Ts Editor It has been a very busy year once again. So many exciting things happened this year that it became a problem finding room to cram it all in this years edition. With the production, dance and music performances, academic and sporting achievements not to mention the 50 year reunion/anniversary, its been a busy year.

This year a specific senior class was created to help with the magazine, taking photos and compiling pages; so thanks to 03YBK for all your contributions.

Thanks again to all those that assist with the magazine by taking photos throughout the year, write the articles and offer wisdom and advice.

Good luck and take care over the holidays — farewell to those leaving us.

Principal’s Report I would rate 2012 one of the most demanding and rewarding of any years I have been in a school.

To manage Term 1 with 30 classrooms out of commission was a massive demand. It resulted in trying to fit into the remaining spaces, sharing rooms, using rooms such as the two Libraries, the Pavilion, the Whare and the Whare kitchen which are not designed as classrooms. However the outcome has been significant. With new classrooms, upgraded toilet facilities and redesigned seating areas, there has been a huge improvement in the atmosphere in the school. Many students commented how much better the school had become due to the development.

The hard work of many of the staff especially Julie Lockie, Business Manager, deserves recognition. At the same time all staff and students should be congratulated for their resilience and patience to successfully manage through this project. It will be a benefit for many staff and students through the future of Manurewa High School.

Despite the stresses associated with the redevelopment of the A to D Block, it did not stop a lot of very good achievements by the school as outlined in this magazine.

One achievement that I would like to highlight is the success of a group of students who took up the challenge of setting up a business with the support of Lance Hutchison as their mentor and Emma O’Riordan their teacher.

Emma introduced the Young Enterprise Scheme to the school. This is a very demanding programme which requires the establishment of a Business.

Kulgan Flynn, Ryan King, Guang Liu Chu, Kayla Pickenll and Lar Su’a took the challenge, forming Caring & Co and went on to win the following regional awards:

In December the team will travel to Wellington to claim an excellence award and will compete for NZ Business of the Year and Lar is 1 of 5 entrepreneurs in the competition for Managing Director of the Year.

We are capable of achieving in any field that we want.

As the famous American tennis player Arthur Ashe says: I have tried to keep on with my striving because this is the only hope I have of ever achieving anything worthwhile and lasting.

There are many demonstrations of students achieving in performing and sport. The sense of humour and friendly nature of the student body has been well established. We have seen how the academic performance of the school has improved. This needs to be used to access further education and career opportunities.

Make the most of what you have. Don’t limit yourself.

Keep in mind this quote from Nelson Mandela “After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.”

2012 will also be noted as the year that the school reintroduced an enhanced mentoring programme. To have so many Year 12 and 13 students undertake a

rigorous programme of training so they could provide mentoring to Year 9 and 10 students will be a great legacy that has been left at the school.

Senior students who have managed to navigate through the first 3 or 4 years of school have an important message to pass onto the juniors. I have been in schools with mentoring before but have never seen it so quickly and effectively introduced as it was managed this year at Manurewa High School. Much of this was due to the hard work of Andrea Thomas, Whanau Co-ordinator and Whaea Tamara, FYD Stars Coordinator. Thanks to all involved for making mentoring such a significant part of the school. The words of a year 9 student stay with me. On the first day when the Year 9s were introduced to the Year 12 mentors, the student said she was so scared of starting at Manurewa due to the size of the senior students and the school. After 1 hour she felt totally at ease, what a positive way to start in a new school.

Outstanding Regional Company of the Year, Financial Management Award, Excellence in Business Management Award and Lar Su’A won Entrepreneur of the Year. Emma O’Riordan was also awarded Young Enterprise Teacher of the Year.

The group self-produced and marketed olive oil to raise over $3000 for the Life Education Trust, giving almost 1000 children the opportunity to experience the ‘Harold’ programme delivered in Primary Schools by Life Education Trust. What they have also managed is to send a very important message to other students:

Hi, my name is Steve Smith and I currently serve as the Board Chairperson on the Manurewa High School Board of Trustees. The following report is to highlight and share some of the many exciting events that have taken place throughout the year with you all.

This year under the Academic leadership of our Principal Mr Gargiulo the staff who support the school have continued to work steadily towards reducing the barriers to learning for all students. A key aspect of this work has been the continued enhancement and progress of the whanau system which has contributed towards a family culture within the school providing peer support for and amongst students. The support and responses by students, parents and caregivers in regards to student achievement conferences held throughout the year has been fantastic and I would like to acknowledge you all for being part of the school’s on-going commitment towards educational success. With your support, students have shown self-determination towards their learning and personal goals, but above all else perseverance and sacrifice throughout the year to reach their potential. Our students’ educational achievements are reflective of the generosity of teachers’ synergies, time and expertise within the classroom and on the sports fields to ensure students are afforded the best possible chance to experience success. However, to sustain this pattern of success we need to recognize that quality educational outcomes are made possible when students, families, communities, teachers and the school continue to work in partnership towards a tradition of excellence for all students.

The Board of Trustees acknowledges the collective dedication of all staff working alongside Principal Salvitori Gargiulo and Second Principal Daniel Wilson, both with their own individual flair and leadership whose collaborative efforts is instrumental to the continued success of the school.

A tradition and culture of excellence and success is reflected through strong leadership, strategic planning, and sound financial management ensuring that the school is strongly positioned to move into the future.

To all parent volunteers and staff who provided much support, coaching and enthusiasm, to all our students throughout

the year, a special thank you and we look forward to your continued support next year.

The year has been frenetic with students participating within varied activities such as Sports, The Arts, and Academia at National and International levels. The outcomes of such student

Staff Farewells Sandra Shaw Sandra Shaw has been on the staff at Manurewa High School for 23 years. At the end of Term 3 Sandra resigned her position as Deputy Principal.

Sandra has been in a Deputy Principal role for 9 years. In this time she has worked very hard to provide a caring and safe environment for students.

Sandra’s sense of humour and fairness has been prominent throughout.

She also put a lot of extra time into supporting activities in the school such as coordinating Polyfest and managing the 1st XV Rugby team. While Deputy, Sandra retained her role as a classroom teacher. She often selected to teach English students who were at risk of not gaining success and worked hard to have them achieve.

Sandra’s farewells at the end of the term were a good example of the type of person that is ‘Sandra Shaw’. As well as a Friday after school function in the staffroom, where student’s performed, there were a series of Whanau assemblies where Sandra addressed the students and shared with them that she is a South Auckland person and proud of it and that they need to be confident of who they are and advised them to strive for the top, reminding them it will take hard work. She then presented the Year 9 students with sweets.

We are pleased to announce that after Sandra spends Term 4 of 2012 travelling the world, she will be returning to the school as a teacher with special responsibilities in the International Students programme.

The school is grateful for her contributions as a Deputy Principal and looks forward to having her remain on the staff in 2013.

Sacha Mail Sacha joined the Art department in 2003. So this year is pretty much her tenth here at Manurewa.

She started working here as a primary specialist teacher with an art background who taught part-time with just junior classes. But she evolved over the years into the wonderful Photography specialist within the department.

Sacha had a great many good points, and a few odd ones.

Namely her insane amount of hoarding!

Sacha was never keen to throw out students work - on the odd chance they may return to collect it!

As Larissa will attest, (especially as

Roz Simpson Kia ora koutou, Hard to believe it’s been four whole years since I caught a plane in Glasgow and came to South Auckland. Since I arrived here at MHS the All Blacks won the World Cup, Scotland beat the Aussies (twice!) and MHS beat pretty much everybody. I’ve learned how to pronounce my “wh” and my “ng”, discovered a love of cassava cake and laddu, started calling interval “morning tea” and stopped calling jandals “flipflops”. I’ve gone stargazing with year 12s, ridden rollercoasters with the year 13s and pointed at cows with Y11s.

I’ve watched my amazing form class grow from gangly little newbies who looked as nervous to be here as I did

she inherited the office during Sacha’s maternity leave) Sacha’s office was the breeding ground of ‘piles’ of random paper, books and supplies.

Not surprisingly it has had a huge makeover since she has been gone!

Sacha left on maternity leave last year and made the decision to stay home with her beautiful wee girl Summer. (An excellent choice even though we will miss her!)

Sacha has been a wonderful colleague and friend to many at Manurewa and the Art department espcially will miss her warm cheerful and bubbly personality.

All the best for your family and life away from MH! Adele to confident, opinionated young adults who will go on to great things. I’ve overcooked experiments and lost an eyebrow or two, and I think I must be the only teacher to have rollerskated around the hall and ridden a motorcycle through the covered way. I’ve celebrated our successes and grieved our losses as I would those of my own family, so far from here.

Being here has given me a grounding in what it means to be in Aotearoa that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I feel lucky to have gotten to know you, your whānau and your community, and will miss this place and the people who make it special.

However, I feel it’s time for new adventures and I will take the gifts you have given with me wherever I go.

I can’t believe 5 years went by so quickly in this school, but when you are having fun time flies. While travelling I learnt an important lesson. To realise something is good, you need to walk away from it. I appreciated New Zealand’s beauty while on the road. Likewise to realise the beauty of Manurewa High School, the staff and most importantly the students, I need to go somewhere else. I’d like to thank all the people that supported me through the years. Particularly the Whanau Dean Team and the Maths Department. I’d also like to thank the students as they taught me as much as I taught them. Finally I have to thank two people who gave me the opportunity to

Staff Success BRITISH COUNCIL – LINKING MINDS SCHOLARSHIP TO WALES I was one of four recipients of the British Council’s Linking Minds Scholarship who were fortunate enough to travel to Wales to look at all aspects of their bilingual education systems. I went on the trip expecting to speak to people in key roles to find out how they managed to get equality between the two languages Cymraeg, the Welsh language and English to seek strategies on how it could work back here in Aotearoa with Te Reo. We learnt an incredible amount as we were shown a wide scope of the Welsh Education system, visiting several schools from Early Childhood Centres through to Secondary and the Cardiff Metropolitan University. We also met with Estyn who are the equivalent of ERO (Education Review Office) here; an organisation called Urdd Cymru who provide social recreational activities for young people in the Welsh medium to encourage the use of the language outside of home and school and CILT who looked at strategies to promote triliteracy within schools.

Throughout the visit, especially after visiting the Welsh Language Commissioner Meri Huws, the answer was pretty clear in my mind that the Welsh people had used law as their key determinant in leading the revival of their language through compulsion.

Under the law, Welsh is compulsory up to 16 years of age in schools, all public

signs (road, street etc.) and publications (formal letters, brochures) must be bilingually written or available in both Welsh and English. This has supported the use of the language within society, built its status and helped to change public perception.

The law has encouraged and helped education with the language, helped with its revival and is continuing to bring it up to an equal status with the English language.

On return from our trip to Wales myself and the other 3 recipients plan to take what we have learnt and put it to use with something that we feel will benefit our nation and Te Reo Māori. We hope to take Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori and promote, encourage and transform that into Te MARAMA o Te Reo Māori! By taking Māori language week and turning it into Māori language month. It is a small contribution that we can make work

within the schools and communities we are currently in and hopefully others will jump aboard the waka to make it happen in their communities and industries. So keep an eye out for that whānau!

Lastly a huge mihi to my whānau, our school Senior Leadership Team, staff, students and their whānau who have supported me throughout my endeavours here at Manurewa High School. Thank you for standing with me on this journey and working with me in the awesome mahi we have been doing which was the basis of my acceptance of this scholarship and experience in Wales.

HOSPITALITY DEPARTMENT BEST IN COUNTRY entering careers as chefs or service professionals. Four schools made it to the finals and Manurewa High School came out on top, winning the Excellence in Training (Schools) award.

To be eligible for the award, schools had to demonstrate outstanding achievement in all areas of hospitality, including investment in resources, teacher upskilling, employment/ exam/competition success, pathways into tertiary programmes, student demand for courses and innovative delivery or assessment methods.

Schools also had to demonstrate evidence of industry relationships both within the classroom and in work experience situations.

Daisy Chandra, head of Manurewa High School’s hospitality and catering department, is delighted with the win. “Our

students always do well in hospitality competitions, and as a department we focus on providing the best hospitality training we possibly can. It’s fabulous to be acknowledged as New Zealand’s top provider of secondary school hospitality training.”

Manurewa High School’s hospitality department was judged best in the country this year.

Manurewa High School was announced winner of the Schools category at the Excellence in Training Awards 2012.

The awards are organised by the Hospitality Standards Institute (hsi. co.nz), the industry training organization for hospitality. The awards recognise the country’s top players in hospitality training. The awards were held at Auckland’s Langham Hotel and were hosted by entertainer Jackie Clarke.

From here we teamed up with Life Education Trust who were keen to help us in our mission. We negotiated with an olive grove on Waiheke Island who agreed to donate their olive fruit crop to us. The Olive fruit was then hand picked by a group of volunteers and transported to Azzuro Groves, a miller on the island who we negotiated with to mill our olives at cost price.

The Dragon’s Den challenge was up next. Through countless hours and weekends spent at school, we created a presentation that would ‘wow’ the judges.

This presentation lead us to winning 3rd place Dragon’s Den winners in the South Auckland Region.

