principal's message...

This year. at Manurewa High School, roll numbers have exceeded 1500.

This continued growth in roll numbers has put pressure on existing facilities, but, nevertheless, with Board planning the school has been able to provide extra facilities, to cater for the demand, Additions this year have included the completion of the second gymnsaium and a large Cebus teaching block.

Extra facilities planned for the very near future include major extensions to the existing library, alterations to the pavilion to include a large conference/senior common room and extra changing facilities, a drama storage area at the rear of the hall and a video suite to include facilities for filming, viewing and discussion.

The existing facilities and those planned, give an indication of the increasing complexity and breadth of the curriculum we now offer to the pupils of our school. The introduction of many new subjects over the past few years, such as Computer Studies, Business Studies, Drama, Photography, Horticulture and Outdoor Education to name but a few, are an example of this diversification within the school. Additional subjects continue to be added and next year it is planned to introduce Film Studies at Sixth Form Level.

The wider community has had an opportunity this year to involve itself in two major reviews of curriculum and assessment in New Zealand education, The outcome of this review will determine the shape of education for years to come and I thank the parents of our community for their valuable input into this area.

Our achievements in all aspects of school life have continued to be excellent.

Academically, culturally and in the sporting area, activities within the school have given our pupils enriching experiences which will assist them in acquiring high standards of social behaviour and the development of positive attitudes.

I thank staff, so ably led by the Associate Prinicpal, Mr Kidd, and all agencies such as the Board of Governors and Parent/Teacher Association that have supported the school all year. The staff effort has been a particularly valuable one, as it is they who continue to help establish the standards and goals for the pupils they teach. Their co-operation has made it possible, for instance, to implement week-long Third Form Outdoor Education Camps at Waharau. Their efforts, both in and out of the classroom, are certainly appreciated.

I believe that we are providing the type of education that our parents desire for their children and that we must retain what has proven to be a successful formula in education and one which provides a measure of security and stability for our pupils. To those pupils leaving. I thank them for their contribution while they were with us and wish them every success in the future.

NO LUCK He walks from the dressing room, Out onto the pitch In front of thousands of excited roaring people, Nerves cause him to tremble, Like pulsating jelly.

He takes his mark, Then stands, glaring down the pitch, To see the bowler turn, and start his run up, To fire another of his rocketing balls.

Eyes glued on the bowler, he dare not blink, Because in that time the ball could have been and gone.

The bowler releases the ball, And sees the batter, play miss and get bowled.

Too ashamed to look up, He starts the long walk back to the dressing room, Bat in one hand, gloves in the other, With a big fat duck!

The howling wind outside and a sudden bang, that sounded suspiciously like a gun shot, awakened her, Terrified of what was downstairs, her first notion was to hide under the covers and wait, but eventually curiosity overtook any other thought in her mind.

As she opened the door it went squeak, it was as if there was a microphone next to her, broadcasting her every move. Stealthily she crept down the stairs, a light was shinng in the family room. Swallowing hard she neared the door. The only sound in hearing was the pounding of her heart, as she turned the knob. After what seemed like a century the door was open and she was inside. The light flickered and left her in total darkness, the curtains flapped; her eyes widened; as she peered into the dark, a sharp crack rang out, she staggered across the floor then collapsed to die.

STAFF NOTES At the end of last year a number of staff left us. Mrs Sutherland, Art; Mrs McIntyre, Art; Mrs Slaughter, Mathematics; Mrs Girdhar, Home Economics; Mrs Brennan, Commercial; Miss Ford, Commercial (on leave(: Mr Giles, Mathematics; Mr Latif, Technical; Mr Lindgreen, Technical.

To replace these staff members and to accommodate the increasing roll, a number of appointments were made at the beginning of Term 1 this year.

Shortly alter school commenced, Mr Craig, Technical and Mrs Dalton, Commercial also joined our staff Miss Bold continued in a relieving capacity in the Physical Education Department until her departure for overseas partway through the first term.

At the end of Term 1, Miss Bowen left for an overseas trip and Mr Beuning resigned from the Technical Department.

During Term 2, Mr Tutty joined the Technical Department coming to us from Aotea College in Wellington. At the end of Term 2, Mrs Keung, Maori Lanuage; Mr McDonald, Mathematics and Computing and Mr Pearson, Mathematics, resigned their positions.

Their places were taken during Term 3 by a number of relieving staff and thanks to them for filling in.

At the time of writing of these staff notes, three staff have indicated their intentions to resign: Mrs Hebenton, Mr Hallsworth, who is returning to England and Mr Main who retires after nineteen years at Manurewa High School.

As well as the teaching staff, a number of changes occurred in the administration and ancillary area. The Executive Officer, Mr Tyms, retired after long service with the school and his position was taken early in Term 1 by Mr Ball. Nurse Lucas retired after a long association with the school and her place was taken by Nurse Picard. Mrs Bailey, School Office, resigned her position and was replaced by Mrs Wilkinson.

During Term 2, the Principal's Secretary, Mrs Whelan, resigned her position Is after 8 years service and her position has been taken by Mrs Hornby.

To all staff who have left and to those who will leave at the end of this 1k year, we thank you for your contribution while you were with us and wish you every success in the future.

MR MAIN Mr Main, Head of the Technical Department and Senior Dean retires this year after serving at the school for 20 years.

He came to the school in 1967 from New Plymouth where he had been a manager in the construction industry for some 11 years. It was time for a change. He had had enough of the world of industry and so into the world of teaching he came. However those years of being in charge of people certainly helped in his teaching career.

An assistant teacher in 1967, times were different. There were 35 periods in a week and only two were non-contact. Mr Main taught Woodwork, Technical Drawing, Mathematics. Social Studies and even 1 period of Homecraft per week. There were only half the number of students then, 750. a much more manageable size school. In fact the roll dropped when James Cook opened.

Besides having the versatility to teach many subjects. Mr Main believes that all teachers should have the experience of the world outside of the school world, to experience and be aware of the type of world that their students will go into.

From 1969 to 1977 Mr Main was the school's Careers Adviser, and so he continued his philosophy that one should be aware of the working life that students will one day go into.

His son, Allan, was a student at Manurewa High School, moving through to the 7th Form to become a prefect and gain a Bursary. This took him on to Massey university and he is now Market Development Manager for the New Zealand Dairy Board.

Originally Mr & Mrs Main lived in Papakura but soon moved to Manurewa.

It was obvious that Mr Main was to establish himself well in this school. he became P.R. 2 in Technical Drawing, a Form 7 Form Teacher, House Master, and is now Head of the Department and has been Senior Dean for three years.

MRS THOMPSON - LIBRARIAN Over the past 20 years of working in the library. Mrs Thompson has contributed a great deal of time and effort to this school and its pupils.

The 'building' of the game of soccer in the school owes much to the work of Mr Main and other teachers. Originally the soccer field was the present girls hockey field and Mr Main determined to bring this sport 'out from behind', not only by having the site of the field shifted to a more prominent position, but by establishing good teams in this sport.

Sadly she will be leaving us at the end of this year. Retirement was her own choice, as she is moving into a new home and would like more time to settle in and spend with her children.

Raising funds for the school has been one of Mr Main's fortes. Originally he directed a full-scale raffle, the money from which went into the schools general funds. Walkathons have become well known as Mr Main's 'babies'.

He has directed three, one of which raised $20,000 for the Pavilion and most recent in 1985 provided valuable funds for the school's present mini bus.

Mrs Thompson has three children, Dianne, Vicki and George, all of whom are past pupils of Manurewa High School. Dianne was a deputy head prefect. Now all three children are grown up and have their own families.

Mrs Thompson has many different responsibilities in her job.

The Pavilion has always been very much Mr Main's responsibility. He in fact produced sketch plans for the building, made a model of it, raised money for it, and it still remains one of his areas of control.

Processing books; negotiating and buying new books; some secretarial work; planning the timetable for class visits; setting high standard of discipline in the library and the job she is most commended for is the mending of books. Mrs Thompson has saved the school a lot of money through her ability to mend books.

The Technical Departent under Mr Main's control has become recognised nationally as one of the best. This has been born out by the continuing national successes from the students at this school. Mr Main attributes this successs to team work amongst the staff in the department. Each teacher is assigned an area of responsibility without extra allocation of time or money. With this and regular meeting the teachers have always worked well together. Sure, there have been differences but in the end co-operation has won the day. Mr Main is most insistent that the technical staff have worked very hard, because they all realise that the pupils are the very first consideration.

Mrs Thompson does not limit her capabilities to her specialised area. This was proved by her extensive help in moving the library from A6 to where it stands now. Mrs Thompson and Mrs Givens largely contributed to the plans of this library. Once again Mrs Thompson has donated her help in the planning of the new library extension.

Mrs Thompson is well known throughout the school for her easy-going, hard-working and pleasant nature. She has also become a motherly figure to many pupils who seek advice and guidance from her. Every staff member to stated that she is a very co-operative and easy person to work with.

Technical subjects have seen large changes in their curriculums, but at Manurewa High School they seem to be working very successfully, There is still much work to be done, and the technical staff have to continue their commitment to the well-being of the students and the students need to respond to the engendered motivation.

In his retirement Mr Main will spend more time on his hobby of woodturning, playing golf, and travelling to see pads of New Zealand that he has yet to visit. He may even extend this to overseas. His guiding principle will be that he will be able to do what he wants to when he wants. Mrs Main has been retired for three years now, and has so enjoyed it that she is looking forward very much to being able to spend some of that extra time with her husband.

There is an agreement within the school the Mr Main's leadership of the Technical Department and the Senior School has been strong and lair. he is quick to take acton, as some students have found to their regret, but there is no doubting that his sincere concern for the overall well-being of pupils at this school will greatly missed.

The school wishes Mr and Mrs Main much health and happiness in their well earned retirement.

