Avanti!

Esa-Pekka Salosen, Olli Pohjolan ja Jukka-Pekka Sarasteen aloitteesta vuonna 1983 syntynyt Avanti! perustettiin ravistelemaan totuttuja käytäntöjä. Syyt olivat syvästi musiikillisia: ”Kamariorkesteri Avantin perustamiseen vaikutti pääasiassa kaksi seikkaa: toisaalta tarve mahdollisimman korkealaatuiseen yhteismusisointiin innostuneiden ja taitavien muusikoiden kesken, toisaalta tietoisuus siitä, että Suomessa tarvitaan kokoonpanoltaan joustavaa ennakkoluulotonta yhtyettä esittämään sitä ohjelmistoa, joka muutoin jää soittamatta. On olemassa runsaasti suurenmoista musiikkia, jonka esityskokoonpano ei vastaa standardisoituja yhtyetyyppejä. Siksi Avanti! muuttaa muotoaan konsertista toiseen. Lähtökohta on teos, itse musiikki, ei instituutio. Avanti! ei ole erikoistunut mihinkään tyyliin tai aikakauteen, vaan pyrkii ohjelmistollaan kattamaan musiikkia mahdollisimman laajalta aikaväliltä tuntien vastuuta myös oman aikamme musiikin tunnetuksi tekemisestä.”

Avanti! on vastannut hyvin asettamaansa haasteeseen. Avanti! on kasvattanut muusikoita, säveltäjiä ja konsertinjärjestäjiä vastaamaan muuttuvan ajan tarpeisiin,

myös monet keskeiset uudet pyrkimykset ja virtaukset ovat kanavoituneet Suomeen Avantin kautta. Orkesterin merkitystä suomalaiselle nykymusiikille ei voi vähätellä: 1900-luvun lopun vuosirenkaisiin jää joukoittain Avantin näköistä, innostunutta, virtuoosista ja ennakkoluulotonta musiikkia.

Avantista on epäilemättä kehittynyt instituutio, mutta edelleen se toimii alkuperäistä ideologiaansa noudattaen. Taiteellisen johtajansa, klarinettitaiteilija Kari Kriikun johdolla orkesteri tuottaa rutiinista poikkeavia ohjelmakokonaisuuksia konserttisarjassaan pääkaupungissa.

Porvoon Suvisoitto, Avantin vuosittainen kesäfestivaali, on eräänlainen poikkileikkaus Avantin toimenkuvasta. Vuodesta 1986 asti järjestetyn festivaalin monipuolinen tarjonta koostuu yli kymmenestä varsinaisesta konsertista Porvoossa ja sen lähiympäristössä sekä oheistapahtumista kaduilla ja toreilla yhteistyössä paikallisten verkostojen kanssa. Suvisoiton ohjelmasta vastaa vuosittain vaihtuva taiteellinen suunnittelija tai teemasäveltäjä. Vuosien varrella tässä roolissa on nähty mm. Hans-Werner Henze, Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho, Nico Muhly ja Lotta Wennäkoski.

Avanti! on ahkerimpia suomalaisen musiikin lähettiläitä ulkomailla. Vuosittaisilla vierailuillaan maamme rajojen ulkopuolelle Avantilla on pääsääntöisesti viemisinään täysin kotimaista ohjelmaa monipuolisina kokonaisuuksina, taidemusiikista tangoon.

Avanti! tarjoaa musiikkia avarakatseisille ja vie kuulijansa rohkeisiin valintoihin: aiemmin tuttu vaikuttaa tuoreelta ja uudelta, uusi pian tutulta. Avanti! liikkuu vapaasti eri aikakausissa ja tyylilajeissa, erilaisina kokoonpanoina ja tinkimättömästi laatua vaalien.

In 1983 conductors Esa-Pekka Salonen and Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and flautist Olli Pohjola came up with an idea of an ensemble that varies in size from a string quartet to a symphony orchestra, specializes in no particular genre, is flexible and open to all ideas. The outcome was Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, proud to be a specialist in all styles with a strong sense of responsibility for contemporary music.

Avanti! has had a tremendous influence on music in Finland. As the Finnish national daily Helsingin Sanomat once said, “Avanti! is like King Midas: anything it touches immediately turns to gold.” The orchestra’s first record was awarded the Gramophone. Prize of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE). The next one prompted Fanfare to write: “Among such new groups here and abroad as Orpheus and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Avanti! has made a bid to be recognized as primus inter pares.”

Avanti!’s own festival, Suvisoitto – Summer Sounds, was established in 1986, in the second oldest Finnish town of Porvoo, 50 kms from Helsinki. For twenty years the Summersounds has given performances, loyally to the orchestra’s original idea, from both contemporary and standard repertoire, in a cavalcade nothing short of astounding.

Avanti! tours regularily all over the world and is an internationally well known ambassador of Finnish music. Many works by prominent Finnish composers, such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Magnus Lindberg and Kaija Saariaho. have got their first performances by Avanti!

The Artistic Director of Avanti! since November 1998 has been the Finnish clarinettist Kari Kriikku.

LAURI AHOKAS

Lauri Ahokas

Lauri Ahokas on opiskellut orkesterinjohtoa Sibelius-Akatemian kapellimestariluokalla prof. Atso Almilan ja prof. Hannu Linnun ohjauksessa. Hän suoritti orkesterinjohdon diplomikonserttinsa erinomaisin arvosanoin Kuopion kaupunginorkesterin edessä ja valmistui orkesterinjohdon maisteriksi 2018. Ahokas on myös opiskellut prof. Jorma Panulan nuorisokapellimestariluokalla.

Ahokas on esiintynyt kapellimestarina kamariorkesteri Avanti!n ja Pori Sinfoniettan konserteissa, Sibafest-festivaalilla NYKY Ensemblen nuorten säveltäjien konsertissa sekä tehnyt oopperadebyyttinsä Sibelius-Akatemian Figaron häät -produktiossa.

Ahokas on opiskellut pianonsoittoa Sibelius-Akatemian nuorisokoulutuksessa opettajinaan Meri Louhos ja Hui-Ying Liu-Tawaststjerna, sekä Sibelius- Akatemian esittävän säveltaiteen koulutusohjelmassa prof. Erik T. Tawaststjernan johdolla. Hän suoritti pianonsoiton A-tutkinnon 2011 erinomaisin arvosanoin ja valmistui musiikin maisteriksi 2013.

Ahokas on esiintynyt pianistina mm. Naantalin musiikkijuhlilla, Aino Ackté -kamarifestivaalilla, sekä Radion Sinfoniaorkesterin solistina Eurovision nuorten solistien kilpailun kotimaan finaalissa. Ahokas on palkittu kahdesti Sibelius-Akatemian Helmi Vesa -pianokilpailussa, jossa hän sai myös erikoispalkinnon György Ligetin ”Automne à Varsovie” -pianoetydin esityksestä.

Lauri Ahokas on musiikin ohella valmistunut 2011 Helsingin yliopistosta lääketieteen lisensiaatiksi ja työskentelee silmätauteihin erikoistuvana lääkärinä. Hän myös rakastaa kissoja.

Lauri Ahokas studied conducting with professor Jorma Panula and at the prestigious Sibelius Academy conducting class with professors Atso Almila and Hannu Lintu. He performed his diploma concert with Kuopio Symphony Orchestra receiving excellent grades and graduated as Master of Conducting in 2018.

As a conductor, Ahokas has performed e.g. with Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, Pori Sinfonietta, and NYKY Ensemble. He debuted as an opera conductor at the Sibelius Academy production of La nozze di Figaro.

Ahokas studied piano performance at the Sibelius Academy with Meri Louhos, Hui-Ying Liu-Tawaststjerna and professor Erik T. Tawaststjerna. He gave his diploma concert in 2011 receiving excellent grades and graduated as Master of Piano Performance in 2013.

As a pianist, Ahokas has performed e.g. at the Naantali Music Festival, Aino Ackté Chamber Festival, and as a soloist of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra at the national finals of Eurovision Young Soloists’ Competition. He has received prizes at the Sibelius Academy Helmi Vesa piano competition, including a special prize for an outstanding performance of the piano etude “Automne à Varsovie” by György Ligeti.

In addition to music, Lauri Ahokas graduated 2011 as M.D. at the University of Helsinki and is currently a resident of ophthalmology. He also has a profound love for cats.

