Editor's letter

As Christmas fast approaches, this whole issue focuses on the festive season.

In the fashion section you’ll find a dedicated ‘party pieces’ feature. Whether you want to enhance an outfit with glittery accessories, or opt for head-to-toe sparkle, we have you covered. You’ll find sequins (P10), metallics (P13), texture (P14), velvet (P15), and rhinestones (P17).

The Porter’s Store set the scene for our opulent editorial, Glitz&Glam. Mark Stephenson photographed Tilly Amy, showcasing the best of sequins for this season. Our favourite? Rixo’s bright pink mini dress.

It wouldn’t be the Christmas issue without a gift guide, so turn to page 30 for all your buying inspiration, be it Secret Santa, for her, him or kids. Our cover star is Anna Coutin. Anna and her husband took over 28 Halkett Place, and created Anna’s – a private members club offering a stylish space where members and guests can work, entertain and socialise.

Other Christmas features include homemade mulled wine recipes, tips on beating the festive indulgence and home décor ideas.

As always, I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together. Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

ANNA COUTIN

When Anna Coutin moved to Jersey with her family, she never expected to become the co-owner of a private members club.

Anna shares her story

When I meet Anna Coutin, the co-founder of Anna’s (28 Halkett Street), I find myself somewhat in awe. Anna is beautifully presented and has the most welcoming smile. She is determined, and business focused. A mother of two sons, she beams when she talks about them. Why did she get involved with another project when she already successfully runs two businesses? How does she fit it all in?

“It’s a funny story. I never wanted to get involved with the club. During the early part of lockdown my husband expressed an interest in it. I firmly told him not to get involved. However, a few days later he came home and announced, “we have a club”, I remember saying, ‘No, you have the club, I am not getting involved! Anna laughs.

As a qualified accountant Anna was soon roped in to do the accounts. Before long she was also doing the marketing and social media, and within a few weeks she became closely involved, becoming the face of Anna’s, with her husband taking a back seat. 

ANNA’S BACKGROUND

Anna was born in Siberia to a Lithuanian mother and a Russian father. When she was five they relocated to Lithuania where she would stay until she was 19. “My sister was living in the UK, so I decided to take the summer off and visit her. Six months soon turned into a year and before I knew it, I met my husband and never went back."

After having two children, Anna qualified as an accountant, admitting she found it a safe option rather than a passion.

When Anna hit 30, she jokes that she had a mid-life crisis. “I just thought, is this really what I want to be doing? Accountancy isn’t the most exciting profession” Knowing that her passion was working with people, Anna retrained as a corporate and executive coach, earned a diploma and started her consultancy business, Have the Edge – focusing on psychometric testing to gain a better understanding of people’s personalities in

the corporate workplace. Anna is also a qualified personal trainer. “Seeing people change and feeling better about themselves really brings me joy. With both the personal training and corporate coaching, it’s other people succeeding that makes me happy.”

Anna and her family relocated from Bognor Regis to Dubai, however, Anna soon realised that the countries values did not align with her own. “I did not want my sons to grow up in an environment where women are second best. It’s not how the world should be. We love Dubai, and will continue to holiday there, however, to live, it was not for us.”

In 2019, they moved again, this time to Jersey. “My husband and I spent a weekend in Jersey during the summer of 2019, and I fell in love with the place. We met new friends and discussed how it would be for the children. Just before Christmas that year we moved to the island.”

40 www.mannermagazine.co.uk
“It’s a funny story. I never wanted to get involved with the club."

ANNA’S CLUB

Anna’s is a private member’s club. Currently they are offering complimentary 12-month memberships to allow people to enjoy the experience without commitment. It was Anna’s view that they needed to earn the right to charge for membership. Members can also bring guests with them. They open from 10am until 1am. Enjoy tea, coffee and pastries in the morning and afternoon, a lunch service from 12 until 2, a dinner service from 7 until 9 and a full bar all day.

Set over three floors, Anna’s also hosts private events, whether it’s a corporate meeting or a birthday party.

