Our growth in Mann About Town has been exceptional and we are so proud of each of our ten covers in 2023. The stories and friends we have made with each will always remain with us. Alongside the covers, we’ve had a year of luxury features and we’ll bring you many more going into 2024.

In Arts, we are highlighting The Museum of Jewish Heritage as they have opened an exhibit called “Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark” which shows the rescue of Denmark’s Jewish population in 1943.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the events in the Middle East that are still unfolding as I write. Like everyone, I was horrified by the unconscionable terrorist attack against Israel and pray for the innocent on all sides.

I’d like to personally wish everyone a happy holiday and as you celebrate with friends and family, never take them for granted. May we have peace in 2024, and we’ll see you in January.

Kiril & Miki Mihajlov owners of The Consulate Midtown Restaurant in NYC generously sponsored the event and permitted their stunning French restaurant to be transformed into an art gallery displaying the Black & White images.

Over 120 guests were encouraged to “take their portrait off the wall” as a keepsake while enjoying wine and delicious hors d’oeuvres.

James Grosso described to the audience how their programs educate children about healthy foods, imparting culinary skills, kitchen science and food origins through diverse, intelligent and nutritious choices. Watt and her agency have been providing photography and media outreach services to the foundation for over a decade and will photograph their next gala in April 2024.

Some of New York’s most prestigious real estate professionals gathered for the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) New York Real Estate Division’s 11th Annual Golf Outing at Glen Oaks Country Club in Old Westbury, NY, where they golfed, networked and dined alongside soldiers who protect the State of Israel. Also in attendance were Mike Sweetney, former NBA player, and Emily Austin, actress, sports journalist and social media influencer.

The day-long event was hosted by Marty Burger, CEO of Silverstein Properties and Gary Phillips, managing director of Eastdil Secured, co-chairs of the FIDF Real Estate Division. The FIDF Real Estate division was created in 2006 by a group of successful business and philanthropic leaders who were passionate about uniting members of the real estate community to support the soldiers of Israel.

FIDF board member, outgoing Real Estate Division Chairman and staunch supporter, Chuck Rosenzweig of Criterion Real Estate Capital, was the event honoree and commended for his exemplary passion, devotion and generosity towards supporting the young men and women who protect the Jewish State through FIDF’s game-changing and transformative programs.

“Rosenzweig has been instrumental in building the Real Estate division into the powerhouse group it is today and we are so thankful for

his ongoing dedication,” said Pninit Cole, executive director, FIDF Affinity Groups.

“The impact of his support has been priceless in meeting critical needs of the soldiers, and in turn helping to ensure Israel’s very existence.”

interceptions when deadly missiles were headed towards Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. David’s Sling is designed to intercept enemy planes, drones, tactical ballistic missiles, medium-to-longrange-rockets and cruise missiles.

The contributions of the Real Estate division have been vast. The group participated in four missions to Israel to see first-hand how FIDF transforms the lives of IDF soldiers; raised $500k+ towards FIDF’s emergency campaign to support IDF soldiers’ critical needs during Operation Guardian of the Walls; funded numerous FIDF construction projects including sports complexes and wellbeing centers; sponsored multiple IMPACT! scholarships for former combat soldiers and provided financial support to multiple adopted battalions.

Guests also heard from Capt. Baruch, an instructor of the Supreme Naval Company Course, who shared his involvement in Operation Guardian of the Walls when his ship was called into battle on a mission to protect the Maritime border. Baruch recently participated in FIDF’s Witnesses in Uniform program that brings delegations of IDF officers to Poland to learn about the atrocities of the Holocaust, helping them to connect to their mission more deeply. Baruch shared that he was “overwhelmed with gratitude” for the FIDF’s life-changing contributions to support soldiers like himself on and off the battlefield.

Ofer Yardeni, founder and chairman of Stonehenge NYC and FIDF National Board Member led a special tribute to beloved friend and FIDF supporter Ned Dubofsky Z’L. On behalf of the Real Estate Division, Yardeni announced the building of an outdoor fitness center for the Golani brigade in Dubofsky’s memory, fusing his passion for this group of soldiers and fitness.

