STAFF NOTES At the end of last year five staff members left us: Mr Toye, from the Technical Department, after 24 years service to School; Mrs Dean, from the English Department; Mrs Douglas, from the French Department; Mrs Gray, from the Art department; Mr R Thornton left from the Mathematics Deparrnent to take up challenge of the business world in assisting Commodore Computer To replace these staff members and to accommodate the increasi roll, appointments were made at the beginning of Term I this year: Mr C Barber, in the Mathematics Department; Miss L Berry, in the English Department; Mrs R Chan, in the English Department; Mr M Houlahan, in the English Department; Mrs K McIntyre, in the Art Department; Miss R Neighbour, in Music/English Departments; Mr C Van Kralingen, in Geography/Social Studies Department; Mr I Watson, in the Technical Department; Mr N Whalen, in the Accounting/Economics Department.

During Term I Mr Murdoch joined the staff as a reliever to assist in I Science Department. To accommodate extra classes, Mr N Dowd joined the English Department as part-time teacher, and Mr A Writ joined the Art Department. During the term Mr Murdoch left to take a teaching position at Auckland Grammar and at the end of the to Miss L Moore, from the Commerce Department went on leave absence for the remainder of the year. At the commencement of Te II Mrs L Dulieu joined the staff in the Commerce Department to take' place of Miss Moore for the remainder of the year. During the term, t of our part-time teachers left to take up other duties: Mr Dowden inl English Department was replaced by Mrs G Allen; Mr Wright in the Department was replaced by Mr A Johnston.

At the end of Term II Mr R Hoare, Physics and Science, left to to up the challenge of teaching at Opononi Area School. Mr Hoare h been a member of the staff for many years and made a valual contribution in his subject field and in the maintenance of audio-vis facilities around the school. At the commencement of Term Ill Mi Hallsworth joined the staff to replace Mr Hoare as Senior Phys teacher. Mr Hallsworth came to us from Tamaki College.

Mr Robertson joined the Science Department as a short-te reliever to assist in the teaching of Physics, Chemistry and Science To those staff members who left during the year and to those who leave at the end of this year, we thank you for your contributions wt you were with us and wish you every success in the future.

Visit by Hone Tuwhare The warmth and talent of New Zealand poet Hone Tuwhare was evident at his visit to Manurewa High School.

The poet spent about an hour and a half at the school reading his poems to senior pupils who had studied the poetry of Hone Tuwhare during the year.

He expressed delight at being welcomed in Maori by English teacher Mr W. Yardley and he praised the culture group under the guidance of Mrs. L. Halliburton.

The group presented a waiata of welcome and the poet was touched by the effort the school had gone to to make him welcome.

It may have been appropriate with the day being wet and windy that many of his peoms dealt with rain. What was clear was the dislike for the 'horror bomb' and a respect for natural things such as rain, earth and people.

The 61-year-old poet rippled the words to the appreciative audience until he felt it was time to ask the students to read their own works. A number of seniors appreciated the guidance given in oral presentation.

Hone Tuwhare paused in his poetry reading and told the gathering to read as much as possible. He said it was important to gain control of the English language.

"I have a hunger for reading of all types" he said "That's what you should do - read as much as you can - especially in the area of good literature," The poet said his father was keen for him to learn English as a child so he began English study by reading the bible.

"We need to master the English language but don't abandon your own culture. You can be bi-lingual as this opens doors into other cultures. If I had the opportunity I would learn Latin. To me it is not a dead language but rather a root language."

"I have been struggling with German" he added. "It's a tough slog for me, you know, as I only got up to form two at school."

That may have been the case but there was little doubt that the poet held the student's attention throughout his visit.

The students' listened attentively as he mentioned that writing was not a 'sissy' thing to do. He encouraged all to write down their feelings and experiences and encouraged the young women to write.

At the end of the readings, Hone Tuwhare was presented with a selection of pottery by the head of English at Manurewa High, Mr. L. W. Marr.

With Hone Tuwhare was Mrs Dawn Kendall, a freelance writer and photographer. She is also chairperson of the Mangere Community and Cultural Centre 6

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE During this year Manurewa High School's roll has exceeded 1400 and our estimate for 1985 is approximately 1450. It is gratifying to realise that the School is providing the education that parents in the community seem to require for their sons and daughters. The roll growth has meant a re-structuring of the School, particularly in the senior administrative positions, with the addition of an Associate Principal and two Deputy Principals. Also extra minor positions of responsibility have been allocated which have enabled us to cope with the breadth and complexity of a school of this size.

The staff of the School this year have continued to establish standards, tone and goals for their pupils, and t thank them for the work done in all areas of school life this year. Their efforts, both in and out of the classroom, have been much appreciated.

The Department of Education has again been most supportive in assisting with the development of many new building projects to keep pace with the roll growth. Work on a permanent Cebus Art Suite has begun and a second Gymnasium should be constructed very soon.

To meet the demands of the broadening educational programme, to be implemented in 1985, a Horticultural Unit has been installed, a Computer Room completely upgraded and a Drama/Video/Film Room has been installed and equipped.

Pupil involvement this year has been very strong. This has been a tremendous year for participation by pupils in the widest possible variety of service, sporting and cultural codes, in the growth and development of the orchestra, the drama, the cultural group - to name but a few.

Public speaking reached an all-time high this year with Ken Milne winning the Senior section of the national Korimako Speech Finals. As a result, the School is now the proud holder of a magnificent trophy.

This year a very hard-working committee, comprised of Board, Parent-Teachers' Association and Past Pupils, has been planning and organising the forthcoming celebrations for the Silver Jubilee of the School, to be held on 8, 9, 10 March next year. The School is looking forward to participating in these celebrations and assisting in any way they can.

There are many challenges ahead for the School as we move through the '80s, but I have the utmost confidence in the ability of the pupils of the School in acquiring positive attitudes and high standards of social behaviour.

To all leaving school, our best wishes in the years ahead.

THE ATOMIC BLAST The announcement is nearing the end The bomb is coming, quicker as it falls It will hit, damage and destruction It has hit, civilisation is wiped out.

Earthquakes shatter remaining buildings Screams of terror of the suffering The shelters, how did those inside go on?

Total destruction, death heartbreaking sight because of the NUCLEAR BOMB. Jason K (6/2)

SURVIVAL We were in the shelter, all 16 of us. Only 10 could remain and the votes for who should leave had just been counted. The list of 'rejects' was read out. I was one of them.

They said we would never survive. The others believed them but I, with my broken arm, did not. "The quicker I leave, the more time I will have before the fallout precipitates" I thought. I emerged from the crowded shelter into a desert of death. I was surrounded by nothing.

The few trees that stood were bare, I knew that I would have to get underground to prevent receiving a dose of radiation. I scanned my intermediate surroundings. Behind me was a manhole. I removed the covering and descended into the man-made caves below. I was in a floodwater pipe, about six foot in diameter. A small channel of water flowed feebly in the centre. The wind had been blowing south, I had to move north to avoid the path of the fallout. I began my journey to survival.

Through the grimey caverns I tramped for hours on end. My arm had not hindered my hasty advance but thirst was beginning to become immense. I wasn't willing to take the risk of drinking the water below me, I didn't know if the radiation had contaminated it. I calculated that I had travelled about 10 miles north. There had been very few corners in the never-ending maze of pipes and I had taken as few turnings as possible to help eliminate the chance of losing all sense of direction. I rounded a sharp bend and in the distance I could see a pinhole of light.

In my now dazed state, I half ran, and half stumbled towards the speck of life. Slowly it enlarged and slowly my pace quickened. The adrenalin was flowing. Above me I could hear a rumbling but I still continued until I had escaped, emerging into a trench. The light contrast was overwhelming; I scrambled up the earth walls on either side and found myself beside the nothern highway. There were many north bound cars; there weren't any going south. A large truck stopped beside me.

It was crowded with people, many with burns and gashes, I clambered inside, welcoming the sight of other people. The truck was going north to avoid any radiation. I had survived.

As one of the rejects of the shelter describes how he managed to survive Atter hearing of my rejection from one shelter, I went on my way to other regions in the city, to find other groups who could accommodate me. The reasons for my rejection were that I was too old to be of any use and I had no skills.

So I continued to trudge my way through the city streets only to find to my dismay all the shelters full.

My situation was becoming desperate so I finally took refuge in a deserted basement of a modern brick villa. It had an atmosphere of a place that had been left suddenly; there was a room stocked up with food and drink; there were cups left on the bench, and womens winter clothing filled the closet. The walls in the bedroom were covered with a dull brown wallpaper and floor was laid with a thick pile carpet. It was obviously fitted out as a shelter in case of a bomb, but could not have passed the stringent tests or met the requirements laid down by Defence. Still, I thought, it is better than nothing.

I shut and sealed all the white painted windows and locked the front doors firmly. I then took some food, water, a radio and reading material into the bedroom-bathroom area, where I was destined to remain until the all-clear signal was to sound on a radio frequency.

Here I stayed for the whole fourteen days: locked in this room, reading, eating and sleeping. Just moments after the bomb hit. I felt the basement shake as the floor above collapsed. The plaster and small chunks of the roof of the bedroom clattered around me like hailstones, as I sat with my heart in my mouth waiting for the whole building to fall as flat as a pancake, but it held, and after fourteen days I emerged out of my shelter into a world of mass destruction.

My Views on the Nuclear Issue Nuclear. A frightening horrifying issue to be dealt with today. What does the word conjure up for you? Armageddon perhaps? Possibly nuclear energy? Technological research? Probably military protection and insurance from foreign powers.

Recently I had the opportunity to become involved in a nuclear issue study at our local High School, entering the discussions eager, yet highly ignorant of the subject but emerging a very aware, concerned citizen.

The time has come for all those opposed to the nuclear power threat to stand up and be counted against this terrifying menace to society in the interests of humanity and life itself.

If you know nothing of the nuclear issue, make it your business to find out. As a member of the human race it is your solemn duty and obligation to protect your family, your friends, your neighbours, your city, your country, your world from the hazards and futile destruction nuclear power brings in its wake.

Daily reports flood our newspapers, radios and television sets on the military strategic arms race, peace talks, arms limitation talks, counter talks, limited nuclear war, radiation poisoning, nuclear power plant accidents. Remember Three Mile Island? Mururoa Atoll?

The list is endless.

Our Government allows U.S.A. Tridents into our ports and harbours, exposing New Zealand as a potential enemy and obvious missile target in times of future nuclear war.

What about our rights?

Our children are constantly subjected to great emotional stress as a result of the nuclear issue. Do they not have the right to grow up in a nuclear-free South Pacific?

I am afraid for our future. Is nuclear power essential to the survival of the human race, or is it the means to the end?

The anti-nuclear movement is a way for us to end this madness and insanity forever before it is too late. I read a poem of Carl Sandburg's as a child, Let us not deprive future generations of the privilege.

The little girl saw her first troop parade and asked: "What are those?"

"Soldiers" "What are soldiers:" "They are for (nuclear) war. They fight and each tries to kill as many of the other side as he can."

The little girl held still and studied.

"Do you know .... I know something?"

"Yes, what is it you know?"

"Sometime they'll give a (nuclear) war and nobody will come."

an ALTERNATIVE to Nuclear War Hey! All you nuclear protestors out there, will you please stop driving us to global thermo-nuclear war? Do you know that if you continue to protest you drive away our only 'armed' friends, the US, and prompt World War III, or an invasion by the USSR: Picture the headlines 'Nuclear Protestors Drove us to WW3'. The USSR, once it knows that it has the edge in world power, will feel free to attack anyone. Want proof? The senseless invasion of Afghanistan and the slaughtering of thousands of innocent victims a few years ago should do; or reinvading Poland because the Poles did not want Communism. Do you honestly think that these wholesale slaughterers of human life are going to respect a nice little 'ARA nuclear tree zone' imposed by some numbskull councillors. 'Oh yeah, we've killed millions of people but we'll leave that little bit alone I because that's a N-free zone and we aren't allowed to do that: the ARA said so." That sounds a bit more ridiculous doesn't it. The 'commos' know that all these protestors will force the US to cut back on expenditure and so they back the protest movement, but, do you ever hear of protestors in Russia? All the leaders want is media attention and coverage; most of them were involved in the 'tour' as well. Communisms' aim is to take over the world; Marx said that his aim was to 'convert' the world, yet we are telling ourselves "let's make ourselves neutral and maybe they will forget about us." (Look at how Switzerland was pushed around in WW2) As the protestors say themselves, "Just ignoring a problem will not make it go away."

