaneers over the obstacle course, we crept through the wilds of the dark and beastly Waharau bush to obtain scraps of minute material and had an excellent time doing so.

Next year we'll all be gone and there will be no more camps - so 6th form make the most of your year - do heaps, have fun r it'll all be gone before you know it.

P.T.A At the beginning of the year our president Mr A West retired after 18 years on ther PTA and Mrs J May was elected to succeed him. We also welcomed a large number of new parents to the committee.

We decided this year to spend some of the money we had collected over the past few years and accordingly asked the Principal for a list of items which the school felt it needed.

It says a lot about the cost of school education and the initial need for parent support, that the cost of materials the school would like to have came to over $50,000. Lively debate ensued at to where we should put our $4000, and in the process we learnt a lot about the financial complexities of a school of the size of Manurewa High.

The highlight of the year has to be the annual fashion parade - a wonderful event in which parents, staff and pupils combine their talents and which has now become virtually a professional production. This year was even better than last year's and our thanks go to Debbie Dorday and Yvonne Van Twiver who did so much to put the show together.

Members have been everywhere this year; in the canteen, in the uniform shop, at all the school functions in a supporting role and in and out of school making suggestions, being consulted and fulfilling an invaluable role as liaison between the school authorities and the parent body. It has been interesting and a great deal of fun.

Our fondest hope is that any parent reading this article will come and join us in 1988.

WALKATHON The school's major fundraising effort was again this year a Walkathon.

It is a great pity that valuable school time has to be taken up in raising money in this way but over the years many of the school facilities - the gym, extensions, outdoor education, the computer room, the school bus, the canteen, the Woray books, the biology area have benefited in this way. And once again the vast majority of pupils pitched in to make the afternoon a great success.

Once again Mr West organized a beautiful day - sunny, but not too hot and with a slight, cooling breeze. Mr Craig and Mr Bargh proved the superiority of the staff by being the fastest home and there were lots of red faces (for alf sorts of reasons) when a third former was the first pupil round.

The rest of us who performed a quiet afternoon's ramble and enjoyed the view, the smiles of passing pedestrians and the encouragement of the teachers cunningly spaced out - if that is the correct term - to keep us on the straight and narrow.

All in all a pleasant, healthful and profitable afternoon in which we made $7,500 which goes this year to building up funds for a foundation towards the schools further needs.

YOUNG ENTERPRISE Young Enterprise is formed every year by a group of enthusiastic sixth form business studies students. This year the students marketed successfully under the name of Classy Cadeous.

During this year we undertook many ventures including mothers' day gift baskets in the first term, mushrooms in the second term finishing off with sunglasses and sunglass cases in the third term. All were extremely successful. Market surveys assisted Classy Cadeous in making key decisions on whether to follow up with product lines or abandon them.

The Board of Directors were: Managing Director, Karyn Thomson; Assistant Managing Director, Craig Pope; Secretary, Karen Anelay; Marketing Manager, Andrew Cochrane; Finance Manager, Grant Le Quesne; Production Manager, Jonathon Hall; Personnel Manager, Paulette Winson; Advertising Manager, Mark Roach.

In addition, Young Enterprise had the valued assistance of Elizabeth Sutton, Dorothy Mustor, Juanita Hieatt, Deborah Deesborough, Jerry Roiall and Fleur Stavely.

BILLY LIAR A play that was not to be missed, produced entirely by the sixth form drama class of 15 keen students under the co-ordination and guidance of Mrs Oates.

The play was about a young adult, Billy who was played well by Nick May, a regular sight on stage in last productions, and his struggle to survive in life. He copes with this by going into his own dream-world and telling lies about ridiculous things that are so obvious. Hence the name Billy Liar.

The cast consisted of only 8 students who put together a well staged comedy with everything revolving around Billy who gets engaged to three ladies, who are all quite different in attitude. Barbara is a person who wants to get married and have security. To have little Barbaras and Billys roaming around the garden. While Rita is more worried about getting the engagement ring back off Billy who gave it to Barbara. Liz is a compromise between the others and is not fooled by Billy's lies. Liz is the one Billy has true feelings for but cannot drop out of his cocoon in life to follow her.

On behalf of the sixth form drama class I would like to thank Mr Vause and Mrs Oates, without their devotion and commitment this play could not have been staged. Also I would like to pay my thanks to the make-up, lighting and costume people with the behind the scenes work.

PREFECTS The prefects this year have been a very strong group with 40 in total chosen from a vast list of hopeful candidates.