An event highlight was hearing from two guest soldiers who detailed their experiences in service. The first, a woman, was 2nd Lt. Megal, who commanded and executed the first successful operational use of the David’s Sling Air Defense System, carrying out two

“We are here to show the Israeli soldiers standing on the front lines right now that we have their backs, and that we will do whatever it takes to make sure they succeed on the battlefield and beyond,” said Berger.

Global Lyme Alliance (GLA), the leading nonprofit dedicated to conquering Lyme and other tick-borne diseases held their annual GLA Global Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.

The annual event raises Lyme disease awareness and funds for research to improve diagnostics and treatments and ultimately find a cure for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. This year’s gala was a night to remember for invited celebrities, business leaders and top scientists alike.

The spectacular event began with cocktails, dinner and an auction followed by a special musical performance by music icon Debbie Gibson. Master of ceremonies Rosanna Scotto, co-host of FOX 5 “Good Day New York” led the affair which in-

cluded appearances by Broadway Star Ashley Loren as well as Celebrity Ambassador Christopher Meloni.

This year, the GLA honored Kenzie Vath, a Lyme warrior, devoted wife, loving mother and dedicated hotelier, for her remarkable contributions towards raising both funds and awareness for this relentless disease. Additionally, the GLA introduced a new award for the first time in 2023, generously sponsored by philanthropists Bob and Karen Kelly, which is designed to celebrate the heroic endeavors of family members who serve as medical advocates and play an indispensable role in navigating the medical system during this battle, alongside the patients themselves.

This year’s event raised more than $1.6 million to advance GLA’s mission to conquer Lyme Disease.

The GLA Gala is among New York City’s most highly anticipated fundraising events. heir Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia hosted the annual Lifeline New York Benefit Dinner with a crowd dedicated to championing philanthropic efforts around the world.

Hundreds of guests attended the beloved affair at the world-famous Explorers Club in New York City to enjoy the cocktail and dinner event in addition to supporting this unique benefit that aids children’s hospitals in Serbia.

The event featured a performance by Gwyneth Giangrande.

Auctioneer Jack Hartnett auctioned special items including a painting donated by Fer da Silva in addition to a basketball signed by Denver Nuggets NBA star Nikola Jokic. Guests celebrated the work of the charity with a special cocktail, the “Royal Blossom,” served from Casa De Sol Tequila and red wines from BZ Consortium.

Lifeline Humanitarian Organization is an international effort founded 30 years ago in 1993 as an urgent response to the tragic humanitarian situation in the former Yugoslavia, which was afflicted by conflict and sanctions. The goal of Lifeline is to reduce and relieve the suffering of physically and mentally disabled children, orphans and the elderly as well as to improve medical facilities in the country.

UGG Launches Regenerate by Ugg Collection In taking a step toward a more regenerative world, Southern California-based global lifestyle brand UGG (a division of Deckers Brands) released Regenerate by UGG, an all-gender, sustainability-focused collection crafted with materials from land cared for with regenerative traditions.

a young man where he gained expansive Japanese cultural knowledge, Zheng and his family then migrated to the Midwest, where he grew up working in his family’s restaurants. He was educated as an engineer and tried the business world after college, but hospitality quickly drew him back. Stints at the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago hooked him on fine dining.

Chef Zheng opened his first Japanese fusion restaurant in Indiana in 2012. Hoping for a more appreciative audience for real Japanese flavors, he moved to New York in 2016 and opened Gaijin, an upscale sushi restaurant in Astoria, Queens. After the pandemic, he relaunched it as Kōyō, where he took over as Executive Chef and served his first kaiseki-inspired tasting menus.

Yakimono, in a more traditional fashion, is a grilled fish course. Japanese Amadai (tilefish) is crisped yubiki style with hot oil before it is finished on a binchotan grill, served with house-made negi shoyu (green onion and soy sauce) over baby corn. The Mushimono that follows features Dungeness crab, and nagaimo (mountain yam), layered in an egg custard that is finished with a slurry of kudzu and shaved black truffles. It’s a worldly New Yorker’s take on Chawanmushi.