We are telling the United States (our only adequate protection), to shove all of the aid they have given us. and go back to Washington. We can protect ourselves, we say, with our eight or so Mach 9 supersonic Skyhawks. 0 subs, aircraft carriers and a few popguns and tugboats.

We can easily defend ourselves against a several-million-strong Russian army with the latest weapons, while we tarry with equipment which hasn't been used since the last war. Who poured in millions of dollars (which we have never had to repay) to stop the Japanese offensive? (remember that the Japanese had actually made attacks on the Australian mainland) and built a temporary hospital, which we have made into a permanent one (Milddlemore). The protestors say that the US is a bloodthirsty war-machine. Remember that it was only with reluctance that the States entered WW1 and they only became involved in WW2 because of the attack on Pearl Harbour. And remember also, that the only time an atomic weapon has been used for an offensive purpose it has been a peacemaker; if it had not been used we could all be talking Japanese; it saved many thousands more lives than it destroyed because the war would have continued.

But, you say, the deterrent Theory will not work. It is working and has been since WW2. That's a good 40 years without a slip: pretty good record wouldn't you say? Want a modern day example? Now about the recent shooting down of a S. Korean airliner. an incident involving both Superpowers, and was there a full-scale N-war? It was little more than a skirmish, the deterrent Theory worked and came through with flying colours. No-one wants wholesale destruction of the innocent. if you say that all the money could be better spent on the feeding of the hungry of the world (far more have died of starvation than of N-war) why don't you go out and protest about that.

When we have WW3 and 1 billion of us get maimed, killed or wasted by incineration we'll have all the No-nukers to thank.

P.S. Some of you may wonder why I wrote this., Part of it is because when you're on detention you don't have much to think about so you think about what people are saying (and get more detentions for arguing). Also the dean said that I should quit making other people's lives a misery and do something for the human race, or he'd expel me.

Some ultimatum. But probably the greatest motivation came from the many people I know who disapprove of N-war and protest blindly, not realising that they are helping the Comma's.

EDITORIAL National Pride National pride (or nationalism) can be described as 'that principle compounded of past traditions, present interests and future aspirations, which gives to people a sense of organic unity and separates it from the rest of mankind.' National pride has been responsible for many changes in recent history - some have been for the worse. Narrow-mindedness and intolerance can be a result.

However, where a country is split by different allegiances there seems no hope of national cohesion. The conflict in Ireland and the Middle East are two good examples.

There are two major types of national expression. The conflicts mentioned above, are examples of divisive and destructive nationalism because they have resulted in the partition of their respective lands and in lasting conflict. Another example, is the kind of forced nationalism displayed by Adolf Hitler and his followers in the 1930's. It resulted in a world war which destroyed many people who had been forced to live under the Nazi regime.

The other type of national expression is creative nationalism. As the term would imply, it creates new nations from smaller states or groups, whose peoples share common needs.

Creative Nationalism may be applied to the many symbols we use to create patriotic stirrings, which in turn make us proud of our country.

This type of national expression is both favourable and unfavourable.

It is favourable because it creates pride in one's country, but it is unfavourable if that pride is allowed to give place to narrow-minded prejudice.

Perhaps there are people living in New Zealand who are so proud of their country that they either cannot or will not believe that the outside world may have something better to offer them. On the other hand, there may be people who are just content to flash patriotic symbols before their eyes from time to time. Some of these people cannot even make the effort to learn the words of their national song. To them, patriotism is something to be avoided as much as possible because they find it boring and unexciting. When it is to their immediate advantage they can feign patriotism. This opinion may not be as distorted as it seems.

Here in New Zealand we seem to be too busy discussing racial, economic and social problems, searching for solutions not to bother about pride in our nation as a whole. Perhaps if we put aside our differences and considered our position as a nation, we might find that we are considerably more fortunate than many of our fellows in other lands. We have a stable, democratic government. Most of us enjoy good health, through benefits provided by our welfare state. Unlike our brothers and sisters in India and Africa, we live in relatively comfortable, clean surroundings and most of us never go hungry.

We need a sense of true national pride, along with an open-minded attitude to the outside world. After all, national pride (if expressed correctly) can be a very beneficial thing despite what the cynics say.

Buzzwords have been with us for centuries, and there is good reason for them. They define an 'in' group. They add interest and vitality to a language. Some words will become legitamised and others will fade away as fads. Some are created by giving a dramatic new meaning to existing words while others are invented by accident of design. It is amazing how a word will spread; there are few words confined to Manurewa High alone for instance.

Buzzwords do not originate only in high schools but rather in all cohesive groups to place them apart from general society. A buzzword acts as a password or a way to identify another group member. It gives exclusiveness and is a choice way of putting down the wrinklies.

HOW COULD THEY? The funeral was over. My mother was gone, to remain only in my memory. It was as I sat remembering happy days, days of warmth and carefree abandon, that the relatives arrived from everywhere: Wellington, Northland, Otara. Like bees to a honey pot they came. chortling and chuckling at an inner, private joke. A joke I could not share.

As if I did not know why they were there! Like vultures on a rock they sat, watching, waiting. worrying over what was in the will for them. Why should they care as my feelings of loss welled up, threatening to strangle me. Catching me unawares, their uncaring attitude, their greed, forced me into a well of despondency from which I could not rise.

How could they?

If only my mother knew, surely she would not have left these .... creatures, these .... scavengers a cent of her well-earned wealth?

G1RLS'FIRST ELEVEN SOCCER 1984

Girls' First Eleven Soccer to Australia Our girls' soccer team travelled to Australia on August 11, 1984 by the 'magic of flight - , and settled into the hotel in King's Cross 4 hours later. That afternoon we had our first encounter with the underground and that night there was a time for sightseeing - and what a sight! King's Cross was quite an education!

On Sunday morning we encountered the underground, with it's double-decker trains once again. Quite a few hours were spent travelling back and forth on these trains, intentionally and at other times unintentionally.

The rest of our stay was spent sight-seeing at the zoo, the Rocks, Sydney Opera House, and the Harbour Bridge - all the 'touristy' things.

On Tuesday 14th, we went by train to Newcastle, which is 2 hours from Sydney. We were met at the station by our first billets. Kotara High School. The next day at 9.30 a.m. we had our first game of soccer in Australia. and won 2-0.

Our next billets were at Cardiff High school, they beat us 2-3, which shows that even the best of teams have their off-days (we should have won the game).

The following day. Cardiff High had a gala day, where we entered a team into their 'Anything Goes' competition. We reached the final but missed out on winning by the mere fact that we were competing against the reigning champions. made up of 6 girls and 6 boys. This competition is similar to a Top House competition, we did things such as going over a slippery mat, under a net which had been spread over mud and over various other hurdles.

Saturday morning saw the team checking into the Great Northern Hotel in Newcastle, where we spent the weekend. The first night there, another soccer team arrived. The team was a boys' team from Hillcrest High School in Hamilton.

On Sunday we travelled to Old Sydney Town, where we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves watching re-enactments of the pioneer period by settlers, convicts and soldiers. We all decided that the best show was the 'Punch and Judy' show - even though it was quite 'violent'.

Atter all the excitement, it was back to being billeted on Monday morning. this time at Gateshead High School. We soon discovered that this school had won more trophies and medals for their soccer playing than they had any use for, so we were determined to put up a good fight. At last we were on the field, playing our game of soccer and we won 3-2. A very satisfying result.

That night a dance was held at the school, and at the conclusion, (10.30p.m.) we were taken back to the Great Northern Hotel. Here we waited for 2 a. m. to come round so we could catch a luxury coach up to Balling. just south of the Queensland border. This was a 'most interesting' nine hour journey. Atter arriving in Ballina, we found we had successfully missed our connecting bus by two minutes. Another bus was hired which then took us to Lismore, where we met our awaiting billets from Richmond River High School.

We played them at ten the next morning, and won 5-0. The whole team put in a line effort for this successful win, even though we were being videoed and watched in front of the whole school.

After the game we had a bar-b-que and then managed to find a huge swimming pool in the township which, although still shut, managed to provide us with a very cooling swim.

The next day, Friday 24th, we went to the school and a bus picked us up and took us to Surfers' Paradise, for a well earned rest and holiday.

Friday and Saturday were spent shopping around Surfers: Saturday night was a time for celebration - Mr Beuning's 100th birthday. We had a cake with 100 candles, which was very much alight.

On Sunday we went to Seaworld where some of us went on the Corkscrew 15 times. This is a type of roller coaster; it goes upsidedown, twirls and loops. An unreal ride! We also went on the roller coaster. bumper boats, paddle boats, the pirate ship and watched the ski and dolphin shows; but the Corkscrew beat the lot!

On Monday we travelled to Brisbane, staying in a motel, (or should I say morgue as some of the residents were quite unlively). We did our last-minute shopping and some local sightseeing, cuddling koalas and feeding kangaroos.

The fateful day, the one we all had dreaded, finally arrived. It was lime to go home - back to N.Z.!

Even though it had to end, the trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all members of the touring party.

Thanks must go to Mr. Beuning for the organization and effort he put into the fundraising activities and coaching the team and all the parents who assisted in fund raising activities. Without Mr. Beuning there would not have been a trip. Thanks to Miss Fraser for her company on the trip too. and the parents who accompanied us; Mrs Wilson, Mrs Longley and Mr. and Mrs Robins.

This year's team consisted of seven members of last year's first eleven and due to the necessity of having a full squad for fundraising activities, the rest of the team was chosen at the beginning of the first term.

The two young third formers in the learn, Vanessa Caudwell and Yvette Watson showed continued progress throughout the season and both represented their team well. Claudia Huber, a fifth former, also made improvements through the season and is showing great promise for future years. our season in the Southern Zone competition was a good one.

(Although we lost the competition to Rosehill College, who were later second in the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Competition). With only one loss in the competition after two rounds of games, and drawing against the team which came second in New Zealand, the team was not disspirited and made their way to Australia in a confident frame of mind.

The regular, and high turnouts to practices both on Friday mornings at 7.30 and Tuesday afternoons, strengthened the teams litness and morale.

Once again Denise Longley was top scorer for the season, though Sheryl Brown came a close second.

The team as a whole played with true sportsmanship, and along with Mr. Beuning's skillful coaching, the season was a success. Once again much thanks must go to Mr Beuning for putting so much time and effort into the training of the team.

The 6th Grade Rugby Team The 6th grade rugby team was slow to start. Only three people turned up to the first practice. For the first game, against Rosehill, we had a bare fifteen players. We were losing 14-0 at half time, but a determined effort in the second half brought the final score to 14-14. A delighted team and coach left the field, confident of future victories.

Victories there were! 34-8 against Pukekohe, 70-0 against Wesley, 44-0 against St. Stephens B, 66-0 against Papakura, and so on The best game was undoubtedly the match against Papakura when 16 tees were scored. Team work was the "pass word" in this game, with the forwards giving the backs a feast of the ball, the inside backs feeding the ball out along the back line. and the outside backs racing down the line.

After 12 games, St. Stephens A was the only team whom we had not beaten and we faced them in the final. Two experienced and determined teams played hard but St. Stephens deserved their 16.8 win. Undismayed the Manurewa 6th grade team vowed to play as a team next year and WIN!!

Of the players themselves. Lee Gunn the captain showed sound rugby sense and scored numerous tries from the back of the scrum.

