one mann’s opinion

I first want to thank everyone that takes the time to read One Mann’s Opinion. No matter where I am in New York City, people seem to mention it. I also want to make a note on our last cover, Mount Sinai. It was very special to me, and I am honored that they graced our May 2023 cover. For our June/July 2023 issue, I am pleased to announce Bonnie Lautenberg as our cover.

Bonnie and I go way back. Her parents were dear friends of my parents, our families have always been close and her late husband, Frank Lautenberg was a terrific, loving man. Bonnie is an amazing person and as an artist she has a particular niche to her work, which has been shown in many museum collections including the National Museum of African American History, Newark Museum and the Boca Raton Museum. She donates her artwork to various organizations and lends a great hand to charities like the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF).

I am honored to have gotten the chance to see Bonnie’s work presented and enjoy seeing the eloquent interviews she’s had. As her friend, I am thrilled to have Bonnie on our cover, and I hold great pride in her choice in showcasing her story and work in Mann About Town. It was a pleasure to work with her on this project.

Looking forward, there are multiple events we plan to hold in The Hamptons this summer and I look forward to seeing everyone enjoy the wonderful atmosphere created by the people we consider “stars.” We also have the Mann Charitable Golf Outing coming soon, which brings people from all over in support of our important charitable causes, including geriatric diseases like Alzheimer’s, macular degeneration and more. I enjoy being an active participant in charities and golfing for great organizations like Friends of the IDF, Rabin Medical College and the Jewish Museum.

No matter what we do, there is so much interest in the magazine, and through the testimonials and awards we have won, our presence has spread to New York, Palm Beach, Miami, Los Angeles, The Hamptons, and now Aspen. We learn more every day and I am thrilled to be working with Alex. In all my years in publishing, I have never met a more wonderful person. She has the warmth, creativity and work ethic I have never seen before, and I look forward to working on future issues with her.

At Mann About Town, we always aim to offer informative, exciting articles that keep you on the cutting edge of fashion, dining, wellness, real estate and more. We are looking forward to continuing to bring you the best lifestyle content out there throughout 2023.

Raised Over $800,000 for Local Cancer Patients in Need

Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope’s “Dance the Night Away” 2023 Gala

Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope (CAHH) hosted the 2023 Dance the Night Away Gala at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. Presented by The West Palm Beach Fred Astaire Studio, twelve local celebrities laced up their dancing shoes to raise funds for needy qualified families dealing with cancer while undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation. Chairs of this electrifying and successful event were Janet Levy and Farley Rentschler, along with honorary Chairs Max and Joseph McNamara.

CAHH gathered the top dancers for Palm Beach County’s celebrity dance-off for the third year in a row. Twelve local non-professional ballroom dancers took private dance lessons from the Fred Astaire Studio to prepare for the competition that took center stage in front of a sold-out crowd. The audience went wild after each performance, and the judges applauded their efforts and routines as impressive, dramatic and entertaining.

Louis van Amstel, National Champion and professional dancer from the acclaimed TV show “Dancing with the Stars,” served as the

evening’s Master of Ceremonies. The three celebrity judges included Cathy Rigby, actress and Olympic gymnast, Lorenzo Borghese, an Italian American businessman and television personality and Artem Chigvintsev, a professional dancer and season 29 mirrorball winner on “Dancing with the Stars” as well as an Emmy nominee for his choreography on the show.

After cocktails, guests enjoyed the dance competition followed by a stunning performance by International Ballroom Dancers Craig Smith and Andrea Harvey.

The Palm Beach County Celebrity Dancers that competed for Cancer Alliance’s 2023 Top Female and Male Dancer in the Dance the Night Away Dance Competition included female dancers: Diane Avonda, Victoria Herbert, Kerrie Lance, Gillian Lieberman, Kristina Olsen Madden, Gina Sabean and Katherine Sheneman. The male contestants included Terry Duffy, Kyle Lucks, Joseph McNamara, Rick Rose and Bruce Sutka.

The CAHH 2023 Top Female Dancer was Real Estate Agent, Gillian Lieberman and

Top Male Dancer was Business Executive and Honorary Chair of the event, Joseph McNamara. Philanthropist Kerrie Lance was awarded the People’s Choice Award- receiving the most votes and raising the most money before and during the event.

“We are so grateful to everyone who supported the 2023 Dance the Night Away event,” said Stanton Collemer, CEO of CAHH. “Each dollar we raise is precious. It helps us to achieve our goal of providing emergency financial assistance to help cancer patients pay their non-medical expenses while they are undergoing treatment. This assistance will, in many cases, prevent homelessness. The cost of cancer treatment is so formidable that it can deplete all family resources needed to cover fundamental expenses such as rent, utilities, food, transportation, pet care and insurance.”

“Thanks to our generous supporters, we have been able to serve 1,200 individuals each year and disbursed over $6 million in the past 18 years. With the continued help of our community, we look forward to a bright future, allowing us to expand our services and serve more people in dire need,” Collemer added.

Anne Klein and Supermodel and Eco-Lifestyle Entrepreneur Candice Swanepoel Partnered with Custom Collaborative to Impact Women and Our Planet

In observance of Earth Month, iconic American fashion brand, Anne Klein, announced a partnership with current brand Ambassador, Supermodel and Founder / CEO of eco-lifestyle brand, Tropic Of C, Candice Swanepoel and the Harlem-based social enterprise, Custom Collaborative, that supported, inspired and engaged a cohort of 16 women, ranging in age from 25 to 56, from no to low income and immigrant communities as they pursued careers in the sustainable fashion industry.

“This partnership aligned two important initiatives for Anne Klein: to uplift and celebrate women who are positively changing the world through a balance of image and impact,” said Jameel Spencer, CMO in residence for Anne Klein. “And supports our commitment to and eff orts towards a greener, more sustainable future.”

In May, Anne Klein hosted a lunch & learn event for the students where they met with and were inspired by a panel of professional women, like Candice, currently working within the fashion industry on eco-centric collections.

“When women come together there’s a kind of magic that happens. I’m proud to be part of an initiative that supports female entrepreneurs and helps them to excel in the sustainable fashion industry,” enthused Swanepoel.

Along with Candice, the lunch & learn event will include: Chani Labowitz senior vice president of Creative for eGluck, a major force in the watch industry that manufactures, brings to market and ships timepieces worldwide including the Anne Klein Consider It watch collection which is made from repurposed ocean plastics; Victoria Yee Howe, a self-taught designer and tailor with over 20 years of experience designing and constructing everything from clothing, fi ne lingerie to waterproof luggage; and Ngozi Okaro, executive director and founder of the Custom Collaborative.

