The above quote has proven more prophetic than we could have imagined when we first wrote this greeting over seven months ago; its initial purpose was to describe to you the magic of Tyvan Hill as we welcomed you to the 19th Designer Showhouse and Gardens presented by the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC). The fact that we can open our doors four months after our intended opening day, after the world experienced such great anguish and uncertainty, reinforces our belief that this splendid house and Mansion in May 2020 were always meant to be; welcome to the magic of Tyvan Hill! We invite you to revel in the creativity the designers drew upon to fabricate each of the spectacular spaces you will visit today and imagine the inspiration behind every detail that is here to delight you, the visitor. This is truly a Mansion in May that will leave you inspired. Have you ever wondered how a Mansion in May comes to fruition? It is an adventure that is sometimes years in the making as we search for the perfect property to enchant our visitors. Once we have located our dream house, the planning begins anew with excitement and anticipation nearly one year before we open our doors to the public. Gathering a committee of dedicated, hardworking, energetic, thoughtful and brilliant volunteers is the first item on the checklist. For this Mansion, we are an Executive Committee of 60 women and men; this number doesn’t include each committee’s committee! In turn, each committee consists of another group of remarkable volunteers all contributing their time and talents toward our one common goal: to present you with a premier Showhouse and Gardens while raising funds for a community-benefiting initiative of Morristown Medical Center (MMC) — this year, the much-needed expansion of our top-ranked Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute. In retrospect, the additional space provided by the Gagnon expansion proved to be vitally important as MMC seamlessly steered our community through the COVID-19 crisis. Once we take possession of the house in January, we are 10

off and running. Designers, who have been selected through the painstaking efforts of our design and landscape committees, revisit and plan, the operations team tackles every working element, Harding Township officials consult, parties are planned, tours are scheduled, history is unearthed, articles are written, tickets are designed and sold, websites are built, boutique vendors are established, tents are pitched, parking is sought, contracts are negotiated and pencils are sharpened. The list could go on and on! Every element of what you see and enjoy is as spectacular as it is because of our group of dedicated supporters. Truly, a Mansion in May’s doors would not open without each of them and our 1,500 or so additional volunteers who will guide you through your Tyvan Hill visit. As the American writer Elbert Hubbard said:

“Do your work with your whole heart and you will succeed ...” We thank each and every member of our incredible committees and our volunteers for helping us succeed! As you will learn on your visit and elsewhere in this Journal, Tyvan Hill is deeply rooted in Morristown Medical Center’s history. The land upon which it is built was originally owned by the ancestors of Dr. Frederick T. Van Beuren, president of the then Morristown Memorial Hospital from 1933 until 1943. The first three proprietresses of Tyvan Hill — Dorothea Castles, Dorothy Weed and Anne McGraw — were all active members of our Women’s Association, each contributing with passion for many years! Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Tyvan Hill’s current owners, Michael and Tracey Battista, for first granting us a lease and then extending it, this remarkable mansion on the hill continues its storied history with MMC by enabling us to share its beauty and splendor with you all while helping us raise our pledged amount of $1.5 million to support Gagnon’s expansion. Heart disease affects all of us, young and old alike, and this magnificent home ensconced in both our medical center’s and WAMMC’s lore once again finds itself filled with people giving their all to make a difference in the lives of others. As we hope you can see, Mansion in May 2020 is an enormous undertaking that could not have come to fruition without a multitude of elements merging to create this most remarkable and memorable event. It began with the Battista family’s willingness to share their fabulous house with us so we could, in turn, share it with you. In addition, the support we have received from our sponsors — including corporate, individual and in-kind — has been tremendous and has played a huge role in moving us closer to the reality of fulfilling WAMMC’s donation pledge to our cause. Please take the time to review the names of all of our sponsors in this Journal. Regardless of the amount of their donations, the fact that they each stepped up to help when asked makes them all equally vital to our mission. To our host town, Harding Township, we thank you for being a thoughtful, responsive and supportive team. You have made our stay in your

neighborhood pleasant in every sense of the word! To our remarkable interior and landscape designers, thank you for the enormous effort each of you made to bring the gardens and Tyvan’s rooms to life for our visitors to savor. You have given new meaning to the definition of creativity, and we are honored that you chose “us” to display your stunning designs. To our boutiques, thank you for allowing us to add a shopping excursion for our visitors’ enjoyment. To our caterers, thank you for tantalizing our taste buds. And last but far from least, to Atlantic Health System, Trish O’Keefe and her entire staff at Morristown Medical Center. While the past few months have been the greatest challenge our medical center has ever faced, your brilliant leadership and the dedication of the staff has shown why MMC is the number one hospital in the state. To Jim Quinn and the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center, your support at every twist and turn along the way was unwavering. A Message from the WAMMC President

As I write this, we are in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis and are making plans to present Mansion in May 2020 as Splendor in September. We are truly grateful for the amazing staff at Morristown Medical Center (MMC) and for their tireless hours spent caring for our community during this most challenging time. Special thanks to Dr. Trish O’Keefe for her exemplary leadership not only during these trying months but also for her masterful ways to make Morristown Medical Center the best hospital in New Jersey. As president of the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC), I am honored to be associated with MMC. On behalf of the Women’s Association, I welcome you with great enthusiasm to Tyvan Hill. Built in 1928 on part of the Van Beuren estate in the French-Norman farmhouse style, Tyvan Hill has a historical connection to WAMMC. The original owner’s wife, Dorothea Castles, was a member of the Executive Committee, helped establish the Corner Store gift shop and was a trustee at what was then Morristown Memorial Hospital. Tyvan Hill is WAMMC’s 19th Mansion in May, our signature fundraising event. First held 46 years ago at Upton Pyne in Somerset Hills, Mansion in May has raised over $12 million for worthy causes, including the recently established Center for Nursing Innovation and Research in 2017. This year, we are pleased to support the expansion of the Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at MMC to provide 72 new private rooms, which will directly enhance and expand the quality of care for cardiac patients. Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute is ranked first in New Jersey and 28th in the United States for cardiovascular diagnostic and treatment services. We thank all the doctors and nurses at Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute for their dedication and skilled work which help make it a worldclass facility for MMC. It always takes a village to make Mansion in May a success. First, we recognize the generosity of the homeowner, 529 Waterfront Properties LP, which has graciously allowed us to showcase this magnificent property in New Vernon. We are grateful to Harding Township, and more specifically to its municipal officers, staff and residents (especially the neighbors of Tyvan Hill on Van Beuren Road) for their support, which has enabled us to host the month-long