Everything became real when we received our stock of 300 Extra Virgin Olive Oil bottles. Our first delivery was most exhilarating. Seeing the smiles on their dials was a real high for us. We made many sales throughout the year which lead us to selling out of stock! Our most memorable sale was to the Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key. In the end, all sales made an equal contribution to our cause.

For every one bottle sold, one child is put through the Life Education Trust Harold the Giraffe Programme. We were able to put the whole of Homai Primary School through the programme for 2013.

Another high was meeting up with Business Man of the Year, Don Braid.

Mr Don Braid is the Managing Director of Mainfreight. He gave helpful tips in how we could tell our story in the annual report and how we could continue on for next year.

The Regional Awards was another great high for us. We were able to come out with five awards: •Award for Outstanding Regional Company of the Year •Excellence in Business Management Award •Award for Financial Management •Lar Su’A won Entrepreneur of the Year •Our teacher Miss O’Riordan won Teacher of the Year.

December 4th is when the Caring & Co team travel down to Wellington to hopefully bring back up some National Awards.

This year has taught the Caring & Co team many individual lessons. We have all learnt skills needed to succeed out in the big world of business. We encourage all future students who have even a slight passion for business to partake in this wonderful innovative programme.

It has been a massive year for our company Caring & Co which began with 7 students Lar Su’a, Ryan King, Guang Liu, Kulgan Flynn, Kayla Picknell, Vimean Keo and Hao Nguyen.

Together we started up a company whose mission was to promote healthy lifestyles amongst the younger South Auckland generation. We did this by selling our product ‘Unique Drizzle’ Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Miss O’ Riordan gave us the opportunity to enter the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme, a young innovative programme that runs throughout the country. This programme gives students the real life experience of the business world, an experience that cannot be learnt in any classroom.

There have been many companies that have started up throughout the country, thousands in fact. However this is a story about one particular small Manurewa High School company who drizzled their way to the top.

Our first challenge was to come up with an idea that would amaze the whole of Auckland and hopefully the rest of the country. This was the most difficult challenge we ever faced. We went from rubber ducky’s that change colour according to its temperature, to glow in the dark toilet paper and then every other idea in between. We were all beginning to get frustrated with each other (this happened a lot throughout the year) and then we stopped and thought about what we are aiming for as a company. We decided that we wanted a product that will help our community, the younger generation to be more precise. This is when we came across an opportunity, Olive Oil. At the time we all thought it was crazy, how is Olive Oil going to help care for our community? I mean it is just Olive Oil right? This is where ‘Unique Drizzle’ was born. We decided that we will sell the oil and donate the profits to a charity that will put their resources into helping the children in South Auckland.

Through thorough research we were able to find a charity that were big on promoting healthy lifestyles amongst children, so big in fact that their mascot is the No.1 most recognisable mascot in New Zealand amongst children!

Stella la Quet - Crafternoon Tea Stella la Quet had the opportunity to sell at The Crafternoon Tea Market in Kingsland. Stella La Quet was formed by three Level 2 Business Studies students, Marie Levao, April Purcell and Kalani Seumanu. We made and sold handmade hairclips, bracelets and headbands. We wanted to use buttons within our designs as these are items that everyone has lying around at home and we wanted to use them in a different way.

On the morning of the market we were nervous but excited at the same time because this was the first time we had been to an actual market. We arrived there early to set up and get everything prepared before the market started. We were eagerly awaiting our customers.

We didn’t know what to expect.

The first hour flew by and customers came and went without purchasing anything and just when we felt like giving up, there was a huge rush of people through, we had a lot more customers coming up to our stall, looking amazed at our products. Some people were interested in what we made and others

gave us really good advice that we could take in for next time. People were really impressed with our display and it fit in really nicely with all the other beautiful displays around us. We were also surprised to see what all the other businesses had to offer.

It was spectacular to see so many people selling products that they too had made themselves. We enjoyed ourselves and would most definitely do it again.

We all made a reasonable amount of profit that day and we were delighted to be asked back to sell our products for a second time. We took this offer up and extend our product range to make the most of the market. We also donated 25% of our profit to our chosen charity, Bellyful. Bellyful is a charity who provides free meals for families with newborn babies, and families who are struggling with illness. We believe that this is a very worthy cause and were happy to help out in our own little way.

We are looking forward to see what we will be able to achieve next year in Business Studies.

Kermadec Expedition deep water. I think it was the aspect of the unknown that frightened me but snorkelling with protected fish had dissolved my fears and given me the connection with the outdoors, the ocean and its marine life. It has allowed me to truly appreciate how lucky we are to be on Earth.

Sir Peter Blake was a great man. I wanted to follow in his footsteps and be different and brave like him. Through this expedition I found that following in our great leader’s footsteps meant creating my own footsteps

and being different in my own way.

The expedition was an unforgettable experience, and using one word to describe the adventure will never do it justice. I would like to thank Mrs Govind and Mrs Stevens and all the teachers who had supported me up in the days leading up to the expedition, it would not have been possible without their help.

The expedition to the Kermadec Islands has allowed me to experience so many rare opportunities which many people might not have the chance to do in their lifetime. I had recently turned 18 and I already feel like I have achieved many things in life. I have gone on a navy ship, flown in an army helicopter to Raoul Island, swam with sharks and been with dolphins for over an hour.

The highlight of the trip for me was having the chance to go dolphin and whale watching with Rochelle Constantine, a Whale and Dolphin scientist. We geared up and went on the RHIB (Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat), for about an hour we went around Raoul Island and seen nothing except and huge piece of pumice floating and a Turtle. Then we suddenly saw a pod of Dolphins, we tried to get a tissue sample but only manage to obtain one. Having the chance to get up close and personal with wild Dolphins was amazing.

Before my involvement with the Sir Peter Blake Trust I had been hesitant to even apply for the forum. I was scared I won’t be chosen and I thought it was a waste of time since I didn’t know how to snorkel, didn’t know anything about the Kermadec Islands and was afraid of

Careers Department ‘A change is as good as a rest’ – Yeah right!

Our students have attended the following events this year: Year 10 Science Sizzler and MIT/Middlemore Year 11 SciTech and Hospital Tour Health Science Fair Year 12/13 Panel session Scholarship session Evaluation session Leadership Dinner in December Year 9 and 10 At the beginning of the year, all Year 9 students visited the Careers Department as part of a career programme they completed in DLC. It was good to meet many of them for a second time since they last visited us as Year 8’s in November 2011 and discover that they are already planning their education around their future interests and skills.

All of our Year 10 students have again had the opportunity to visit MIT. Students are bussed to MIT campus for a morning ‘looksee’ to get a feel for what tertiary education might be like as a future study option. Again this year, up to 20 Year 10 students were invited to attend Girls into Science and BEAMS programmes at the University of Auckland in November.

Professional Pathways Senior students interested in Law and Medicine attended a mentoring session by practising professionals from each career where they gained an insight into the duties

Health Could B4U This programme assists Maori and/ or students of Pacific Island origin who might be interested in a career in Health. It is run in partnership with CMDHB (Counties Manukau District Health Board) and our school. This

and vast range of career pathways open to them once training was complete.

STAR Courses To increase students’ awareness of training programmes outside of the classroom, we offered students who identified specific career intentions the opportunity to attend free STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource) programmes. The courses were in ICT, Flight Attending, DJing and Stage Lighting/production. The majority of these courses were held in the school holidays where students achieved valuable vocational credits to add to their qualifications.

Just the Job Ex-student Joshua Hughes was successful in his audition for the television careers programme Just the Job and was cast in a special armed forces story. This has certainly been a year of changes what with long terms, persistent wet weather (winter and summer), delays in reconstruction of major facilities, new programme initiatives and changes within our department staffing – but not long now and we can all rest and reflect on all the positive results we have achieved this year.

Firstly congratulations to all senior students who have made it through the turbulent third term – coping with newly formatted online application procedures (what a pain…), preparation of soul searching personal resumes, researching of all applicable opportunities and preparing for end of year assessments. You certainly had your work cut out! We have had a record number of tertiary scholarships awarded this year and it is great to see so many of you venturing out of Auckland to experience new study horizons and independent life skills.

You may have noticed that we have had a few changes within the Careers department staff this year. In March, Ms Rowsell accepted the position as relief Gateway Coordinator for Mr Reid who was on leave and has successfully provided our students with some wonderful workplace experiences since Mr Reid resigned in June. Miss Paotama did a sterling job holding the fort in careers admin until the end of Term 2 when we were fortunate to hire Miss Telford to assist us for the remainder of the year.

Student numbers from all levels visiting the Careers Department during interval and lunch-time have increased this year as has the request for personal career/option interviews. We welcomed the Year 13 Personal Project students, many of whom became our ‘regulars’ for 4 periods a week and others who were frequent callers before school, interval and lunchtimes.

Akoranga Block Opening After almost a year of coping without 30 classrooms and enduring construction noise, trucks and workers, the redeveloped A-D Block, now named the ‘Akoranga Block’ officially opened on Friday 27 July, 2012.

The Akoranga Block is the new home to the Digital Technology and Mathematics learning areas and also houses the new ‘Discovery Learning Centre’, a purpose-built modern learning environment for Year 9 students. All classrooms have been completely refurbished and outfitted with new furniture, air conditioning and digital facilities. All external stairwells were

removed from the building, a new external balcony walkway has been commissioned, a beautiful new ‘boulevard’ area opened up and the staffroom and hall have also been given a facelift.

The Akoranga Block was opened by distinguished alumni Sir John Walker at a ceremony that included speeches by invited guests and performances by the Samoan Group and Concert Band.

Afterwards guests were invited to tour the new building and were treated to an outdoor performance by the jazz band in the new boulevard.

A huge thank you must be given to Mrs

Julie Lockie, Business Manager, for the huge amount of work that she did to ensure the project was a success.

Our time at Manurewa High School has provided us with many opportunities and challenges. We both have learnt a lot from our time here and we will take what we have learnt and apply it to our everyday lives in the future. With everyone going down different paths we cannot help but look back at the time we have spent at school. We have made many friendships, discovered what we are passionate about and been educated in different areas of schooling.

Being a prefect and a mentor this year has been an unforgettable experience in which we have learnt valuable life skills and established relationships with junior students who will one day be leaders of the school. There were many obstacles we have had to overcome over the year; such as learning to find a balance between getting an education and our extra-curricular activities, adjusting to the changes made to the ‘Whanau system’, as well as organising the school ball.

In the years to come we cannot be sure of what lies ahead; but we know that we can take the knowledge we have gained while at school and utilise it when facing challenges in the future.

It has been an honour and a privilege to be the head girl and head boy of Manurewa High School for 2012.

We would like to thank the Prefect team for their hard-work, dedication, and support. Honestly, overall, the trade fair for our team was fun and challenging as there were loads of other teams selling their products that they had made during class and in their own time.

The hall was filled with ahuge variety of products being sold, from kites to photo frames. As a team we sold hackysacks, earrings, jewellery boxes and also stationary.

The whole experience for us from receiving our task which was to make our own products that are different, innovative; deciding what to make, to actually creating our products, and finally getting The Most Innovative Product certificate and canteen voucher for our work (especially the hackysacks) was overwhelming.

So that’s what we, ‘In Caelum Ascende’ (our team name) enjoyed about the trade fair.

Wellington On May 16, Year 13 Accounting and Year 13 Economics students travelled to Wellington to expand their present comprehensive knowledge by visiting the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the Beehive.

When we got off the plane the shuttles came and took us straight to the Reserve Bank where we were taught the role that RBNZ has, to manage monetary policy to maintain price stability, promoting the maintenance of a sound financial system and controlling the OCR (Official Cash Rate) to control inflation rates, but mostly they are known for supplying New Zealand with its banknotes and coins. Their vision is to promote a sound and dynamic stable financial system in New Zealand and they work towards this goal by having efficient payment systems, meeting the currency needs of the public and providing effective support services to

the bank.

We learnt a lot about how the financial system works and how RBNZ has an immense role in maintaining this. We were then shown the evolution of money through priceless artefacts that the Reserve Bank has kept from nearly a century ago. But what had caught the hearts and minds of the students was the MONIAC. The MONIAC (monetary national income analogue computer) was created by New Zealander Bill Phillips and is approximately 2 m high, 1.2 m wide and almost 1 m deep, and consisted of a series of clear plastic tanks and pipes which were fastened to a wooden board. Each tank represented some aspect of the national economy and the flow of money around the economy was illustrated by the coloured water.

A demonstration of how this machine worked intrigued and fascinated the fellow students.

After a well-deserved break we visited the

Parliament house, otherwise famously known as the Beehive. We were taken on a full in depth tour which showed us where all the MP’s (Members of Parliament) gather for their caucus meetings and parliamentary debates.

We found out about the history, architecture, refurbishment and restoration of the parliament buildings and most importantly the strict rules and regulations that are enforced in the Beehive.

This day trip to Wellington was very educational and a unique experience as it has shown us why RBNZ is the central bank and how it plays an integral role in controlling and maintaining the New Zealand financial system. Both RBNZ and relevant parties associated with parliament contributed to a large proportion of our wonderful country’s financial state of affairs. To our future fellow accounting and economics students planning on embarking on this journey next year good luck to you and enjoy this unbelievable experience!