The caretaker strike at the commencement of the year gave last year sixth form prefects the opportunity to 'excel' in their 'toilet watching' - "I must say the job went pretty well and tested the spartan endurance of those highly skilled people involved."

The leadership conference held in Manukau Council City Building was a very valuable lesson to all. The conference bought us closer together so we could work as a group - we were given very helpful hints from Mr Richards, Principal of Papatoetoe High School (remember the Leslord theory). Mrs Dixon and Mr Kidd worked both on our intellect and logic and we were stimulated and enthused into action by the persuasiveness from a certain majestic speaker.

Third form camps have been very popular among the prefects this year and the prefects camp itself was also another highlight.

Duties have been 'faithfully carried out (thank-you Nick May) and the introduction in third term of the detention duties after school has kept the prefects on their toes.

Games against the staff have been less frequent this year, but those that were held were won enthusiatically by the strength, courage, determinatoin and go of the t-OOPPS! prefects.

I would like to say on behalf of Umesh and myself thanks heaps to all you guys for your co-operation and support - we've had fun this year!

HEAD PREFECTS Furthering the high reputation of the school was the object of the head prefects for 1988 at Manurewa High School.

Mei-Lin Hansen and Umesh Patel were made head prefects with Katherine Stirling and Jeremy Bradshaw as deupty head prefects. The four are in the seventh form and intend sitting the university bursary examination at the end of the year. Umesh also intends to sit the demanding scholarship examination.

The four said they favoured the philosophy of Manurewa High School which was based on a firm but fair discipline system, to achieve academic goals and to take an activer -part in sport and cultural activities, They are supported by a strong and positive team of prefects and all are looking forward to the challenge in their new leadership roles.

VIVACE TOUR THURSDAY, 11th September = 34 students and 3 teachers gathered at the airport. Some were excited, others scared but most were just plain looney as we boarded the plane. Memories of the flight were our applause at the conclusion of the safety demonstration, breakfast and Lawrence serving lollies. Safe arrival in Christchurch on their coldest day, 6°. Lunch at a supermarket before travelling to Shirley Boys'. Performed or should I say practised before our billets. So much for good looking senior guys as billets most of us had shrimpy 3rd formers!

FRIDAY, 12th = Struggled out of bed to get to school by 8, the stories of the 1st night can't be described. Our first performance for the day was at Avonside Girls' - stunning performance, fantastic audience gave us a Maori welcome (the girls just wanted to kiss all our guys) and morning tea afterwards. Lunch in the square after climbing the Cathedral tower naturally we sang whilst stumbling down the 133 stairs. Afternoon performance at Christchurch Boys, we did a great job considering the boys were § —MS to perform to. Evening went to the movies - 'Like Father Like Son' SATURDAY, 13th = -4° when we awoke, squashed everything back into our suitcases , bid goodbye to our billets and headed for Queenstown.

Tony (our bus driver) was such a neat relaxed guy, the bus travel became easy, we'd sing, play games, sleep and at times the bank of St James would open. Stopped at Cromwell for lunch and at Twizel to see a video.

Arrived at Queenstown after 8 hours of travelling. Out for tea then danced on the street outside a pub before walking back to the school and the music room where we would spend three nights on the floor. Generally mucked around before bed. It's unbelievable the noise we make in our sleep - some dutch, some revealing talk and incredible snoring!

SUNDAY, 14th = Skiing up the Remarkables - that's if you can call our sliding skiing. Everyone had a go but some were more successful than others. Back to the school to attempt to cook dinner in our groups - we didn't eat well so it was out shopping to spend more money and indulge in junk food.

MONDAY, 15th = Performance to every school pupil in all of Queenstown, then Jam session with their singers and musicians. In the afternoon we risked the gondolas and the Shotover jet, both were RAD!! In the evening another disastrous meal and out shopping again. By this time some of us were getting low on money.

TUESDAY, 16th = Nothing much to say about this day, had a great time travelling to Dunedin. Ate more rubbish for lunch , bound to be putting on weight. Met billets.

WEDNESDAY, 17th — Worked ourselves silly because of Logan Park's excellent reputation but our performance was the best yet. After lunch we saw their 7th form drama class play. In the afternoon went shopping again (I'm broke) I don't know if all the guys enjoyed the shopping but the girls sure did. It snowed lightly. Went to the movies.

THURSDAY , 18th = Said goodbye to billets, "Nice knowing you have a good life." Visited Larnachs Castle, extremely beautiful. Then on to the albatross colony and the diappearing gun. It was muddy and cold and heaps of people tell over in the mud HA! HA! Arrived in Oamaru at Waitaki Girls' High. In the evening saw their school plays.