designer showhouse and gardens. We thank the creative, skilled and talented interior and landscape designers, craftspeople, contractors and all who have helped transform this property from blank walls and empty gardens into magnificent interior and exterior spaces. We also thank our generous corporate, individual and in-kind sponsors and donors whose continued support has contributed to the success of many Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens. This support allows us to achieve ambitious and rewarding goals, such as the Gagnon expansion. Mansion in May requires a substantial commitment from numerous volunteers to whom we are grateful and who embody WAMMC’s motto of “Contributing with Passion.” This passion resonates from the top, beginning with Mansion in May 2020’s Co-Chairs Pat O’Connor and Kathy Ross. Pat and Kathy led a team of dedicated committee chairs to handle all the intricate details that go into presenting this designer showhouse and gardens. Without their leadership, as well as the dedication of every passionate volunteer, we would not be able to offer this wonderful experience to our guests. Over the decade that Gagnon’s heart hospital on the Morristown Medical Center campus has welcomed inpatients and outpatients, the evaluation and management of heart disease has seen enormous strides, and Gagnon has contributed in many ways to these advances. Ranked in the top 30 heart programs in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Gagnon has recognized expertise in each of cardiology’s major disciplines: cardiac surgery (largest program in New Jersey); cardiac catheterization and stenting for patients with coronary disease; cardiac rhythm management; surgical and nonsurgical valve repair/replacement; an innovative heart failure management program; advanced imaging; and a women’s heart program. Our transcatheter aortic valve replacement program is the largest in New Jersey and one of the top five in the country. Highly specialized programs include one to treat a common hereditary condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), the most frequent cause of death in young athletes; a cardio-oncology program to detect and treat heart problems that can result from cancer treatment; a sports cardiology program for athletes of all ages; and an inherited rhythm disorder program. A wellrounded vascular program manages diseases of the body’s arteries and veins, while Gagnon’s research division supports both investigator-initiated studies as well as industry and federally funded clinical trials to test new life-saving diagnostic, medical, surgical and interventional approaches. A high-volume referral center, Gagnon averages close to 100,000 patient visits a year. Patients come from several New Jersey counties, including Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Union, Essex, Warren,

Hunterdon, Passaic, Middlesex, Ocean, Bergen and Monmouth, as well as parts of Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New York state. Patients from around the world seek care through our hypertrophic cardiomyopathy program. Gagnon’s programs have grown so significantly since its inception that patient demand has nearly outstripped the capacity to provide care. Gagnon currently operates at 99% inpatient occupancy! Gagnon’s leadership believes demand for beds will continue to increase as the population ages and our reach continues to expand. The solution is an ambitious facilities expansion to meet current and future growth. Two new inpatient floors will give us 72 additional beautiful private rooms, including those designed for higher acuity care. In addition, we will be adding a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) magnet to allow us to expand access to advanced cardiovascular imaging at Morristown Medical Center. Anna Dorothea Bradford Smith Castles (1899-1975) — who was known as Dorothea — was a daughter and granddaughter of Vermont governors and a graduate of Miss Porter’s School in Connecticut. She was an awardwinning photographer and professional teacher of photography, an author, book reviewer for the New York

Herald Tribune, social activist, board member of the Urban League and Recording for the Blind, and a skilled needlepoint worker. During World War II, while her husband was serving overseas, Dorothea served on the executive committee, and was director of group activities, for the Civilian Defense Volunteer Office of the City of New York.

Dorothea Castles was, like the two women who subsequently owned Tyvan Hill — Dorothy Garrett Weed and Anne Williams McGraw — active in the Women’s Association of what was then Morristown Memorial Hospital. Dorothea also served on the board of trustees of Morristown Memorial throughout much of the 1950s and was also a trustee of Sydenham Hospital in Harlem. John and Dorothea Castles were married in Vermont in 1920, after which they settled in New York City, where John was working. Until they and their two children moved to Tyvan Hill, they also maintained a country residence in a Colonial Revival-style house on Normandy Parkway in Morris Township that was jointly owned by John and his widowed mother. In 1927 John and Dorothea purchased a 115-acre farm in New Vernon from a member of the prom inent Van Beuren family. They named the property, and the 32

house they soon built there, Tyvan Hill. New Vernon, which had long been known for its unspoiled, pastoral country side and romantic attachments to the area’s role in the American Revolution, was being developed during the 1920s and 1930s into what became a quilt-like pattern of large, adjoining country estates, prominently including Tyvan Hill. Soon after purchasing the property, John and Dorothea set about developing it with three new buildings: their own residence at the top of the hill (the site of this year’s Mansion in May); a nearby house built for John’s then-widowed sister, Frances, and her children; and a combined stable, garage, and chauffeur’s cottage at the foot of the hill. The property already included a group of nineteenth century barns and other farm-related structures that had been built by a Van Beuren relation.

The new buildings on the estate were designed in 1928 and 1929 by the New York architectural firm of Peabody, Wilson & Brown in a complementary, eclectic style featuring NormanFrench and Colonial Revival elements. The architectural significance of Tyvan Hill was first recognized in 1931 by the Architectural League of New York, which awarded its prestigious silver medal to the Peabody firm for a group of eight of the firm’s residential designs. Prominent among that group was Tyvan Hill, a photograph of which was featured in newspaper and architectural journal reports about the award. Today, the three buildings constructed by the Castles family in the late 1920s stand as elegant private residences on separate parcels of land, and all three are listed in the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places as contributing buildings in Harding Township’s Silver Lake Historic District.

Several of Dorothea Castles’ awardwinning photographs were reproduced in American Photography magazine, including: April Night, a scene in New York’s Central Park (1941); Lines and Shadows (1940); and Uriah Heep, a whimsical take on the sycophantic fictional character in Charles Dickens’ novel David Copperfield (1940).

The Castles Family The Castles family’s connection to the Morristown area began nearly twenty-five years before John and Dorothea purchased the Tyvan Hill property. John Wesley Castles Jr. was born in New Orleans in 1893. He and his sister, Frances, who was born the following year, were the only children of John Wesley Castles Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Eshleman, who had married in 1891. Elizabeth, sometimes known as Bessie, was a daughter of Benjamin Franklin Eshleman, a wealthy hardware merchant and prominent citizen of New Orleans who had served as a colonel in the Confederate army during the Civil War. The senior John Castles was born in Bryan, Texas, in 1858, a son of George W. Castles, a physician and farmer. In 1880 John moved to Waco, Texas, where he entered the pharmaceutical and grocery businesses that evolved into the firm of Cameron, Castles & Storey. About ten years later he moved to New Orleans to manage the firm’s businesses in that larger market. John entered the banking business in New Orleans in 1892 and soon became president of the Southern National Bank. Shortly thereafter, Southern National was merged into the larger Hibernia National Bank, of which Castles became president. Given his success in growing the renamed Hibernia Bank and Trust Company, John Castles Sr. and his family moved to New York in 1904 when he was named president of the Guaranty Trust Company. In late 1908, nearly five years after joining Guaranty Trust, Castles resigned, having lost out to financiers Edward H. Harriman and George F. Baker in a bid to acquire Mutual Life Insurance Company’s con trolling block of the bank’s stock. Within weeks, though, Castles was named president of the Union Trust Company, then one of New York’s largest banks. Reportedly despondent over the events at Guaranty Trust, and despite treatment for “melancholia” at a sanitarium in Mansion in May 2020

tract along James Street comprises Harding Land Trust’s Frelinghuysen Fields conservation area. As it happens, the 115acre New Vernon property that John and Dorothea Castles purchased in 1927 abutted and overlooked the land John’s father had briefly owned nearly twenty years before. Following her husband’s death, Elizabeth Castles and the couple’s two children continued to maintain residences in both Morris County and New York City for most of the rest of their lives. In 1912 Elizabeth purchased the stone Colonial Revival mansion that had been built about four years before by Edgar and Bertha Macy Van Vleck on Normandy Parkway in Morris Township. Elizabeth named the property The Crossways, the name undoubtedly derived from the triangular shape of the six-plus-acre tract located at the intersection of Normandy Parkway, Columbia Turnpike (now Columbia Road), and a later-abandoned road that ran along the southwestern property line. Two years after purchasing the Van Vleck house, Elizabeth conveyed a half interest in the property to her twenty-one-yearold son, John Castles Jr., who intermittently occupied The Crossways with his own family until construction of Tyvan Hill was completed in 1929. Elizabeth would later occupy the charming, cottage-like Frederick Winston Merrell house on Macculloch Avenue in Morristown.