Parent Teacher Association

Manurewa High School— Mini Bus With the money raised from last years walkathon, $10,000 and profit from the Canteen and Bookroom accounts, Manurewa High School this year acquired a Mini Bus.

1986 proved to be one of the busiest and one of the most significant ye. ever.

In the first place the Association formally adopted a brand new conslitut at its Annual General Meeting. While it has never been difficult for the P to operate under a constitution which was written in 1960 and subseguer lost. the committee felt that its business and the service it could offer the school and to parents would be ignored by a new set of rules.

A Mazda E2000, it will hold 14 passengers, is petrol powered, and has a tow bar so that the school's also recently acquired dinghy trailer can be towed to the school's outdoor education centre.

Now, sports teams and outdoor education parties can be transported to games and sites. The Form Three Outdoor Education Camps in Term II the mini bus was in constant use with these camps for 4 weeks.

Manurewa residents will notice the bus. The school's name and crest have been painted onto the sides of the white van. This was completed by the suppliers. 'Greens Mazda'.

The wisdom of this decision was revealed during the year as the P increased its activities and branched out into new areas. Our titian. procedures were reviewed and a full programme of events organis Highlights of the year were the evening for parents of new pupils, wt saw a record attendance, and the Fashion Parade which also broke reco for attendance, quality and (HURRAH!) profit.

The fitness of the drivers/teachers will also be assured by the requirement that all drivers have sat and passed a defensive driving course. This has been arranged within the school and encompassed 8 hours of information and demonstration.

Throughout the year the PTA maintained its second hand uniform story service which has grown continuously over the past few years. At the ye end it was decided that this area should be considerably increased by introduction of the sale of new P.E. uniforms.

The Mini Bus not only carries people, but has much space for equipment, and seats can be removed for extra space.

Obviously the PTA committee which meets monthly, can't do everytt and the committee has been very grateful for the help of many staff, many parents and pupils who gave freely of their time to assist the sat during 1986.

NURSE LUCAS Nurse Lucas retired at the end of 1985, and this year we would like to p tribute to her contribution to the school.

Originally her husband was teaching in the Technical Department at t school, and it was he who advised her that there was a vacancy for a nur at Manurewa High School. At first her position was part-time voluntary t then it soon became full-time.

The Sick Bay was originally M Block before it was moved to t administration block. Nurse Lucas was known to buy things for the S bay so that it was an acceptable environment.

Uniforms were part of her duties for quite some time and she was km, to take uniforms home for repair. It was this kind of personally genera service which endeared her as a much appreciated part of our school.

THE WORKDAY Tuesday 15 July was the date of the first workday the school had ever held. Pupils, with varying degrees of enthusiasm sought jobs with the community and raised nearly $13,000. Since the dale was at the end of the mid-term break, many pupils earned money during the break as well so that sum achieved very high totals.

As part of her nursing duties, Nurse Lucas took the time to completely cc for any students who were ill. She used he own car and time to transp students home or to the hospital, and often waited around with the patir until parents arrived. Most evenings she would in fact be on the telepha to inquire as to the progress of sick students she had dealt with during I day.

The school was lucky in the willingness of so many members of the community to employ and pay pupils. Moreover, prizes were donated and awarded to pupils who had raised more than $20. One form, 4AL raised more per head than any other, and got a free school trip as a result.

Much organisation is required when it came to assisting the Het Deparment to immunise against T.B. or conduct surveys. Those in Health Deparment always had the highest respect for her because E had good relations with all those she came in contact with.

This being our first workday, we learnt a great deal. We hope to be able to raise funds in this way perhaps every two or three years and thus build up not only our own facilities but also a reputation for good, efficient and willing service to the community.

To the many students she had dealings with, Nurse Lucas always gav sense of responsiblity for basic cleanliness and basic health care. It been said that because of this she was seen very much as a mothei everybody.

The staff were also recipients of her care. For many years Nurse prepa the morning teas and was known to give impromptu 'shouts' and tall staff who she felt needed a friendly word.

One of her most appreciated talents was the arrangement of flowers special occasions such as prizegivings. In this as in all things she iâ– most generous, devoting much time and money to things she saw important to the school.

Originally from England, they moved from Wellington to Manurewa ; now live in Howick. Her son Peter attended this school and was Hi Prefect. Her daughter Norma taught night classes at this school and fr there has gone on to become qualified so that she can work as a day FT teacher. Her other daughter Janice has followed her mothers foots[ and is a nurse at Middlemore Hospital. Nurse Lucas has five grandchildre In her retirement we understand that she has been playing bowls, gc shopping and enjoying musical shows. Her family is most important to and with her sister, she and her husband intend to holiday in England r year.

The depth of love for Nurse Lucas still remains within the school and hope her retirement continues to be healthy and happy.

But the final whistle blew we came through The game was ours through and through.

SAMOAN GROUP 1986 Our polynesian group consists of ten girls and one boy. This year we participated in the Polynesian Festival which was held at Nga Tapuwae College.

We were in the non-competitive section and we provided entertainment for the audience.

The items that were presented were:1. Maululu - This item consisted of different pans of songs which was put together to from one dance.

2. Saga - this is a special Samoan drum dance.

3. Taualuga - this is when one girl dances and the others sing.

The items above were put together by our group who have thoroughly enjoyed this year. We would like to thank Miss Gregory for organising the group and providing rooms for practise.

The Cook Island group worked hard on items and joined the Samoan and Maori Groups in entertaining the visiting rugby team from Southport.

The Shooting Of Anne McGew A bunch of the girls were whooping it up in the discotheque saloon, While out on the floor, the go-go boys all danced to a funky tune.

Sipping her booze at the singles bar was dangerous Ann McGew She'd come to stare at the men down there, especially one named Lou. Then out of the night and up to the bar, a female stranger came; And though she'd never been there before, she knew the rules of the game 'It's drinks on me" she yelled, and winked at the gentleman known as Lou, While down the bar came a look of rage from dangerous Ann McGew. KEY CLUB The Key Club started as any other, with multitudes of people joining a 'social' club. When they realised being in the Club meant hard work within the community, the numbers dropped to the steady number of about 2() members.

The year was kicked off with the usual social get-together at the school pool with a bar-b-que to get to know each other. Then came the collections, working bees, dances and other things 'expected' of the Key Club.

We decided that this year we should try and have an interaction between clubs and become more recognised in the school community - atter realising that some third formers thought we were a singing group. So we got hold of the President of the James Cook Key Club and organised bar-b-ques and other social events with them, which brought our clubs together and will hopefully continue into next year. We also have organized two Third and Fourth form dances this year, both of which were very successful and have had them coming back for more.

We have also contributed in monetary terms - donating money for paint (and labour). Sports Person of the Year and for the magazine. The Key Club also has helped at Parent/Teachers meeting and other social evenings in the school.

Thanks must go to Mr Watson, the teacher associated with the club, for time (and patience) which he has given us freely. Good luck to next years Key which will no doubt be as successful.

CULTURAL COUNCIL The Cultural Council play an important part in promoting and organ our school's Dramatic productions. The first term's production "A Strer Named Desire" was aided by the Cultural Council in ushering, ticket s and "front of house" duties. Promotional posters were also issued to areas by members of the council.

The musical "Sheik, Rattle and Roll" involved members again in the a areas and with tea and coffee sales at interval. Under the leaders!'

Miss Gallot, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Mulcahy, we successfully organise door sales and tickets for two productions and for the third term's fa! parade, helping each of these events to be complete successes.

ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL Another sunny monday moring at M.H.S and the school seems to have an extra gleam to it. Unbeknown to the wide-eyed-innocent youths of our school, it was not a work of magic but the work of the Environmental Council.

This year's council had a large number of pupils both from the junior and senior school, and with Mr Kilgour as Chairman, we had Support from many other teachers - Mr Fella, Mr Vause, Miss Overton (without her coffee cake we would never have got through the working bees), Mrs Howard, Miss Briggs and Mr Beuning Although we did not get through as much as we had hoped for, due to lack of funds and time, we did get alot of work done around the school. The year started off with a working bee, in which we cleared gardens and pruned trees, we had other working bees in which we did much the same, however we had one collaboration with the Key Club, in which we painted as many fences as our paint would cover (and probably as many people). Not only did the Environmental Council provide manual labour, but also money, in the purchasing of trees, and intelligence, in the planning of areas in the school.

All in all this year has been very profitable for the school, and the members, and will continue into next year.

The Sports Council, after a shaky start, have become a close-knit group Mr McNae has led a hard-working learn; Julie McKinnon, Stephen Wrigley, in their organisation of the Sports Personality of the Year Dinner. Everyone had a fabulous time helping to officiate the School Athletics Day, they settled down to their main and enjoyed our guest speaker, Graham Mourie. task of selling tickets and generally organising the dinner.

THE EEL The eel felt the vibrations, looked up and saw the ripples made from a new born mallard duckling. The giant longfinned eel rose quickly, gently brushing the duckling's webbed feet testing to see if it was edible. Above the surface the infant duckling sensed the danger from below and started to swim around in helpless circles crying for its mother, which was nowhere to be seen. The eel was in no hurry and played with it like a kitten playing with a mouse. Then gently, hardly moving, its massive tail rose gingerly took one of the ducklings legs into her mouth, sucked it right in to get a firm grip on its body and then engulfed it with a sudden gulp.

POLYNESIAN FESTIVAL The Maori Culture Group practised from 3.30pm to 5pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Mrs Adelaide Kaka and Mrs Michelle Keung were the tutors.

The boys Haka and Waiata-a-ringa practices took place on Wednesday and Thursday, 4.30pm to 6pm, and these were tutored by Thomas Hohaia, an ex-prefect of the school.

Part of the preparation was a four day stay at the Tahuna Marae, Waiuku.

The participants not only learnt the protocol of the marae, nga tikanga o to marae, but they were able to practise for the Polynesian Festival held at Nga Tapuwae College, Mangere, Friday 18th April.