Monetary Policy Challenge relationships and had identified some of the key issues facing the New Zealand economy.

The Monetary Policy Challenge links to NCEA achievement s t a n d a r d : Economics 3.4 (AS 90632).

It sparked the passion for economics, giving our students the chance to link what they learnt in textbooks with reality. The whole experience has

The Monetary Policy Challenge gives secondary school students an exciting opportunity to put themselves in the shoes of Reserve Bank economists and recommend what the Official Cash Rate could be.

Using the same information as the Reserve Bank, teams assess the economic conditions facing New Zealand and the outlook for inflation.

Based upon their assessment of the economy, each team decides on an appropriate setting for the Official Cash Rate.

Nikita Chand, Jessica Simpson, Ricknesh Kumar, Ashley Milner and Morgan Davis were the participants from our school. They showed a strong understanding of the economic

Digital Technology It has been a very busy year for the Digital Technology department.

At the beginning of the year the department was spread out across the school in temporary computer labs while the middle of the school was being renovated.

At the beginning of Term 3, they moved back into the new Akoranga block after it had been renovated.

The department now boasts six rennovated computer labs and two half computer labs for Media Studies and Robotics.

It is not the only new thing that has happened in the Digital Technology department. This year has been all about recreating the courses to be more innovative, creative and reflect the new achievement standards.

For the first time, Digital Technology has been introduced to NCEA. This means students in Level 1 Digital Media and Technology could now get course endorsements with Merit or Excellence for 2012 and in 2013 all levels will be offered this opportunity.

The department also welcomed two new teachers to the department, Mr Hollis and Miss Dempster while Mrs Boyle was on leave for the year.

They have also bid farewell to Mrs Kennedy at the end of 2012 while she is away on maternity leave.

The new year looks to be very interesting with the introduction of new courses in both Level 2 and Level 3.

The new alignment of standards in Level 3 means that Digital Technology is now an approved subject, a subject that has changed from just teaching computer skills to providing students with the skills and creative ability to adapt to the rapid changes of digital technology.

Technology is advancing at such a fast rate that students need to be taught skills to ensure that they are able to adapt and use these new technologies in their learning and better prepare them for their future careers.

New Courses

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2012

This year has seen the introduction of some new and exciting courses. In the junior levels, Year 10 Robotics and Year 10 Media Studies have been added as full year courses.

In the senior levels, Level 1 Interactive media was introduced this year and focused on the interactive elements of computer science, such as App development for the Android platform along with video production skills, for a short promotional movie.

Level 2 Digital Design had a strong influence of

computer generated art which was then captured into short animated films.

2013 courses: Level 2 Digital Technology will be developing skills founded in Level 1 Digital Technology, while exploring new aspects of where these skills can be used within the work place.

Level 2/3 Interactive Media will be strongly influenced by the new Achievement Standards that will allow the department an opportunity to introduce the concepts behind 3D animation and game development, and is sure to be an exciting new course.

Art Department the department until the end of the year, so we haven’t had to say goodbye just yet.

Although we think she will be rather busy next year as she has recently announced that she is expecting a baby boy in February 2013. We congratulate her and Alan on this wonderful news and hope Summer enjoys having a younger brother to play with.

Ms Hansen got married in January, although it rained on the day, it did not spoil all having a wonderful day and evening.

She also decided that one celebration was not enough and took a trip to Sri Lanka celebrating with her new husband’s family at two receptions, one in Colombo and one in Kandy. She spent the rest of her month travelling around Sri Lanka on a honeymoon.

Mrs Lord has been working hard this year balancing her time with the Art Department, Ahi Dean team and her lovely family

including her lovely baby Chelsea who has kept her busy. She has coped well throughout the year and managed to survive an eventful 2012.

The baby news continues in the department with the announcement that Ms Whittaker will be expecting a baby also in February. She has decided to take a year off and enjoy some quality time with her family. We wish her well and hope she takes the time to put her feet up if she gets a moment.

The department has experienced an eventful year both personally and professionally with a lot of good times and many more to come. We wish all the students and staff along with their friends and family a safe and happy holiday. Also ka kete ano to those who are leaving us, wishing you well on your future endeavours.

There have been a number of changes in the art department for 2012 which has kept the whole department busy throughout the year. With our Art department down to 4 members and Mrs Lord putting some of her time into her deans’ positions, we have all still managed to survive the year.

The department has been busy working on implementing the new Level 2 standards this year and have been gaining some pleasing results and will continue to develop as we grow more confident with these changes.

Level 1 seemed to be an overall success this year with the help of a large number of committed and talented young artists striving for the very best results.

Level 3 worked right up to the deadline this year to ensure their folios were sent away for external marking. It will be interesting to see the results next year and wish them all the best.

With a change in our junior art programmes this year, we have seen our juniors producing high quality art work and we are seeing some particular talent in printmaking. We think we have some strong talent to look forward to in the next few years.

We successfully ran another school exhibition, with a number of works being sold, with Mr Jones supporting the cause with a large number of purchases. It was very pleasing to see a number of students and parents appreciating the talent of our students.

It is always a good process for our art students to go through in realising the value of art.

Members of our department continue to evolve and change with the lovely ladies of the Art enjoying life’s milestones and events of 2012. We have greatly appreciated the work that Mrs Fullard has done filling in for Mrs Mail for the entire year. She has done a wonderful job with all her students and it has been a pleasure working alongside a knowledgeable, openminded and creative teacher. We wish her well in her future endeavours and hope she enjoys a lot more family time in Rotoroa.

As mentioned above Mrs Mail has been on maternity leave this year and intended to return to work in term three; however she has fallen in love with motherhood and made the decision to resign from her role at Manurewa High and concentrate on raising her beautiful baby girl Summer. She did manage to squeeze in a Friday role in

Art History On Wednesday the 9th May 2012 the Level 3 Art History class, along with the Level 2 Art Emergence class, took a day trip into Auckland City to appreciate some of the fabulous art work the Auckland Art Gallery has to offer. We were lucky enough to catch the international exhibition “Degas to Dalí” which really brought the learning we were doing in class to life. Being able to see the large scale paintings in reality meant that we could understand and realise the way these artist applied their painting techniques. The Auckland Art Gallery had a very large variety of work, which meant that the trip into town was well worth it and we all came away with a much better understanding of the way in which artists work.

Dance Department Stage Challenge was once again a huge success with Cassie Ganley as choreographer. Her concept of the domestic violence theme which abstractly used dance to tell this story was chilling yet inspirational.

“The secret circus in our homes goes on behind closed doors - Evil loiters and violence kills - The circus hides its secrets - It’s a shame the circus, a place of love and laughter - should be a home for wickedness not happily ever-afters”.

The circus theme was enough to once again put us up amongst the high decile schools. We took third place with Rangitoto College, 100 students were involved and we were all very proud of our efforts.

Discovery Learning Centre This is what one student said about Discovery in Term 1, “So far I have learned about my whakapapa, about the marae and where we got the name Manurewa from. It was fun learning about how to fly a kite and how to build one. It was hard but it was all worth it because all our ideas came out. We all communicated better and even though our kite failed to fly, we all came back and laughed about it. It was pretty funny because at the start we were all too afraid to even talk to each other but then at the end we all had fun and we were all talking to each other”.

Discovery is a programme specifically designed for Year 9 students to give them choices about life by experiencing

a variety of leadership styles and decision making opportunities as they interact with people in the community. It encourages students to become socially responsible and culturally aware through learning together in real life contexts that are relevant to them. It challenges them to develop their creativity, critical thinking and initiative.

In 2012 all the Year 9 students explored the questions below in gradually widening contexts using their own cultural knowledge, cooperation, collaboration, the eight learning areas and community resources. They worked in fours each week with all the other members of their school whanau.

and want to relay their passion of said person, then we shall train them to do so with decorum, eloquence and efficiency.

Through the introduction of the Writing Portfolio standard this year, the students learned that they can choose their own content within the subject of English with relative freedom, but they must still be able to interpret and convey their understanding of that content.

Sure, some content is better than others and we as English teachers used to pride ourselves in being the ones who decided that. However if the simple practise of reading is carried out on a regular basis by a student, then he or she may gain the confidence to choose good content themselves, or even join the fun of the popular crowd and choose the content with the most YouTube hits.

We can then simply train them to analyse it on a perceptive level by understanding the gyrating, trotting and pelvic thrusting dance of a man singing in Korean about materialistic inner city coffee drinkers, whose mindless consumerism is an ever increasing symptom of a collapse in social responsibility among the working class. This, by the way, is what we in the English department ‘get’ from the horse dance.

A few thousand years ago the Mayans predicted that the world would end in 2012. As English teachers at MHS, we felt the world had ended when Gangnam Style became the number one song in the world and yet the only English language phrase contained within this ‘lovely’ song is, “Heaaaay Sexy Ladaaaaay!”

After a while though, the song grew on us and like so many pointless pieces of pop before it, settled into the fabric of life and found its place among the literati of our department. After all, there is more meaning to English as a subject than words and phrases.

Media which is rich in symbolism and imagery can be created from minimal forms of language just as well as they can be created by fluent, complex and eloquently chosen words. So, Gangnam Style was worthy of analysis and it managed to find its way into the halls of the school and the minds of the teachers. It was particularly well parodied by Pounamu Whanau and some excellent ‘trot’ dances were executed by the deans and teachers of Pounamu.

So, what does this mean? Well, maybe it means that the study of English is evolving. Maybe the subject is morphing and finding its way beyond the language it relies on. After all, Gangnam Style is almost entirely performed in Korean.

Yet the students, as the wonderful Pounamu video has proven, relate to it on several levels. On the surface, the dance from the music video has gone just as viral as the song itself; it brings people together and provides a context within which we can laugh. On a deeper level it requires a lot of what we call in the English department, inference or figuring out.

What is the song about? Well, if you asked your average Manurewa

High student, they would likely tell you that they have no idea really but maybe it’s about sexy ladies, or on the other hand maybe it’s about drinking coffee? Whatever they decide for themselves, one thing is clear, it’s not about Shakespeare and it’s not really English. So, how can we, the English department step in? How can we facilitate the understanding of such abstract media as Gangnam Style?

This slightly rotund South Korean man, who sings his song in his native language and bounces around on an invisible Shetland Pony, is garnering more interest from our students than the wonderful literature of Witi Ihimaera or the intriguing short fiction of Owen Marshall. And not only that, he is somehow driving action and interaction and creating social energy between students! How can we compete with this?

Well, we can’t. Nor should we try.

Clearly, we are not a vessel catering for curious students who want a voyage through the classics. We are not a repository of literary discussion or a club for book critics. No, we are now a source of skill acquirement, and the skills we need to impart are critical thinking and analytical skills. We are here to impart the methodology of making connections, joining the dots between popular social media pieces,. finding out why media and texts are relevant. (And as a consequence, hopefully, some residual good music taste skills.)

Unfortunately for the English teachers of today, we are no longer needed to choose what content is valuable enough for students’ attention. They will do that by themselves as YouTube, Facebook and desktop tagging has shown. We are needed, however, to guide them in the most efficient ways to interpret, re-create and re-communicate that content for a particular functional purpose.

Year Nine Poetry Successful creative writing conjures detailed images in the reader’s mind. Sometimes very small descriptions lead to big images and when done properly, mystery is also created. The students were asked to find creative ways to evoke vivid images using specific adjectives and verbs. They were told to include a type of weather, time of day or night and something from a dream or special memory they have. The best pieces would represent a tiny moment from a larger story. Educational Support Centre Mrs Gargiulo was appointed to a full-time position in the centre at the beginning of the year, having covered the junior class during Term 3 of 2011.

She has and is continuing to be an inspiration to us all, with her enthusiasm and caring of our students.

We would like to thank all the staff who have welcomed our students into their rooms. Special mention must go to Mr Chapman, who somehow managed to weld us into a pretty respectable Basketball team, good enough to take out the Special Olympics Basketball title for 2012.

In addition to the Basketball, our students participated and experienced varying degrees

of success in Athletics, Soccer, Ten Pin Bowling and Swimming.

Our senior students have once again been able to attend, and benefitted from, Special Needs courses at MIT and work experience programmes.

One of our themes for the year was Ocean and Sealife and so toward the end of Term 3 we visited Kelly Tarltons. We were very impressed with how much of what we had taught in class had been retained, and how many questions our students were able to answer.

Another key player in our team who has worked tirelessly with our senior students, and was rightly praised by the SSR team that visited earlier in the year is Kay Daly.

Kay is our specialist O & M ( Orientation and Mobility) instructor who works with students to implement independent travel to MIT/ work etc and also helps transition our students into the workforce on leaving school.

As usual we farewell a number of our senior students this year, many of whom are familiar faces around school.

Our leavers this year are, Matthew Dearlove, Elijah Morunga, Oula Naddaf, Neron Siafa and Ashlee Uerata. We take this opportunity to wish them well on life’s journey.

ESOL Department 2012 has been another successful year for the ESOL department. It is very rewarding as always, to see students, who come to New Zealand knowing very little English, develop their confidence in the ability to communicate using the English language.