IAN BOSTRIDGE

Ian Bostridge

Lontoossa vuonna 1964 syntynyt Ian Bostridge on yksi tämän hetken tunnetuimpia englantilaisia tenoreita. Hän on

tullut erityisesti tunnetuksi niin yksinlaulu-tulkinnoistaan, kuin Benjamin Brittenin musiikin esityksistään. Ennen laulajanuransa alkua Bostridge ehti valmistua historian ja filosofian tohtoriksi St. John’s Collegesta Oxfordista. Finaalipaikat laulukilpailuissa ja National Federation of Music Societies / Esso Awardin voitto saivat hänet kuitenkin valitsemaan ammattilaulajan uran. The Young Concert Artists Trustin antaman apurahan turvin Bostridge pystyi keskittymään uuteen ammattiinsa, ja hän debytoi Wigmore Hallissa Lontoossa vuonna 1993.

Bostridgen alkuvaiheen uran yhdeksi merkittävimmistä resitaaleista osoittautui ylistystä saanut esitys Schubertin Winterreise-teoksesta Purcell Roomissa vuonna 1994. Samana vuonna hän esiintyi ensimmäistä kertaa Benjamin Brittenin perustamalla Aldeburghin festivaalilla. Tästä lähtien Bostridgen ohjelmistoon on kuulunut erottamattomasti Brittenin musiikki. Kapellimestari Antonia Pappanon kanssa yhteistyönä tehty levyllinen Shakespearen lauluja sai Grammy-palkinnon vuonna 2017. Bostridge on uransa aikana saanut 15 Grammy-ehdokkuutta, kilpailuvoittoja, sekä Commander of the British Empire -arvonimen.

Laulajanuran valitseminen ei kuitenkaan tarkoittanut loppua Bostridgen akateemiselle uralle, vaan nämä kaksi eri osa-aluetta ovat tukeneet toisiaan. Hän on julkaissut kaksi musiikkiaiheista teosta: A Singer’s Notebook (2011), sekä ylistetyn Schubert’s Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession (2015). Bostridge avioitui kirjailija-kustantaja Lucasta Millerin kanssa vuonna 1992, ja parilla on kaksi lasta.

Born December 25, 1964, in London, Ian Bostridge is perhaps the best-known English tenor to emerge since the death of Peter Pears. He has become closely associated with the art song repertory, as well as with the music of Benjamin Britten.

Before becoming a singer, Bostridge obtained his PhD in history and philosophy from St. John’s College of Oxford. However, reaching the finals of both the Kathleen Ferrier and Richard Tauber competitions and winning the 1991 National Federation of Music Societies/Esso Award proved decisive in moving him toward a career in singing. The Young Concert Artists Trust gave him a financial grant to develop his career, and he debuted at Wigmore Hall in London in 1993.

One of his most important early recitals was in 1994 at the Purcell Room, where he gave a highly acclaimed performance of Schubert’s Winterreise. In the same year, he made his first appearance at the Aldeburgh Festival. Since then he has become strongly associated with the music of the festival’s founder, Benjamin Britten. He made his first New York appearances in 1998 at the Frick Collection and in 1999 at Alice Tully Hall. In 1998 he debuted at the Munich Festival as Nerone in L’incoronazione di Poppea. His debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was in 1999.

His operatic debut was in 1994 at the Covent Garden Festival’s production of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as Lysander. In 1995, he sang his first solo recital at Wigmore Hall and increased his European recital presence with appearances in Lyon and Cologne. His debut with the English National Opera was as Tamino in Mozart’s The Magic Flute in 1996, and he was acclaimed for his seductive portrayal of the ghost Quint in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 2010, he sang in the premier of Henze’s Opfergang, a setting for voices and orchestra of a poem by Franz Werfel.

Many of his recordings have won or been nominated for major awards. His operatic recordings include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, and Thomas Adès’ The Tempest.

He is in much demand as a recital singer and in that capacity has sung on several volumes of Hyperion’s epochal complete Schubert song collection (including the recording of Die schöne Müllerin). He has also issued recordings of Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe, songs of Reynaldo Hahn, a program of little-known Britten songs, and one volume of Jecklin-Disc’s set of the complete songs of Othmar Schoeck.

Switching to singing did not put an end to Bostridge’s academic writing, and those two aspects of his career have reinforced each other. His 1997 book Witchcraft and Its Transformations did not touch directly on music but achieved a wide general readership. Bostridge has written two books on music, A Singer’s Notebook (2011) and the much-praised (and much-translated) Schubert’s Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession (2015).

The year 2016 saw two significant Bostridge album releases. One, Songs of Our Ancestors, was a duo with Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang and featured both Western and Chinese repertory (and led to an Asian tour by the pair). Bostridge’s album of orchestral Shakespeare songs with conductor Antonio Pappano was honored with a Grammy award for solo vocals in 2017. Bostridge has earned at least 15 Grammy nominations as well as a variety of other top classical prizes as well as designation as Commander of the British Empire. Bostridge married writer, editor, and publisher Lucasta Miller in 1992, and the couple has raised a son and a daughter.

SASKIA GIORGINI

Saskia Giorgini

Kansainvälisen Mozart-kilpailun voittaja (Salzburg, 2016) Saskia Giorgini on yksi tämän hetken kiinnostavimmista nuoren sukupolven pianisteista. Häntä on ylistetty “virheettömästä tekniikasta, kauniista ja koskettavasta äänensävystään, fantasiamaisesta fraseerauksestaan sekä puhtaasta musikaalisuudestaan.” (Salvatore Accardo) Saskia Giorgini on soittanut kehuttuja resitaaleja ja suoria radiolähetyksiä useissa merkittävissä konserttitaloissa ja tunnetuilla festivaaleilla ympäri maailmaa. Näistä mainittakoon mm. Lingotto-Hall (Torino), Teatro La Fenice (Venetsia), Concerti del Quirinale (Rooma), Tivoli Vredenburg (Utrecht), Eindhoven Muziekgebouw, Kamermuziek Festival (Utrect), Großer Saal Stiftung Mozarteum (Salzburg), MiTo Sttembre Musica Festival, Unione Musicale, Holland International Music Sessions, Vancouver Summer Festival, Filharmonia Narodowa (Varsova), International Piano Stars Festival (Liettua), International Piano Festival (Wuhan, Kiina), sekä Lockenhaus Festival Summer Academy (taiteellinen johtaja Gidon Kremer).

Giorginin New Yorkin debyytti tapahtui vuonna 2013 NYCA orkesterin kanssa. Ohjelmassa oli tällöin Rahmaninovin pianokonsertto nro 1. Giorgini on soittanut monien arvostettujen orkestereiden kanssa. Näistä mainittakoon esimerkiksi Lodzin filharmoninen orkesteri (Puola), Kanadan radion orkesteri CBC, Vorarlbergin sinfoniaorkesteri, Liepajan sinfoniaorkesteri (Latvia), Wuhanin filharmoninen orkesteri, Archi De Sono -orkesteri ja Giovanile Italiana-orkesteri. Kapellimestareista mainittakoon Mario Bernardi, Gérard Korsten, Tadeusz Wojciechowski, Antonello Manacorda, Andrea Battistoni, sekä Massimiliano Caldi.

Giorgini ylsi finalistiksi kansainvälisessä Ferruccio Busoni -pianokilpailussa vuonna 2015, jossa hän sai palkinnon parhaasta Chopin-tulkinnasta. Vuonna 2012 Aachenissa käydyssä Prix d‘AmadèO-kilpailussa hän voitti toisen palkinnon, sekä Mozart- että yleisöpalkinnon. Erityinen viehtymys kamarimusiikkiin on poikinut yhteistyötä muun muassa seuraavien maineikkaiden muusikoiden kanssa: Ian Bostridge, Janine Jansen, Gilles Apap, Mario Brunello, Thomas Demenga, Friedemann Eichhorn, Dora Schwarzberg.