Sessions on the history of the marae, cultural practises, church services. gymnasium activities, hakari and concert were the schedule for the lour days.

Of special note was the Hakari which took place at the Tahuna Marae on Thursday evening. In full costume the group conducted the Powhiri, welcoming their Manuhiri, followed by a Church Service at 7pm, Kai at 7.45pm and at 9pm a concert and sharing night was held.

Manurewa High School Maori Culture Group performed in the noncompetitive section at Nga Tapuwai College at 3.30pm Friday 18 April. To enter the competitive section meant rehearsals seven nights a week to 'come up to' the standard. The group is hopeful to be in this section next year.

The Auckland Science Exhibition Around the beginning of the second term our science teacher informed our class that we had been selected to represent the third form at the 27th Science Exhibition.

They performed their entrance, 1.2 action songs (waiata-a-ringa), poi, chorale, women's haka, men's haka, and their exit.

We began to investigate "galvanic reponse" as this subject was very intriguing. During our experiments for this project we produced a small electric arc. On the discovery of this decided to change our project to The properties and uses of the electric arc."

Soon it was time to enter the project but we had not finished, we worked furiously on the project for several days, and sometimes into the night. Our project had to be entered on the Sunday as this was the final installation day. On the Sunday we barely managed to complete the project but we got it to the museum on time. On arrival we were met by a bewildering number of flashing and beeping projects, but in our section there was no real competition.

The following Tuesday was the judging day. We arrived certain of a prize but were astounded at the myriad of projects that had cropped up in our section.

We were early and the judges came to our project first. For about Vx an hour we explained our experiment and our conclusions to the judges, who were very skilled in their fields.

The next day we were informed by our science teacher. Mr Pygott, that we had gained a place in the physical science experimental section. We were elated with the news and wondered what our prize would be. Soon the presentation day came ticking around and we went off the the museum for the fourth time. We entered the auditorium and while we were waiting a fire alarm was activated. The building was evacuated and we all stood outside in the freezing cold until the firechief declared it a false alarm. We re-entered the museum where they started the presentations.

Soon we were on stage accepting the first prize in our class from the hands of Dame Cath Tizard. The prize was fifty dollars, needless to say we were jubilant. Ten minutes later it was announced that we had also won third prize in special class ten, Industry. Again we went forward and were presented with our prize this time twenty dollars.

We were pleased that we had been the sole representatives for Manurewa High School. It was an allround enjoyable experience.

DEBATING •

1986 proved to be a dhallenging year for the three debating teams.

Especially for the senior team (consisting of Sara Ford , Dayne Batchelder and Jacqui Thomson) who entered for the first time in the nationwide Jaycees competition. With the help of coach/chauffeur (Mrs Chan), they managed to battle their way to the fifth round until they fell prey to the experience of McLeans College.

The second senior team, (Derek Quigley, Cushla Hatfield, and Johnathon Mosen) and the junior team, (Alayna Batcheldor, Jo Wrigley, loana Vaetoru and Halley Milne) both entered in the North Shore Debating League, where they proved to be impressive against experienced competition.

The three teams wish to thank both Mrs Chan and Mrs Cottle-Meyhen.

Without their help, encouragement and allround brilliance, all we have achieved would have been impossible. We look forward to 1987 and future

successes.

Such qualities of the play are also displayed in tactfully choreographed, high action fight scenes and powerful songs like "Cool" and the climatic piece "The Rumble". Yet the dawning sensuality of songs like "Maria" and "Somewhere" please the mind and the heart.

Maria and the girls provide gleaming entertainment in the bright numbers "America" and "I Feel Pretty".

The brilliant, exemplary performance given by this diligent, extremely talented cast and of course the immaculately polished orchestration, is one of the world class. All the elements of an absolute SMASH HIT. S. Marshall 13

7th FORM BIOLOGY CAMP On Monday 7 April, we 9 intrepid explorers set off for the biological wilds of Piha. Piha Surf Club and first impressions - well, we're not allowed to swear in this magazine. Within half an hour we were well adjusted to the fact that the shower curtains had "humungus" holes in all the wrong places, we're coping with the serious shortage of a bathroom door and didn't even mind brushing our teeth with salt water!

That afternoon the real work began - and for a week it didn't stop. The next 5 days were filled with fascinating studies of zonation, stratification, the rock shore and other biological phenomena including a stream in which 3 of our most able students will swear they saw the Loch Ness Monster.

The evenings were spent writing up the day's reports - a heavy task indeed.

Still we found time for games of Trivial Pursuit and 500 between work, sleep and meals, Ah - meals. Actually the less said about them the better.

However, one week, one severe case of laryngitis, one seance and one comet (!) later we arrived back in Manurewa - tired but none the worse for wear.

Thanks to Mrs Howard and Mr Pygott for an enjoyable and educational week, and to Mr Hallsworth for his physics lesson. Special thanks must also go to the Piha Surf Lifesaving Association for their generous liquid donation. It was much appreciated.

7th Form Accounting Investment Club The 7th Form Accounting class as part of their company assignment contributed from $40-$50 each to invest in a New Zealand Public Company.

Brierleys was chosen and 100 shares bought at $467. Three months later they were realised for $588, only to watch helplessly as three days later they peaked over $7. A useful exercise for the class and a return of around 36% p a. on their investment.

.1 1E .7Ti During the first term a lot of responsibility fell to our deputies, due to Annemarie's involvement in Netball and mine in Drama. We are grateful for the support Tina, Peter and the rest of the prefects gave during Term I and throughout the year.

Our leadership camp and Prefects Trip to Paihia served as ideal 'melting pots' where understanding and support was established within the group.

Our personal thanks to Mrs Oates for some outstanding driving! (and Mr Kidd who loved going round in circles) and to Mrs Dixon for being on our side when it came to curfews!

The unity achieved through these trips was an essential factor in the superb tactical understanding between the prefects, when confronting the ruthless and chauvenistic staff, on the soccer and hockey fields. To the staff, wiling? or stupid enough to participate (especially the soccer cheerleaders - weren't they lovely?) a special thank you and so sorry we beat you!

1986 has been a very full and active year which we have both enjoyed at Manurewa High School.

From July 31 to August 3 we 'shook Paihia up something wicked' as 24 prefects and four teachers assaulted the (until then) peaceful seaside resort.

The object of the hip was to form a closer bond between the prefects and with the staff ........... and maybe learn a thing or two.

Thursday: - I discover seagull quite fancy cheescake and buns - Mrs Dixon learned not to leave the money behind - We learned not to get our water-pistols confiscated - I learned to tell the time at Clapham Clock Museum - We discovered its hard to play late night leap-frog in darkness on a beach Friday: - Mr 'Popeye' Kidd found that the Tiger Lily sways a trifle - Andrew discovered one can 'fly' between chairs with strong winds - I learned not to say "So where ya from" in an American drawl to 'disguised' American tourists.

- We discovered how to fool shopkeepers with out 'new' American accents.

After everyone finished the tour of the building and found their seats the dancing began. The band, PG and the Hot Tips, played a variety of music from old to new.

Sunday: We learned that Mrs Oates as well as being a teacher and a Dean, drives during her holidays for the Renault Grand Prix Team.

- Captain 'Popeye' Kidd's second name is Elmer-Yokohama and he is an undercover tourist (Korn Krikely bling Kameraa!)

- Success is achieved only with consideration, co-operation and teamwork

The meal was eaten, with many going back for seconds, even thirds and the refreshments that were constantly served were appreciated alter a fit of exhausting dancing.

The photographer who attended was Mr Harrison who took a variety of photos, from those of couples to those who just wanted to keep it in the family. The 78th formers who looked upon this ball as their last, even got a photo taken all together.

On the night everyone was transformed into fine looking young adults, but top marks must go to Stuart Coleson for his originality! Nice one Stul The evening came to an end with everyone (even the teachers) wishing it could continue.

Our thanks go to the prefects who all put a lot of time and effort into the preparation of the ball, to Mr Harrison, and to all the other people who assisted in the organisation and running of the ball.

1985 Fourth Form Cycle Tour

BLOOD BANK

On December 1985 a group of approximately 25 dedicated students began the first stage of their cycle tour which took them along the Great South Road to Alfriston Road then to Porchester Road and up into the Hunuas.

Once again during the months of March and August the Nation Foundation of New Zealand visited our school and once again M. High School Students and teachers contributed generously. H decided they could spare a pint, bear the pain and enjoy the biscuit and tea that were given in great abundance afterwards.

Many of the students were exhausted by this stage, as we also had to contend with the rain falling vigorously but carried on with great enthusiasm.

Once again there were those that suffered, fainted, collapsed a white, green and grey. Yes have you ever seen someone go g happens, the nurse can tell you.

Some exclusive things happened on our first day, we were chased by goats along a valley road - where we had exceeded a very high speed at this stage and nearly collided with them.

All in all it was a great experience and was very beneficial for t foundation and the donors. with a few exceptions.

Tuesday 5 - We set out with great enthusiasm this morning, as we only had a short distance to ride to be able to reach our destination of Omana.

This turned out to be the easiest task of the trip, but it wasn't until nightfall that things started happening - the wind howled and the rain started, a girl fell in love with a boy nicknamed "Superman" and some jolly fool left the gate open, letting the sheep out - so in the cold windy weather in the middle of the night we had to round up all the sheep.

P.S. It was quite fun.

Wednesday 6 • This is the last day of our cycle tour and it had been so much fun so far that we don't want it to end.

We departed from our premises after lunch to start on the long journey back to school. So tar everything was going well - no one had fallen off their bikes and no punctures had occurred, but alas some person caused an injury to themselves and just up the road from this incident a person received a puncture, but we all managed to carry on to Annette's house to receive a welcoming ice-block from Annette's mother.

With this last burst of energy we all finished the cycle tour to the school grounds and we ali thoroughly enjoyed it and would do it again if we got the opportunity.