“This new partnership is a testament to how much good can happen when we invest in women,” stated Okaro. “It is our pleasure to work with the heritage brand, Anne Klein and Candice Swanepoel, brought together by the thoughtful leadership of Julia Kisla and Lucy Jackson of the Lions Talent Management. Everyone in the Custom Collaborative community is excited about our work together – shaping the future of the planet and those who inhabit it.”

In July, the program will culminate with a fashion show, sponsored by Anne Klein, featuring the designs produced by the graduates.

“Life of Pi”

Ottomanelli is the oldest family-owned and -operated meat retailer in New York. The family has been selling high-quality meats and wild game since the early 1900s. It offers prime cuts and exotic meat, among other products. With many New Yorkers waiting out

The Gentle Soul Within

continues; the art is for sale on the MvVO Art Artsy gallery. The Ad Art Show 2020 was an innovative, all-digital contemporary art show

“Life of Pi” at the Schoenfeld Theatre brings two powerful things to this show, sensational projections and an incredible performance by lead actor, Hiran Abeysekera (Pi). Playwright Lolita Chakrararti generally keeps the play steadfast to the novel by Yann Martel. It takes a while in the first act to pick up steam, but when it does, it is quite moving and in-depth.

With political turmoil in India, the family which owns a zoo is setting out from Pondicherry, India to Canada for a better life. Bringing the animals along, the ship sinks and Pi is alone on a small boat with four of the zoo’s animals. The real question, as in the book and movie is: are animals metaphors for people? When Pi recounts his story to the authorities, is his remembrance accurate? Pi has been on the sea for 227 days, sometimes he goes longer than a week without water. His delirium has the Bengal tiger, by the name of Richard Parker, talking to him.

The precocious Pi attends a Muslim Mosque on Fridays, a Hin-

and the human instinct to connect.

du Temple on Saturdays and a Christian Church on Sundays. To him, all religions have the same premise. In the throws of this play, it is about religion. When the Japanese representative investigating the case tells Pi that he is an atheist, Pi tells him when he hears his story, he will believe in religion and God.

Born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Gil has moved throughout South and North America her entire life. The constant migration has shaped her multicultural perspective and nurtured her interest in art as a way to transcribe her personal experience using a unique visual language. Her studio is based in New York. She will hold her first solo art exhibit showcasing her work on December 3. gabrielagil.com

As Pi makes his way on the sea, Andrzej Goulding’s video design is exceptional. The waves come crashing up against the boat as Pi navigates the Bengal tiger which is the only animal left of the four. Director Max Webster does an admirable job with a so-so ensemble cast. For the most part, “Life of Pi” moves well and keeps the audience’s interest. Tim Lutkin’s lighting takes us to the eerie depths of the sea with cool blues and onward to the bright oranges of happier days. While the puppetry by Finn Caldwell and Nick Barnes never wows us, the costumes by Tim Hatley, who also does the scenic design, are first-rate on both accounts. The sound design by Carolyn Downing is strong and complements the video and staging, making Pi a strong contender for a Tony for Best Play.

National Geographic held a premiere and panel discussion at Alice Tully Hall showcasing the first two episodes of a limited series, “A Small Light.” This inspiring 8-epsiode limited series is based on the true story of a 20-something-year-old Miep Gies, who played a critical role in hiding Anne Frank and her family during the Nazi occupation in Amsterdam.

Actors Bel Powley, Liev Schreiber and the Executive Producers Susanna Fogel, Joan Rater and Tony Phelan held a Q+A panel discussion after the episodes where they discussed the inspiration of the show and the characters. Couple Tony Phelan and Joan Rater began the panel by explaining how they came up with the idea of telling Gies story several years ago from a family trip to Amsterdam. Joan stated that they wanted to keep the historic story from being outdated and to create familiarity with the characters. The night ended with a reception filled with guests, drinks and live music.

A Small Light premiered on May 1 on National Geographic. The limited series will also stream on Disney+ and Hulu, with new episodes every Monday at 9 p.m.

Sweetbriar’s Executive Chef Bryce Shuman Launches 2023 Spring Menu

Michelin-recognized Sweetbriar focuses on live-fi re cooking with wood and charcoal, seasonal vegetables and prime meats. The restaurant is helmed by Executive Chef Bryce Shuman who has an impressive background, having worked under Daniel Humm at three-Michelin-starred Eleven Madison Park for six years, opening his own successful restaurant, Michelin-starred Betony where he received a threestar review from The New York Times critic Pete Wells and was named Food & Wine Magazine’s “Best New Chef” of 2015.

Spring is Chef Bryce’s favorite season as the rebirth of nature’s bounty gives him and his kitchen team the opportunity to work with delicious, fresh vegetables and greens. His excitement to showcase new seasonal ingredients is evident as he obsesses over dozens of details to construct complex dishes with layered flavors that takes a team to create, but present simply on the table.

From the Market section of the menu are: Grilled Baby Romaine, a whole head of baby romaine grilled over the fi re and served with braised gigante beans and a vegetable consommé accented with nutritional yeast; and Chilled Asparagus, braised Provencal white asparagus and jumbo green asparagus dressed in an herb vinaigrette and served with a gribiche-like lemon caper vinaigrette.

New main courses that harness the power and flavor of the wood-fi re oven are: Smoked Chicken, Snow Dance Farms chicken smoked with hickory and apple wood then fi nished over the fi re to crisp the skin to a golden brown. The chicken is served with grilled spring onions and escarole fi nished with a light chicken jus scented with a dry Amontillado Sherry; Hanger Steak, pasture-raised, grassfed New Zealand hanger steak grilled over the fi re

and served with asparagus and a brown butter hollandaise; Bouillabaisseis roasted in the wood oven, cooking the cockles, shrimp, chipirones, octopus and scallops in a rich broth, and is accompanied by house-made sourdough bread spread with a saffron rouille; and Grilled Octopus, octopus tentacles grilled directly on coals to be rendered crisp by the fi re, served with an aromatic caper and herb vinaigrette and garnished with a bouquet of herbs.