FRIDAY, 19th = Did more shopping then our last performance at Waitaki Girls'. Well, what a choice way to end, the girls danced and gave us a standing ovation at the end. Went to the Moeraki Boulders, crazy antics on the beach. Getting sick of posing for photos.

SATURDAY, 20th = Travelled to Christchurch, stopped at Timaru for lunch and then at Tumuka to buy pottery. Did some last minute shopping in New Brighton. Settled into our motel units. Got dressed up and had our last supper. Presented the teachers with gifts. Out ice skating and then to Macdonalds. No need to mention the last night.

SUNDAY, 21st = Went swimming at Hamner Springs then back to change and leave. The flight back was a sad one, all the hard work for the year was over and we'd had a RAD time. All in all it was a fantastic experience.

Parliament Week For Jane Little

Photographic Achievement Jane Little of Manurewa High School was one of six students from throughout the country to be selected for a parliamentary photographic project.

The 17-year-old seventh former is a keen photographer and was pleased to have the chance to show her artistic talent.

Jane's task dealt with the interior of Parliament and in particualr the people who receive any visitors into the building.

Birnie Duthie, education officer in art with the Department of Education, said Jane may be given access to some parts of the building usually closed to public view.

The photographs taken by the students were displayed in the Beehive.

VISUAL RESOURCE ROOM 1988 1988 has brought a welcome and long-awaited change for the students in the visual resource room at Manurewa High. Early in the year, major renovations created individual work areas which incorporate storage space, shelving, power points and comfortable seating. An adjoining room contains a large quantity of electronic and computer equipment shared by the students. An additional room was used for book storage, student tests, and provides privacy for both staff and student meetings.

The introduction of Key Notes, a portable information handling wordprocessor and computer access device that talks to its user, has been extremely successful. The students find them convenient and timesaving, and quieter than the Braille machines. They are sure other students appreciate that too, and hope that eventually there can be one for each senior pupil.

An IBM compatable computer acquired in late 1987 has proved popular with the students. It has improved and expanded the facilities originally provided by the Apple 2E by enabling word and data processing from computer specialists within Manurewa High the Department of Education and the Foundation for the Blind has been invaluable.

What It Is Like To Be Blind Being blind simply means to me, that I'm just missing out on seeing things visually. Since I don't remember what it was like to see images, most of the time it doesn't worry me to know what I'm missing out on.

I like to be treated as an average fully sighted person, except when it comes to things I can't do because of my disability reason. Diagrams even in brail form can be hard to identify, and sometimes I have to be told what they are.

I have most of the time liked most of my teachers. In the past two years I have become much more aware and conscious of how teachers treat me and teach the class. I have never had a teacher who has treated me differently to a normal student.

When walking down the street, the average passer-by never says a word. Other members of the public, even people working, can be quite helpful when asking for directions or help.

Homai Students Enjoy Sporting Successes in Darwin Two of our Homai students, Kelly Johnson (5BU) and Tet Peng (4H1), were selected to go to Darwin as part of a team representing New Zealand at the Pan-Pacific Student Games for the Visually Impaired in August of this year. After selection, the seven-strong team were given an intensive training programme under the guidance of specialists for their various events. They trained three' nights a week and every weekend for two months and their efforts were rewarded as they both returned with several medals.

Kelly won three gold medals, four silver and one bronze in athletics and swimming events. Tets achievements were five gold medals and one silver also in athletics and swimming.

Both Kelly and Tet were billeted with local families in Darwin and managed to find a little time to enjoy a few of the local sights. Tet went on a boat trip, Kelly visited a crocodile farm where she held a baby croc and a snake and they both visitied the Darwin Zoo as well as doing the shops.

It was great experience for these students, one they will never forget 37 Perhaps in the future with continued application to training they may get a chance to compete again.

UNDER 17 RUGBY TEAM Coach: Mr MacLeod Captain: Simon McKearney It's 20 minutes into the game. It's been a hard tussle and no points have been scored. We have a scrum on the Wesley College 22. Number 8 Simon McKearney runs from the back of the scrum, halfback Martin Monk carries it on, a maul, then flanker Gary Payne is over for the first competition try of the season. Fullback Robbie Turner converts. We win the game 16-6.

Five months later we are playing our final game It's a home game against Waiuku College. The ball comes out the backline to Craig Peebles at centre. He dummies, makes a break, runs hard and scores the last try of the season. We win 32-0. That night we head out to Parakai hot pools for a barbecue. It's been an enjoyable and successful season. We played 16 games, won 13, drew 1, lost 2. Our thanks to Mr McLeod for his coaching and to all the parents who helped with transport.

