Mansfield College An open, progressive academic community within the world’s leading University. Mansfield is the college at Oxford best known for being open, progressive and inclusive. Our Principal is Helen Mountfield QC, a barrister and legal scholar specialising in human rights. Since its founding in the 1880s, Mansfield has prided itself on offering previously excluded constituencies access to an Oxford education at no compromise to excellence. Our community is now the most diverse of all of the Oxford colleges, with the vast majority of our undergraduates coming to us from state-funded schools, the highest proportion of students identifying as BAME of any Oxford college, and a high percentage of our students being the first in their families to go to University. Mansfield is also academically strong. In 2019, an outstanding number of Firsts placed Mansfield fifth of the 39 Colleges in the Norrington Table – Oxford University’s ranking system for its annual academic results. We are proud to be the home of the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, as the Institute is a perfect reflection of the spirit of the College: plural, tolerant, broadminded, and respectful of the dignity and worth of everyone who crosses our threshold. This 6 week programme lets you enjoy Oxford’s famous ‘tutorial’ system of intense academic conversation around a subject, to attain your postgraduate or professional goals. Oxford tutorials offer a highly personalised, bespoke way of working, that allow you to explore your own academic and professional interests. Tutorials also offer the chance to make enduring connections with tutors who can provide guidance/references in the future. All students receive an official, written course evaluation from their Oxford tutors that they can share with recommenders at their home institution. These courses are for undergraduate students looking to use this exceptional lock-down summer to explore intellectually, find life-long interests, and think about their options for major courses of study; for graduate work or professional careers after graduation. Oxford tutors will meet you twice a week for online tutorials, in areas of study selected by you, which could include subjects you might be considering for graduate work or professional training. We estimate the workload to be approximately 30 hours per week. This course will introduce you to the skills required at graduate level: longer research pieces, report-writing, debating and presenting with confidence.

Law Programmes offered in Legal thinking skills, Public International Law and Human Rights. Mansfield College is internationally renowned for its legal scholarship. Our Principal, Helen Mountfield QC, is a well-known human rights advocate at Matrix Chambers, and Mansfield is the home of the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights , whose Director, Professor Kate O’Regan, was a judge of the South African Constitutional Court.
Politics, Philosophy & Economics (PPE) One of the most well-known courses at Oxford University, Politics, Philosophy & Economics offers the chance to take courses from different subjects of study that complement each other and are of relevance to anyone interested in the way we live now. PPE is a great preparation for a range of graduate courses or professional training worldwide (in business, government, politics, not-for-profit organisations and beyond).
English Literature If you love to read challenging literature, or are interested in taking an English literature graduate course, this gives you an invaluable grounding in authors and literary movements, from Shakespeare to the Romantics, from Modernism to Poststructuralism, in the University where many of the world’s great authors were educated.
History The course gives you the chance to hone your skills for a specialist history Major, for graduate-level history, or just for intellectual enjoyment - with access to periods or themes you haven’t studied before and to primary sources from different times and places. We have particular strengths in British & European history.

Welcome and introduction from course leader. Distribution of course reading 2x 1 hour personal tutorials - intensive personal seminars - with tutor and 1 other student. In advance of the meeting tutor will email work and set a written or verbal report, to form the basis of the tutorial discussion. Tutor will discuss ideas and the structure of the written report in advance. Students can collaborate online. All reading material will be sent via email.

Research paper submitted and marked. This will be the subject of critical appraisal in tutorials.

Final Piece due. This will be subject-specific, but could help with preparation for a senior thesis.

Criteria Oxford is a world-leading academic institution and as such we recruit the highest calibre students. Our standard offer is for those with a GPA of 3.7 or above (for US based students; equivalent level recommendation for others). However, if there are reasons why you have not (yet) achieved that standard, such as the combination of courses you have taken or adverse circumstances, please let us know as these can be taken into account.
Credits 30 hours work and 2 tutorials per week. 12 tutorial credits, which is the equivalent of 20 credits in the European Credit Transfer Scheme and 2 American course credits (all credit transfers to be agreed with your home institution).
Transcripts All students who successfully complete the course will receive an official transcript from Mansfield College, University of Oxford. They also receive an official, written course evaluation from their tutors that they can share with their recommenders at their home institution.
Fees The fee for the 6 week course is $6,000. This includes all materials, tutorials and written feedback. A non-refundable deposit of $600 will be payable once you receive an offer of a place. The balance of $5,400 will then be due by 15 June 2020.