The Wood Oven Section is devoted to signature sourdough pizzas that are naturally leavened using no commercial yeast, made with half Italian 00 flour and half spelt flour from Happy Valley Milling in Pennsylvania. The new addition is Spring Garlic Pesto Pizza, spread with a green garlic pesto then topped with asparagus and morels, fi nished with a combination of ricotta and feta, and drizzled with olive oil right before it is served. Also featured in the Wood Oven section are:

Fire Roasted Mushrooms, cremini, oyster and maitake mushrooms roasted with spring garlic and topped with a caraway crumble and thyme; and Chef Bryce’s Stone Ground Cornbread that echoes his upbringing in North Carolina served in a cast iron pan with whipped honey butter.

The spring menu items complement Chef Bryce’s signature dishes: Smoked Black Pepper Maple Duroc Ribs that feature a crispy exterior and meat tender enough to fall off the bone; the Sweetbriar Burger, that uses a lemon-caper vinaigrette to bring out the well-seasoned meat’s flavors, served with crispy potato wedges; and Spicy Mangalitsa Pizza, spread with a spicy pickled chili sauce then layered with Mangalitsa ham, fi red in the 800-degree oven, fi nished with honey and thyme.

The Wine Program was created in collaboration

with Dylan York, a principal of the Sommelier Society of America, boasting a robust selection of wines by the glass as well as a reserve list. With the help of York, the restaurant has recently begun a Coravin Wine Program, serving wines from their reserve list at an approachable price per glass.

A great way to start a meal at Sweetbriar is by savoring one of their cocktails designed by Beverage Director Ivan Papic (formerly of Balthazar, Pastis and Macao Trading Co.), in collaboration with Head Bartender Sasa Radovanovic (formerly of Schilling NYC). Divided into three sections, Martinis, Sweetbriar Signatures and Classics, highlights include: Smoking Pistolas, Dos Hombres Joven Mezcal, lime and Piri Piri Agave; Pick-Me-Up, a twist on the espresso martini made with Belvedere Vodka, pistachio syrup, black walnut bitters and espresso; and American Beauty, Rose Hip Luksosowa Vodka, lemon, rose water, egg white and rose buds.

Designed by Lea Cojot, Sweetbriar’s interior complements Chef Bryce’s live-fi re-cooked modern American cuisine, featuring a spacious dining room that utilizes soft notes of leather and wood to bring his warm, welcoming and vibrant vision to life. An open kitchen provides a view of the wood-fi red oven and the meticulous work that goes into creating the meal. At the entrance to the restaurant, there is a bar and lounge area where guests can enjoy premeal beverages and on Saturdays, enjoy the stylings of the Sweetbriar house band. Set next to the dining room is a white marble bar with emerald accents that provides full dinner service.

The restaurant is managed by TH/RST Group, headed by Partners Nick Bathurst, Dennis Konen and Brian Kelly, who also oversee GG Tokyo and ROOF at Park South.

Bonnie Lautenberg on a Lifetime of Art

COVER FEATURE
Photography by Michael Paniccia

Photographer. Political Spouse. Businesswoman. Activist. Artist. Bonnie Lautenberg has held a number of roles in her career, and she continues to pursue new horizons in her work as an artist.

The arts were always important to the Long Island, New York, native who also spent years living in New Jersey before moving back to New York City after her first husband passed away.

“My father was a collector of the Ash Can School of Artists and my mother was a dancer and did the choreography for many of the PTA and synagogue shows and we always went to all of her performances,” Lautenberg said. “The lights and glamour of it all influenced me. I wanted to be on stage so I pursued an acting career but it was hard to continue once I had two young children.”

She did have some small parts as an actress, doing TV commercials, industrial films and a role as a pregnant woman in the film “Next Stop, Greenwich Village.” She was then pregnant, but they wanted her to be very pregnant so they enlarged her belly for the film shoot.

An avid photographer of her own children, using a simple point-and-shoot camera, a woman on the movie set introduced Lautenberg to Erika Stone, a photojournalist for Time and Der Spiegel, a specialist in photographing children and a member of the New York Photo League. Stone’s work is included in the National Gallery of Canada, the Center for Creative Photography and the New York Historical Society Museum and Library.

“Erika really taught me how to take good pictures with her Nikon camera as compared to my point-and-shoot,” Lautenberg said, “But it wasn’t until I saw my sister’s new Canon camera that I decided to upgrade and buy a serious Canon camera. I quickly registered to take classes at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City. l also started taking photography trips with professional photographers. My first trip was a trip to Turkey with Arlene Collins, a teacher at ICP.”

Lautenberg began traveling around the world with many interesting teachers, photographing people, landscapes, communities and architecture.

“I went to Antarctica with Seth Resnick and John Paul Caponigro whose goal is to get the photographer in touch with themselves so they can take their photography to a higher level,” she recalled. “We would photograph all day and critique in the evenings, learning as we analyzed each photograph discussed. My photographs of the incredible ice sculptures were amazing as I captured these magical forms while moving about in our zodiacs. India, with the Guggenheim Museum, was filled with color and people dressed in colorful saris, cows in the streets and fabulous architecture. When I brought my film in to be developed, the film lab raved about my photographs. ‘How long were you in India to get this fantastic body of work?’ I was quite flattered!”

Closer to home, Lautenberg photographed the Israel-Palestinian Peace Accord at the White House in 1993 with President Bill Clinton, Chairman Yassir Arafat and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

“Another lab told me my photographs were as good or better than many of the professional photographers,” she said. “I started thinking maybe I have some talent.”

Meanwhile, Lautenberg was studying the technical side of the art. Learning to use tripods, lighting and different lenses all added to her magical results. One of her most interesting classes, she continued, was a week in downtown New York City taking classes with Jay Meisel, a teacher whose home was a former bank.

“He really taught me how to see through the lens,” she said. “He was a fabulous teacher and a beautiful street photographer.” So, she continued her global travels.

“Vietnam was all about the sensitive, beautiful people and the famous places we only heard about during the Vietnam War, beautiful bodies of water and memorable caves that

were stunningly lit,” she said. “Photographing Israel from a helicopter gave a different perspective than photographing this tiny country from the ground.”

Through all this travel and study, Lautenberg earned a degree from New York University in broadcast journalism but ended up going to work with her dad in his real estate business, giving her a solid background in business that has continued to serve her well. The degree did come in handy, however, when she made speeches while married to Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and later, as his widow, when she gave speeches on the Toxic Chemical Bill she worked on for three years with Senators Tom Udall (D-NM) and David Vitter (R-LA). It also helped her writing skills for the book about her husband that will be published next October.

Her years with Senator Lautenberg were hugely rewarding, exciting and satisfying on so many levels, she recalled. After a 16-year courtship, they married in 2004.