Saskia Giorgini aloitti piano-opintonsa neljävuotiaana. 15-ikäisenä hänet hyväksyttiin opiskelemaan “Incontri col Maestro”-akatemiaan Imolaan, jossa hän opiskeli opettajinaan Franco Scala, Riccardo Risaliti, Leonid Margarius and Michel Dalberto. Samaan aikaan hän valmistui erinomaisin arvosanoin myös Torinon Konservatoriosta opettajanaan Claudio Voghera. Tämän jälkeen hän jatkoi vielä opintojaan Accademia di Musica di Pinerolossa Enrico Pacen johdolla, sekä Mozarteum Salzburgissa opettajanaan Pavel Gililov.

Winner of the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg in 2016, where she also got the special prize for the best interpretation of the commissioned work, Saskia Giorgini is considered one of the most interesting pianists of the young generation. She is praised for her “unerring technique, a beautiful and moving sound, a phrasing full of fantasy and a pure musicality” (Salvatore Accardo).

Saskia Giorgini has appeared in acclaimed recitals and live radio recordings in important halls and Festivals, amongst which Lingotto–Hall in Turin, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Concerti del Quirinale in Rome, Tivoli Vredenburg in Utrecht, Eindhoven Muziekgebouw, Utrecht Kamermuziek Festival, Großer Saal Stiftung Mozarteum in Salzburg, MiTo Settembre Musica Festival, Unione Musicale, Holland International Music Sessions, Vancouver Summer Festival, Warsaw’s Filharmonia Narodowa, International Piano Stars Festival in Lettland, International Piano Festival in Wuhan in China… She participated in the renowned Lockenhaus Festival Summer Academy, under the artistic direction of Gidon Kremer.

For her 2013 New York début in 2013 she performed Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto n.1 with the NYCA Orchestra. She has played together with important orchestras, such as Lodz Philarmonic Orchestra in Poland, CBC Radio Orchestra in Canada, Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra in Latvia, Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra, L’Orchestra Archi De Sono, l’Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, under the baton of conductors as Mario Bernardi, Gérard Korsten, Tadeusz Wojciechowski, Antonello Manacorda, Andrea Battistoni, Massimiliano Caldi.

Saskia was a finalist in the International Piano Competition Ferruccio Busoni 2015 where she received the award for the best interpretation of a work by Frédéric Chopin. In the Prix d‘AmadèO in Aachen 2012 she won the second prize as well as the Mozart Prize and the Audience Award. A special affinity for chamber music brings her regularly together with renowned partners: Ian Bostridge, Janine Jansen, Gilles Apap, Mario Brunello, Thomas Demenga, Friedemann Eichhorn, Dora Schwarzberg and many others.

Saskia Giorgini received her first piano lessons at the age of four. At fifteen she was admitted to the piano academy “Incontri col Maestro” in Imola, where she studied with Franco Scala, Riccardo Risaliti, Leonid Margarius and Michel Dalberto. At the same time she graduated from the Conservatorio di Torino with Claudio Voghera, with the highest grades and honours.

She then completed her studies at the Accademia di Musica di Pinerolo with Enrico Pace and at the Mozarteum Salzburg with Pavel Gililov (Postgraduate).

ANDREAS HAEFLIGER

Andreas Haefliger

Andreas Haefliger (s. 1962) on tullut tunnetuksi muusikkona, jonka koko olemus kielii syvällisestä kehon ja mielen yhteydestä. Lapsuudenperheessä musiikki oli aina läsnä ja konsertissa käyminen kuului tavanomaisiin ajanvietteisiin. Legendaarisen sveitsiläistenorin Ernst Haefligerin poikana hän istui joka pääsiäinen kuuntelemassa Bachin Matteus-passiota neljävuotiaasta lähtien. Andreas on verrannut kasvuympäristöään suutarin verstaaseen, jossa materiaalien kaikki ominaisuudet ovat juurtuneet tietoisuuteen ja sitä kautta myös omiin konsertteihin.

New Yorkin Juilliardissa opiskellut Haefliger on tehnyt näyttävän uran niin konsertto- kuin resitaalipianistina. Hän on 90-luvun alusta lähtien esiintynyt kaikissa Amerikan ja Euroopan suurissa orkestereissa useaan kertaan. Hän soittaa Dieter Ammannin pianokonserton Helsingin lisäksi Lontoossa, Bostonissa, Wienissä, Münchenissä ja Taipeissa sekä levyttää konserton Helsingin kaupunginorkesterin kanssa.

Haefliger on vuosien ajan harjoittanut kung fulla tietoista kehonhallintaa, oikeaoppista hengitystekniikkaa ja räjähtävyyttä. Heittäytymällä liikkeisiin täysillä hän räjäyttää lukkoja ja jännityksiä myös mielessään. ”Soittaessa jokainen ajatus tulee salamannopeasti, ja kehon on pystyttävä reagoimaan niihin samalla nopeudella. Kung fu -elokuvissa näyttelijät lentävät ilmassa, mutta sitä kung fu ei opeta. Se opettaa mielikuvituksesi lentämään, ja silloin mikään ei ole mahdotonta”, Haefliger on sanonut BBC:lle.

Coming from a rich tradition, pianist Andreas Haefliger “belongs to that elite group of interpreters…one of the most serious, questing pianists on the circuit today… breathtaking virtuosity…a complete Beethovenian”. Born into a distinguished Swiss musical family, Haefliger studied at Juilliard and soon thereafter appeared with New York Philharmonic, Cleveland, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Pittsburgh, Chicago and San Francisco Symphony. In his native Europe too, Haefliger has appeared with the great orchestras and festivals – such as the Royal Concertgebouw, Munich Philharmonic, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris and London Symphony. He made his New York recital debut in 1988, and since then plays regularly at the major halls in North America, Asia and Europe. Chamber music has also always been central to his music-making. He has won many plaudits for his Beethoven Perspectives recital programmes in concert at major halls and festivals worldwide, and also on CD - discs 1-6 with Avie, disc 7 onwards with BIS as part of their new exclusive recording relationship. This follows releases with Sony and Decca at the start of his career, and more recently on Harmonia Mundi.