So my advice to you Fourth Formers at the end of the year would be to choose this fabulous activity.

On behalf of all the participants of the cycle tour I would like to thank Mr Parlane for organising it, Mr Vause for going along the cycle tour to collect bodies, bags, etc; Mr and Mrs Hebenton and Mrs Burney for riding with us and giving us encouragement along the way and also Mrs Chitty for the welcoming ice-blocks.

1986 GIRLS JUNIOR BASKETBALL TEAM A very successlul year for our team. All of our girls displayed their van( talents and abilities within the different aspects of the game.

We started the competition round as a "non-challengeable" team getti beaten by harder teams. However the 2nd round was the start of c competition. We all set ourselves goals, and individually, displayed c hidden talents. Our hardest competition came from Otahuhu and Roset A team. In the end we came a tie with Otahuhu. 1st equal. By this id completed a high team spirit.

We express our thanks and gratitude to our coaches Mr J. Longbotto and Miss J. Noovao. We'd also like to thank the parents and families Hi, supported us.

ASTRONOMY CLUB 1986 will be remembered as the year of the return of Haley's Comet.

Although many were disappointed that the display in the night sky was not as they had expected, others were able to see the comet and will have something to remember.

In April club members together with a large number of "comet spotters" and their families met to catch a glimpse of the pale comet through a telescope at the school. Although the tail was not obvious most were able to see the comet in the sky with the naked eye. and then through the 'scope'. Although over 150 million kiliometres away the comet was surprisingly large in the sky.

Astronomy can be a rewarding hobby but one which requires patience and careful observation. The club has a small group of enthusiasts who enjoy grappling with the ideas of vast distances and sizes of clestial objects and learning of the wide variety of objects which to some people are just "stars".

THE COMPUTER CLUB This year the Computer Club has been quite successful despite several upsets such as theft. We have just lost Mr McDonald from the staff and this would have slowed the club if John Rauner hadn't been around to help. Now for the bad news.

Three thefts have occured this year. The first being three Newsroom disks being stolen by a member. When these were returned the thief lost his membership.

More stolen disks. This time members as well as schools. Some still haven't been recovered.

Lastly with thefts, a Commodore 64 Keyboard and a powerpack for the computer were stolen.

Now that the bad news is over and done with I can get on with congratulating the monitors who handle bookings and keep a close eye on the members of the club. First for John Rauner who has handled more monitor duty than any of the others. He takes bookings at interval almost every morning and is in there every morning interval, lunch break and after school. Now to congratulate Nigel Cunningham who also does monitor duty. He is almost always there and frequently handles bookings and helps John.

Most members of the Club are satisfied with it this year. Many will be coming back next year to the club and we will have more members, so we expect more members next year. See you next year.

CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP •

Another year of fun, fellowship, activity and prayer is almost over for the group of Christians who meet regularly on Thursday lunchtimes. We've learnt a lot about each other and grown more confident in our knowledge of and relationship with God. The group made a big impact at the beginning of the year to attract newcomers to the school and new members. The Fabulous Fish Fiesta, lunchtime questionnaire, Friday night bar-b-que, and assembly program all helped to make the group known.

Christos the Clown drew a big crowd to his outdoor performance and many people had the chance to hear something of God's good news.

A highlight of the year for some of us was the Insomnia Night for all the Auckland Schools. We were on the go from 7.00 p.m. to 7.00 a.m. hydrosliding, skating, eating, listening to live bands and watching movies.

A great night (and Mrs Burney was the only one from here who stayed awake for the whole 12 hours).

A disappointment this year has been the lack of senior students. We would really like the group to run itself with the teachers just being advisors but that can't happen until we have some more people. Seniors, please consider us when you come back next year. We need you!

Mrs "raise-your-eyebrows-and-drop-your-jaw" James and Mr "twinkletoes" Waardenburg gallently tried to tum thirty.five pupils into singers. They were backed by seven staff members who were also trying. Mrs van Twuiver, Mrs Chan and Miss Perjanik provided three different "harmonies" which floated out and beyond out choir's meagre talents. Mr Hallsworth, Mr Clarke and Mr Pearson proved themselves to be very proficient with their dum, dum, dum, dum as a chorus line and will Mr Albrecht stop with everybody else?

The choir took part in the Manukau Secondary Schools Festival and I'm sure that Mr Waardenberg and Mrs James were proud in Messiah's Hallelujah Chorus by Handel. Bravely singing our hearts out while being surrounded by three hundred other prople who knew what they were doing.

Other highlights included sitting on hard seats for two hours whilst taking part in the ANZAC service and watching people troop across the stage during prizegiving..

Mrs James and Mr Waardenberg might not have taught as to sing but they taught us to eat fast!

SIXTH FORM DRAMA OPTION At the beginning of Term One there were nine of us but during the year three have left. In a way our small number limited the choice of scripts we could work with, but it has also enabled us all to become a very close-knit group, supporting and depending on each other as friends a well as drama students.

Our Term One mini-production, which we mainly wrote, directed and produced ourselves, was a slightly "different" version of 'Romeo and Juliet'.

We took a scene from Shakespeare's play and updated it, turning a masked ball into a party, converting Romeo from the most romantic figure in literary history to the creepiest, bespectacled nerd out, and having Juliet pursue Romeo instead of the other way around. After intensive rehearsal we performed it at assembly - much to the amusement of the senior school!

In Term Two we were invited to perform a short one-act play at the Manukau City Arts Festival. Mrs Oates found a melodrama entitled "The Mushroom Pie" and we plunged into a month of constant rehearsal to be ready for the Festival. Apart from a little last-minute panic through being pressed for time (especially as most of us were going on Drama Camp the following morning) we carried it off and were warmly received by our audience.

DRAMA OPTION Though students who choose to study drama at Form 3, 4 and 6 levels are not compelled to participate in the school's major production, the desire to do so has grown; the enthusiasm has lad to the school's third term production becoming the presence of the option classes.

Last year the Form 3 drama option opened the way for the schemes now operating at other levels; the material taught is based on creative drama and the subject is examinable in a practical as well as a theoretical way.

Most classes performed at assemblies and other functions earlier in the year, eg Form 6 contributed an item at the Manukau Band's Festival at Manukau City Centre.

Mrs. Oates if very pleased with the progress being made in these classes - students find they gain in confidence, in oral and literary skills and in their awareness of theatre arts even if they have never performed before.

4th Form Drama The 1986 4th 'form drama class. has been a very worthwhile and fulfil experience for all the students who were involved. The year started w a class discussion, when each person gave their reason or reasons choosing drama as one of their options in the 4th form year. There we two drama classes, one taken by Mrs Oates and the other class taken Miss Kennedy.

Each person in the class was to keep a drama journal, with a write-up the happenings of each drama period; a folder was used to keep a projects and any scripts of plays that were performed during the year. T1 plays were performed in the first term - one called "Boots 'n' All" and tl other was "King Chicken". Both plays were very well done, and gave the students involved a good experience. The end of year productions a underway and will be performed to other schools as well as Manure% High School.

The high standards of work displayed this year, will certainly become eu better in the years to come. Very well done to all in the 4th from dran class, and a special thanks to Mrs Oates and Miss Kennedy for being su wonderful teachers.

THE BEST TYPE OF HOLIDAY

HOMAI RESOURCE ROOM REPORT

The best type of holiday that I have had this year, was down to Taumaranui with the Manukau Rotary Exchange Scheme for a week.

The Homai Resource Room continues to flourish twenty years after its establishment at Manurewa High. This year, nineteen visually impaired students attended the school and consequently the Resource Room. Out of the nineteen students in attendance, eleven are braille users while the other seven use large print or equipment which will enable them to read standard print. The Resource Room is so well equipped to handle the needs of blind people, students come from as far away as Gore to Manurewa High. Ten of the students in the Resource Room live in hostels at Homai college and only see their parents in the holidays. The other eleven live at home in Auckland.

When I left Auckland I didn't know quite what to expect and whether or not I would enjoy myself. I was also quite unsure of myself with how I was going to relate to my host parents and whether t would like them.

I reached Taumaranui at teatime (6.00 pm) Sunday night and was introduced to the family I was to stay with, who appeared to be very nice.

At teatime the tension was easing slightly, but it was still lingering there.

We tried to overcome this by asking each other questions such as, 'What is my hometown like?' and in return I asked them questions about their farm.

After tea the tension was finally released, as I told them about my little mishap at teatime, which I thought they had noticed.

Whilst I was eating my tea the rubber bands from my braces broke and I had felt a sense of embarassment. When I had told them this we all started laughing. and they told me that they hadn't even noticed.

Well from here on in, I got on with my host family like a pea in a pod, they were absolutely wonderful.

From this holiday I accomplished many new experiences which I shall never forget - I even accomplioshed the great ordeal of how to ride a motorcycle which was very educational for a person like me, along with this I was also taught how to tell which fawn belonged to which mother and how to round up sheep and cattle on rough hill country with a motorbike, I even did a fantastic jump across a stream in top gear and chonked out on the other side.

This year, Mrs Wells, one of the Resource Room Staff, has been on a course involving the teaching of visually impaired people and the Resource Room has been staffed by Mrs Cox and Mrs Arrof part-time, and Mrs Farmer full-time. Mrs Farmer was the first teacher in the Resource Room when it was established in 1966 so it is nice once again to have the benefit of her experience.

Over the last year or two the Resource Room has been very fortunate to obtain some very sophisticated computing equipment which in effect gives us the potential to halve our work load. We have braille terminal facitilies and a speech synthesiser which allows the visually impaired person to halve their work load.

We've all enjoyed this year in the Resource Room and those of us returning next year are looking forward to making new friends and meeting new challenges.

ORCHESTRA CAMP I am sure the rest of the orchestra will agree with me when I say that the highlight of the year must be the orchestra camp held at Willow Park at the beginning of term two.