This year has seen the continued development of NCEA assessments in the senior school. Students are able to have the opportunity to earn credits towards passing NCEA at all levels of English language acquisition – from ESOL Level 1 to Level 3 and Level 1 English Unit Standard literacy units. Our reception students, besides the core subject studies, had PE and cooking classes as well. These have ensured that our courses meet the students’ needs and that all of our students have a chance to achieve at their very best!

We respect and celebrate different cultures. Over a hundred students studied ESOL this year from reception level through to the advanced ESOL courses. Students came from different countries and language backgrounds as migrants from Asia and Pasifika countries or foreign fee-paying students.

Our reception class welcomed a group of refugee students from AUT and showed their appreciation of different cultures.

Even though our students arrive knowing not much English, as well

as not a lot about New Zealand culture and lifestyle, our students are respectful because they are ready to adjust to the changes. English is their second, third or maybe even fourth language, which is a huge accomplishment. They are determined, motivated, and diligent.

Congratulations to our students who have made pleasing progress. We were very proud to see our students getting firsts in mainstream subjects including English, Practical Art, Soft Technology, Hospitality, Economics and other subjects.

I would like to thank my team Ms Park and teacher aides Mrs Carla O’Neill, Mrs Chrissie Lee and Mr Tonga Siope.

I would also like to thank our reception subject teachers Mr Zifeng Liu, Mr Hogan Chapman, Ms Aida Faaeteete and Mrs Prem Chandra. Without their support, the year would not have been as successful.

often the students’ extended family. I was lucky to meet so many wonderful people on these visits. At school, I had frequent meetings with each student both individually and in groups. I loved seeing these students grow and mature in their time at MH. As their language skills grew, so did their confidence and ability to express themselves. I will treasure that for the rest of my life. Another of my treasured memories is having our international students around to our house for dinner along with staff from school with whom I worked to thank them for their support.

Dinner for 30 or 40 people who really appreciated it took some organising but I loved doing it.

Unfortunately, earlier this year, in the middle of an interview with a homestay family I suffered a mini stroke, and although I recovered quickly, I felt that I could not do the justice to the job that I wanted to achieve, so I resigned. Since then, I have had another more serious stroke,

which put me in hospital for six weeks.

Fortunately, I have made a nearly full recovery, and I realise how much I miss the contact with the students, their parents and their teachers.

It was a pleasure to work with Mrs Metcalfe as she always had the interests of the international students at heart and wanted to make their stay in New Zealand as good as it could be. It hardly seems that 10 years have passed since I took on the role of Homestay Co-ordinator for International Students at MH. We have been so busy since then with meeting and getting to know many wonderful teenagers who have enriched our lives with their multi-cultural inputs. Initially I was very concerned that I would let the students down because I was not sure what their needs would be. When an opportunity came for us to have a student we leapt at the chance, as we thought that this was the best way to learn for ourselves what issues might arise. Since our first student we have had eight other students to share their lives with us.

We treated them just as we had our own kids and that seemed to work well for them and for us. At times we have also had the parents of our international students to stay with us.

I made visits to every student’s homestay family every term who were

Gateway Gateway is a programme funded by the Tertiary Education Commission that enables senior students to learn and gain NZQA credits while in the workplace. It is designed to make learning relevant and to broaden student’s options while enabling schools to help their students by strengthening the range of career pathways.

Gateway has been hugely successful again this year. In total, 70 of our senior students have had the opportunity to spend time in the work force in industries covering Aviation, Banking, Early Childhood, Electrical, Hospitality and Catering, Retail and finally, Travel and Tourism.

Many of these opportunities are provided by local businesses who year

Gateway Students Early Childhood Education Luisa Kalonihea Waking up early in the morning every Wednesday for six weeks, not for ‘SCHOOL’ but for ‘GATEWAY’ was a great experience for me, because I was able to experience working in the career I plan on doing in the future. I worked in ‘The Garden’s Early Childhood Centre’ as a student helper for children between the ages 3-5. Each morning at 7:30am I would be there setting up the rooms and greeting parents as they

after year continue to work together with the school and those students enrolled in the Gateway programme. For that we are extremely grateful as without them this programme would not be possible. A special mention must be given to Happy Days Restaurant who generously offer work experience to 4 of our Hospitality and Catering students per day in their restaurant throughout Terms 2 and 3. Amazing!

This year we have trialled 2 new programmes. The first was with Travel Careers and Training (TCT) for students wanting to be Flight Attendants. This was an 11 day programme spread out over the April and July school holidays. Students covered all aspects of flight training in the purpose built 737 Cabin Trainer and concluded the experience observing how it was all really done on a flight to Wellington!

Throughout the day they also visited the Wellington TCT office, tourist attractions, Te Papa and various aspects of Wellington airport before flying home.

The second new programme was with the Electrical Training Company, otherwise known as ETCO. This was for students interested in pursuing a trade as Electricians. This programme was also run in the school holidays and involved students attending what I have begun to call “Electrical camp”.

Selected students spend a week at a facility in Ramarama where they are provided with a room, 3 good meals a day and the opportunity to do some pratical hands-on electrical work together with some theory that earns them 11 credits at L2 towards their NCEA. Not a bad way to spend your holidays if you ask me!

Some of the students enrolled in the programme have written about their experiences below. It is great to hear how much they have all enjoyed it.

dropped off their children. Where there was a group of 5-7 children I would sit with them on the mat and read to them. I loved making them flowers out of paper. Each afternoon I would help the children read, write, draw or name objects, I loved seeing their smile as they learnt new things and got the right answers. The hardest part of doing this work was trying to remember all their names! Otherwise, working with about 25 young children was fun. I was really grateful for this opportunity and hope to become an Early Childhood Teacher in the future.

Travel and Tourism

Alfred Toma The Gateway programme was one of the best things I’ve done in High School. It gave the chance to gain a huge chunk of credits, but not only that, I also got some really great work skills and made some new friends. The work I was supplied with was super easy and it gave me an insight into what the retail world is like. Working at The Warehouse has given me some good work experience that will help me further my career in Communications and Customer Services. I applaud the amount of time Jake Billyeald (Warehouse Mentor) took to help us through our gateway experience. It really was an experience of a life-time.

Nica San Sebastian My experience at Travel Careers and Training during the T1 and T2 holidays was definitely a success. All the expectations I had were definitely met and it was great learning new things, meeting new people and being in a new environment. It was such a remarkable, super fun and amazing experience and would definitely be one of my highlights of this year. I gained a lot of knowledge from the course such as safety demonstration on the onsite 737 cabin trainer, food and beverage service in the 747 training facility. It helped me enhance my world geography knowledge and opened my mind to new jobs within the Travel Industry. I also learnt some airline and aviation technology and some of the major aircraft components. The course also improved my self-confidence and presentation skills both orally and physically as we had to come to course everyday looking like flight attendants in our corporate uniforms with scarfs and black heels. We constantly had to present information orally to an audience and were

given feedback on how to present ourselves better. We flew down to Wellington and explored the airport, Te Papa Museum and TCT Wellington Campus. The flight experience was really fun and it was a great way of finishing off the course. I’m grateful to have been given this AMAZING opportunity. It made me want to be in the travel industry even more than before and I can’t wait to start my career as a Flight Attendant.

Yr 13 Geography This year Geography has allowed us to gain a holistic understanding on life.

In which we don’t just see things , but understand why it is located where it is.The amazing fieldtrips and fact fulled lessons. Have led us to the end in which we see the world from the inside out and the outside in.

Who says Geography’s all about volcanoes? In amongst it all we learnt not only about our own country but our neighboring one too .

Muriwai , just a normal beach to some, but after the adventurous fieldtrip we saw this high energy west coast for what it actually is. The natural features of erosion, transportation and deposition right in front of us. We saw how these processes had changed the natural features such as Motutara Island and the wave cut platform. We saw how all these features were made by natural processes and how human modifications such as gabion baskets were needed to stop coastal erosion.

At the heart of New Zealand tourism is Rotovegas and the good old GC. No, we didn’t learn about the “AUNTIES” in class but we learnt about why loads of New Zealanders want to go and visit the Gold Coast each year.

Rotorua was not a letdown, and what better way to learn about tourism than becoming a tourist yourself. Rotovegas you say ? Sheep shows, skyline sky rides, swoop, scenic views, serenity. Rotorua has it all. The Maori cultural experience was just surreal. They may have lost the pink and white terraces but that wasn’t going to stop them educating the people about the importance of the people and the land, and about caring for the land “Kaitiakitanga. The Geographers this year were all taught the catchphrase “COME TO TE PUIA!” where we were given the challenge of trying to sell this amazing Maori cultural geothermal location to our peers. This allowed us to learn and understand why it is a popular tourist destination. Blowing geysers, a powhiri, Maori cultural shows and Kiwis, Te

Puia was full of excitement. What more could you want? Now Rotorua is known for its adventure tourism , bungee jumping, the swoop, shweeb, free-fall and many more. Just seeing the bungee jumping platform gave us an adrenaline rush. It was the moment to face your fears. As brave students, myself included, were all strapped up to take the jump of a lifetime. 45metres above ground, feeling the wind rush through your face, getting flung around by a single rope, nerves flying everywhere a moment to treasure forever. After a hard day at work exploring Rotorua we headed to Polynesian Spa to unwind and detox in the thermal baths where we just lay there and thought back on our amazing trip.

Yr 12 Geography As part of Year 12 Geography we went on a week trip to Tongariro National Park, in the centre of the north island, a place we had been studying but most of us had never been.

We carried out our research on the streams in Tongariro we all had fun getting wet, although it was cold. We also experienced the famous crossing of Mt Tongariro where the view of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngaruhoe and Mt Tongariro was amazing.

Going up the crossing was hard….

But going down was even harder. We struggled along the way, but because of the support and encouragement from the group we made it to the end… with some grumbles and pain along the way…. But when we had finished it. It made it all worthwhile as it was such an amazing walk to complete with stunning views.

The trip was fun and exciting due to our super cool supervisors, Ms Grant, Mr Hendrikse, Mr Silk and Mr Trevelyan, they looked after us and kept us on task.

And big thanks to Chrissy, Victoria and Kiri our cooks who kept us fed with their awesome food.

We enjoyed each and every moment of this trip, starting with Huka falls and the geothermal station to the mountain environment we worked in, being stranded on the mountainside when the bus broke down with it having to be towed by a digger, and of course the trip to the geothermal hot pools. Overall we gained a lot more geographic knowledge and had a lot of fun.

Yr 11 Geography In Level 1 Geography this year we looked at the world’s most precious resource; water and the effects of volcanic eruptions.

We studied the eruption of Mt St Helens and Mt Tarawera and visited Rangitoto and the Auckland Museum to help us understand how where we live is a very explosive place to be!

The field trip to Rangitoto Island was fun. We climbed to the top of the island where we saw an amazing view over Auckland and looked to the bottom of the crater. A first for most of us. After a trip on the ferry across the harbour we went to Auckland Museum where we visited the shaky house, where we learnt what could happen to Auckland if one of its many volcanoes erupted….

Which we then had to map when we returned to class with Google earth… let’s just say it was a fun day for all… and let’s hope one of Auckland’s volcanoes doesn’t explode!

To be recognized as a student who has studied at the BEST secondary hospitality training school in New Zealand is an honour - The Hospitality Department of this school has recently been awarded the 2012 Excellence in Training Award and we are proud to be part of this success.

Our school is one of the biggest glasshouses for seeding the future of Hospitality. We have the added advantage of having a commercial kitchen with an operational café which sees an increased participation of students who transition to workplaces.

The HAC course gives you the skills needed for real working world experience. To get further, HAC provides programmes which gives you an insight and an understanding about how the industry works. It also provides Barista and First Aid Training.

All theory work that is taught to us by Mrs D Chandra is then backed up by our practical assessments.

During this year, I did not only gain practical skills and hands-on training, I also gained confidence which has helped with my personal growth. At the beginning of the year we were a class of strangers. As the year came to an end we became a family, as we all had to work and communicate together. HAC is the first step if you want to join or learn about the Hospitality industry. You don’t need to have any special talentas the year goes on, you will find what you are good at and what areas need development. The doors of Manners cafe remain open to HAC students and Mrs D Chandra is always available for you, whether it is for training or support.

Music Department 2012 has been another massive year for the music department and a year that has seen significant change. In particular it saw the end of the ‘Mrs Smith Era’ as she moved away from Auckland as her husband had received a promotion. Mrs Smith had been the backbone of the department for so long she was always going to be sadly missed. This did, however, bring the positive in the return of a familiar face.

Mrs Louman had previously been the woodwind specialist here and we were delighted that she applied for our music teacher vacancy. Her generous skill set and knowledge meant she easily outshone a strong field of applicants for the position. Welcome home Mrs Louman!

2012 continued on with previous success stories and added some new ones for good measure.

The ‘Who loves who’ competition debuted this year and asked contestants nationwide to record a cover of a New Zealand song. This was a great chance to revisit the fantastic back catalogue of New Zealand music with students eventually picking to re-record songs

by Crowded House, Split Enz, Six60 and Brooke Fraser Only 20 finalists were picked nationally with three coming from MHS! Well done Michaela Clark, Rachel Fenton and Pele Sea. SmokefreeRockquest This Year we had seven groups represent us at this event, by far the most we have ever had. Special congratulations go to Missy Pelu and the Backdrifters who both made it into the regional final. Special mention to Mr Coulomb for all the long hours helping these bands!