Ben Tokorahi (who together with Wati Erai made the Counties Rep. Team) set a fine example with his ferocious tackling and elusive running. Thomas Thompson was renowned for his one handed passes, Blair Parker and Shane Mokoraka were renowned for - dare I say it - their "Maori side-stepping". The other players also distinguished themselves in various ways.

Senior Girls Cricket Team 1984

Senior Netball 1984 This year the netball season has been a great success and fun to all those involved. Although there was some doubt that there was to be a senior netball team, dedication and enthusiasm showed by the girls and our coach Miss Wilkinson, saw the team through and as a result, the team was to play it's first games of the season at the Manurewa Netball Courts. The girls played hard and we all did our best playing in a very competitive grade but were not successful in the first halt of the netball season.

However, by giving up our lunchtimes and raining hard, we managed to achieve something through building up our skills and our team spirit and we came 'Runners Up' in the 1984 Coca Cola Tournament held in Papakura. Teams out there were very strong and competitive and we had to really sweat to reach the top of our grade.

In the final, we played Aorere College and this game was a very tight and tiring game as the score became neck and neck in the last five minutes of the game. Determination by our team put us ahead by a couple of goals, but Aorere capitalised on our waste of ball to make them narrow winners with t5-14. Maybe we can get 'em next year round.

We all enjoyed our games and thank our 3rd and 4th form netball teams for their support on the side-line.

On behalf of our senior netball team, we would like to thank Miss Wilkinson for her time, encouragement on the side-line and for being a cheerful and busy coach.

The senior girls' cricket team enjoyed a successful season this year with only one loss to blacken their record, thanks to the tolerance of their coach Mr. Hunter.

The fact that the girls lost only one game just goes to show how much effort was put into the practices, for in the first few games any number of runs above one was miraculous. The defensive shot was the one most useful shot, mastered by everyone by the time the games had finished.

The skill and techniques of this team became common knowledge to others as time went by and quite a number of schools either defaulted or pulled out due to 'weather conditions' - just an excuse! We all decided that the teams were too scared to play us.

Not only was it our skill that won many of the games, but it was also the cunning hand signals, (often so discreet that we could not discern what was meant), by the umpire/coach that got us out of trouble in a variety of situations. For the upcoming season the team has decided that a code is in order so that any sly finger waving can be acknowledged by us all as a movement in-field or a change in bowler.

Another facet to this team was a strange creature which sat in a froglike pose throughout most of the game; this was the 'wicket keeper'. In the many games played, the keeper stopped a fair few balls, but the person behind her seemed to stop a fair few more.

The skill of bowlers such as Megan Wilson, Denise Longley, and Sheryl Brown, was much appreciated by the team along with the efforts of the stand-in bowlers Lisa Johnson (who proved more and more accurate as the season went on), and Claire Robins, who was also a steady run scorer.

The rest of the team deserves to be acknowledged for their enthusiasm shown in turn-outs to practices, and in their increasing ability to function as a team on the field and off, (clearly evident when the girls' cricket teams went on a successful day trip down to Te Aroha).

Thanks must go to Mr. Hunter as coach and to all the people who supported the team in one way or another throughout the season.

2nd Girls Cricket The team, captained by Sally Fox, has shown a vast improvement in the past season and ended well by beating James Cook by a considerable margin. This was due to a good team effort with Sally, Tania and Marietta giving outstanding performances. Comprising mostly of fourth formers and a few fifths we have settled down into a team pattern that doesn't always win us games, but keeps the whole team enjoying each match.

With a trip to Te Aroha at the end of the first term which resulted in a win, we have had our confidence boosted and are hoping for more wins this season. Coached by Mrs Chan, we have looked forward to each game this season with more enthusiasm. Thanks go to Mrs Chan and Miss Bowen for coaching us.

Sports Council The M.H.S. Sports Council is a student body where students have a say in matters concerned with sports. It places special emphasis on lunch-time activities and in ensuring equipment is kept at a satisfactory level. The council also has a say in the financial aspects of sports equipment. It was decided this year to limit membership to 17 pupils, with Tony Bracefield as Chairperson and Susan Goldstiver as Secretary.

We have accomplished many events this year including the organisation of a Past versus Present Pupils sports day. The result was a draw. All games were played in high spirits and were thoroughly enjoyed. Special thanks must go to Gary Larson and to the 'tea-girls' who provided refreshments throughout the day.

This year has seen a dramatic improvement in the quality of the school's equipment. The rolling of the hockey fields has now become a regular event; the cricket nets have been relocated to a more suitable area. It has also been proposed that the athletic track be marked earlier on in the year.

Next year will see the introduction of 'Blues' - a badge awarded for excellence on the sports field.

The Council is also in the midst of organising the 'Sports Personality of the Year Dinner' - always a social highlight and huge success.

Dare I say it, but this year's Sports Council has probably been one of the best ever. Special thanks must go to Mr Grbin and to Tony Bracefield for their dedication and of course to all the other 16 members who have helped to make the year the success it has been. Good luck to next years council.

FIRST ELEVEN GIRLS HOCKEY 1984 After a rather unsuccessful beginning to the season, with four losses, the team began to show their great potential by winning a total of five games and drawing three.

One of the major events of the season was a trip to Whakatane where we were billeted by Trident High School for two days. Rain delayed the start by two hours on the Saturday. We finally started at 11.00 and played six games in our section, and came runner up. We then played in the semi-finals where we lost 2.0. Thanks for the parental support on this occassion.

The end of the season was highlighted by a relegation match, to determine whether we would go up a grade in the competition, but we drew the first match and lost the replay, so we are still in the same grade.

We all enjoyed the season and wish to thank those who played.

The old man wanders through the park, his wrinkled brown hands in his ripped pockets, and the wragged hem hanging down from his moth-eaten trousers.

He watches the young children playing on the swings, with fond memories of his own youth of fishing with his father in the summer and eating treacle pudding.

Well. I'm sick and old now, in a rest home; well, Mats what they cf them, but I think its just a polite way of saying. "This is your last stop It s really just a place they put you to wait until you die, My kids reckon I'm too sick for them to look after. Excuses, excuse A bit of time is all I ask. Give me a bed and my necessities and I'm rigt but no, not to them. Devoted years of my life to those kids. now look me. That's gratitude for you.

And those doctors. go around spouting lots of long, medical word saying they'll fix this and that. when there's nothing they can do. Tr result will be the same - death. They say I need professional care. Soc I'll need psychiatric care if I'm left in this dump much longer.

I need someone to talk to. My room-mate isn't all there, if you knc what I mean - senile. There are a few down the hall but even a few them are starting to go and its hard for them to get to me wi rheumatism and such. I wish I wasn't immobilised, stuck in bed.

Haven't been out in the fresh air and sun ever since my stroke ar fall.

I wish they'd just let me die, just let me slip into a nice deep sleep. I know no more pain and suffering. Sometimes, I can feel my mir slipping. I'd rather die than go like that.

I swear that the undertaker is following me. Sometimes I feel if I tui around I'll see him there. Oh, it only they'd let me die, I'd be out everybody's hair, no bother to any of them.

Here comes the doctor. Guess I'd better put on a cheerful face; f doesn't see too many in this place, poor man.

His body is distorted and bony. His face is as wrinkled as a pruneand his eyes, yes, they have seen many things: The two world wars, the modernisation of communication, automobiles, yes many things has this old man seen.

His back is now crooked as he has had 80 years of hard life in bringing up his family and going through the Depression. His wife is now gone, and he sits in the lounge smoking his pipe and dreaming about the good old days. For him they were the best years of his life. He sees people his age frequently at the stroke club. Together they sit and play draughts or chess and talk about things in days gone by.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAMME MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL This programme is designed for our more able students and was introduced in 1984. The aim of the advanced placement programme is to accelerate the work, not the pupil, and to lay the foundations for success in the external examinations - particularly Bursary and Scholarship at Seventh Form level. This stimulation to learning will lessen the liklihood of boredom and offer a meaningful challenge.

During the Fourth Form year the students will be accelerated to School Certificate level in English and Mathematics and be offered the opportunity to sit the School Certificate examination in those subjects.

At the Fifth Form level the pupils undertake a six-subject course made up as follows: 1. English at either University Exntrance or School Certificate level.

2. Mathematics at either University Entrance or School Certificate level.

3. Science at School Certificate level plus three other School Certificate subjects.

During the Sixth Form year the students are expected to take subjects as follows: 1. English at either Bursary level or University Entrance level.

2. Mathematics at either Bursary or University Entrance level.

3. Plus three other Sixth Form subjects.

In the Seventh Form year the students are expected to enter the University Scholarship examinations. they choose five subjects, none of which are compulsory, but in choosing English or Mathematics, or both they are placed in a separate class designed specifically to follow the course geared to scholarship.

The overall programme is carefully monitored by form teachers, tutors and Deans assigned to this task and present indications are that it is achieving its desired aims.

L.A.D 'Do their chips' An unexpected opportunity for school group involvement in industry came about for Learning Adjustment and Living Skills classes during term 2. A local firm had discovered a fault in production which had to be put right quickly; the offer was made to some of our pupils who would gain work experience by being involved in the rectification of the fault.

It took 3 days (6 hours each) for teams of 20-24 students to unpack thousands of potato chips into large bags and send them back to be reprocessed. It seemed an endless task but after it was all over everyone agreed that it was a good way to find out what has to be done in a big food processing factory.

The school benefited from a substantial donation from the firm.

Eating potato chips will never be the same again.

What's happening to English these days?

Throughout the 1970's a lively movement, The New English labus Committee' conducted research, produced resources, courses and meetings for teachers of English in the Form 1 to 51e As a result of careful monitoring and assessment, a final documen recognised in March 1983 - a 'Statement of Aims'. This is the firs series of guidelines for teachers.

The thinking behind the 'new' programme follows the recogr processes by which language is learned - moving, listening, vim speaking, reading, writing and shaping. These terms incorporat wide range of activities. There is still room for 'basics' however; tl are dealt with in context. However, educational research indicates 'correct' grammar, usage, idiom and spelling are learned with r word recognition and reading. When errors persist into senior clas multiplication of 'remedial' exercises can prove to be counter-pro tive.

When emphasis is placed on reading and writing incorporated w comprehensive literature course in all classes, genuine sin' responses to books. short stories, plays and poetry are encourag rather than memorised notes from critical sources or 'study guic Equally important are active participation in moving through scene a play, discussing issues presented in stories, being able to use vi: media to show understanding of themes, imagery and symbols wl are part of literature and communication.

Another major section of the English course includes the stud media (newspapers, radio, T.V., cinema and advertising).

1985 ushers in a revised prescription for School Certificate. With of University Entrance being removed from 6th form and grei weighting being placed on 'Sixth Form Certificate', there should b greater co-ordination through Intermediate and Secondary classe: preparation for this.

Experience has shown over the years that candidates who ht developed the above range of 'modes' are achieving sound results e are better prepared for the literary topics and language courses of and 7th form.

There are moves, too, to replace the present 'Auckland Engli examinations and Certificate (mainly sat by non-S.C. Candidates) a an Award recognised by the Department of Education in whi teachers will note credits for accomplishments in the main branches the course.

In June of this year the Parent-Teacher Association convened evening meeting to inform parents of the above transformation whi has been progressing during the 70's and 80's. Mr Trevor Dobbin of tl English Department at Auckland Secondary Teachers' College discu sed issues raised by a video he screened featuring English prograr mes at four Auckland Colleges. Lively debate followed. There were di plays of pupil's recent work.

It would be immensely valuable for students, parents and teachers meet occasionally and appreciate what may be achieved through th wider concept of 'English'.

Manurewa High School Boys First Hockey XI

2nd Eleven Girls Hockey The second eleven girls hockey got off to a good start with a team of enthusiastic girls - ranging from 3rd to 5th formers. The season included many 'ups and downs'. (the highlight being our victory over James Cook) with our goaly, Tina Filipo, spending more time on the ground than on her feet (but nevertheless saving goals).