Although most of the day was spent leering the practicing music for the school musical and public performances, there was still plenty of time for relaxation, The newspaper competition on the final night showed Mrs James' natural ability as a mummy, and the talent quest later uncovered the hidden talent of the orchestra members.

The musical performance by - "The most consistent runner", Mr Fella; "Daddy longlegs", Mr Waardenburg; "Most improved double bass player, "Miss Overton; and "Best batton thrower", Mrs James. Its just a shame this delightfully funny item backfired because a certain person who wishes to remain anonymous orgainised the reaction-less response from the student audience.

The Teddy Bear competition also that night, proved that the human versions of these toy animals, are more popular with the two human bears entered gaining the two highest places, the winning bear was Mr James who turned up especially for the occasion (sorry Mrs James but that was rigged too).

All and all it has been a great year for the orchestra.

1986 MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL. ORCHESTRA Loss of sleep, long hours of practice, unplayable music and tons of dedication. If you think this is all the Manurewa High School Orchestra has to offer, think again. Do you think approximately 35 kids and 4 teachers would drag themselves to school at quarter to 8 on Tuesday mornings and Firday lunchtimes for that? Not Being a part of the orchestra means sharing the joys and hardships of putting together performances.

The orchestra's engagements this year included - performing for school assemblies, special ceremonies like the ANZAC SERVICE and prizegivings.

Probably the most noteable performance must have been performing on the "flying" stage at Manukau City Centre as guests for the Manukau City Bank.

Members of the orchestra were also involved in the South Auckland Secondary School's Festival Orchestra and Instrumental groups for school productions.

On behalf of the orchestra, I as orchestra leader wish to thank Mrs James, our conductor, for the time and effort that she has put into the orchestra.

It's been good fun.

I wrote a great deal about the strange things people do in New Zealand to my friends in Japan. People walk barefoot, walk in the rain without an umbrella, and blow their noses in front of everybody without hesitation. But the big characters with three exclamation marks, was the fact, that grown men wear shorts!!!! We never have shorts as a uniform for the officers or boys of junior and senior high school. So when I saw customs officers in shorts at the airport - First I was surprised, Second I doubted my eyes, and Third, f had a problem controlling my laughter.

I feel my last two and a half years have been longer than just two and a half years thinking of accountable things. They weren't all nice and exciting, but I can say it has been the hardest time I every had in my life. There are limes, when I thought, how much fun I could have if I didn't come to New Zealand. I thought I couldn't take all the grief. But I'm glad I didn't give up at the lime. I don't know whether it will be my advantage or disavantage of mine, but now, I lived in two different cultures, speak two different languages, and know the wider world.

DERRYN MILNE

I came from Japan to New Zealand about two and a half years ago because of my fathers job. The things I knew about New Zealand were in fact, very very little. Images of New Zealand to Japanese people are sheep, Southern Cross. and kiwifruit. All my friends said "Bring back a flock of sheep and a kiwifruit vine!".

Derryn Milne, recently won the prestigious Kormako Speech Competition, in the Junior English section.

When I arrived in New Zealand. my first impression was green, green, and green. I could even see real sheep and cows. It looked so incredible thinking of Tokyo. I've seen cows about five times and have seen sheep exactly twice at the zoo in my life. Another incredible impression was the-towns.

I've heard that Auckland was the biggest city in New Zealand. Now, I understand very well, that Tokyo is the city of sales and Auckland is a city of sails.

When I decided which school to go to, I made guile a lot of new discoveries.

Such as. New Zealand's school grounds are covered with grass, we change the class rooms each period, and we just walk inside of the school with out-side shoes. But the greatest difference I most appreciated was that we students don't have to clean our school by ourselves! In Japan, we have to sweep the floor, clean the grounds etc.

There were lots of things I found difficult because of different people and culture. For example, when I first came here, everybody looked the same and walked the same. Especially girls with high heels frightened me with the noise on concrete. It sounded like the army. But the hardest thing of all was to pick up the language. a

I can say there is no similarity between Japanese and English in pronounciation and warmer. So at first the English writing looked like graphics and the language sound like music.

It was very embarrassing. Everybody laughs and you don't know the reason why. One time my friend asked me, Have you done your homework?" replied, "No I couldn't I got stuck up". Another time, my mother went to Whitcoulls and asked. "Could you give me some elbows please". She came back empty handed. Later we found out that it was supposed to be 'envelopes'. think I have done, and am still doing things you think funny, but without noticing it. On the other hand. things you think are not funny, are the things I find funny.

Kerryn has distinguished herself in public speaking for the last two years now. She has taken part in classroom speech competitions and in the school's finals, but has reserved her best efforts for the Maori class speech giving. This year Derryn spoke on 'The Most Important Thing In The World' and won with this speech.

She took this speech to the Auckland Secondary Schools Regional Speech Competition, which this year was held at Waiuku College. The theme of this speech is that the most important thing is people and their diversity.

At the end of the day the prize was hers.

From there. Derryn took her representation to Rotorua for the National Korimako Speech Competition. This competition is divided into different sections, Senior Maori and Senior English. Junior Maori and Junior English.

It is in this last category that Derryn was thrilled to take the national title.

Her winning speech was entitled 'My Friends Dictate My Behaviour' lasted six minutes. Derryns answer to this statement was that friends dictation of your behaviour depends on what is important to you. In other words we allow friends to dictate to us in those matters which we see as iomportant and won't be dictated if we believe it is not important.

In good tradition, Derryn was supported at the National Competition by her mother, 9 students from Manurewa High School, 3 from other schools and Mr Albrecht, a teacher from Manurewa High School. These people were at the Civic Centre in Rotorua to proudly witness the prize-winning performance of their much respected daughter, friend and student_ To Derryn went the Sir Turi Carrol trophy, a trophy which again bears the name of Milne. Derryn, although in her own right, is following in the steps of her older sister Kerri. Derryn began her third form year in 1985 at Manurewa High School by winning the Maori class speech competition and then going on to win the Regional Junior English Speech competition in 1985, as did her sister. This year she has capped it off by winning the national title.

We are conficent that Derryn will continue this tradition and her school is very proud that they have within their midst an orator of national status.

Gidday We geographers of the pseudo 6111 form trekked to the wild, wanton wastelands of Waharau, whilst weeping our dramatic departure from the charismatic aurora (this was S Wrigley's idea) of our hallowed institution.

Fifty intrepid adventurers were accompanied by: Nelson V.K., Health freak-Pete-hyphen-Brailsford-hyphen-Allen-hyphen-tullstop-hyphen, Section 13 meandering Briggs and Arnold Schwarzenegger Bergh.

During our stay we were forced fed (along with Katies concrete lasagne) geographic case studies of the surrounding natural environment. We forged through raging torrents of freezing water. conquered contours, made maps, and surveyed the catchment area of this part of the Hunua Ranges along with many other stimulating academic and extra curricular stuff.

Our resident psycho-analyst Mr H.F.P.H.B.H.A.H.F.H. (Pete) metamorphasized us into 'adults' by honesty, trust, courgette cake, and the good ole Waharau way, (we have since reverted to our fromer delinquency).

Meal time recreated the epitomy of All Black co-ordination. Keeping in time with Darrens "I wanna pick ya nose spuds flew along the forward backline, through the window and touch down into the pot. Mealtime was a new experience (feeding time at the zoo). The menu consisted of charcoal chicken, Sally chunky coleslaw, Chris' curdled custard and cat meat.

Other camp highlights were Aaron P's amazing self-walking socks, Craigs commando kit, Sharons 'indepth' study of the creek at midnight and V.K.'s murder of an innocent ball while qualifying in his turbocharged (Andrew was pushing) Cortina for the 'Kaiaua 500".

We returned to Manurewa contented, converted and constipated. The camp was ... well . a wickedly enjoyable experience. Believe it (pause) or not.

6th FORM BIOLOGY CAMP 6th Form Bio Camp Ha! that was a joke! I think the term hard work can only loosely describe the arduous three days spent at Waharau Outdoor education camp in early March this year.

Never-the-less, we had fun, the weather was brilliant, the animals did as they were statistically expected to, so those were definite pluses for us all.

We sixth form 'creatures of the night' had never a dull moment, doing everthing from lying under the stars at night, listening to 'Brothers in Arms', watching for both Halley's Comet and shooting stars - to 'going for gold' in the 'Great all NZ jelly consumption race' (by the way, congratulations must go to Katie and Sonia, this years winners).

A relaxed atmosphere. 'La Camp Cuisine -a la Waharau never failed to 'tempt the tastebuds' after a day in the field.

CONTINUING SUCCESS IN TECHNICAL MARKS Jacqui Thomson and Paul Filipo achieved outstanding results in the 11 School Certificate examinations. This continued Manurewa High Soho excellent record in the area of Technical subject results. In the It examinations, one of the students 'topped the country' in Technology.

Both students were honored at the Auckland Technical TeachAssociation awards evening. This was held at the Auckland Second Teachers College. when 9 certificates were presented to the students achieved the top marks in technical subjects from the 62 schools in I greater Auckland area.

Jacqui has spent three years studying Technical Drawing at Manure High School: although this year she has decided to take predominan Science subjects.

There were 12 girls in the 5th form Technical Drawing classes at Manure High School in 1985, but Jacqui was the only girl at the awards ceremon One member of the audience at the ceremony commented that it was nit to have a girl receive a technical prize.

Her reasons for taking Technical Drawing were quite simple. "It soundt better than typing". Certainly it provided a 'break' from other more academ subjects and helped significantly in Mathematics. But there are undoable organisational skills that Technical Drawing provides for students. Jacet tries to be well-organised, a necessity for this subject. Her teacher, Mr F Main, is quite clear that Jacqui is an exceptional student and that th learning she has achieved in three years of technical study are of undoubto benefit to her in her sixth form year.

