MANSFIELD PARKS & RECREATION
FALL 2021 UPDATE Park Development News Walnut Creek Linear Trail Expansion Construction began in February on WCLT Phase 3A, which will extend the existing trail for an additional mile from James McKnight Park East around and through the Shops at Broad, connecting with existing sidewalks at Cannon and Carlin Roads. Expected completion late Summer 2021
McClendon Parks McClendon Parks East and West are both getting fun upgrades! We are currently in the design phase and working with planners to determine the layout and amenities. Stay tuned for concepts and more information as available. Expected completion Summer 2022
Skinner Sports Complex Improvements to Skinner Sports Complex parking lots and roadway began in June 2021 to get you in and out of games faster and easier. The work includes updates and realignments to the entryway, expanded parking lots and fresh asphalt throughout. This is a partnership with Tarrant County for a significant cost savings to the City. Expected completion late Summer 2022
Future Recreation Center and Library In spring 2021, City Council approved a feasibility study to begin preparing for a new recreation center and library facility, which was the top priority out of our 2020 Master Plan. A committee of residents, staff and industry experts has been meeting since June to determine what elements should be included, such as fitness equipment, aquatics, and more, and begin mapping out an overall style. Staff spent the summer collecting public feedback in meetings, webinars, emails and an online survey, ensuring that the plans they make reflect what residents really want. The study will determine a scope, conceptual images, cost estimates and proposed timeline for the facility and should be completed by Fall 2021. At this time, there is no timeline for the project construction, which is pending approval of a future bond election that would fund the costs. Stay tuned for more information. 3 FALL 2021
Katherine Rose Memorial Park Katherine Rose Memorial Park has been a community favorite for 25 years, and upgrades were the number one priority in the southwest quadrant in the 2020 Master Plan. City Council allocated funding in May 2021 to bring some exciting changes. Based on feedback from the community, the renovation will include a new destination playground, optimized for all abilities and unlike any other park in Mansfield that will be a source of pride for residents and attract visitors from around the area. Expected completion Summer 2022
Gertie Barrett Park Gertie Barrett Park will be a new neighborhood park to serve the northwest quadrant of Mansfield, an area identified in our 2020 master plan as moderate to highest need of park space. The property, located off Gertie Barrett Road near Business 287 and Garretson Lane, was purchased years ago to serve as future parkland. In May 2021, Mansfield City Council allocated funding to develop the park and bring residents much-needed space and amenities. The park design will include a playground, parking lot, splash pad, walking trail and open natural spaces. Expected completion Summer 2022
Veterans Memorial at Julian Feild Park Julian Feild Park is the oldest park in Mansfield, built in 1960 and named after one of our city’s founders. With that historic significance, the park was selected as the location for a future Veterans Memorial. The project began with residents who formed a nonprofit organization to raise the funds for permanent recognition of local veterans. In 2021, the City joined forces with the volunteers to help oversee the project and funding, which will most likely come from a future bond election. Currently, all parties are working with a designer to develop concepts. Once ready, we will have opportunities for the public to give feedback before final plans are completed. This project is still in the early planning stages and does not yet have a timeline or funding; stay tuned for updates!

MANSFIELD PARKS & RECREATION
MASTER PLAN The 2020 Parks and Recreation Master Plan was adopted in October 2020 by Mansfield Park Facilities Development Corporation and Mansfield City Council. As we approach the first anniversary of the plan, we’re checking in for an update on our progress so far. Resident feedback and engagement was crucial to developing a truly effective and impactful plan that reflects the community, and we’re committed to keeping that feedback loop open so that you can stay involved in the entire process and hold us accountable for our commitments. The Master Plan outlined four focus areas that were in the highest need of attention: playgrounds, recreation & aquatics, trails and athletic fields. It also identified five overarching goals for all department projects and initiatives:
stage of implementation or action within the department. That includes actions like improving user experience and comfort levels by adding Wi-Fi to nine parks, updating the Parkland Dedication Ordinance to improve funding and balance geographic equity, and finding new technologies or updated practices to streamline service and maintenance, like Green City GIS, a software system recently adopted to track asset inventory and condition. As of August 1, we have six development projects in progress, one of which will be completed by the end of summer. That represents 12% of the total list while only 8% through the ten year period covered by the plan. Those include the Future Recreation Center and Library, which was the top priority of the entire master plan based on both public feedback and gaps in service standards. Also in progress:
• Increase access to parks & programs
• Gertie Barrett Park
• Develop, maintain & innovate
• Katherine Rose Memorial Park
• Improve health & wellness
• Julian Feild Park
• Preserve natural spaces
• McClendon Park East
• Cultivate community pride
• McClendon Park West
Based on these goals and focus areas, the plan included 50 park development and/or renovation projects and nearly 70 operational strategies needed to achieve the level and quality of service Mansfield residents deserve. Many of the operationional strategies represent policies, processes or priorities to be implemented, and are ongoing initiatives that will be rolled out in phases and continuously ongoing and updated. Of the 70 outlined in the plan, 58 are already in some
• Walnut Creek Linear Park Phase 3A All project updates can be found on our website, mansfieldparks. com, under the news section. Each active project has a dedicated website with relevant documents, updates and a contact form to ask direct questions about specific projects. We’re excited for the future of Mansfield parks, as outlined by YOU, the residents, in our 2020 Master Plan and look forward to watching it come to life!
Do you have a socially savvy, almost-influencer or wannabe reporter who wants to give back to the community by getting out and getting involved...and telling the world all about it? Applications are now open for our fall Parks & Recreation Brand Reps! This program is open to teens 15-18Y who live in Mansfield OR attend Mansfield ISD schools. After a brief training, the students volunteer their time to attend programs and events, capturing images, videos and stories from the community to be shared on our department social media. This is perfect for anyone interested in social media, marketing or journalism, and is an incredible way to earn service hours and give back while having fun representing your city. WELCOME BACK, SENIORS! We’re thrilled to announce the return of Senior Lifestyles at the Mansfield Activities Center! Our senior programs have been in a slow phased reopening plan since closures due to COVID-19 and are finally close to resuming the full schedule. Many services began over the summer with limited hours and restrictions on food and bus services. We appreciate your patience as we’ve worked to create a new normal that has allowed our programs to resume but with new precautions in place to keep everyone safe. Please check our website or call the MAC (817) 728-3680 for the most current status of the Senior Lifestyles programs. We expect to continue adding days and options as the weeks progress, but expect to make continuous adjustments as we go. Our staff has worked extremely hard to make this possible and we cannot wait to see our favorite faces back at the MAC again soon.