Always with his heart set on opening in Manhattan, he found the perfect location in Tribeca for his latest venture, Tsubame. Named for the barn swallow that nested in his childhood village in spring, the single, minimally decorated room is occupied entirely by the 10-seat chef’s counter. Like many kappo spots in Japan, Tsubame is very serious about the food, but less formal and more interactive, with Chef Zheng doing almost all the prepping and serving himself.

n Japan, “kaiseki” refers to a traditional multicourse meal, built around the finest seasonal ingredients. Many restaurants use this terminology in New York, but very few true kaiseki masters actually exist outside of Japan. For Tsubame, Chef/Owner Jay Zheng has created a kaiseki-inspired omakase experience to honor the rich traditions, but not to claim them as his own.

CUISINE: Tsubame offers an eight-course tasting progression, following a standard kaiseki format. Varied culinary techniques and surprising combinations help bring out the natural flavors of beautiful seasonal ingredients. Combined, the array of bites produces a satisfying culinary journey that intrigues diners. Here are some descriptions of courses:

In classic kaiseki style, the menu is an ever changing series of colorful assemblages made with the finest seasonal ingredients and fish, mainly sourced from Japan. His finished dishes reference Japanese classics but also touch broadly on his own roots and influences.

Sakizuke – the amuse-bouche – launches the meal.

Chef Zheng’s Shiroebi Uni Shokupan is a big opener, housemade milk bread layered with raw baby shrimp from Toyama and vivid uni from Hokkaido, garnished with shiso flowers. Luxuriously creative, it sets a tone for the meal that follows.

Chef Zheng adds indulgent Western ingredients like caviar and truffles to the mix and displays an impressive array of techniques, but always avoids flash. In the Japanese manner, neglected by many of the omakase chefs who have popped up in NYC lately, Zheng lets the ingredients themselves shine.

Hassun, meaning “eight inches,” is a collection of small bites served on miniature dining pedestals and marks the menu as an evocation of the season establishing Chef Zheng’s range as a chef. Eaten from right to left, the dishes are: Tako, Hokkaido octopus tentacle slow braised for four hours with daikon and served with wasabi, which is pure Japanese country; Caviar Shiso Potato Pave heaps rich,

briny Ossetra caviar atop a crispy scalloped potato and garnished with citrusy sansho pepper that gives the dish a Tokyo-meets-Paris sophistication; Toro Gobo Tart combines raw bluefin tuna, crisped gobo (burdock root) and torched rakkyo (pickled onion) in a rice paper wafer.

The entrée is Gohan, a rice course served in two different sets beginning with a nigiri progression and ending with a small rice bowl. For his nigiri, the chef favors a fluffy, lightly seasoned blend of two grains of koshihikari rice. Tsubame will serve seven to eight pieces of nigiri for each seating, which may include: ten day aged Shima aji (striped jack); Kinmedai (golden eye snapper) from Chiba; Barracuda from Kamasu; lightly cured Iwashi (sardine); Aji (horse mackerel) from Oita; Toro (tuna) from Spain; and Muki Hotate (scallop) from Miyagi. The proceeding rice bowl is composed of Uni from Hokkaido and Ossetra caviar over koshihikari rice.

The experience concludes with Mizumono, two light seasonal desserts, and as it is customary to end a kaiseki meal with tea, Tsubame serves ceremonial Uji Matcha Green tea from Kyoto with seasonal fruit.

Italian Food Company Brings La Dolce Vita To The Florida Keys With Three Authentic Italian Restaurants

T

he Florida Keys is world renowned for sparkling waters, unparalleled sunsets, endless happy hours and the ubiquitous fish sandwich. Mahi or snapper, fried or blackened, along with a slice of Key lime pie and an iced cold drink; it’s the quintessential Florida Keys meal.

But man cannot live on fish alone; something that husband-and-wife team Tony and Isis Wright, owner/operators of Italian Food Company (IFC) banked on when they opened their first restaurant in Key Largo in 2021.

Now, with three successful restaurants – each with its own distinct character, style and menu – and a fourth in the pipeline for 2024, the Wrights are officially restaurateurs on the rise in one of the country’s most unique destinations.