Paul Filipo had to produce a G Clamp, a Perspex Mirror and a Coppe Ladle for the internal assessment of Technology. Mr Main, Head o Technical Department at the school, says that much of the creditablt originality has to come from the students themselves. The teacher provide! the project desogm brief and from there the student must use their oxt ideas.

Paul's ability lies in the way he considered all the possibilities of des' and his eventual superior design.

He too has left his design and building experience behind this year concentrated on Science subjects. Mr Main is to some extent disappoint that brilliant students have not continued their technical subjects into Foi 6, but as he says "they have to consider their future".

Thanks to Mrs Howard, Mr Parlane, Mrs Wright and Mrs Salmon for 'an enjoyable outback excursion'.

The school views with much pride the country-wide recognition of school's excellent technical subject programmes and their consequl consistently fine results.

FASHION PARADE

Organised by the Manurewa High School P.T.A., Directed by Mrs Y. Van Twuiver and commentated by Mrs Sue Pellett, former Mrs New Zealand, the High School presented it's annual Fashion Parade on 24 September

The stage was decked as a cruise liner and the models were welcomed aboard by the ship's officers, to the tune of 'Sailing Away. 23 Models from the school had spent much out of school time rehearsing for this show, and the packed audience appreciated their professional routines carefully timed to the 'up-beat' music. They were assisted by ex-student Sarah Winkle, who has just returned from 6 months modelling in Italy.

The first section looked ahead to summer with the models in swimwear.

'Underground Fashions' and 'Gentry Menswear' of Manukau City were the main suppliers of the clothes and they served the school and the audience well. In the second section the casual wear was divided into the three colours for the forthcoming summer; yellow, orange and mauve.

The whole proceedings were however rudely interrupted by a few members of the school's staff who tried to pressent their fashions for 1986. The audience erupted, when as each staff member turned around one could See that the men were wearing the high heeled shoes, feather boas, split dresses and flowing gowns, and the women had grown moustaches to go with their trilbys, suits and ties. This became the talking point for interval.

In bathrobes and pyjamas from 'Hallensteins' the men escorted the young ladies into the next section of stunning and alluring nightwear from 'Hickory'.

These flowing garments were much in contrast to the next section of startling black and white, once again provided by 'Underground Fashions' and 'Gentry Menswear' of Manukau City Centre.

Two of the models, Paula Stockley and Robyn Taylor, demonstrated excellently their dance skills when they performed a highly energetic piece for entertainment. This was made even more exciting by the use of strobe lighting, which made the movement up and down the cat walk most startling.

The second to last section was entitled 'spots'. These were nicely contrasted with unusually designed jumpers which the boys had on.

The final section proved the most popular for it detailed 'After 5 Wear' and the fashion grey jackets and trousers of the young men were perfect accompaniments to the satin and lace outfits of the young ladies. With streamers, the models took their final bows, and atter presentations of gifts and flowers, Mrs Van Twuiver closed the evening with the thought that was in all minds, that indeed this parade had been the best yet and it had been a truly excellent evening.

Southport Rugby Visit : Disco The date was June 28. Venue - School Hall As soon as the Aussie guys arrived that sent the girls drooling. Something straight out of the 60's Beatlemania. Girls were lined up by the bus to take the rugby players to Waiwera.

Everybody looked forward to Saturday. Groups of neatly dressed teenagers quickly flooded into the hall by 7.30 p.m. The hall was decorated with streamers, balloons and colourful traffic lights. The pace was slow at the start but the sixth and seventh formers were soon op the dance floor. The music was loud and very 'danceable'. Refreshments were served through the night, at a price of course.

Mr Kidd and Mr Thomson kept a watchful eye on all of us. Once or twice the lights turned on to help find missing oddities. A few prizes were given out for guessing the artist.

But like all good things the disco had to end. Last dancers packed the floor.

Then a send-off where all the Aussie guys stood in the middle of the hall and rest of us joining hands and running to them to squash them.

Time to go home at midnight. A night to remember.

outdoor education From 30 June to 15 August this year all third form students at Manurewa High School attended a week's outdoor education camp at Waharau. 8 staff, who taught the classes on the camp, were in attendance, plus two prefects, and parents who wished to offer their support.

The students day at camp started at 7.00am and, except for those on breakfast duty, they undertake a warm-up exercise run before breakfast.

There were three activity periods each day with meals in between.

There were five major outdoor education activities which the students participated in, each once during the week.

Canoeing: Basic instruction was given in the handling of single kayaks.

Sailing: 5 dinghies and a trailer have recently been donated by Manurewa Rotary and put into first class order by the Technical Department of the school. A close inshore course in the sea at Waharau has been set and a motor boat was in attendance to offer assistance to the 5 students who were sailing single-handed at any time.

Orienteering: Map reading skills were taught and then the students were sent off in pairs around a prepared course within the park.

Bushcraft: Discussion involves what equipment to take, tramping party safety procedures, navigation, route finding, emergency procedures, and first aid. All of these are then actually practised 'en route'.

Confidence Course: This course is now a permanent fixture at the camp site and students are encouraged to attempt the skills, which, when they have done them, they get a great deal of satisfaction from.

After dinner each evening the students were kept busy with evening activities. These involved competitive and non-competitive exercises from which the students learnt social and survival skills.

Those who went on the camps learnt to interact with their fellow students on a less formalised level. The form class has to learn to work as a team and realise that making an effort becomes more important than success or failure.

Comments from the Campers: "The camp progressed over five days with everyone enjoying themselves, and doing their share of duties. When the last day came there were mixed feelings about going home."

"On the first day our cabin had to make sure we knew what to rio in a bush walk. Katrina, our prefect, pretended she had a sore ankle and we had to know how to handle the situation. . . It was a really interesting and worthwhile experience."

"If anyone was to say they were bored they were crazy as the activities like canoeing, tramping, sailing, bushcraft, sports and cooking were fantastic, and tiring." J. Dobbs 3BF "On the whole I think we enjoyed ourselves and third form camps are a good idea." C. Cooper 3VS enjoyed the canoeing most, mind you I got tipped out. SPIRIT OF NEW ZEALAND "A long, long time ago, in a galaxy tar, far away there was 'STAR WARS' and it was a cool film but totally irrelevant to the topic at hand.

The ticket arrived with the brochure, and there it was in my hot little hands.

Ah, those long sunny afternoons lazing on deck sipping refreshing martinis, watching bikini clad lovelies saunter by; then off to the casino for an evening with a mysterious, tall blonde.

A beautiful harbour cruise you Might say but the truth was, swimming, yes swimming but not in the heated pool on deck but around the ""*" boat at 6.00 am (the middle of the night).

Apparently, according to the captain, the main purpose of the voyage was to prove to us that we could get a high out of life without booze and drugs.

Since I had never indulged in either of these I wasn't sure what he meant.

We did almost everything possible for 36 budding young teenagers of the Iwo sexual genders.

I, myself was absolutely Shot scared of heights before the cruise, and I still am. But there was something that made me want to climb top the top of the rigging and out onto the yards. This impulse was soon shut down once I was up there. Up there, there is nothing but wind and a swaying ship below you and a little Colson up top cursing everybody responsible for his being there. I hated it, but everyday I went back up.

THE AQUA PASS LIFESAVING PROGRAMME The swimming course wasn't at all easy. It involved at least two hours training after school every Wednesday. All training was done at To Park Swimming Pool which wasn't that good when we had to stand arc waiting for someone to finish their activities.

One of the main themes is teamwork, and everybody has a turn at being the leader. Some coped, others didn't and I was absolutely LOST. I didn't know the front from the top from the underneath side, so when captain said "Stuart, raise the Mizzen Gaff". I said "Say what?". He said, The Mizzen Gaff". "Oh shot, quick man haul that rope, it'll do". "Not that boy, you idiot".

We were doing an Aqua Pass, swim and survive programme, wh contained six levels to pass. It started from the Junior swim and then th was pre-requisite to the Bronze Medallion which was the next level up This Aqua Pass course was quite a new programme, in fact we were first to complete it. Our group contained five people and they were Michel Powell, Tina Hughes, Darren Andrew, Anthony Lambert and myself.

Its the best thing that ever happened to me in my life and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

The course was quite difficult and different from any other swimming cou at times it was a little embarrassing too. We had to swim quite consider lengths fully clothed which was quite difficult and also tiring. We also h to obtain the 'huddle' position which usually ended up with the person the middle being 'drowned'.

Overall the course was enjoyable and fun and not to mention interest We learned a lot about lifesaving and luckily, I know what your think about, but no, we didn't have to practise our C.P.R. on our fellow to mates. And after all that training I'm glad to say everyone passed the course.

WINTER TRAINING Through the winter, the life-saving group have been keeping up their training. Mainly it has been the three people which are going for their 'Bronze Medallion' award which they will be going for in the summer. These people are Yvonne Van Baardwijk, Emma Jeffrey and Christine Newing.

The lifesaving course teaches you how to cope with many situations which could occur in life. We are taught how to handle ourselves and others when things occur, also resuscitation and various methods on how to tow people back to shore, We deal with situations which could occur on sea or on land.

The life saving group has to put in a lot of hard work but we have a lot of fun as well.

Drama has increased its following in yet another memorable year at Manurewaa High School. Term one saw "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams, ably performed by a unique cast - this must surely be the most ambitious piece as yet tackled by the school, Audiences responded enthusiastically to the presentation of this serious play, complemented by innovative staging and design.

camps are taxing abut rewarding; they polish and perfect the production while binding the actors into a cohesive unit.

Participation in school plays and musicals has become a prestigeous activity during the past few years; students sacrifice many other activities in order to devote the time required to reach an extremely high standard; the actors are enthusiastic and committed. Most of the work is done in lunchtimes, after school and at weekends byt a regular fixture has now become the intensive 3 day rehearsal camp in the later stages of preparation. These

Hardly had the set been struck on "Streetcar" when auditions were taking place for "Sheik, Rattle and Roll", a contemporary musical which incorporated fantasy, Hollywood stereotypes, legends and one-liner sendups. Approximately 60 students were involved in acting, singing and playing musical instruments under the directions of Mrs Oates and Mrs James The dream of. having to turn crowds away from a school production came true in term 2!