John Wesley Castles Jr. John Wesley Castles Jr. was graduated from Yale College in 1915. He had been a halfback on the varsity football team and had been “tapped” in his junior year to be a member of Scroll and Key, one of Yale’s elite senior societies. A friend, classmate, and fellow member of Scroll and Key was Dean Gooderham Acheson, who later served as secretary of state under President Harry S. Truman and whose son married John and Dorothea Castles’ daughter, Patricia. John enrolled at Columbia Law School in the fall of 1915, but completion of his law education was interrupted by military service in World War I. He received his commission as a first lieutenant in the New York National Guard in April 1917 and was assigned to command a company in the Guard’s 15th New York Infantry Regiment, later known as the 369th Regiment but more commonly known as the “Harlem Hellfighters” because it was primarily composed of African-American soldiers. After training in the United States, Castles and his company of infantrymen arrived in France on New Year’s Day 1918. Castles was later transferred from the infantry to the newly organized Tank Corps commanded by Lt. Col. George S. Patton Jr. He was assigned to the 344th Battalion, and in September 1918, near Varennes-en-Argonne, France, at the start of the Meuse-Argonne offensive, the turret of the small, two-man Renault tank in which he and Cpl. riding was half blown off by a high-explosive German artillery shell. Although choked by gas from the shell, Cpl. Call managed to escape the tank and jump into a foxhole. Seeing that Castles, who had been in the turret, did not follow, Call returned to the tank under intense machine gun- and shell-fire, pulled the unconscious Castles out and carried him over a mile to safety. For his valor, Call was promoted and awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States’ highest and most prestigious military decoration, which was presented to him by General John J. Pershing in 1919. Call, who before the war had been a Harvard-educated landscape architect and actor, also was awarded the French Legion of Honor in the degree of chevalier and the Croix de Guerre with palm. John Castles was awarded the Purple Heart medal for his injuries in the line of fire. Castles’ diaries and other papers from World Wars I and II were donated after his death to the United States Military Academy at West Point. His detailed and absorbing World War I diary, which includes his experiences commanding an African-American infantry unit, is used today in West Point’s course on diversity in the military. After his discharge from the Army, in 1919, Castles returned to complete his degree at Columbia Law School, after which he joined the New York firm of Lord, Day & Lord. He remained at the law firm for about ten years before joining the stock brokerage firm of Charles D. Barney & Co. In 1938 the Barney firm merged with Edward B. Smith & Co. to form the investment bank of Smith, Barney & Co., of which Castles became a partner. Through his work at the brokerage firms, Castles became a director of several companies, including the Glenn L. Martin Company (now Lockheed Martin Corporation), Tri-Continental Corporation (a closed-end mutual fund), the Continental Bank and Trust Company, and Thomas Young Nurseries, Inc. of Middlesex, New Jersey, which was once one of the world’s largest growers of orchids.

John and Dorothea Castles’ Marriage On August 25, 1920, in the Congregational Church at St. Albans, Vermont, John Wesley Castles Jr. married Anna Dorothea Bradford Smith, the only daughter of banker and former Vermont Governor Edward Curtis Smith and his wife, the former Anna Bailey James. Dorothea’s paternal grandfather, J. Gregory Smith, had also been a governor of Vermont, serving during the Civil War. Dorothea’s attendants included friends from Miss Porter’s School. John’s groomsmen included friends from Yale as well as his brotherin-law, Pomeroy Tucker Francis, and Dorothea’s three brothers. The wedding presents included a sterling silver punch bowl from Tiffany & Co. given to the couple by Castles’ fellow Yale classmates who were members of Scroll and Key. The bowl featured the Scroll and Key insignia and, around the circumference of the base, the inscribed names of the fifteen men who were in Castles’ Scroll and Key delegation from the class of 1915. After the wedding, the couple sailed to Europe on the Cunard Line’s RMS Aquitania for a two-month honeymoon, touring England and France and visiting the battlefields of the Great War where John had seen action. 36

Kennedy to be the United States attorney for the District of Columbia. He resigned as U.S. attorney in 1965 when President Johnson announced Acheson’s appointment to be a special assistant to Secretary of the Treasury Henry H. Fowler. After leaving the Treasury Department, Acheson worked for Communications Satellite Corporation, the law firm known today as Jones Day, and later served as president of the Atlantic Council.

John and Dorothea in World War II With the start of World War II, John Castles became a limited partner at Smith, Barney and re-entered active service in the United States Army. Although he wanted to rejoin the tank corps — then known as the First Armored Division — to serve under his old commanding officer and friend, General George S. Patton Jr., Castles was instead assigned to the Army’s “G-2” military intelligence unit at the headquarters of the European Theater of Operations in London. Promoted to colonel, Castles rose to become G-2’s deputy chief of staff. After D-Day, he was posted with Gen. Omar N. Bradley’s Twelfth United States Army Group headquarters in France. At the end of the war, Castles joined his former partner from Charles D. Barney & Co., Lt. Col. Jay Cooke, in running Cooke’s newly formed Citizens Committee for Universal Military Training. The group promoted the idea of required military training for all young men, believing that such a program would help maintain military preparedness and be more democratic than the draft. Despite support from President Truman’s administration, the effort ultimately failed because the draft continued to be extended by Congress year after year and the country as a whole was tired of war. During the war, Dorothea Castles served on the executive committee, and was the director of group activities, for the Civilian Defense Volunteer Office of the City of New York. She organized the Civilian Defense War Information Center at Pershing Square, across Forty-Second Street from Grand Central Terminal. The center brought together in one place representatives from the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, Red Cross, USO, United Hospital Fund, the Treasury Department’s office for the sale of war bonds, as well as other key federal, state, and city agencies. Later in the war, Dorothea directed the Civilian Defense organization’s Neighborhood Representative Division, which linked some 20,000 block leaders throughout the city to help keep residents informed of volunteer needs and activities. She also co-hosted a Civilian Defense radio program, “News and Letters From Home and Abroad,” on WNYC, which was then the city-owned radio station. After the war, Dorothea compiled the Civilian Defense Volunteer Office’s published history of its many and diverse activities.

Pomeroy Francis was a part owner of the Troy Times (NY) newspaper that had been founded in 1851 by his grandfather, John Morgan Francis. John Francis later served as United States minister to Greece, Portugal, and Austria-Hungary. Pomeroy’s father, Charles Spencer Francis, also was a diplomat who served as this country’s minister to Greece, Austria-Hungary, and Romania. In addition to his part ownership of the Troy Times, Pomeroy Francis worked as a bond salesman at the New York investment bank of Clark, Dodge & Co.