Italian Food Company Key Largo was the first to open, a charming indoor/outdoor space with authentic Neapolitan wood-burning pizzas and soulful, homestyle Southern Italian cookery that had cars backed up for close to a mile. Italian Food Company Islamorada is a two-story trattoria-style eatery with a full bar and a larger, more elevated menu and live entertainment that turns the dining room into a dance floor most weekend evenings. Open since July 2022, a seat here in season is as prized as a record-breaking marlin. The most recent concept – Italian Food Company Express in Tavernier – opened in June 2023 and offers Roman-style pizzas, swoon-worthy sandwiches and grab-n-go delights perfect for folks heading in or out of The Keys.

Like so many business stories of the past few years, this one got its start with the pandemic. The Wrights’ other businesses were dependent on international travel and were sidelined quickly by the global crisis. The entrepreneurial Keys residents and savvy real estate investors soon found themselves wondering “What’s next?” The answer: turn one of their holdings – a former Papa John’s location on Key Largo – into an authentic Italian restaurant; something the food-obsessive couple saw lacking in The Keys. And although the Wrights had no previous restaurant experience, they quickly embraced the challenge. Both grew up in a culture of generous hospitality and the comfort of home-cooked food, with large family gatherings for holidays and the spirit of shared meals ingrained in their upbringings. Isis is from Miami, part of a Cuban-American clan, and Tony, the son of an American military veteran and Sicilian mother, is an incredible home cook with a repository of authentic recipes who quickly became part of what would become the Italian Food Company team.

In fact, every Tuesday she hand rolls meatballs for all of the restaurants; just one example of the dedication to tradition the brand embraces. Arguably the focus here is pizza, Neapolitan-style, made in the wood-burning oven overseen by pizzaiolo Leopoldo Figlioli, who seems as if he was plucked from the streets of Napoli. A casually welcoming place that has struck a chord as the perfect spot for dining with friends and family, Italian Food Company Key Largo captures the “come as you are” ethos of the Florida Keys. The must-try pizzas, meant to be enjoyed fresh from the oven piping hot, are a menu highlight with standouts including Margherita, Diavola, Quattro Formaggi and Tartufo. Dance has always been a constant in Maks Chmerkovskiy’s life from childhood until now. The professional dancer and former Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) member was born and raised in Ukraine and immigrated to the United States as a young teenager. Although being in a new country was challenging, dance was his outlet while facing financial and language barriers. Regardless of where he lived, Maks always knew that he wanted to be a dancer.

Maks never had a second thought about this career choice; doing something else never seemed like an option. “Honestly, I don’t have second thoughts,” he said. “Being immersed in a sport at such a young age shaped my goals for the future. Now, here I am. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

Each dancer on DWTS currently has their own experience, but Maks was able to go head-to-head with his brother, Val. They’ve gone through so much together as kids but naturally, there was competition as teenagers. “We have grown to be extremely mutually supportive and encourage each other every step of the way,” Maks said.

For Maks, having his brother there actually took some pressure off. “Plus, having the opportunity to work with my brother on national TV was pretty cool,” Maks said. For multiple seasons, Maks and Val were able to do something not too many people get to experience.

Throughout the 17 seasons of DWTS Maks has been on, he won the Season 18 Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy alongside dance partner Meryl Davis. After 14 tries, he said that the feeling of winning was “indescribable.” “It was an honor and a privilege, and truly meant the world to me,” Maks said. After working so hard for so many years, winning was extremely rewarding, and there is no one I would rather have had by my side than Meryl [Davis].” Maks said he would absolutely dance with her again in a heartbeat.

Although the feeling of finally winning was indescribable, DWTS isn’t a walk in the park. The stress and exhaustion eventually pile up and for Maks, the hardest part about being on the show was being more than just a dancer. “You are also a shoulder to cry on, sometimes a therapist, a mother and a father,” he explained. “You are also somebody that the stars open up to in their most vulnerable times.”

While Maks announced his DWTS departure on 2018, the atmosphere is something he misses although he’s around with his wife, Peta Murgatroyd, who also happens to be a professional DWTS dancer. “It’s important to understand when you have grown out of an atmosphere. I was a part of the show for a very long time, and I credit DWTS with much of my success.” Maks treasures the memories he made but is now focused on making memories with his family that he’ll treasure even more.

from start to finish; from the initial song selection and concept of the dance, to creating the dance moves into the rehearsal of the routine.