During her life with him, she created the project “How They Changed Our Lives: Senators As Working People,” which is now online in perpetuity in the Library of Congress. Senator Lautenberg was a prolific lawmaker, including the law that banned smoking on U.S. domestic flights and the National Minimum Legal Drinking Act, which set the age at 21.

She was curious as to what the other Senators accomplished, so she asked them all to be part of this project and got all 100 Senators of the 109th Congress to participate, with their offices contributing quotes to her in-office portraits. She photographed Senator Barack Obama days before his election as President of the United States. That photo is in the collection of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC and in the Newark Museum in New Jersey.

The Senator was also responsible for them going to see Lady Gaga at Radio City Music Hall in January of 2010 where Lady Gaga al-

lowed her audience members to photograph her and that was the beginning of a series Lautenberg did called “Pop Rocks.” She also photographed Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber. She has been exhibiting and showing these photographs ever since.

After doing photography for so many years and enjoying the Senate project immensely, in 2018 she created a new project called “Artistica! Where Hollywood Meets Art History.” This project juxtaposes a film still and a painting done in the same year and asks the question, how did one art form influence the other? This project has been hugely successful, not just by selling many prints of this work but also by having a solo exhibition at the Boca Raton Museum in Boca Raton, Florida in 2022.

A friend, Anthony Grant, was following her on Instagram and complimented her on posts of these works with words like “fantastic,” “fabulous” and “I love this!” When she read, “I Love This,” Lautenberg called him and asked him if he knew anyone at the Boca

Raton Museum. As luck and fate would have it, Grant knew Chief Curator Kathleen Goncharov.

Goncharov loved the prints Grant forwarded her and saw that they would complement a planned exhibition on “Hand Painted Hollywood.” She and the museum director, Irvin Lippman, came to see Lautenberg’s work in person at her Florida apartment and offered her a show. The six-month show was critically acclaimed and highly regarded by museum visitors.

Her life as an active political spouse ended with Senator Lautenberg’s death in 2013, though she continues to attend alumni events. However, her role as an activist continues, as she supports causes and candidates. During the pandemic, for example, a series of her work, “Even Lady Liberty Lost Some of Her Freedom, 2020” was posted on the website of the Art for Biden auction catalog, and The David Benrimon Fine Art Gallery asked if she was interested in participating in its “Rethinking America” exhibition. Soon,

Bonnie Lautenberg was exhibiting alongside Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Robert Longo and Deborah Kass.

“It was so cool that they wanted me in the show,” she said. The New York Historical Society also featured this piece in its exhibition of artwork made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The image of Lady Liberty also reappeared in her work after the U. S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision overturned the 50-year-old Roe V. Wade ruling permitting abortion. This time, Lautenberg depicted the statue with tears on her face, and “ROE” printed on all points of her crown, calling the image “Tears of Roe.” She used this piece to support women’s reproductive rights and donated 100 pieces to pro-choice candidates.

“Women wanted this piece and wanted their daughters and granddaughters to have one as a reminder for 50 years women had the right to make their own decisions about their pregnancies and their bodies,” she said.

Most recently, she has taken on gun safety, working with former U. S. Congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ, and a survivor of gun violence) on “Guns Kill” with images of the Statue against a backdrop of automatic weapons. The image was displayed at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU this past year which closed on May 14. Lautenberg did an event with Giffords at the museum to raise money for the Giffords Law Center, her organization to help stop gun violence. Lautenberg’s activism will continue.

“I feel really good about being able to give back to help,” she said. “I’m not finished with this at all.”

In addition, Lautenberg supports various philanthropic causes, including the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF), in honor of her mother, who suffered from the disease. She was the honoree at the Palm Beach, Florida event for ADDF in March and the event raised the most money they ever raised in Palm Beach. “This is hugely important because as people get older, more people are suffering from Alzheimer’s and

other Dementia related illnesses,” she noted. Today, Lautenberg’s work is now in private and nine museum collections, including The Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, The New York Historical Society, The Broad Museum in Los Angeles, The Newark Museum of Art and The Portland Museum of Art, among others. Most recently, the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU kicked off Art Basel Season in Miami Beach with “Lady Liberty: A Bonnie Lautenberg Retrospective,” a solo showing of two decades of Lautenberg’s work including photographs and conceptual art that ran from November 15 through May 14.

It’s a heady achievement, especially at a time when just about anyone with a cell phone can consider themselves a photographer.

“It’s hard for photographers and artists to make a living, there are so many of us,” Lautenberg said. “I feel very lucky that I’ve had this opportunity to have three solo shows in a year. I’m very grateful and very lucky — it’s a lot of fun but a lot of work.”

HOTEL LA PALMA, CAPRI

Capri’s first hotel, originally built in 1822, is being transformed by Oetker Collection and owners, Reuben Brothers, into an elegant 50-room-and-suite property. This is the first hotel designed by interior design visionary, Francis Sultana, who is collaborating with acclaimed Italian craftsmen and local artisans.

Located mere steps from the famous Piazzetta, Hotel La Palma will comprise a rooftop restaurant and bar, its own beach club, a newly built pool deck, a spa and high-fashion boutiques. The La Palma Beach Club, also designed by Sultana, will become the day-into-night, buzzing epicenter of the social scene on the island. The food concept will be led by Neapolitan Chef Gennaro Esposito.

Reimagining a Capri icon, the 11th hotel of the collection, a 50-key hotel in vibrant Capri Village, will be a complete transformation of the original Hotel La Palma which dates back to 1822 the oldest hotel on the island. In line with Oetker Collection’s mission to carefully expand its portfolio of masterpiece hotels in the world’s most desirable destinations, the brand’s first Italian property was brought to life the island’s iconic dolce vita lifestyle on June 1, 2023.

Hotel La Palma is owned by Reuben Brothers, marking the latest landmark procurement in their pipeline of investments and developments in Europe. The Reubens Brothers’ acquisition also includes the legendary La Taverna Anema e Core nightclub, a famous nightspot frequented by celebrities, located on the same premises.

A REIMAGINED ICON

Hotel La Palma will celebrate the timeless and warm hospitality for which Oetker Collection is loved. The property has been conceived as a unique, elegant Mediterranean retreat on the fabled Italian island for the modern traveler. The original hotel on Capri will once more become the chicest address on the island for people who want to see and be seen. During its renovation, the room count of the hotel is being drastically decreased, from 80 to 50 rooms – including 18 suites – each complete with its own private balcony or terrace. Located in the beating heart of Capri, just around the corner from the famous Piazza Umberto I, well-known as the Piazzetta, Hotel La Palma is perfectly

positioned for guests to visit some of the most notable sites of Capri: I Giardini di Augusto Via Krupp, La Certosa and the iconic Faraglioni. Another of the island’s best-known, must-visit natural sites in easy reach from the hotel is the Grotta Azzurra the Blue Grotto, a dark cavern where the sea glows electric blue, the result of sunlight passing through an underwater cave.