2nd XV RUGBY Although the 2nd XV were unsuccessful in most of their games they did show vast improvement throughout the season and many of their games were bravely fought particularly in the second round when they were more fairly matched with their opponents. Despite a rapidly declining morale due to some heavy defeats they continued to appear on Saturdays and perform creditably on most occasions. Particular individuals that stood out included Lawrence Lenati who ran straight and hard, Makaea Amani who worked hard in the tight, Leslie Little and Ian Joyce whose front row strength held the scrum together, Richard Waddel who always played a versatile game and Darren Wills who made many surprisingly clever busts up the middle. Andrew Philp produced some goodkicking.

Rugby 1st XV : THE PLAYERS Dallas Maihi Captain, talented, experienced, ability to lead from the front especially in pressure games. An inspiration to others, one of the strongest props in the NZ secondary schools rugby. His talent will be seen in the future.

Salu Palelei Vice Captain for most of the season, moved from second five to first and helped transform the team, a brilliant player on the burst and ruined the defence repeatedly by hard running and an ability to find the gap. A bright rugby future.

Gavin Misiepo Front row, tireless, hard grafter of a prop and got better every game.

David Alaluia Front row, had a marvellous season. Tough, clever with great skills. His hooking and line out throwing were technically excellent.

Paul Timu Front row. Will get more games next season. Showed what he could do with some very sound displays.

Mark Cooksley Lock, part of a solid unit who gained in confidence all season and had the great thrill of representing the country. Dominated lineouts and invaluable in crunch games.

Matthew Filipo. Lock. Got better with every game, very impressive in the hard games in the ASB championship series. A real strength for next season.

Craig Yakas Loose forward. One of the best in the country (should have gone to Australia but was ill). Inspiring player with a crunch run or a clearing line kick or a well taken penalty. A great future.

Scott Pearson Loose forward. Tough, tireless and his value to the team cannot be overstated. A great season and his presence in the team was a must every game.

Karl Todd Loose forward. Has all the attributes, intelligent, tough, fast and ruthless. Has a marvellous future.

Robert loseta.Loose forward. Played whenever called on. A great team man. With plenty of thinking about the game will be a real asset next year.

Cedric Naera. Half back. Epitome of guts and determination. His pass improved with his confidence and intelligent reading of the game was invaluable. Will look back with pride on this season.

Phillip Smith Back. Cemented his place more firmly with every game.

Developed confidence, a hard runner, tackled well and had a good season.

Peter Perene Moved from the forwards to the backs during the season.

Proved invaluable to the team.

Robert Ah Chong. Back. Fast, clever and ran the wingers in well. Next season will be a back line pivot.

Tony Henry Back. Great speed getting some great tries against Kaitaia and James Cook. A real find. Like Robert Ah Chong, has potentially all the attributes.

Chris lkitule Back. A must in the back line. Showed pace and ability to keep running. A major contribution to the team and will be a king pin next year.

Dion Ratu Back. The real speedster of the team. A splendid sight to see when he had room to move. Will turn into a classy winger next season as he takes this year's experience and hardens his attitude.

Paul Candy. Back. A young winger with a big future, showed signs of distinct promise. Unfortunately injured during the season.

Kahu Simmonds and David McKearney proved to be great team men and when they played they went well. Their turn will come next year.

Their dedication and loyalty was an example to all. The full back for the early part of the season was Tikiroa Woonten and he was starting to go well before he left school. Mark Cassidy took his place. Young and confident, did an admirable job. Great to see his high ball takes in the Hughes and Cosser match.

1st XV RUGBY COUNTIES CHAMPIONS The 1988 season proved to be the most successful in the history of M'anurewa High School 1st XV rugby with the team winning for the first time the Counties Secondary School championships.

The team played very well in the inaugural ASB Champion of Champions tournament at which the top secondary school teams of Counties (Manurewa), Auckland (Kelston Boys' High), North Harbour (Westlake Boys' High) and North Auckland (Kaitaia College) took part. There was also the winning of the Hughes and Cosser Cup for the first time in six years against James Cook High School.

Nine players made various representative teams and this large pool of experience served the team well this year as it will next year and beyond.

Dallas Maihi, Craig Yakas, Scott Pearson, Salu Palelei and Chris Ikitule got in the Counties Secondary Schools team which finished third in their Northern Regions tournament at Dargaville.