With each dance, the time the routine takes can vary. “There is a lot to cover,” explained Maks. “It depends on factors such as the experience and dance ability of both parties, as well as how much time can be spent rehearsing.”

Maks credits his inspiration to his family and highlights his two children as his greatest sources of that inspiration. With this, he implements discovered cultures into his choreography. Although Ukrainian-born, Latin American is a style of dance he is inspired by and loves performing.

Even though South American culture is his favorite to incorporate, he uses new cultures all the time. His favorite project was being one of the directors for the high-end show “Le Reve” at the Wynn in Las Vegas.

Outside of dance, Maks has dabbled in acting. He starred in the “Full House” spin-off series, “Fuller House.” After actress Candace Cameron Bure was on DWTS, she and Maks became friends. When a dance scene came up where sisters needed brothers for a date, Maks and Val were the obvious choice.

“Teaching a lot at dance conventions of massive sizes, my brother and I have had so many encounters where I’m on stage, with a mic in front of hundreds of kids. And they look at me not as Maks from DWTS but as the dude from ‘Fuller House!’” Maks said.

COVER FEATURE While Maks has no current acting pursuits, he enjoyed his time on the show and says he will consider an opportunity if it arises.

Maks’ mindset on his future career has changed now that being a father has become his priority.

When the war in Ukraine unfolded, Maks was filming “World of Dance: Ukraine” in Kyiv. It was a dark and heavy time for their family. “We had the time difference and the unknown to deal with, so it was pretty crazy,” Maks said. His time there was a growing moment for him and moving forward, it changed his outlook on life.

To help Ukraine, Maks and his father Val created Baranova27.

It’s a full volunteer-based initiative that collects essential goods contributed by donors to be sent to Ukraine. A system was set up to get the goods into the hands of those who needed it.

After this, the focus was to create a village to relocate people to West Ukraine. “We started ordering mobile homes from Turkey.

We put together a chain that delivered ten houses to Western Ukraine that became part of another village, and they became part of another forty houses in the village called the Baranova Village,” Maks said. As the war continues, Maks hopes more people take the same initiative to help.

In taking the extra step to help, Maks went to Poland to assist refugees. “After spending some time at home, I realized how important it was for me to go back and help as much as I could, at least as a way to justify my safe way out of the country,” Maks said. Through Baranova27 and Maks’ return, his goal is to bring as much awareness to the conflict as possible.

Helping those in need are not Maks’ only entrepreneurial activities. Following the conclusion of the DWTS journey, Maks co-founded an upscale vodka brand, Tetya KAPA, with close friends, vintner Ian Devereux White and Napa Valley Distillery Founder Arthur Hartunian. “Our profound connection was solidified in Napa Valley, where we collectively decided to pool our talents and establish Tetya KAPA,” Maks said. “This name pays tribute to my beloved aunt, Kapa, who embodied qualities such as family, love, tradition, honor and determination.” Tetya KAPA uses grapes from Napa Valley and ancient winter grapes to represent Maks’ Ukrainian heritage.

With his wife, Maks created a unique online shopping space, called the Maks & Peta Marketplace, that reflects their family values and commitment to making a positive impact. “Our marketplace offers a thoughtfully curated selection of products, from household essentials to cosmetics, designed to make your shopping experience easy and enjoyable while sharing our personal style and family essence. But it’s more than shopping; it’s a platform for giving back,” Maks said. The marketplace supports Baranova27 so when you shop, a portion of the proceeds go to the non-profit. Maks and Peta are grateful for all the support.

Maks is a family person through and through. Outside of the public eye, their family loves to relax, enjoy family time and play games. Beach days, hikes and the boardgame Settlers of Catan is just a few of their family favorites. So, while DWTS is in Maks’ past, dancing, spending time with his family and helping those in need aren’t.

I approach my practitioner and protocol research like Sherlock Holmes. And each year I notice the increase in dividends of sustained energy and overall well-being. We would love to think it takes only one magic pill or your favorite food, however, with a combination of healthy foods, consistent physical training with increased load and practicing stress management modalities like yoga, you can experience quality and quantity of health. Don’t shoot the messenger; the equation is more than eating right and exercising more. In other words, you can’t out-exercise unhealthy habits.

