NEWS
FROM OUR FORMATION HOUSES! NEWS FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PROVINCIAL PREFECT OF STUDIES June and July might have been busy months for the formators to begin the academic year 2018. This context prompts us to make a special focus on formation in this 2nd edition of the Messenger. So in this edition we include the photos of our formation communities of the year 2018-2019 in order to introduce them to the members of our Province.By these initiatives we also intend to make our formation a common concern and interest. Besides this, we want the Province acknowledge the sacrifices of our formators who engage in a demanding service for the Province and for the Church. It’s a need because our constitution (18) says, “A genuinely Carmelite formation of its members is a paramount importance for the vitality and future of the Order.” Once upon a time Messenger had been a major task of the theology students. Now it’s done by the Province. However we want to ensure the contribution of our formees at all levels of formation in the publishing of the Messenger. By this we wish to make use of Messenger also as an opportunity for the Formees to develop their writing skills. So we request the formators to assign students also as correspondents of Messenger in order to send news pertained to the formation as well as a varity of literary items and photos of special events of

MISSION
VISION
“The mission of our formation is to immerse our Formees in the experience of God and to help them perfect it gradually in their lives led by the Holy Spirit, enabling them to serve the Church as Holy and Learned Religious through a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ and through an integrated formation at contemplative, missionary, intellectual, communitarian, and human levels, rooted in the Teresian Charism of the Order of the Discalced Carmelites, OCD.”
‘Towards a formation of Teresian Carmelite Religious and Priests!’ academic life. In fact, student reporting is an effective method for developing creative writing. Please provide your suggestions to make this section fruitful.
A NEW VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT FOR OUR FORMATION ! We have desined a new vision and mission statement of our Teresian Carmelite Formation. A vision and mission statement remind us constantly about the values, purpose, and orientation of our formation, and the way of conducting it. It generates reflection, discussion, and consistency. We encourage formators to motivate the formees to reflect on it and make it visible so that all from inside and outside the community may be reminded on a daily basis of our identity and life style.
SEMINAR ON ONGOING FORMATION! A one day seminar on ‘Ongoing Formation’ was held on 30th June 2018 at Nirjhari, Carmelaram, from 09.00 am to 04.30 pm. There were 23 participants for the meeting. Rev. Fr. Sebastian Koodappattu OCD, the Provincial, welcomed the gathering and introduced the seminar. Rev. Fr. Mathew Vekathanam OCD enlightened the participants by his talk on the theme of ongoing formation which served as the input for the group and panel discussions. Rev. Fr. Peter Chakiath OCD was the facilitator and moderator of the group and the panel discussions which followed the talk. Detailed points for discussion were already prepared by Rev. Fr. Mathew Choorapanthiyil OCD, the Provincial Councillor in Charge of Formation and Provincial Prefect of Studies. In three groups the participants discussed about various aspects of ongoing formation and presented their finding in the large group. Group discussions were followed by panel discussion in which participants reiterated the findings of the groups and made many practical suggestions to the Provincial Council. Thanks to our participants for their active participation! It was an excellent opportunity for renewing our understating of the ongoing formation and to make a critical analysis of the present practice towards making it more strategic and efficient for the future of the Province. We encourage all the friars to read the position paper presented by Rev. Mathew Vekathanam which is really scholarly and timely. 12 I JULY 2018