SmokefreePasifikaBeats We had four, twice as many groups, enter this event in 2012 with Mariah McGregor becoming the first performer to make a regional final as a soloist!

Big Sing Choir An amazing year of growth for this Choir.

Miss Cuizon took this over and had immediate success with choir membership, the largest in years. Mrs Louman accompanied the choir and audiences were treated to several brilliant performances.

Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition This year we managed sixteen(!) entries in this competition. Again four songs making the national top 50. Congratulations to David Afoa, Renee Apulu, Caylin Klein and Mariah McGregor who all received the chance to record their songs professionally, be published on CD and receive national radio play. Mariah picked up the award for best alternative song and has had her music played on kiwfm, bfm, the ITM championship final and the TVNZ Good Morning show.

KBB Festival All of our groups performed brilliantly, with special mention to the Symphonic band who really stepped up this year. Keep reading and Mitchell Clark will tell you more about the Senior Concert Band and Jazz Band.

Batterie 100 Strike is a high energy drumming group made up of New Zealand’s most outstanding percussionists, specialising in movement-based, choreographed percussion. Nine of our students got to work with them and with several other Auckland school students performed to a packed audience at Telstra Clear Pacific.

They even performed a piece incorporating a fire element.

Stand Up! Stand Out! Stand Up! Stand Out! features musicians, vocalists and dancers from secondary schools across the Auckland region.

We had several music groups enter this year and Ada Huang on Piano performed at the Finals at Telstra Clear Pacific.

All this is achieved by having a great team with Mr Coulomb, Miss Cuizon, Mrs Louman and Mrs Telford all being exceptional at what they do and we are supported by a group of world class itinerant teachers.

Senior Concert Band First off: all you guys who did mentoring this year (including myself), you got nothin’ on concert band.

Some people think we’re weird for rehearsing so early on weekday mornings, but we’re really no different to any sports team at this school. Sure, we don’t gambol around the field but we still are committed to our ensemble.

Senior Concert Band started bigger than ever this year; we had new players, new repertoire – a new psyche, even.

We were building up for 2013’s trip to Hawaii and we all expected great things.

For the past five years that I’ve been in band, I’ve never seen so much student leadership. Rehearsals proceeded apace, but dedicated section leaders ran sectionals in their own time, helping the newer, younger students improve their standard of musicianship. And the standard was – is – high. You can’t deny the pressure of a gold-winning reputation bearing down on you.

Our annual competition, the KBB Music Festival, began in August. Hopes were high; the level of excitement went through the roof – even one as high as the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Personally, I get a huge amount of satisfaction when playing; hearing the music we produce, well… I don’t want to go on too long.

achieved a Commended award at the KBB Festival. Words can’t express the disappointment. But we were granted a second chance; the school entered the Senior Concert Band in the National Concert Bands Festival, this year held in Hamilton. It was the first time in many years that a band from our school was entered in this competition – none of us knew what to expect. I mean, the acoustic couldn’t get any worse, could it?

Even with my experience performing, I was still nervous as we waited backstage. Then we were on, and all doubt melted away.

Literally. That stage was baking hot.

From the first note, all of us could hear the difference in sound, and that gave us confidence.

Sure, there were a few minor tempo h i c c u p s (hmmm), but all in all we came away satisfied that we had done

a good job. Great was our celebration when we found out that we won GOLD! And that made it all worthwhile.

After that, it was business as usual: new pieces to rehearse, concerts to perform – awards to receive. My high school life wouldn’t be the same without concert band. And I know that as my time at Manurewa High School ends, I’m leaving the Senior Concert Band in good hands.

KBB Music Festival. In each category, one ensemble is awarded ‘Best Performance of a New Zealand Work’. Neither Mr Randle, Mr Coulomb or myself knew any pieces

by New Zealand composers. So why not double-dip, eh?

One thing we always struggle with is having the right instrumentation. Meaning, not everyone is there until crunch time. Still, I started on the piece – a ‘rhythm changes’ – with a catchy triplet-impregnated idiomatic melody and cheesy accompaniment. Gotta love it. By the end of June I still hadn’t named the piece, so Randle and I bounced some ideas around at the school ball of all places. Thus ‘No. 22’ was born.

I must say, computer-created sounds do no justice whatsoever to music. When we started rehearsing No. 22, ah, those saxophone harmonies… suffice to say, it sounded great.

Sooner than we were comfortable with (as usual), the aforementioned ‘crunch time’

was upon us. We had an awesome set, though: No. 22, Martinique, Blackbird, and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. But then disaster struck. Michael Telford, our first trumpet, was hit with a migraine; Ashley Tipene (clarinet) and Michaela Clark (bass) fell sick. But we pulled through to win a bronze award.

At the awards ceremony, I was standing in line waiting to represent our ensemble. “And the ‘Best Performance of a New Zealand Work by a Jazz Band’ goes to... MANUREWA JAZZ BAND” So it was all worth it, in the end. School got a shiny plaque, I got bragging rights, we all got Toffee Pops - I call that a job well done. And it felt so awesome to have my piece announced at Arts Prizegiving.

It’s undefinable, really; that sense of satisfaction. But we had a great time, on our jazzy way.

It becomes habit after a while.

It seeps into your bones; gets you speaking a different language.

The language of jazz.

But amongst the ‘voo-vah’s and ‘beedah’s’, we still find time for jokes. And puns. And Toffee Pops. In fact, more than half of each rehearsal is spent relentlessly mocking at least one band member. But we all love it, really.

Welcome to Jazz Band.

2012 started as the last three have: catchy new pieces like a funky arrangement of The Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’ and an old classic ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’. We welcomed our two amazing female vocalists, Abigail Hyland and Mariah McGregor. And I was asked to compose a piece for us to play.

You see, there’s a special award at the

Maths Department well despite having three different rooms in the course of the year. She became wellliked and well-respected by all her charges.

She made a great effort with the Tongan Group at Polyfest and always went the extra distance helping her students with their mathematics after school. We look forward to the next few years as we watch her and her wonderful tutor group grow together.

The rest of the mathematics staff continued on their merry way. Mr Steve Naidu was back from his year away, reunited with his form class and inspiring his classes with many mysteries. Mr Bimal Singh was an adept statistician and knew all the odds.

Mr Raghu Singh led the International Week once again with great success. Mrs Singh continued to demand the very best from her students and was a force to be reckoned. Ms Prasad enjoyed observing others networking; Ms So’oa’emalelagi once again led the Samoan Group to fine achievements at Polyfest; Mr Hufanga continued with his illustrious rugby career and represented his club at the Singapore and Malaysian Sevens; Mr Vijayakumar ruled the roost over the Year 11 programmes; Mr Henley found the privacy of a new home in P6; and Mr Liu found on the last day with his tutor group that he had become a surprise grandfather.

There have been some fine achievements in Mathematics over the last year. We were delighted in March to hear of the success of Thai Nguyen in gaining a subject scholarships in Calculus, the first for many years. The numeracy rate at Level 1 had

risen to 91% from 87% putting us well ahead of most schools in our region.

This will be a hard act to follow with the changes in place at Level 1 numeracy for this year.

We were well represented by four teams at the Counties-Manukau Mathex Competition held at Waiuku College, and largely the same teams competed with honour against the best that Auckland could offer at Kohimarama’s ASB Stadium a week later. The teams found the challenge tough, but good nights were enjoyed by all.

In the annual Australian Mathematics Competition we had five students achieve a Distinction which placed them in the top 10% of the very select group of competitors. Congratulations to Ashlee Cochrane, Anna Siafolau, Adam Scott, Cathy Stainthorpe and Jessie Chen for their fine achievements.

The New Year will bring many challenges. The re-alignment of the new standards progresses to Level 3. There is a new course structure at level 2 with the introduction of Statistics as a new subject. There will be further development of our courses to include greater technology and hopefully more diversification of our teaching and learning styles. Finally there will be an ERO visit, and of course we all look forward to that.

It has been a year of both frustration and elation in the Mathematics Department. The early part of the year was quite unsettled. The refurbishment of the Main Block took much longer than expected and some of us became a mobile lot, termed peripatetic, having to move around the school from room to room. Sometimes our neighbours didn’t even like us. It was as if we came from a leper colony. We gained some great new ideas, though, such as having support staff to wipe the whiteboards.

Eventually our make-shift workroom in P6 became a thing of the past. No longer did we breed mosquito larvae in the water tray. No longer did the coffee cups become mouldy and the teatowels soiled. Instead, we had our own brand new quarters. It was called the Akoranga Block, presumably named after the bus station on the Northern Motorway. Our new classrooms; the new workroom; and our own computer room were a standard of accommodation that we had never experienced before.

The curriculum challenges continued this year with the new re-aligned standards reaching Level 2. We had managed a fairly seamless transition at Level 1 and so it proved at Level 2.

Mrs Lal bore the brunt of the changes and to her credit the Level 2 courses showed a further improvement on the previous year with better results across the broad range of student abilities.

There was reasonable stability in the staffing of the department in 2012. Mr Subash Chandar was on leave during the year as he tripped around the world taking in the sights and helping the disadvantaged. At the end of the year we were disappointed to hear that he would not return but would take up an opportunity at Ormiston College. He was a popular teacher; a lively character; and one who always went the extra distance to help out his fellow colleagues and his appreciative students. His classroom was always a hive of activity. He had a passion for teaching and his mastery of the new Smartboard will be a particular memory.

This zest and enthusiasm reached beyond the classroom to his work in Ahi Whanau as a dean as well as the extracurricular activities such as soccer, camps and sports betting. He will be sorely missed and is a big loss.

Media Studies GOOD MORNING MANUREWA!

The first ever Manurewa High School newscast was born in Term One this year thanks to the initiative of Year 13 students Caylin Klein and Moemoe Leuluai-Sega.

‘Good Morning Manurewa’ was student led, with the roles of news presenter, reporter, camera operator, teleprompter and editor performed by students of all ages and levels of experience. Broadcast daily on Rewanet, the newscasts were well received by the school and wider community. They featured the daily notices and also covered other significant news stories such as international week performances and interviews with school Polyfest groups. With a dedicated TV studio in the new Akoranaga block, there is the potential for school newscasting to be even bigger and better in future. Help the ‘Good Morning Manurewa’ legacy live on by getting involved in 2013!

SENIOR MEDIA STUDIES FILM PRODUCTION As always, the most “challenging”, “rewarding”, “stressful” and “fun” component of the senior media studies courses was film production. For the better part of a term, teams of students worked together to conceptualize, design, plan, film and edit their cinematic masterpieces. Music videos, short films and documentaries/ mockumentaries were produced by Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13 students respectively. The films ranged from entertaining to touching to humorous to extremely ambitious and thought-provoking. Here are a few snippets from the 2012 cohort...

Mentoring In partnership with Foundation for Youth Development, Manurewa High School embarked on the Stars Peer Mentoring programme this year.

The programme encompasses our Manurewa Values of Respect, Excellence, Whanaungatanga and Akoranga. During the programme our Year 12 and Year 13 students have strived to make a positive difference in the lives of Year 9 and 10 students in our school community. The impact on the wider school environment has been noticeable.

Every week for three terms our mentors attended training sessions in their own time at 8am. During these sessions our Mentor leaders were taken through their lesson focus for the week’s session delivered on a Friday during extended Whanau Tutor time. Our Foundation for Youth Development Facilitator Whaea Tamara Elliot did a wonderful job in guiding, leading, encouraging and inspiring our students throughout these sessions. Whaea Tamara is an asset to our school and knows many of our students through her links with the Manurewa Community.

The importance of organisational skills has been reinforced. The Mentors learnt that you can’t go into a classroom of mentees unprepared or having not communicated a plan with your other leaders. They have taught problem solving skills and solved their own problems, gaining an appreciation for the various backgrounds of their mentees. They have participated in new activities and experiences, often

outside their own comfort zone, challenging themselves in order to achieve personal growth.

The Stars Graduation celebration organised by Whaea Tamara for our Mentor leaders was a wonderful way to finish our first year of Stars Peer Mentoring. The gifts Whaea Tamara had carved for some of our Mentor Stars were truly special and the recipients were honoured by this acknowledgement.

I would like to acknowledge the support of the tutor teachers, Whanau team and Senior Administration during the year.

The programme could not run without your input, energy and enthusiasm. To see tutor teachers participating with their tutor classes during mentoring really epitomised our Manurewa Way and fostered better class relationships with their Whanau tutor.

Lastly I would like to acknowledge the incredible work done in implementing the programme done by Whaea Tamara. Thank you on behalf of our staff and students as you have gone above and beyond in helping our school this year.

Science Department Science Fair 2011 - Mrs F Colyer Once again our students did well in the annual MIT South Auckland Regional Science and Technology Fair. Amy van de Weg (MHS graduate from 2011) was there and delivered a speech as last year’s winner. Then it was onto the 2012 participants and it was pleasing to see our students were called up to the podium a number of times. Our students looked so well presented and I was very proud of how they conducted themselves.