A FEAST FOR THE SENSES

In true Italian fashion, Hotel La Palma will be a gourmand’s delight, with Gennaro’s restaurant, bar and terrace, under the direction of Chef Gennaro Esposito. Esposito is a culinary hero in Italy, having run his own two-Michelin Star restaurant, Torre del Saracino, for the last 23 years. A simple, stylish step back in time to the Capri of the 1950s, Gennaro’s will embrace the timeless romance of the island, serving unpretentious, authentic Italian cuisine. A contemporary, vibrant place that shuns formality and celebrates the spirit and cuisine of Capri, Gennaro’s will also benefit from being right next door to the great Taverna Anema e Core. Another highlight will be Bianca, a glamorous, newly created rooftop restaurant and bar open until late in the evenings with spectacular views over Capri Village and the sea in the distance. Bianca, also under the culinary direction of Chef Gennaro Esposito, will become the island’s chicest hangout, transporting guests to another time and place. In addition, Hotel La Palma will offer a brand-new pool deck, complete with an elegant pool bar that pays homage to the classic Capri of the golden age.

TO THE BEACH

A short drive to Capri’s southern coast, guests will discover Hotel La Palma’s elegant, yet buzzing La Palma Beach Club in the Marina Piccola, home to the island’s most famous beaches and restaurants. This will be the place where fabulous people come and go to watch sun-drenched days flow into glittering twilight evenings. Open to non-hotel guests, visitors will come from yachts and neighboring hotels as La Palma Beach Club becomes the meeting place of choice on the island for long, lazy lunches created by Gennaro Esposito and sunset cocktails. By day, it will be a playground for the great and the good and by night, home to carefree indulgence and the place to rendezvous and soak in Capri’s animated social scene. Meanwhile, back at the hotel, there will be an indulgent spa that will offer three treatment rooms, including one double treatment suite, a sauna, steam bath and ice shower, relaxation space and a fitness center. The hotel also offers three boutiques.

Oetker Collection to open its first Masterpiece Hotel in Italy

STATEMENT DESIGN

The property’s interiors are currently being transformed by Francis Sultana, a true maestro in the world of high-end interior design, in collaboration with Francesco Delogu of Delogu Architects. Sultana is one of the world’s foremost interior and furniture designers, working across both residential and commercial projects. His atelier studio is based in St James’s, London in the same building as David Gill Gallery, where he is also artistic director. Sultana is loved for his unique ability to merge the residential requirements of a domestic space with often large-scale visual art, sculpture and installation pieces. Sultana has frequented Capri for decades and has a great affinity for the island, its people and its culture. “Capri is an island that I love. Hotel La Palma is an iconic hotel that everyone will adore in its new lease of life. I wanted my design to reflect the very special relationship I have with Capri, that was love at first sight from my first visit in my early 20s; an island of romanticism and great aesthetes with a beauty and great inspiration for creativity, in all its forms,” Sultana commented.

Sultana has created the hotel foyer as an artistic statement, paying homage to Hotel La Palma’s original incarnation as a place where artists once stayed and would leave artworks behind them. From the moment one enters the hotel, the ceiling frescos of Roberto Ruspoli will immediately capture the attention. Keeping the space open, Sultana has sparingly added splashes of Mediterranean blue, green and turquoise – colors that dance around the interior. The curves of the ceiling are mirrored in the scalloped edges of the reception and concierge desks, and there is detailing in the planters, niches and column capitals. Large palms in planters bring the outdoors in, nodding to Capri’s love affair with the palm tree, which is also reflected in the hotel’s new logo as an abstracted palm tree design. Sultana has also incorporated bespoke lighting and upholstered furniture exclusively designed for Hotel La Palma.

The bedrooms have been designed to be a perfect “home away from home.” Exquisite craftsmanship, luxurious materials and the utmost attention to detail create rooms that are tranquil, tactile and ultimately welcoming – perfectly befitting the laidback Capri “dolce vita” lifestyle. Once again keeping the color palette neutral, Sultana has allowed the materials to speak for themselves. Bespoke furniture and carpets together with sophisticated lighting

accent the bedrooms, which lead into marble and bronze-lined bathrooms. Decorative attention to detail has been paid to everything, right down to custom bathroom taps. Francis Sultana’s unmistakable signature design flows through the indoor bar & restaurant, pool terrace & bar and the stand-out rooftop bar, which also carry the inspiration of Capri, always honoring the creativity of the Italian artisans that are helping to create this new landmark hotel.

HISTORY & HERITAGE OF HOTEL LA PALMA

Since 1822, Hotel La Palma – formerly known as Locanda Pagano – is the oldest hotel on Capri. The original owner, Notary Giuseppe Pagano, hosted travelers in his villa for the pleasure of long conversations and often, his guests were artists, poets, writers, architects, painters and musicians, all of who showed their gratitude by painting the walls, writing poems, singing and playing in what was dubbed the “Artists’ Hotel.” A collective of creatives began to gather from all over the world who were inspirited by the genius loci, charmed by the smooth, familiar atmosphere of this eccentric hotel. When Hotel La Palma opens in Spring 2023, guests will once again receive the same warm Italian welcome.

Timo Gruenert, CEO of Oetker Collection, commented, “I simply cannot think of anything more exciting than the outlook of opening a true masterpiece hotel in one of the most beautiful and glamorous destinations in the world, the island of Capri. It will be an homage to La Dolce Vita and the legacy of this legendary location – the first hotel in Capri – while reinventing Hotel La Palma to once again be at the epicenter of the island’s vibrant social scene. And as with all our masterpiece hotels, we are truly committed to creating a sense of timeless hospitality, deeply rooted in family spirit and genuine kindness.”

Jamie Reuben of Reuben Brothers added, “We are thrilled that Hotel La Palma will be joining the prestigious Oetker Collection portfolio of hotels; a group that has, for so long, upheld the very highest standards in refined hospitality. When we acquired the property we saw its potential to become a truly world-class hotel, a vision shared by Oetker Collection. We have no doubt that Hotel La Palma will be right at home next to some of the world’s most legendary hotels and part of this glittering hotel brand, and similarly that Oetker Collection will breathe new life into this history-steeped Italian icon.”