Dion Ratu, Scott Pearson, Dallas Maihi and Craig Yakas played for the Counties under 18 team which was placed first in the northern region tournament held in West Auckland.

Playing for the Counties under 16 team who were first equal in their tournament at Cambridge were Paul Timu and Karl Todd who captained the team.

Dallas Maihi, Craig Yakas and Mark Cooksley represented Northern Region in the regional tournament held in Christchurch.

Two players burst into national prominence from the Manurewa team and were a source of pride to all. Mark Cooksley was selected to play for the NZ Secondary Schools in all three tests against England, Scotland and Australia. The North Island under 16 team which defeated the South Island included the Counties captain and MHS player, Karl Todd.

With this success was the high morale and the superb team spirit. Full credit for this must go to the senior players who brought the new players into the team and the marvellous, consistent support given by a large contingent of parents and supporters.

To start the season Manurewa High hosted a Quadrangular tournament with a cup being sponsored by Rainbow's End. Westlake won the cup but ,Macleans, Manurewa and Rodney all played well.

The Counties competition began two weeks later and the team defeated Wesley College 19-18 at Pukekohe Stadium but hard lessons were learnt and absorbed with the defeat by Pukekohe and James Cook. Papakura, Rosehill and St Stephens were defeated and the team geared itself for the final against Wesley with Manurewa running out a 28-12 victory. A great season for a great Manurewa High School team.

Coach Byron Bentley Comments It was a wonderful season and I would like to thank the parents for their unstinting support, a sentiment echoed by the whole team. One person must be mentioned in particular and that is Mrs Shirley Maihi. Her hard work and inspiring encouragement was one of the keys to the success.

The support of the school was excellent and the encouragement and interest shown by fellow coaches and staff members was a real boost.

Above all, I would like to thank Dallas, Salu, Craig, Scott and Cedric and the entire team for their unwavering support, their great good humour and the determination to succeed.

The pride and loyalty displayed and the results achieved were an object lesson of what pupils at MHS can do when they work together and aspire 43 to the heights.

Seventeen year old Mark Cooksley of Manurewa High School was selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools rugby team which toured Australia.

The six foot seven lock said he was delighted to be selected for the team following trials. Their first test was against Scotland at Eden Park on 14 August. In Australia they played several games before meeting England and Australia in tests.

MHS 1st XV: Counties Competition Winners

Mark said he enjoyed the game and would eventually like to make All Black level. He and his team mates Dallas Maihi and Craig Yakas attended trials held in Hamilton for selection in the Northern squad before Mark and Craig took part in the New Zealand trials.

This is Mark's second season playing rugby.

TOP SPORTS PEOPLE Seventeen students at Manurewa High School reached either regional, national or international level in a variety of sports while three past pupils were selected for the Seoul Olympic games.

Fourth former Brent Petrie was placed 4th in the double mini trampoline world championship event held in Texas while Adele Inston proved her high standard at the national roller skating championships held in Rotorua by winning the figure section and coming second in free skating in the pre-intermediate ladies section.

Philip Duncan has been selected for the under 16 soccer tea. He has already played in one tournament and hopes to be selected again to play in Australia in January. He is a mid field striker.

In gymnastics, Brett Mills was selected for the New Zealand team to tour Japan in August and he hopes to be selected for the 1990 Commonwealth games and Cory Scott has been selected as a member of the New Zealand under 17 team.

Rachel Wheeler and Peggy Noovao were selected for the under 18 netball training squad. Their coach, Mrs Shodland, said the girls had great potential and they would benefit greatly from the coaching school.

In rugby league, Jason Savage, Darryl Clarkson and Troy Lovett were selected for the New Zealand coaching squad. Jason and Darryl were members of the New Zealand schoolboy under 15 kiwi team.

Jason Sexton was runner up in the South Island squash championships and in the Auckland under 15 championships. He has been selected in the squad preparing for the world squash championships. He has been selected in the squad preparing for the world squash championships to be held in East Germany in 1990. Judith Hill is a member of the New Zealand junior squad of six. Four will be chosen in 1989 for the World championships.

In ten-pin bowling Julie Waterworth was 1st in the A grade 'all events' championships held in New South Wales. She won th eA grade doubles with past pupil Donna Jensen.

Matthew Filipo has proved his ability in waterpolo. He was a member of the under 18 Auckland team that won a gold medal at the national tournament and he was picked in the tournament team. He is vice captain of the New Zealand under 17 team to tour Hawaii in August and he will play in the secondary schools team to play Australia in July. He will also play in the national under 19 Junior men's team to play California in August.