My go-to for peptides is Dr. Ken Winnard and his team at OneLife Health and Performance in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. It was incredibly helpful to learn from Dr. Winnard that “Peptides are molecules that occur naturally in all living organisms. Humans have peptides in every cell and tissue, and they are essential for several critical functions related to maintaining health and homeostasis. Depending on your needs, peptides can be used to treat low energy levels, low libido, several mood disorders, elevated body fat, signs of aging and more.” Like any protocol, it is most important to identify a qualified practitioner who will listen to you, customize the treatment to achieve the goals communicated and adjust as necessary. As bio-individualized beings, it isn’t a one-size-fits-all, even from one month to the next for us.

Alzheimer’s disease is an unforgiving illness. It robs people of their memories and their identities, taking a brutal toll on individuals, families and society.

The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease affects an estimated six million Americans—a number that is expected to reach 14 million by 2060.

The disease is a complex puzzle, but one that is beginning to take shape. Among the experts helping put the pieces together are renowned researchers and physicians at the Mount Sinai Health System and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. They shared their thoughts about the most promising treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, now and on the horizon.

Georges Naasan, MD Associate Professor of Neurology Medical Director, Division of Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry Co-Medical Director, the Barbara and Maurice Deane Center for Wellness and Cognitive Health Since I began caring for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, we haven’t had many medications to offer. The only medications we’ve had were drugs developed in the 1990s. They work by giving healthy brain cells a boost of the chemical messenger acetylcholine. They make it seem as if cognitive decline slows down, but the disease is still moving along inside the brain.

Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved some new drugs, Leqembi® (lecanemab) in July 2023 and Aduhelm® (aducanumab) in 2021.

Some doctors have questioned whether the side effects of aducanumab outweigh its benefits, but so far, lecanemab is showing more promise. Both are in a class of drugs known as amyloid immunotherapies, which can help clear amyloid plaques in the brain. In people with mild cognitive impairment or early symptoms of dementia, amyloid immunotherapies appear to slow down but not stop the disease.

While that is encouraging, we still don’t have scientific evidence that confirms amyloid plaques are the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s disease. There are many other changes in the brain that occur with Alzheimer’s that these drugs do not target.

While I’m cautious about what amyloid immunotherapies can achieve, it is still exciting to have something to offer patients. Of course, our treatment for patients is multipronged. At the Barbara and Maurice Deane Center for Wellness and Cognitive Health, our team includes physicians, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, nurse practitioners and other specialists, all working together to help patients living with dementia and their families. That includes things like treating mental health issues like anxiety and depression, working with families to develop safe living situations, brainstorming about finances, helping with caregiver support and so many other services.

In the future, I think drugs targeting amyloid will be combined with those that target other brain changes in Alzheimer’s disease. We still need scientists to continue working to understand the causes of the disease. What starts that ticking time bomb that eventually leads to memory loss and other symptoms? I’m so grateful to be at Mount Sinai, where I’m surrounded by such a dedicated team of providers and where we can work closely with so many talented researchers.

We’re continuously thinking about how to incorporate new discoveries so that we can serve our patients better.

Fanny Elahi, MD, PhD Assistant Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience and Pathology, Molecular and Cell-Based Medicine Director of Fluid Biomarker Research, the Barbara and Maurice Deane Center for Wellness and Cognitive Health Co-Director of Genetics and Genomics Core, Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center I believe the reason it has taken so long to find impactful treatments for Alzheimer’s disease is that it isn’t just one disease. There are many different pathways to the same end problem in the brain. We need to understand those different pathways to treat them more precisely. And we can begin to do that now that we have tools available to measure the molecular signatures of Alzheimer’s disease in the blood.

My lab focuses on developing new methods to measure those molecular signatures, or biomarkers. Right now, we treat Alzheimer’s disease when someone has symptoms. But by that point, a lot has gone wrong in the brain. With blood biomarkers, we can detect disease before people have symptoms. And we can develop highly precise treatments that target different underlying disease processes. I am hopeful that some of those treatments will come quickly, by repurposing drugs that have already been approved for other disorders. I think in the not-so-distant future, we will have blood tests for brain health.