Tär­keä vai­kut­ta­ja oli myös Györ­gy Sebök. 1985-86 Hak­ki­la oli Ful­bright-sti­pen­di­aat­ti­na Co­lum­bia Uni­ver­si­tys­sä New Yor­kis­sa. Hän on opet­ta­nut Si­be­lius-Aka­te­mias­sa vuo­des­ta 1987 ja hä­net ni­mi­tet­tiin pia­no­musii­kin pro­fes­so­rik­si 2014. Hän on toi­mi­nut tai­teel­li­se­na joh­ta­ja­na mm. Musiik­kia lin­nas­sa -fes­ti­vaa­lil­la, Si­be­lius-Aka­te­mian kon­sert­ti­toi­mis­tos­sa ja Nur­mek­sen Ke­sä­aka­te­mias­sa. Hak­ki­la on teh­nyt pal­jon yh­teis­työ­tä sä­vel­tä­jien kans­sa, kan­tae­sit­tä­nyt kym­me­niä teok­sia ja teh­nyt suo­ma­lais­ta musiik­kia tun­ne­tuk­si maa­il­mal­la. Hän on esiin­ty­nyt so­lis­ti­na ja ka­ma­ri­muusik­ko­na tär­keim­mil­lä ko­ti­mai­sil­la fes­ti­vaa­leil­la, Kes­ki-Eu­roo­pas­sa, Yh­dys­val­lois­sa, Ete­lä-Ame­ri­kas­sa ja Ja­pa­nis­sa. Hän on saa­nut kan­sain­vä­lis­tä huo­mio­ta Mozar­tin so­naat­tien ko­ko­nais­le­vy­tyk­ses­tä, Si­be­liuk­sen pia­no­musiik­kial­bu­mis­ta. Hä­nen dis­ko­gra­fi­aan­sa kuu­luu pa­ri­kym­men­tä le­vyä. Hän on teh­nyt tii­vis­tä yh­teis­työ­tä mm. Ka­ri­ta Mat­ti­lan, Mi­kael He­las­vuon, An­ner Bijls­man, Sirk­ka-Lii­sa Kaa­ki­sen, Ans­si Kart­tusen, Lil­li Paa­si­ki­ven ja Pet­te­ri Sa­lo­maan kans­sa. Tui­ja Hak­ki­la stu­died at the Si­be­lius Aca­de­my with Lii­sa Poh­jo­la and Eero Hei­no­nen, and con­ti­nued her stu­dies at the Pa­ris Con­ser­va­toi­re with Jacques Rou­vier and Théo­dor Pa­raschi­vesco. She stu­died 20th cen­tu­ry music with Clau­de Helf­fer in Pa­ris and clas­sical per­for­mance prac­tices with Malcolm Bil­son in the Uni­ted Sta­tes. Ot­her influen­tial teac­hers have inclu­ded Györ­gy Sebök and Wil­liam Pleeth. Hak­ki­la was a Ful­bright Scho­lar at Co­lum­bia Uni­ver­si­ty in New York in 1985/​86. Since 1987 she has held a se­nior teac­hing po­si­tion in pia­no music at the Si­be­lius Aca­de­my; she ear­ned a Doc­tor of Music degree in 2005. In 2014 she was ap­poin­ted Pro­fes­sor of Pia­no at the same ins­ti­tu­tion. She has been the Ar­tis­tic Di­rec­tor of the Ear­ly Music Fes­ti­val in Hä­meen­lin­na, the Si­be­lius Aca­de­my Concert Se­ries and the Nur­mes Music Sum­mer Aca­de­my and Fes­ti­val. Hak­ki­la has per­for­med as so­loist, in cham­ber groups and as accom­pa­nist th­roug­hout Eu­ro­pe, in the Uni­ted Sta­tes, Ja­pan, In­do­ne­sia, Africa and South Ame­rica, and has made broadcasts in se­ve­ral count­ries. She has col­la­bo­ra­ted with emi­nent musicians inclu­ding Vera Beths, An­ner Bijls­ma, Mi­kael He­las­vuo, Sirk­ka-Lii­sa Kaa­ki­nen-Pilch, Ans­si Kart­tu­nen, Alexei Lu­bi­mov, Ka­ri­ta Mat­ti­la and per­for­med with con­duc­tors Okko Kamu, Juk­ka-Pek­ka Sa­ras­te, Leif Se­gers­tam and Sa­ka­ri Ora­mo among ot­hers. Her re­per­toi­re ran­ges from Bach to con­tem­po­ra­ry music. A com­mit­ment to pe­riod in­stru­ment per­for­mance has led her to pre­sent ba­roque, clas­sical and ro­man­tic pro­gram­mes on pe­riod pia­nos ran­ging from ear­ly Sil­ber­mann for­te­pia­nos to late ro­man­tic pia­nos, whi­le her col­la­bo­ra­tions with to­day’s com­po­sers re­sul­ted in nu­me­rous world pre­mie­res. Tui­ja Hak­ki­la’s solo disco­grap­hy inclu­des a high­ly-acclai­med comple­te cycle of Mozart key­board so­na­tas on a for­te­pia­no, a com­pi­la­tion of Jean Si­be­lius’ pia­no music, a reci­tal of 20th cen­tu­ry pia­no music and a world pre­mie­re recor­ding of the ear­ly 19th cen­tu­ry Fin­nish Lit­han­der brot­hers’ music. A CD with Dus­sek for­te­pia­no so­na­tas came out last year in the in­ter­na­tio­nal comple­te recor­ding with Bril­liant Clas­sics la­bel. In the re­per­toi­re for cel­lo and pia­no her disco­grap­hy inclu­des reci­tals of 20th cen­tu­ry music, Ga­briel Fauré’s music and all Beet­ho­ven’s works. In the field of cham­ber music she has recor­ded an al­bum with Kai­ja Saa­ria­ho’s music for trio en­sembles, Niccoló Cas­tiglio­ni’s cham­ber music, Haydn flu­te trios, Brahms and By­ström so­na­tas for pia­no and vio­lin.

ARI HELANDER

Ari Helander

Pia­nis­ti Ari He­lan­der (s. 1959) val­mis­tui musii­kin mais­te­rik­si Si­be­lius-Aka­te­mian so­lis­ti­ses­ta kou­lu­tus­oh­jel­mas­ta. Hän toi­mii pia­non­soi­ton leh­to­ri­na Poh­jois-Ky­men musiik­kio­pis­tos­sa Kou­vo­las­sa. He­lan­der on pi­tä­nyt usean vuo­den ajan musiik­ki­luen­to­ja, jois­sa ker­to­mus, musiik­ki ja ku­vat yh­dis­ty­vät. Hän­tä kiin­nos­ta­vat eri­tyi­ses­ti sä­vel­tä­jien ja muusik­ko­jen hen­ki­lö­koh­tai­nen elä­mä sekä se, mi­ten kun­kin ajan po­liit­ti­nen ja yh­teis­kun­nal­li­nen ti­lan­ne on vai­kut­ta­nut hei­hin. He­lan­der on pi­tä­nyt myös mo­nia näyt­te­ly­jä, jois­sa on ol­lut esil­lä va­lo­ku­via ja va­lo­ku­va­kol­laa­se­ja. Pia­nist Ari He­lan­der (b. 1959) recei­ved his Mas­ter of Music degree at the Si­be­lius Aca­de­my. He works as a lec­tu­rer of pia­no music in the Music Ins­ti­tu­te of Nort­hern Kymi in Kou­vo­la. For se­ve­ral years, He­lan­der has gi­ven lec­tu­res that com­bi­ne sto­ry, music and pic­tu­re. He is par­ticu­lar­ly in­te­res­ted in the pri­va­te li­ves of com­po­sers and musicians, and in the way they have been influenced by the po­li­tical and social si­tua­tion of their time. He­lan­der has had also many ex­hi­bi­tions with pho­to­graphs and col­la­ges.

IDA ELINA

Ida Elina

Youtube-ilmiö, laulaja-lauluntekijä ja popkanteletar Ida Elina on Suomessa ja maailmalla ahkerasti keikkaileva artisti, Evento Awards Vuoden Esiintyjä, Vuoden Kantele -tunnustuksen saaja ja 1. kansainvälisten kantelekilpailuiden voittaja.

Klassisen musiikin koulutuksen saanut popkanteletar kehitteli oman pop-kanteleensoittotyylinsä YouTube-kitaristien innoittamana ja samalla ”hänen tekemänsä pop-coverit mullistivat kantelemusiikin” (Helsingin Sanomat).

Ida Elina on konsertoinut muun muassa Pekingissä, Shangaissa ja Hong Kongissa Suomi 100 -juhlavuoden kunniaksi, tehnyt konserttikiertueet Yhdysvalloissa, Saksassa ja Japanissa, esiintynyt Lontoon Chelsea Flower Show’ssa, Helsingin Nordic Business Forumissa, Belgiassa, Ranskassa sekä Kanadassa. Hän on myös konsertoinut ahkerasti Pohjoismaissa sekä Baltiassa, ja suuntaa seuraavaksi Singaporeen.

Ida Elina on vuosien varrella esiintynyt muun muassa Suomen presidenttipari Sauli Niinistölle ja Jenni Haukiolle, presidentti ja nobelisti Martti Ahtisaarelle, presidentti Tarja Haloselle sekä diplomaateille useissa eri maissa. Hän on esiintynyt yhdessä Grammy-voittaja John Lloyd Youngin kanssa sekä tehnyt Suomessa konserttikiertueen Apulannan kanssa.

Youtube-phenomenon, singer-songwriter and pop kantele diva, Ida Elina, is an international touring artist, Evento Awards Performer of the Year, Kantele of the Year, and the winner of the 1st International Kantele Competition.

Trained as a classical musician Ida Elina discovered her unique way of playing her instrument by watching YouTube slap-guitar players and “now her popcovers have revolutionized the way we understand kantele music” (Helsingin Sanomat).

As a concert artist, Ida Elina has performed in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong from the Finland 100 years celebrations. She also has toured USA, Germany and Japan, performed at the Chelsea Flower Show in London and at the Nordic Business Forum in Helsinki and performed in Belgium, France and Canada just to name a few. She tours regularly in Scandinavia and the Baltic Countries and is heading to Singapore in the summer 2019.

Over the years, Ida Elina has performed to the Presidents of Finland, the President and First Lady, Sauli Niinistö and Jenni Haukio, the president and nobelist Martti Ahtisaari and the president Tarja Halonen, as well as to the diplomats in several countries. She has performed with the Grammy winner John Lloyd Young and toured with the iconic Finnish punk band Apulanta.