Manurewa High School intermediate boys showed strength at the Manukau Secondary school athletics.

The event was postponed for several days because of Cyclone Bola but finally the athletes met at Massey Park, Papakura, in the annual clash.

Paul Candy was first in the intermediate boys 200 metres and he also featured with Tony Henry, Lance Muaiava and Tony Peautagitama to win the 4 x 100 metres relay for intermediate boys.

The following Manurewa High athletes gained second placings - Philip Funaki, junior boys shot put; John Collins, junior boys discus; Chris lkitu le, senior boys 100 metres hurdles; Paul Candy, intermediate boys 100 metres) Rachel Wheeler, senior girls 100 metres and Dion Ratu, senior boys 100 metres.

The following gained third placings - Craig Yakas, senior boys javelin; Martin Monk, intermediate boys 800 metres; Allan Warngam, junior boys 400 metres; Tracey Fisher, intermediate girls 1500 metres and 1000 metres; Jeremy Field, junior boys 3000 metres; Paul Candy, intermediate boys 100 metre hurdles; Nathan Davis, senior boys 3000 metres; Lae Amosa, junior girls shot put; Tony Henry, junior boys 200 metres; Mark Cooksley, senior boys shot put; Dion Ratu, Chris Ikitule, Peter Lowe and Darren Wills, senior boys 4 x 100 metres relay.

Head of sport and sports co-ordinator at Manurewa High, Terry O'Dea, said he was pleased with the performance of the athletes.

"It gave us the chance to identify potential", he said.

TIMARU CROSS COUNTRY On the 18 June 1988, 15 Manurewa High School students wearily arrived at the Auckland airport at 8.30am. Dressed in running shoes and track pants we were about to depart to Timaru to compete in the challenging event of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. This event draws schools from all over New Zealand and this year 132 schools were entered.

As the junior boys got ready for the 4000m, they found it difficult to get warm as the temperature was below average. There was a line-up of 257 boys from all over New Zealand when the race started, they were off sprinting, jostling and elbowing their way to get a decent position. The boys ran well all the way, with Martin Monk first home for Manurewa, completing the course in an excellent time of 14.25 minutes in 87th place. He was followed in by Rueban Overall at 101st place with a time of 14.37 minutes, and Simon McKearney at 111th place, third for Manurewa. Coming home in 4th was Jeremy Field.

Results after that were as follows; Geoffrey Callender 202nd place 16.01 minutes; Andrew Smith, 214th place - 16.1 minutes; Campbell Fraser 223rd place - 16.23 minutes.

The girls found it just as hard warming up for the 3km run. At the line-up there were 235 starters. The girls ran well despite the weather with Tracey Fisher first home for Manurewa, with a placing of 13th and a time of 12.10 minutes. Followed in by Raewyn Fox achieving her goal and a pleasing time of 14.11 minutes at 145th place. Following Raewyn was Angela Williams at 177th place. They all came one after another after that, 178th Kyran Robinson, 179th Cherie May, 180th Kim Douglas. Last of all with a good performance was Nicola Hall at 202nd place.

Everyone performed well with a combination of team spirit and good sportsmanship.

If it wasn't for Mr O'Dea's time, effort and organisation we wouldn't have got down to Timaru. Without Mr Craig's professional coaching advice and optimistic attitude we wouldn't have performed as well. Mrs Fox kindly volunteered to help us along, so we would have dry clothes after the run. So a great big thanks to everyone. We couldn't have done without you. And to the team who worked so hard at getting sponsors for our 10km run, to pay for our fare, I'm sure you enjoyed yourself. All our fund raising paid off with the boys achieving 11th team and the aids achieving 10th team place. Wasn't that well worth it!

Cycling

New Zealand Secondary Schools Cycling Championships Katherine Stirling, Georgina Hooper, Michelle Powell, Lydia Winkle and myself form the 1988 M.H.S. Girls Cycling Team which competed at this event, held in Levin on August 20.

Although new to the sport, our team performance on the Auckland waterfront circuit (seven o'clock races on Sunday mornings .. ) gained us an invitation to the championships, Nissan N.Z. Ltd and Gilberd Hadfield Ltd had enough confidence in the team to sponsor us, for which we and our pockets were grateful.

Fears of overpacking were realised after spending a first night in a caravan which was forced to hold five, plus food stores and wardrobe.

After a training ride in crisp, sunny weather the next morning our limbs had stretched out but we were still pleased when the adult company decided to up-camp and move to more spacious cabins in Otaki.