The year after their marriage, Frances and Pomeroy purchased a two-acre lot on Normandy Parkway, catty-cornered across the street from Frances’s mother’s house, The Crossways. The couple retained the New York architectural firm of Tracy & Swartwout to design their Colonial Revival house, which they named Shadowlawn. Shadowlawn and The Crossways, which was also designed by Tracy & Swartwout, remain among the most beautiful houses on Normandy Parkway. Pomeroy Francis died in 1922 at the age of thirty-four while undergoing surgery for a pulmonary abscess. About seven years later, his widow, Frances, her three children, and her servants,

consisting of a maid, cook, butler, nurse, and chauffeur, moved into the new French-Norman-style house that had been constructed on her brother and sister-in-law’s Tyvan Hill estate. Given its location on a west-facing hill overlooking the fields of New Vernon — including the James Street property Frances’s father had once owned — the residence was aptly called Sunset House. In 1930, Frances joined and became active in the Women’s Organization for National Prohibition Reform, which had been organized the year before by Pauline Morton Sabin, a wealthy, socially prominent, and politically well-connected New Yorker. Male leaders of temperance organizations contemptuously and dismissively described the organization as “a little group of wineMansion in May 2020

drinking society women” and “Bacchantian maidens, parching for wine.” By 1932, however, the national membership totaled some 600,000 women, the organization had become a powerful voice in the repeal of Prohibition, and Frances had become one of its leaders. Her sister-in-law and neighbor at Tyvan Hill, Dorothea Castles, also joined the organization and served as vicechair of its New Jersey chapter. On New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1932, Frances married her second husband, Thomas Preston Lockwood. Born and raised in Missouri, Preston was graduated in 1912 from Washington University in St. Louis, after which he spent a year at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He then worked for a time as a reporter for the New York World and The New York Times in London. Soon after the start of World War I, Lockwood volunteered with the American Field Service in France, where he drove an ambulance. When the United States entered the conflict, he was commissioned a first lieutenant with the American Expeditionary Force. After the war, Lockwood taught at the Columbia School of Journalism while earning his professional degree at Columbia Law School. Admitted to the New York bar in 1924, Lockwood first worked as an associate at the New York law firm of White & Case and later was a partner with Davisson & Manice and its successor firms. Lockwood was a director of the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation from 1929 to 1941. Four years later be became president of Brewster Aeronautical Corporation, which had been run by Henry J. Kaiser under a navy contract to manufacture Corsair fighter planes for the war effort. In 1944 Frances and Preston Lockwood gained title to Sunset House and a surrounding eighteen-acre tract of the Tyvan Hill estate from her brother and sister-in-law. The Lockwoods soon sold the property and moved full-time to New York City. Preston died in 1951 and Frances in 1964.

The Tyvan Hill Property

The 115-acre tract that John and Dorothea Castles bought in 1927 offered expansive hilltop views in all directions overlooking New Vernon at a time when the area was largely farmland and sparsely treed. The property had long been part of the extensive acreage acquired in the mid-nineteenth century by the family of Col. Michael Murray Van Beuren and his wife, Mary Spingler Fonerden. Antecedents of the Van Beuren family, the Bonsalls, had owned land in the vicinity going back to 1813. The Castles’ property included The Acacias, the former country estate of Cornelius Berrien Mitchell and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Davis, a granddaughter of Michael and Mary Van Beuren. It was on the site of the Mitchell family’s house that the Castles’ stable, garage, and chauffeur’s cottage was built in 1929. In addition to properties in Morris County, the Van Beuren family also had long and deep ties to New York City, where its extensive landholdings formed the primary source of the family’s wealth. In 1788 Henry Spingler, Mary Van Beuren’s grandfather, purchased

a twenty-two-acre tract centered around what is now Fourteenth Street and Fifth Avenue and included a substantial part of what is now Union Square. Spingler had immigrated to America from Germany some thirty years before and had become a successful merchant in the city. The twenty-two-acre property he purchased — which was about the same size as today’s Rockefeller Center — would eventually become a very valuable residential, and later commercial, district of Manhattan. Beginning in the early years of the twentieth century, and particularly during the 1920s, the New Vernon area, where the Van Beurens owned much land, came to attract more and more wealthy businessmen from New York and Newark who were interested in acquiring sizeable tracts of land to develop into country estates. With nostalgic and patriotic attachments to the two military encampments in the Morristown area during the American Revolution, a bucolic landscape of gently rolling hills long

dominated by small, family-owned farms, and a lack of commercial or industrial development, the New Vernon section of what was then Passaic Township was ripe for a transition into an area of estates. Being within an easy commuting distance to New York and Newark and adjacent to the established affluent colonies of Morristown, Madison, Summit, and the Somerset Hills, only added to New Vernon’s appeal. Over time, however, the lifestyles and interests of the estate owners in the New Vernon area began to diverge from those residents living elsewhere in the township. As a result, in 1922 the northern areas of the township around New Vernon broke away to form Harding Township, named for Warren G. Harding, who was then president. Seventy years later, in 1992, the remaining portion of what had been Passaic Township changed its name to Long Hill Township. To more effectively preserve the pastoral setting of the new Harding Township, in 1928 virtually all of the estate owners in the area — including John and Dorothea Castles — executed deeds

adopting the New Vernon Neighborhood Restrictive Agreement. A forerunner of local zoning ordinances, the agreement’s purpose was to maintain the rural estate appearance of the area by restricting commercial uses and the subdivision of property.

Tyvan Hill and Equestrian Pursuits Equestrian activities have long been popular in the New Vernon area. The Spring Valley Hounds were organized in 1915 and run, until 1933, as a private hunt by invitation of the founder, Seth E. Thomas Jr. Thomas was a grandson and namesake of the renowned clockmaker and the husband of Josephine Frederica Van Beuren, a granddaughter of Col. and Mrs. Michael M. Van Beuren. Initially a harrier pack that hunted imported Belgian and Polish hares, the hunt until 1934 was usually known as the Spring Valley Harriers. The club later obtained a pack of foxhounds and hunted fox. Today, the Spring Valley Hounds is run on a subscription basis as a “drag” hunt. follow a contrived scent that is laid, or dragged, over a course the morning before a hunt. With little open farmland remaining in the New Vernon area, the Spring Valley Hounds today hunt the scenic countryside in Sussex and Warren counties in northwestern New Jersey. Both the courtyard of Tyvan Hill and the fields adjacent to the original estate stable — later the Thomas G. Walker family’s Glynden residence — once served as meeting points for the Spring Valley Hounds. Meets at Glynden began in the mid1950s, and by the early 1960s it had become a tradition for the Thanksgiving Day meet to be held at Tyvan Hill, which at that time was owned by the McGraw family. In addition to the hunting of hares and fox, trail riding was also very popular in Morris County. In 1920, Seth Thomas and a group of fellow equestrians organized the Morris County Bridle Path Association to plan, construct, and maintain a network of bridle paths in the region. from between 1925 and 1930, depicting the network of bridle paths as well as area estates and other landmarks has long been a fixture at Tyvan Hill.