Release of Books for Formation
‘THE POTTER’ NOT PORTER!
A new handbook for formation On 30th June 2018, we have released a handbook for formation. This handbook based its content upon our constitution, Rule, Ratio, formation practices, and certain selected teachings of the Church. The primary objective of this handbook is to provide a reader friendly reference book capable of being conveniently carried out as a ready and concise reference covering particulars of Teresa in Carmelite formation. By this we want to assist our young formators who are assigned for a serious responsibility without much training and guidance. Besides this it’s also our humble effort to transmitting the identify and practice of our Teresian Carmelite formation to the next generation. It consists of four parts. The first part is a brief description of the vision, sources and origin of formation houses
in the Malabar province. The Second part presents various stages of formation and their objectives, curriculum, and practices. The third part on resources illustrates the constitutional features of our formation and certain binding directives and teachings of the Church on it. The fourth part presents the profiles of our resource persons and their contributions to the province and to the Church. This hand book presents most of the information in short-note format in order to facilitate fast and easy reading and understanding. Being a collection of various information on formation from authorized documents, this handbook does not err with the subject matter. however there can be short comings with the use of language. It is published on an experiment basis at a short span. Therefore, we request all, especially the formators to give feedback for the sake of improving it .Moreover it needs to be renewed periodically in accordance with the new teachings of the Order and of the church. We acknowledge with gratitude the contribution and guidance of Fr. Patric Mootheril OCD and the collaboration all our fathers in developing this handbook. It’s of great satisfaction to know that some of our formators found ‘the Potter’ helpful in their formation. Thank you very much dear fathers for your appreciation!. We also thank Fr. Antony Attuthundiyil OCD who took care of its distribution. Please let us know in case you have not received copies of the Potter for the community and for students.
Personal Data Book in Three Volumes We have officially promulgated a personal data book in three volumes on 30th June 2018 for private use in our Province. Now on we use these books for the collection of the biodata of all the members of the province and for the evaluation of our candidates. The first part is for evaluation of the candidates from vocation promotion to pre-novitiate, second part from novitiate to ordination and the third part is for the collection of the biodata of the professed members of our Province. It’s appropriate to read the guidelines before using these books. By introducing these new personal data books with its modified system of evaluation we intend to facilitate 13 I JULY 2018
documentation, systematization, consistency, and continuity in the evaluation of the candidates. This is a sincere response to the frequent reminders of the church about the importance of systematic evaluation of the students in formation to assist them in their discernment. The formators need to meet students periodically for spiritual direction and for guidance though they record only the yearend report of
evaluation in the personal data book. I humbly request all the Directors, Masters, and Superiors of the Regents to use this book for evaluation of the candidates from this year 2018 onwards and to pas the completed personal data book to the Formator of the subsequent stage of formation. We request the help of our professed members to complete the 3rd volume for our Archives.
A NEW OFFICE FOR THE PREFECT OF STUDIES! We have initiated a new office for Prefect of Studies in Room no. 104 in the Provincial House in Trivandrum. We are in the process of furnishing it with essential documents and records. However its furnishing depends on the generous cooperation of all our Directors, Masters, Formators, and Prefect of Studies. Now you may approach the office of the Prefect of studies for books ‘The Potter’ and the Personal data book for students’ evaluation. For this purpose, please contact the Provincial Secretory. It is also appropriate that we furnish offices in all our formation houses with appropriate documents in order to maintain systematization and consistency in formation.
Bro. Albin A.S. 2nd year Postulant, Cherupushpa Ashram
After the model of Elijha and Mary The Carmelite order has gone through centuries of growth to reach up to the flowering age of today. For almost eight hundred years Carmelite spirituality has been a vital way of following Jesus. This spirituality which originated with hermits on Mount Carmel placed a special emphasis on silence, mortification and prayer. Carmelites live a life fully referring to the living God as Elijah lived. Carmel receives its contemplative lifestyle from its first herimits who were very much biblical figures. In
the first century, devotion to Mary was crystalized around the vision of Mary to Simon stock accorded in the 15th century. This is based on a legend that Mary presented him salvation for those who die wearing brown scapular. Scapular becomes a sign of dedication to Mary and symbol of affiliation with the Carmelite order. The wearing of the scapular became widespread in the 19th and 20th century and it still practiced by all religous and faithful.

of our Blessed mother of Carmel and Queen. We won’t forget the sweet memories of those sleepless nights. The alluring decorations of our altar fascinated the minds of many. We could see, many were taking photographs of our church. The mesmerizing illuminations gave a celestial feeling for many.
Those Feast Days were really wonderful. It carries a celestial touch too. I had been hearing about the festal celebrations of our monastery. But it was for the first time I could participate in it. Really it was exhilarating. Three sleepless days! But in fact, it never disturbed us. We worked together for the feast
This feast was something special to me also. Because, I could go with the statue of blessed Mother Mary. Wearing my habit and mantle I carried her on my shoulders! Let me say once again, the first festal celebration in Carmel Hill is a pleasant memory. I was experiencing the accompaniment of God the Almighty with us. Let us thank the Lord with one voice: Rejoice in the Lord always , And again I say, Rejoice.............
“The question that must form within us, when we go down into the potter’s workshop, is this: What priest do I want to be? A drawing-room priest, calm and orderly, or a missionary disciple whose heart burns for the Master and for the People of God? One who is lukewarm who prefers a quiet life, or a prophet who reawakens the desire for God in the heart of man?”