Unfortunately, that "crisp, sunny" weather was shortlived and race day offered wind and rain - and cold! Our total effort earned us sixth place out of the eleven girls teams, and our numb bodies forgave us. Linwood High School from Christchurch won the girl's event against stro competition from all over New Zealand.

We must admit that the trip seemed like a holiday with a tough "thrown in", thanks to Mr and Mrs Winkle and Mr Clarke, who toget competently managed the team during the trip. Mr Winkie dese praise for his coaching which brought us up to such a high level. also appreciate the assistance of Mr Hooper, and Mr Yardley determination in starting and supporting the team throughout the year

BOYS' CYCLING After a slow beginning the boys' cycling team competed on the waterfront against many other Auckland schools on Sunday mornings in the winter months. The team was based around Stephen Flames, Stephen Dennis, Tim Ragg, Paul Brown. Thanks to the other riders who helped out from time to time. All remember the crash but the team got back going again much to their credit. Stephen James raced well at the NZ secondary schools champs in Levin and then later in the year with an Auckland squad near Dunedin. The future looks particularly bright for him.

TABLE TENNIS This season saw the teams compete in the Auckland secondary schools knockout tournament with a tine second placing against formidable opposition.

This set our teams into gear for the qualifying rounds of the Commercial Union secondary schools tournament which is narrowed down to six finalists out of 120 entries. Manurewa qualified as the representative of Counties, East Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Hamilton.

The top team travelled to Wellington courtesy of Commercial Union and competed over the weekend of 23-25 September. Due to difficult competition and players not reaching their full potential, Manurewa finished a disappointing 5th.

1988 saw an experiment with a lunchtime table tennis club and in 1989 we hope to gain from our successes.

TENNIS Seniors: Both the boys' and girls' teams were outmatched in their grades but always performed to the best of their ability. Most of the junior girls had not played much tennis before and despite regular losses managed to keep going to the end. Largely due to the effort of Rachel Wheeler. Senior boys showed improvement, particularly Chris Steptoe and Greg McMahon.

Intermediate: The success of both boys' and girls' teams fluctuated. On occasions the girls were let down by unreliable team members and performed well considering such disadvantages. Kim Blackman and Joanne Baxter played well taking a doubles title in the Manukau Secondary Schools Tournament. Boys that showed promise were Simon McKearney, Din Tran and Jamie Johnson.

Junior: The junior boys performed the best of all our teams gaining 36 of a total of 50 for their first round effort. Capably led by Jamie Bentley they managed to win 3 of their five first round matches. To stand out were Steven Brindle, David Wallace, Miti Noovao and Jamie Bentley. Players like Brent Petrie show promise.

Netball MATAMATA SPORTS EXCHANGE This year MHS teams attended Matamata College on the 17th August, for our annual sports exchange. After minor transportation difficulties (try not enough!) we steamed off to Matamata. The journey, though long, was worth it once we arrived.

The school has participated in this rural - urban exchange with Matamata College for the past three years. Each school never fails to greet the other with familiar hospitality, and the games played are friendly, yet competitive.

The open netball team started off the year quite well. Out coach was Shortland, who was very good at making us work as a team. Well tried to ... anyway, thanks very much Mrs Shortland, we had an enjoy season, and we hope to see you next year.

Results were fairly evenly pitched, unfortunately Matamata College could not field a girls' soccer team and their First XI also weren't able to play.

Hockey FIRST XI HOCKEY The year started with a bang. The annual round robin tournament held at Rosehill College was convincingly won by our first eleven boys' hockey team. The fifteen minute games were played in quick succession but overall fitness skill and team spirit prevailed with total victory.

The hockey season, for the team, was hindered by injury of key players.

Rajeh Dayha was absent most of the season with a chronic lumbar spine injury which cut his season short.

Two of the highlights of the season were the victories over rival high school, James Cook. The first of which MHS first XI came back from 2-0 down to score 3 goals in the final quarter of an hour. The second, being not so dose, was a 5-1 victory for MHS.

7 ASIDE HOCKEY MHS ventured into a new field of the sport of hockey at the start of t year. The Southern District Hockey Association invited our first XI to pl in a seven aside tournament on the astro turf in Papatoetoe.

This resulted in some exciting top line hockey with our team making permanent imprint on the Auckland Secondary Schools.