Ida Elina has appeared on several Finnish tv-broadcasts such as Suuri Journalistigaala (The Great Journalist Gala), Puoli Seitsemän, Urheilugaalassa (The Sports Gala) and Kummien joulukonsertti (The Charity Christmas Concert) among others and on numerous Finnish journals and magazines.

Ida Elina has published 4 albums, Game of My Life (2018), Hello world (2015), Valoisaa Joulua Bright Christmas (2016) and Songs of Freedom (2012) that include her original songs and remain fan-favourites with several songs from the albums requested at each of her live performances. Her original songs from the album are also regularly aired on Finnish radios.

A resident of Espoo albeit born and raised in Northern Ostrobothia, Oulainen, Ida Elina was educated at Sibelius-Academy and in Japan at the Hokkaido University of Education. She sings in several languages, including Mandarin, Japanese and French. Besides performing Ida Elina also teaches her percussive playing style to the kantele players in Finland and abroad in her master classes. She is a passionate runner and a multiple Oulainen city champion in 800 meters.

AGE JUURIKAS

Age Juurikas

Age Juurikas aloitti vuonna 1986 musiikkiopintonsa Merike Brügerin ja Toivo Nahkurin pianoluokalla Tallinnan Music High Schoolissa, valmistuen oppilaitoksesta vuonna 1998. Hän jatkoi opintojaan Viron Musiikki Akatemiassa Peep Lassmannin ja Toivo Nahkurin johdolla, ja valmistui musiikin kandidaatiksi vuonna 2004. Vuosina 2004–2007 Juurikas opiskeli Moskovan konservatoriossa Vera Gornostayevan pianoluokalla (avustajina Sergei Glavatski, Maksim Filippov, sekä Darja Petrova), valmistuen maisteriksi vuonna 2007. Vuonna 2008 Juurikas aloitti tohtoriopinnot Viron musiikki- ja teatteriakatemiassa.

Age Juurikas on suorittanut edellisen lisäksi ulkomaanopintoja Sibelius-Akatemiassa Matti Raekallion (2000–2001), ja Liisa Pohjolan (2002–2003) opissa, sekä Karlsruhen musiikkiyliopistossa Kalle Randalun johdolla. Hän on myös osallistunut useita kertoja Viktor Merzanovin ja Nina Serjoginan mestarikursseille.

Age Juurikkaalle on kertynyt kilpailumenestystä seuraavista kilpailuista: Interpreters of the Baltic States “Alternative ‘97” Riikassa vuonna 1998 (3. sija), Vainiunasin kansainvälinen pianokilpailu Liettuassa (1. sija, sekä kolme erikoispalkintoa), ja “Con Brio ’98”-kilpailu Tallinnassa (pääpalkinto, sekä kaksi erikoispalkintoa). Kansainvälisessä “Arthur Rubinstein in memoriam”-pianokilpailussa Bydgoszczissa Juurikas sai 4. palkinnon, sekä erikoispalkinnon. Tallinnan kansallisissa pianokilpailuissa vuonna 2002 Juurikas sai ensimmäisen palkinnon.

Juurikas on esiintynyt pianistina ja kamarimuusikkona Virossa, Norjassa, Latviassa, Liettuassa, Venäjällä, Suomessa, Tanskassa, Ranskassa, Puolassa, Ukrainassa ja Yhdysvalloissa. Hän on toiminut Viron kansallisorkesterin, Latvian kansallisorkesterin sekä Ukrainan akateemisen kansallisorkesterin solistina. Age Juurikas on konsertoinut useilla kansainvälisillä festivaaleilla, mm. The Piano -festivaalilla ja Glasperlenspiel-festivaalilla Tallinnassa, sekä Upbeat/Nordic Talents-festivaali Norjassa.

Age Juurikkaan lempisäveltäjiin lukeutuvat Sergei Rachmaninov, Sergei Prokofiev, sekä muita venäläissäveltäjiä. Hänen repertuaarinsa sisältää myös virolaisten säveltäjien, kuten Eduard Tubinin teoksia. Vuonna 2003 Juurikas voitti ensimmäistä kertaa jaetun Neeme Järvi Young Musician -palkinnon.

In 1986, Age Juurikas started her music studies at Tallinn Music High School in the piano class of Merike Brüger and Toivo Nahkur which she graduated from in 1998. She continued her studies at the Estonian Academy of Music with Peep Lassmann and Toivo Nahkur, receiving Bachelor’s degree in 2004. In 2004–2007, she studied at the Moscow Conservatoire in the class of Vera Gornostayeva and her assistants Sergei Glavatski, Maksim Filippov and Darja Petrova where she obtained Master’s degree in 2007. In 2008, Juurikas started her PhD studies at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

To improve her skills, Age Juurikas was an exchange student at Sibelius Academy in 2000/2001 with Matti Raekallio and Liisa Pohjola and in 2002/2003, at the University of Music Karlsruhe with Kalle Randalu. Age Juurikas has repeatedly participated in the master courses of Viktor Meržanov and Nina Serjogina.

Since 2007, Age Juurikas works as a lecturer at the piano department of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

Age Juurikas has gained recognition at several competitions: third prize at the contest of interpreters of the Baltic States “Alternative ‘97” in Riga, in 1998, first prize and three special-prizes at the Vainiunas International Piano Competition in Lithuania, main prize and two special prizes at the contest festival “Con Brio ‘98” in Tallinn. She also won forth prize and a special prize at the international piano competition “Arthur Rubinstein in memoriam” in Bydgoszcz and in 2002, first prize at the national piano competition in Tallinn.

Juurikas has held recitals and performed as a chamber musician in Estonia, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Finland, Denmark, Germany, France, Poland, Ukraine and U.S. Juurikas has performed with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and the National Academic Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. She has given concerts at several international music festivals, including The Piano in Tallinn, Eduard Tubin and his time, Glasperlenspiel Music Festival in Estonia and Upbeat/Nordic Talents in Norway.

Since 2003, Juurikas plays in a duo with pianist Mihkel Mattisen.

Age Juurikas’s favorite authors are Sergei Rachmaninov, Sergei Prokofiev and other Russian composers. Her repertoire also includes works by Estonian authors like Eduard Tubin.

In 2003 Age Juurikas won the first Neeme Järvi Young Musician Award.

SOFIA KHVICHIA

Sofia Khvichia

Sofia Khvichia syntyi vuonna 2002 Viron Tallinnassa. Hän aloitti piano-opintonsa kuusivuotiaana Vladimira Ljutovan pianoluokalla Nõmmen musiikkikoulussa. 2016 hän jatkoi Tallinnan musiikkiyläkouluun, jossa hän parhaillaan opiskelee 11. luokka-asteella, opettajinaan Marja Jürisson ja syyskuusta 2018 lähtien myös Age Juurikas.

Sofia on voittanut useita kansallisia kilpailuja, esimerkiksi “Parim noor instrumentalist”(2013), “Eesti kõla” (2016 ja 2018), sekä “I Mart Saar Competition for Estonian Pianists” (2018). Marraskuussa 2019 hänet palkittiin finalistina Viron piano-opettajien yhdistyksen kilpailussa “The Ninth Competition of Estonian Pianists”. Kansainvälistä kisamenestystä Sofia on saavuttanut seuraavissa kilpailuissa: 3. palkinto “Young Musician” -kilpailussa (Estonia, 2013), sekä 1. palkinto “22nd International Competition of Young Pianists in Valmiera” -kilpailussa (Latvia, 2017). Vuonna 2019 hän voitti 4. palkinnon kansainvälisessä “Peter Topercze” -pianokilpailussa Slovakiassa, ja 2. palkinnon kansainvälisessä “Città di San Donà di Piave” -pianokilpailussa Italiassa.

Sofia on myös esiintynyt Tallinnan kamariorkesterin ja Viron kansallisen sinfoniaorkesterin solistina. Hän on osallistunut Mira Marchenkon, Irina Zahharenkovan, Mihkel Pollin, Ada Kuuseokens, Kalle Randalun and Alexander Kobrinin mestarikursseille.

Sofia Khvichia was born in 2002 in Tallinn, Estonia. She began her piano studies at the age of six in the class of Vladimira Ljutova in Nõmme music school. In 2016 she went to Tallinn Music High School, where she is currently studying in 11th grade. Her teacher is Marja Jürisson and since September 2018 also Age Juurikas.