But there will have to be a shift in the culture. We have been treating Alzheimer’s disease like a box: you are either in it or you’re not. It’s a continuum. If we treat it like a continuum, we will be able to make use of blood markers to put people into a risk category, much as we do with blood tests that measure cholesterol levels.

When you go to your primary care doctor, they don’t put you in a box based on your cholesterol level. Instead, they put you into a risk category and intervene to prevent heart disease based on that category. Blood biomarkers will also allow us to estimate a person’s risk of Alzheimer’s disease, so we can intervene with lifestyle modifications and treatments before they have irreversible symptoms. We are starting to shift the perception of Alzheimer’s from a deadly, incurable disease to one we can do something about. I imagine that in a few years, we will be treating each Alzheimer’s patient differently, depending on what drives their disease. These blood biomarkers are taking our interventions to the next level.

Loeb Center for Alzheimer’s Disease at Mount Sinai My lab uses genetic approaches to understand Alzheimer’s disease. What has been frustrating is that for decades, promising findings from animal research just haven’t translated to treatments for humans. But now, two new drugs—Leqembi® (lecanemab) and Aduhelm® (aducanumab)—have been approved for Alzheimer’s disease, and another similar drug, called donanemab, is likely to be approved within the next few months. These drugs are based on hypotheses that came out of human genetic research published three decades ago. It has been a long time coming.

These new treatments are a type of drug known as amyloid immunotherapies. They are designed to clear amyloid fragments from the brain. The treatments have only modest effects on cognition. However, they help to confirm the hypothesis that beta-amyloid is central to the disease process. It’s an important first step and I think there will be second-generation drugs to follow that will be even more effective.

There are other promising treatments on the horizon. Over the last 10 or 15 years, my lab has focused on trying to understand the genetic components of sporadic late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. We discovered that much of the genetic risk is related to immune cells in the brain called microglia, which clear debris. If you think of amyloid as the garbage, these cells are like garbage collectors. That finding is leading drug companies to new kinds of therapeutics— treatments designed to amp up those “garbage collectors.”

Meanwhile, researchers are learning more about the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene, which is the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to the common APOE4 variant, which increases risk, several other APOE variants have now been identified that appear to protect against the disease. If we can understand how they work, we may be able to mimic their effects in people who don’t have the protective versions of the gene.

I believe we need to develop multiple drugs that target many different mechanisms and combine them for maximum effect. At the Ronald M. Loeb Center for Alzheimer’s Disease at Mount Sinai, we have many researchers looking at the disease from different angles. I’m optimistic because we’ve identified so many new targets. I think that in the next decade, the way we think about and treat Alzheimer’s disease is going to change dramatically.

The return of Art Basel Miami Beach comes as the season changes. The annual affair has named the 277 galleries participating in its 2023 iteration, slated to run December 8 to 10, with preview days on December 6 and 7. The number represents a slight dip compared to 2022, during which a record-breaking 283 exhibitors participated. This year’s iteration will focus on the Latin American and Caribbean diasporic scenes and will feature galleries from Egypt, Iceland, the Philippines and Poland. The fair is led by Vincenzo de Bellis, Art Basel’s director of fairs and exhibition platforms.

“Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark”

“Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark,” a new exhibition about the extraordinary rescue of Denmark’s Jewish population in 1943 opened at New York’s Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. “Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark” commemorates— through archival materials, photographs, recordings, testimonials and other artifacts—one of the most effective and exceptional instances of mass resistance in modern history. This inspiring moment of individual and collective action raises the daunting question: do you have the courage to act?

These are lessons we can all remember in times of moral difficulty, and they’re particularly important for children as they grapple with our past and build our future.”

Despite the enormous risk, Jewish and non-Jewish neighbors of all ages mobilized to evacuate thousands of Danish Jews to Sweden, as threats of deportations increased. Together, these ordinary citizens united against Nazism and saved nearly 95% of Denmark’s 7,800-person Jewish population.

“We’ve been fortunate to work with Local Projects to bring this innovative exhibition to life and discover new ways to educate the public, particularly young people, through engaging technology,” said Jack Kliger, museum president and CEO. “As the number of Holocaust survivors decreases and we confront resurgent antisemitism, we must proactively engage new generations in the fight for a better world. Our charge is to inspire and equip young people to be compassionate citizens and leaders.”