Tough Pukekohe, the competition leaders, contributed to the most exciting game of the season. Superb defence by Mathew Clarke, Brad McKenzie Our first game 0-0 against Otahuhu resulted in one of the biggest ups( and goal keeper, Peter Marshall kept the score to 0-0 with five minutes of the season. Our team had made a good start by drawing with tl to go. Then it happened during a heated confrontation the ball lodged expected competition finalists. Another big game was against Kip itself under the goal keeper. The ever-alert, all seeing Mr Bargh (also College 3-1 at half time we thought we had it sewn up but determini referee) noticed this infringement and awarded a penalty stroke attack and stringent defence turned a victory into a loss for our team; If (equivalent to a direct penalty in soccer). The final score being 1-0 to final score being 5-4 to Kings.

Other scores this year were; Our thanks to Mr Clarke who supported us through the middle of the Manurewa 15 v. Mangere 0 season showing our team effective skills and tactics.

Manurewa 8 v. Papatoetoe 0 Our two exchanges against Papatoetoe and Matamata were both successes with a 4-0 win over Papatoetoe and a 4-4 draw with Matamata.

Both of which were games played in the best of spirits with sportsmanship coming to the foreground in all tense circumstances.

GIRLS' HOCKEY SECOND ELEVEN We started the season in high spirits, winning the first five consecutive games. It was the double layered chocolate cakes, awarded to us after each win by our coach, Miss McLean, that kept us going.

Our goal-keeper, Petrina Riley, saved us from many defeats with her great dives and beautiful defense of penalty strokes. The team captain, Suzanne Agnew kept everyone in line throughout the season and was an asset to the team. With tough work-outs at practice, the team developed skill and technique, especially the girls who were having their first season. Everyone improved their game throughout the season which culminated in our defeating Matamata 2-0. In addition, there was an excellent team spirit resulting in a satisfying feeling for all.

FOURTH FORM TEAM: 7 o'clock on a cold Tuesday morning. The sun had barely risen. The best and most dedicated players of the fourth form team turned up to practice. (Unfortunately we can't tell you more because we weren't there!)

In the games, our goalie was brilliant, hardly letting a goal through all season. This was partly because the ball did not spend much time in our half of the field thanks to the great work of the other team members.

Our centre half, Angela Williams, was always there when we needed her and the forward line scored many times.

Our coach presented a business-like picture. Picture her in blue wellies, black track-suit pants and that striking yellow sweat shirt ready to spur us into action. Thank you Miss Hayward. We all had a very enjoyable season and can't wait to get back on the field again.

FIRST XI GIRLS' HOCKEY

The 1988 season got off to a good start under Mrs Weatherly's strict managerial thumb. The coach was Miss Plummer from Weymouth Intermediate and the team was almost completely revamped after the mass exodus of most of the former team at the end of 1987. This new team, an enthusiastic group of girls ranging from 4th to 7th form level, showed immense raw talent and had the potential to form a superb team.

The competition season commenced with a full attendance at Monday afternoon practices. There was more reluctance to turn up regularly on Friday mornings 7.30am. Despite the tough opposition that the team faced, and the fact that we never won a game, spirits never lowered.

(The highlight of the season was the 0 - 0 draw versus Matamata at the season's end.) Even the disruption caused when all our gear was stolen failed to upset the girls.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable season for all involved. The standard of play was high and could perhaps have lead to victories if stamina and fitness had equalled on-field skills and dedication. Thank you to all players of the 1988 1st XI for your friendly enthusiasm, team spirit, encouragement and dedication. A special thanks to the vice-captain, Sally Sharp whose optimism and skill on the field made it a very enjoyable season for me. Thanks also to the coach and manager. I wish you well for next season.

One could say that it wasn't the best season for the first XI girls hockey team. However, this year the team sported a 'closer-knit' attitude and played a more 'together' game. We all had no end of enthusiasm but unfortunately didn't manage to transfer to the score board.

This was not, however, a situation of despair. We faced fierce competition, although enrolled in the Reserve grade. The team also improved a great deal as the season progressed. The highlight of the season would have to be the Matamata College trip in which we barely drew nil-all in a very close and demanding game. Better luck next time.

We must all offer our immense and sincere thanks to Miss Plumber who gave up her own valuable time to come into the school and offer us her knowledge and expertise of hockey. If only we could play like her!

Also, the team would like to thank team captain Pickles for her patience, leadership, good humour and excellent goal play this season. Also thanks to vice captain Sally Sharp who never failed to play well and encourage other team members, Of course, thanks to Mrs Weatherly for her co-ordination of Girls Hockey this year and all other parents and supporters we saw on the sideline on Saturday mornings.

Hopefully next year our skill and knowledge of hockey will be further developed. We all look forward to future successes.