We won a number of Highly Commended awards, in the Physical World Category Cedric Wiremu (10 PSZ)was recognised for his project investigating the Physics of Mau Rakau (Maori Martial arts). Another Highly Commended was awarded in the Consumer Science category to Tryphaena Kumar for her investigation into Kamut flour as compared to wholemeal flour and its health impacts.

Paul Stainthorpe also walked away with Highly Commended in the Consumer Science category for his project looking at the rehydration benefits of coconut water as compared to commercial sports drinks.

First Place in the Consumer Science category went to Garling Wu with an excellent investigation into using smoke point of oils as a measure of oxidative damage caused by incorrect storage.

Jaspreet Singh was awarded Third

Place in Senior Science for his highly creative project in which he developed three new ‘secondary school friendly’ methodologies for testing antioxidant activity of foods. Prior to his work there was no way a school student could assess these levels.

Another great moment was seeing us win Best Project in Fair by a Maori Student – Cedric Wiremu did us proud here.

Finally, one of the big prizes, the Otago University Award – a fully sponsored week long trip to Otago University Summer Science School was won by Susan Ly, for her highly relevant investigation into the starch content of different types of flours and their effects on blood glucose levels of diabetics.

There were 21 schools represented, and 207 entries – so the competition was stiff and it was great to see our students going up. Their parents all came to support them too – and that was lovely as well, we know parents are a huge factor in the success of our young people.

None of this would happen without Heather Wilson and Liz Palmer (the ‘lab ladies’) who are the most supportive and helpful lab. technicians any student could ever hope for! Any budding young scientist who thinks they may like to have a go at Science Fair next year can rest assured that they will be well looked after. We have superb equipment, great technicians, a proud history of doing well and most of all – this event will open many doors for those aiming to go further in the Sciences and life in general.

03 BIOLOGY Liggins Institute Trip Level 3 Biology is a full year course that allows students to gain Level Three credits towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).

This course offers three internal and four external standards. Two of the internal standards were based on contemporary biological issues and applications of biotechnological techniques.

The Liggins Institute (located in Auckland city) provided an excellent opportunity for students to explore the various techniques used in modern day laboratories. This visit enabled the students to have hands on experience in using these modern day facilities. Students gained a better understanding of processes such as gel electrophoresis, DNA profiling and PCR methods. This knowledge was then assessed in a written exam worth three credits.

The teacher in charge of the Level 3 Biology course is Mrs K. Govind (TIC Biology). The Liggins Institute day trip was a huge success and students performed well in this standard. I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation

to Mrs Flynn for her help in organising this trip and to Miss Simpson for her support with the Year 13 students during the day trip. I would also like to thank the Science Department for their continual support.

PE Health Expo HEALTH PROMOTION AT MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL. 2012 has been a busy year. Mrs Stanners, Ms Stapleton and Ms Simpson were influential in setting up the school’s Health Council, with representatives from all year levels, which has gone on to organise and run many school health events and initiatives.

We started off Term 2 with Pink shirt day on Friday 18th May when students and staff proudly wore something Pink and the “What you do makes a difference” t-shirts to show their commitment to challenge homophobic bullying. Term 2 also saw the hugely popular Theatre in Education Sexwise group come into the school as part of the HPE programme to raise awareness about healthy sexuality.

We followed up the success of Pink Shirt Day with Daffodil Day on the Friday 31st August where the students and staff wore Yellow and bought daffodils in support of raising awareness for cancer in New Zealand. Also during Term 3 the Dental Team from Raukura Hauora O Tainui Trust were based at school providing dental checks and basic dental treatments for all our students. This was very successful with the Dental team reaching their targets of seeing over 1200 students helping keep the lovely smiles on the faces of our beautiful students.

This brings us to Term 3 where our Health Council and Level 2 Health students, supported by Miss Dravitzki and Ms Stapleton did a fantastic job putting on our very first Health Expo here at school on the 10th- 12th of September. An event that is now firmly on the calendar as it proved invaluable in raising awareness and allowing our students to make the connections with our community that will allow them to become healthy decision makers in the future.

The students networked and contacted external agencies and organisations and then brought them in to school to promote their services. We had many and varied groups including Youthline, NZ Blood, Raukura Hauora O Tainui Trust, Rainbow Youth, Lifeline Aotearoa, Legal Advocacy, National Heart Foundation, Like Minds, ALAC & Family Planning. One of the most popular stalls was the “smoothie bike” where students and staff could pedal to make their own fruit smoothie. Keri Hurman one of the presenters from Family Planning was so impressed with the event she wrote in her article featured in the Health Promoting Schools newsletter “the real Kudos goes to your wonderful Senior Health classes that created a fantastic student driven event that should inspire the school and the community for years to come.” Through this event Manurewa High School has been invited to become the first ever

Health Promoting Secondary School in the country.

We would also like to pay special mention to our sponsors for the expo: Securecom for providing 3 Wireless Keyboards for spot prizes, The Good Guys in Botany for sponsoring the “Wee for a Wii” promotion and providing the Wii console as the star prize.

This promotion focused on raising sexual health awareness and 400 students signed up for a sexual health check with the school health clinic.

Epicurean Dairy Co. for donating yoghurt, Thomsons Foodservice and Orchard Gold for donating berries for the smoothie bike and Tumeke Cycle Space for the loan of the “smoothie bike”. The success of this has also meant that we have been able to carry on with Smoothie Day every Tuesday.

During the Expo we also held our annual Blood donor collection day on Friday 14th September. This was hugely successful as we managed to beat last year’s total by collecting 84 units of blood which will save up to 252 lives.

We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved this year in promoting health and look forward to 2013 so we can push the boundaries even further in helping our school and community become even more health conscious.

how the Welsh integrate the Welsh language (CYMRAEG) with the English language. We are looking forward to seeing new strategies implemented here with our own Te Reo. There must have been something in the staff water container as there were a high proportion of weddings this year in the department. First it was Ms Kiff and her partner JR who surprised many by having an engagement party which in fact turned out to be the wedding ‘after-match’ function and now is Mrs Reynolds. Next cab off the rank was Mr Clemas who finally got married to his partner of 16 years, Tracey in April.

In Mr Clemas’s own words “all good things take time”. Finally in October Miss Burnside took the plunge and married Scott and now is Mrs Davies.

Congratulations to you all.

Again the school is fortunate that a large number of PE staff use their own valuable time to help coach/manage sports teams at Manurewa High School.

Watkins and Chapman coached the 1st XV who were crowned Counties Champions. They also won Coaching team of the year for the school. Miss McCall, Miss Dravitzki and Mrs Davies worked their magic with their netball teams under some trying conditions.

Mr Alton took the junior premier football team and Miss Spraggon the girls 1st XI football team, who attained their highest position at the National Tournament.

Miss Hunter not only managed the Colts Rugby side to championship glory but also both the premier senior and junior boys volleyball teams as well. Mrs Reynolds took the mammoth coaching and transport managing role for the Orienteering, Nav Quest, Get 2 Go and Hillary Challenge teams.

Next year, we welcome back Mr Render who has had a year and a half sabbatical teaching in Japan and touring Europe.

However, we lose a highly valued staff member who has been an integral member of the department since 2005.

She has been a key in the continual development and drive for excellence, this department seeks. Miss Spraggon is a staunch supporter of the subject and department, a stalwart of the school, football coach extraordinaire, Assistant Head of Learning Area, Te O Marama Whanau dean, an exemplary teacher. She has decided to leave us to start something new in the Northern Territory of Australia. We will miss her energy, expertise, professionalism and her ability to interact well with both students and staff alike. However, we will not miss her volleyball or Badminton skills. We wish her and Doug all the very best in their new endeavours.

Well that’s it; we would like to take the time to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.

2012 Physical Education and Health Department

This year provided the PE and Health department a chance to embed our school’s four key values which are Respect, Excellence, Whanaungatanga and Akoranga into the PE and Health curriculum.

Respect : The continual development of our Whanau system this year enabled our junior students to wear a striking new Physical Education uniform. Each Whanau Tutor Class wore the colour of their Whanau as well as having our ‘Manurewa Kite’ embroidered on the shirt and shorts. The light modern style presented not only an opportunity to look fantastic but another chance for students to display pride in their appearance and to their Whanau.

Although we lost 1 period of junior PE a week this year we have integrated our Junior PE and Health programmes together to meld an engaging curriculum. The aim is to mix the best of each subject into a programme that our students gain mutual respect for both the physical and holistic aspects of the subject.

Excellence: There have been a number of outstanding examples of excellence from students in PE and Health. We encourage all of our students to Piki atu ki te Rangi or Aim High and here are just a few who have; Nick Voke received an Excellence course endorsement for PE as well as top in class in 03 PED, the following students were top in their respective classes/courses, Stanley Smith in 03 Sport, Lucy Tautogi in 02 PED, Aaron Levae-Faapaia-Tualatasi in 02 Sport, Melevea Lo’Amanu in 01 Sport, Keanu Low in 01 PED, Garling Wu in 02 Outdoor Ed, Stephanie Clayton in 03 Outdoor Ed, Keerthana Rajasekaran in 01 Health, Vetri Krishnamoorthy in 02 Health and Tracy Clifton in 03 Health.

These students are just the tip of the iceberg as many students, both junior and senior, have achieved well this year and we could not possibly fill this space with their list of achievements.

Whanaungatanga: Throughout the year there have been a number of camps and trips that the students partake in which encourage Whanaungatanga (working together) among the students.

The senior camps concentrate on values and key competencies like social responsibility, leadership, developing self, planning and evaluating. These are opportunities for students to bond with their peers and teachers, work under pressure, persevere, be resilient and get out of their comfort zone. The Year 10 camp is a further opportunity for our junior students to experience education outside the classroom in the stunning environment of Tawharanui.

There have been a number of positive examples of our PE and Health students doing splendid work in the school

community. The Sport and Health Councils have done a fantastic job of involving the students of Manurewa High to extol the virtues of healthy living and exercise. They delivered a very successful Health expo in Term 3 and allowed students to partake in organised sporting competitions during the year. Our Level 2 Sport class developed a strong link with our neighbouring primary school Homai, where our Year 12 students coached a number of juniors in a variety of sports once a week. Our Level 3 Sport students were assessed on the ability to plan, implement and review a coaching session involving our Year 9 students.

It’s a testament to their tenacity that they succeeded to a high level.

Akoranga: Is the love of learning and we encourage our students to take charge of their learning by developing good work habits such as using their planners, being prepared for class, completing work, assignments, homework, revising for tests and exams. This process starts straight away in our junior programme with the Year 9 ‘Let’s work together’ unit and culminates in Year 10 with the ‘Tournament’ unit, where the emphasis is on students taking control of their learning by understanding their roles in a team and being responsible for that role. Due to the demands of NCEA the senior students have to adapt, improvise and overcome to continue the journey of becoming life-long learners.

Staff Report: The year began with a team of 11 staff, one down from the 12 from last year. The team leader Miss ‘styles’ Story was again at the helm with Miss ‘McCall did you go to cross fit this morning’ Spraggon as her able assistant. The experienced crew of Miss ‘put it in email’ Kiff, Mr ‘improvise, overcome and adapt ’ Clemas, Miss ‘Hekia Parata’ McCall, Mr ‘ancient coaching legend’ Chapman, Miss ‘Tongan princess’ Dravitzki, Miss ‘former manager of the year’ Hunter, Ms ‘who?’ Stapleton, Miss ‘salty’ Burnside, and Mr ‘can you say something intelligent?’ Alton was the team that started the year. However, due to huge numbers applying for our courses we had to find room for another highly trained and technically advanced staff member to join the already efficient and effective team.

Unfortunately we couldn’t find any of those so we had to settle for Mr ‘cackling parrot’ Watkins.

We welcomed Mr Watkins of Nga Puhi decent who was freshly plucked from the NZ Graduate School of Education in Christchurch into the department. He soon settled in to life at Rewa and was an integral part of the successful 1st XV coaching team alongside the highly respected and pension in waiting, Mr Chapman.

During Term 2 holidays the staff attended the annual PENZ conference in Rotorua where it was a great opportunity to hear from key note speakers and undertake workshops to further develop professionally and acquire new skills.

Miss McCall applied and then was accepted to travel to Wales to look at their Bi-Lingual educational system. Thanks to the British Linking Minds Scholarship, she was fortunate enough to observe and learn

Vision Resource Centre esteem, empathy and motivation. At the camp the students were exposed to all the skills that play an important part in the life of students who are blind or low vision.

Technology for the students who are blind and low vision have taken off in the last few years and we endeavour to keep up with the latest assistive technology developments.

Many of our students that are low vision now use laptop computers with speech synthesizers and magnification software as well as digital cameras to capture work from the whiteboard. Our senior students have I Pads to access the internet for research work and assignments. Students that are blind use BrailleNotes (Braille input computers) including access to internet and windows based programs.

We are continually updating and amending our equipment as well as our huge resource collection of Braille, Large print and electronic document materials and therefore ensuring that the students who attend the resource centre have a superb resource immediately to hand on site.

This year the students attended Immersion Courses held by BLENNZ. The students experienced a full range of technology options to successfully access the school curriculum. The courses provided our senior students to consider choices to successfully transition through school and to life beyond school.