Unlocking A New Garden Refuge In The City Of Lights

INTRODUCING LA FANTAISIE: A MARTIN BRUDNIZKI-DESIGNED, BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN THE HEART OF FAUBOURG-MONTMARTRE, PARIS

Something very special and fantastical is coming to Paris. Debuting by the family-owned boutique Leitmotiv hotel group, La Fantaisie will open its doors in the bustling Faubourg-Montmartre neighborhood, in the heart of the city’s 9th arrondissement. Tapping into the local rhythm and opening out onto Rue Cadet, the hotel will not just be a destination for international travelers, but a meeting place for in-the-know locals and connoisseurs of the area. Historically, the market street draws its name from 16th century gardeners, brothers Jacques and Jean, who owned the Clos Cadet and supplied the court with fruit and vegetables. Today, with its charming secret garden, La Fantaisie builds on this heritage to offer a new tranquil haven where nature takes full reign.

The hotel’s debut will mark the homecoming of triple Michelin-starred Chef Dominique Crenn to the French capital from San Francisco – the only female chef to attain three Michelin stars in the USA – with the opening of zero-waste signature restaurant, Golden Poppy. La Fantaisie will also be renowned Swedish designer Martin Brudnizki’s first entry into the Parisian hotel scene, whose fantastical design centers around a spectacular courtyard garden that pays homage to the hotel’s location on rue cadet, named after brothers – and master gardeners – Jacques & Jean Cadet.

DOMINIQUE CRENN RETURNS TO PARIS

La Fantaisie will be under the culinary direction of the remarkable Dominique Crenn – a creative French visionary, and for whom this will be her homecoming, having spent her career in the U.S. since the 1980s. Crenn is renowned for having transformed Californian gastronomy to the point of becoming the first – and only – female chef to be awarded three Michelin stars in the States. Her vision leaves no room for compromise, centered wholly around local and sustainable products, and her cuisine at La Fantaisie will adopt a zero plastic and zero waste philosophy. Reviving the link between food and nature, the menu at the hotel’s flagship restaurant, Golden Poppy, will offer enticing dishes such as Turbot Ceviche with spiced parsnip milk and leche de tigre. Inspired by an antique garden greenhouse, Golden Poppy’s glass roof will connect the restaurant to the natural world outside, creating a relaxed atmosphere synonymous with Crenn’s restaurant in San Francisco.

MARTIN BRUDNIZKI’S ENTRY INTO THE PARISIAN HOTEL SCENE

Famed for his sense of exuberance, revelry and playfulness, renowned Swedish designer, Martin Brudnizki is designing the interiors of La Fantaisie. The hotel’s 63 rooms and 10 suites have been designed to provide a total disconnection from the hustle and bustle of the urban environment outside. Drawing

on nature as the chief inspiration, the color palette – consisting of soft greens, warm yellows and coral touches – evokes the natural world, creating a soothing and comfortable environment for all that enter. Thanks to the use of richly upholstered seats, lavish headboards and ornate walls and ceilings covered with floral wallpaper, guests are transported into a dreamlike world. Canopies, parasols and outdoor furniture further project the warmth of the natural, verdant surroundings, beckoning visitors for a relaxing break under the Parisian skies.

DISCOVER AN ENCHANTING NEW WORLD AT LA FANTAISIE’S SPA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HOLIDERMIE

Dedicated to total relaxation and wellbeing, and a switch-off from urban life, La Fantaisie’s spa will adopt a holistic approach inspired by ancient healing rituals and the curative power of underground springs. In the heart of this quiet secret sanctuary, multiple design features invite nature to flourish, including armchairs upholstered in soft green fabric and mosaics depicting sprouting plants. Selected as the hotel’s exclusive spa partner, French brand Holidermie advocates a unique, naturally vegan approach and a commitment to effective, simple and radiant beauty. Holidermie is committed to beautifying skin from the inside out while contributing to both the physical and mental well-being of all guests.

A Perfect 4-Days in Amsterdam: Canals to Countryside

Amsterdam, the capital city of The Netherlands, is famous for its picturesque canals, rich history and vibrant culture. It effortlessly blends old-world charm with modern city life, creating a dynamic and unique experience for travelers of all types. Whether you are embarking on an extended European holiday or Amsterdam is your final destination, visiting the “Venice of the North” will not disappoint.

Home to over sixty museums, many showcasing vast collections of notable Dutch art, charming neighborhoods, tranquil parks, eclectic shops and delicious cuisine, there is plenty to enjoy in Amsterdam, and four days is a perfect amount of time to explore and immerse yourself in this spirited city.

Day 1: Explore the Canal Belt and Jordaan Neighborhood

The Canal Belt, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a collection of 165 waterways snaking through the city’s different neighborhoods. Begin your day by walking along the canals while admiring the incredible architecture and charming bridges. One of the best ways to experience Amsterdam’s unique canal system is to book a leisurely ride on a private, vintage boat for lunch, dinner or an aperitif. Let your captain introduce Amsterdam perfectly and learn about its history, neighborhoods and great lore.

Next, explore the Jordaan neighborhood, a trendy and scenic area in the city center, popular among tourists and locals. The Jordaan is a great place to soak up Amsterdam’s laid-back vibe, and it is filled with boutiques, cozy cafes and specialty shops. Explore its outdoor market and local cheese stores, and with its many dining options, it is a perfect place to have a delightful lunch alongside a canal. Enjoy a glass of wine, indulge in some of Amsterdam’s incredible fare and watch the boats and bikes pass by.

Plan ahead, as tickets are difficult to come by, and stop at the Anne Frank House. This museum is dedicated to the life and legacy of Anne Frank, the young Jewish diarist who documented her experience under Nazi persecution during World War II. The museum is a poignant reminder of the atrocities of the War and the resilience of the human spirit.

Day 2: Visit Keukenhof Tulip Gardens and the Tulip Fields

With a love of natural beauty, The Netherlands is home to one of the most extensive flower gardens in the world and is the largest supplier of cut flowers around the globe. No trip to Amsterdam is complete without a visit to the Keukenhof Tulip Garden. Regarded as the “Garden of Europe,” it is an approximate forty-minute drive from the city. Keukenhof is a must-visit springtime destination for flower enthusiasts when over seven million bulbs bloom during its annual opening. Given its popularity, we recommend an early morning departure to avoid the significant crowds and traffic that this floral wonder attracts.

Nearby, take advantage of the countryside roads and stroll or bike alongside the colorful tulip fields. This stunning display of flowers is a sight to behold and offers a unique experience that is hard to find anywhere else.