Sofia is the winner of several national competitions such as “Parim noor instrumentalist”(2013), “Eesti kõla” (2016 and 2018) and “I Mart Saar Competition for Estonian Pianists” (2018). In November 2019 she became a finalist and a prize winner of Estonian Piano Teachers Association in “The Ninth Competition of Estonian Pianists”.

She has also received prizes in some international competitions: III prize in “Young Musician” (Estonia, 2013), I prize in “22nd International Competition of Young Pianists in Valmiera”(Latvia, 2017). In 2019 she won IV prize in “Peter Toperczer International Piano Competition”, Slovakia, and II prize in “Città di San Donà di Piave International Piano Competition”, Italy.

Sofia has also performed as a soloist with Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. Sofia has participated in masterclasses by Mira Marchenko, Irina Zahharenkova, Mihkel Poll, Ada Kuuseoks, Kalle Randalu and Alexander Kobrin.

MACKENZIE MELEMED

Mackenzie Melemed

Yhdysvaltalaispianisti Mackenzie Melemed nousi suomalaisyleisön tietoisuuteen voitettuaan vuoden 2017 Maj Lind -pianokilpailun. Sittemmin Suomen läheiseksi kokeva Melemed on kiertänyt maatamme ahkerasti ja saavuttanut soitollaan laajaa ihailua. Melemed sai ensikosketuksensa pianoon kolmivuotiaana, ja intohimo soittamiseen syttyi välittömästi. Hänestä tuli pian ahkera esiintyjä, joka järjesti hyväntekeväisyyskonsertteja, soitti alueensa senioreille ja päätyi jopa konsertoimaan Valkoiseen taloon.

Melemed on palkittu lukuisissa kilpailuissa ja hän on konsertoinut kotimaansa lisäksi monissa Euroopan maissa ja Kiinassa. Viime kauden kohokohtia olivat esiintymiset David Oistrakh -kvartetin kanssa Ruotsissa sekä kiertue KBS Symphony Orchestran solistina Puolassa. Melemed täydentää opintojaan Robert McDonaldin ja Emanuel Axin johdolla New Yorkin Juilliard Schoolin Artist Diploma -ohjelmassa. Vuoden 2019 joulukuussa Melemed debytoi Carnegie Weill Recital Hallissa.

Mackenzie Melemed’s international career continues to flourish. Praised by the New York Times as an ”excellent young pianist” he has performed throughout the United States, in China, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Japan, Korea, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland.

​Melemed’s 2019-20 season focuses mainly on recitals, with engagements in Italy, Finland, France, and throughout the United States. Highlights include his debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall as winner of the Ruiz Memorial Prize on December 13th, chamber music with the San Diego Symphony, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.13 with Finland’s Vaasa City Orchestra, and solo recitals at Paris’ Salle Cortôt, Finland’s Arctic PianoFest, South Orange Performing Arts Center (NJ) and Tuckerman Hall in Worcester, MA. In October 2019, Warner Classics released “Möbius”, featuring his performance of the Jeajoon Ryu Piano Concerto with conductor Ralf Gothóni and Sinfonia Varsovia.

​2018-19 season engagements of note included a concert tour of Finland, where Melemed performed solo recitals, chamber music concerts, and concerti with orchestra. Highlights of that tour included the Symphony premiere of Barber’s Piano Concerto with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and the European premiere of South Korean composer Jeajoon Ryu’s Piano Concerto with Ralf Gothóni and the Kuopio City Orchestra. In November, he was invited to record the Ryu Piano Concerto with Ralf Gothóni and Sinfonia Varsovia for Warner Classics. The CD commemorates 30 years of diplomacy between Korea and Poland. Additional noteworthy engagements included a solo recital at WQXR’s The Greene Space, Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra at Mechanics Hall in Worcester,

MA, performances at the Glafsfjordens Music Festival in Sweden, appearing in concerts with the David Oistrakh Quartet and bassoonist Sebastian Stevensson, and performances of Selim Palmgren’s Piano Concerto No.2 with Finland’s Tampere Filharmonia and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.3 with Finland’s Saimaa Sinfonietta, and performing Jeajoon Ryu’s Piano Concerto on tour with the KBS Symphony Orchestra (Korea) at the Beethoven Eastern Festival in Poland. The concerts were held in Lublin, Katowice (NOSPR), and in Warsaw at the National Philharmonic Hall. In 2018, Melemed’s recording of Avner Dorman’s Three Etudes was released on the Steinway and Sons label.

​In May 2019, Mackenzie Melemed won 3rd Prize in the 1st China International Music Competition, performing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in the final round with The Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin at the National Center for Performing Arts in Beijing. Additional honors include 1st Prize and Chamber Music Prize at the 4th Maj Lind International Piano Competition (August 2017), 1st Prize and Commissioned Work Prize at the 2017 Iowa International Piano Competition, 5th Prize at the 2012 Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Piano Competition in Utah, and the Commissioned Etudes Prize of the 2012 New York International Piano Competition.

​At the age of three, Melemed’s grandfather bought him a keyboard at a yard sale, leading to his enrollment in a beginner piano course. Performances at local senior centers soon became a weekly occurrence, and by the time Melemed turned seven, he had given over 200 concerts for senior citizens and charitable organizations. When Melemed appeared on The Rosie O’Donnell Show, she remarked, “what a bargain!” at the $1 price-tag for the instrument that ignited his passion for music. A series of small local performances connected Melemed with Washington D.C. in 2004, and he was invited to perform at the White House Holiday Open House for five consecutive years. In 2007, only one year after beginning classical training, Melemed won the grand prize at the Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition and gave his Carnegie Hall debut

Currently studying in the highly selective two-year Artist Diploma program at The Juilliard School with Robert McDonald and Emanuel Ax, Melemed holds a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, where he graduated from its prestigious accelerated five-year-dual-degree program. Former teachers include Dean Arvidson, Alexander Korsantia, Olga Rogach and William Smiddy. Additionally, Melemed has been honored to work with distinguished artists, such as Vladimir Feltsman, Stephen Hough, Pavel Gililov, Robert Levin, Susan Starr, Nelita True, and Arie Vardi, among many others. In addition to English and French, Melemed is fluent in Finnish and studied the language at Columbia University for three years.

KIIA NORDLUND

Kiia Nordlund

Kiia Nordlund (s. 2002) opiskelee pianonsoittoa Taideyliopiston Sibelius-Akatemian nuorisokoulutuksessa Tuija Hakkilan sekä Helsingin Konservatoriossa Antti Hotin johdolla. Hän aloitti pianonsoiton 2008 Helsingin Konservatoriossa Anna Linjaman oppilaana.

Kiia on osallistunut useille kotimaisille ja kansainvälisille mestarikursseille opettajina mm. Liisa Pohjola, Liv Glaser, Hyung-ki Joo, Mats Widlund, Paavali Jumppanen, Stefan Bojsten, Mackenzie Melemed ja Konstantin Bogino.

Hän soittaa myös aktiivisesti kamarimusiikkia sekä liediä, joissa hän on saanut ohjausta mm. Sergey Malovilta, Marko Ylöseltä sekä Ilmo Rannalta. Lisäksi Kiia on esiintynyt useissa Sibelius-Akatemian nuorisokoulutuksen ja Suomen Chopin-yhdistyksen tapahtumissa sekä In Corpore-kamarimusiikkifestivaalilla Tallinnan Musiikkiakatemialla. Hänet on palkittu Tapiola-pianokilpailussa ja Steinway Piano festivaalilla. Hän oli myös finalisti Nordic Junior-pianokilpailussa Ruotsissa 2019.

Pro Musica-säätiö myönsi Kiialle apurahan vuonna 2019.

Kiia Nordlund (born 2002) is studying piano at the Sibelius Academy Youth Department with Tuija Hakkila and Helsinki Concervatory with Antti Hotti. She started playing piano at the age of 6 in Helsinki Concervatory of music.

She has participated in many masterclasses with Liisa Pohjola, Liv Glaser, Hyung-ki Joo, Mats Widlund, Paavali Jumppanen, Stefan Bojsten, Mackenzie Melemed and Konstantin Bogino. Besides that, she also performs frequently in chamber music and lied.

Kiia has performed in many Sibelius Academy’s and Chopin Society of Finland’s concerts. She has won prizes in Tapiola piano competition and at Steinway Piano Festival Helsinki. She was also a finalist in Nordic Junior piano competition.