“The majority of clubs in Jersey are male orientated so we called the club Anna’s as a nod to women. Every Tuesday at Anna’s is ladies’ night. The emphasis is to get women together, to enjoy

live music and each other’s company. Of course, men can still come along, everybody is welcome.” Her experience as a corporate executive coach has helped shape Anna’s. “As a team, we get together and talk about relationships and personalities, working out ways to click with each other rather than clash. Reducing potential conflict and achieving workplace harmony. We work as a team with all team members equally important. We are immensely proud of our team and what we have achieved in 7 short months." It has obviously worked well so far. In an industry plagued with staff shortages, they have had almost zero staff turnover, proving that working together as a team is the key to success. 

KATE MORRISON MAKEUP ARTISTRY

Hailing from Vancouver BC, Canada, Kate attended Blanche MacDonald Centre for Makeup artistry, graduating with a diploma in 2005. Her love of makeup formed from an early age, and she experimented with different styles and colours on herself in her spare time. At age 13, she even applied bridal makeup for her mother.

Kate then lived in Toronto briefly, working for the makeup brand Bobbi Brown before travelling through southeast Asia and spending a year in Australia, where she travelled around the country with the brand for store visits and events such as the Melbourne Cup. Upon her return to Toronto, she began working for MAC cosmetics. In 2012, Kate moved to the Cayman Islands, where she worked for the fashionminded salon Rock Gorgeous, applying makeup for multiple fashion shows and the Miss Cayman Islands pageant.

In 2015 Kate and her partner relocated to Jersey, where she picked up again with MAC, this time having the opportunity to learn from many of the brand's talented artists and trainers and eventually becoming Advanced certified. She left MAC at the end of 2019, just months before lockdown and took an office job. During this time, she was entrusted to the makeup of Real Housewives of Jersey newcomer Sarah Courtney. As the world slowly came out of lockdown, Kate Morrison Makeup Artistry was born, initially as a weekend job for wedding and event makeup and has been

full-time since early 2022. Having always loved the power of brows to transform the face, Kate then trained in HD brows and has since also added brow laminations and LVL lash lifts to her repertoire.

"At Kate Morrison Makeup Artistry, I create personalised makeup for weddings and events rooted in my passion for artistry. I love making someone feel their most beautiful for their special occasion. I also love creating beautiful brows. HD brows and laminations are tailored to complement the features and suit the individuals' tastes. And I offer LVL lash lifts, the low maintenance alternative to lash extensions."

Cutis Lift combines radio-frequency with microneedling technology to stimulate collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid beneath the skin. The superfine goldtipped needles target the deeper

MULLED WINE

Mulled Wine, and similarly Mulled Cider, are popular drinks over the Christmas season. They are served hot, often sweetened with sugar or honey, and flavoured with a variety of spices, oranges, and lemons. You can add a slug of port or brandy to give it an extra kick. Mulled is very similar to Nordic Glögg or Germany Glühwein, which was first recorded in the early fourteen hundreds and is drunk today with spiced gingerbread.

Mulled wine has changed over time with the vagaries of taste and fashion, one of the more traditional recipes was recorded by Mrs. Beeton in her famous cookery book using cloves, mace, and nutmeg. It also lists the wines to be mulled as claret and port, I reckon a tankard of hot port would pack quite a punch, however. It is called a Smoking Bishop and is made with caramelised citrus fruit and is mentioned in Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol’.

Today you can buy the spices for Mulled wine

already prepared as a sugar-based syrup or in little bags like T-bags. They are usually a combination of citrus peel, ground clove, cinnamon pieces, nutmeg, star anise and ginger. In recipes, I have seen bay leaves, cardamom and vanilla pods included so you could experiment until you are happy. Personally, I think that would be quite a nice way to spend an afternoon.