The rewards for the students and the overwhelming number of teachers now involved are great - as was evidenced by the large numbers who auditioned for both the term one and term two productions.

"Long ago in a fabled land" (Well, Term Two at Manurewa High School actually) where the lights beamed down on a pink cardboard palace, where the acting was bad and the singing worse ...

It was not an easy task to select a cast of 43 out of 90 who tried out, but after listening to various rugby songs, nursery rhymes, speeches and poems, from the aspiring singers (?) and actors a workable cast was chosen.

We spent 3 days on Drama Camp at Willow Park, Eastern Beach. During this time we worked extremely hard to refine our acting and singing skills, so much so that some of us got very little sleep.

Opening night arrived, and from there on everything ran relatively smoothly apart from a few hitches eg: broken crystal balls, misplaced scenery and props, and other little 'additions' to the performance. The words 'Where do I come from?' have taken on a new meaning for the cast.

The eighteenth day of August was fine and sunny as the first group of form boys took off from the starting line. Some were serious and o just ambled along, laughing and carrying on.

The course took them through paddocks churned up by cow's feet, al narrow paths, via roads and over styles. A true cross-country.

From the keen and competent participants in the School Athletics As the end drew near strides were lengthened. For some the torture Competitions, a team of approximately 70 student athletes was selceted soon coming to an end, of "I'm going to beat him/her". tar the Manukau Secondary Schools' Athletics Competition.

Gathered around the finish line were mass numbers of rosey, red 18 and 20 March. the Manurewa High School team competed in all the glowing cheeks, running about asking the same old question, "Where track and field events offered. Mr S Vause and Miss A Briggs supervised the team and their comments to the staff and school on their return were that the most outstanding performance of all had come from Suzanne Estall. She was the only competitior from Manurewa High School to be selected, as a result of her fine performances, to go as part of the Manukau team to the North Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championships, where the competition was fierce and she was unplaced in her events. HEADING FOR THE TOP 15 year old Susie Estall is a star athlete. On the 20th of March at Manukau Athletic Championships, Massey Park, Papakura, she won 100m, 200m, 100m hurdles, high jump and was second in the long jump.

Susie runs for fun but a few years ago she started training with a who helped her to develop her skills and to stay at the top. Sometimes really feels like giving up because of all the homework and commitments which 'bog her down' but she copes and is rewarded by efforts.

Susie went to National Athletic Championships this year and last year went and came third in the long jump which is a great feat. She was once a gymnast but had to choose between this and running as it clashed.

Susie has a great future looking her straight in the eye and she intends fulfil this and hopes to one day represent New Zealand in internati. competition.

Orienteering A fairly quiet season for Manurewa High School. Efforts to get a group to attend the Summer Series events at the beginning of the year were hampered by the absence of transport for some pupils, however this problem should be overcome next year now that the school has purchased a minibus.

Two teams were entered for the Auckland Secondary Schools Championship at Setts Farm, Mangere. The Boys team, consisting of Daniel Mattison, Chris Steptoe and Neville Phillips were placed 18th (out of 28 teams) with Neville recording the 9th fastest time on his course.

The Girls team were pl. vs 12th (out of 22 teams), and consisted of Katrina Amira, Santa Males, Ju a McKinnon and Dawn Adams. Katrina recorded the 5th fastest time on course.

Probably the most active mamber is now Neville Phillips who has joined an Auckland Club, and regularly attends Sunday competitions. He has attended a Junior Training Camp, and is enrolled for a week long training camp in the Christmas holidays.

The school orienteering is organised by Mrs J. Dalton, a keen orienteer who travelled to Australia in the August holidays this year with the New Zealand Orienteering team as Team Manager and competitor.

TRIATHLON March 3 was the date of the first of the Wareham's Triathlons and a group of enthusiastic students from Manurewa High School participated. The event was held at Bucklands Beach and was a gruelling sport consisting of an 800 metre swim off the beach, a 21 kilometre bicycle ride and a 6 kilometre run.

At the beginning, eager swimmers entered the water shoulder to shoulder.

Lachlan Marshall was the first Manurewa High School student out of the water to his bicycle.

The 50 minute cycle ride soon saw the enthusiasm of the mass of swimmers reduced to an exhausted line, but the mountain run was still to come. The finished at Pohutukawa Park, Eastern Beach. Lee Gunn was the first Manurewa High School student to finish the triathlon in a time of one hour and twenty one minutes. He was 37th overall.

Race 2 was held at Long Bay. The experience of Eastern Beach had warned the triathletes of what to expect and all competitors improved their performances and placings.

The conditions and format of the events were similar to those at Eastern Beach. The Junior boys were most impressive in their placing as they all came in in the top half of the field.

In the third event, held on Wednesday 16th April. the Manurewa High School Students once again improved on previous performances. The water was very cold this time and the numbers competing had increased to 240.

Likewise the standard of performance had improved, and this was oted by the national champion, Rick Wells who handed out the prizes.

Lee Gunn was again the best performer. He placed 18th in his class and 32nd overall. Sally Sharp was the first junior girl home. Along with Steven Dennis she also won a spot prize.

The most promising performer is Justin Brown, who, still in the third form, looks set to become our best school triathlete.

WATERPOLO 'A' TEAM The commencement of this year's waterpolo season brought with it s and promotion, to our boys' A' waterpolo team. After a strenuously terribly difficult competition round within the South Auckland sw arenas, the team's skill, determination, courage, friendly atmo strength, humour, honour, high spirits and overall perfection bro into the lights of higher esteem and into the Auckland 'A' Championships (Wow! Neat! Excellent!)

With promoption came heavy training schedules. (Hey look Frank, sharing the pool with Westlake Girls O0000h La La!) mounting petr transfer charges, interfamily transport hassles (Mum can I have the again!) and total dedication. Our specialised 'import' coach, Pi Longbottom Jr., was ever-ready to assist in tactical approaches to intricate plan of attack (git that ..... ball in the net/hit that "").

How could we, with such extensive preparation, have gone wrong. managed to set many new records (most goals... against in one . . in one competition, most players sent off and best fouls (Our coach was again an endless geyser of knowledge and experience)).

Top performances are noted for: 'Frank' - resident sub-coach and fouling expert Liam - eager rookie of the year Peter - bird-watcher .. ratings recorder (goalie) Matthew - rubber togs and catwalk king and goalscorer extraordinaire (also New Zealand rep.)

'Lachie' - Stamina Man . . a triathlon leftover J.L.B. - Mr Expletive, the team motivator All in all a great year was had by the whole team.

SECOND XI CRICKET Again it has been a pleasure to take the second eleven cricket team keen squad of fourteen young men tried to emulate the magnili performance of our national side.

Craig Pope did a good job as captain. He always thought ahead in game and during practice sessions. Robed and Derek's agressive bawl together with Craig's swing and Kahu's accuracy usually had the op in trouble.

Papakura was demolished and good results obtained in all our matches except against Waiuku. Perhaps we had become compl against easier opposition, the batting collapsed against some very ace bowling and we were defeated rather easily. Never mind there is a another season and this very young side will be there again this and perhaps we can turn that result around.

JUNIOR BOYS BASKETBALL Manurewa High had a very successful year, winning all but 2 of our games and finishing 2nd overall in the Manukau Secondary Schools Competition.

In the final game of the season we won an exciting game against James Cook by 38 points to 33.

Captain of the team wasJohn Mager. He had an excellent season controlling the games well and organising the players on the court. John and Carl Sitiene were our two ball carrier*. Carl was an expert on the fast break and scored a lot of points from lay-ups.

Naenae Tipelu was a real work horse. A strong rebounder and a very aggressive player. He was our top point scorer over the season.

Paul Thompson was our No. 1 rebounder, outjumping most of his opponents and making the fast breaks possible.

Chris Ikitule and Terence Fairhurst were experienced rebounders. Both helped with the dribbling and were good in the one on one plays.

Gavin Fryer and Peter Marshall got better as the season went on. They gained in confidence and made valuable contributions with their strong rebounding.

Paul Barry was the fast and aggressive player, always hasseling opponents into mistakes. Scored a lot of points throughout the season.

Jason Caulter, Ace Pourewa and Joshua were very enthusiastic team members. They learnt a lot throughout the season and were always there to encourage their team members.

Wayne Milner was the most improved player on the team. He worked hard on all his skills and finished the season as one of the top players.

All this couldn't have happened without the help of our coach MR GRBIN. Thanks from all the players,

SENIOR BOYS BASKETBALL Nickname - The Get Fresh Crew Our senior basketball team made a lot of progress during the season, even though we lost a good number of our games. Winning was not the only reason why we went to play however, we wanted to have a lot of fun and play a good clean game.

Our main shooter was Big John. He played excellently and hardly missed as shot from 20-30 feet. The rest of our squad was Steven Tui, Paul Filipo and Alan Singsam.

M.H,S, BADMINTON TEAM

We finished 5th in the Manukau Competition so that wasn't too bad an effort, The highlight of our year was the trip to Matamata College. We played our best game of the season against them and beat them by 20 points.

We are hoping that next year we will have the same team with perhaps a few new players and we also hope that we will have just as much fun as this year. Our thanks to MR GRBIN for helping us throughout the year.

The Manurewa High School Badminton had an extremely successful yea.

The team consisted of Roseanne Hosken, Annette Chitty, Jacqui That'. and Stacy Sanderson making up the Senior Girls team. Louise Clark, Arf Salmon, Nicola Chitty and Kim Newton played for the Junior Girls II Senior Boys team consisted of Craig Parkes. Murray Salmon, Peter Hi', and Dean Griffith. The Junior Boys team was lead by Andrew Rink Gaven Fry, Karl Todd and Bret McQuarrie.