In 2019, Kiia was generously supported by the Pro musica foundation for her studies.

JANNE OKSANEN

Janne Oksanen

Janne Oksanen (s. 1994) soitti ensimmäisen soolokonserttinsa 15-vuotiaana, jonka jälkeen hän on esiintynyt laajasti kotimaan lisäksi monissa Euroopan maissa ja Yhdysvalloissa. Keväällä 2018 hän esitti Toivo Kuulan koko pianotuotannon loppuunmyydyssä Musiikkitalon Camerata-salissa Helsingissä. Yle Radio 1 äänitti konsertin. Konsertin suuren menestyksen ansiosta levytys toteutui vuotta myöhemmin. Syksyllä 2019 Alba Records julkaisi Oksasen debyyttialbumin Kuula: The Piano Works, joka on saanut erinomaisia arvioita, mm. Helsingin Sanomilta 5 tähteä ja paikan ”Vuoden 2019 parhaat albumit” -listalla. Julkaisua seurasi yli 30 kaupungin konserttikiertue.

Oksanen on palkittu useissa kansallisissa ja kansainvälisissä kilpailuissa, mm. Helmi Vesa 2019, Nordic Piano Competition 2017 (Paras Bach-tulkinta), Leevi Madetoja 2012 ja Citta di Ghioggia 2009. Hän on esiintynyt Academy Winds -orkesterin, Vantaan Nuorten Sinfoniaorkesterin ja Tapiolan Nuorten Sinfonikkojen solistina. Oksanen on myös monipuolinen pedagogi. Yhdysvalloissa tunnettu ergonominen pianonsoiton lähestymistapa Taubman Approach paransi hänen pitkäaikaiset rasitusvammansa alkuvuodesta 2017 ja hän on sittemmin syventynyt tämän lähestymistavan opiskeluun ja opettamiseen. Hän kirjoitti aiheesta kirjallisen maisterityönsä Taubman Approach – pianistin parantava voima, joka huomioitiin mm. Rondo-lehdessä. Toukokuussa 2018 hän vieraili Lapin musiikkiopistossa mestarikurssiopettajana ja luennoitsijana.

Oksanen valmistuu musiikin maisteriksi keväällä 2020 Sibelius-Akatemiasta, jossa hän viimeistelee opintojaan

Risto-Matti Marinin johdolla. Pianonsoiton lisäksi hän on opiskellut myös orkesterinjohtoa ja sävellystä. A-tutkintokonsertissaan hän esittää Rachmaninovin 3. pianokonserton. Jenny ja Antti Wihurin rahasto, Suomen Kulttuurirahasto, Paulon Säätiö, Sibelius-Akatemian tukisäätiö ja Kansan Sivistysrahasto ovat tukeneet Oksasen taiteellista toimintaa.

Janne Oksanen (b. 1994) played his first recital at the age of 15 and since then he has performed as a soloist and chamber musician widely in Finland as well as in Europe and USA. In February 2018 he performed the complete works of Toivo Kuula in Sibafest, Helsinki Music Centre, with national Yle Radio 1 broadcasting. Due to the great success of the concert, the recording was made one year later. His debut album Kuula: The Piano Works was released with Alba Records in September 2019. The album collected praise from several reviews and was included on Helsinki Times “The Best Albums of 2019” list. The release was followed by a 33-date concert tour. Oksanen has been succesful in various national and international competitions such as Helmi Vesa 2019, Nordic Piano Competition 2017 in Sweden, Madetoja Piano Competition 2012 and Citta di Ghioggia in Italy 2009. He has performed as soloist with Academy Winds, Vantaa Youth Symphony and Tapiola Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Oksanen is a pursuing pedagogue as well. The Taubman Approach, an ergonomic approach to piano playing healed his long-term playing injuries in 2017 and he has been studying and teaching the approach ever since. He gave a lecture and a masterclass in Lapland Music Institute in 2018.

Oksanen will receive his Master’s degree in Piano Performance in 2020. He is currently studying in the

Master’s Program in Sibelius Academy with Risto-Matti Marin. In 2014-2015 he studied in Conservatoire de Paris with Denis Pascal. His previous teachers include Teppo Koivisto and Rebekka Angervo. He has participated in masterclasses with Pascal Devoyon, Konstantin Bogino, Edna Golandsky, Malcolm Bilson, Alberto Nose, Liisa Pohjola and Matti Raekallio. He has also studied conducting and composition.

VILINA RAINISTO

Vilina Rainisto

Vilina Rainisto (s. 2006) opiskelee pianonsoittoa musiikkiopisto Juvenaliassa Kari Tikkalan johdolla. Nuorten pianoakatemiaan Vilina valittiin vuonna 2018.

Hänet on palkittu Tapiola-pianokilpailussa 2019, 2017 ja 2015, Chioggian pianofestivaalilla Italiassa 2019, Leevi Madetoja -pianokilpailussa 2018, ja hän sai diplomin Young Musician 2017 -kilpailussa Tartossa. Vilina on esiintynyt useissa konserteissa, mm. Chioggian kaupunginorkesterin solistina Italiassa, Camerata Vihti -kamariorkesterin sekä musiikkiopisto Juvenalian Musisoinnin Ilo -sinfoniaorkesterin solistina.

Vilina Rainisto (born 2006) is a student of Kari Tikkala at the Juvenalia Music Institute. She was accepted to the Youth Piano academy in 2018.

Vilina was awarded in the Tapiola Piano Competition in 2019, 2017 and 2015, in Chioggia piano festival, Italy in 2019 and in the Leevi Madetoja Piano Competition in 2018. She was awarded with a diploma in the Young Musician Competition in 2017 in Tartu, Estonia.

Vilina has performed in various concerts. She has performed as a soloist with the Chioggia Orchestra in Italy, Camerata Vihti chamber orchestra and Juvenalia Music Institute’s “Musisoinnin Ilo” symphony orchestra.

OLLI SAARI

Olli Saari

Olli Saari (s. 1990) on opiskellut urkujensoittoa Ville Urposen johdolla Taideyliopiston Sibelius-Akatemian kirkkomusiikin osastolla, jolta hän valmistui musiikin maisteriksi keväällä 2018. Urkuimprovisaatiota hän on opiskellut Markus Malmgrenin ja eri sävellystyylejä Olli Väisälän johdolla. Tällä hetkellä hän täydentää urkurin opintojaan Sibelius-Akatemian esittävän taiteen koulutusohjelmassa opettajanaan Peter Peitsalo. Solistisen urkuohjelmiston esittämisen lisäksi improvisointi ja kamarimusiikki, erityisesti continuo-urkurina- ja cembalistina, ovat olennainen osa Saaren muusikkoutta. Saari on säveltänyt urku-, piano- ja kuoromusiikkia, ja muun muassa kantaesitti urkusonaattinsa Mäntän musiikkijuhlilla kesällä 2019.

Olli Saari (b. 1990) has studied organ performance with Ville Urponen at the Department of Church Music in Sibelius Academy, University of Arts Helsinki, where he graduated from with a masters degree in spring 2018. He studied improvisation with Markus Malmgren and composition styles with Olli Väisälä. He now continues his organ studies at the Department of Music Performance with Peter Peitsalo. Besides performing solo organ music repertoire, improvisation and chamber music, especially as a continuo organist and harpsichordist, are important aspects of Saari’s musicianship. Saari has also composed piano, organ and choir music and he gave the first performance of his Organ Sonata at Mänttä Music Festival in summer 2019.

SEELE-KVARTETTI

Seele-kvartetti

Seele-kvartetti perustettiin vuonna 2015 nuorten soittajien omasta toimesta. Kaikki soittajat ovat myös ansioituneita solisteja ja Sibelius-Akatemian opiskelijoita. Kvartettia on opastanut Sibelius-Akatemiassa Paavo Pohjola, Teemu Kupiainen ja nykyisin Atte Kilpeläinen. Mestarikursseilla heitä on opettanut mm. Marko Ylönen, Meta4 sekä legendaarisen Borodin -kvartetin viulisti Mikhail Kopelman.