With after school practices twice a week we gradually began to work together as a learn and a number of players greatly improved their hockey skills throughout the season.

Thanks go to parents for their support and helping with transport. We can all look forward to an exciting hockey season next year. Special thanks to Miss Bowen for giving up her time to coach and encourage the team..

Senior Girls' Indoor Basketball 1984 The Senior Girls' Indoor Basketball Team consisted of eight players: P. Byrnes (Cap.), S. losefa, G. Patterson, P. Randell, P. Byrnes. S. Atuau, T. Palmer and S. Rountree.

The girls were all relatively new to the game and after a fairly shaky start to the season they gained some of the confidence and experience required to play good indoor basketball.

We had several 'ring-ins' during the season; Narelle an Australian Exchange Student, gave the team a boost in the second round of the competition, and Kaye Run played several excellent games for the team on occasions when we found ourselves short.

We would like to thank all those parents and teachers who helped us over the season; especially Mr. Palmer who supported us in every match we played and Mrs Bolton and Mrs. Randall who persevered and provided transport throughout the season K. Marshall (Coach)

It was unfortunate that the first two games of our season ended in drawn games as this may have resulted in a different final placing. The team finished third in the School's competition. During the season, the team had 5 wins. 3 draws, and 2 losses, scoring 37 goals for, and 14 against. While there were no stars in the team, individual players at times played extremely well and their attitude and spoffmanship were outstanding.

During the August holidays the team was entered in the India Shield Tournament, which was held at Avondale College and Mt. Roskill Grammar School.

The spirit and determination of the team was incredible, especially in one game where, after trailing 0-3 early in the second half, they drew the game 3-3 thus resulting in the team being second in their section.

The quarter-final game against Hillcrest, was another game of good hockey and this created much interest, with the boys showing maturity in fighting back from being 0-3 down to finish the game at 3-3. Extra time saw both teams score and the game was finally decided on penalty strokes with Hillcrest winning. Our final ranking for the tournament was 5th out of 20 teams, a very credible result.

The team represented their school and themselves during the year with pride, and they were a pleasure to coach.

Indoor Basketball - Junior Boys The junior boys' team for 1984 had been the most successful team the school has had for quite some years. Not only did they win the Manukau Southern Zone Championships, by beating their old rivals Rosehill in the finals (38-28), but they also beat Hillary College in the Grand Finals scoring 32 to Hillary's 28. At the end of the season the team was unbeaten.

The Squad is made up of the following players:Ora John (Captain) Quietly spoken but leads by example. A top rebounder with very good shooting skills. An excellent defensive player in the key position of centre.

Anthony Poto. The number one ball carrier. Very skilful with both hands, one of the top goal scorers.

Bergham Kurewha. Good ball carrier and expert defender. Quickest player on the court when executing a fast break.

Dean Tahapehi. A tireless player who has the skills to play in any position. Sets goals up well.

Joe Phillips. An all-rounder who can both score and defend with ease.

One of the main rebounders.

Pablo SubrItsky. Our top rebounder, good on attack and defense.

Developed good shooting skills.

Heka Pulefolau. Got better with every game. Became a good defender and reliable shooter.

Wayne Stratton. A ball carrier whose confidence grew as the season progressed., Became a good defender with much improved shooting skills.

James Katipa. Developed into a good rebounder and was always steady and reliable on attack.

Boys 1st XI Soccer The beginning of the season, brought about some fine efforts, including a 2-0 win over James Cook High School. Despite this we were placed in an only average grade to play off for the league. However, being placed in this grade gave us hopes of winning. Injuries and other commitments put our hopes further away. By the end of the season we had been left well down the table.

In spite of our set-backs, we enjoyed the season's football with Paul Moor in Goal; Anthony De Vries, Mark Scott, Darren Edwards and Norman Kraut all playing well in the backs. Ian Smith, Clive Richardson and Michael Tribble playing in the halts, while fronting the attack, Paul Fowler, Fritz Tuaa and Bruce Page all made fine efforts.

Reserves, who made an impression on the team were Dean and Danny Hatton - with Danny Hatton having to withdraw because of injury.

This year's effort was also a 100% improvement on last year's, so next year we should have the basis for a good team.

Art Trip A busload of 6th and 7th formers converged on the Auckle Gallery, to witness an exhibition "Anxious Images", a collection Zealand artists' interpretations of stress, war, despair and the I life. A wide range of styles, media, methods and techniqt expressed anxiety and anger from the screaming cry of 'Black the bizzare pencil drawings of garish household objects by Sydell, the lavish paintwork and controlled inkwork all challenge look and THINK! Over all an inspiring and enlightening experience.

ART DEPARTMENT

Art Camp at Waharau The Waharau Outdoor Education Centre on the Firth of Thames, made a fitting place for the Manurewa High School fifth form art camp, earlier this year.

The general aim of such a camp is to involve the young artists in direct contact with their subject matter: the environment of bush clad hills, high ground, distant views of the impressive Coromandel peninsula and the boulder clay beaches of the Kaiaua area.

Over a period of three days, our group of 40 students was able to come to grips with some of the problems in landscape drawing and painting. Our aim was to enrich the student's work by making them more aware of their surroundings, dealing with problems of composition and the development of pictorial images - we looked closely at the inter-relationship of sky, sea and land: The light and shade effects caused by dense bush and the involved patterns of interlocking leaf forms: our students worked on subjects as varied as stream beds and flowing water, to the subtleties of misty rain across the hills, to the billowing smoke of a burnoff fire across the water.

Our sketching and drawing was coupled with plenty of walking and tramping across the land, getting to know the feel of the land and experience the steep climb of the hills backing the camp, and the unfolding panoramic view.

The experience of living and working together has also paid dividends amongst the students as they now relate to each other and can freely discuss their work from having a common experience.

Our studio/classroom development from the initial sketch work has developed to finished drawing, painting and prints, all based on the landforms experienced at Waharau. The art camp has become an important integral part of the 4th and 5th form art programmes and it is hoped to continue this programme in the future.

This has been another frantically busy year for the Art depart Mrs. McIntyre joined our staff and her delightful wit, cheerfulneE serious involvement has stimulated many pupils to develop exc work as the year progressed.

Our first major project was the 5th form art camp, at Waharau followed up on our 4th form camp last year in October. The days o sketching, drawing and awareness of the environment have paic the resulting ideas and images produced. Mr. Kilgour, Mrs. Sutht and Mrs. McIntyre feel that the spin-off effects of working with landscape and experiencing, first hand, the total experience of land, sea and sky have paid dividends to those students who wen experience of working on art work all day is tremendously inspirin that in itself is valuable to senior art students.

Some of our students had work submitted to the secondary s art exhibition run each year in August by the Auckland Star. .

INSTEP

DANCE GROUP

by Julie Howes Manurewa High School "Instep" dance group contributed to the school's term one drama production, "Masquers". With three weeks notice, the seventeen girls with teachers Miss A. Briggs and Miss V. Bold, spent many hours during and after school preparing the dances initially choreographed by Melanie Tregudha and her mother.

The dances consisted of a comical version of "Putting on the Ritz", a medieval court dance, and an eerie witches' rendezvous.

On the 28th of May, a selection of the group will put on a performance for the Altriston Country Club, with the earnings going to the dance group's funds for new music tapes and costumes.

Towards the end of the year the dance group will perform for numerous Primary and Intermediate schools, but until then, will be contented to practise hard and dance for the school assemblies.

The Abbey dictionary defines it as "the fore part of the upper side the foot near its junction with the leg" Manurewa High School defir it as the dance group. Expertly conducted by Miss Briggs and Miss B "Instep" has been a great success. Members of the group such as Ft Luxton, Robyn Taylor and Melanie Tregurtha have also contribute great deal to the group.

Formed at the beginning of the year the dance group has a fa heavy schedule right through three terms. In the beginning there w light (and also the headaches of working out routines for the to plays). We managed but only after a lot of hard work and effort. T result was great - but this was not the end (nowhere near it as c muscles were soon to find out!).

The Rotary Club, at which Mr.Thomson is a member, held a functii and we were to be the floor show. After a rough start and with a rath stubborn sound system the evening went well and was much praise by members of the club.

We received a well-deserved cheque which is going towards a no portable sound system. Mr. Thomson then decided that the scho should have the privilege of our talents, much to the protests of som of the members who thought it most embarassing. All went well axon{ for a few forgotten steps.

Our next function was at the Presbyterian Church on Russell Roa where a charity evening for the Hospice was held.

The recent plays also required the skills of "Instep" members Prostitutes and convicts are unlikely twosomes, but fun all the same.

"Limbs". the acclaimed New Zealand troupe visited our school tt perform and were well received. Five of the members of the dance group spent the first week of the August holidays learning routines anc gaining valuable experience.

The fashion parade was the next item on our list, rehearsals were something that were only barely endured, but as they say, 'practice makes perfect' - and sore muscles!

The year has been fun and all the members have worked hard and received much praise. On behalf of the dance group, I would like to thank everyone for the encouragement and enthusiasm shown to us. A special thanks must go to Miss Briggs and Miss Bold for putting so much time and effort into the group; the results have been most satisfying.

DRAMA This year many enthusiastic students and teachers built on the tradition re-established in the last two years in drama.

'The Masquers' in term one (a group of one act plays accompanied by music, dance, and pageantry on a medieval theme) involved over one hundred students, when makeup teams, lighting and sound technicians and set builders were included.

In term two, the ambitious 'Beggars Opera' involved a similar number but of course there was a good deal more rehearsal and coordination required for this oroduction.

The first production ran for three nights and the second for 6, both attracting appreciative audiences. In term three (a busy time for seniors with exams) two short plays linked thematically were presented: 'The Quiz' and 'Living In'. These were performed by form three and form four students for a brief season in order to preserve the continuity of drama in the school.

1985 promises to be an exciting year with the introduction of a form three option course in drama, utilizing a new drama and video film unit established in what was the senior common room. This room will be used by both classes and performers for a more intimate presentation of mini-productions.

Several visits from drama groups to the school also added interest in 1984. Margaret Blair once again entertained a group of junior students with her 'The Old Woman and Her Cat' followed by a oroup from Theatre Corporate who performed 'Peace Play' to an enthusiastic and responsive cross-section of the school. Thirdly we had Playspace Theatre who did what has become a well-known piece nationally: 'Wierd People Playing Normal Games'. This was extremely entertaining and the workshop held for students in the musical was a real bonus.

Several theatre trips were organised for stall and students, including a visit to the Independent Theatre's production of 'Romeo and Juliet' in Term II.

THE BEGGARS OPERA This year's second term production of John Gay's "The Beggar's Opera" will surely live in the minds of the many people involved for a long time to come.

This was my first involvement in school Drama, and I found the workload and dedication needed for such an event to be - putting it mildly overwhelming.

Rehearsals began at the beginning of the term with daily lunch-time practices, but as the final nights grew closer, extended to after school, evenings and eventually weekends.

The production itself was fragmented at first with everybody learning very different roles and it was not until the last week, when the set, fighting, sound, music and acting were finally pieced together that I realized what an arduous task we had all undertaken_ My respect and thanks must surely go to Mrs Oates who actually kept the play heading in the right direction with her confident production talent and Miss Neighbour who accepted the challenge of turning us into singers; though I am sure that the chorus did her proud on the final night and made the work seem worthwhile. My thanks and admiration must also go to the entire cast who pulled together to keep us all as one, when tempers became strained and patience seemed to be a forgotton word. I hope that in years to come I will be able to look back to the cast and consider them all close friends who will think of me as the same..

As expected, audience involvement proved to be the "icing on the cake" for the production and this became very evident on the final night when certain members of the cast (no names!) took it into their hands to add new dimensions to the script, though for the life of me I still fail to see the symbolic relevance of a fork, nail-file, and odd-fellow; though I'm sure these things will become clearer as I become older.

Overall, the climax of "The Beggar's Opera" must surely have been the 'farewell party' on the last night and the rowdy tune of "Fill every glass for wine inspires us" will probably haunt me for the rest of my life.