Designed for visitors ages nine and up, the exhibition incorporates themes of bravery and resilience to help young people make connections to their own lives and reflect on the dangers of prejudice, as well as their own potential for moral and courageous action.

Regina Skyer, vice board chair of the museum and founder of Law Offices of Regina Skyer and Associates, New York’s premier special education law firm, said, “Courage to Act,” is a special opportunity to reflect on the Holocaust, one of the darkest moments in history, while also considering our individual capacity to act with bravery.

Created in conjunction with the award-winning firm Local Projects, “Courage to Act” uses stateof-the-art technology and creative storytelling, including dynamic hologram-like technology, to immerse visitors in the story, allowing them to hear directly from the past through the stories of people who engaged in the rescue and whose lives were saved.

The project director for “Courage to Act” is Ellen Bari, the author and creator of award-winning, multimedia exhibits and programs for children and adults. Bari’s own family was forced into the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia, where the Danish Jews who were not rescued were also sent.

“Eighty years later it seems almost impossible that the people of Denmark took such acts of

courage,” said Bari. “Yet those who risked their lives to save their neighbors saw it as simply ‘the right thing to do.’ It’s the simplicity of that reasoning that underscores how truly incredible this story is. I am honored to share these acts of courage with young people, as they think about opportunities in their own lives for positive action and their own potential. As the Talmud says, ‘to save a life, is to save the entire world.’ We all have that potential.”

Working alongside Bari, the Ukrainian artist Sveta Dorosheva and Bomb author Steve Sheinkin serve as the illustrator and scriptwriter, respectively. Interactive Discovery Walls will allow visitors to look back in time as they open windows, part curtains, or step into a depiction of the Copenhagen Synagogue and be transported back to 1943 via video, photographs and audio.

“Courage to Act” will also feature three hologram-like narrators, based on real individuals, who will share experiences of the Danish occupation and rescue throughout the exhibition.

In a climate of widespread antisemitism and Holocaust denial, “Courage to Act” will address a critical need by reaching younger children. The Museum is also developing educational materials, prepared by Bari, Museum VP of Education Elizabeth Edelstein, and the Museum’s education team that will be available to schools around the country. In addition, an extensive online museum experience will be created for people who cannot attend the exhibition in person.

‘In Between’ series kicks off with Ben Hagari

Z

AZ Corner, a recently-introduced public digital gallery presented by ZAZ10TS that showcases artwork on a large LED billboard in the heart of Times Square, kicks off its latest “In Between” series with artist Ben Hagari and his pandemic-inspired “About Face” collection.

Located on the corner of 41st Street and 7th Avenue, the “In Between” series of video art is a public service sponsored by Tzili Charney, owner of 10 Times Square and founder of ZAZ10TS, in an effort to have the art continue in the area for public viewing.

Hagari is an award-winning artist whose works have been shown in prominent museums around the world. At the center of his project is an expressionless protagonist shown from the back of his head — which is shaved — and a projected face void of all facial features. His attire is worn frontside-back, and his movements are reversed.

“The scenarios portray a mundane existence in a world whose marks have been erased,” Hagari said.

“Books have no titles or words; photographs are blanked out; labels are removed; we are left with data. It generates a binary structure: backward and forward, front and rear, serious and funny.”

The video project is shot entirely in New York City as the Tel Aviv artist was isolated and stayed in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The character, constrained by limited expression and space, continues to navigate daily routines. The faceless protagonist found new relevance with everyone around wearing masks, concealing their faces and, inevitably, their facial expressions.

ZAZ Corner features a digitally activated screen with a rotating series of images and videos that individually morph, bringing the art to life for public street viewing. The “In Between” series will feature a rotation of artists and themes that are interspersed between commercial messages every two to three minutes.

“Although New York City has been in a shutdown mode due to the pandemic with galleries and museums closed to visitors, ZAZ Corner continues to bring digital art to the public for viewing safely while social distancing and wearing a mask,” Charney said. “The ‘In Between’ collection will feature artwork on a continuous, ongoing basis with inspiring themes and images. Even though museums continue to be shuttered, our intent is that the show must go on and the art can never stop.”