The Counties Secondary Schools interclub competition had a Slag with the withdrawal of Wesley College. Atter some very hard fought the Senior Boys, Senior Girls, and the Junior Girls won the Secondary Schools Interclub. The Junior Boys came a very close run to Rosehill College.

Manurewa High School Badminton team also entered the Nal Secondary Schools Tournament. This consisted of a play off at P Badminton Hall in which the school team won the honour of repres Counties in the Auckland playoff. Unfortunately the Auckland Se teams proved too strong for our teams participation in the national As manager of the school team I was very impressed with the a teams reliability, sportmanship and professional approach to the am looking forward to an equally exciting season next year. The Bandminton team practices in the main gym Friday lunchtimes.

BOYS HOCKEY 1986

GIRLS 1ST XI HOCKEY

We fielded three teams this year. Mr. Andreae coached the C Team, who had a difficult season through lack of experienced players. The boys played with determination, scoring seven goals to twenty five against.

The B Team, coached by Mr Bargh, lost some of the best players to the A Team part-way through the season, but played some good games. The toughest was against Wesley College 1st Eleven, when we lost six to zero.

Overall we scored ten goals to twenty against to end up fourth in the competition.

The A Team lost one experienced player early in the season, but played several exciting matches to end the competition third, with sixteen goals for and eighteen against.

In the August holidays the team played in the N.Z.S.S.H.A. Tournament for the India Shield. We were beaten only by Whangarei, the runner-up, to gain third place in our pool and ninth equal out of the twenty teams competing. The team thanks David Bargh for his excellent coaching.

BOYS HOCKEY 1ST XI The Girls 1st XI hockey team faced a difficult challenge this season promotion into the Auckland Open A Grade. The first team they met was the winner of this grade last year - Epsom Girls Grammar. Manurewa managed to hold them to 5-0 at half time and even scored against them in the second half to give a final score of 5-1 to Epsom.

This was the high standard of play they were to face for the entire season.

Although games against other top teams such as Diocesan and St Cuthberts ended in high scoring losses, the team improved immensely managing close scores against Papatoetoe, Onehunga and Otahuhu and beating Tamaki. The eventual placement was seventh out of eight.

Although the season was not a successfful one in terms of points, it was certainly a success as far as individual growth and team improvement was concemed. The team received many compliments from other coaches for This year began with 4 new players and a new coach. The first pre-season their impressive style of play, especially in the mid field, and for their team game was a friendly against James Cook which was won 2-1 followed by work and sportsmanship. For a young, fairly inexperienced team this was a 3-1 win over Papakura. The tournament games results were a draw 1-1 with Wanganue, and 7-0 win over Selwyn and a 0-0 scoreline with Macleans. To reach the quarterfinals we had to beat the much fancied Whangarei Boys side by went down 2-0. After these games we beat Kelston Boys 2-0 and then the play-off for 9th and 10th position against Tokoroa High was abandoned with the score at 2-2 after some aggravated play.

The year has been a difficult but most enjoyable experience with the august holidays tournament showing the sides real class. Thanks go to David Bergh for giving his time up to coach us; Mr Bargh as our manger and all parents who helped with transport or billiting over the year. The side had a good future with many fine young players.

GIRLS' HOCKEY SECOND XI An enthusiastic band of Form Four and Form Three students, this group practised hard and improved play over the season. Entered in the Open C Grade, they played girls much older than themselves and did not win many games. Under Captain, Karen Verheul and coach Mrs Weatherly, skills and co-operation developed well. The defence was always strong particularly Tanya Jackson (goalie), Sumeko Ross and Joanne Wrigley (backs). Postition play was a problem in the half line but Karen Verheul, Lynne Weatherley and Claire Farrelley could be relied on to tackle and clear. Newcomers to the game, Sacha Robertson, Fleur Stavely and Karyn Thompson showed promise. Rochelle Booth, Vanessa Olsson and Suzanne Agnew showed skill and versatility.

We look forward to good hockey next season.

1ST XV REPORT The season started early in an attempt to turn a bunch of spotty young boys into a lean, mean, fighting machine. This was unsuccessful as attendance at these trainings was often disappointing. It wasn't until the team tracksuits were issued that we started to look and play like true rugby men.

After numerous pre season matches against often older, and larger more experienced teams, grading began. We had by now got our act together and were playing some good footle. Out of 6 games we won 4. The highlight being a 4-3 win over St Stephens 2nd XV. This game did however leave us with many injuries ranging from broken collarbones to soiled undies. (those guys are men).

This season we had a great asset; our cheerleaders, they had numerous catchy little cheers, plus were a great distraction to the other team.

During the middle of the season we were lucky to be visited by an Australian team (South Port High School). We were told they were big, we told them we were big, we lied, they didn't. We had a very successful 3 days with a trip to Waiwera, a welcome and hangi from the school cultural group, a dance and of course a game. The game was played in abismal conditions, which helped us greatly as they spent most of the time shivering. The team played one of their best games but this and the weather wasn't enough and we went down narrowly to the well drilled Aussies.

Following closely to the tearful departure of our Australian friends the (Hughs and Cossar) Cup Challenge against James Cook. again, (something which became quite common in the second r0 The season ended with a triplo Rotorua. This helped to boost team (It's amazing how much of a bond can form between guys that are ink pellets at each others heads.

UNDER 17 RUGBY TEAM The Under 17 Rugby Team improved greatly as the season prog knish fourth in the competition out of eight teams. We were well

Highlights were the last two games of the season which were close and hard games — a 6-0 win over Wesley College and a 1 over Pukekohe High School. We finished the season with a b Parakai Hot Pools.

CHEERS REWA! Cheers at a high school rugby match often come in all shapes and This season the Manurewa High School First XV not only h evergrowing support of their public behind them, but also the prof fine tuned backing of a squad of 12 cheerleaders.

Led and coached by American Exchange student Darlene Meyer, the began practices in late February. Darlene, who was with us until July, respected among the girls for her knowledge, experience and a cheerleading. Practices were tough and arduous yet such preparati necessary to constantly bring the girls up to the extremely high eta of fitness and expertise they have achieved. Such standards have I many eyes.

4A NETBALL The season started off on a high stream with all team members year with a new captain to the team; Rachel Wheeler. This year has moulded together very well on and off the court giving support and encouragement. I personally found them enthusiastically to learn new things about the game.

For the Manukau Secondary School Competition the team did exce well by winning the 4th Form A grade and the Senior B grade In they played against old time rivals James Cook and won narrowly Extra time was taken to determine an outright winner. The girls pi hard and thoughtfully until the last whistle and I was proud of them it didn't finish there, straight after the 4th form final, the Senora final was played against Wesley College who had players twice as them. Although the girls were suffering from blisters and aching lee still had that determination to collect another trophy and the end r a deserved one winning 23-22!

This season must rank as one of the most successful in the schools history. 1 It was not perhaps the most successful season for the girls First XI soccer In the years to come, we will, hopefully, with the growth of experit team. Yet, the enthusiasm of a very keen, young learn and a new coach skills, and knowledge of the game, develop and build up a very strong were extremely pleasing qualities. soccer squad.

Our games on Wednesday afternoons may not have been extremely successful or highly competitive, but, generally were a lot of fun and at times a good laugh. The team also travelled to Matamata for the sports trip; enjoying a successful game of soccer, a nice lunch and a hot swim on the way home. We look forward to many more trips of this nature in the future.

TABLE TENNIS

Though table tennis has not had a high profile within the school, there has been a small core of dedicated players who participated in several competitions throughout the year. Ralph Lenses, Thomas Webb, Mark Hill and Simi Tipilu played each Friday night of term 2 in the Auckland Association tournament.

The Counties Secondary School's Tournament was held at the Papakura Y.M.C.A. in July. Four of the fifteen teams entered were from our school.

Our Number 1 team (Tony Easton, Jeremy Bradshaw, Matthew Sexton, and John sexton) made it to the final and successfully won the Kirk Shield.

The Number 2 team of A. Bradshaw, R. Easton, S. Buffet and D. Bestram also made the final - a line effort for both teams.

With this title behind them Manurewa High was invited to enter the North Island Secondary Schools Tournament. A good field of twelve entered, coming from all over the North Island. Manurewa High experienced varying successes with our top team finishing in fourth after narrowly loosing 5-6 in the semi-finals to last years National Secondary Schools Champions, Whangarei Boys High School.

Next year we hope to see a larger number of people playing this sport, both at school and in local school tournaments.

BOYS SQUASH TEAM

This year we entered a team in the Senior Auckland Competition.Borne of our opponents had a big advantage over us because they have squash courts at their school and their experience told in the end. Many of our team however have gone and joined the local club and by the end of the season we had all improved our games. Our most successful player was Linsdsey Davy. He tested all of his opponents and had 2 good wins throughout the season. Paul Barry, Michael Chitar and John Nelson also had 1 win each. Chris Kirk has the best court sense of all our team and with a little more experience will become a very good player. What we need now is plenty of Club play over the summer months and we will approach next season with renewed confidence.

Our trip to Matamata College was the highlight of our season. We lost against them but had a lot of fun.

TENNIS Tennis is in a 'boom time' in this school. The number of teams in Saturday competitions has doubled and there is always much competition for use of the courts.

TOP HOUSE One English period we were asked to create a poster for Top House. This was the beginning of the year_ The day of Top House came very quickly and we all rushed around that morning finding out what house we were in and getting changed into togs or P.E gear.

The track and field activities reanged from rolling a tyre to sack races doubles. A lot of cheers from all of the houses made people jump or roll or hop faster, I'm sure.

Then onto the pool. One of the favourite races there, was the shoulder race which favoured taller couples. Some forgot to obey the rules and regulations. I don't think anybody was in the right category.

At the end of the final race Heiberg came out winners.