Finally, I again wish to thank every-body involved for making the play so much fun and such a success and although those immortal words " Where's my wench!" seem a long way away now, the memories and souvenirs left to us will hopefully encourage those of you left at school next year and in the years to come into keeping the art of theatre alive in this school. I wish you all the best of luck.

Poets' Visit Manurewa High School students were recently privileged to mee and listen to two of New Zealand's noted poets.

On Friday the 13th of May, sixth and seventh form English student! in the school library, awaited with interest a well-known Nev Zealander, Sam Hunt. The poet entered, dressed characteristically it a wing-collared shirt, tight black trousers and boots. He had an obvious air of self confidence and began with the rendition of some of his works Reciting such poems as "My Father Today" and "Porirua, Friday Night", Sam Hunt revealed his special brand of poetry to all who were present. When he had finished, sixth former Jeanne Payne gave the poet a portrait and a poem she had written, and Head Girl, Kate Hillery presented him with a pottery decanter as a token of thanks from the school.

Seated in the seventh form pavilion on Wednesday, April 180, senior pupils were again honoured to meet another of New Zealand's poets - Elizabeth Smithers. This poet proved to be very amusing as she proceeded to recount to her audience anecdotes of her life and influences on her writing. Everyone learnt a great deal about her poetry, and poetry in general from listening to works such as her • ^des of "Princess" poems. As with Sam Hunt, Elizabeth Smithers presented with pottery as a token of Manurewa High's apprect n.

Senior students undoubtedly benefited from meeting and listeinng to these two New Zealanders and as a result of their visits, gained a greater insight into the world of poetry.

American Field Scholars This year we had two American Field Scholars at Manurewa High School. Jill Hartley comes from Ohio and Becky Greenwood from Oregon, and they were with us for a year. Their appearance in the seventh form was well-received.

As honorary prefects and members of several groups they were active participants in the life of the school. Their sponsor within the school was the Key Club. The group hopes to keep AFS alive in the school as each year we attempt to support the organisation.

Everyone with whom these students came in contact befefited from what they learned about other cultures - and their own. * .4,

My name is Jill Hartley, and I'm an American Field Scholar from Cleveland, Ohio, USA. My first eight months in New Zealand have been both scary and rewarding, emotional yet carefree, intense but passing quickly. Most of all they've been great!

My first knowledge of New Zealand came to me through National Geographic magazines. I have to say that I was a bit worried about coming here because all I had seen were the Maori war dances and the 'painful' process of tatooing. The second article I read told about how some of the South Islanders lived '2,000 miles by water to the nearest town' while, of course, the kids took school by correspondence in between helping dad round up 30,000 sheep! However, I knew I'd cope, given any situation, as this was 'an experience of a lifetime'.

When I arrived, however, I found things to be quite normal. (Whew!!)

There are only very small differences between New Zealand and the part of America I come from. I've come to really love New Zealand in my short stay here. It's really amazing how much difference a year away from home can make to you. No-one can really know until they have done it themselves.

New Zealand as a country is beautiful. It is so far apart from the world's problems and hassles - it's almost a world of it's own. I can't get enough of the mountainous country-side, the gorgeous scenery, and all those 'bloody sheep'.

My dream is to move back here someday. This has definitely been the best year of my life, Your country, New Zealand, will always hold a 'very' special place in my heart.

Thanks to the 7th form especially, you're a 'great' bunch of friends.

Hello, my name is Becky Greenwood. I am an AFS exchange student from Reedsport, Oregon. Reedsport is a small town of 4,200 people, located near the west coast. Although we live near the ocean, we do not swim in it, as it is very cold all year round and also very windy.

In my high school there are only 500 students, so I was quite amazed at the size of M.H.S. Where New Zealand high school students are referred to as 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th formers, U.S. students are labelled; freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. One big difference in the two school systems is the age at which students leave school. In America, very few people leave school before they graduate at the end of their senior year, and they are usually 18 years old. Thus, my senior class consisted of 125 students ....compared to 30 in the 7th form at M.H.S. There is a much wider variety of classes available at high school level, which can be taken during high school years instead of University although it is much easier to graduate, as you do not have to take many difficult subjects if you choose not to.

In America I live on a small farm of 15 acres, where my family raise beef cattle and have an orchard. My father is a pipe fitter at a paper mill, and my mother works in an antique jewellery and coin shop. I have 1 brother, Darrell, who is 18 years old and is now a senior.

Here in New Zealand I have a 16 year old sister, an 18 year old brother and 2 older brothers who live away from home. I've been able to see quite a bit of N.Z. including Coromandel, Rotorua and Tauranga.

In Decmeber, I am looking forward to spending some time in the South Island with the other A. F.S. students. can't believe how fast the time has flown by while I have been here. I only have 2 months more until I return.

ROTARY EXCHANGE I spent term one of this year in Australia living with an Australian family on a Rotary Twin exchange.

I was staying in Leeton, 600 km west of Sydney and 400 km north of Melbourne, with a population of 7000 people (a big difference compared to Manurewa's 45,000) Leeton was in the Murrimbigee Irrigation Area so it was almost exclusively an agricultural region, producing a large percentage of Australia's rice crop.

I was one of 4 people from our school who went to Australia on the exchange; it was a fantastic experience and I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

I lived just as any other kid in Leeton, going to their school and doing 'their thing', (I even learnt how to speak Australian!)

The family I was staying with (the Oaklies) were really great. They took me everywhere, even to Melbourne and Sydney which is a fair distance from Leeton. (Everywhere is a fair distance from Leeton!) The twin exchange means that Kiwi kids live in Australia for the 1st term and then bring back their Australian host to New Zealand with them for the 2nd term.

Many of you would nave met Steven during term II, or at least noticed him (who could miss the Aussie accent) Not a bad guy.

If anyone asked me whether I'd do the exchange again, I'd say 'yes'.

Although times can get rough, everything always comes right. Anyway, what they do to you in Aussie you can always get them back for in New Zealand!

The exchange is about making friends and experiencing a different way of life, while having tonnes of fun at the same time; and that is what I did.

GENERAL STUDIES Ask any teacher what General Studies involves within the school.

They'll say it is an educational time to improve and better our individual ability concerning a hobbie. Then ask a sixth former what it involves and expect anything from amuck around period' to 'cause chaos time', probably be shot when I say that sixth formers are really primary children in disguise, waiting for that 4th period every Wednesday to set teachers' nerves on edge.

To be honest, I never thought about the organisation and time that goes into this one period a week, so that the seniors can enjoy their General Studies Group.

History files say that G.S. (General Studies) was thought up about 68 years back, as even students in that century were restless with school work! But there was not the variety we have now. Mr Kilgour explains how this is really an extension from the 5 subject system. Most would like to see an even wider variety of classes. The subjects don't necessarily have to be limited to within the school grounds but I don't think somehow we could suggest letting seniors loose in Auckland for an hour let alone a day!

Depending on the option taken expenses vary, to pay for materials, i.e. photography paper, macrame etc but in order to use the materials, teachers are in demand to explain the skills and whose to say they'll be around when yee push them to the limit? (wishful thinking).

When you think about it, it is a period for leisure which could lead to job opportunities or just cultivating an enjoyable pastime for when we are at the age of 30 years and 'over the hill'. We would welcome more than one period a week and a wider variety of courses.

HOMAI UNIT Views of a First Year at Manurew High School 1984 is a big year for me, my first year at Manurewa High Sshool a blind student. I had been told a lot about the High School bef came so I knew what to expect. I was, in fact, quite excited a coming here. Things are made easier at Manurewa High School ler and others by the existance of the Resource Room which provides with a base from which to attend classes and a place to go to for with work problems. It is also a place where I have made a lot of friendships, and have had a lot of good times, Things would not h been the same for me this year without the help of the Resource an all it offers.

CAREERS Careers moved into a new office and display area at the start of 1984 and has expanded rapidly to fill the space. The new Rotoscan provided for the careers leaflets became the centre-piece of the display area and has been well-used. (Judged by the thousand or so leaflets that have had to be replaced during the year). The career teachers have continued extending time in the classroom to help pupils at fifth form level prepare for the job market. With the improved layout of the careers area it has been encouraging to see the numbers of sixth and seventh formers who have been able to sort through the material themselves. This has resulted in much better informed pupils, when it comes time to sort out final details of courses or more complicated problems.

The full-scale Careers Evening held in the second term attracted a large number of parents and pupils. It was clearly useful as a starting point for career planning. Because of the encouraging response to this event it will continue to be part of the careers programme.

After last year's success in placing pupils in the Maori Affaris trade training programme it has continued to be an important part of job preparation. Thanks must go to Mr. Chase of the Maori Affairs Department for his enthusiasm in this area.

CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP Our small but faithful group has been active throughout the year in organising lunchtime videos, (thanks to Mr. Voisey) such as 'Jesus of Nazareth' and 'Ben Hur'.

We also had weekly meetings every Thursday where a variety of activities occurred, ranging from gospel singing (when we were privileged to have the musical talents of Peter Laurent to entertain and enlighten us) to videos on creation, and gospel activities in South Africa (again courtesy of Mr. Voisey). Bible studies were held by the various staff members who included Mr. Latif, Mr. Voisey, Mr. Andreae, Mr. Bergh and Mr. Van Kraligen.

There is also an 'outreach' held each year by various Christian organisations and this year the Agape Force showed slides and gave personal testimonies. We hope the group may continue to have as many opportunities as we have had this year.

Anzac (Manurewa) When I was asked to speak at our service my initial reaction was "wow! ME" This swiftly changed to ''Why Me?" - and then panic set in.

For years I've sat in school services, often bored and not really listening. One year in Form 2 I achieved a certain 'star' status - I was chosen to walk the length of the hall carrying a poppy which I ceremoniously placed at the foot of the stage steps. Come to think al it, that's the only one I remember much about.

What if my speech had the same effect on all of you! I had horrible visions of everyone nodding off!

I decided to find out some things about ANZAC Day, so armed with my notebook, and looking important, I asked my 10 year old brother "What does Anzac Day mean to you?' His reply "Poppies and boring speeches!"

My sister's reply to my question was: "Singing 'God save the ' or something, and a day oft school."

I also approached some fellow students, and here are some of their thoughts: Holidays, something to do with the war, poppies for 20c, parades, old men, the RSA, solemn services at school, boring speeches, medals, activists, pacifists' complaints about remembering war!

I could go on, but is this really what ANZAC is supposed to mean to us?

Why do we still remember. I the fact that we've had two world wars something worth remembering? Certainly a lot of people our age don't think so.

Should war ever be remembered - or it we do remember it, shouldn't it be with shame? I guess most New Zealand families have some members who would argue with that.

Ordinary people like you and me tight wars.

They are not very different from the fights we have in the playground both sides have a point of view, both passionately believe they are right. Discussion and talking about the problem have failed to produce a solution.

The men of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps - the Anzacs, were people like you and me, just everyday citizens.

They were loyal and patriotic towards their countries, often frightened at the situation they found themselves in. They had little control over the outcome but they fought bravely and their losses were enormous.

Of course we should remember them. We should remember the sacrifices they made for us. It is too easy to say now - "Oh, that was a long time ago- it is all in the past - Anzac doesn't mean anything to me.

We have a frightening future ahead of us - another world war with nuclear involvement would be a disaster for us all. I hope the politicians of the world have not forgotten people like the men of Anzac - and I hope we never do either.

Anzac day is for just that - remembering our past and reflecting on the future; not for celebrating war, but for honouring peace.

Commonwealth Conference The Auckland Secondary Schools Commonwealth Conference is designed to give students an idea about what Commonwealth is and also to see what the student's general thoughts about the Commonwealth are.

Before the conference actually started, information was sent to the school, telling us that we were to represent Swaziland. (Our first thoughts were 'Where's that?'). They also told us that we were to prepare a 5 minute speech, telling all about Swaziland. This job was delegated to Robert Macready.