Not to worry if you miss the spring bloom. A visit to Keukenhof Castle and Gardens is possible year-round, offering lovely summer gardens, various seasonal events and a bustling Christmas market.

Day 3: Visit the Van Gogh Museum and Sample Dutch Cheese

The Dutch have a long tradition of cheese making and do not miss a visit to one of the city’s famous family-run shops to sample some. Try a local Gouda, Edam or Leerdammer, and choose which creamy and decadent variety is your favorite. If you decide to bring a hard cheese varietal home, they will happily package and vacuum seal it for easy travel.

Afterward, head to the Van Gogh Museum, which houses the largest collection of incredible works by Vincent van Gogh. The museum’s exhibits showcase the life and works of the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, offering a comprehensive experience that is both educational and inspiring.

Day 4: Explore the Countryside and Finish with Cocktails at Hotel De L’Europe

See the Dutch seaside by taking a day trip to one of the many beautiful coastal towns and villages located twenty to thirty minutes outside Amsterdam. Visit the pleasant village of Volendam to enjoy freshly caught seafood, including delicious oysters, while admiring stunning sea views.

Next, stop by the iconic windmills and wooden houses of Zaanse Schans, a residential neighborhood where 18th and 19th century Dutch life is captured in time. Some of the windmills are still operational, and you can visit artisan workshops, museums and quaint shops. Here you can rent bicycles or hop on a boat; both are fun ways to explore this enchanting village.

In the evening, return to the city center and enjoy a cocktail and a bite to eat at our favorite place to stay, Hotel De L’Europe. This family-owned luxury hotel has been an iconic part of Amsterdam’s history since 1896. Perched on the banks of the Amstel River, De L’Europe is the perfect place to unwind, relax and take in breathtaking water views after a bustling day. With fantastic on-site restaurant offerings, hip Freddy’s bar and a diverse choice of stylish and unique rooms and suites, De L’Europe is an excellent place to call home base during your stay in Amsterdam.

Beyond Basic: Body Contouring Treatments

Photos courtesy of Peter Thomas Roth

Body care has moved beyond the basics of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing. These days, targeted treatments are in high demand and women everywhere are flocking to beauty sites and store shelves to shop the latest and greatest innovations for the neck down. As our skin takes the spotlight this summer, body creams that help to fi rm, contour and diminish the look of cellulite and imperfections are quickly becoming some of the most sought-after beauty products around.

Naturally, we caught up with skin care guru Peter Thomas Roth to talk about this new consumer trend and to hear what he’s been up to in the body care arena. An influential segment leader in the beauty industry, Roth’s eponymous skin care line is the number one privately-held prestige skin care brand in the USA. Known for creating breakthrough formulas that deliver astonishing results, Roth leads all research and development efforts at his state-of-the-art lab and manufacturing facility.

The latest product innovation to emerge from Roth’s lab is FIRMx® Tight & Toned Cellulite Treatment. Here, Roth talks about the science behind this treatment and how the body care category has evolved.

What’s behind the recent body care movement toward contouring treatments?

Body care is the new facial skin care. In recent years, there’s been an uptick in the use of at-home clinical skin care treatments for the face… and now people want to treat their skin with the same level of care! Today’s consumer is very savvy and social media has elevated bodies the conversation around ingredients and product expectations. More and more women are looking to supplement their all-over body moisturizer with a body treatment cream that targets specific areas for visible contouring results.

What was the inspiration for your FIRMx® Tight & Toned Cellulite Treatment?

I love hearing from my customers and so many have told me that cellulite is one of their top body concerns. I always develop formulas inspired by the needs of my customers and FIRMx® Tight & Toned Cellulite Treatment is made just for them! My skin care products for the face are always formulated with the most effective active ingredients at the highest concentrations possible, and I brought that same philosophy to my FIRMx® Tight & Toned Cellulite Treatment. My chemists and I researched a multitude of ingredients and discovered Flavoslim™, a new ingredient technology that’s scientifically engineered to visibly help diminish the look of cellulite. The results are fabulous!

Why are contouring creams that target cellulite topping the body care list?

Cellulite doesn’t discriminate and is very common. Women of all ages, shapes and sizes have cellulite… and some men do too! It’s a completely normal and harmless skin condition but for those who are self-conscious about it, contouring creams that target cellulite offer an easy solution. The trick is fi nding a cellulite cream that really works! When shopping for cellulite cream, I recommend looking for products with ingredients that make a meaningful difference. For instance, caffeine is a common ingredient used for fi rming and tightening but you need to pair it with something stronger to see visible, long-term results.

What makes FIRMx® Tight & Toned Cellulite Treatment unique?

My goal when creating FIRMx® Tight & Toned Cellulite Treatment was to develop a product that made my customers go ‘WOW’ after applying it. The fi nal formula is clinically proven to reduce the look of cellulite in just two weeks! It is made with an advanced blend of invigorating caffeine, moisturizing African Mokaté Melon Oil and 1.5% Flavoslim™, a new breakthrough technology that helps to noticeably diminish the look of cellulite on the booty, belly, hips, thighs and arms. My cellulite treatment is like nothing you’ve tried before… promise! You’re going to look gorgeous.

Fratelli Aprea “Water and Its Healing Power”

Fountain of Youth

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Getting away and getting out is most certainly welcomed in our hurried lives. With a great deal of external and internal noise vying for our attention, finding ways to be calm can be difficult. When you step onto a Fratelli Aprea, you are not merely going for a ride. It transports you to a slower time, where friends and family gather to experience all the benefits of being together and on the water. The serenity washes over you as the boat glides across the surface.

Fratelli Aprea (“Brothers Aprea”) dates back to the late 1800s. The classic Italian fishing boat, called a Gozzo, was created in its original shipyard in Sorrento, Italy. The Fratelli Aprea of today is a vision adorned with teak and mahogany. You can see and feel the craftsmanship or, more akin to its heritage, the amore that went into building these vessels. As your feet leave the shore and you enter this floating world, you recline, smelling the sea air and soon your body and mind relax.

As Americans, we are allured by the fast-paced life and unending list of things to do. All the while, deep within, many yearn to step off the conveyor belt of life and rest. Through connection and conversation, Michael Sinacola, a friend of one of the younger Aprea brothers, understood this allure as well as the magic of being on the water. Living in Michigan near the expansive Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, he knew the many benefits of the combination of these special boats and time on the water. With his vision and these floating masterpieces, Mr. Sinacola took the conversations with his friend and established the USA division of Fratelli Aprea.

