The Hidden Garden Co was set up by Jules Walker who wanted to create a nursery where everyone is welcome and can enjoy a green space.

“Gardening was entwined within my childhood, as my mother was an avid gardener. She sadly passed away with dementia, and to cope with the grief I had a vision of creating The Hidden Garden Co in her honour. I set to work, along with my partner, Tony Moon and with the helping hand of Mark Berresford, an experienced horticulturist, to create a nursery where everyone is welcome and can enjoy a green space. To enjoy the beauty of nature evolving and walk amongst the plants and trees, listening to the birds sing and encouraging people to bring their dogs and children to connect with nature.”

“We cater for every individual need, whether it be a small pot plant to sit by a back door to supplying large mature plants and trees to create that instant impact in a large garden or a small space.”

“Our latest project is the introduction of a new exciting range of garden buildings to complement any outdoor area. With the focus of working from home or wishing to enhance an outdoor living space, the outdoors has become a part of our everyday norm and gardening has become a saving grace for so many. We run a free gardening advisory service which has really taken off, particularly with people who have no experience or understanding of gardening and need the security and help of one of our horticulturists to advise them, providing appropriate ideas and visions for them to take away. It is a concept that is proving popular.”

“The pandemic has created a new generation of garden enthusiasts. During lockdown we saw a significant shift in the world of gardening with a newly found passion for all things green emerging particularly as the enforced time at home brought a need to connect with nature and proved stimulation, both physically and mentally for all. Many islanders have invested in their gardens and this outdoor interest has increased in popularity in 2021. The desire to grow and cultivate vegetables and plants appears to have heightened people’s interests in gardening, bringing great satisfaction and a renewed energy to their lives. It is great to witness and be part of the journey.”

“A whole new breed of gardeners has evolved, with what the Royal Horticultural Society is calling a new “golden age” where horticulture is being cultivated by an influx of new garden enthusiasts and long may it continue!” 

O'Dea is an explosive collection of poems that documents the life of a daughter trying to support her artist father, Tommy O'Dea, who is overseas struggling with dementia and drug addiction during a pandemic. Interspersed with the frantic cycle of overdoses, escapes from care, disappearances and urgent international phone calls are moments of reflection on her father’s artwork and her seaside surroundings.

Traci O’Dea is an American poet living in Jersey. O'Dea is the author of Restricted Movement (Scotland Street Press, 2021) for which she received a Seed Funding Grant from Arthouse Jersey. www.traciodea.com