The Architects The three new structures built by John and Dorothea Castles on their estate — the main Tyvan Hill stone and brick and tile-roofed residence; Sunset House, built for John’s sister; and the stable, garage, and chauffeur’s cottage at the foot of the hill — were all designed between 1928 and 1929 by the New York architectural firm of Peabody, Wilson & Brown and built by the prominent Summit construction firm of Russell Hinman. The firm of Peabody, Wilson & Brown was one of the preeminent and prolific designers of large country residences from about 1911 until senior partner Julian Livingston Peabody’s untimely death, in 1935. In January of that year, Peabody and his wife, Celestin Hitchcock, were among the passengers on the liner SS Mohawk

bound for the Caribbean and Central America when the ship struck a freighter at night off the New Jersey coast. The Mohawk soon sank in the frigid waters and the Peabodys were among the forty-seven dead. After Peabody’s death, his partners, Albert E. Wilson and Archibald M. Brown, decided to disband the firm. Julian Peabody and Archibald Brown were both Harvard- and École des Beaux-Arts-trained architects. Albert Wilson received his professional education at Columbia University. Much of the firm’s work was in New York state, especially on Long Island, where two of the partners lived. The firm also had many commissions in New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as in South Carolina, Virginia, and Ohio, and as far afield as Tahiti. The firm’s designs were primarily in various modes of Colonial Revival and Norman-French styles, while abstaining from both Tudor and Gothic architecture. In light of the partners’ strong personal ties to Long Island and its history, the firm also produced a number of country houses in what has come to be called the Long Island Farmhouse idiom. As Barbara Ferris Van Liew wrote in Long Island Country Houses and Their Architects, 1860–1940, “the firm’s position within the framework of contemporaneous architecture was mainstream, neither retardataire nor avant-garde, but nevertheless consistently progressive, innovative, even pioneering.” In New Vernon, in addition to the three commissions for the Castles family, the Peabody firm also designed Rathmelton, the stone, Georgian-style residence of New York bank executive Howard Bayne and his wife, the former Louise D. Van Beuren. Rathmelton was designed and built at about the same time as Tyvan Hill, and both houses were among the eight residential designs cited by the Architectural League in 1931 in awarding its silver medal in architecture to the Peabody firm. Howard and Louise Bayne were prominent and generous residents of Harding Township, where they had lived since about 1910. Howard was among the group of citizens who, in 1928, promulgated the New Vernon Neighborhood Restrictive Agreement to maintain the area’s rural beauty and restrict commercial development. In 1937 he generously donated a thirteen-plus-acre tract along Blue Mill and Glen Alpin roads to serve as a community park, now called Bayne Park. In 1959, the year following Bayne’s death, it was announced that his estate had made a $2 million gift to Morristown Memorial Hospital to help fund an addition. The Bayne bequest reportedly represented about forty percent of the total construction cost. In the nearby Somerset Hills, Peabody, Wilson & Brown had three architectural commissions, all for members of the Schley family. The first was a virtually new house built on the foundation of banker Grant Schley’s original Froh Heim mansion in Far Hills. The new Froh Heim, which was designed and built around 1917 for one of Schley’s sons, Evander, was a Spanish-style, stone-andstucco house with a red-tile roof that was quite unlike anything else the Peabody firm ever designed. in the 1930s by architect F. Burrall Hoffman Jr., Froh Heim was the Women’s Association’s Mansion in May in 2008. The Peabody firm also designed two other houses in Far Hills: Seven Oaks (ca. 1918), which burned down in 1924, and Ripplebrook (1931), which incorporated portions of an eighteenth century house from Rocky Hill, Connecticut. Both houses were designed for Reeve Schley and his wife, the former Kate de Forest Prentice, who were the grandparents of former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman.

Ties to Morristown’s Hospitals and the Women’s Association Over the years several of the families associated with Tyvan Hill and adjacent properties have had notable connections to the hospitals of Morristown and to the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center. In 1920, Frances Castles Francis, who later lived at Sunset House on the Tyvan Hill estate, endowed a patient room in what was then Morristown Memorial Hospital. In 1932 Dorothea Castles served

as secretary and a member of the executive committee of the Women’s Association, and in 1949 she chaired the association’s committee that planned and opened the Corner Store, the hospital’s first gift shop. Beginning in 1953 Dorothea served on the board of trustees of the hospital. The two women who subsequently owned Tyvan Hill, Dorothy Virginia Garrett, the wife of Douglas Bowman Weed, and Anne Schuyler Williams, the wife of Donald Cushing McGraw Jr., also were active members of the Women’s Association. 1960s all three women who owned or had owned Tyvan Hill — Dorothea Castles, Dorothy Weed, and Anne McGraw — were members of the Women’s Association at the same time. Also, one of the McGraw family’s four sons volunteered at the hospital, serving for several years as a junior and then associate corpsman. The Van Beuren family that had once owned the property that became the Tyvan Hill estate also had ties to both Morristown Memorial and the former All Souls’ Hospital on Mt. Kemble Avenue. Dr. Frederick Theodore Van Beuren, who lived just down Van Beuren Road, was, from 1933 until his death in 1943, president of Morristown Memorial; his wife, the former Jessica T. Mohlman, was for many years a member of the hospital’s board of trustees. Earlier, in 1907, Mountain House, the former mansion of Col. and Mrs. Michael Murray Van Beuren on Mt. Kemble Avenue, was acquired by All Souls’ Hospital to become, first, a nurses’ residence and, later, a tuberculosis sanatorium. Mountain House was later razed when a new All Souls’ Hospital building was constructed.

Subsequent Owners of Tyvan Hill Beginning in 1944, with their two children grown and living away, John and Dorothea Castles began to sell off portions of their 115acre Tyvan Hill estate. That year they conveyed title to Sunset House and some eighteen surrounding acres to John’s sister, Frances, and her second husband, Preston Lockwood. The Lockwoods soon sold the Sunset House property and moved permanently to New York City. Around the end of World War II, Tyvan Hill and the remaining ninety-seven acres of the estate were listed for sale as one large parcel. For whatever reason, though, by 1946 John and Dorothea decided instead to subdivide the property and move to Mendham. In anticipation of their move, they retained the prominent New York auction house of Parke-Bernet Galleries to handle the sale of some of the contents of Tyvan Hill. The auction of more than 200

lots included early American and English antiques — including furniture by the noted New York cabinetmaker, Duncan Phyfe — as well as silver pieces, paintings, porcelains, china and glassware, and linens and laces. Seven years later, in 1963, they donated their ca. 1810–15 antique pianoforte to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The instrument’s beautiful satinwood and rosewood case was by Duncan Phyfe and the musical works were by the prominent New York firm of piano makers, Gibson & Davis.