Kilpailuissa kvartetti on saavuttanut 1. sijan VI valtakunnallisen Erkki Melartin -kamarimusiikkikilpailun II sarjassa (2016) sekä 2. sijan Rising Stars Grand Prix Berlin -kilpailussa (2017). Vuonna 2018 Radio Classic nimitti kvartetin ”vuoden yhtyeeksi” Tempo-palkinnolla.

Seele-kvartetti on esiintynyt eri puolilla Suomea sekä Virossa ja Englannissa. Kvartetti on myös Kauniaisten musiikkijuhlien residenssiyhtye. Muista festivaaleista mainittakoon Hauhon musiikkijuhlat, Kuhmon kamarimusiikki, Kamari21 sekä Klassinen Hietsu.

The Seele Quartet was founded in 2015. All of the players are established soloists and students of the Sibelius Academy, where they have studied under the instruction of Paavo Pohjola, Teemu Kupiainen and Atte Kilpeläinen. They have also taken part in masterclasses by Marko Ylönen, Meta4 and Mikhail Kopelman, the 1st violin of the legendary Borodin Quartet.

In competitions, the Seele Quartet has won the 1st prize of the Erkki Melartin Chamber Music Competition (2016) and the 2nd prize of the Rising Stars Grand Prix Berlin Competition (2017). In 2018, the Finnish Radio Classic named the quartet ”ensemble of the year” with the Tempo Award.

The Seele Quartet has performed all over Finland as well as in Estonia and England. Since 2018, they have been a residence ensemble of the Kauniainen Music Festival. They have also performed at the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, the Hauho Music Festival, Kamari21 and Klassinen Hietsu.

HENRI SIGFRIDSSON

Henri Sigfridsson

Henri Sigfridsson toimii pianonsoiton professorina Folkwang-yliopistossa Essenissä. Hän on aiemmin ollut vierailevana professorina myös Berliinin Hanns Eisler -musiikkikorkeakoulussa sekä Grazin taideyliopistossa Itävallassa. Sigfridsson on myös toiminut Korsholman Musiikkijuhlien taiteellisena johtajana.

Sigfridsson aloitti piano-opintonsa Turun konservatoriossa Sävy Nordgrénin johdolla ja jatkoi vuonna 1989 opintojaan Sibelius-Akatemiassa Erik T. Tawaststjernan oppilaana. Vuonna 1995 Sigfridsson siirtyi Kölnin musiikkikorkeakouluun professori Pavel Gililovin luokalle, ja vuosina 1995–1997 hän viimeisteli opintonsa Weimarin musiikkikorkeakoulussa Lazar Bermanin johdolla.

Henri Sigfridssonin merkittävin kilpailumenestys on ensimmäinen palkinto joulukuussa 2005 pidetyssä Bonnin Beethoven-kilpailussa, jossa hän sai myös yleisöpalkinnon ja palkinnon parhaasta kamarimusiikkiesityksestä. Vuonna 2004 hän sijoittui toiseksi Maria Callas Grand Prix -kilpailussa Ateenassa. Sigfridssonin muista kilpailumenestyksistä mainittakoon ensimmäinen palkinto Weimarin kansainvälisessä Franz Liszt -pianokilpailussa 1994 ja Pohjoismaisessa solistikilpailussa 1995, sekä toinen sija ja yleisöpalkinto arvostetussa Géza Anda -kilpailussa Zürichissä kesällä 2000. Vuonna 1996 Sigfridsson oli Finland Festivalsin vuoden nuori taiteilija ja Dortmundin Mozart-seura valitsi hänet vuoden taiteilijaksi kaudelle 2001–2002.

Sigfridsson on esiintynyt Keski-Euroopan ja Aasian tärkeimmillä konserttilavoilla Wienin Musikvereinista Tokion Bunka Kaikaniin. Hän on soittanut mm. Zürichin Tonhalle-orkesterin, Pietarin filharmonikoiden sekä useiden merkittävien saksalaisorkesterien solistina, ja hänen kanssaan esiintyneistä kapellimestareista mainittakoon Vladimir Ashkenazy, Dennis Russell Davies ja Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Ahkerana ja toivottuna kamarimusiikkipartnerina tunnettu Sigfridsson on tehnyt yhteistyötä myös mm. Gidon Kremerin, Patricia Kopachinskayan ja Misha Maiskyn kanssa.

Solisti- ja opetusuransa ohella Sigfridsson on toiminut Turussa Wäinö Aaltosen museon konserttisarjan taiteellisena johtajana.

Henri Sigfridsson, winner of the Second Prize of the Zurich Géza Anda Piano Competition 2000, not only impressed the Jury under the chairmanship of Vladimir Ashkenazy, but also won the hearts of many members of the public who attended the final concert in the Zurich Tonhalle, and he walked off with the Géza Anda Audience Prize. In 2005 he won the First Prize at the Beethoven International Piano Competition in Bonn, where he got the Audience Prize and Chamber Music Prize as well. Since 2006 he has been invited as a juror to the Liszt Piano Competition.

He began studying with Sävy Nordgrén at the Turku Conservatory and later at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Professor Erik T. Tawaststjerna. He completed his studies with Professor Pavel Gililov at the Musikhochschule Köln with the highest distinction. During 1995–1997 he studied with Professor Lazar Berman at the Franz Liszt Musikhochschule in Weimar. As a soloist Sigfridsson has regularly played in the foremost concert halls in Central Europe and Asia, from Vienna’s Musikverein to Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan.

He has played with numerous leading orchestras in Europe: the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonics and the Camerata Salzburg with prestigious conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Dennis Russell Davies and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Henri Sigfridsson feels a very deep commitment to chamber music. He has among others appeared with Leonidas Kavakos, Gidon Kremer, Ivry Gitlis, Mischa Maisky, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Sol Gabetta and Johannes Moser.

During 2008–2009 Sigfridsson had a professorship at the Graz University or Music and Dramatic Arts. Since 2010 he is Professor at the Musikhochschule Hanns Eisler in Berlin and now at the Folkwang Universität der Künste, Essen. Beside his career as professor and concert pianist he is the Artistic Director of the concert series in Turku at the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art. He has been the Artistic Director of the Korsholm Music Festival since 2013.

ANTTI SIIRALA

Antti Siirala

Antti Siirala on yksi maamme menestyneimmistä pianisteista. Siirala on voittanut urallaan mm. Leedsin pianokilpailun ja Wienin Beethoven-kilpailun. Häntä on ylistetty äänivärien rikkaudesta, artikuloidusta ja laulavasta fraseerauksesta ja älykkäästä ilmaisusta. Etenkin levytysten Beethovenin kolmesta viimeisestä sonaatista ja kolmoiskonsertosta on nähty tuovan esiin Siiralan mestarillisuuden tulkitsijana. Lisäksi Siirala on levyttänyt mm. Schubertin ja Brahmsin musiikkia. Hänen levytyksiään on palkinnut esimerkiksi Gramophone-lehti.

Antti Siirala on urallaan soittanut tunnettujen kapellimestarien, kuten Herbert Blomstedtin, Sakari Oramon, François-Xavier Rothin ja Esa-Pekka Salosen johdolla.

Hän on esiintynyt esimerkiksi Bambergerin sinfonikkojen, Budapestin festivaaliorkesterin, Birminghamin sinfoniaorkesterin, Lontoon filharmonisen orkesterin, Radion sinfoniaorkesterin ja Wienin sinfonikkojen kanssa.

In April 2000, at the age of twenty, the Finnish pianist Antti Siirala won the London International Piano Competition. Replacing an indisposed finalist at extremely short notice, he carried off the First Prize after a masterly performance of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No.1 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. Born in Helsinki in 1979 into a musical family, Antti Siirala made his début with orchestra at the age of seven and went on to win First Prize in the Juvenalia Chamber Music Competition at the age of thirteen. Since then, he has been awarded prizes in eight music competitions in Finland.

A student at the Sibelius Academy with Matti Raekallio and Ivari Ilja, he was also encouraged by Mitsuko Uchida and Murray Perahia. Before his triumph in London he had already won Second Prize in the Dino Ciani Competition in Milan, and First Prize and a special award for the best performance of a late Beethoven Sonata (‘Hammerklavier’) in the Beethoven Competition in Vienna. He has given recitals and appeared as a soloist with wellknown orchestras in major cities and festivals throughout Europe and in the United States. His début recording of Liszt Schubert transcriptions for Naxos forms part of the Grand Prize of the London International Piano Competition.