Br. ANTONY KOIKARA OF BL. V. MARY OCD [06-11-1945 to 15- 05-2018]
It’s almost two months now! Still We cherish the loving memmory of our Brother Antony Koikara OCD, who returned to his eternal home at the age of 73 on 15th May 2018 after a valiant battle with Cancer. His devotion to his Carmelite Order and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace. Br. Antony Koikara was born to the late Ulahannan Koikara and Rosa Ulahannan, at Kizhakkampalam, in the Diocese of Ernakulum on November 11, 1945. He is the 5th son among 2 brothers and 4 sisters. He joined the Malabar Province of the order of discalced Carmelites on November 3, 1970 at Thuckalay. His first profession was on November 4, 1971, and solemn profession on January 23, 1977. Rev. Bro. Antony Koikkara served his beloved Malabar Province as Manager to Carmel Book Stall Trivandrum, Asst. Manager to San Jose Process and as Sacristan at St. Teresa’s Monastery Ernakulum and at Carmel Hill for long time. He was a popular and passionate charismatic Retreat Preacher, healer, and pastor. To many communities of the Malabar province he was a sought after member. It was a life well lived for others. In his visible innocence, enthusiasm, and availability he radiated his holiness and commitment by being prayer and service to many. When the absence of such a man of God who ever lived a lowly life in the presence of God affects us , the words of Rabindranath Tgore comes to our consolation: “Death is not extinguishing the light; it is putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.”

MOUNT CARMEL SPIRITUALITY CENTERE Peravoor Director: Fr. Thomas Kuzhiyalil OCD
Now there are CCTV cameras in order to ensure security and to meet the legal requirements. Besides these innovations, we have designed and printed 5000 song books for the use at our center and for retreats.
During Recent years Mt. Carmel Center at Peravoor has made a significant spiritual impact in the lives of the Catholics of North Malabar region through its popular Charismatic retreats and committed administration of sacraments especially the of sacramental of reconciliation.
We are determined to give a Carmelite character to our spiritual services. With this in mind, we integrate the spirituality and teachings of our Saints by way of classes that could lead our people definitely to the depths of spiritual and faith life. Moreover, for each retreats we freely distribute our scapulars in order to keep our participants under the protection of our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
There is a significant increase in the participation of the retreats at our center since it is already known to the Catholics of the Malabar region. However we admit our limitation with space and conducive environment to accommodate all who come for our services.
Our participants in our popular retreats include fathers, sisters, seminarians, and lay people. So we are proud to serve the spiritual needs of the people of all status and lifestyles. During holidays we conduct special retreats for children and consecrated people.

Outreach Ministries:
Programms of June 2018
In tune with our growth as a popular retreat center, we conducted charismatic retreats for the past one year in almost 20 parishes of all three Rites. We are now regular to conduct retreats once in every month in our Benzigar memorial spirituality center in Trivandrum.
Different government departments such as Higher Secondary Education, Health departments and Kudumbasree made use of the center for their meetings, seminars, and courses.
Carmel Voice: As a realization of our long cherished dream, now we are going to publish for the first time a magazine from the center titled as ‘Carmel Voice’ once in three months. The first copy of the first edition of Carmel Voice will be released officially on 29 July 2018.
Using Digital Medium: In accordance with an inspiration from our Prayer ministry, we are planning to extend our ministry to the whole world for the benefit of many through the digital Medium of ‘you tube’.
Our Challenge Being surrounded by a hospital, party offices, and houses of other religions, our spiritualty center is compelled to control the sound. Therefore, we are in between two expensive options of either convert the existing center as a sound proof building or to build a new sound proof retreat center.
MPC Course Thalasseri Archdiocese makes use of our spirituality center to conduct Marriage Preparation course once in two months.

New Generator Soon we will install a new generator that could provide electricity for the incessant operation of our Alter Bread production and candle making units. Thanks to God, with this installation we could very well solve a major problem of frequent interruption with Alter bread production because of the insufficient power supply and its frequent cut. Now we hope to provide regularly alter bread to many dioceses and religious institutions.