The Tyvan Hill residence and about twenty surrounding acres were sold in 1946 to Douglas Bowman Weed and his wife, Dorothy Virginia Garrett. Douglas was a son of J. Spencer Weed, president of the Grand Union supermarket chain and a New Vernon resident. Douglas, a Princeton graduate, after first working at Grand Union, joined Garrett & Company, the wine business established in the 1830s by his wife’s family. He rose to become chairman of the board of the Garrett firm. In 1958, the Weeds sold Tyvan Hill to Donald Cushing McGraw Jr. and his wife, the former Anne Schuyler Williams, daughter of Mr. Mansion in May 2020

and Mrs. Ralph Schuyler Williams. Anne’s father was the head of the cigar-importing firm of Faber, Coe & Gregg. Donald McGraw Jr. was a grandson of James H. McGraw, a cofounder of the McGraw-Hill publishing company. McGraw-Hill traces its roots to 1888 when James McGraw, who had been a teacher in upstate New York, purchased the American Journal of Railway Appliances. He continued to acquire other publications, eventually establishing the McGraw Publishing Company in 1899. Separately, John A. Hill had produced several technical and trade publications and, in 1902, formed his own business, the Hill Publishing Company. In 1909, McGraw and Hill merged the book departments of their publishing companies to form the McGraw-Hill Book Company. In 1917, following Hill’s death, the remaining parts of the two men’s businesses were combined into the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, Inc. During his career Donald C. McGraw Jr. held many positions at McGraw-Hill, the last being group president in charge of the company’s Standard and Poor’s subsidiary and its international publications. After leaving the company, he started Nautical Quarterly and purchased Soundings Publications. Around 1960 the McGraws built the extant brick pool house at Tyvan Hill on the site of what had originally been John and Dorothea Castles’ flower garden. The pool house was designed by New Jersey architect James Timpson, who had been trained at Yale and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, in Michigan, where he studied under Eliel Saarinen. Timpson developed what became a signature style of French country house, which typically incorporated steep rooflines and pronounced chimneys. Timpson designed houses for such

prominent New Jersey residents as former Governor Thomas H. Kean and former Treasury Secretary William E. Simon. Anne and Donald McGraw and their four sons lived at Tyvan Hill until 1972, when they sold the property to Sol and Dorothea Levine. Sol Levine had a long career at Revlon Inc., last serving as its president. The Levine family sold Tyvan Hill in 2019 to its present owner.

Glynden In 1946, just months after selling the Tyvan Hill home to Douglas and Dorothy Weed, the Castles’ sold their stable, garage, and chauffeur’s cottage at the foot of the hill to former United States district court judge Thomas Glynn Walker and his wife, the former Elizabeth Fissell. Walker, who had previously served as a member and speaker of the New Jersey Assembly and had held two New Jersey state judgeships, had resigned his federal judgeship at the end of 1941 when he was named vice president and general counsel of New Jersey Bell Telephone Company. The Walkers retained Washington, D.C., architect William M. Smith to convert what had been the Castles’ six-stall stable, six-car garage, and three-bedroom chauffeur’s cottage into a gracious country residence they called Glynden, a variant on Mr. Walker’s middle name. The Walker family sold Glynden in 2003. The Castles’ former stable, garage, and chauffeur’s cottage was converted in the late 1940s into this gracious country house by former federal judge Thomas Glynn Walker and his wife, the former Elizabeth Fissell. The Walkers named it Glynden, a variant on Mr. Walker’s middle name. The Walker family sold the property in 2003.

he great structural bones of this room, highlighted by vaulted ceilings and brick and stone walls, were all used to transform this space into a warm, inviting gathering spot. Donned with leather planked floors, added ceiling beams, and both luxurious fabrics and finishes, the room lends itself to create a rich environment that is relaxing and visually enticing. The room features leather and rattan lounge chairs with their organic modern aesthetic, while the trompe l’oeil velvet curtains and bookcase add to a sense of drama that will draw the guest in to linger over a glass of bourbon — neat or on the rocks. Ultimately, The Angel’s Share is designed for guests to unwind with friends or escape from the daily hustle and bustle. he Foyer, or anteroom, is typically a larger home’s formal connection to the outside world. It is the room where visitors are received, where packages are left, where coats are hung and where shoes are removed. Here, our goal is to create a seamless transition from life’s daily grind to a loving, tranquil, home environment. This is accomplished by using simple furnishings and neutral colors, thus capturing a sophisticated look. In this case, we

Emergence: Homage to Spring

his space revels in the joy of renewal. Five sculptures from renowned artist Jean Kawecki line the perimeter. These works evoke the feelings of hope and desire. One large and several smaller paintings by master landscape painter Jonathan Talbot express the bucolic nature of a rural setting. An abstract bronze sculpture by famous New York City artist Bill Barrett is a juxtaposition to the pastoral paintings. he walls will glisten with multiple layers of white lacquer, which is “tufted” back to create a hand-rubbed glowing surface. It’s a luxurious surface that is unmatched by other materials in its waxy, glassy surface; rarely seen and possibly never used as a mural substrate. Drawn to the cerebral quality of grisaille — for its decorative intent of using tones of gray to produce a three-dimensional effect — Judith Luke chose graphite as her medium. Graphite has many qualities: it glistens, it can be powdery soft or extremely hard. Primarily a draughtsman’s medium, it is bold to use across a large expanse. Color introduction comes in the form of fibers,

which wrap the spindles, for a “twist” on the conventional stair runner, all executed by textile artist Jillian Zoltner Wolf. Keen interest in light reflection was paid in designing a sconce of steel and glass. The sconce was manufactured by Jimm Carroll and Lisa Lofdahl. A single pendant by PELLE Designs extends the branches of the trees. Wanderer’s Hideaway

he owner of Tyvan Hill is a traveler and an explorer. She travels the world for work and pleasure, bringing back inspiration and memories. The Wanderer’s Hideaway is inspired by her exotic travels. A glamping trip to Morocco inspires the tent, a luxurious getaway in the middle of the desert, echoing the music of local tribes heard at night in front of a blazing fire. The ceiling mural is reminiscent of European church ceilings adorned with visual stories. Trips to Asia inspire the parasol installation in the powder room, and the wallpaper and green wall evoke the memory of a trip to the Amazonian rain forest in the heart of Peru. Each piece in this space is bespoke and has a story to tell. After a long trip, our wanderer comes home to retire to her hideaway and reflects upon her experiences while planning a new adventure. n our first visit to Tyvan Hill, we both fell in love with the beautiful chinoiserie wallpaper that was peeling off of the dining room walls. It was not unusual for houses of this age to have hand-painted wallpapers that depicted the exotic East. The fluently painted trees and leaves, flowers and birds were always appealing, and itâ€™s easy to see why Chinese wallpaper became an integral part of high-end western design. Our space is a study in chinoiserie, and we hand painted every detail. We hope you will join us in appreciating chinoiserie and its many contradictions. It is both fashionable 92 Mansion in May 2020

The Breakfast Room

reakfast: They say it’s the most important meal of the day. Dorothea loves to garden and loves to grow herbs. How nice it is to start the day in this cheerful room surrounded by the fruits of your labor. Dorothea brings flowers in daily and makes beautiful arrangements for both the breakfast room and other rooms throughout the house. She grows herbs and uses them fresh when able and dried in the winter. She loves her herbs so much that she has become known as the herb lady, using techniques for preserving everything so that soups and stews in fall and winter are as flavorful as the lighter and freshly picked greens in spring. The room is painted a lovely olive green, bringing the outside in. The surround of the fireplace is a salmon-colored stone. Dorothea loves the “clashing” colors of green, purple and orange. The palette of the room was influenced by the fun plates and glasses purchased on one of her many travels. You’re sure to be inspired. The Keeping Room

he Keeping Room is the perfect location for the homeownerâ€™s collection of china, silver and glassware, stored for special occasions. Inspired by the tile roof of Tyvan Hill, we used tile with a decidedly upbeat twist to frame the cabinetry and the window. Custom cabinetry with elliptical glass doors reveals an abundance of storage against a deeply toned interior. The exterior is soft and bright, drawing the eye to what is stored within. Spacious drawers below contain special silver, dishware and linen storage. Completing the base are tray