Imagine if a few hours or a day of spending time at rest and breathing deeply could improve your health. In our culture, it seems counter-intuitive to step away from doing to generate results. In light of the link between the planet, the considerable amount of water occupying it, and our bodies, it isn’t a mystery. Our body’s autonomic nervous system has three divisions: sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric nervous system. According to a publication by the Cleveland Clinic, “Our sympathetic nervous system controls your ‘fightor-flight’ response. Danger or stress activates your sympathetic nervous system, which can cause several things to happen in your body. Your parasympathetic nervous system’s job is usually to relax or reduce your body’s activities. Because of the signals it carries, the rhyming phrases ‘rest and digest’ or ‘feed and breed’ are easy ways to remember what your parasympathetic nervous system does.” The third system is our enteric nervous system. The part of your autonomic nervous system that manages how your body digests the food you eat.

The question each of us is faced with is how do we take the intellectual understanding of how our nervous system works and provide it with the nutrients it needs? Since we are all uniquely made or bio-individualized, it can be a trial-and-error process. A great place to begin is exposure to water. A dip in a nearby lake, pool, river or sea can activate the connection between our thinking mind and our innate knowledge within the body. You can expand on those moments with longer periods of time in and on water, and you will begin to notice reduced stress.

or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected and Better at What You Do” points to the vastness of water and its pivotal role as a primary ingredient in sustaining life. The body is largely made up of water, averaging more than 65% in adults. It makes sense that immersing in water is life-affirming, activating our parasympathetic system and helping with the critical process like digestion during times when you feel safe and relaxed.

At this time in human evolution when the asset of health is priceless, consider a break from the dayto-day hustle, venture to the water’s edge and treat yourself to time near, in, on or under water. This immersive experience creates the opportunity to connect within and with those you choose to be with. This summer, there is a great opportunity for you to step onto a Fratelli Aprea boat at The Delamar in Greenwich, Connecticut (delamar.com/ greenwich-harbor). This is a beautiful place with incredible boats and a visceral experience you won’t forget. While aboard, enjoy laughter and an Aperol Spritz, and take in all the healing and wonder water provides.

I am looking forward to summer, sharing time with family and friends and casting off from shore on one of the many beautiful Fratelli Aprea boats. I will be wearing my Riviera Boat Shoe by Sea Star Beachwear (seastarbeachwear.com), as I love how they immediately transport me to Portofino. These fashionable shoes take me from land to deck. And if our paths cross, I invite you to say hello and share your tales from the sea.

Rare Manuscripts Handwritten by Maimonides on Display at Upcoming Yeshiva University Museum Exhibit

A ground-breaking exhibit of extraordinary items, some never before displayed in public, including spectacular manuscripts in Maimonides’ own hand, make up “The Golden Path: Maimonides Across Eight Centuries,” a new Yeshiva University Museum (YUM) exhibit, running through December 31, 2023.

Artifacts with a personal connection to this great Jewish luminary include a Mishneh Torah (code of law that revolutionized the study and practice of Judaism) signed and personally approved by Maimonides; a fragment from the Cairo Genizah with Maimonides’ signature and other fragments in his hand; and a volume of his commentary on the Mishnah, containing notes written by Maimonides and a well-

known sketch of the Temple Menorah, which may have been drawn by the sage and has in recent decades become the model for menorahs used in public Hanukkah celebrations across the world.

“This exhibit reflects Maimonides’ influence as well as his core values which also form the worldview and aspirations of Yeshiva University,” said Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, president of Yeshiva University. “The basis for our educational enterprise is epitomized by Maimonides’ religious leadership and intellectual quest for truth. Yeshiva University is honored to introduce the journey of Maimonides’ works to the broader community who through this exhibit can better develop their knowledge of Maimonides, Jewish history and the values on which to build their lives.”

Also on display will be the first major public viewing of the exquisite, illuminated manuscript of “Moreh Nevukhim” (Guide to the Perplexed), completed in 1349 and in private hands for 500 years until it was acquired by the Italian government. Art Historian Evelyn M. Cohen described the manuscript as “a masterpiece of medieval book art” and “a tour de force of calligraphic sophistication.”

Beyond written work, visitors will see a beautifully carved 11th century door to the Torah Ark from Cairo’s Ben Ezra Synagogue, which Maimonides himself used when he lived in that city.

“There is not a single aspect of Jewish life and thought that is not shaped by Maimonides,” said Dr.

Ronnie Perelis, the chief Rabbi Dr. Isaac Abraham and Jelena (Rachel) Alcalay associate professor of Sephardic Studies at Yeshiva University. “This exhibition’s strength is in its ability to bring to life the way Maimonides’ ideas illuminated Jewish life throughout the diaspora and for generations after his death.”

An unprecedented partnership with international collections, the exhibit is the most impressive collection of Maimonides artifacts ever to be displayed together, and the first to focus as much on the man himself as on his impact and influence.

Curated by Dr. David Sclar, the exhibit is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog co-published by Liverpool University Press. The book explores Maimonides’ authority and impact as well as the Mediterranean and Islamic contexts in which he lived and includes essays by world-class scholars from institutions such as Princeton University, Bar-Ilan Univer-

sity, Ben Gurion University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, University of Amsterdam, University of Haifa, University of Oxford and Yeshiva University.

“Arguably, no other individual has had a more pervasive or enduring effect on Jewish religious life over the last millennium than Maimonides,” said Sclar. “This exhibition is intended to convey not only his importance, but the ways in which people have shaped and been shaped by his impact.”

Among the pieces that will be on loan to YUM are important and rare examples—such as 13th century Yemenite manuscripts, early printed books from Italy and the Ottoman Empire and texts produced by and for Christian audiences—from the Hartman Collection, the most significant private collection of Maimonides manuscripts and rare books; and spectacular manuscripts, some in Maimonides’ own hand, borrowed from the Bodleian Libraries in Oxford, the

British Library, the National Library of Israel, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Royal Library in Copenhagen, the Italian State Archives and others.

This exhibition is made possible through the generosity of Robert and Debra F. Hartman. The Leon Levy Foundation and a private family foundation both provided generous grants to support this project. Additional support was provided by the David Berg Foundation.

To attend the exhibit, go to the YU Museum at 15 West 16th Street located in the Center for Jewish History building. The exhibit is free and open to the public Sundays through Thursdays.

The video project is shot entirely in New York City as the Tel Aviv artist was isolated and stayed in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