TOP TIPS

• Use whole spices not ground spices which will make your drink grainy

• Choose a soft, fruit forward red wine – look for jammy on the label, New World Californian Zinfandel and Australian Merlot are ideal, as is classic, lush plummy St. Emilion, from France

• Alcohol starts to evaporate at around 78 degrees Celsius so do not boil your mulled wine

• Allow time for the spices to infuse before serving

50 www.mannermagazine.co.uk
Christian Gott shares his mulled wine recipe as well as an alcohol-free alternative

MULLED WINE

Enough for 4 small or 2 large glasses

INGREDIENTS

• 1 bottle good Red Wine

• 60g Demerara Sugar

• 1 Cinnamon Stick

• 2 Star Anise

• 2 Cloves

• A pinch of freshly grated Nutmeg

• 1 orange, sliced into 1-centimetre slices

• 60ml Port, Brandy or Sloe Gin (optional)

METHOD

1. Put the wine in a saucepan with the orange, sugar, and the spices. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Taste to see if you want the wine sweeter and add more sugar to taste.

2. Remove from the heat and allow the spices to infuse.

3. Strain into another pan and reheat, stir in the sloe gin, port, or brandy if you are using it, and serve.

NON-ALCOHOLIC MULLED FRUIT PUNCH

You can make non-alcoholic mulled wine using a non-alcoholic wine in the recipe above and omitting the port, brandy, or sloe gin. If you don’t want a wine-based recipe, why not try this mulled fruit punch? Prepare the same way.

INGREDIENTS

• 400ml Cranberry or Pomegranate juice

• 400ml clear Apple juice

• 60g Demerara Sugar

• Juice and zest of 2 lemons

• 1 Cinnamon Stick

• 2 Star Anise

• 2 Cloves

• A pinch of freshly grated Nutmeg

• 1 orange, sliced into 1-centimetre slices

RECIPES

How to beat the Festive Indulgence

As we enter the festive period, we find ourselves inundated with social gatherings, party invitations, meals out and too many drinks. Navigating the social season without the seasonal bloat might seem impossible, but it doesn’t have to be.

First of all, it is crucial to remember to enjoy yourself. Humans are social creatures, so enjoy going out more, indulging more in delicious foods and maybe a little more alcohol than you usually might. It is all about balance, so without it becoming a task, try to make balanced choices throughout the week. If you know you are out on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, try to eat healthily and get some exercise done before then. Choose meals you know you won’t eat at the weekend, so if you are going to be eating pizza and curry at the weekend, try to get some nutritious omegas from salmon or eggs with plenty of leafy green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli. This way, indulging in less healthy

gain plenty of healthy antioxidants. Eat plenty of good protein such as chicken, turkey, salmon and tuna (or chickpeas, beans and cheese if you prefer vegetables) and healthy fats such as eggs and nuts. If this is your diet the majority of the time, there is nothing wrong with having some foods that aren’t packed full of good nutrition.

meals for the other three days you are out is absolutely fine. When you get to Sunday, try to blow the cobwebs away with a walk outside in the fresh air. This way, you are banking more exercise and benefiting from the outdoors, which significantly helps your mental wellbeing. People often have an ‘all or nothing’ approach to diet and fitness, which can often lead to a feeling of failure and a yo-yo approach which can greatly harm your diet in the long run. Having a few unhealthier evenings out doesn’t have to be the end of the world. It just means that if you can pack your plate full of brightly coloured foods such as red peppers and courgettes, you will

Rest is extremely important when it comes to physical and mental health, and it can also be a huge influence on what decisions you make. If you are very tired, it is too easy to reach for sugary snacks that will only make you feel more tired in the long run. So when you can, try to rest and get good quality sleep. Keep well hydrated by drinking plenty of water so your body can function efficiently. These are simple but effective ways to feel energised and well.

Try not to set yourself up to fail by setting goals you won’t achieve, such as going to the gym four times a week. Instead, set a goal of doing a home workout and walking to work twice a week, and you are far more likely to achieve those goals and feel positive about living a healthy, balanced life. Laughing, dancing and having fun are also great for the abdominal muscles and for your mental wellbeing! 