cabinets and storage under the sink. Wood countertops under the wall cabinets accentuate the leathered Carrara marble at the sink. Large scale cabinet hardware adorns the unassuming drawer heads and adds a metal element to the mix. The Kitchen at Tyvan Hill

he kitchen at Tyvan Hill is a true transformation. What was once a dark, narrow room with two walk-in closets is now an open space with a large island covered in a beautiful walnut waterfall top, perfect for today’s family. The new kitchen has plenty of room for high-end Dacor appliances, including a custom-colored range! Moving away from the all-white kitchens of the past few years, we focused on the 2020 trend toward bold colors, using navy and teal with pale blue/gray as an accent. The now-exposed windows let light into the room, awakening the depths of the beautiful stone and wood countertops, bouncing off the soft, metal accents in the appliance panels and pendant lighting. Wispy, silver metal complements the graceful curves of the decorative glass doors. Don’t forget to open the cabinets to see all the goodies inside. To put the whole room over the top, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to have a stocked wine bar! Remember, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere ... Bell Tower Childrenâ€™s Woodland Hideaway

he world is so hectic. Kids have a million activities and spend countless hours online. It is important that they have some down time to read or just daydream. This stair hall is inspired by the natural beauty surrounding Tyvan Hill. Northern New Jersey has a diversity of woodland animals and wonderful forests to escape the accelerated pace of modern life. Climbing these stairs, a child can spot numerous animals from the region, imagine making friends with these creatures, and learn how they live. The bell tower niche is the perfect spot to cozy up with a book or rest and let oneâ€™s mind wander. 98 Mansion in May 2020

We are all aware of the need for nature conservation. My hope is that visitors who pass through this space will pause to reflect and enjoy. The walls are all hand-painted in an old-fashioned storybook style, reminiscent of the golden age of illustration around the time Tyvan Hill was constructed. Endangered Wild Animals

s a young artist, I was mesmerized by Rousseauâ€™s primitive and naive representation of animals and nature. After painting botanicals and floral still lifes for many years, I found animals, monkeys in particular, to be fascinating subjects. When I realized that many lemurs and gibbons were endangered by deforestation and palm oil plantations, I decided to focus on them. Girl’s Garden Bedroom

he Girl’s Garden Bedroom is inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic story The Secret Garden. Tucked into the coziest corner of stately Tyvan Hill, this former maid’s quarters has been reimagined as a charming haven for a young lady who spends her hours reading, painting and dreaming of her daily adventures in the gardens surrounding this estate. The climbing “Bird & Thistle” paper by Brunschwig & Fils sets the scene and gives the room a feeling of whimsy and mystery. Natural elements — such as the woven Roman shades, wood-beaded mirror and raffia-wrapped nightstands — echo the sentiment of bringing the outdoors in and are the

perfect foil for the crisp Matouk bed linens, glossy blue dresser and cushy Stark Carpet area rug. his upstairs room at Tyvan Hill is the perfect corner for a study for the lady of the house. It’s a place removed from the busy fray of the household where she can retreat to read, answer emails, write thank-you notes and pore over the latest garden catalogs next to a cozy crackling fire, surrounded by her favorite books, noteworthy botanical paintings and objects she has collected on her travels. The sophisticated and feminine color palette reflects her natural elegance. The English wall coverings, fabrics and trims are refined yet not at all formal. Hanging above the table is her cherished John Phillip Osborne painting depicting a local significant historical scene. As a bred and born New Jersey girl, she appreciates the notable history the area played during the Revolutionary War. Old mixes with newly acquired fresh and whimsical pieces, a layered collection that makes a room such as this personal and treasured. Spring Awakening

e wanted to “make an entrance” with our long hallway leading into the master bedroom — it’s a preview of what’s to come. The translucent sage glazed walls and ceiling are the perfect introduction to the palette of the master bedroom. We created a point of interest within the wall of closets by installing a built-in coffee bar. This stately room has numerous focal points, from the fireplace to the bay windows that overlook the gardens to the poster bed with romantic drapery panels. However, it’s the fauxpainted architectural trellis design on the ceiling that commands attention. It beckons visitors to look up, allowing your eyes to travel throughout the space and take in the room’s details. We selected traditional furniture that one would expect in a grand country home such as Tyvan Hill. The painted finishes and refreshed upholstery in transitional lush fabrics add interest. A soft palette of ivory, sage, sand and pale blue is serene, elegant and romantically youthful. Woman’s Dressing Room

he design concept of this woman’s dressing room is REFINED GLAM. Being that the house was built in 1928, there were no great closet storage spaces so we had to incorporate some 2020 space planning for a modern-day wardrobe! We’re using trend-forward yet classic finishes of Linen, Shadow Black and Corsican Weave (a houndstooth texture) with Gold accent doors and hardware. These finishes are inspired by the external architecture of the home. We’ve added lighting and glass, as well as many functional accessories, to give the lady of the home the glamourous dressing room of her dreams. Fox Hunt at Tyvan Hill

hen I arrived to view the mansion, I fell in love with the home and knew I wanted to paint a mural of the house itself. After talking to the historian, I found out the former owners had fox hunts on the property, and I knew this had to be my theme! Because a hallway can easily be forgotten and passed by, I wanted to create a memorable experience. So I decided to turn the small foyer into a fox hole and have visitors experience what it’s like to be the fox hiding in the woods. You’ll hear the sounds of the horse’s hooves, hounds barking and the huntsman crying “Tally Ho!” Can you find the fox? As you continue down the hall you’ll pass a stone wall that represents one of the other two homes on the property, a breakfast table that would be set up before the hunt, and then you’ll see the home, Tyvan Hill, during the fox hunt. As you continue down the stairs, imagine yourself walking down to the stable. There you’ll find a horse in a stall and a copy of an original bridle path map. Gentleman’s Study and Lounge

his decidedly masculine space is meant for after hours, whether it be a nightcap, a rousing game of backgammon or perhaps a good night’s rest after a raucous soirée. The asymmetry of the room and angled walls make it ideal for these multiple functions. The Art Deco mahogany and polished nickel bar cart creates the perfect spot for the aforementioned cocktail. This wall is anchored with a large abstract painting that gives the room a distinctively modern flair. Opposite this wall, one finds a magnificent standing lacquered backgammon table. Adding to the contemporary feeling is a reinvented pair of classic wingback chairs; their austere construction of cerused pine belies their comfort. The central part of the room is anchored by a pair of

inviting chocolate brown velvet chaises. The genius lies in that their bases are actually twin mattresses that can accommodate overnight guests. Flame-stitched swivel chairs flank the fireplace for even cozier moments. One mustn’t forget that in addition to the fire, the mood is always heightened with a bit of music. Because “vinyl is back,” a modern turntable with wireless speakers has been placed to the left of the fireplace to enhance how anyone might enjoy this space. The Gentlemen’s Privy