Assistive technology applications for equipment for students have been sent to the Ministry of Education for upgrades and also updated/new equipment. All these applications were successful. It is a fact that the further implementation of technology can only increase the chances of all our students reaching their full academic potential.

The students also participated in many sporting activities across the school and abroad. Abraham Sovea participated in the Rugby Boys team and well Junior Waka Ama. All students participated in the Sport Ability Day held at St Kentigern School on 26th September. They had lots of fun and laughter playing Goal ball and Blind Cricket.

The students wanted the games to be a part of the school and asked Halberg Trust to set up some sporting activity at school.

This happened in Term four where students and PE staff members played Goal ball in the Gym during interval on Tuesdays. This ended on a high note where the students beat the teachers in the final game.

Abraham Sovea, Justin Hammond and Naqibullah Alizadeh also went to the North Island Ski Camp for beginners on 29-31 October. The purpose of the programme is for students who are blind/vision impaired

to have an experience of skiing. They stayed at the Orewa beach Top 10 Holiday Park and visited the Waiwera Hot Pools during the Camp time.

Freedom Nathan participated in Music competitions on several occasions.

She also had her song recorded in a studio (Studio 203) with Mr Randle in the Music Department. She has an amazing talent in composing songs and performing. Freedom will also be going on the Year 10 Camp at Tawharanui Reginal Park on 19-23 November where she will participate in snorkeling, swimming, tandem bike riding, hiking and team building activities. Lavinia Vehikite will be going to a Beauty Extravaganza on 11th December where she will meet the apprentices at the Cut Above Academy where she will have a hair session which include wash and blow wave styling. She will also experience a facial and make-up session.

Academically all our students achieved to the best of their ability and we are very proud of them. They are highly motivated to be successful. Such achievements are reflected across the wider school when they participate in programmes alongside their sighted peers. Skilled in the use of assistive technology, supported by the appropriate accessible format materials and specialist support by the team in the VRC, they engage in learning with enthusiasm and success.

So to our students, big congratulations!

They have worked hard and achieved much this year.

At the end of this year 2012, we say goodbye to Joshua Nathan who will be going to either Auckland or Victoria University to pursue his studies in Law. We also say goodbye to Mrs M Capper who after working many years in the VRC is retiring. We wish to thank her for all her hard work and efforts with all past and present students. While saying goodbye to a few students, we also welcome our new students who will be starting at the beginning of 2013: Michael Chopra Yr9, Campbell Dawson Yr9 and Inoke (Fono) Payne Yr9.

2013 will bring with it the renovation and construction of a new room for the Vision Resource Centre and also a range of programmes and technology aimed at learner success and increased achievement. We look forward to yet another successful year with our students.

The Vision Resource Centre (VRC) at Manurewa High School continues to provide high quality education services to students who are blind and low vision. This tradition of service began in 1966 when Homai National School for the Blind, now Blind and Low Vision Education Network New Zealand (BLENNZ), established the Vision Resource Centre. Through the years there have been many changes in technology and teaching approaches, but the basic philosophy has remained essentially unchanged: - Encourage and empower students who are blind or low vision to achieve in all aspects of their lives through education, communication and self-advocacy.

The Centre is unique in a way that it is the only Centre of this kind in New Zealand where resources are produced on site and a wide selection of Braille, Large Print and Electronic resources are readily available to students. The Centre is managed by a Resource Teacher of Vision (Mrs B Biggs) of BLENNZ Auckland and a team of teacher aides from Manurewa High School (Mrs D Grey, Mrs C Lee, Mrs M Capper and Mrs H Wood).

The Vision Resource Centre has placed great importance on the need to develop students’ self-confidence and life skills. All students are empowered with a “can do” attitude and tackle their daily tasks with confidence.

Manurewa High School funds its own Orientation and Mobility Instructor (Kay Daly- Moving Forward LTD).

Kay helps our students learn how to be comfortable in their surroundings and safely get from place to place.

She also includes daily living skills to help students be more independent in tasks like dressing, food preparation, shopping, and managing money. Kay and her team have been an inspiration and key in the transition of our senior students to their tertiary settings.

In March 2012, Justin Hammond, Lavinia Vehikite, Kahurangi Rain, Naqibullah Alizadeh and Adam (Holo) Tafea went on the RNZFB weekend camp that has been fully sponsored by the Remuera Rotary Club. The purpose of the weekend is for students to have fun with their peers, while enjoying outdoor activities and music in the evening. The programme offered peer support activities aimed at establishing existing and new friendships. It is also a time to enhance self learning, self responsibility, self-confidence, self-

Textiles Technology Textiles has gone from strength to strength this year with students designing and producing their own ball gowns and wearing them to the ball!

Our proudest moment came when Nica SanSebastian entered her ball gown for the ‘YMCA Walk the Line Young Designers Show’ held at the Viaduct Events Centre for New Zealand Fashion Week and modelled it. (Read her full story in this magazine!!)

Alongside this, students have been producing garments and accessories all year!

New Zealand Fashion Week Nica San Sebastian My experience at New Zealand Fashion Week was beyond amazing! I’m still a bit high on life from this sensational day, so I’ll keep things brief: On September 8th 2012 the big day had finally arrived where I got to model my own garment in the runway of the ‘YMCA Walk the Line Young Designers Show’ held at Viaduct’s Events Centre for New Zealand Fashion Week. It was an annual fashion show run by youth people where young designers got to showcase their individual designed garment/s and compete for the title Young Designers 2012 Award.

I entered the garment that I made for my school ball, a gold cocktail dress with removable lace overlay and asymmetrical chiffon draping inspired

by Chanel Fall Couture Collection. Though I didn’t win, the fashion show was definitely a success! The experience was remarkable and I feel so lucky to have been given this amazing opportunity to participate in this event, since I’ve always wanted to watch or even be a part of a fashion runway show. All the expectations I had were definitely met and I had an amazing time at the rehearsal and on the fashion show day. I met a lot of new people from different schools, professional hairdressers and make-up artists from ‘Samala Robinson Academy’ and ‘Servilles Academy’, the ‘Raise up n’ Represent’ Youth Crew who organized the event and made sure everything was running smoothly, people from the fashion industry like the “FOUREYES” guys- Danny, Mino, Alex and Chin, fashion bloggers.

They created the FOUREYES fashion blog as an outlet for their shared interest in fashion, beautifully capturing the individual style of everyday people on the street. FOUREYES were guest blogging for TV3 throughout NZFW and also judged us on the rehearsal day and picked out the winning garment. It was really great to be in ‘YMCA Walk the Line Young Designers Show’ this year. I was really excited as the show was double the size and I was very pleased with my garment. It was really amazing to be a part of New Zealand Fashion Week in this way and with so many other young designers. It was such an amazing show to be involved in with a lot of hype and energy in it.

I was also very keen to show some designs I have been working on and having the opportunity to show them at New Zealand Fashion Week was a definite incentive. This experience was definitely one of my highlights of 2012 and would love to do it again next year.

Technology Trades Academy This year the Manurewa High School became the first school in New Zealand to be awarded the status of a ‘Trades Academy School’ without having to be joined with other schools.

This means that in conjunction with Manukau Institute of Technology and other partners from industry, the school can now offer students exciting new courses in Engineering and Construction.

This will allow Manurewa High School students to gain marketable skills desperately needed in the job market and which will lead on to exciting career opportunities.

Future courses in Catering, Hospitality, Tourism, Business and Computing are also planned.

The 02 and 03 Trade Academy Construction students made miniature children’s picnic tables as part of their course.

Working in teams, the project not only went towards credits for their qualification but each table was sold and the money raised went towards the Music department’s trip to Hawaii!

The boys raised $2000!!

In addition they also gave a table to the Rotary Club to be raffled for a good cause for the community.

Product Launch - Food for thought The Year 10 Food Technology students battled it out in the kitchen as well as in the marketplace, taking part in a Product Launch which tested their business acumen as much as their cooking skills.

The Product Launch was an opportunity for students to design, prepare, market and launch a nutritious snack food.

Students were expected to follow the ‘design process’ which involved research, design, development, costing, survey, packaging and production of their product.

This annual event was once again a huge success, with the guest judges stating “the standard of work continues to improve every year”.

These students thought this nonalcoholic drink was quite refreshing despite the initial reluctance to make a drink from fresh fruit and vegetables!

Sports Reports 2012 1st XV This year has been an amazing year and one of great success. We competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Girls Football Competition in the Counties Senior Championship Grade where we placed 2nd. This competition had both its fun and challenging moments that allowed us all to improve and grow both on and off the field. At the start of September we travelled down to Papamoa and competed in the NZSS Girls Football Tournament where we finished 10th – our highest ever placing. This tournament demanded nothing but the best from our girls, and in our eyes we delivered. Every single game we stepped out onto the field and strived to achieve our goal of winning. Nationals were an amazing and hilarious experience, and one that will never be forgotten. The girls must give a huge thanks to our amazing coach Katie “Ahh Bless” Spraggon and our manager Tracey “Mummy T” Tait for all they have done and put up with over the course of the year. Overall this season has been awesome – from winning to losing, beep tests to morning trainings, ballerinas to beaches, epic goals to half-time oranges, rugby kicks to cheerleading on the side line, headers to big kicks, pranks to cards, and friends to sisters. This year has

been a memorable experience and one that will be cherished forever.

I love you girls and am so proud of you all xox.

Membership BOOMED in 2012 for the Community Council – with students at all levels getting on board - a great sign.

This year students learned A LOT about getting involved and getting things done at a community level – and in THEIR community. We had students involved in the Manukau Beautification Trust, with Students Against Drink Driving, with the Manurewa and Manukau Youth Councils, with holiday ‘think tanks’, with Transport Auckland, with the World Vision 40 Hour Famine (over 200 students participating this year) and with ANZAC Day and Armistice Day. Students are also working on the finishing touches of a mural which will end up in a prominent secret location (at this stage). This mural will have a community road safety theme – one

2012 1st XV we had to win.

The mood in the changing room was “we can do this, it is our turn”.

The game once again was played with passion and aggression. We shut out Rosehill for the second consecutive game winning the game 31-3 that put us into the final against Wesley.

FINAL The day started with a 9am start for the boys with a nice relaxing breakfast and chat before the game faces came on. We travelled to Wesley College to where the finals for all CMRU games were being played. What a task for our boys playing Wesley on their home grounds. The game was played at pace and before long Manurewa was 3-0 down after conceding a penalty early in the game. Manurewa hit straight back with a penalty of their own to level the scores. Just before half time Wesley crossed our line to score a try to take a lead into the second half. The half time talk was hard and by no means were we out of this match. With 3 points behind it was still anyone’s game. With 35 mins remaining of the season, what did this game have still hiding in it.

Not long after half time Manurewa High school crossed Wesley’s line to score.

This was the first try Wesley had conceded all season and what a time for our big No.8 Alamanda to do it -in the final. The conversion was missed and the scores were locked at 13-13 with only 15 minutes remaining . The tension was high. The rugby was brilliant and there was still a twist of the final to come. With both teams playing their hearts out and starting to get tired, Wesley conceded a penalty right on half way.

Mark asked the ref if we had a time to kick the ball out and have a lineout, the answer -NO. Mark decided that he would have a shot at goal. What pressure he must have felt knowing if he gets it they win if he misses then the title would be Wesley’s.

Even though it finished a draw it would be awarded to Wesley as they scored the first try of the game.

Put yourself in Mark’s shoes. 50 metres out blowing cross wind and the title resting on this kick, what pressure. Mark lined the ball up and let it rip. It was a sweet strike and we all watched the ball go through the post and the touch refs flags go up. The final whistle blew and as one team went up in joy. The others sank to their knees in

tears, Manurewa had won the title for the second year in a row. What made it sweet was it was on Wesley’s grounds.

Final score 16-13.

CANBERRA 2012 26 September, 21 boys headed to Auckland airport bound for Australia for 3 games of rugby, Daramalan College, ACT Brumbies u17’s, St Edmunds. The first 15 were invited by St Edmunds to go and play on their land as they were that impressed with our hospitality when they came in April this year and wanted to return the favour.

After one night in Sydney at the Railway YHA we had the morning looking around The Rock and Opera House before we boarded the bus and had a 3 hour drive down to Canberra. The weather was warm, a nice 25 degrees. We arrived at our first School Daramalan (Dara), a Co-ed school with 800 students.

This is one of many private schools in Canberra and the facilities were outstanding. The boys met their billets and off they went ready for our game on Friday at midday. This school had an ok season finished fourth at the end of the season losing to St Edmunds in the semi-final. Game day arrived and we found out that the boys had gained a cult status within the school and everybody wanted to meet and hang around with them. The game started and Dara hit straight away with a try which they converted to lead 7-0. What started off well for Dara soon turned to despair as Rewa started to play the way that gave them the CMRFU title.

Before we knew it the game was over and the score was 52-7. What I failed to mention was the weather was wet, lightning, thunder and torrential down pour’s. The boys had left a long lasting impression on the school as well as the students.