The Conference took place at Epsom Teachers College on the 9th of June 1984. It started at 9.00 a.m. (a very early start for a Saturday morning!) and ended at 5.00 p,m. the same day.

The first item on the agenda was an introductory speech welcoming us all, and then came time for the speeches that we had prepared.

Countries were pulled out of a hat and our country's name appeared so lucky Robert got to read his speech ...(l won't say any more about that!). This event took place until 11,30 a.m. with the exciting event of morning tea in between the speeches.

Countries - no longer schools - then formed groups to discuss what, why, how and where they thought the Commonwealth was heading.

These discussions invited personal responses from, individuals and so some heated arguments started. we were then honoured with a visit and speech from Sir David Beattie.

The next item on the agenda was a 3/4 hour break for lunch.

After this, we had a debate, where all the countries joined together this provoked some 'delegates to be', but all in all it was fun.

HORTICULTURE 1984

Environmental Council 1984

In February 1984, this school applied for a grant to establish resources for teaching horticulture in 1985. Subsequently, in April 1984, we received a grant of $10,000. This money has been used so far to build a duralite glasshouse, and frames for a potting area and shadehouse.

Aided by raffle proceeds we hope to purchase all the tools and equipment necessary to begin teaching this very practical and relevant subject next year. We also hope to build raised garden beds, and have power and water reticulation by early 1985.

Interest has been shown by many future pupils who wish to take a Form 3 Horticulture Option in 1985 while we hope to have a Form V School Certificate Horticulture class also.

Enthusiasm has been shown by all members of staff, while particular thanks must go to Biology staff and Mr Thomson for their positive interest, and to Mr McKenzie and his classes for their valuable practical help.

This year has marked an encouraging turning-point. While there i still room for more planting of trees, shrubs and garden plots, th growth of those planted in earlier years has now reached the slag where controlling and cutting back are major tasks for our working bees. It was quite a novel experience for a large group of pupils an' staff one showery Saturday, earlier in the year, to find themselves instead of digging and planting in the accustomed way, having to low up traileHul after another with branches and surplus growth. In ground as extensive as ours though there are always gaps to fill and a numbe of new plantings have been made of ornamental trees such a! cherries. The main driveway borders have been further developed will a new rosebed and camellias, the extension of the garden plot: immediately to rear of the hall which include mature shrubs am colourful foliage.

Plans are going ahead for the development of murals and wort completed by senior pupils in 1983 is to be positioned soon.

Next year's Environmental Council will need an equally large working membership, since the continuing expansion of building is bringing with it more landscaped areas to be maintained. The plannec art complex will require major landscaping to tie together the Sank), Studies Block and the buildings to the north of the main block.

TRAMPING CLUB If you were unaware of the tramping club, or think it is a thing with which to hit tramps then read on.

I once overheard an old man with a beard say, "Me and my dog go for a tramp in the woods every morning; the dog loves it - but the tramp gets annoyed." This made me think and I'm glad it doesn't happen often. Tramping is not a sport for the weak and spineless but it rather a nature-loving 'fresh air freak' hairy chested men and women sport. It has enabled me to go places that feel as though human kind has not been there before; no litter, no video machines, no cashftow - no wonder people don't go there.

People shouldn't be put off tramping by words such as 'scroggin', 'bivouac' or'hypothermia'. I would prefer you to linger over the joy, satisfaction and sheer relief one feels surge through cholesterol-free veins rounding the last bend (and sitting down for a well earned cigarette!) or the comfort of the blue sky peeping through the rustling fronds, with nature's own orchestra - the birds - filling your ears with music; the inspiring vistas to least your eyes upon. Your 'vibes' adjust and you harmonise with nature; all is at peace. You've heard of "runners' high" of course ..................

Our original mode of locomotion, toddling along on our own two pins, with some goodies in our pack, can be most rewarding. I have enjoyed many tramps, and I enjoy walking too. It can be extremely rewarding and I recommend it to almost anyone who wants to 'get away from it all'.

6th Form Biology Camp

The tramping club has been active this year with many varied and interesting trips.

The first tramp of the year was to the Pararaha Valley in the Waitakeris, where many pupils and staff took the 'plunge' and swam parts of the track.

There have been two weekend trips this year. The first to the Whatipu-Huia area, where pupils experienced the rugged outdoors in sodden tents, and the second to Moss Creek Hut in the Kaeueranga Valley, (heavy rain, hailstones and knee-deep mud!)

A few pupils were taken for a 3-day tramp in the Pureora Forest in the August holidays, where the podocarp forest is spectacular and wildlife abounds.

by Liz Keen (6/4) The buses arrived and a bunch of enthused biologists were ushered into the main hall munching and were given a run-down of corny instructions before being sent away to develop hypothermia while wading in freezing stream water all afternoon. After a short period of tree time and more lectures, we were given the ultimate punishment of camp food, prepared and cooked by ourselves consisting of string covered in red chunky gunk and cheese.

The first night was full of hideous yells, screams, singing, flashing lights, scrunching stones, midnight munchies, walks and no sleep followed by a run in the morning organised by our local running enthusiast, Mrs. Howard.

The wettest weekend in April was chosen for a double crossing of the Waitakere Ranges. During this, some of the most vivid memories are of the leaky tents, the mosquitoes, and the lumpy custard, found at Mr Parlane's camping section.

A small group enjoyed a visit to the Uruweras with Miss Myers in the August holidays, this outing made the way clear for a trip in early October, to Mt. Ruapehu.

The second day we were let loose to rampage through the bush, counting, measuring and collecting spider webs in our hair while another group rumbled along the beach getting crab-bitten toes and fingers. A difficult night was to follow after more food, punishments and study.

Exhaustion showed in the prominent bags under eyes and after creating more havoc amongst trees, shrubs and greeblies we were set free to pack the chaotic-looking men from the chalets and then our completely bombed-out group of unenthused biologists set off home, sleeping all the way.

Thanks go to to Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Wright, Mr. Andreae and Mr. Parlane, for undergoing the ultimate in survival training.

3RD FORM CAMPS Held during the winter months of the year. the 3rd form camps were again a success, with most third form classes being introduced thoroughly to our Outdoor Education camp at Waharau, in the ARA regional park, in the Hunuas. Only a one-and-a-half hour bus trip away.

Waharau is an ideal place to introduce pupils to new activities; orienteering, tramping, bushcraft and initiative activities.

A typical camp consists of two third forms - that's sixty of them, mean looking tough prefects, and 4 durable staff - preferably third form loving.

Activities include a 3 hour tramp to the top of the ridge, initiative activities with ropes, hoops and fences, plus bushcraft and orienteering. If you think this can tire out 60 thirds in 2 days you are wrong. Other things had to be thought of like a 'blind trail at night" competition, and activities in the lodge before we could get them tired enough to shovel down more food, i.e. supper, and go to bed.

The camps are not for the faint-hearted or the weak-stomached (especially if you actually ate). Although Waharau is not that isolated from civilisation, the surroundings are a little primitive, and the prefects were glad to get their own cabins this year, away from those 'lovable' third form creatures.

On the whole, camps were enjoyed by staff. prefects and 3rd formers some of whom had their first experience of this sort of outdoor life.

6th Form Geography Camp at Waharau The afternoon of Anzac Day wasn't the best time to leave for the sixth form Geography camp at Waharau, but alas this was the time allocated to us, and there was no way we could change it, so we made the best of a bad situation.

Arriving at the camp, we received the usual lecture about finding cabins, and reporting back to the lodge once we had settled in. The moment we arrived back after depositing our gear in our cabins we were presented with our first assignment; which had to be handed in before we left. Everyone was shocked: do you mean we have to work on this camp?

At dinner every 10 seconds the lights decided to go off. This turned out to be an advantage, for at least we didn't have to see what we ate.

Curfew was at 10.00 p.m., or so they told us. It was obvious later on that some people couldn't tell the time; they were threatened to be removed from their cabins and into the teachers' if they didn't behave.

Thursday arrived, and not all of us were bright-eyed and bushy tailed, which was only to be expected. We once again faced a lecture on the day's programme, which was a river study. This involved measuring the. gradient, depth and width of the stream, (which for our purposes we called a river); in places it barely covered our feet, and in others it was up to our waists.

The evening was spent drawing 'pretty pictures' of the river including, scrub, rocks, trees, and the all-important scale.

Curfew was once again forgotten (except by the teachers') with boys jumping out of the windows, girls putting almost everything except themselves into bed; and it was discovered that the teachers had given up for the night.

The camp was a lot of hard work. Thanks must go to the teachers and parents that accompanied us on camp.

Cycling Team Out of fifteen hundred pupils we managed to scrape together four able and keen students for the 'kamakazi mission' of riding for the M.H.S. cycling team this year. The madness consisted of 5.30 am. starts, blustering winter conditions and some dramatic accidental stunt work.

The team, completely self-motivated, trained and raced together to bring surprising results. In the tri-weekly races we managed to keep a consistent fourth place, just narrowly beaten by Auckland Grammar, St. Peter's College, and St. Kentigens. The races consisted of a tenmile course along the water front from Judges Bay to St. Heliers Bay and back. The team's performance improved with each race but unfortunately so did the others and we ended up fourth.

The team's good management and inspiration is attributable to the one-and-a-half prefects who put the learn through its paces.

The team also participated in many long-distance rides (not races) including the Dulux 118km ride, The National Heart Foundation Ride and a five-day North Island Tour.

The team's social events included trips to Miranda Hot Springs, Waiwera Hot Pools with many sessions at the pictures and Rainbows End as well, as a successful evening out.

Next year we hope to compete in the Dulux 7 day race and the Tour de France.

ORIENTEERING This year, the Auckland Secondary Schools' Orienteering Championships were held at Moire Park, Massey, where over thirty schools participated in both girls and boys section.

The 'boys' team finished 8th overall, with excellent times being forwarded by Dale Radford and Jason Kitchener with the following team members not far behind: Greg Moore Andrew Clark Bill Clarkson Andrew Kitchener The 'girls' teams also competed well. Although experience was lacking, this did not deter the girls. This was evident by the performance of Julie McKinnon and Katrina Amiria. All girls showed potential and should do very well in the future. The girls: Kristine Godden Marcina Johnson Haley Armstrong Joanne Clarkeson performed well. Thanks must go to Mr. Girbin and Mr. Kitchener for their involvement, which made the day possible.

Manurewa High Badminton Scene On a cold miserable day during a long and boring form meeting, I began talking with todays' badminton 'megastar', Carmel Clissold. I discovered, by my own ingenuity, that a shuttle-cock and badminton racquet are used in this game.

Badminton, however, is a serious sport with two junior and two senior teams representing Manurewa High in various competitions. It requires a great deal of skill, time and effort as well as sacrifices. This proved worthwhile for the Junior Girls' team who won their section in the Secondary Interclub Competition held on Friday nights. The teams then entered the South Auckland Secondary Schools Competition coming a victorious second place.

The reserves; Chris White, Kenny Lee, Shane Jenkins, Sim Chen, Leeanne Sexton and Phuong Ngo all deserve special recognition, as they were always present at practices, willing to give up lunch-times to help whenever possible.

Roseanne Hoskin, Sean Sanderson, Carmel Clissold and Annette Chitty were selected as Counties Reps. They helped achieve a high standard of sportsmanship within the teams along with other members.

Mrs. Howard's contribution as coach, organiser and supporter gave an incredible strength to all players.

Overall, there was a 100% effort in all games, which certainly showed in the numerous victories.

This certainly throws new light on a sport I used to think was timeconsuming and tedious to watch. Badminton may be the game to make you the school's next sports star.

Te Ropu Maori Christchurch Trip )n Thursday, 9th August, 9 pupils, Mrs Milne and Mrs Halliburton v down to Christchurch for the Maori Speech finals. Ken Milne was iresenting Auckland in the Korimako section. For most of us, flying s a new experience. The view of the mountains was brilliant even ugh some of us had ear trouble.