isual balance and symmetry are my main goals in designing any space. This bathroom design at Tyvan Hill is no exception. The name Gentlemen’s Privy comes from the noun meaning “private place.” I wanted to hold true to the original use of the space, and the clues from the mansion point to this space being the gentleman’s bathroom. Most importantly I am pulling inspiration from the stunning acreage just outside the windows. There are wood cabinets, quartz countertops, green walls, polished nickel metal and matte black accents, all working together to create a harmonious whole. I wanted the space to reference the building’s history, while also maintaining a sense of modern flair. Typically, bathrooms, without the right treatment, can be cold and stark spaces. The warmth of the beautiful walnut and jewel tones counteract this. The pewter emerald colors are confident and help create a cozy feeling. The paler whites help keep the room light and open. fter Hours” is a fantastic bar nook in this special home, a small space with huge personality. With blue lacquered cabinetry, brass shelving and all necessary barware, this is a hosting necessity and fanciful retreat. The walls feature a stunning watercolor tiger wallpaper that’s sure to catch everyone’s eye from the hallway and draw guests in. Take a seat and catch up with a friend on the plush sofa, read a book next to the fireplace in a wingback chair or take an afternoon nap beneath walls adorned in exquisite, hand-painted Gracie wallpaper. ienvenidos — Welcome to CWI.DESIGN’s interpretation of a library as we imagine it would be in Ernest Hemingway’s home he called Lookout Farm (Finca Vigia), which was outside of Havana, Cuba. Have a seat at the bar and sip a Mojito, his favorite Cuban cocktail. Sit in the grouped sectional and smoke a Cohiba cigar. Peruse the books, which include The Old Man and the Sea, a Pulitzer Prize winner he wrote at Lookout Farm. Enjoy our creativity that was inspired by Hemingway’s creativity.

Far Niente Pavilion

he Far Niente Pavilion is an outdoor space encompassing living, dining and kitchen areas. The phrase “far niente” refers to the Italian art of doing nothing, when life has a slow, languid pace. On a beautiful day, where better to experience far niente than in this open-air pavilion with its gorgeous country view and inviting pool. Our design is inspired by the town of Lerici, one of several seaside towns perched on the cliffs overlooking the Gulf of La Spezia on the Italian Riviera. Designed in a relaxed, chic summerhouse style with a mix of contemporary and traditional, the space incorporates four key design elements: an open floor plan with an inside/outside flow to the pool and outside seating area; simple, clean comfortable furniture; fabrics

and finishes that can withstand the elements; and a fully functional kitchen. A classic palette of striking black and white is accented with the sun-washed colors of the Mediterranean: coral, blue, yellow, orange and green. Relax & Enjoy! ntering Tyvan Hill, the visitor is greeted by stately brick columns, topped with limestone finials, reminiscent of the historic materials and columns found in the original manor house garden walls. The grand entry is softened by a profusion of native plantings, including viburnum and redbud, marrying the newly clad columns to the landscape. The wood gate is a modern re-creation of a classic period entry feature. Painted in a traditional dark green, it invites visitors to look beyond the gates and up the driveway with anticipation of the beauty awaiting them. ‘S

easons of Renewal” represents everlasting change through the years, where each “planting quadrant” captures a different time of the year, embodied by the colors we see each season. Spring is rebirth, shown with pastel colors; summer is joyous and bold, shown with bright colors; fall brings change, also bright but with splashes of orange; lastly, winter, which invites quietness and contemplation, is shown with whites and lavenders. The continual transformation is sustained through nature itself, represented by the water flowing out of our stone fountain and onto the ground beneath, allowing for growth and

nourishment and then washing it all away again. Our design also pays homage to the square, a shape that signifies balance, order and simplicity. Each planting quadrant is a perfect square, as is our fountain at the center of the design. The only difference is that our fountain, turned 90 degrees, points generally toward the four cardinal directions (N,S,E,W). Illuminated Courtyard ... A Dramatic Entrance

yvan Hill is an especially exciting project for us because, like many of our clients’ homes in New Vernon and Harding Township, it is delightfully relaxed during the day. But as darkness falls, illumination brings more formality to the landscape, allowing it to shine with the elegance of a tuxedo. As you wind around the last bend of the driveway, you pass through two columns topped with eagles that invite you into an impressive courtyard. In the evening, this entire scene is painted with light that envelops you with welcoming warmth and guides you safely, beautifully and directly to the front door. Illuminating this unusual courtyard was both rewarding and challenging. The texture of stone loves the play of light, but controlling color temperature is critical. Because the house is asymmetrical — even the island of birches is off-center — creating visual balance with light was key. nspired by the thought-provoking sculpture Gabriella, on display from Broadfoot & Broadfoot, this space is meant to provide our guests with a respite from the hustle of the mansion and the crowd. An escape in plain sight, it’s nestled in the corner of the main entrance area. We’ve carved out a courtyard around the sculpture and laid full-range thermal bluestone in a dry setting. Our teak benches with comfortable cushions provide a place to rest, admire Gabriella and observe the comings and goings of the mansion guests. We’ve combined the two adjoining landscape spaces into one cohesive patio and landscape layout to accent the architecture of the building with a simple foundation planting tied into our formal planting layout around the bluestone patio. very house needs a welcoming outdoor area for cooking, dining and entertaining. Tyvan Hill offers the logical spaces for these important rooms in the privacy found at the back of the residence. The “Farm to Table” dining concept has redefined the way we shop for and consume food. There is also rising interest in growing food at home and even owning chickens or livestock. As we all share a growing concern about climate change and stewardship of the land, it makes sense to find these trends coinciding. As more organic, homegrown meals become part of everyday life, everything old becomes new again. Here, we offer a luxurious interpretation of these trending choices: an enclosed, deer-proof kitchen garden with raised beds, followed by a chicken coop and a fully outfitted modular cooking island. A central dining area dominates the 132 Mansion in May 2020

mid-portion of the space then progresses to a spacious lounge area with comfy deep seating for after-dining relaxation or to terrace club seating adjacent a cozy fire bowl. Simple lawn panels and plantings add color and texture. The lower patio and walkways have wide borders and ribbons of granite, with interior portions of compacted stone screenings. A Tulip Garden Reimagined

riginally designed in 1929 for bulbs and cutting flowers, Square Acre Studio and Leaf + Line have reimagined the historic tulip garden into a profusion of seasonal color. Planted in broad stripes, the nine varieties of tulips recall the tulip fields of The Netherlands. An abundance of blooms appears in early May and continues through the month. The selected palette of colors begins with a bright and cheerful mix of pinks, unfolding into a complement of yellows and finally into a deep palette of rich purples. The footprint of the raised planter boxes aligns

closely with the original dimensions and location of the historic bulb garden, which was never installed. Slicing through the broad stripes of tulips, exceptional end-grain bluestone gives the garden a delicate textural balance. e chose our site because of the beauty of the stone wall and the breathtaking views from the site that evoke a sense of peace and unanimity. Rooted in the French garden tradition of straight lines and strong shapes, the use of hedges, stone and other natural elements set stage for the fresh, invigorating colors of spring. Combining French formality with a modern open design unifies the French Norman style of the mansion with the garden space. The existing stone wall serves as the perfect backdrop for the vibrant colors of a flower bed brimming full of spring bulbs as well as seasonal annuals and perennials. Six-foot evergreen hedge walls punctuate the space and guide the viewer into the garden. Stone paths and statuary provide focal points. Seating invites guests to relax and take in the view. Jardin à la Française is a style of garden based on symmetry and the principle of imposing order in nature.