Saturday was the game the boys and coaching staff really want. The team was given the opportunity to play the ACT Brumbies U17’s rep side before they went away to play in their tournament a few days later. What a great privilege for our boys to play an

PRE SEASON This year the 1st 15 was run by New Management with Hogan Chapman as coach ,Bruno Watkins as his Assistant coach and Nigel Lowe as Manager.

We had a lot of returning forwards from the championship winning side of 2011 which lead us into good stead for season 2012. We had two pre-season games against Whangarei Boys which we won 13-12 and against Papatoetoe High School which we won 19-17.

The Chiefs franchise introduced a preseason Knock out tournament this year for the first time called the Chiefs cup.

It was made up of the top 2 teams in Counties Manukau top 2 Teams in Bay of Plenty and 4 teams from the Waikato Manurewa’s first game was away against Cambridge High school , it was a game that had good running rugby and was played fiercely and fairly with Manurewa winning 35-22.

The next game was at home against our old enemy Wesley College. Once again Manurewa won 19-10. That put us in the final down at Waikato Stadium against Hamilton Boys. This game was the curtain raiser for Chiefs v Bulls super 15, Hamilton went on to win 32-3.

Although disappointed about the result we were still proud of making the final.

COUNTIES MANUKAU CHAMPIONSHIP As title holders we were determined not to lose it and to show that last year’s win was no fluke. It started off well with a win against Pukekohe High School 14-0. After that game things started to go wrong with 3 losses in a row going down to Wesley College 9-52, Rosehill college 15-21 and Pukekohe High School 12-13. This was leaving us mid table with some hard work to do for the rest of the season. Next game was for the Terry Burns cup against James Cook High which we comfortably won 44-0. We played Wesley again and went down 3-24.After that game the coaches sat down and did some working out from the points table to see just what we had to do for the rest of the season to make the final. It was a simple equation. We had win all remaining games .

Last of the round robin games was aginst Rosehill College at home and the boys put on a great display of hard rugby winning 45-17, with maximum points from the game. That put us in second place on the table to gain a home semi final against Rosehill College. Once again it was a game

Australian rep side, weather was sunny but very cold. It was snowing on the hills of Canberra and had a wind chill factor of -6 so the boys were playing in 2 degrees and hail. The game was brilliant. A lot of running rugby played in good spirit. It was a close game with 15 mins left and Manurewa scored 2 quick tries to give them a 30-20 win. Great for our boys beating a rep side but sad for the Brumbies as they know they have a lot of work to do in a week before their tournament. The Management of the Brumbies commented on how well our boys presented themselves on and off the field.

Sunday was rest day. This was an opportunity for us as a team to go to AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) and do a tour of their facilites. Everything was big and new, the latest technology - the best money can buy. After several hours looking around there we thought the boys needed some lunch and this also gave them some shopping time for souvenirs.

After that we took the boys up Mt Isa which gave them a look over the city and time to get some photos of our tour Party on top of Mt Isa looking down to parliament House in the distance.

This was the game against St Edmunds (Eddies). The 3rd game of rugby in 4 days which was a tough ask for the boys.

The weather was back to a good temp, 25 degrees ground firm and fast. Just right for running rugby. With the boys having already spent two nights with them, it was going to be mate against mate. The first half of rugby showed it was mate v mate as the score was very close 7-5. Our boys were starting to show fatigue after already playing 2 games in 2 days but with some great leadership from their Captain Richard they started to play running rugby and just blew the Eddies out the park by scoring 3 tries in 12 mins to win the game 30-12, what a way to finish the season.

Outward Bound

at a jetty and commenced our climb up Mt Stoke. We were proud of ourselves because we reached the peak in one day; from sea level to the summit was 1203 metres. I was ecstatic to achieve my goal and be above the clouds.

We thought it would be easier to head back down the mountain. However, we were proven wrong. People were tired, frustrated and homesick. Yet as a group we persevered and finally reached the Queen Charlotte track at 5:00pm. We had a choice; pull an all-nighter or camp for the night.

When it came down to it we decided we wanted to leave a legacy and walk the 31 kilometre track back to base camp. This was one of the most difficult walks I ever had to do. But McKenzie watch 568 completed it walking through the darkness of the night to get back to camp just after the break-adawn. We were now “LEGENDS”.

After our epic journey we did high ropes and the following day we ran a half marathon.

22 kilometres in just over two hours. I was proud of my accomplishment.

To finish our camp, at McKenzie watch 568 we planted our own tree, I said goodbye to my best stick ‘Donatello’, and we said goodbye to our Trainers “Chi” and “Jess”, the best Trainers in the world.

We left the beautiful Anakiwa, not as individuals, but as McKenzie Watch 568: A Whanau. I will miss my new life-long friends Georgia, Kyle, Toby, Joshua, Shefali, Millie, Tommy, Caleb, Sophie, David, Zach, Bella and Frances. But I know I will see them in the future.

Strong. Confident. A leader. That is now how people describe me. Have I actually changed? Maybe. But if I have I owe it to Outward Bound. If anyone ever gets the opportunity to do Outward Bound, do it. It will change your life.

And as Kurt Hahn, the founder of Outward Bound said: Plus est en vous (there is more in you than you think).

Quiet. Shy. Timid. These were the common words used to describe me by anyone who had met me. What can I say? That was my natural personality.

But that has all changed.

On April 22nd 2012, I embarked on a life changing adventure to the South Island. On this day I met 13 new people who were here for an adventure, who became my family. I was to spend the next 21 days with these strangers, navigating through the bush, sailing on the rough seas and trusting them with my life in their hands.

At first I was scared because I didn’t know what to expect. But soon enough that emotion transformed into hate.

I hated the first few days of this so called “Life-Changing” adventure. I had blisters on my feet that lasted two months. I was shivering cold and we were lost in the bush during the middle of a rain storm. At this point I was pushed to my limit. I wanted to go home. But the next day, after waking up at 6:00am and tramping for 9 hours we finally made it back to our bus. We were so relieved to finally get off our feet.

In a span of 3 days it felt like we had already experienced all of the emotions possible. Little did we know this was only the training for our big adventure.

The next week was much, much easier.

Being the positivity ‘keeper-upper’ on the sailing ship was the easiest job I ever had. Following the sailing we did rock climbing… the Outward Bound way. I became an expert in a kayak… that is an expert at tipping over and falling in the water. That didn’t worry me though because I was now enjoying my experiences.

Halfway through the trip meant it was time to go on our solos. As a group we travelled up the mountain, but one by one by one we were dropped off in the dark. We had to set up our camp in the dark and enjoy our time alone for 2 nights and 1 day. This time was our time to reflect, rest and recuperate, which we soon found out was essential for the journey that lay ahead.

Our next adventure: two days at sea, four days on land. We started our six day journey by sailing out of the Charlotte Sounds camping for the night on the beach and then sailing to a true piece of New Zealand history, Cook’s Cove. From Cook’s Cove we sailed to Mint Bay. Under the stars we anchored and slept on our boat, preparing for the next four days.

HALP 2012 Foundation. Looking out over Hai Van at the Peak of Marble Mountain, we saw the beauty of the coasts.

Those 400 steps to the top were definitely worth it. At China Beach we fought off waves, and drowned in the beauty of the surf, sun and sand. Down the Perfume River, we tasted coconut candy, rode by horse and cart in the rain, and exotic fruits were eaten after paddling our way down the river for lunch. We were mesmerised by temples, pagodas and the citadel and the intricate detail that decorated them.

We were lost in translation when the speaker blared on the overnight trains but as far as it concerned us we continued skipping through each other’s cabins along with the cockroaches. We were taught selfdefence and were out done in a press up competition by the shirtless gods at the martial arts school. Our hearts pounded with the drums at the sight of flying spears and fists. We dined on feasts fit for emperors and empresses, dressed in traditional silk costumes. We cruised through the majestical waters of Halong Bay and discovered that there were more than 1000 islands still left unnamed.

Kayaking under the setting sun, discovering coves, diving from the balcony of the boat, and chilling on the top deck under the night sky, we realised we had become a family.

We had even deemed Manu, the kiwi that travelled with us, a part of it.

The final day arrived and the last thing left on our agenda was to visit the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, the most worshiped man in Vietnam.

Emotions ran high on the final bus ride with speeches, songs, laughter and tears. Our voices wailed through the airport as we sang Piki Atu for the final time as a family with tears streaming down our cheeks. And as we boarded the plane back to New Zealand with our well-travelled kiwi buddy, we knew that our adventure had just begun. Cambodia and Vietnam: countries rich, not with wealth but with history. We left our blood, sweat and tears, and brought back lessons, memories and scars on our hearts. We found a new place to call home and we’ll be back soon.

That red eye flight was the beginning of the rest of our lives…

Looking out the windows of our pink bus in Phnom Penh, we quickly realised that this was not like the home we knew. The streets were crowded with motorbikes, tuktuks, and people under the scorching sun. The killing fields and genocide museum offered an insight to Cambodia’s turbulent past. The green grasses still held untold stories while the walls of the museum were stained with the blood and screams of innocent people.

We rode six hours up the Tonle Sap River and found ourselves in Siem Reap. We were inspired and uplifted by children at the Children’s Centre for Happiness, World Vision and Nozomi School. Dancing in the courtyard, reading and drawing and singing made everyone smile and cry. We heard stories from children of all ages and realised truly, how fortunate we are. We dined at ‘Friends’ and ‘Streets’, amazing restaurants dedicated to training street kids to prepare them for the hospitality industry.

As we rode elephants to the temples of Angkor Wat, we aspired to be like Lara Croft. The temples were beautiful, and bared the marks of an incredible history.

The unforgettable exotic smells wafted through Pub Street and at the end of the street were the night markets. “Pretty ladee want tuktuk? T-shirt, ten dolla!

You want? You want?”- the impossibility of walking straight down a road without being bombarded with questions and strange things waved in your face.

Vietnam welcomed us with open arms and our tour guide Mr. Phoung introduced us into his world, filled with fun, pho noodles, friendly faces and frustrations. We were put into the shoes of past soldiers when we crawled through the narrow Cu Chi tunnels and stood behind the firing line. M16s, M60s and AK-47s lined the fence and for most of us, we experienced a power we’d never imagined – the power of being able to pull that trigger.

We wander through the halls of the Reunification Palace and war museums in the afternoon light.

In Hoi An, the lanterns flickered through the streets on the night of the Full Moon Festival. Dragon dancers, tourists and families gathered down by the riverside to be immersed in Vietnamese culture.

KKM and Maori Achievement This has been another successful year for our hard working Kahui Kaiako Māori (KKM), our Māori advisory group, in the quest of raising the profile of Māori within our school and in helping with raising Māori student achievement.

Earlier in the year our group split into 5 Project teams and each group had a different task they had to work on.

1)Project Identify – were in charge of identifying all our Māori students in the school and their iwi so we could better communicate with them and track their academic progress.

2)Project E Whānau – are in the process of launching a whānau newsletter via email to report on and celebrate what is happening within our school in terms of things Māori – student achievements, events, student profiles etc.

3)Project Student KKM – have set up a Māori Student Council (MSC) who have been working alongside KKM to do great things within the school. Our MSC have helped with activities during Te Reo Māori week running Ki-o-rahi at lunchtime, helped with a whole staff professional development session on waiata-a-ringa and Te Reo, teaching our school song ‘Piki Atu’ in assemblies and have set up groups on Facebook for all Māori students at Manurewa High School to share and celebrate Māori success.

4)Project Best Practice – have set up a database for teachers to access on our computer system on what best works for Māori. There are Ministry documents, Professional Readings, Activities, Information on Tikanga and useful websites on there that teachers can use to enhance their teaching and relationship building with our Māori students and support teachers in meeting requirements for their appraisals.

5)Project Waiata – are in charge of running our Friday waiata sessions in briefing, teaching new waiata to staff so we have a collection of songs and they have even been busy organising and teaching all our students Piki Atu in assemblies for Te Reo Māori Week.

The song Piki Atu has even now been converted into a school Haka which the First XV Rugby team took with them on their Australian tour. We hope to start teaching this new school haka to the whole school next year in 2013.

Earlier in the year, KKM had been recognised as a group that showed best practice in terms of raising Māori achievement and were visited by Graham Blackley, the winner of the Australians Minister’s Award for Excellence in Teaching or Leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education. He had visited Canada and New Zealand in the hope of researching strategies around what best works for indigenous peoples in education.

Graham was beyond impressed with KKM’s presentations of their work on their projects and even shared his harsh but joyful experiences of indigenous education in Australia. KKM were pleased to be part of such a prestigious and important research project to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education in Australia.

The Senior Māori Achievement Dinner was another milestone this year as it was the first time we had put on such an event as a school. The night was a follow on event from last year’s Māori Celebration and hoped to inspire and encourage our senior students to stay at school and continue achieving in their studies and extra-curricular activities.

Again we showcased our very talented Māori students with several student performances and were treated to listening to the journey of our guest speaker, Jason Fox, in getting to his successes of being a qualified lawyer and CEO of Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara.

KKM also hosted our Māori Celebration for a second year running recently and it was dominated by senior students which was great. It was lovely to see so many of our Year 13 students cross the stage to receive their pounamu in recognition of their completion of Secondary Education.

We as a school were able to further our connections with the Manurewa Marae and have the amazing Te Tai Tonga be a