The first few hours were spent sight-seeing. We climbed the autiful Christchurch Cathedral, walked along the River Avon and laded the shops. At 3.00 p.m:, we were welcomed onto the Rehua arae by our hosts. Karanga filled the air as 40 schools from all over aw Zealand descended to where the 1984 Speech Competitions are officially opened in the Maori tradition. After hours sitting on the arae getting freezing cold, we welcomed the huge feast and itertainment that followed. Later on that evening we were treated to nother welcome at Cashmere High School, where we stayed along 'ith our friends, the boys from Hato Petera College. We slept in the brary and even got some sleep!

The next day it was quite a struggle just getting to the Town Hall. Not wily were we unaccustomed to the one way street system, we also had o put up with Mrs Halliburton's driving and Mrs Milne's navigation.

Nhen we arrived, we sat and listened in total amazement as one speaker after another spoke. Before we knew it, it was Keri's turn to speak. We were all so nervous for her that we could hardly listen. But as soon as she started she had everyone mesmerised. We let our emotions and energies out in our song to support her speech. The warmth and the smiles from the audience made us all very proud of Ken. However, she still had her impromptu speech to go, so we didn't relax yet. Once again she gave a great speech. Then someone remembered we hadn't filled the parking meter again. Too late fortunately parking tickets were cheap in Christchurch.

When the speeches were over for the day, we went back to Cashmere for dinner, then returned that night for a concert at the Town Hall. We did a joint performance with Hato Petera which went down very well, even if Graham didn't know the haka actions.

Next morning, our final day we farewelled our host as Cashmere.

They had certainly treated us very well, and left us with a good impression of South Islanders. At the Town Hall, the Pei Te Hurinui (Senior Maori) section was being held. Then came the results. Last year's winner, Keri, presented the Turi Carroll trophy to this year's winner. Now the moment we were all waiting for: 'The winner of the 1984 Korimako Competition is . . . Ken Milne of Manurewa High School." We were so ecstatic that some of us were even crying.

Although the competition had been tough, she had done well and certainly deserved to win this magnificent trophy.

After congratulations all round, everyone followed back to retur Rehua Marae for another feast and farewells. This was sad as nowanted to leave. However, we still had a few hours left before our fl so we decided to go with Hato Petera to watch St. Stephens Col lose to Te Aute College in the final of the Top Four Secondary Ri competition.

This was a trip that none of us will ever forget. Ken bringing bac magnificent Korimako trophy for our school was the best imaginable.

Congratulations once again Ken, we are all proud of you!

Te Ropu Maori Tihei Mauriora. Tena re koutou katoa 1984 has been a busy year for the Maori Club. We have pi regularly during the year - at lunchtimes and after school_ Atter at these has fluctuated but at the heart of the group has been core of enthusiastic members, encouraged and supported Halliburton. Our thanks to her for her efforts on our behalf.

We have performed at Manawanui's Gala Day, for parenâ&#x20AC;˘ A.G.M. of our Parent Teachers Association, and, a first for u Secondary schools Polynesian Festival at Birkdale College. been involved in welcoming visitors such as the Limbt Company also. In support of our four speech contestants; Hohaia, Dean Tahapehi, James Watene and myself, we pert Massey High School.

The highlight of the year would surely be our recer Christchurch for the finals of the Maori Speech Contests. A was had by all!

Overall, I think everyone involved in Te Ropu Maori f enjoyed themselves - hopefully they'll return next year, become part of this family.

ORCHESTRA 1984 has been a quiet year with a very slow start. On May 1 some members took part in the Annual Manukau Secondary Schools Festival, after numerous all-day practices at various locations. This ' turned out to be enjoyable for both orchestra and choir, especially those who sound talent in the Wesley College representatives.

Mrs Pay. brought a full orchestra together at short notice for a successful Easter Anzac Service and a small, selected group took part in the first term drama production and an excellent performance at assembly.

The orchestra has been lacking in numbers with many seniors leaving, but next year looks promising with new talent and new ideas.

Mrs Pay, and Miss Neighbour have done a good job in trying to build up the numbers and introduce new music. This will provide variation to the music department, and entertainment to the prospective audience.

Thanks go to Mrs Pay, who has come back to take over from our old conductor and friend Mr. Brown; also to Miss Neighbour who provides great support and much-needed backup in the violin section.

Cultural Council 1984 Our first meeting was held on the 27th of March with 36 members attending. Faye Luxton was elected Chairperson and Julie McKinnon and Cheryl Bristow undertook responsibility as Secretaries. For the first time the Council's Chairperson was invited to attend meetings of the Parent Teacher Association as liaison with school activities.

Distribution of posters, hostess duties and front-of-house management were among the contributions made in the Senior Citizens' Matinee and season of performances of 'The Masquers' in Term 1.

For 'The Beggars' Opera' with a six-night season, membership was extended, some attending to duties after helping with make-up for cast and chorus. Several were in the ranks of performers_ Unfortunately our projected Talent Quest and Variety Evening was made impossible by Term Three fixtures. However, the P.T.A. Fashion Parade on 19th September involved a number of Cultural Council representatives, models, performers and ticket sellers.

We welcomed the contributions made by the two American Field Scholars, Becky Greenwood and Jill Hartley. Best wishes to them on their return home and to all those leaving school this year.

NATIONAL HONOURS 1984 LEE SYLVA Lee was a member of the school team this year that represented Manurewa High School at the Auckland Secondary School Championships. He also plays for the Otahuhu under-15 side which this year won the Auckland title. He showed such outstanding ability in his position of wing for the club, that he won a place in the Auckland under-15 team and finally in the New Zealand Secondary School team that has just played a test series against the New South Wales team.

Lee distinguished himself in the first test by scoring all three tries for the Kiwi team,

Allison Sullivan Allison began speed skating early in 1983. She was Regional Champion in the Intermediate Ladies Speed contest in 1983. She won two national events at the New Zealand Roller Skating Championship in 1984 in the intermediate ladies grade, with three second and one third placings. Allison was selected for the New Zealand Speed Squad in 1984, the aim of which is to promote the sport among the junior skaters in New Zealand. She was regional champion in the time trials in 1984 (senior grade) receiving also two second.placings and one third place. She will now contest the 1985 New Zealand Roller Skating Championships in Rotorua.

David McFarlane David, who plays for the Manurewa Soccer Club, was selected to play in the under-14 Franklin Districts representative soccer team which attended the Premier Division National Tournament. From this tournament the national junior selector selected a national tournament team for which David was chosen.

Earlier this year, David attended the "Banked Track National" speed competition representing Manukau City Roller Skating Club. A few weeks later, he received a letter saying that he had made it into the New Zealand junior training squad which is in training for a junior competition in Australia, early next year.

HARRIERS

PAUL MURPHY Paul has represented the school in the 1st XI hockey team for the past two years. In 1984 he had the distinction of being selected for the Counties under-17 side, having previously represented Counties at the under-16 level. In early May, Paul attended a two-day trial at Hobson Park, one of three trials being held around the county. His form was so good at these trials that he was picked (as non-travelling reserve) for the New Zealand under-17 hockey team. This team had a brief trip to Australia during the May holidays

We had two outstanding harriers at the South Auckland See Schools cross country event held at Wesley College in late Sept After months of training Warren Sharp of the sixth form came in the senior boys with Patricia Hughes of the fifth form being third in the intermediate girls. Their dedication and commitmen very demanding sport paid dividends against strong oppositic many schools. Well done.

Other worthwhile places went fo Gary Deeney of the seven who was placed 13th in the senior boys, Stephen Wheeler 1411 intermediate boys and Emma Fox 9th in the junior girls.

Well done to other contestants who showed the importance o' part being more important than winning. They included Thompson, Paul Murphy, Alec Patterson, Clinton Morrison, Valvoli, Andrew Clarke, Chris Miller, Alan Isaac, Brian van Dam McCown, Steven Pye, Mei Lin Hansen, Suzanne Estelle, A Chitty, Lisa Murphy, Kristina St. George, Shona Dales, Susa Tracey Macbeth and Yolanda Bogard,

4th Form Netball The fourth form netball team this year was a success. With a t very experienced girls we only lost 5 games but won a great deal During the season we had 2 tournaments. Each tourr consisted of four half-hour games. Our first tournament v Papakura netball courts. This was sponsored by Coca-Cola and annually. Our team won their first three games but unfortunate the last.

GYMNASTICS The Auckland Secondary Schools' Gymnastics Competitions were held on the 19th of June and Manurewa High School entered 3 teams and 3 individuals.

The girls 'B' Grade team comprising of Angela Hough, Sarah Beard, Fiona Storm and Catherine Novenla and coached by Miss Bold competed extremely well and won their section. This was a tremendous achievement for our school as, in the past, Manurewa High School has been unknown in gymnastics and this year we beat top schools such as Epsom Girls Grammar and Avondale College, Individually, Jackie McCrum and Barbara James performed well, and Angela Hough was placed 2nd overall.

The girls grade team consisting of Catherine Hough, Catherine Stirling, Sonya Spyve and Lisa Clark were placed 5th in their section and thanks must go to Catherine Hough who helped to coach them.

In the boy's section of the competition Warwick Wilson performed in the 'A' grade section and did very well against tough opposition. He also did an excellent job of coaching the 'C' Grade boys team - Martial Wallard, Mark Leadbetter and Chris Hunter. It was the first time that these boys had entered a gymnastics competition and they were a credit to our school.

1984 has been an excellent year for gymnastics at Manurewa High School and we woud like to thank Miss Bold for coaching us.

Remedial Gymnastics Report

Girls Softball

Last year at Manurewa High School during the third term a remedial gymnastics class, for a handful of minimally disabled children, was initiated. It was because of the success of this first group and the fact that both the pupils of Manurewa High School and the children who attended were so enthusiastic, that a group began in the first term of 1984.

The hot summer season at the beginning of the year started off to be a drag as we were all unsure as to who was to be our coach. This is the first ti me in a couple of years that our school has had a softball team.

Through contacts we got in touch with a coach, Gray Dixon, so we were on our way. Miss Bold organised the team and Gray coached us during the week.

The therapeutic gymnastics got off to a good start and the group quickly began functioning efficiently. Some of the children in the group, especially a number of these who had returned from the previous year, were far too advanced for the set therapeutic exercises. Due to the tact, it was tentatively suggested by Mrs Cullen (one of the two district therapeutists) amd Mrs Martin (the main group organiser) that a more advanced gymnastics group began.

The team comprises of 3rd, 4th and 5th formers. Knowing that we had an important tournament ahead of us. we got together and built up a great team spirit.

Our first game was against our neighbours. James Cook. They narrowly beat us (mind you it was raining). We got our act together and trained hard during our lunchtime.

The major tournament had arrived and it was held in Papakura at the P.E.P. All the games were very enjoyable and very competitive.

Unfortunately we weren't very successful but we gave it our best shot.

We came about 3rd in the 'A' Grade competition.

The games were enjoyed thoroughly by all those involved and we wish to thank Miss Bold for her time and dedication. Also a thankyou to Gray Dixon for the time she gave up to coach us.

Mrs Martin, Mrs Cullen and Mrs Hodson (district therapist), would all like to thank both the pupils of Manurewa High School and of the course the children attending the classes, for making such a great success out of the group. LUNCHTIMES As the sun rises above the distant hills and the birds begin to sing, each and every one of us are reminded that a new day has dawned, and during the majority of days of the year this means that yet another school day has begun. With a deep sigh breakfast (by most people) is eaten, homes are left, and school is approached.

Assembly, period 1, period 2, interval, (a short respite for teachers and pupils alike) period 3; then time for our beloved almost-an-hour lunch break. Throughout the day this time has been long-awaited. For the teachers, (except those on duty) this is a time when escape from class nuisances is appreciated, and for the pupils, it is a time to do lastminute homework and to hide from classroom restrictions such as;"No more talking, you're supposed to be working!" or, "Can't you stop fiddling with that pencil while I'm talking? I don't know what you're going to do in an exam situation!" Although this time of peace is much appreciated by both teachers and pupils, sometimes it can be quite monotonous doing nothing except wandering in circles around the school. A plan was devised to alleviate this feeling of nothingness.

Teachers and pupils co-operated to produce a series of energetic and enjoyable inter-class games of netball, rugby, soccer and any other team game that could be thought up.

The final result of these games was that the lunch period became a time to be looked forward to with more enthusiasm than ever before.

Thanks to all those who have supported the idea.

KEY CLUB This year's Key Club began very successfully with much support (well just about all the support) coming from the fith form.

With Ann Watson as President, Allistair Hall as Vice President, Susan Goldstiver as Treasurer and Robert Tumbull as Secretary, we set out to achieve the aim of giving service to the community by helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves, and endeavouring to make our environment a more pleasant place in which to live.

The best idea, we decided, was to have a 'get to know each other' outing. This was the first event of the year. The destination was Pamell Pools and Lilliput. It was a great day with the added bonus of beautiful weather.

What could have been seen as 'the junior highlight of the year' was the dance organised by the Key Club held late in the first term. We made an unexpected profit of $300.

Unfortunately there was no convention this year. This is usually seen as the highlight for the Key Club. However, this may be seen in our favour, as we still hold the sports trophy - otherwise known as the 'toilet-seal' Half-way through the year, Ann Watson decided to try out on the work force scene, which left us without a President. With much discussion (5 minutes) it was decided that Tony Meredith was to be the new President.

Attendance dropped slightly through the year but among other things accomplished were the following projects: - cake stalls - a hot dog stand - charity collection - helping senior citizens to the 'Masquers' Plays.

The near future holds some more charity collections, a school work day, a pot-luck dinner, and introducing 5th formers to the Club.

The 1984 Key Club wishes to thank Mrs Oates, Ann Watson and Tony Meredith for their hard work and dedication, and also thanks fellow members for making this year all that it has been.

Fashion Parade 1984 The fashion parade has become an annual event in the school a this year once again a very high standard was achieved. Entit 'Uptown Girls', it took place at 7.30 p.m. on September 19th before very large and appreciative aduience.

The event is organised by the P.T.A. in order to raise funds but ma of the associated benefits are not as immediately obvious - the sen of unity and commitment between the students was very important.

The models were coached by ex-model Mrs Mei Archer and t clothes were supplied by by many local stores. Entertainment w provided by our own 'Instep' dance group and the breakdand 'Revolution' A large profit was made and a worthwhile raffle prize was a model' course.

IT'S ACADEMIC At 8 a.m. on rhursday, April 26, Craig, Amanda, Michael, Mr Yardley and myself arrived in the school carpark to go into town for the filming of 'It's Academic'. Mr Kidd came out briefly to tell us that it would be a good experience for us and not to worry if we lost. So, by 8.15 a.m. we had set off for the Television New Zealand Studios.

We arrived at the studios about ten minutes early, so we sat out the front trying to relax, but as the minutes ticked by, we got more and more nervous. After what seemed like two minutes, but was actually ten, we went in and were told, much to our amusement, to take a seat in the 'Artists' Waiting Room". One minute we were just plain ordinary school kids, and the next minute we were "artists".

From there we went to make-up, where they just put a bit of powder on our faces so they wouldn't look too shiny. We were then shown to the set, and told where to sit and how far back, how loud to speak and so on. John Hayden, the quizmaster, came in, talked to us for a while and we were then told what would happen, where to look and asked if we could hear property and see the screen on which the film clip was shown. We then started filming.

We were all worried that, once John Hayden started asking the questions, our minds would go blank. Nothing terrible like that happened, thank goodness. Once he started asking the questions we forgot about the cameras and just concentrated on the question.

At half time, we were in the lead by ten points and were glad we had a glass of water each in front of us because, with the combination of nerves and the hot lights, we really needed a drink. After about ten minutes we started the filming again and the rest you could say is "history". Unfortunately we didn't come first, but we gave it our best shot and enjoyed ourselves.

LIBRARY '84

by Glenis Fletcher (5/7) As the doors of the library swing open to another day Mrs Price greets you with a "good morning" and "could you clear the trolley please, everyone". What a pleasant way to start the day as we stroll over to the trolley, all 21 members, to relieve it of the pile of books and put them back where they belong.

This year a new scheme has been brought in. It started half-way through term 2. People from outside the school come in and help with library duties. Thanks to the voluntary help we have more free time which is needed for senior students nearing the end of the year.

Bookclub has continued to grow through 64 and it is hoped it will for many more years to come. The meetings are called on the first Monday of each month and new competitions and guest speakers have been included at these meetings.

This year the library has had an interesting display cabinet which has enabled students to display hobbies and collections. Miss Brigg's 3rd form Social Studies classes showed their term project models during term 2.

The Library has gained new chairs this year as well as a wide range of books, but our biggest new-corner is a photocopier which is widely used by students, it is a very welcome addition.

LIBRARY REPORT 1984 As it has for many years, the library provides a warm and welcoming environment at lunchtimes.

Displays throughout the year have included; Japanese art and artifacts, model ships, model houses, drama models and SC art folios.

The Book Club has continued to be popular with meetings each month attracting about thirty people.

The Librarians Mrs Thompson, Mrs Price and the Teacher Librarian Miss Overton thank the school librarians, led by Carmel Clissold for their support and work throughout the year.

DEBATING 1984 The debating team this year consisted of a number of enthusiastic participants (pupils and teachers alike).

Initially the debates were held only within the school, between juniors and seniors, between seniors and teachers. and a couple were planned (but didn't eventuate) between the debating team and seventh formers.

As the year advanced inter-school debates were arranged.

Two inter-school debates went oft well, and large crowds gathered to watch.

The first major debate was against Mangere College and the moot was: 'That all Art is Useless'. Before the debate even started our team was attacked by an irate sixth form art student who did not agree with our affirmative views. Possibly is was due to this 'warming up' that we won the debate, The second debate was against Rosehill and was on the topic 'That Maori Language is an Embarrasment in Schools' this time we argued for the negative side, and won.

The debates were fun and hopefully we have a great future in debating at M.H.S. Thanks must go to Mr. West for adjudicating the debates and to those who watched for being so responsive. A special thanks must go to Mrs. Oates and (the now absent) Mr. Houlihan for arranging the competitions and helping us in the preparation and delivery of our arguments B.M. 6/4

Role of the Prefects in School

THE SEVENTH FORM LEADERSHIP CAMP The 7th form camp at the beginning of term one proved to be an eyeopener for both pupils and staff members concerned, and it suddenly became very obvious that there was a transition period between 6th and 7th form and that expectations of the way in which we acted and the way we were supposed to act were not necessarily the same.

While enjoying the benefits of 7th form lit e we were rudely awakened to the responsibility that came with having an adult role in the school.

Constant reference to leadership was a reminder to us that we had taken on a role that could partially isolate us from the rest of the school.

The courses were designed to unite us, with group co-operation being the main aim and human pyramids, acid rivers and orienteering tended to test even the most co-operative and constructive of us.

The catering skills of Mrs Dixon proved to be a highlight of the camp and the rat in the ratters would probably attest to this.

Night life in the camp was varied, with an opossum hunt taking precedence over conventional nocturnal activities and thanks must go to the conscientious NZ AFS student who performed the daily 'unveiling of the toilet roll' ceremony in very suspicious circumstances in the men's ablutions block.

Thanks must go to all staff members for organising the trip to Miranda Hot Pools which proved to be an excellent way to relax after two days of hiking and orienteering.

Overall the camp proved to be a worthy start to our last year at school, with many valuable lessons being learnt by both staff-members and pupils G. Deeney and A. Simpson 7th form

The role of the prefect as M.H.S. has become rather complex this yea They have had to combine leadership and discipline in the variou duties around the school - duties like patrolling the school boundaries doing gate duty after school and canteen watch during lunchtimes hay made Prefects feel more noticed around the school but generally tb Prefects do not often get to know the junior school properly. A syster of liaison with the 3rd form classes has worked rather well in racer years, with the Prefects joining in on 3rd form camps at Waharau witl their form classes, getting to know them at long form classes ant organising inter-form sports in the 3rd form. This has gone a great dea further than just the Prefects seen on duty but there are still not IN direct benefits gained from juniors and seniors mixing.

The Prefects' role is one of leadership. The annual Prefects' Ball an example of co-operation under the guidance of the Head Prefed and the Deputy Prefects to make this event a highlight of many senior year at school. This year the ball was held at the Mandalay - due toth expense of decorating the school hall. On this night the role leadership can be toned down and social role can dominate.

Another social event for the Prefects was the trip to Parakai Pools as a reward for organising the ball and for the responsibil carried in the role of being Prefect. This year nearly all the Prefec went and a day was spent soaking in the hot pools and sliding down h hydroslides.

A Head Prefect also has the added responsibility of co-ordinati With the senior administration, especially Mr Thomson, and organi the Prefects' meetings so as to ensure that they stay together as a t and work towards the well-being of the school.

We have both enjoyed the chance of developing leadership and discovering the pressures that the administration have to cope in organising a school as large as Manurewa High. The role of Prefects in 1984 has not been a particularly public one although t was unity and co-operation amongst a group of mature and gene intelligent seniors.

I would like to personally thank all the Prefects of 1984 for a g year and extend our best wishes to next year's leaders of M.H.S. Dixon we feel also deserves a note of thanks for the great help gave us in organising the ball and the Prefects' trip and for cooking the leadership course at the beginning of the year.

Form Seven No, the seventh form is not a waste of time. As well as providing a chance to earn much-needed financial help for University (in the form of a bursary) it is also a useful transition period from 'schoolkid' to adult.

This means adopting more relaxed attitudes which are closer to the environment to be encountered at tertiary levels of study, and a 'one to one' relationship with most of the teachers.

My last year at high school has been an amazing experience. It has been a year for maturing both socially and academically - a time for making friends (of both students and teachers), leaving my mark on MHS and discovering the real person within my school uniform.

With various camps, dinners, and other social engagements, concerts and parties (as well as the academic side of school) the year has been worthwhile in its function to mature the 7th formers and prepare them for the world outside of school.

I would say the 7th form year is a very worthwhile and exhilerating experience. To onlookers the 7th form would appear to be a group of immature schoolchildren who achieve very little academically. We do however, savour our last year as students and take advantage of our prolonged 'childhood'; managing to keep up our guise of not working, while at the same time doing a tremendous amount of intellectual study and work.

Looking back over the year, the 7th form has been a rewarding experience filled with new discoveries. Overall it is a time in my life that I will never forget.

Annual Prefects' School Ball 1984 The Prefects' School Ball is an annual event on the school calendar and is often described as the highlight of the social year' for many senior students.

Upwards from form five pupils, and invited guests are allowed to attend, and this year a record number of over 350 people enjoyed a worthwhile night out.

Organised by the 1984 prefects of M.H.S., the ball was held again at the Mandalay Cabaret in Newmarket, on August 8th from 7.30 till! midnight.

An up-to-date band and 'scrumptious' supper were provided with plenty of dancing, talking, and meeting up with old friends, I think the people who hired limousines to the door had the right idea.

An enthusiastic group of young men and women made the most of this occasion, resulting in more than one student being 'grounded' by rather irate parents for arriving home with the dawn.

Overall the Prefects Ball is an event which can be exciting and fun, (depending on how much you are willing to put into it yourself) and is a definite 'must' for the senior student.

EXAMINATION RESULTS Examination results last year continued at their usual high level.

At Form Seven, out of a total of 27 candidates, 9 achieved 'A' Bursaries and 12 '8' Bursaries a combined pass rate of 78%.

At Universtiy Entrance level pupils achieved a combined pass rate of 67%; out of 114 candidates, 67 were accredited (59%), 9 passed by sift ing (8%) a total of 76 out of 114.

At school Certificate level numbers of pupils achieving 4,5, or 6 passes increased from last year. Subject means were also up in most subject areas.
